Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) are toxic to crops, resulting in economic losses during agricultural production. Owing to its strong adsorption capacity, biochar can effectively remove MPs from water. It is presumed that biochar can alleviate the phytotoxicity of PVC-MPs. To verify this hypothesis, the effects of different concentrations of corncob biochar (CCBC) on the phytotoxicity of PVC-MPs were investigated using hydroponic experiments. The results showed that PVC-MPs attached to lettuce roots substantially inhibited the growth and quality of lettuce. The tested CCBC adsorbed the PVC-MPs. At appropriate concentrations, CCBC alleviated the inhibitory effect of PVC-MPs on lettuce yield; however, it decreased some quality indicators. The single PVC-MPs induced oxidative damage to lettuce, as demonstrated by the increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Addition of CCBC considerably decreased the contents of H2O2 and MDA in the lettuce shoots but increased the H2O2 content in the roots. These findings indicate that CCBC may alleviate the adverse effects caused by PVC-MPs to the lettuce shoots but aggravate the toxic effects on the lettuce roots. This study provides a basis for understanding the removal of the phytotoxicity of MPs.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil is a global issue that seriously threatens agricultural production and human health. Biochar has attracted significant attention as an efficient and environmentally friendly material for remediating heavy metal pollution in soil. In this study, biochar (BC) was prepared from tobacco straw and then modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) using a mixed co-impregnation method to create polyethyleneimine-modified biochar (PBC). The structure and surface properties of BC and PBC were analyzed, and their effects on the physiological characteristics of Chinese cabbage, as well as the accumulation of cadmium and copper in Cd and Cu-contaminated soil, were studied. The results indicated an increase in the pore volume and pore size of the modified BC, with successful impregnation of PEI on the BC surface. The introduction of functional groups, such as amine groups, enhanced the adsorption of biochar. After 70 days of cultivating young plants, the growth status of Chinese cabbage and the soil's physical and chemical properties were determined. Compared with the control ( CK), when the addition amount of PBC was 3%, the data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The indicators with significant changes were as follows: the content of available Cd and Cu in soil decreased by 54.68% and 43.76%, respectively. The plant height and root length of Chinese cabbage increased by 3.1 cm and 3.5 cm, respectively. The fresh and dry weights of leaves increased by 138.07% and 98.3%, respectively. The fresh and dry weights of the roots increased by 107.3% and 140.5%, respectively. The chlorophyll content of the leaves increased by 57.68%. The absorption and accumulation of Cd in roots and leaves decreased by 48.80% and 55.88%, respectively. The absorption and enrichment of Cu in roots and leaves decreased by 33.04% and 43.41%, respectively. The enrichment coefficients of Cd and Cu in Chinese cabbage leaves decreased by 47.45% and 40.92%, respectively, and in roots by 48.80% and 33.04%. In summary, PBC serves as an effective soil heavy metal stabilizer, significantly enhancing the physiological and biochemical indexes of crops in contaminated soil and reducing heavy metal accumulation in crops. This provides a scientific basis and technical support for researching and developing efficient soil heavy metal stabilization materials.

Abstract:Environmental pollution is caused by the unsustainable use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers and pesticides. Biochar (BC) is a carbon-based material applied to remove excess nutrients and pesticides from the environment. In pot experimental research, N fertilizer and pesticides alone and different biochar types were applied in the soil to evaluate cauliflower growth, soil quality, and leaching of agricultural contaminants. BC addition had increased nutrient availability based on feedstock origin. The surface structure results by SEM showed that the BC pore size was equal to 8.94 and 7.24 μm for mixed biochar and wood biochar, respectively. Nitrate concentrations in percolation water were 43.78 and 76.82 mg/L in mixed biochar and wood biochar, respectively. In soil treated with fertilizer and pesticides, NO3− was equal to 106.76 mg/L. Biochar’s binding with pesticides depends on its nature and structure. Adding wood biochar significantly reduced the leaching of fungicide compared to unamended soil, with a contraction of 327.86 and 3576 ng/L. Mixed biochar was more efficient for herbicide mitigation. FTIR was used to identify the functional groups on biochar-amended soil that play a role in the adsorption of agricultural compounds. Research shows that the BC application greatly affects the pesticide fate and N compounds of agricultural origin in soil.
Biochar mitigates the postponed bioavailability and toxicity of phthalic acid esters in the soil

Abstract:Observed nowadays wide pollution of the environment with microplastic and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) (such as dimethyl phthalate, DMP; diethyl phthalate, DEP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP; benzyl butyl phthalate, BBP; di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP and di-n-octyl phthalate, DNOP) is a result of their increased production and usage. Weak bonding with polymer matrix enables their easier mobilization in the environment and increased bioavailability. The aim of the presented studies was the estimation of the fate of six priority PAEs in the soil-vegetable system and the application of biochar to immobilize PAEs in the soil preventing their bioavailability to lettuce. Both the acute (one full lettuce development period) and prolongated effect (lettuce cultivated after 10 weeks from the first PAEs contamination) were estimated to examine the long-time exposure under crop rotation. The addition of 1 % of corn-derived biochar immobilized PAEs in the soil efficiently (up to 4 times increased concentration) with the following order: DBP < DEP < DMP < DEHP < DNOP < BBP. Bioavailable PAEs were determined in lettuce roots (DMP, BBP, DEHP), and lettuce leaves (DEP, DBP, DNOP) but the presence of biochar lowered their content. PAEs, although not available for lettuce, were available for other organisms, confirming that the bioavailability or lack of nutrients is of great importance in PAEs-polluted soil. In long-time experiments, without biochar amendment, all PAEs were 3-12 times more bioavailable and were mainly accumulated in lettuce roots. The biochar addition significantly reduces (1.5-11 times) PAEs bioavailability over time. However, the PAEs content in roots remained significantly higher in samples with crop rotation compared to samples where only lettuce was grown. The results confirmed that biochar addition to the soil reduces their bioavailability and mobility inside the plant, limiting their transport from roots to leaves and reducing the exposure risk but confirming that lettuce leaves may be a safe food when cultivated in PAEs-polluted soil.

Abstract:Biochar as an environmentally friendly soil amendment, has attracted widespread attention and in combination with other amendments is considered to be more conducive to crop growth, soil fertility, and crop safety production. However, a comprehensive understanding of the differences among different biochars, biochar with inorganic amendment, and biochar with organic amendment with respect to soil health, plant growth, and Cd bioavailability or phytoavailability is necessary. Therefore, a sixty-day pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of five biochars derived from rice husk (RH), pig manure (PM), sewage sludge (SS), corn straw (CS), and wood chip (WC) and their respective combination with lime or compost on cadmium (Cd) immobilization and adsorption as well as physicochemical features and enzyme activities in contaminated soil. The results revealed that the sole application of PM, SS, and CS biochars had a positive impact on lettuce growth and photosynthetic pigments. In addition, mixing PM or SS biochar with compost further promoted lettuce growth due to higher soil fertility and enzyme activities. However, as compared to unamended soil, CS biochar-compost combination, RH, PM, SS, and CS biochar-lime combination highly reduced lettuce plant height and fresh weight. Furthermore, the application of amendments with biochar-lime mixtures greatly reduced Cd bioavailability. X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared spectra revealed that Cd immobilization mainly involved complexation and co-precipitation on mineral surfaces as well as hydroxyl or carboxyl functional groups in amendments. In comparison to a single application and biochar-lime combination, the biochar-compost combinations i.e RH, PM, SS, and WC were more effective in lowering Cd translocation and bioaccumulation in lettuce.
Biodegradable microplastics reduce the effectiveness of biofertilizers by altering rhizospheric microecological functions

Abstract:The effectiveness of biofertilizers as a cost-effective crop yield enhancer can be compromised by residual soil pollutants. However, the impact of accumulated polyadipate/butylene terephthalate microplastics (PBAT-MPs) from biodegradable mulch films on biofertilizer application and the consequent growth of crop plants remains unclear. Here, the effects of different levels of PBAT-MPs in soil treated with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens biofertilizer were assessed in a four-week potted experiment. PBAT-MPs significantly decreased the growth-promoting effect of the biofertilizer on Brassica chinensis L., resulting in a notable reduction in both above- and belowground biomass (up to 52.91% and 57.53%, respectively), as well as nitrate and crude fiber contents (up to 12.18% and 13.64%, respectively). In the rhizosphere microenvironment, PBAT-MPs increased soil organic carbon by 2.63-fold and organic matter by 2.68-fold, while enhancing sucrase (from 67.55% to 108.89%) and cellulase (from 31.26% to 49.10%) activities. PBAT-MPs also altered the rhizospheric bacterial community composition/diversity, resulting in more complex microbial networks. With regard to microbial function, PBAT-MPs impacted carbon metabolic function by inhibiting the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate fixation pathway and influencing chitin and lignin degradation processes. Overall, the rhizospheric microbial profiles (composition, function, and network interactions) were the main contributors to plant growth inhibition. This study provides a practical case and theoretical basis for rational use of biodegradable mulch films and indicates that the residue of biodegradable films needs pay attention.

Abstract:Pesticide contamination and soil degradation present significant challenges in agricultural ecosystems, driving extensive exploration of biochar (BC) and nano-biochar (NBC) as potential solutions. This study examines their effects on soil properties, microbial communities, and the fate of two key pesticides: the hydrophilic methomyl (MET) and the hydrophobic lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT), at different concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5% w w-1) in agricultural soil. Through a carefully designed seven-week black bean pot experiment, the results indicated that the addition of BC/NBC significantly influenced soil dynamics. Soil pH and moisture content (MC) notably increased, accompanied by a general rise in soil organic carbon (SOC) content. However, in BC5/NBC5 treatments, SOC declined after the 2nd or 3rd week. Microbial populations, including total plate count (TPC), phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB), showed dynamic responses to BC/NBC applications. BC1/NBC1 and BC3/NBC3 applications led to a significant increase in microbial populations, whereas BC5/NBC5 treatments experienced a decline after the initial surge. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of both MET and LCT increased with higher BC/NBC concentrations, with NBC demonstrating greater efficacy than BC. Degradation kinetics, modeled by a first-order equation, revealed that MET degraded faster than LCT. These findings underscore the profound impact of BC/NBC on pesticide dynamics and microbial communities, highlighting their potential to transform sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract:Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is the by-products of mushroom production, which is mainly composed of disintegrated lignocellulosic biomass, mushroom mycelia and some minerals. The huge output and the lack of effective utilization methods make SMS becoming a serious environmental problem. In order to improve the application of SMS and SMS derived biochar (SBC), composted SMS (CSMS), SBC, combined plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR, Bacillus subtilis BUABN-01 and Arthrobacter pascens BUAYN-122) and SBC immobilized PGPR (BCP) were applied in the lettuce seedling. Seven substrate treatments were used, including (1) CK, commercial control; (2) T1, CSMS based blank control; (3) T2, T1 with combined PGPR (9:1, v/v); (4) T3, T1 with SBC (19:1, v/v); (5) T4, T1 with SBC (9:1, v/v); (6) T5, T1 with BCP (19:1, v/v); (7) T6, T1 with BCP (9:1, v/v). The physicochemical properties of substrate, agronomic and physicochemical properties of lettuce and rhizospheric bacterial and fungal communities were investigated. The addition of SBC and BCP significantly ( p < 0.05) improved the total nitrogen and available potassium content. The 5% (v/v) BCP addiction treatment (T5) represented the highest fresh weight of aboveground and underground, leave number, chlorophyll content and leaf anthocyanin content, and the lowest root malondialdehyde content. Moreover, high throughput sequencing revealed that the biochar immobilization enhanced the adaptability of PGPR. The addition of PGPR, SBC and BCP significantly enriched the unique bacterial biomarkers. The co-occurrence network analysis revealed that 5% BCP greatly increased the network complexity of rhizospheric microorganisms and improved the correlations of the two PGPR with other microorganisms. Furthermore, microbial functional prediction indicated that BCP enhanced the nutrient transport of rhizospheric microorganisms. This study showed the BCP can increase the agronomic properties of lettuce and improve the rhizospheric microbial community.

Abstract:Poor soil has become a serious global problem, threatening soil health and food security. Although returning sludge to soil in the form of coal char is an ideal method for soil improvement, the improvement of soil physical and chemical properties by different co-pyrolysis materials is not clear. We selected three co-pyrolysis species and sludge to prepare biochar, and studied their effects on soil improvement. The influences of different sludge-based biochar FeCl3 (BC1), Na2SiO3 (BC2), and Ca(H2PO4)2 (BC3) on soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphorus, organic carbon, and the growth of Brassica chinensis L through a pot experiment with three parallel were investigated. The results showed that all sludge-based biochar were beneficial to the growth of Brassica chinensis L and did not exceed the heavy metal standard in the soil (GB 1618-2018, Chinese Standard). In addition, the above-ground parts of Brassica chinensis L met the requirements of food safety (GB 2762-2017, Chinese Standard). BC3 was the most effective in increasing soil ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphorus, and organic carbon by 29.81%, 229.41%, and 25.12%, respectively. BC3 also increased plant yield and chlorophyll content by 54.5% and 27.9%, respectively. In addition, BC3 inhibited the migration of heavy metals to the above-ground and reduced the overall contamination level of heavy metals from 0.8467 to 0.3277. The human health risk assessment showed that the target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values were less than 1, indicating that the health risks associated with the consumption of Brassica chinensis L (heavy metal intake) were negligible.

Abstract:Over the past few years, there has been a rising interest in employing biochar (BC) and biofertilizers (BF) as a means of restoring soils that have been polluted by heavy metals. The primary objective of this study was to examine how the application of BC and BF affects the ability of cotton plants to withstand Pb toxicity at varying concentrations (0, 500, and 1000 mg/kg soil). The findings revealed that exposure to Pb stress, particularly at the 1000 mg/kg level, led to a decline in the growth and biomass of cotton plants. Pb toxicity triggered oxidative damage, impaired the photosynthetic apparatus, and diminished the levels of photosynthetic pigments. By increasing the expression of Rubisco-S, Rubisco-L, P5CR, and PRP5 genes and regulating proline metabolism, BC and BF increased the levels of proline and photosynthetic pigments and protected the photosynthetic apparatus. The application of BC and BF resulted in an upregulation of genes such as CuZnSOD, FeSOD, and APX1, as well as an increase in the activity of the glyoxalase system and antioxidant enzymes. These changes enhanced the antioxidant capacity of the plants and provided protection to membrane lipids from oxidative stress caused by Pb. The inclusion of BC and BF offered protection to photosynthesis and other essential intracellular processes in leaves by minimizing the transfer of Pb to leaves and promoting the accumulation of thiol compounds. This protective effect helped mitigate the negative impact of the toxic metal Pb on leaf function. By improving plant tolerance, reducing metal transfer, strengthening the antioxidant defense system, and enhancing the level of protective substances, these amendments show promise as valuable tools in tackling heavy metal pollution.

Abstract:Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is a key enzyme in the hydrolysis of TG-rich lipoproteins. To elucidate the physiological roles of LPL in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, we generated transgenic rabbits expressing human LPL. In postheparinized plasma of transgenic rabbits, the human LPL protein levels were about 650 ng/ml, and LPL enzymatic activity was found at levels up to 4-fold greater than that in nontransgenic littermates. Increased LPL activity in transgenic rabbits was associated with as much as an 80% decrease in plasma triglycerides and a 59% decrease in high density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Analysis of the lipoprotein density fractions revealed that increased expression of the LPL transgene resulted in a remarkable reduction in the level of very low density lipoproteins as well as in the level of intermediate density lipoproteins. In addition, LDL cholesterol levels in transgenic rabbits were significantly increased. When transgenic rabbits were fed a cholesterol-rich diet, the development of hypercholesterolemia and aortic atherosclerosis was dramatically suppressed in transgenic rabbits. These results demonstrate that systemically increased LPL activity functions in the metabolism of all classes of lipoproteins, thereby playing a crucial role in plasma triglyceride hydrolysis and lipoprotein conversion, and that overexpression of LPL protects against diet-induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.
Combined Effects of Microplastics and Biochar on the Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Phthalate Esters and Its Potential Microbial Ecological Mechanism

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been attracting wide attention. Biochar (BC) application could improve the soil quality in the contaminated soil. Currently, most studies focused on the effect of MPs or BC on the soil properties and microbial community, while they neglected the combined effects. This study investigated the combined effects of BC or ball-milled BC (BM) and polyethylene plastic fragments (PEPFs) and degradable plastic fragments (DPFs) on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalate esters (PAEs) from the PAH-contaminated soil and the potential microbial ecological mechanisms. The results showed that BC or BM combined with PEPF could accelerate the removal of PAHs and PAEs. PEPF combined with BM had the most significant effect on the removal of PAHs. Our results indicating two potential possible reasons contribute to increasing the removal of organic pollutants: (1) the high sorption rate on the PEPF and BC and (2) the increased PAH-degrader or PAE-degrader abundance for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Soil quality deterioration and heavy metal contamination have greatly limited soil productivity in mining areas. As soil is a complex system with various properties and interactions, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive investigation to understand the amendment's mechanisms at work in the soil in mining areas as well as effective ways to address its deteriorating quality. In this study, a potassium dihydrogen phosphate-modified maize straw-cow dung biochar (PBC) was applied as a soil amendment. Various physicochemical properties of the soil including organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and pore characteristics were analyzed. This study also assessed soil-saturated water content and soil moisture characteristic curve. Lettuce biomass was measured and changes in various speciation of Pb and Cd in the soil, and the accumulation of Pb and Cd in lettuce were examined. Results showed that the addition of PBC increased soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus while reducing soil bulk density, it also increased soil porosity , saturated water content, and capillary water capacity. Soil structure analysis using CT scanning revealed that 3% PBC increased the macrospores volume fraction while 5% PBC made the pores more uniform. Lettuce biomass increased by 53.3%. 5% PBC resulted in a 56.79% and 38.30% reduction in Pb and a 44.56% and 16.60% reduction in Cd in roots and shoots of lettuce respectively. PBC facilitated the transformation of Pb and Cd from unstable fractions to stable fractions through complexation and precipitation. Overall, the addition of PBC effectively improved soil nutrients, porosity, and water-holding capacity, promoted plant growth , immobilized Pb and Cd, as well as reduced the bioavailability in contaminated-soil from mining areas. This study provides an effective strategy and a new perspective for the remediation of Pb–Cd-contaminated soils.

Physiological responses of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) to microplastic pollution

Abstract:Concerns about the pollution of farmlands by microplastics and the associated toxicology have increased in recent times; however, studies on this topic are scarce. In this study, two kinds of PVC microplastics with different particle sizes (PVC-a with particle sizes from 100 nm to 18 μm, and PVC-b with particle sizes from 18 to 150 μm) and different content levels (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) were used to analyze the effects of PVC microplastics on the physiological characteristics of the lettuce root system and leaves. The results showed that PVC-a and PVC-b had no significant effect on the lettuce root activity. However, 0.5%a and 1%a significantly increased the total length, surface area, volume, and diameter of roots. In terms of leaves, PVC-a and PVC-b had no significant effect on the malondialdehyde content, but 1%a significantly increased the superoxide dismutase activity. Carotenoid synthesis was promoted by PVC-a but inhibited by PVC-b. Furthermore, 1%a could reduce the ability of light energy absorption, dissipation, capture, and electron transfer. The gray correlation analysis indicated that PVC-a correlated to a considerable degree with the indices related to photosynthesis, while PVC-b was significantly correlated with the indices related to root morphology. This study provides insights into the ecotoxicological effect of microplastics on farmland crops and associated ecological risk assessment.

Abstract:Soil acidification has become a major environmental and economic concern worldwide. Char materials (e.g biochar, hydrochar) have attracted considerable attention as soil amendments to restore degraded soil. However, the comparative study of biochar and hydrochar on plant growth in acidified soil is limited. In this study, a microcosmic experiment was used to compare the effect of biochar and hydrochar from cow manure (CBC, CHC) and reed straw (RBC, RHC) on the growth of lettuce in the acidified soil. CBC and RHC significantly increased and decreased the biomass of lettuce by 18.7% and 32.5% in the acidified soil, respectively. The increase of the lettuce growth by CBC primarily attributed to the enhancement of soil properties (SOM and pH) and soil nutrient content (Olsen-P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe and Mn). Moreover, CBC enhanced the microbial activity and complexity and increased the abundance of beneficial genera like Gemmatimonas, Ramlibacter and Haliangium, which improved soil health and might indirectly benefited the lettuce growth. Our findings highlighted the priority of char materials feedstock and preparation technology for remediating the acidified soil.

Abstract:The effect of the Ca2+ channel blocker nicardipine on the circle of Willis and the different sized pial arteries was assessed in 20-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) using quantitative image analysis techniques. Normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were also used as a normotensive reference group. In SHR a significant increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP) is noticeable in comparison with WKY rats. The media-to-lumen ratio was increased in the circle of Willis arteries, large sized (diameter > than 150 microns), medium sized (diameter between 150 and 50 microns) and small sized (diameter < than 50 microns), pial artery branches. An increase in the thickness of the tunica media and a luminal narrowing was also seen in medium and small sized pial arteries of SHR in comparison with WKY rats. Treatment with an oral dose of 10 mg/Kg of nicardipine 3 h before the sacrifice significantly reduced SBP in SHR. The drug was without effect on circle of Willis and on large sized pial arteries. Moreover, treatment with nicardipine reduced the thickness of the tunica media, the media-to-lumen ratio and increased the luminal area in medium and small sized pial artery branches. These findings show that treatment of SHR with nicardipine significantly reduces SBP and causes a moderate vasodilatation of arteries regulating cerebrovascular resistance. This property may be useful in avoiding generalized or exaggerated cerebrovascular dilatation which could be accompanied by impaired brain perfusion in hypertension.
Rhizospheric pore-water content predicts the biochar-attenuated accumulation, translocation, and toxicity of cadmium to lettuce

Abstract:Metal bioavailability controls its behaviors in soil-plant system, especially involved in biochar amendment. This study compared a rhizospheric pore-water extraction against a BCR sequential extraction method to understand cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in two typical Chinese soils. Soils were spiked with five levels of Cd (CdCl2) and remediated with 3% corn-straw derived biochar. After 60 days of lettuce growth, Cd accumulation and enzyme activities in tissues were analyzed. Results showed that biochar increased soil properties (pH, CEC and SOM) compared to un-amended soils, but decreased contents of bioavailable Cd in soil pore-water (Cdpore-water) and BCR extracted Cd (CdFi+Fii). Contents of Cdpore-water were lower in yellow-brown soils than that in red soils. Pearson analysis showed that bioavailable Cd is negatively correlated with soil pH and CEC (p < 0.05). Cd accumulation in lettuce roots and leaves both were decreased by biochar addition, and the established linear equations proved that soil Cdpore-water is the best predictor for Cd accumulation in lettuce roots (r2 = 0.964) and in leaves (r2 = 0.953), followed by CdFi+Fii. Transfer factor (TF) values of Cd from roots to leaves were lower than 1, and slightly better correlated with soil Cdpore-water (r = -0.674, p < 0.01) than CdFi+Fii (r = -0.615, p < 0.01). Aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analyses indicated that soil properties together with Cdpore-water contribute more than 50% to root enzyme activities. Collectively, soil Cdpore-water is a promising predictor of Cd bioavailability, accumulation and toxicity in soil-plant system with biochar addition.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been confirmed as a novel type of environmental pollutant. They have long-term existence in the soil environment and threaten the soil ecological environment system. Biochar soil amendment is capable of enhancing the water and nutrient holding capacity and improving the soil structure and quality of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the effect of biochar amendment on bacterial community in MPs-contaminated soil-plant system remain unclear, in particular the prediction of bacterial function of these systems. In this study, the effects of biochar amendment on the bacterial community structure of MPs-contaminated soil were investigated through different treatments at three pepper growth stages, and the bacterial function of MPs-contaminated soil was predicted. As indicated by the results of this study, biochar amendment led to the increased species evenness and richness of bacterial community in MPs-contaminated soil, the enhanced relative abundance of MPs-contaminated tolerant bacteria (e.g., Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes), as well as the improved relative abundance of Massilia , Lysobacter , and Terrimonas . Furthermore, soil total phosphorus (TP), soil organic carbon (SOC), NH 4+ -N, NO 3− -N, and pH served as the main factors for the composition of soil bacterial community, as revealed by the result of Pearson correlation analysis and redundancy analysis. Bacterial genera Massilia , Lysobacter , and Terrimonas significantly affected the growth indicator of pepper. PICRUSt functional prediction suggested that the bacterial community of MPs-contaminated soil primarily comprised four level-1 functional layers and 16 level-2 functional layers, and the active soil bacterial community was identified in Metabolism, Genetic information processing, as well as Cellular processes. Biochar amendment enhanced the abundance of genes correlated with Amino acid metabolism and Carbohydrate metabolism of bacteria in MPs-contaminated soil, thus facilitating the nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism cycle of MPs-contaminated soil plants. Our results confirmed that biochar amendment increase the beneficial bacteria in MPs-contaminated soil, more significantly facilitate the nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism cycle within MPs-contaminated soil plants, while effectively expediting the growth of plants in MPs-contaminated soil. This study provides more insights into the correlation of plant and bacterial communities in response to biochar amendment in MPs-contaminated soil system.

Abstract:The development of a low-cost, highly catalytic, and soil fertility-improving biochar material is of significant importance for the sustained remediation of organic pollutants in the environment. In this study, multifunctional N, Fe dual active site biochar (NF-BC) was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method using cotton straw, urea, and FeCl 3 as raw materials. Compared to the original biochar, NF-BC exhibits high graphitic-N content and abundant Fe 2+ , enabling efficient activation of Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of Paclobutrazol (PBZ) in water and soil. EPR and quenching experiments confirm that the free radical pathway (•OH) and the non-free radical pathway ( 1 O 2 ) act together in PBZ degradation. The DFT results illustrate the benzene and pyridine rings of PBZ are electron-rich regions, which can be attacked by reactive oxygen species. Then three possible degradation pathways are provided by combining them with the LC/MS test. After remediation by the NF-BC/PMS system, the soil fertility index and plant growth are significantly improved. Compared to CK, the pH value and SOM content of the soil remained unchanged after remediation with the NF-BC/PMS system, while the content of available K and hydrolyzed N increased by 27.18 and 2.27 times, respectively. The pot experiments showed that the NF-BC/PMS system not only alleviates the stress of PBZ on mung bean seedlings, but also promotes an increase in leaf area, accumulation of dry biomass, and root growth. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of low-cost and multifunctional biochar for the efficient removal of pesticides in soil and water environments.
