Abstract:Abstract Mineral phosphorus (P) fertilizers support high crop yields and contribute to feeding the teeming global population. However, complex edaphic processes cause P to be immobilized in soil, hampering its timely and sufficient availability for uptake by plants. The resultant low use efficiency of current water-soluble P fertilizers creates significant environmental and human health problems. Current practices to increase P use efficiency have been inadequate to curtail these problems. We advocate for the understanding of plant physiological processes, such as physiological P requirement, storage of excess P as phytate, and plant uptake mechanisms, to identify novel ways of designing and delivering P fertilizers to plants for improved uptake. We note the importance and implications of the contrasting role of micronutrients such as zinc and iron in stimulating P availability under low soil P content, while inhibiting P uptake under high P fertilization; this could provide an avenue for managing P for plant use under different P fertilization regimes. We argue that the improvement of the nutritional value of crops, especially cereals, through reduced phytic acid and increased zinc and iron contents should be among the most important drivers toward the development of innovative fertilizer products and fertilization technologies. In this paper, we present various pathways in support of this argument. Retuning P fertilizer products and application strategies will contribute to fighting hunger and micronutrient deficiencies in humans. Moreover, direct soil P losses will be reduced as a result of improved P absorption by plants.

Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems

Abstract:This review discusses and summarizes the latest reports regarding the agronomic utilization and potential environmental effects of different types of phosphate (P) fertilizers that vary in solubility. The agronomic effectiveness of P fertilizer can be influenced by the following factors: (1) water and citrate solubility; (2) chemical composition of solid water-soluble P (WSP) fertilizers; (3) fluid and solid forms of WSP fertilizers; and (4) chemical reactions of P fertilizers in soils. Non-conventional P fertilizers are compared with WSP fertilizers in terms of P use efficiency in crop production. Non-conventional P fertilizers include directly applied phosphate rock (PR), partially acidulated PR (PAPR), and compacted mixtures of PR and WSP. The potential impacts of the use of P fertilizers from both conventional (fully acidulated) and non-conventional sources are discussed in terms of (1) contamination of soils and plants with toxic heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), and (2) the contribution of P runoff to eutrophication. Best practices of integrated nutrient management should be implemented when applying P fertilizers to different cropping systems. The ideal management system will use appropriate sources, application rates, timing, and placement in consideration of soil properties. The goal of P fertilizer use should be to optimize crop production without causing environmental problems.

Abstract:The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to agricultural soils increased by 3.2 % annually from 2002 to 2010. We quantified in detail the P inputs and outputs of cropland and pasture and the P fluxes through human and livestock consumers of agricultural products on global, regional, and national scales from 2002 to 2010. Globally, half of the total P inputs into agricultural systems accumulated in agricultural soils during this period, with the rest lost to bodies of water through complex flows. Global P accumulation in agricultural soil increased from 2002 to 2010 despite decreases in 2008 and 2009, and the P accumulation occurred primarily in cropland. Despite the global increase in soil P, 32 % of the world's cropland and 43 % of the pasture had soil P deficits. Increasing soil P deficits were found for African cropland vs. increasing P accumulation in eastern Asia. European and North American pasture had a soil P deficit because the continuous removal of biomass P by grazing exceeded P inputs. International trade played a significant role in P redistribution among countries through the flows of P in fertilizer and food among countries. Based on country-scale budgets and trends we propose policy options to potentially mitigate regional P imbalances in agricultural soils, particularly by optimizing the use of phosphate fertilizer and the recycling of waste P. The trend of the increasing consumption of livestock products will require more P inputs to the agricultural system, implying a low P-use efficiency and aggravating P-stock scarcity in the future. Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in food production. P consumption is increasing over the years due to increasing population and increasing demand for agricultural yields. Managing the agricultural P through the understanding of bioavailability, transport, and runoff will maximize the soil productivity and minimize the environmental effects. Efficient management in agriculture, governance, and lack of integrated international governance need to be addressed to overcome the P scarcity issue. Results and Discussions: This article is focusing one such efficient management of P resource addressing the major portion of phosphorus which is unnoticed in agricultural residues, manures, and other sources. Increasing cost of phosphate fertilizer, a scarcity of high-quality phosphate rock (PR), and increasing surface water pollution are driving a need to accelerate the recovery and reuse of phosphorus (P) from various waste sectors. Options to recover P occur all along the open P cycle from mining to households to oceans. However, P recovery as a regional and global strategy toward P sustainability and future food, bio energy, and water security are in its infancy because of a number of technological, socioeconomic, and institutional constraints. Resolving these constraints requires concerted collaboration between relevant stakeholders and an integrated approach combining successful business models with socioeconomic and institutional changes.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) scarcity poses a significant challenge to sustainable agriculture, impacting plant growth and crop productivity. While arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have been extensively studied for their role in enhancing phosphorus acquisition, this review explores the potential of diverse microflora as alternative solutions. The diverse microflora groups, including rhizobacteria, actinomycetes, and cyanobacteria, contribute to phosphorus availability through various mechanisms. These microfloras produce organic acids, enzymes, and chelators that enhance phosphorus solubility and mineralization, facilitating nutrient cycling. Moreover, they promote root growth, nutrient uptake efficiency, and plant growth through the production of growth-promoting substances. Unravelling the molecular interactions between microflora and plants has provided insights into signalling pathways and genetic mechanisms governing the symbiotic association. Harnessing the power of diverse microflora offers potential benefits, including reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers, improved nutrient use efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Future research directions involve exploring unexplored microflora groups, manipulating microbial communities, and integrating microflora-based strategies with precision agriculture technologies. This review highlights the significance of diverse microflora as alternative solutions to address phosphorus scarcity and advance sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) participates in various assimilatory and metabolic processes in plants. Agricultural systems are facing P deficiency in many areas worldwide, while global P demand is increasing. Pioneering efforts have made us better understand the more complete use of residual P in soils and the link connecting plant P resorption to soil P deficiency, which will help to address the challenging issue of P deficiency. We summarized the state of soil “residual P” and the mechanisms of utilizing this P pool, the possible effects of planting and tillage patterns, various fertilization management practices and phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms on the release of soil residual P and the link connecting leaf P resorption to soil P deficiency and the regulatory mechanisms of leaf P resorption. The utilization of soil residual P represents a great challenge and a good chance to manage P well in agricultural systems. In production practices, the combination of “optimal fertilization and agronomic measures” can be adopted to utilize residual P in soils. Some agricultural practices, such as reduced or no tillage, crop rotation, stubble retention and utilization of biofertilizers-phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms should greatly improve the conversion of various P forms in the soil due to changes in the balance of individual nutrients in the soil or due to improvements in the phosphatase profile and activity in the soil. Leaf P resorption makes the plant less dependent on soil P availability, which can promote the use efficiency of plant P and enhance the adaptability to P-deficient environments. This idea provides new options for helping to ameliorate the global P dilemma.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is one of the six key elements in plant nutrition and effectively plays a vital role in all major metabolic activities. It is an essential nutrient for plants linked to human food production. Although abundantly present in both organic and inorganic forms in soil, more than 40% of cultivated soils are commonly deficient in P concentration. Then, the P inadequacy is a challenge to a sustainable farming system to improve the food production for an increasing population. It is expected that the whole world population will rise to 9 billion by 2050 and, therefore, it is necessary at the same time for agricultural strategies broadly to expand food production up to 80% to 90% by handling the global dilemma which has affected the environment by climatic changes. Furthermore, the phosphate rock annually produced about 5 million metric tons of phosphate fertilizers per year. About 9.5 Mt of phosphorus enters human food through crops and animals such as milk, egg, meat, and fish and is then utilized, and 3.5 Mt P is physically consumed by the human population. Various new techniques and current agricultural practices are said to be improving P-deficient environments, which might help meet the food requirements of an increasing population. However, 4.4% and 3.4% of the dry biomass of wheat and chickpea, respectively, were increased under intercropping practices, which was higher than that in the monocropping system. A wide range of studies showed that green manure crops, especially legumes, improve the soil-available P content of the soil. It is noted that inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi could decrease the recommended phosphate fertilizer rate nearly 80%. Agricultural management techniques to improve soil legacy P use by crops include maintaining soil pH by liming, crop rotation, intercropping, planting cover crops, and the consumption of modern fertilizers, in addition to the use of more efficient crop varieties and inoculation with P-solubilizing microorganisms. Therefore, exploring the residual phosphorus in the soil is imperative to reduce the demand for industrial fertilizers while promoting long-term sustainability on a global scale.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P), an essential nutrient for crop and animal production, can accelerate freshwater eutrophication, now one of the most ubiquitous forms of water quality impairment in the developed world. Repeated outbreaks of harmful algal blooms (e.g., Cyanobacteria and Pfiesteria) have increased society's awareness of eutrophication, and the need for solutions. Agriculture is regarded as an important source of P in the environment. Specifically, the concentration of specialized farming systems has led to a transfer of P from areas of grain production to animal production. This has created regional surpluses in P inputs (mineral fertilizer and feed) over outputs (crop and animal produce), built up soil P in excess of crop needs, and increased the loss of P from land to water. Recent research has shown that this loss of P in both surface runoff and subsurface flow originates primarily from small areas within watersheds during a few storms. These areas occur where high soil P, or P application in mineral fertilizer or manure, coincide with high runoff or erosion potential. We argue that the overall goal of efforts to reduce P loss to water should involve balancing P inputs and outputs at farm and watershed levels by optimizing animal feed rations and land application of P as mineral fertilizer and manure. Also, conservation practices should be targeted to relatively small but critical watershed areas for P export.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient required for the proper functioning of plants. Because P plays a vital role in every aspect of plant growth and development, deficiencies can reduce plant growth and development. Though soil possesses total P in the form of organic and inorganic compounds, most of them remain inactive and thus unavailable to plants. Since many farmers cannot afford to use P fertilizers to reduce P deficits, alternative techniques to provide P are needed. Phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSMs) are a group of beneficial microorganisms capable of hydrolyzing organic and inorganic insoluble phosphorus compounds to soluble P form that can easily be assimilated by plants. PSM provides an ecofriendly and economically sound approach to overcome the P scarcity and its subsequent uptake by plants. Though PSMs have been a subject of research for decades, manipulation of PSMs for making use of increasing fixed P in the soil and improving crop production at the field level has not yet been adequately commercialized. The purpose of this review is to widen the understanding of the role of PSMs in crop production as biofertilizers.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient for various plant processes, is generally a limiting soil component for crop growth and yields. Organic and inorganic types of P are copious in soils, but their phyto-availability is limited as it is present largely in insoluble forms. Although phosphate fertilizers are applied in P-deficit soils, their undue use negatively impacts soil quality and the environment. Moreover, many P fertilizers are lost because of adsorption and fixation mechanisms, further reducing fertilizer efficiencies. The application of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) is an environmentally friendly, low-budget, and biologically efficient method for sustainable agriculture without causing environmental hazards. These beneficial microorganisms are widely distributed in the rhizosphere and can hydrolyze inorganic and organic insoluble P substances to soluble P forms which are directly assimilated by plants. The present review summarizes and discusses our existing understanding related to various forms and sources of P in soils, the importance and P utilization by plants and microbes,, the diversification of PSMs along with mixed consortia of diverse PSMs including endophytic PSMs, the mechanism of P solubilization, and lastly constraints being faced in terms of production and adoption of PSMs on large scale have also been discussed.

Abstract:Phosphorus stands as a vital nutrient crucial for plant growth, demanding efficient utilization for sustainable agricultural practices. Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) have surfaced as promising allies in enhancing phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) within cropping systems. This review encapsulates recent insights into the essential role of PSMs in bolstering PUE and their influence on cropping systems. We discuss the mechanisms through which PSMs facilitate the solubilization of insoluble phosphates in the soil, rendering them accessible for plant uptake. PSMs exhibit the capacity to produce organic acids, enzymes, and siderophores, which aid in releasing phosphorus from soil minerals, thus amplifying their availability to plants. Additionally, we explore the symbiotic relationships between PSMs and plants, elucidating how PSMs foster plant growth and development by generating plant growth-promoting hormones, countering pathogens through antibiosis, and enhancing stress tolerance. Harnessing the potential of PSMs emerges as a promising avenue to combat phosphorus deficiency and foster sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is essential for growing crops, but the supply of high-quality phosphate rock reserves used for fertilizer production is finite while losses of P from the food/waste system cause considerable environmental damage. A variety of emerging approaches in biotechnology are reviewed that hold promise for improving the sustainability of P use in the food/water systems. These include improved sensors, cell culture approaches to meat production, bio-based P adsorption and transformation strategies, advancements in understanding of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms, and new approaches involving biomineralization and anaerobic treatment. By advancing these technologies to scale, progress can be made in developing a circular phosphorus economy that improves food security while protecting drinking water and aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:The main discoveries and advances in the development of industrial processes for the most commercially used phosphate fertilizers in the world (single superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate, and diammonium phosphate) occurred from 1830 to 1970, followed by improvements and investments to expand worldwide production capacity. A main opportunity now is aggregating new technologies to conventional phosphate fertilizers so they may become even more efficient in supplying P to plants, which involves research related to the technologies for reduction in soil P losses. Thus, some innovations and technologies have begun to be developed and marketed and continue in continual refinement and adoption in agriculture worldwide to reduce conversion of soluble P applied through conventional phosphate fertilizers into unavailable forms in the soil. This is the case of enhanced efficiency fertilizers, which includes groups of phosphate fertilizers with fixation inhibitors and the chemically modified, controlled-release, blends, multifunctional, and synergistic phosphate fertilizers. The technologies presented in detail in this paper were developed to improve the agronomic efficiency of phosphate fertilization in comparison with conventional fertilizers, with costs varying according to raw materials, production technologies, and distance from the consumer market. This synthesis expands knowledge regarding technologies in use, stimulating the development and application of technologies that increase nutrient efficiency, based on results obtained through suitable methods and equipment along with laboratory, greenhouse, and field results. Increased fertilization efficiency should always be linked with greater economic profitability and the lowest environmental impact, following the principles of sustainability and circular economy. The great challenge for innovation is transforming the knowledge generated regarding fertilizers present in patents and scientific publications into technologies appropriate for the fertilizer market and for adoption in agriculture.

Use of PSMs as biofertilizer is an eco-friendly approach to overcome the P deficiency of soil. Thus, exploration of efficient variety of PSMs as biofertilizer is one of the thrust areas for enhancement of crop production by managing P deficiency. Impact of Mineral P Fertilization on Trace Elements in Cropland Soils

Abstract:Soil phosphorus is indispensable for Crop production, and mineral fertilizers processed from rock phosphates, such as Superphosphate, represent an important P source. In the past, P fertilizers from iron and steel slags (basic slag) have also contributed to increased biomass productivity. Both types of fertilizer contain Heavy metals as potentially adverse environmental contaminants: they can accumulate in the soil, be taken up by food crops or transferred into aquatic ecosystems. This article reviews the past and current use of P fertilizers and presents the results of two Austrian long-term P Field experiments (Fuchsenbigl and Rottenhaus) on Superphosphate and basic slag fertilization. The focus is on its impact on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd), uranium (U), chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) in the soil and their uptake into plants (grain of winter Wheat, Triticum aestivum L.). The mining of rock phosphate first began in the mid- to late nineteenth century, before which mainly Organic fertilizer were used as P sources. From the 1950s to the 1980s, phosphate rocks were extensively applied to agricultural soils in Central European countries. This marked the onset of more intensive research on the adverse environmental effects of P fertilization. In Austria, 48 years of very high phosphate fertilization (175 kg P ha−1 year−1) significantly increased the aqua regia soluble trace elements in the soil. Superphosphate application led to a +25%/+22% increase of Cd and a +34%/+21% increase of U in 0–25 cm/25–50 cm soil depth at the Fuchsenbigl site. At the Rottenhaus site, which is rich in silt and clay, only U was significantly enhanced (+37%/+25% in 0–25 cm/25–50 cm) after long-term, very high Superphosphate fertilization. In Fuchsenbigl, long-term basic slag fertilization also significantly enriched Cr and V at lower application amounts (44 kg P ha−1 year−1) in 0–25 cm soil depth, in 25–50 cm only with very high P fertilization (175 kg P ha−1 year−1). In Rottenhaus, high fertilization significantly increased the Cr concentrations in 0–25 cm (+34%) and the V concentrations in both 0–25 cm (+80%) and 25–50 cm (+50%). After long-term, very high Superphosphate fertilization (175 kg P ha−1 year−1), winter Wheat grains showed the highest but non-critical Cd concentrations at both experimental sites. Finite natural P resources and the adverse environmental effects of P overuse increasingly require sustainable agricultural P management options to optimize P use efficiency. Careful consideration of the amount and type of P fertilizers and well-planned crop rotations are known as promising strategies. Another potential way forward is P recovery from phosphate salts, municipal waste treatment plants, manure and digestates. These approaches are necessary to meet the challenges of global change and a circular P economy.

Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential mineral for the growth of plants which is supplied in the form of fertilizers. Phosphorus remains an inseparable part of developing agrarian economics. Phosphorus enters waterways through three different sources: domestic, agricultural, and industrial sources. Rainfall is the main cause for washing away a large amount of phosphates from farm soils into nearby waterways. The surplus of phosphorus in the water sources cause eutrophication and degradation of the habitat with an adverse effect on aquatic life and plants. Phosphate elimination is necessary to control eutrophication in water sources. Among the different methods reported for the removal and recovery of phosphorus: ion exchange, precipitation, crystallization, and others, adsorption standout as a sustainable solution. The current review offers a comparative assessment of the literature on novel materials and techniques for the removal of phosphorus. Herein, different adsorbents, their behaviors, mechanisms, and capacity of materials are discussed in detail. The adsorbents are categorized under different heads: iron-based, silica-alumina-based, calcium-based, biochar-based wherein the metal and metal oxides are employed in phosphorus removal. The ideal attribute of adsorbent will be the utilization of spent adsorbents as a phosphate plant food and a soil conditioner in agriculture. The review provides the perspective on the current research with potential challenges and directives for possible research in the field.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient essential for all living organisms. Regrettably, it is a finite resource since phosphate rock (PR) is the main material used for production of P fertilizers. Globally, the demand for quality PR is escalating due to many factors including increasing human population. Inevitably, the demand for PR will exceed its supply capacity. This condition will be very difficult to manage as living systems have no alternative for P. Moreover, P use efficiency is low; only 15–20% of applied P is used by crops and animals. Globally, the remaining P is shunted into various waste streams. These waste streams include large quantities of effluents rich in P from both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems and manure from livestock production. The P present in these waste streams poses a threat to the environment by nutrient enrichment resulting in serious ecological issues such as eutrophication of waterways. However, P in these waste streams, if economically recovered, can contribute to a sustainable management of P resources. This review covers the following aspects: global importance of P as an essential nutrient; efficient and sustainable utilization of P; waste stream production, their suitability for P recovery, and limitations; current and emerging technologies for recovery of P; and the use of recovered P material. Finally, future research needs are identified associated with P recovery from waste streams and reuse in agriculture.

Soil Microorganisms Can Reduce P Loss from Cropping Systems

Abstract:Declining supplies of quality phosphate ore and rising costs for P fertilizer, tripled in last 10 years, are changing the economics of food production and consumption. Simultaneously, P applied in crop production continues to be released as a non-point source pollutant that causes widespread degradation of water resources. Strong motivation thus exists to become more efficient in the use of P for crop production. Applications of P fertilizer to crops are commonly guided by single-point-in-time measurements of inorganic P residing in forms that are relatively easy to chemically extract from the soil. While these easily extractable inorganic P forms often represent P that is immediately available for plant uptake, these same P forms also represent P that is most subject to fixation in the soil (decreasing plant availability) or loss from the system via leaching, surface flow, and erosion. Point-in-time measurements ignore the dynamic nature of soil P, since soil biological activities continually transform P into forms with varying mobility and plant-availability and therefore introduce a kinetic aspect to P retention and plant availability. There is an urgent need for an alternative model for managing soil P fertility that accounts for the activities of soil microorganisms in controlling pools and fluxes of soil P and moderating plant P uptake. In this review, we synthesize the emerging literature from different scientific disciplines to provide a foundational understanding of the principles by which native soil microorganisms can improve the efficiency of P use in crop production systems. Following an introduction, we summarize the dual roles of P as a critical resource for food production and an environmental pollutant responsible for economic damages in billions of dollars. In Sect. 2.3 we outline the use of P in fertilization of cropping systems and its possible fates following application. We point out that commonly used indices of fertilization use efficiency fail to account for loss from the system and there is an alternative method that does account for losses. Sect 2.4 summarizes standard schemes for analytical soil P fractionation, their relationship with conventional soil fertility tests, and the limitations of using conventional soil tests to direct P applications. Section 2.5 describes the mechanisms by which soil microorganisms modify P mobility and bioavailability and surveys the emerging literature that demonstrates that microbial biomass turnover and biologically-catalyzed reactions can create an annual flux of 10–40 kg ha−1 plant available P. Section 2.6 documents the role of an obligate plant symbiont, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, in providing P to plant hosts and increasing retention of P in the system. Section 2.7 discusses the relationships between plant and microbial diversity and their influence on soil nutrient dynamics. We conclude with a synthesis of agricultural practices documented to promote soil biomass, diversity, and activities that can improve P retention in crop production systems.

Abstract:This Mini Review gives an overview of and respective references for the current situation regarding global phosphorus reserves and the legal situation for P recovery using Germany as the model. Apart from the well-known pilot up to industrial/full scale recovery techniques, emerging chemical and bio-based P recovery techniques are named without claiming to be all-encompassing. Special attention is paid to the biological systems for P recovery that reveal ways for use of renewable resources as raw materials. A few chemically based recovery techniques like AirPrex®, (Ostara)PEARL™, AshDec®, and RecoPhos® have already been used to recover P at a rate and quality which allows for its sale as a fertilizer. Many chemically based processes are at the stage of investigation on a pilot or laboratory scale, e.g. P-RoC, LeachPhos, and Mephrec®. All of the biologically based technologies like P-Bac are still at an early stage of research and show promising results. Of all recovered materials struvite, calcium phosphate and biological bound phosphorous seem to have the best plant availability. Although there is no ultimate "one fits all" technology, potential P-recovery plant operators can choose from a wide range of techniques which will best fit local raw material availability, economic and ecological situation.
