Abstract:Developing efficient pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) degradation technologies is of scientifical and practical importance to restrain their discharge into natural water environment. This study fabricated and applied a composite material of amorphous MnO2 nanoparticles in-situ anchored titanate nanotubes (AMnTi) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient degradation and mineralization of carbamazepine (CBZ). The degradation pathway and toxicity evolution of CBZ during elimination were deeply evaluated through produced intermediates identification and theoretical calculations. AMnTi with a composition of (0.3MnO2)•(Na1.22H0.78Ti3O7) offered high activation efficiency of PMS, which exhibited 21- and 3-times degradation rate of CBZ compared with the pristine TNTs and MnO2, respectively. The high catalytic activity can be attributed to its unique structure, leading to a lattice shrinkage and small pores to confine the PMS molecule onto the interface. Therefore, efficient charge transfer and catalytic activation through MnOTi linkage occurred, and a MnTi cycle mediating catalytic PMS activation was found. Both hydroxyl and sulfate radicals played key roles in CBZ degradation. Theoretical calculations, i.e., density functional theory (DFT) and computational toxicity calculations, combined with intermediates identification revealed that CBZ degradation pathway was hydroxyl addition and NC cleavage. CBZ degradation in this system was also a toxicity-attenuation process.

Abstract:Design of metal–organic framework (MOF) derived metal oxides is an effective approach for environmental remediation. The current study describes the fabrication of MIL-53-derived perforated CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 using a facile, one-step, post-thermal solid-state approach by varying Cu/Fe ratios. Herein, the release of CO2 and H2O during the thermal treatment facilitates the incorporation of Cu2+ onto the Fe2O3 structure, forming a perforated hollow CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 composite via an in-situ ion-exchange mechanism. The optimised catalyst CF-0.5 displays a high degradation efficiency for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by heterogeneous activation of peroxymonsulfate (PMS), ascribing to the better textural, morphological, and elemental properties of the novel catalyst. Important reaction parameters such as pH, catalyst loading, PMS dosage, pollutant kind and concentration, and reaction temperature are further optimised to develop a cost-effective catalytic system. The magnetically recoverable catalyst outlines a high stability rate, and only a 9 % efficiency loss is observed even after the fourth cycle. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are identified by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and their roles are determined by performing quenching experiments. In the end, a detailed study of the mineralisation ability and reaction intermediates is performed and possible pathways for the degradation mechanism are proposed. This study not only introduces a facile approach for the fabrication of MOF-driven nanomaterials but provides insights into the removal of emerging contaminants such as SMX.

Abstract:Cobalt–nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen and cobalt species enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Radical scavenging assays and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed that radical and nonradical pathways contributed to CBZ degradation, with the nonradical mechanism being predominant. This research presents the development of a novel PMS catalyst, synthesized through an efficient and stable method, which provides a cost-effective solution for the remediation of organic contaminants in water.

Abstract:Three MOF-derived nanoparticles were synthesized by manganese doping and calcination of ZIF-67 precursor. The surface physicochemical properties of these materials were compared using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and BET analyses. Among them, cobalt-manganese oxide nanoflowers (CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs) exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS), achieving 100 % removal within 30 minutes with a rate constant (k obs ) of 0.2960 min −1 . The catalytic mechanism was elucidated by quenching experiments, EPR, electrochemical analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the non-radical oxidation process was initiated mainly by direct electron transfer and 1 O 2 (∼80 %), with a small contribution from the radical SO 4 ·- (∼20 %). The nano-confined structure on the surface of CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs makes it easy to combine with PMS to form CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs/PMS* complexes, which directly capture electrons from CIP to complete the degradation process. The double redox cycle of cobalt-manganese ions and oxygen vacancies on CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs could accelerate the electron transfer process. CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs maintained high removal efficiency (>99 %) over a wide pH range (3−11), with minimal interference from most environmental anions, demonstrating strong stability and interference resistance. This study provides insights into using metal-based materials for oxidative degradation of organic pollutants via non-radical pathways.

Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive soft start-up strategy for sensorless control of three-phase BLDC motors in applications to consumer electronics and high efficiency cooling fans. The proposed start-up control scheme combines a closed-loop I/Hz control with adaptive ramping current profile in accordance to different load torque-speed characteristic. The proposed start-up scheme can reduce the start-up current while at the same time provides a robust and smooth start-up for different applications. A synchronous current sampling control scheme based on the dc-link current is developed for the regulation of motor phase current. A start-up current limit profile is calculated based on assumed load torque-speed characteristics. The controller will switch to sensorless control mode once a verified sensorless commutation signal is detected. Simulation and experimental results have been given to show the robustness of the proposed sensorless start-up control scheme.
Core-shell magnetic Fe3O4@Zn/Co-ZIFs to activate peroxymonosulfate for highly efficient degradation of carbamazepine

Abstract:A core-shell metal-organic framework encapsulated Fe3O4 magnetic particles (Fe3O4@Zn/Co-ZIFs) was designed and synthesized successfully to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. It exhibits superior catalytic performance since the unique interior structure and synergistic effect between ZIFs shell and Fe3O4 core, achieving 100% removal of CBZ (5 mg/L) within 30 min. The outer wrapping structure of ZIF-8 can stabilize the ZIF-67 and Fe3O4 under intricate reaction conditions to restrain the leaching of Co ions (as low as 0.067 mg/L). Further investigation found that both SO4 – and OH contribute to the degradation of CBZ at initial stage, and SO4 – gradually plays a pivotal role with the reaction time prolonging. The acceleration of electron transfer between Fe3O4 and cobalt active sites of Zn/Co-ZIFs could induce the redox cycling of Co2+ and Co3+. The possible degradation pathway was proposed by analyzing intermediates. This work extends the development of MOFs materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:This study developed a novel advanced oxidation process, coupling activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by electrochemistry and catalyst based on an advanced electrocatalyst. Herein, nitrogen-rich porous carbon decorated with FeCo alloy () was fabricated to modify carbon felt (/CF) to remove carbamazepine (CBZ) via electro-enhanced activation of PMS (/CF-PMS). C–C, O-C=O and M=O contents in are positively correlated with CBZ degradation (r 2 =0.937 and 0.942). Benefit from the obvious synergistic effect ( S =3.49) of electro-activation and catalytic-activation caused by electrowetting, CBZ removal ( k =0.0811 min -1 ) was significantly improved with extremely low electric energy consumption (EEC, 0.0506 kWh log -1 m -3 ). Electric field facilitates the regeneration of key catalytic components Fe 2+ and Co 2+ . • OH (derived from the co-activation) and electron-transfer process (derived from catalytic-activation) were the underlying catalysis mechanisms. This work provided new vision to promote the practical utilization of Fenton-like reaction with high-efficiency and low-cost.

Abstract:Using nitrate saturated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101-NH2(Fe) as precursors, N, O co-doped carbon/Fe composites (NOC/Fe-MIL) were synthesized by carbonization for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ). N and O species were doped into the carbon matrix by adsorbed nitrate, increasing the degradation rate of SDZ by 2.80 times compared to the original materials (NC/Fe-MIL). N, O co-doping not only increased the charge transfer rate on the materials surface, but also provided more pyridine N, CO groups and defects as main active sites for enhancing the adsorption to PMS indicated by DFT calculations, thus promoting the generation of O2− and 1O2 to degrade SDZ. More importantly, the NOC/Fe-MIL/PMS system still exhibited stable degradation performance in a wide pH range and in the presence of background anions, which can be used in a variety of complex water matrices and regenerated by heating, enabling it to be applied to practical wastewater treatment. This work will provide a general approach for preparing heteroatom modified materials and new insights for exploring critical roles of N and O species in PMS activation.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have drawn tremendous attention as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. However, it is still challenging to construct MOF-derived materials with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites. Herein, the bimetallic Cobalt-Zinc-zeolite imidazolate framework and melamine co-derived double layer nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix supported highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) (denoted as Co-NC-C) with the exposure of more Co NPs sites was developed by one-step pyrolysis method. The transmission electron microscopy results demonstrate that double layer carbon matrix as a dispersant can effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Co NPs, and Co-NC-C possessed more exposure of Co active sites compared with Co-NC without melamine. Co-NC-C efficiently activated PMS to remove over 96.67% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at a widespread range of pH within 120 min due to its the highly-exposed Co active sites and high graphitization degree. Additionally, the degradation mechanism dominated by the singlet oxygen was demonstrated. Finally, four products and two probable degradation pathways of SMX were confirmed. Half of the products were less toxic than SMX based on the ecological structure activity relationships analysis results. The study provides valuable insights for the development of MOF-derived catalysts with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites.

Abstract:In order to address the problems of metal leaching and low electron transfer efficiency, the iron (Fe) nitrogen (N) co-doped MOFs derived carbon catalysts presented a promising strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water purification . In this work, using the MOF-5 as a template and iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and dicyandiamide (DCD) as a source, Fe, N co-doped carbons were prepared through milling and two-step pyrolysis . The catalytic performance and mechanism of the materials on tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation in the PMS activation system (0.1Fe/N-CPMS) was systematically investigated. The results showed that the stable framework structure of MOFs-derived carbon conduced to encapsulate the Fe nanoparticles within the carbon skeleton, and then the xFe/N-C catalyst with hierarchical pore structure and good electrical conductivity was obtained, which significantly improved the TC catalytic performance. Notably, the 0.1Fe/N-C exhibited the greatest degradation performance achieving a degradation rate of 0.6315 min -1 , which was approximately five times higher than that of N-C. Moreover, the degradation performance of the 0.1Fe/N-C kept the stability in various interference conditions, and still remained over 80% after three cycles test. Combine with the characterization and DFT calculation, the mechanism of the TC degradation in 0.1Fe/N-CPMS system was revealed by a non-radical process dominated by electron transfer, and the degradation efficiency was greatly improved by the synergistic effect of Fe/N on the as-prepared material. The received findings provide an electron transfer tuning strategy of Fe/N co-doped carbon nanomaterials synthesis for promoting the non-radical degradation pathways in the application of organic pollutants removal.

Abstract:The reasonable control of the structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising strategy for improving their peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation activity. In this study, ZIF-67 @ZIF-8 was used as a template to prepare bimetallic core–shell Co-Fe@NC via Fe doping and high-temperature carbonization. Co-Fe@NC maintained the core–shell structure of the original MOF, in which cobalt was uniformly distributed in the nitrogen-doped graphite carbon skeleton and the surface of the graphite carbon skeleton was covered with iron. With the synergistic effect of the nitrogen-doped graphite carbon skeleton, iron, and cobalt, 100% of tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) was removed in 60 min with k obs = 0.062 min −1 in /PMS system. The addition of iron increased the graphitization degree with I D /I G value increased from 0.98 (Co@NC) to 1.034 () and electron transfer rate of the carbon skeleton. Besides, the Co leaching was effectively attenuated from 1.86 mg/L(Co@NC) to 0.78 mg/L () by the core-shell structure and bimetal strategy. Both O 2 · - and 1 O 2 contributed to the degradation of TBBPS according to quenching experiments. TBBPS was deeply degraded into small-molecule compounds through three degradation pathways by the /PMS system. This study provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient bimetal–carbon composites for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Persulfate-based advanced oxidization process was widely investigated in antibiotic removal. MOFs-derived carbon was potential in activating persulfate, while the inevitable sintering and agglomeration effect of catalysts during carbonization resulted in reduced performance. Low-cost biochar was a desired carrier in designing functional composites. Herein, MIL-101Fe-derived carbon/biochar composites (MCB-900) were prepared via carbonizing MIL-101Fe/corn stalk composites. Biochar supporting achieved the dispersion of MIL-101Fe derivative avoiding the agglomeration effect, but also regulated the catalytic microenvironment with more accessible active sites, high porosity, and structural defects. Accordingly, MCB-900 exhibited more efficient norfloxacin (NOF) removal (96.44 %) than biochar (32.90 %) or MIL-101Fe-derived carbon (79.49 %) via exciting PDS by the transformation of Fe species and carbonyl groups. It was found that NOF degradation was ascribed to radical and non-radical oxidization (SO 4 •- , O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 ), involving two possible degradation pathways according to LC-MS. MCB-900/PDS system exhibited high anti-interference capability for pH (2–10) and anions (Cl - , HCO 3 – , H 2 PO 4 - ), and was suitable for actual water matrixes and various organic pollutants removal. Further, with optimization by RSM, low dosages of PDS and MCB-900 could also reach high NOF removal (>95 %). Combining emerging MOFs with traditional biochar, this work provided an effective means and reference to design high-efficiency catalysts for antibiotic removal in water treatment.

Abstract:Background Ibuprofen (IBP) is typically ubiquitous in various environments, which has negatively impacted microorganisms, animals, and human health. Methods A carbon nanofiber-supported bimetallic catalyst (Co/Fe@CNFs) was synthesized by electrospinning and carbonization for sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) in IBP treatment. Co and Fe nanoparticles were wrapped inside the CNFs to avoid agglomeration and achieve uniform distribution. The performances of catalysts were evaluated via IBP degradation efficiencies. Findings Co/Fe@CNFs could efficiently activate both peroxymonosulfate and persulfate, achieving 100% and 89.1% degradation of IBP within 60 min with an activation energy of 37.4 and 65.4 kJ/mol, respectively. In the PMS system, both Co and Fe catalyze PMS to generate reactive oxygen species (SO4 ·−, ·OH, O2 ·− and 1O2), all of which contributed significantly to degradation. However, the main functional species were SO4 ·− and ·OH in the Fe activated PS system. This work would deepen the understanding of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process to further expand its application in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The rational design of the morphology and structure of bimetallic-based heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst derived from metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation via a non-radical pathway is attractive but challenging. Herein, a spinel-type 3D hierarchical porous NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheet array for the activation of PMS is rationally designed by surfactant-assisted interfacial engineering. The experimental results showed that the NiCo 2 O 4 /PMS system demonstrated remarkable oxidative degradation of tetracycline (TC) through 1 O 2 attack and electron transfer process. In literature, it was thought that the PMS activation process in above system is dominated by radical pathway. In this work, we employ surfactant modified-nanostructure engineering to design hierarchical mesoporous nanosheet array structures and combined them with intrinsic bimetallic synergy to enhance catalytic activity, and interestingly the strategy transformed the PMS activation pathway into a nonradical ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer)-dominated process. This is benefit from the favorable morphological and electronic structure of the designed catalysts to facilitate mass transfer and electron transfer processes. The system also possessed a broad spectrum for degrading other typical contaminants, and was effective in tolerating actual water matrix and pH changes, as well as resisting interference from anions and organic matter. Furthermore, the robust stability of the structure and catalytic activity make it promising for practical water treatment. It can be expected that this proposal will provide insights for the delicate structural design and the understanding of its PMS activation mechanism of bimetallic-based Fenton-like catalysts, as well as for the efficient degradation of emerging organic pollutants.

Abstract:The peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes had demonstrated great potential in water remediation , but the shortage of PMS active sites in the catalyst and the low conversion of active sites limited the wide application in practice. As a result, the design and synthesis of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts for the activation of PMS had garnered significant attention. Thus, we enhanced electron transfer efficiency by introducing the metallic 1T phase into 2H phase molybdenum disulfide (THMS) and increased the active sites through the introduction of sulfur defects using the Joule heating strategy, resulting in the formation of defect-rich THMS (DTHMS). In addition, we anchored Fe nanoparticles () that could give rise to coupled photothermal and plasmon resonance effects under simulated sunlight irradiation to promote the activation of PMS and the dissociation of H 2 O, resulting in an augmented production of radicals. In the optimized hybrid, an impressive degradation rate of Carbamazepine (CBZ) approached 99% within 15 min. The temperature of the /PMS/light system was increased to 49 °C with irradiation for 10 min and the corresponding apparent rate reaches 0.35695 min −1 which was 8.9 and 5.7 times that of initial THMS (0.0398 min −1 ) and DTHMS (0.0622 min −1 ), respectively. Our work offered an innovative solution for constructing PMS co-activated systems by coupling solar photothermal conversion, enabling efficient degradation of organic pollutants while reducing costs and energy consumption.

Abstract:Carbon-based catalysts with low toxicity and facile functional modification have received increasing attention in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). However, the poor reusability and catalytic activity inhibit their widespread application. Herein, a hydrothermal-assisted Fe doping strategy is proposed, where Fe-doped metal-organic framework (MOF) is transformed into three-dimensional (3D) interwoven network structure of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and named F(x)ZHC. The catalysts present good catalytic performance when tetracycline (TTCH) is chosen as the target pollutant, which can be attributed to two aspects: (i) More Fe-doped CNTs were generated based on the above strategy, which enhanced the conductivity, accelerated the electron transfer, and enhanced the reaction kinetics (structural optimization); (ii) Fe and N-doped create abundant reaction active sites and increase the generation rate of reactive oxygen species (composition optimization). For comparison, Fe-doped ZIF-8 without hydrothermal denoted as F(0.2)ZNHC was also prepared for testing and the results show that F(0.2)ZNHC exhibit enhanced TTCH degradation rate of 0.13 min(-1), which is 30 % higher than that of F(0.2)ZNHC. F(0.2)ZNHC/PMS system was investigated as a O-1(2) based non-radical degradation pathway by quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The hydrothermal assisted Fe doping strategy is expected to be extended to the application of MOF-derived heteroatom doping.

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:A simultaneous thermal polymerization reaction was performed with graphitic carbon nitride and polyethylene glycol to synthesize a novel metal-free carbon–nitrogen (CN) material, and the prepared material was applied to activate a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal by CN7/PMS reached 93.75 % in 10 min, which was 39.86 times higher than that achieved by PMS systems alone. Material characterization showed that the pyrolysis temperature could be adjusted to modulate the N atom and functional group contents. As determined by experimental validation and DFT calculations, C = O/C-N, graphitic N and defects were the main active sites. This finding indicates that CN7 activated PMS to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) through electrostatic interactions , nucleophilic addition, electron transfer and other pathways. Moreover, 1 O 2 was dominant, with a 91.58 % contribution. In addition, the materials maintained high catalytic stability in different water matrices and multiple cycling experiments. The present study innovatively illustrated the mechanism by which nitrogen-doped carbon materials activated PMS, providing a new insight into the development of highly active metal-free catalysts applied in PMS systems.

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of most frequently detected pharmaceutical contaminants in water ecosystem, which cannot be removed efficiently by traditional techniques. Degradation of CBZ by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated with organo-montmorillonite supported nCoFe(2)O(4) (nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt) was investigated in this study. The degradation efficiency of CBZ (5 mg L-1) was 93% within 60 min in the presence of 0.4 g L-1 nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt and 0.5 mM PMS at pH 6.8 and 25 degrees C, following a pseudo-first order kinetics. High PMS concentration and low initial pH could enhance CBZ degradation. The presence of Cl-, NO3- and HCO3- showed marked enhancement, slight suppression and obvious inhibition of CBZ degradation, respectively. High concentration of humic acid could decrease the CBZ degradation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of nCoFe(2)O(4)/OMt before and after reaction revealed that both Co2+/Co3+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ were involved in PMS activation during the CBZ degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments confirmed that both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- played a predominant role on the CBZ degradation. The degradation products were identified by LC-MS/ MS to understand the possible pathways.

Abstract:In this work, magnetic porous carbon material doped with cobalt and nitrogen () was obtained by pyrolysis of Various characterization techniques were used to investigate the material properties and cobalt was found to exist as Co 0 , Co 2+ , and Co 3+ . The efficiency of catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation was investigated and 91.27 % of TC was degraded within 30 min using 0.2 g/L PMS and 0.04 g/L Furthermore, the effect of different factors on TC removal from the /PMS system was examined and it was found that maintained good catalytic activity and decent anti-interference ability. Additionally, the free radical quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) tests revealed that activates PMS mainly through radical pathways (sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical) and non-radical pathways (singlet oxygen、electron transfer), of which the latter is dominant. An examination of the stability of the material revealed that cobalt leaching (0.308 mg/L) was below the national China Emission standard. Possible TC degradation pathways were also proposed. Biotoxicity of major intermediates and end products was significantly reduced compared to TC. Overall, this study provides a novel approach for the preparation of non-uniform cobalt-based catalysts with high efficiency and low cobalt leaching for the activation of PMS.
