Abstract:We investigated eight heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Fe) in water and bed sediment at 9 study sites along with 2320 km stretch of the Ganga River. Principal component analysis (PCA) and indices such as geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), pollution indices, and sediment quality guidelines were used to assess source apportionment and magnitude of contamination. Concentrations of Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Fe in water have exceeded their respective standards in the middle and lower reaches of the river. Sediment Cr and Ni have reached probable effective concentration (PEC) at Kannauj, imposing likely threats to sediment dwellers. Highest Igeo values were recorded for Cr, Cd, and Pb at Kannauj, Rajghat, and Howrah. We further tested ecological risks (Er) and potential ecological risks (PERI) to assess individual and cumulative effects and found the Kannauj, Rajghat, and Howrah sites under the high-risk category. The modified pollution index (MPI) and the modified degree of contamination (mCd) also revealed the middle and lower river reaches under moderately to the heavily polluted category. Our study provides the first detailed watershed-scale database on heavy metal concentration in water and bed sediment, the magnitude of contamination, and likely ecological risks to aquatic organisms in the Ganga River. Given that the Ganga water is used for drinking and irrigation and the river harbors a diversity of habitats for fisheries, the study merits attention from a human health perspective as well.

Abstract:Heavy metal exposure has increased progressively because of anthropogenic, industrial, and agricultural activities as well as modern industrialisation, all of which have adverse impacts on human health. The environmental concern of hazardous metal contamination of water and air affects hundreds of millions of people in India as well as globally. In the current research, mean concentrations of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) in water samples were 5.48, 1.060, 4.4, 0.728, 3.5, 2.93, 26.56, and 7.68 μg/L, respectively. These levels generally fell within normal ranges, apart from arsenic, which come out to be elevated (> 10 μg/L) at the Shukartaal site. A marked correlation was observed between the physicochemical quality of water and bacterial density. The presence of specific bacterial strains, such as Enterococcus, Pseudomonas spps., Klebsiella , and Proteus spps. , in higher concentrations, suggests a significant level of faecal contamination in water. The Most Probable Number (MPN) of Escherichia coli, total coliforms, fecal streptococci, and fecal coliforms in the regions of Rishikesh, Roorkee, and Shukartaal has exceeded the acceptable levels (GR1, GRR, GS). The spatial distribution of the Hazardous index (H.I.) in the study area revealed a rising trend of environmental leaching from mountainous parts to plain regions. Children were found to be at a higher carcinogenic risk compared to adult males and females. The study recommends implementing prevention and safeguards to address anthropogenic influences.

Abstract:This study focuses on heavy metals distribution and their ecological risk in river water, bed sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) along the Ganga River basin. Overall abundance of the metals followed the sequence, Fe > Al > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cr > Zn > Co in water, Al > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Co > Pb > Cd in bed sediment, while Al > Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd in SPM. Among the abundant metals, Fe and Mn average concentrations exceeded BIS and WHO limits in river water. Similarly, Fe, Cd, and Zn, and most metals exceeded local background concentrations in bed sediment and SPM, respectively. Major ion chemistry in water signified carbonate weathering dominance during the time of sampling. Generally, Mn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Co were derived from natural weathering and erosion, while Zn, Cd, and Pb were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Metal index (MI) for river water showed that 27% of the locations were anthropogenically affected, whereas contamination factor and ecological risk assessment indicated highest contamination and risk from Cr and Cd in suspended sediments around urban centers in the middle basin. Furthermore, the confluence of Chambal and Yamuna increased heavy metal load in Yamuna and Ganga, respectively. The study highlighted the role of the water–sediment interaction indicating SPM is acting as a sink for metals followed by bed sediment.

Abstract:Sustainable river ecosystem is the fundamental backbone of all civilizations of the world. Water contamination through heavy metals and metalloids causes wide environmental and public discontent which makes it a global concern. With this view, 20 km stretch of Gomti River encompassing 5-locations was selected for determination of 16-physicochemical parameters and 11-heavy metals in water and bed-sediment samples during two consecutive years 2019–2020 covering three seasons supplemented by indices and statistics. Bed-sediment characterization was done through scanning electron microscope–energy dispersive X-rays and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared analysis. River is significantly contaminated with Fe, Mg, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Cd, Hg having corresponding mean values 10.1 ± 1.8, 31.7 ± 6.2, 1.4 ± 0.5, 0.42 ± 0.07, 0.09 ± 0.03, 0.03 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.02, 0.41 ± 0.14,0.19 ± 0.01, 0.18 ± 0.01, 0.002 ± 0.001 mg/l in water and 3418.7 ± 529.9, 1839.9 ± 417.6, 194.3 ± 49.1, 112.2 ± 37.5, 42.5 ± 15.7, 36.1 ± 10.6, 23.4 ± 8, 16.7 ± 5.9, 8.4 ± 3.2, 8.2 ± 3.3, 0.002 ± 0.001 μg/g in bed-sediment, respectively. Corresponding order of heavy metals concentration was Mg > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Co > Cd > Ni > Pb > Cu > Hg and Fe > Mg > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Co > Cd > Hg, respectively. Higher values of indices for risk quantification; geo-accumulation index (5.0), contamination factor (1191.8), enrichment factor (46.5) and potential ecological risk index (393.8) were found for Cd in bed-sediment samples. Principal component analysis (λ > 1) scored 3-factors having 65%, 19% and 11% variance for water and 75%, 10% and 7% variance for bed-sediment samples. Strong positive correlations (≥ 0.8) were observed among Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Pb, Cu for water and sediment samples. Study could be beneficial in providing knowledge regarding heavy metal induced ecological risk to aquatic organisms and suggest ways to reduce the burden of potential influx sources.

Abstract:The Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) region of Indian Himalayas is one of the most important pharmaceutical industrial clusters in Asia. This study investigated the distribution, and ecological and human health risks of four most frequently used pharmaceuticals [ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), cetirizine (CTZ) and citalopram oxalate (ECP)] when co-occurring with metal ions in the Sirsa river water of the BBN region. The concentration range of the selected pharmaceuticals was between 'not detected' to 50 μgL-1 with some exception for CIP (50-100 μgL-1) and CTZ (100-150 μgL-1) in locations directly receiving wastewater discharges. A significant correlation was found between the occurrences of NOR and Al (r2 = 0.65; p = 0.01), and CTZ and K (r2 = 0.50; p = 0.01) and Mg (r2 = 0.50; p = 0.01). A high-level ecological risk [risk quotient (RQ) > 1] was observed for algae from all the pharmaceuticals. A medium-level risk (RQ = 0.01-0.1) was observed for Daphnia from CIP, NOR and ECP, and a high-level risk from CTZ. A low-level risk was observed for fishes from CIP and NOR, whereas CTZ and ECP posed a high-level risk to fishes. The overall risk to ecological receptors was in the order: CTZ > CIP > ECP > NOR. Samples from the river locations receiving water from municipal drains or situated near landfill and pharmaceutical factories exhibited RQ > 1 for all pharmaceuticals. The average hazard quotient (HQ) values for the compounds followed the order: CTZ (0.18) > ECP (0.15) > NOR (0.001) > CIP (0.0003) for children (0-6 years); ECP (0.49) > CTZ (0.29) > NOR (0.005) > CIP (0.001) for children (7-17 years), and ECP (0.34) > CTZ (0.21) > NOR (0.007) > CIP (0.001) for adults (>17 years). The calculated risk values did not readily confirm the status of water as safe or unsafe because the values of predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) would depend on various other environmental factors such as quality of the toxicity data, and species sensitivity and distribution, which warrants further research.

Abstract:Analysis of U, Cr, Ni, As, Mo, Cd and Pb was performed in Ganga water in Uttarakhand state of India using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS). Seasonal and spatial variability in the analyzed Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) concentrations were observed in Ganga water in this study. The health risks of PTEs in Ganga water were estimated as pollution indices, hazard quotients and cancer risk. The estimated risk assessment parameters show that Ganga water is not contaminated by the analyzed PTEs in the investigated region. A multivariate statistical analysis of the obtained dataset was performed to identify the pollution sources.

Abstract:A study was made of chromosome changes in rat embryos after exposure to teratogenic doses of x-rays. Two methods were used for chromosome analysis: a direct method permitting analysis of chromosomes soon after removal of the embryos from the uterus, and a method in which the embryonic cells were first grown in tissue culture for several days after removal, before they were processed. The direct method proved superior to the tissue culture method for demonstrating early chromosome changes. A half day after irradiation a high incidence of chromosomal aberrations was found which dropped rapidly and returned to almost normal values after several days.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to assess the status of heavy metal contamination and health risks associated with the use of water from River Gomti by millions of people. The value of the degree of contamination (Cd) was found to be ‘11.93’, signifying ‘high’ risk levels due to heavy metal contamination in River Gomti across an approximate stretch of 61 km including upstream, midstream, and downstream locations of Lucknow city. The potential sources of heavy metal pollution in River Gomti include both sewage and industrial effluents, being transported by drains which overflow into the river. The heavy metals were found to have low mobility owing to the ‘near neutral’ pH of river water. The findings from the human health risk assessment revealed that the hazard index associated with non-carcinogenic risks exceeded the permissible limits at all sampling stations. The highest health risk was found at Bharwara sewage treatment plant discharge point, downstream of Lucknow city signifying the elevated levels of heavy metal in the river water post treatment from Bharwara STP. The results of carcinogenic risk assessment suggested that children were more susceptible to health risks, and immediate remedial measures are required to control the elevated levels of heavy metals at all the sampling stations.

Abstract:Sediment serves as a heavy metal store in the riverine system and provides information about the river's health. To understand the distribution of heavy metal content in the Ganga River basin (GRB), a total of 25-bed sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples were collected from 25 locations in December 2019. Bed sediment samples were analyzed for different physio-chemical parameters, along with heavy metals. Due to insufficient quantity of SPM, the samples were not analyzed for any physio-chemical parameter. The metal concentrations in bed sediments were found to be as follows: Co (6–20 mg/kg), Cr (34–108 mg/kg), Ni (6–46 mg/kg), Cu (14–210 mg/kg), and Zn (30–264 mg/kg) and in SPM, the concentrations were Co (BDL-50 mg/kg), Cr (10–168 mg/kg), Ni (BDL-88 mg/kg), Cu (26–80 mg/kg), and Zn (44–1186 mg/kg). In bed sediment, a strong correlation of 0.86 and 0.93 was found between Ni and Cr, and Cu and Zn respectively and no significant correlation exists between organic carbon and metals except Co. In SPM, a low to moderate correlation was found between all the metals except Zn. The risk indices show adverse effects at Pragayraj, Fulhar, and Banshberia. Two major clusters were formed in Hierarchal Cluster Analysis (HCA) among the sample points in SPM and bed sediment. This study concludes that the Ganga River at Prayagraj, Banshberia, and Fulhar River is predominately polluted with Cu and Zn, possibly posing an ecological risk. These results can help policymakers in implementing measures to control metal pollution in the Ganga River and its tributaries.

Abstract:The rapid industrial development in the Indian capital region has led to significant waste generation, which, despite undergoing treatment prior to disposal, contributes substantially to water body contamination. Given the diverse nature of these wastes and their potential repercussions across the food chain, a study was conducted to evaluate heavy metal contamination levels in the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers of two major cities. Six heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, Cu, Cr, and Zn) were analyzed in fish, water, and sediment samples by utilizing flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Avanta Σ) from March 2019 to February 2020. Results revealed distinct heavy metal distribution patterns, with Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Ganga River and Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Yamuna River for fish samples. Additionally, levels of Hg in Cyprinus carpio and Sperata oar from the Ganga River, and Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cr in Salmophasia bacaila and Mystus cavasius from the Yamuna River exceeded WHO/FAO permissible limits. In water samples, the predominant heavy metal sequences were Pb > Cu > Zn > Cr > Cd > Hg for the Ganga River and Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg for the Yamuna River, with Pb, Cr, Zn, and Cd surpassing WHO standards. Sediment analysis revealed varying heavy metal compositions, with Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Ganga River and Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Yamuna River. While drinking water and fish from the Ganga River were deemed safe for consumption, those from the Yamuna River were not. Given the toxic nature of heavy metals and their detrimental health impacts, regular monitoring and effective management strategies are imperative.

Abstract:River Yamuna is the largest tributary of the Ganges with great economic importance, and provides water for about 57 million people and accounts for more than 70% of Delhi's water supply. Various pollution indices and chemometric methods were used to investigate heavy metal pollution, associated risks, and probable sources in the upper Yamuna river water. A total of 56 river water samples, 28 each in pre and post-monsoon season were collected and analysed for 15 heavy metals. The findings reveal that Al (38.66 ± 21.14 μg/L), As (16.52 ± 15.81 μg/L), and Mn (41.06 ± 89.25 μg/L) in pre-monsoon and Al (45.77 ± 29.46 μg/L), As (10.30 ± 12.15 μg/L), Fe (48.03 ± 81.11 μg/L), and Mn (31.02 ± 70.13 μg/L) in post-monsoon exceeded the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) acceptable limits. The pollution indices (HPI, NPI, HEI, and Cd) indicate that most locations are low to moderately polluted, except for the lower catchment. Health indices, i.e., hazard Index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), suggest that the prolonged consumption of river water may cause potential human health hazards. In contrast, the water is suitable for domestic and other uses as the dermal risk is less prominent. The ecological risk index (ERI) of pre (0.22-58.75) and post-monsoon (0.12-44.21) were in the low-risk category (<110), indicating no ecological risk associated with heavy metals. In pre and post-monsoon, four principal components (PCs) described 73.97% and 76.18% of the total variance respectively, suggesting the mixed impact of numerous geogenic and anthropogenic sources in the region's water chemistry. Cluster analysis demonstrates that the lower catchment samples (National Capital Region, Delhi) significantly vary from each other due to wastewater discharge, industrialisation, and rapid urbanization, while the upper and mid-catchment samples are less distinct. Hence, more than 90% of the Yamuna water is extracted from the upper region; present findings may aid in developing an effective catchment scale management strategy.
Toxic Metal Element Concentration in 31 Food Fishes from River Ganga: Risk Assessment on Human Consumption

Abstract:Consumption of toxic metal contaminated fish is a significant risk to human health. The Ganga river is one of the vital river systems in India, and it nurtures a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. In the present study, screening of potential toxic metal elements (Cd, Cr, Mn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and As) was undertaken in 31 food fishes, especially the small indigenous fishes (SIFs) from the lower stretch of river Ganga by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The concentration of toxic metal elements varied among different fish species. Among the toxic metal elements studied, Cr, Zn, and As were found to be dominant in Eleotris fusca; Cd, Ni, and Pb were highest in Securicula gora; Cu was highest in Cabdio morar; and Mn was highest in Coilia dussumieri. The average pollution load index values (APLI) for all the fishes analyzed were less than one except for Eleotris fusca, which indicated no serious toxic metal element pollution load. The estimated daily intake values (EDI) for the toxic metal elements were found to be within the permissible maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). Among the fishes studied, only a few species showed hazard index (HI) greater than one, indicating non-carcinogenic health risks. Similarly, the target carcinogenic values (TCR) for most of the toxic metal elements were below the permissible limit (10-4) in the fishes that assures minimal cancer risk. This study provides a comprehensive data on the composition of potential toxic metal elements of 31 food fishes from the lower stretch of the river Ganga, the first of its kind, and suggests the necessity of periodic monitoring of these in the aquatic ecosystem.
Contaminants and their ecological risk assessment in beach sediments and water along the Maharashtra coast of India: A comprehensive approach using microplastics, heavy metal(loid)s, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and plasticisers

Abstract:Emerging contaminants and their pervasive presence in freshwater ecosystems have been widely documented, but less is known about their prevalence and the harm they cause in marine ecosystems, particularly in developing countries. This study provides data on the prevalence and risk posed by microplastics, plasticisers, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) along the Maharashtra coast of India. The sediment and coastal water samples were collected from 17 sampling stations, processed, and subjected to FTIR-ATR, ICP-MS, SEM-EDX, LC-MS/MS, and GC-MS for further analysis. Higher MPs abundance, combined with the pollution load index, indicates that the northern zone is a high-impact zone with pollution concerns. Plasticisers in extracted MPs and HMs adsorption on MPs surface from surrounding waters reveal their roles as a source and vector for contaminants, respectively. The mean concentration of metoprolol (53.7-306 ng L-1), tramadol (16.6-198 ng L-1), venlafaxine (24.6-234 ng L-1), and triclosan (211-433 ng L-1) in Maharashtra's coastal waters were several folds higher than in other water systems, raising major health concerns. The hazard quotient (HQ) scores revealed that >70 % of study sites pose a high to medium (1 > HQ > 0.1) ecological risk to fish, crustaceans and algae, indicating serious concern. Fish and crustaceans (35.3 % each) show a higher level of risk than algae (29.5 %). Metoprolol and venlafaxine could represent greater ecological risks than tramadol. Similarly, HQ suggests that bisphenol A has larger ecological risks than bisphenol S along the Maharashtra coast. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first in-depth investigation into emerging pollutants in Indian coastal regions. This information is crucial for better policy formulation and coastal management in India in general, and Maharashtra in particular.

Abstract:Various environmental indicators were used to evaluate the water and sediment quality of the Netravathi-Gurupur estuary, India, for trace metals and pesticide pollution. The descended order of studied metal concentrations (μg/L) in the water was Fe (592.71) > Mn (98.35) > Zn (54.69) > Cu (6.64) > Cd (3.24) > Pb (2.38) > Cr (0.82) and in sediment (mg/kg) was Fe (11,396.53) > Mn (100.61) > Cr (75.41) > Zn (20.04) > Cu (12.77) > Pb (3.46) > Cd (0.02). However, pesticide residues were not detected in this estuarine environment . The various metal indexes categorised the water as uncontaminated, whereas contamination factor, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, degree of contamination and pollution load index indicated low to moderate sediment contamination. Multivariate statistics showed that the dominance of natural sources of trace metals with little anthropogenic impact. Improvement in water/sediment quality during the study period might be due to COVID-19 imposed lockdown.

Ecological impact of pharmaceutical pollutants and options of river health improvements - A risk analysis-based approach

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals are one of the emerging pollutants (EPs) in river waters across the world. Due to their toxic effects on aquatic organisms, they have drawn the global attention of the scientific community concerned with river ecosystems. This paper reviews the existing occurrence data for various pharmaceutical pollutants (PPs) reported in river waters in some part of the world and their ecological impacts. Using algae, macroinvertebrates (MI), and fish as biotic indicator groups in water to reflect river health conditions, an attempt has been made to assess the ecological risk due to the presence of PPs in the water environment. After ascertaining the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) of PPs for selected groups of aquatic organisms, the risk quotient (RQ) is estimated based on their measured environmental concentration (MEC). When MEC > PNEC and RQ > 1 for any of the biotic indicator, ecologically it is 'high risk' condition. The determination of PNEC uses a minimum assessment factor (AF) of 10 due to uncertainty in data over the no observed effect level (NOEL) or lowest observed effect level (LOEL). Accordingly, MEC 10 times higher than PNEC, (RQ = 10) represents a threshold risk concentration (RCT) beyond which adverse effects may start showing observable manifestations. In the present study, a new classification system of 'high risk' conditions for RQ = 1-10 has been proposed, starting from 'moderately high' to 'severely high'. For RQ > 10, the ecological condition of the river is considered 'impaired'. For river health assessment, in the present study, the whole range of physico-chemical characteristics of river water quality has been divided into three groups based on their ease of measurement and frequency of monitoring. Dissolved oxygen related parameters (DORPs), nutrients (NTs), and EPs. PPs represent EPs in this study. A framework for calculating separate indicator group score (IGS) and the overall river health index (RHI) has been developed to predict indicator group condition (IGC) and river health condition (RHC), respectively. Color-coded hexagonal pictorial forms representing IGC and RHC provide a direct visible perception of the existing aquatic environment and a scientific basis for prioritization of corrective measures in terms of treatment technology selection for river health improvements. The analyses indicate that many rivers across the world are under 'high risk' conditions due to PPs having MEC > PNEC and RQ > 1. Up to RCT, (where RQ = 10), the 'high risk' condition varies from 'moderately high' to 'severely high'. In many instances, RQ is found much more higher than 10, indicating that the ecological condition of river may be considered as 'impaired'. Algae is the most frequently affected group of biotic indicators, followed by MI and fish. A review of treatment methods for selection of appropriate technology to reduce the pollution load, especially PPs from the wastewater streams has been summarized. It appears that constructed wetlands (CWs) are at present the most suitable nature-based solutions, particularly for the developing economies of the world, to reduce the concentrations of PPs within limits to minimize the ecological impacts of pharmaceutical compounds on biotic indicators and restore the river health condition. Some suggestive design guidelines for the CWs have also been presented to initiate the process.

Abstract:The objective of the current research was to examine the water quality of the River Ravi and the River Sutlej, with a specific focus on potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Additionally, we sought to monitor the sources of pollution in these rivers by gathering samples from the primary drains that carry industrial and municipal waste into these water bodies. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of PTEs in surface water on groundwater quality by collecting groundwater samples from nearby populated areas. A total of 30 samples were collected from these three sources: rivers (6 samples), drains (9 samples), and groundwater (15 samples). The analysis revealed that the levels of PTEs in the samples from these three resources having a mean value: arsenic (As) 23.5 μg/L, zinc (Zn) 2.35 mg/L, manganese (Mn) 0.51 mg/L, lead (Pb) 6.63 μg/L, and chromium (Cr) 10.9 μg/L, exceeded the recommended values set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, PTEs including (As 84%), (Zn 65%), (Mn 69%), (Pb 53%), (Cr 53%), and (Ni 27%), samples were beyond the recommended values of WHO. The results of the Principal Component Analysis indicated that surface water and groundwater exhibited total variability of 83.87% and 85.97%, respectively. This indicates that the aquifers in the study area have been contaminated due to both natural geogenic factors and anthropogenic sources. These sources include the discharge of industrial effluents, wastewater from municipal sources, mining activities, agricultural practices, weathering of rocks, and interactions between rocks and water. Spatial distribution maps clearly illustrated the widespread mobilization of PTEs throughout the study area. Furthermore, a health risk assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse health effects of PTEs through the ingestion of drinking groundwater by both children and adults. Health risk assessment result show the mean carcinogenic values for As, Cr, Pb and Ni in children are calculated to be (1.88E-04), (2.61E-04), (2.16E-02), and (5.74E-05), respectively. Similarly, the mean carcinogenic values for the above mentioned PTEs in adults were recorded to be (2.39E-05), (3.32E-05), (1.19E-03), and (7.29E-06) respectively. The total hazard index values for As, Zn, Cr, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Ni in children were observed to be (9.07E + 00), (9.95E-07), (4.59E-04), (5.75E-04), (4.72E-05), (2.78E-03), and (5.27E-05) respectively. The analysis revealed that As has an adverse effect on the population of the study area as compared to other PTEs investigated in this study.

Abstract:Water quality is a big concern for the humankind as it is the most important natural resource. Water is polluted by increasing activities of population and the necessity to provide them with goods and services that use water as a vital resource. In this study, surface water samples were collected in the summer and the winter season from Rupsa river, Bangladesh, and pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb concentrations were analyzed to assess the metal toxicity, identify the possible sources and determine health risk from metals in water. During the the summer season, the mean concentrations of Cr, Pb, As, Cu, Ni and Cd were measured as 7.20 ± 0.613, 7.09 ± 0.904, 5.45 ± 0.441, 5.36 ± 0.471, 3.85 ± 0.694 and 0.975 ± 0.106 µg/L, respectively, whereas the concentrations were measured as 8.87 ± 0.756, 7.32 ± 0.93, 6.05 ± 0.490, 6.02 ± 0.529, 5.48 ± 0.986 and 1.38 ± 0.151 µg/L, respectively, during the the winter season. Source identification like correlation analysis, Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were applied to identify the source of toxic metals in water. Total heavy metal toxicity load and heavy metal evaluation index values were found to be higher than permissible value except for Cu. According to the ecological risk index classification, 85% of the total samples were found to pose moderate ecological risks, while the rest 15% were found to pose low ecological risks during both seasons. As showed high non-carcinogenic risk on the basis of single element via oral exposure. The hazard index value for oral exposure by male, female and children was found to be 4.17E + 00, 3.67E + 00 and 8.64E + 00, respectively; indicating that non-carcinogenic effects are obvious to occur. The carcinogenic risks of Ni and As due to regular exposure via oral and dermal contact pathways were higher than the standard value (>1.0E-04) which anticipated possible cancer risks to male, female and children in the study area.

Abstract:Average concentration of few heavy metals exceeded permissible level, posing significant risk to river ecosystem and sediment. Calculated pollution indices also indicated potential ecological risk to water environment and bottom sediment. Human welfare and biodiversity are at risk due to the deterioration of water and sediment quality. Particularly, in last few decades, global water and sediment quality degraded due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization. This study aimed to determine the concentration of nine heavy metals and metalloid (Pb, Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and assess the ecological risks using different pollution indices (e.g., heavy metal pollution index [HPI], Nemerow pollution index [NI], geo‐accumulation index [Igeo], contamination factor [CF], degree of contamination [CD] and pollution load index [PLI], ecological risk index [ERI]) in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, an industrially affected urban river of Bangladesh. For the first time, 20 water and sediment samples were collected across a wider geographical area of the Shitalakshya River during both monsoon and dry seasons and analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer. Average concentrations of heavy metals and metalloid in water were within the Bangladesh standard except for Cr (51.69 ppb) and Mn (228.20 ppb) during monsoon season, portraying potential ecological and human health risks. Besides, average concentration of Mn (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), Ni (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), and Cu (45.34 and 36.09 ppb) in sediment during both seasons were above international standard, implying risk to aquatic sediment biota. The average HPI values indicated moderate to high contamination, whereas the NI values implied polluted water in monsoon season with severe pollution in port area of the river. Similarly, Igeo, CF, CD, and PLI elucidated different levels of contamination in the sediment, particularly during dry season. The ERI values also referred moderate ecological risk in the sediment during dry season. Overall, our findings highlight the alarming level of heavy metal pollution in the Shitalakshya River, necessitating immediate action to protect the aquatic environment, sediment biota, and human health. Practitioner points This study determined the concentration of heavy metals and metalloid in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, Bangladesh. The study revealed that the average concentration of Cr and Mn in water exceeded national standard, whereas Mn, Ni, and Cu in sediment exceeded international limit. Potential ecological risk of heavy metals was also assessed using different pollution indices. Calculated pollution indices indicated different degree of pollution, implying critical ecological condition due to heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment and sediment biota.
