Abstract:Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in soil is a serious environmental issue. Exploring an efficient method for simultaneous immobilization of As and Cd in soils is of great significance. In this study, three types of composite material additives were selected to test their ability to immobilization of As and Cd simultaneously in soil of smelting site through leaching toxicity. Results showed that Fe-based composite material additives (SD) significantly reduced concentrations of As and Cd in solutions from SD1 and SD2 treated soils, signifying that certain Fe-based composite material potentially immobilization heavy metals in soil. While Ca-Mg-Si based composite material additives (C) and Si-Mg-Al based composite material additives (S) have a side effect in As immobilization. The conclusions were that Fe-based composite material may be used as effective in situ amendments to immobilization As and Cd simultaneously in soils.

Abstract:The sludge stabilization products (hereinafter referred to "Composts") added in different addition ratios (30 %, 50 % and 80 %) were applied to remediate the heavy metal(loid)s-contaminated mine tailings. Physicochemical, biochemical and microbial characteristics at day 0 and 180 were systematically investigated. The Composts added in different ratios could all remediate the mine tailings in terms of significantly decreased bulk density, increased organic matters, porosity, germination index, pH and DHA activity, as well as obviously declined aqueous extractable Cu, Pb, As, Cd, Hg, Cr, Zn and Ni (p < 0.05). Taken phytotoxicity alleviation and metal (loid)s mobility inhibition into consideration, the 50 % Composts was the most recommended in this study, with the highest reduction (82.9 %∼91.4 %) in aqueous heavy metal (loid)s concentration comparted to the un-amended. The transformation of Cu, Pb, As, Cd and Hg from exchangeable to more stable forms (especially organically-bound form), due to their enhanced complexation with humus through promoted organic matters aromatization, was considered to drive the alleviation of their leaching pollution in mine tailing soil. While the declined aqueous extractable Cr, Zn and Ni were more likely ascribed to the increased pH value. Further, different from fungal communities not sensitive during remediation, the highest porosity and DHA activity by the 50 % Composts amendment benefited the improved archaeal diversity and enriched bacterial family Bacillaceae (capable of heavy metals biomineralization), further significantly (p < 0.05) contributing to the decrease in Cd mobility. Overall, this study highlights the effective role of the Composts in alleviating heavy metal(loid)s pollution in mine tailings and further clarifies the multiple mechanisms including immobilization, pH adjusting and microbial effects.

Abstract:Exposure to toxic metals from nonferrous metal(loid) smelter soils can pose serious threats to the surrounding ecosystems, crop production, and human health. Bioremediation using microorganisms is a promising strategy for treating metal(loid)-contaminated soils. Here, a native microbial consortium with sulfate-reducing function (SRB1) enriched from smelter soils can tolerate exposures to mixtures of heavy metal(loid)s (e.g., As and Pb) or various organic flotation reagents (e.g., ethylthionocarbamate). The addition of Fe2+ greatly increased As3+ immobilization compared to treatment without Fe2+, with the immobilization efficiencies of 81.0% and 58.9%, respectively. Scanning electronic microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the As3+ immobilizing activity was related to the formation of arsenic sulfides (AsS, As4S4, and As2S3) and sorption/co-precipitation of pyrite (FeS2). High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing of SRB1 suggests that members of Clostridium, Desulfosporosinus, and Desulfovibrio genera play an important role in maintaining and stabilizing As3+ immobilization activity. Metal(loid)s immobilizing activity of SRB1 was not observed at high and toxic total exposure concentrations (220–1181 mg As/kg or 63–222 mg Pb/kg). However, at lower concentrations, SRB1 treatment decreased bioavailable fractions of As (9.0%) and Pb (28.6%) compared to without treatment. Results indicate that enriched native SRB1 consortia exhibited metal(loid) transformation capacities under non-toxic concentrations of metal(loid)s for future bioremediation strategies to decrease mixed metal(loid)s exposure from smelter polluted soils.

Abstract:It is the first time ionic liquid was applied to gas solvent sublation, which established a new method for separation/enrichment of tetracyclines (TCs) antibiotic based on ionic liquid gas solvent sublation. The optimizing experimental conditions were as follows: the mixture of ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazo lium hexafluorophosphats and ethyl acetate ([Hmim] PF6-EA, phi = 1/0.9) can be used as flotation solvent, Fe(III) ion was as trapping agent, pH of test solution was 7.6, the gas flow rate was 40 mL x min(-1), and the flotation time was 50 min. The complexes of TCs- Fe (III) were pre-concentrated in the [Hmim] PF6-EA layer and this was used to determine analytes by fluorescence method directly. The linear regression equation was F = 246.5c+4.32 (c: microg x 10 mL(-1)), and correlation coefficient was 0.999 1. Recoveries between 94.2% and 100.4% were achieved from surface water and sediment samples in ponder by using this method and the relative standard deviation of 5 microg x mL(-1) TCs for 5 parallel determinations was less than 3.2%. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated that no chemical (bonding) interactions occurred between the ionic liquid and the complexes functional groups, and the ionic liquid was only solvent. The experimental result indicated that utilizing ionic liquid to float TCs in environmental sample is feasible.

Abstract:Although neuroimaging studies have strongly implicated basal ganglia involvement in implicit sequence learning, serial reaction time (SRT) studies with Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have yielded mixed results. The present research sought to examine the ability of people with PD to implicitly learn sequences with different sequential structures and to objectively assess explicit knowledge. A version of the SRT task that reduces motor demands was used to compare 19 patients with PD but not dementia and 37 matched controls. PD patients showed less implicit sequence-specific learning for both sequences and reduced response time improvement over sequential trials for the more complex sequence. A closer examination revealed that the deficit involved higher order sequential associations as well as the learning of pairwise information.

Abstract:Heavy metals are pervasive pollutants found in water, soil, and solid wastes. Bio-solidification offers an environmentally friendly approach to immobilize heavy metal ions using two types of bacteria: urease-producing bacteria (UPB) and phosphatase-producing bacteria (PPB). UPB, exemplified by Sporosarcina pasteurii, secretes urease to hydrolyze urea and generate CO32- ions, while PPB, like Bacillus subtilis, produces alkaline phosphatase to hydrolyze organophosphate monoester (ROP) and produce PO43- ions. These ions react with heavy metal ions, effectively reducing their concentration by forming insoluble carbonate or phosphate precipitates. The success of bio-solidification is influenced by various factors, including substrate concentration, temperature, pH, and bacterial density. Optimal operational conditions can significantly enhance the remediation performance of heavy metals. UPB and PPB hold great potential for remediating heavy metal pollution in diverse contaminated areas such as tailings ponds, electroplating sewage, and garbage incineration plants. In conclusion, harnessing the power of these microbial methods can provide effective solutions for remediating heavy metal-induced pollution across a range of environmental conditions.

The impact of microbial community structure changes on the migration and release of typical heavy metal (loid)s during the revegetation process of mercury-thallium mining waste slag

Abstract:The effect of changes in microbial community structure on the migration and release of toxic heavy metal (loid)s is often ignored in ecological restoration. Here, we investigated a multi-metal (mercury and thallium, Tl) mine waste slag. With particular focus on its strong acidity, poor nutrition, and high toxicity pollution characteristics, we added fish manure and carbonate to the slag as environmental-friendly amendments. On this basis, ryegrass, which is suitable for the remediation of metal waste dumps, was then planted for ecological restoration. We finally explored the influence of changes in microbial community structure on the release of Tl and As in the waste slag during vegetation reconstruction. The results show that the combination of fish manure and carbonate temporarily halted the release of Tl, but subsequently promoted the release of Tl and arsenic (As), which was closely related to changes in the microbial community structure in the waste slag after fish manure and carbonate addition. The main reason for these patterns was that in the early stage of the experiment, Bacillaceae inhibited the release of Tl by secreting extracellular polymeric substances; with increasing time, Actinobacteriota became the dominant bacterium, which promoted the migration and release of Tl by mycelial disintegration of minerals. In addition, the exogenously added organic matter acted as an electron transport medium for reducing microorganisms and thus helped to reduce nitrate or As (Ⅴ) in the substrate, which reduced the redox potential of the waste slag and promoted As release. At the same time, the phylum Firmicutes, including specific dissimilatory As-reducing bacteria that are capable of converting As into a more soluble form, further promoted the release of As. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for guiding the ecological restoration of relevant heavy-metal (loid) mine waste dumps.
Coupling effect of DOM and microbe on arsenic speciation and bioavailability in tailings soil after the addition of different biologically stabilized sludges

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbes co-mediate the transformation of heavy metals in soil. However, few previous studies have investigated the effects of interaction between DOM and microbes on the transformation and bioavailability of heavy metals in tailings soil at the molecular level after the addition of organic wastes. This study used co-occurrence network analysis based on Fourier-transform ion cyclone resonance mass spectrometry and high-throughput sequencing to investigate the molecular mechanisms of different bio-stabilized sludge addition on arsenic fraction transformation and bioavailability in tailings soil. It was found that sludge amendments decreased the arsenic bioavailable fraction from 3.62% to 1.74% and 1.68% and promoted humification of DOM in soil. The extra inorganic salt ions introduced with sludge desorb the adsorbed As(V) into soil solution. Specifically, bio-stabilized sludge increased the contents of labile compounds that provided nutrients for microbial metabolism and shaped the microbial community composition into a more copiotrophic state, which increased the abundance of As(V)-reducing bacteria and then converted the As(V) into As(III) and precipitated as As 2 S 3 . This work innovatively explores the transformation mechanisms of As fractions through the perspectives of microbial community and DOM molecular characterization, providing an important basis for the remediation of As-contaminated soil using biosolids.

Abstract:PurposeSoil metal(loid) pollution poses a severe threat to human health. Specifically, oxyanions such as arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) have entered soil through historical mining activities. However, traditional methods of immobilizing oxyanions, like goethite, hematite, and zero-valent iron, may harm soil health in the long run by reducing microbial diversity and soil functionality. Therefore, this study aims to develop amendments for As and Sb immobilization while promoting soil health.Materials and methodsA 6-month field trial was conducted in a mining-affected region in Southwest China. Amendments, including dolomite, iron-modified dolomite, hydrogel, and the joint application of iron-modified dolomite and hydrogel, were applied at a 3wt.% to the surficial 0 ~ 20 cm.Results and discussionJoint application of sodium acrylate hydrogel and iron-modified dolomite lime showed a synergy between metalloid immobilization and soil health improvement. Compared to the unamended soil, leachate As and Sb concentrations decreased by 81% and 49%, respectively. Macroaggregates were formed, cation exchange capacity (CEC) was increased, and microbial diversity was improved, providing evidence of soil health improvement. Furthermore, this application method was superior to amending dolomite lime, iron-modified dolomite, or hydrogel alone, highlighting a synergy between these components. Iron-modified dolomite lime was the primary component responsible for metalloid immobilization and elevation of CEC, while hydrogel accounted for long-term effectiveness by healing soil microcracks and providing a favorable habitat for microbial colonization.ConclusionsThe study results provide a practical solution for sustainable soil remediation. By using a combination of hydrogel and iron-modified dolomite lime, we can immobilize As and Sb while promoting soil health. This approach demonstrates a potential solution for addressing heavy metal(loid) pollution in mining-affected regions while maintaining soil functionality and biodiversity.

Abstract:Immobilization stands as the most widely adopted remediation technology for addressing heavy metal(loid) contamination in soil. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this process does not eliminate pollutants; instead, it confines them, potentially leaving room for future mobilization. Presently, our comprehension of the temporal variations in the efficacy of immobilization, particularly in the context of its applicability to arid farmland, remains severely limited. To address this knowledge gap, our research delves deep into the roles of iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) and organic fertilizer (OF) in the simultaneous immobilization of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in soils. We conducted laboratory incubation and field experiments to investigate these phenomena. When OF was combined with FeOB, a noteworthy transformation of available As and Cd into stable species, such as the residual state and combinations with Fe-Mn/Al oxides, was observed. This transformation coincided with changes in soil properties, including pH, Eh, soluble Fe, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Furthermore, we observed synergistic effects between available As and Cd when treated with bacteria and OF individually. The stabilization efficiency of As and Cd, as determined by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, reached its highest values at 33.39 % and 24.67 %, respectively, after 120 days. Nevertheless, the formation of iron‐calcium complexes was disrupted due to pH fluctuations. Hence, long-term monitoring and model development are essential to enhance our understanding of the remediation process. The application of organic fertilizer and the use of FeOB in calcareous soil hold promise for the restoration of polluted soil and the maintenance of soil health by mitigating the instability of heavy metals(loid).

Abstract:Many non-ferrous metal mining and smelting activities have caused severe metal(loid) contamination in the local soil environment. The metabolic activity of soil microorganisms in four areas affected by different metallurgical activities (production vs. waste disposal) was characterized using a contamination gradient from the contaminated site to the surrounding soils. Results indicated that the soil microcalorimetric and enzyme activities were correlated with the fractionated metal(loid) properties ( p < 0.05). All four areas had high total As, Cd, Pb, Sb, and Zn concentrations, of which mobile As, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn were higher in the contaminated sites than the surrounding sites, reflecting an elevated environmental risk. Three contaminated site areas had lower microbial activities than their surrounding sites suggesting that high metal(loid) concentrations inhibited soil microbial communities. Interestingly, the fourth area (tailing pond) showed an opposite trend (i.e., increased microbial activity in contaminated vs. surrounding areas). The microbial thermodynamic parameters of this contaminated site were higher than its surrounding sites, suggesting that the selected microbial communities can develop a functional resistance to metal(loid)s stress. This study provides a theoretical basis for ecological prevention and control of metal-polluted areas.

Concurrent removal of Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) cations from acid mine drainage by an industrial solid waste - Steel slag: Behaviors and mechanisms

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) contamination poses a severe environmental threat and is a significant risk to human health. There is an urgent need to develop environmentally sustainable and technically viable solutions for water contamination caused by heavy metals. In this study, steel slag (SS) was used as a secondary resource to concurrently remove Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from AMD. Because of the loose and porous structure, abundant functional groups, fast sedimentation velocity, and excellent solid-liquid separation, SS showed exceptional removal performance for heavy metal ions. The adsorption kinetic data of Fe(II),Cu(II), and Zn(II) showed good regression with the pseudo-second-order model. Besides, the adsorption of Fe(II) by SS conformed to the Freundlich model, whereas the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) followed the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption amounts of Cu(II) and Zn(II) being 170.69 mg/g and 155.98 mg/g. Furthermore, competitive adsorption was observed among Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in a multi-component system, with the adsorption priority being Fe(II)>Cu(II)>Zn(II). The removal mechanism of Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in AMD by SS mainly includes electrostatic attraction, chemical precipitation, and surface complexation. Interestingly, the leached concentrations of Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from the spent slag after calcination were all within the detection limit of the Chinese emission standard, demonstrating excellent environmental stability. Theoretically, this renders it a viable candidate for use as an additive in construction materials. Meaningfully, the work offers a practical approach for energy-efficient and eco-friendly heavy metal ions adsorption, and the secondary utilization of SS also contributes to the sustainable development of the steel industry. It is beneficial to implement the development concepts of clean production and efficient utilization of industrial solid waste.
Simultaneous immobilization of multiple heavy metals in polluted soils amended with mechanical activation waste slag

Abstract:Heavy metal soil contamination has become an increasingly serious problem in industrial development. However, industrial byproducts used for remediation are one aspect of green remediation that can contribute to sustainable practices in waste recycling. In this study, electrolytic manganese slags (EMS) were mechanically activated and modified into a passivator (M-EMS), and the heavy metal adsorption performance of M-EMS, heavy metal passivation ability in soil, dissolved organic matter (DOM) change and its effect on the microbial community structure of soil were investigated. The findings revealed that the maximum adsorption capacities of As(V), Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+ were 76.32 mg/g, 301.41 mg/g, 306.83 mg/g and 826.81 mg/g, respectively, indicating that M-EMS demonstrated remarkable removal performance for different heavy metals. The Langmuir model fits Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+ better than the Freundlich model, and monolayer adsorption is the main process. Surface complexation played a major role in the As(V) adsorption's on the surface of metal oxides in M-EMS. The passivation effect was ranked as Pb > Cr > As>Ni > Cd > Cu, with the highest passivation rate of 97.59 % for Pb, followed by Cr (94.76 %), then As (71.99 %), Ni (65.17 %), Cd (61.44 %), and the worst one was Cu (25.17 %). In conclusion, the passivator has the effect of passivation for each heavy metal. The addition of passivating agent can enhance the diversity of microorganisms. Then it can change the dominant flora and induce the passivation of heavy metals through microorganisms. XRD, FTIR, XPS and the microbial community structure of soil indicated that M-EMS can stabilize heavy metals in contaminated soils through four main mechanisms: ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption, complex precipitation and the microbially induced stabilization. The results of this study may provide new insights into the ecological remediation of multiple heavy-metal-contaminated soils and water bodies and research on the strategy of waste reduction and harmlessness by using EMS-based composites in combination with heavy metals in soil.
Analytical study on heavy metal output fluxes and source apportionment of a non-ferrous smelter in southwest China

Abstract:Abandoned Pb/Zn smelters are often accompanied by a large amount of smelting slag, which is a serious environmental problem. Previous studies have demonstrated that slag deposits pose an environmental threat even if the smelters are shut down. Herein, a Pb/Zn smelter and its impacted zone in GeJiu, Yunnan, China were selected as the study area. The risk and source apportionment of heavy metals (HMs) in the soil of the impacted zone were systematically studied. Based on the hydrogeological features, the migration path and output fluxes of the HMs released from smelting slag to the impacted zone were investigated. The HM contents (Cd, As, Zn, Pb, and Cu) in the soil substantially exceeded the screening values of the Chinese soil standard (GB15618-2018). Based on the results of the Pb isotopic and statistical analyses for source apportionment, the contaminated sites and agricultural irrigation water had a large impact on the HMs of soil. The hydrological analysis results showed that runoff, as an HM migration path under rainfall, continued to affect the environment. The water balance calculations using the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance model showed that the rainfall was distributed on site as follows: evaporation (57.35%), runoff (32.63%), and infiltration (10.02%). Finally, the output fluxes were calculated in combination with the leaching experiment. As, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu runoff had the output fluxes of 6.1 × 10 −3 , 4.2 × 10 −3 , 4.1, 1.4 × 10 −2 , and 7.2 × 10 −4 mg/kg/y, and infiltration of 1.9 × 10 −3 , 1.3 × 10 −3 , 1.3, 4.0 × 10 −4 , and 2.2 × 10 −4 mg/kg/y, respectively. Abstract:Abstract Acid mine drainage (AMD) generated by acidic coal gangue has caused coal mine area environmental degradation. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was used to inhibit the oxidation of metal sulfide minerals from acidic coal gangue in Kaili city, Guizhou province. Four experimental groups (named as CK, R-M, R-S, R-SCa) were carried out, the results showed that SRB can effectively raise the pH (2.3 in CK, 7.8 in R-SCa) and inhibit heavy metals leachability. The low initial pH of the system can retard the start-up of sulfate reduction process. The leaching toxicity test indicated that the leachate of heavy metals in coal gangue after bioremediation was significantly reduced. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed the diversity of SRB genera in R-SCa (e.g., Desulfotomaculum and Desulfobulbus was detected) was enhanced in comparation to R-M and R-S. The results demonstrated that SRB significantly inhibit acidic coal gangue contamination and the biostimulation is also a potential solution due to indigenous SRB existence.
Immobilization of heavy metal(loid)s in acid paddy soil by soil replacement-biochar amendment technology under normal wet condition

Abstract:The remediation of agricultural soil contaminated by acid mine drainages (AMD) with extreme acidity and elevated concentrations of metal(loid)s still remains to be solved. In the present study, the combination of soil replacement-biochar (BC) amendment was adopted in 270-day incubation experiments to evaluate the effect on the metal(loids) (As, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn) immobilization and soil properties (pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), redox potential (Eh), and soil water holding capacity (SWC)). The incubation study showed that soil replacement-biochar amendment improved soil health by changing soil properties, which in turn exhibited significant effects on CaCl2-extracted metal(loid)s. The combination of soil replacement and biochar amendment exhibited positive effect on the immobilization of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn, while, the risk of As and Cd mobility induced by biochar in the ageing process should be paid attention. Further laboratory seed germination study suggested that soil replacement-biochar amendment could effectively alleviate the stress of metal(loid)s, with the treatment of S50BC achieving the best remediation results. The results of this study suggested that soil replacement-biochar amendment was a promising remediation technology for agricultural soil contaminated by AMD.

Abstract:The chemical synthesis of alpha-L-Fucp-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-GalpNAc-(1 --> 4)-beta-D-GlcpNAc-(1 --> 3)-alpha-D-GalpO(CH2)5NH2, beta-D-GalpNAc-(1 --> 4)-[alpha-L-Fucp-(1 --> 3)-]beta-D-GlcpNAc-(1 --> 3)-alpha-D-GalpO(CH2)5NH2, and alpha-L-Fucp-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-GalpNAc-(1 --> 4)-[alpha-L-Fucp-(1 --> 3)-]beta-D-GlcpNAc-(1 --> 3)-alpha-D-GalpO(CH2)5NH2 is described. These structures represent fucosylated oligosaccharide fragments of the glycocalyx glycan of the cercarial stage of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, and in protein-conjugated form they are potential diagnostics in the search for antibodies raised against the glycan in the serum of infected humans.
Microbial-mediated metal(loid) immobilization in mulch-covered tailings

Abstract:Mulch coverage of mining tailings can create anaerobic conditions and consequently establish an anoxic environment that promotes the metabolic processes of anaerobic microorganisms. This anoxic environment has the potential to decrease heavy metal mobility and bioavailability. While tailings exposed to sunlight have been extensively studied, research on the effects of microbial-mediated geochemical cycling of heavy metals in mulch-covered tailings is scarce. This study aimed to examine the effects of mulch coverage-induced alterations in the structures of tailing microbial communities on the biogeochemical processes associated with heavy metals. Mulch coverage significantly reduced the pH of the tailings and the tailings exhibited heavy metal bioavailability. Random forest analysis demonstrated that mulch coverage-induced changes in the As/Cd-contaminated fractions and nutrients (total organic carbon and total nitrogen) were the most crucial predictors of microbial diversity and ecological clusters in the tailings. Notably, different from direct metal(loid) immobilization, mulch coverage can facilitate heavy metal immobilization in tailings by promoting microbial-mediated Fe, S, and As reduction. Overall, this study demonstrated that mulch coverage of tailings contributed to a reduction in heavy metal mobilization, which can be attributed to shifts in microbial-mediated Fe, S, and As reduction processes.The study provides valuable insights into the potential of mulch coverage as a remediation strategy and underscores the importance of microbial-mediated processes in managing heavy metal pollution in tailing systems.
Performance of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria combined with biochar on remediation of cadmium and lead co-contaminated soil

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of soil has become a public concern worldwide since it threats food safety and human health. Sustainable and environmental-friendly remediation technology is urgently needed. Therefore, we investigated the properties and heavy metal removal ability of Enterobacter asburiae G3 (G3), Enterobacter tabaci I12 (I12), and explored the feasibility of remediation Cd, Pb co-contaminated soil by the combination of G3/I12 and biochar. Our results indicated that both strains are highly resistant to Cd, Pb and maintain plant growth-promoting properties. The removal efficiency of G3 for Cd and Pb were 76.79–99.43%, respectively, while the removal efficiency of I12 for Cd and Pb were 62.57–99.55%, respectively. SEM–EDS and XRD analysis revealed that the morphological and structural changes occurred upon heavy metal exposure, metal precipitates were also detected on cell surface. FTIR analysis indicated that functional groups (–OH, –N–H, –C = O, –C-N, –PO 4 ) were involved in Cd/Pb immobilization. Application of the bacteria, biochar, or their combination decreased the acid-extractable Cd, Pb in soil while increased the residual fractions, meanwhile, the bioavailability of both metal elements declined. Besides, these treatments increased soil enzyme (sucrase, catalase and urease) activity and accelerated pakchoi growth, heavy metal accumulation in pakchoi was depressed upon bacteria and/or biochar application, and a synergistic effect was detected when applying bacteria and biochar together. In BC + G3 and BC + I12 treated plants, the Cd and Pb accumulation decreased by 24.42% and 52.19%, 17.55% and 47.36%, respectively. Overall, our study provides an eco-friendly and promising in situ technology that could be applied in heavy metal remediation.
