Abstract:5 Statistical tools are discussed for the analysis of data collected from tractor guid6 ance systems. The importance of both accuracy and precision is discussed, and sta7 tistical tools for analysis are considered which incorporate important features of the 8 data. In particular, accuracy is modelled using a generalized least squares model in9 corporating autocorrelation, and precision using a gamma generalized linear model. 10 The methods are applied to data collected during an experiment conducted with a 11 Trimble receiver used with a Beeline tractor guidance system. Three different sce12 narios are considered, then compared: a tractor simulating ploughing a field; the 13 tractor pulling a plough with the receivers on the tractor; the tractor pulling a plough 14 with the Trimble receiver on the plough. The change in the precision and accuracy 15 between the scenarios is discussed. Data was collected over repeated swaths for each 16 scenario. After discussing specific statistical techniques for analysis of this type of 17 data, the collected data are analysed; major conclusions are: the data collected from 18 the Trimble receiver showed evidence of autocorrelation in the offsets; the implement 19 recorded a variance about three times that recorded by the tractor. 20
Hierarchical NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH Heterostructures Supported on Nickel Foam for Enhanced Overall-Water-Splitting Activity

Abstract:Low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are intensively investigated for overall water splitting. Herein, we combined experimental research with first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) to engineer the NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructure interface for enhancing overall water-splitting activity. The DFT calculations exhibit strong interaction and charge transfer between NiCo2S4 and NiFe LDH, which change the interfacial electronic structure and surface reactivity. The calculated chemisorption free energy of hydroxide (ΔEOH) is reduced from 1.56 eV for pure NiFe LDH to 1.03 eV for the heterostructures, indicating a dramatic improvement in OER performance, while the chemisorption free energy of hydrogen (ΔEH) maintains almost invariable. By the use of the facile hydrothermal method, NiCo2S4 nanotubes, NiFe LDH nanosheets, and NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructures are prepared on nickel foam, of which the corresponding experimental OER overpotentials are 306, 260, and 201 mV at 60 mA cm-2, respectively. These results are good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Meanwhile, the HER performance has little improvement, with an overpotential of about 200 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Due to the dramatic improvement in OER performance, there was an enhancement in the overall water-splitting activity of the NiCo2S4@NiFe LDH heterostructures, with a low voltage of 1.6 V.

Abstract:The development of cost-effective and highly efficient bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media plays a crucial role in advancing renewable energy conversion technologies. In this study, we successfully constructed a three-dimensional (3D) composite on nickel foam (NF) by coupling NiFe-LDH nanosheets with NiCoS nanoparticles decorated NiCo-LDH nanosheets, resulting in a NiCo-LDH@NiCoS@NiFe-LDH hierarchical heterostructure . The resulting composite exhibits abundant heterogeneous interfaces and a well-defined nanosheet array structure, allowing for numerous exposed surface active sites and open channels. The strong synergistic effect among its various components allows the heterogeneous structure to effectively optimize the electronic structures of the metal active sites. Consequently, the NiCo-LDH@NiCoS@NiFe-LDH composite demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity towards OER, achieving current densities of 50 and 100 mA cm −2 at overpotentials as low as 209 and 224 mV, respectively. This result manifests a substantial improvement over recently developed electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements. Additionally, the NiCo-LDH@NiCoS@NiFe-LDH composite can efficiently catalyze HER in an alkaline medium, with a low overpotential of 93 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. Moreover, the electrolytic cell utilizing NiCo-LDH@NiCoS@NiFe-LDH as the electrodes could realize overall water splitting with an ultralow cell voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm −2 , and excellent electrochemical stability. These findings underscore the potential for developing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts with significant implications for large-scale commercial applications of renewable energy technologies.

Abstract:To effectively address energy challenges, it is crucial to explore efficient and stable bifunctional non-precious metal catalysts. In this study, a Mo-doped nickel–iron layered double hydroxide with flower-cluster architecture was successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, which demonstrated a good water splitting performance. After an appropriate amount of Mo doping, some lattice distortions in the material provided reactive sites for the adsorption and conversion of intermediates, thus optimising the charge distribution of the material. Moreover, the multidimensional void structures formed after doping had a larger specific surface area and accelerated the penetration of the electrolyte, which significantly improved the activity of the catalyst in alkaline media. At 10 mA·cm −2 , the hydrogen and oxygen evolution overpotentials of Mo-doped nickel–iron double hydroxides (Mo–NiFe LDH/NF-0.2) were 167 and 220 mV, respectively, with an excellent durability up to 24 h. When the Mo–NiFe LDH/NF-0.2 catalyst was used as the cathode and anode of an electrolytic cell, the catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at an applied voltage of 1.643 V. This study provides a novel approach for designing excellent bifunctional electrocatalysts containing nonprecious metals.

Abstract:Developing highly active and stable noble-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution is still a challenge in electrochemical water splitting technology. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D)-networked heterogeneous electrocatalyst in the form of vertically aligned NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoflakes coupled with Fe-doped NiSx nanoparticles is supported on biomass-derived carbon microtubes (CMT). The optimal hybrid electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 210 and 157 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH, respectively. It is revealed that the remarkable features of the catalyst lie in the unique 3D open configuration, the high conductivity of CMT support and the strong interfacial coupling effects between NiFe LDH and (NiFe)S-x, giving rise to enhanced active sites, accelerating electron/ion transport, and further promoting reaction kinetics of OER/HER. Furthermore, an alkaline water electrolyzer is constructed with the NiFe LDH/(NiFe)S-x/CMT composite as catalyst for both anode and cathode. This electrolyzer displays excellent electrolysis performance (affording 10 mA cm(-2) at 1.53 V) and long-term durability over 100 h. Abstract:To develop a high efficiency non-precious electrocatalyst with cost-effective and good stability for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present a new hydrothermal method based on integrating NiCo-Layered Double Hydroxides (NiCo-LDHs) with Molybdenum Sulfide (MoS2) to develop a three-dimensional (3D) MoS2/NiCo2S4 nanostructure supported on Nickel Foam (NF). To optimize the interfacial structure and promote the catalytic activity, the molar ratio of MoS2/NiCo2S4 is used to regulate the hybrids' nanostructure. The optimal MoS2/NiCo2S4/NF is obtained as the molar ratio reaches 20%, which can be used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst with ultrahigh electrocatalytic property for HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte. As expected, the optimize MoS2/NiCo2S4/NF shows an overpotential as small as 90 and 220 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for HER and OER in 1 M KOH. Additionally, an electrolyzer is assembled where MoS2/NiCo2S4/NF serves as anode and cathode electrode, the current densities achieve 10 mA cm−2 only need a cell potential of 1.49 V. This works can provide a new window for designing high-efficiency and cost-effective non-precious bifunctional catalysts based on LDHs as precursors for HER and OER in the future.

Abstract:Efficient oxygen and hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts, based on low-cost and earth-abundant elements, are strongly required for sustainable hydrogen production through water splitting. Herein, we fabricated a monolithic-structured electrode by facilely electrodepositing NiCoFe ternary layered double hydroxides (LDHs) onto 3D conductive scaffolds, providing abundant fully exposed active sites for electrochemical reactions. The moderate Co dopant effectively improved the electrical conductivity of the LDH phase and substantially increased its intrinsic activity. When used for oxygen evolution, the as-obtained monolith LDH electrode exhibited superior kinetics with 275 mV overpotential required to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) in 0.10 M KOH, as well as a very low activation energy of 21.0 kJ mol(-1). Such a freestanding electrode was also able to catalyze hydrogen evolution efficiently in alkaline media, which further enabled a high-efficiency water electrolyzer delivering 10 mA cm(-2) at a very low cell voltage of 1.62 V in 1.0 M KOH. This sheds fresh insight into the principle and process of practical water electrolysis through the rational design of precious-metal-free bifunctional electrodes with a monolithic configuration.

Abstract:Typically, rational interfacial engineering can effectively modify the adsorption energy of active hydrogen molecules to improve water splitting efficiency. NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) composite, an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, suffers from slow hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, restricting its application for overall water splitting. Herein, we construct the hierarchical MoS2/NiFe LDH nanosheets with a heterogeneous interface used for HER and OER. Benefiting the hierarchical heterogeneous interface optimized hydrogen Gibbs free energy, tens of exposed active sites, rapid mass- and charge-transfer processes, the MoS2/NiFe LDH displays a highly efficient synergistic electrocatalytic effect. The MoS2/NiFe LDH electrode in 1 mol/L KOH exhibits excellent HER activity, only 98 mV overpotential at 10 mA/cm2. Significantly, when it assembled as anode and cathode for overall water splitting, only 1.61 V cell voltage was required to achieve 10 mA/cm2 with excellent durability (50 h).

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Developing active, stable and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with earth-abundant metals (Ni, Fe, Co) is a prerequisite to achieve overall water splitting. In this work, a novel CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) coupled with NiFe-LDH nanosheet array supported on nickel foam (denoted as CoFe@NiFe/NF) is developed through a facile hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. Remarkably, benefiting from strong synergistic effect between CoFe-LDH and NiFe-LDH and the unique structural features, the resulting CoFe@NiFe/NF architectures catalyst exhibits excellent activities and stabilities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, an efficient and stable alkali-electrolyzer using CoFe@NiFe/NF as both the cathode and anode achieve a voltage of 1.59 V at the current density of 10 mA cm‒2, which is superior to many other state-of-the-art earth-abundant electrocatalysts. This work provides a facile method for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity by constructing hierarchical core-shell architectures using the LDH nanosheet materials.

Abstract:The exploitation of bifunctional electrocatalysts for stable and efficient water splitting is of great significant for the development of clean energy industry. Herein, a hierarchical NiCo-LDH/NiCo2S4/CC electrode is prepared on carbon cloth by coupling NiCo-LDH nanosheets with NiCo2S4 nanoneedles through a simple process. This NiCo-LDH/NiCo2S4/CC electrode serves as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting with excellent activity and stability in alkaline media. The enhanced electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the hierarchical structure, the synergistic effect of NiCo-LDH and NiCo2S4 as well as the phase transformation of NiCo2S4 in alkaline condition. The NiCo-LDH/NiCo2S4/CC electrode requires overpotentials of 254 and 219 mV to deliver the current density of 50 mA cm-2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH aqueous solution, respectively. The Tafel results further reveal favorable reaction kinetics during electrolysis. When used as the bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the NiCo-LDH/NiCo2S4/CC performs superior activity with a voltage of 1.64 V at the current density of 50 mA cm-2. This work offers a new approach for the exploitation of high-performance and cost-efficient bifunctional catalysts for water splitting.

Modulating the Surface Electronic Structure of Active Ni Sites by Engineering Hierarchical NiFe-LDH/CuS over Cu Foam as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Abstract:Water electrolysis encounters a challenging problem in designing a highly efficient, long durable, non-noble metal-free electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, in our work, a two-step hydrothermal reaction was performed to construct a hierarchal NiFe-layer double hydroxide (LDH)/CuS over copper foam for the overall water splitting reaction. While employed the same as an anode material, the designed heterostructure electrode NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu exhibits excellent OER performance and it demands 249 mV overpotential to reach a current density of 50 mA cm-2 with a lower Tafel slope value of 81.84 mV dec-1. While as a cathode material, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu shows superior HER performance and it demands just 28 mV of overpotential value to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a lower Tafel slope value of 95.98 mV dec-1. Hence, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu outperforms the commercial Pt/C and RuO2 in terms of activity in HER and OER, respectively. Moreover, when serving as both the cathode and anode catalysts in an electrolyzer for total water splitting, the synthesized electrode only needs a cell potential of 1.55 V versus RHE to reach a current density of 20 mA cm-2 and long-term durability for 25 h in alkaline media. To study the interfacial electron transfer, Mott-Schottky experiments were performed, representing that the electron is transferred from n-type NiFe-LDH to p-type CuS as a result of creating the p-n junction in NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu. The formation of this p-n junction allows the LDH layer to be more active toward the OH- adsorption and thereby could allow the OER or HER with a less energy input. This work affords another route to a cost effective, highly efficient catalyst toward producing clean energy across the globe.

Abstract:Herein, a self‐supported, robust, and noble‐metal‐free 3D hierarchical interface‐rich Fe‐doped Co‐LDH@MoS2‐Ni3S2/NF heterostructure electrocatalyst has been prepared through a controllable two‐step hydrothermal process. The resultant electrode shows low overpotential of ⁓95 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), ⁓220 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the two‐electrode system requires only a cell voltage of ⁓1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density, respectively. Extensive ab initio calculations were carried out to find out the overpotential for HER, orbital interaction through the determination of electron density of states and quantification of charge transfer by Bader charge analysis. The computed overpotential matched closely with the experimental data. The superior HER performance of the tri‐layer is enhanced due to the charge transfer (1.7444e) to Fe‐doped Co‐LDH from Ni3S2‐MoS2 hybrid. This research strategy paves an effective pathway for affordable green H2 production and future efficient non‐precious bifunctional electrocatalyst design for overall water electrolysis.

Self-Supported Nickel Iron Layered Double Hydroxide-Nickel Selenide Electrocatalyst for Superior Water Splitting Activity

Abstract:The design of efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalyst systems toward energy conversion is highly demanding for their practical use. Large scale electrolytic water splitting is considered as a promising strategy for clean and sustainable energy production. Herein, we report a self-supported NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)-NiSe electrocatalyst by stepwise surface-redox-etching of Ni foam (NF) through a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared NiFe LDH-NiSe/NF catalyst exhibits far better performance in alkaline water oxidation, proton reduction, and overall water splitting compared to NiSex/NF or NiFe LDH/NF. Only 240 mV overpotential is required to obtain a water oxidation current density of 100 mA cm-2, whereas the same for the hydrogen evolution reaction is 276 mV in 1.0 M KOH. The synergistic effect from NiSe and NiFe LDH leads to the evolution of a highly efficient catalyst system for water splitting by achieving 10 mA cm-2 current density at only 1.53 V in a two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer. In addition, the designed electrode produces stable performance for a long time even at higher current density to demonstrate its robustness and prospective as a real-life energy conversion system.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still a key challenge at the current stage. Herein, FeNi LDH/V2CTx/nickel foam (NF) self-supported bifunctional electrode was prepared via deposition of FeNi LDH on V2CTx/NF substrate by hydrothermal method. Strong interfacial interaction between V2CTx/NF and FeNi LDH effectively prevented the aggregation of FeNi LDH, thus exposing more catalytic active sites, which improved electrical conductivity of the nanohybrids and structural stability. The results indicated that the prepared FeNi LDH/V2CTx/NF required 222 mV and 151 mV overpotential for OER and HER in 1 M KOH to provide 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Besides, the FeNi LDH/V2CTx/NF electrocatalysts were applied to overall water splitting, which achieved a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 1.74 V. This work provides ideas for improving the electrocatalytic performance of electrocatalysts through simple synthesis strategies, structural adjustment, use of conductive substrates and formation of hierarchical structures.

Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDHs) have been intensively developed for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media; however, their unsatisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance limits their practical application in overall water splitting. Herein, a simple and efficient one-step electrodeposition method is used to accomplish in situ growth of NiFe LDHs–NiFe alloy gradient hybrid coatings on a carbon cloth (CC). Within the binder-free electrode, NiFe LDHs nanosheets with a low-crystalline nature exhibit highly active bifunctional OER/HER activities, and the NiFe alloy acts as a stable electron highway and strong skeleton bridge between NiFe LDHs and the CC. When the electrodes are simultaneously employed as the cathode and anode for overall water splitting, they require low cell potentials of 1.441 V at 10 mA·cm −2 and 1.703 V at 100 mA·cm −2 , respectively, and they demonstrate outstanding stability at a current density greater than 100 mA·cm −2 for more than 100 h. This is one of the best bifunctional OER and HER catalysts for overall water splitting. Both lattice defects and surface reconstructions crucially contribute to the bifunctional OER/HER activities of NiFe LDHs. This simple and scalable synthesis approach presents an intriguing paradigm for industrial production, and the fabricated electrode has potential application in high-current-density water splitting.

Abstract:The development of inexpensive, high efficiency electrocatalysts is a major challenge for electrolytic water to hydrogen production. Herein, an efficient porous nanoblock catalyst N-doped Fe2O3/NiTe2 heterojunction for overall water splitting is reported. Notably, the obtained 3D self-supported catalysts exhibit good hydrogen evolution.reaction (HER) activity and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties in alkaline solution (only 70 mV and 253 mV of overpotential are needed to provide 10 mA cm-2 current density, respectively). This is mainly due to the N-doped electronic structure optimized, the strong electronic interaction between Fe2O3 and NiTe2 that facilitates rapid electron transfer, the porous structure which allows the catalyst to have large surface area for effective gas release, and their synergistic effect. When used as a dual func-tion catalyst with overall water splitting, it achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 under 1.54 V with good durability (at least 42 h). Abstract:In response to society's urgent drive to significantly decrease its reliance on fossil fuels in the future, there has been continuing efforts to utilize hydrogen (H 2 ) generated by water electrolysis as clean and sustainable substitute for the traditional fossil fuels. A significant challenge in water electrolysis revolves around creating affordable and efficient electrocatalysts to speed up the chemical reactions involved. Our new study introduces a bifunctional catalyst made from a high-entropy alloy (HEA), capable of efficiently catalyzing both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The findings reveal that a complex chemical composition of FeCoNiCuTi HEA can significantly modify its electronic structure, resulting in an impressive electrocatalytic performance. Specifically, FeCoNiCuTi HEA catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 64.9 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution with a Tafel slope of 36.81 mV dec −1 and double-layer capacitance ( Cdl ) of 34.1 mF cm −2 . For oxygen evolution, HEA achieves an overpotential of 175 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 44.31 mV dec −1 , exhibiting the performance superior to noble catalysts. Theoretical calculations support that the intricate chemical composition of high-entropy alloy plays vital role to enhance its electrocatalytic capabilities. This research represents a straightforward efficient method to create electrocatalysts for water electrolysis using non-noble metals by leveraging high-entropy effect.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high efficiency for overall water splitting is still a challenging task. In this work, we introduce a novel one-step synthesis method for Pt/NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) on an iron-nickel foam (INF) substrate under mild conditions. This method eliminates the need for additional Ni or Fe ions and facilitates in-situ etching and growth processes under mild conditions, resulting in a higher active surface area, well-dispersed low-loading Pt nanoparticles, and a self-supported electrode without binders. These features collectively enhance electron transfer and catalytic activity for both HER and OER. The Pt/NiFe LDH/INF exhibits remarkable water splitting performance, requiring a cell voltage of only 1.44 V at10 mA cm −2 when used as both anode and cathode. Additionally, it remains stable at 20 mA cm −2 for at least 16 h. The exceptional water splitting activity of Pt/NiFe LDH/INF in alkaline solution can be attributed to the synergistic effects of Pt and NiFe LDH, which improve the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction efficiencies. The results provide valuable insights into designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with low Pt loading for optimal water splitting performance at low operating cost.

Abstract:Interfacial engineering in the rapid development of high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting has been explored as a promising strategy to improve catalytic performance due to the tunable free energy of reaction intermediates on the interfacial compositions. Here, multiple-interfacial Ni/molybdenum carbide hybrid nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Ni/Mo2C@NC) electrocatalyst were fabricated via a solid-state co-reduction method. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with an overpotential of 91 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 74 mV/dec in alkaline solution, and outstanding stability owing to the high conductivity, abundant interfacial active sites, and synergistic effect between Ni and Mo2C nanoparticles. This electrocatalyst as bifunctional electrode possesses an applied voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA/cm2 and long-term durability in an electrolysis cell. Moreover, density functional theory calculations reveal that the electron transfer across Ni/Mo2C heterointerfaces could optimize the water adsorption/dissociation and H adsorption/desorption capacities, thereby boosting the intrinsic HER activity.
