Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is an effective metrological tool to characterize the variation in weak refractive index (RI) and nanostructure parameters. In this Letter, a highly sensitive terahertz Janus sensor (JS) based on PSHE is proposed. Through the asymmetric arrangement of different dielectrics, the sensor has a Janus feature, realizing the multitasking of thickness and RI detection on multiple scales. When electromagnetic waves (EWs) are incident into the JS from the forward scale, the number of graphene layers (1–7 layers) can be exactly identified by thickness detection. Enhancing the PSHE by the property of graphene, the JS can extend the thickness change of the graphene layer at the nanometer level by 106 times to the millimeter level with a sensitivity of 3.02 × 10−3 m/nm. In the case of EWs backward scale propagation, based on the sensitivity of 6.244 × 10−3 m/RIU, the JS can identify different kinds of waterborne bacterium such as Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli, and Shigella flexneri, in the RI range of 1.355–1.43 with high precision. The design of the multiscale and multitasking JS with high sensitivity is of great significance for accelerating the research and exploration of graphene materials. In addition, it provides an idea for real-time, no-label, and low-cost detection in the biomedical field.

Abstract:We describe a two-dimensional polarization interferometry based parallel scan angular surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensing technique. The method of line-shaped light illumination and parallel scan offers a high throughput. The simultaneous record of SPR angular spectrum enables the system to be unaffected by the time-dependent variation of the light source. The polarization interferometry technique lowers the minimum of the SPR dip and thereby reduces the noise related to the light intensity. Refractive index resolutions of 1.4 × 10(-6) refractive index unit (RIU) under normal condition and 4.6 × 10(-7) RIU under a more time-consuming condition are achieved in our angle interrogation based sensor. Meanwhile, a manually prepared DNA microarray has been detected, showing the potential applications of this technique in microarray analysis.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a MgF2/Au/MgF2/Analyte based, angle-interrogation surface plasmon resonance sensor. This symmetrical structure results in higher surface electric field strengths, and longer surface propagation lengths and depths. A refractive index resolution of 8.1×10−8RIU in fluid protocol and 3.5×10−7RIU in atmosphere protocol is acquired by a simple SPR imaging system. In order to demonstrate the biomedical applications of this system, we detect Escherichia coli with different concentrations using dopamine film on the sensor surface to immobilize antibodies. A detection limit of 103cfu/mL of E. coli bacteria is acquired from this system.

Abstract:In this paper, a Janus metastructure sensor (JMS) based on the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), which can detect multiple physical quantities, is proposed. The Janus property is derived from the fact that the asymmetric arrangement of different dielectrics breaks the structure parity. Hence, the metastructure is endowed with different detection performances for physical quantities on multiple scales, broadening the range and improving the accuracy of the detection. When electromagnetic waves (EWs) are incident from the forward scale of the JMS, the refractive index, thickness, and incidence angle can be detected by locking the angle corresponding to the PSHE displacement peak that is enhanced by the graphene. The relevant detection ranges are 2~2.4, 2~2.35 μm, and 27°~47°, with sensitivities (S) of 81.35°/RIU, 64.84°/μm, and 0.02238 THz/°, respectively. Under the condition that EWs incident into the JMS from the backward direction, the JMS can also detect the same physical quantities with different sensing properties, such as S of 99.3°/RIU, 70.07°/μm, and 0.02348 THz/° in corresponding detection ranges of 2~2.09, 1.85~2.02 μm, and 20°~40°. This novel multifunctional JMS is a supplement to the traditional single-function sensor and has a certain prospect in the field of multiscenario applications.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing technology is widely used in the field of biosensors due to its non-marking, high-sensitivity, and non-invasive characteristics. However, SPR technology is still limited to sensing analysis in two-dimensional plane, axial detection, as the key of SPR application in three-dimensional medium spatial detection, has not been well studied and solved. In an angle-interrogation SPR sensing system, the spatial characteristics of evanescent wave-dielectric interaction at multiple wavelengths are studied, and the factors affecting the spatial distribution of surface plasmon resonance are also analyzed. An axial spatial resolution method based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with multi-wavelength angle-interrogation structure is proposed, the refractive index distribution in axial space is determined by analyzing the characteristic SPR signal. In addition, the calculation and analysis of the applicable range of wavelengths are carried out. In the reliable spectral range of the incident light wavelength of 600-900 nm, the average error of the axial refractive index spatial resolution increases from 10(-5) RIU to 10(-4) RIU as the number of axial layers increases. The proposed multi-wavelength angle modulation structure analysis method based on PSO algorithm extends the SPR detection range from two-dimensional plane to three-dimensional space, which provides a new and promising analysis model for molecular biology.

Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), as a novel physical effect in light-matter interaction, provides an effective metrological method for characterizing the tiny variation in refractive index (RI). In this work, we proposed a multi-functional PSHE sensor based on VO 2 , a material that exhibits phase transition behavior. By applying thermal control, the mutual transformation on different phase states of VO 2 can be realized, which contributes to the flexible switching between multiple RI sensing tasks. When VO 2 is insulating, the ultrasensitive detection of glucose concentrations in human blood is achieved. When VO 2 is in a mixed phase, the designed structure can discriminate the normal and cancer cells with no-label and real-time monitoring. When VO 2 is metallic, the proposed PSHE sensor can act as a RI pointer for gas analytes. Compared with other multi-functional sensing devices with the complex structures, our design only consists of one analyte and two VO 2 layers, which is very simple and elegant. Therefore, the proposed VO 2 -based PSHE sensor with outstanding advantages of small size, high sensitivity, no-label, and real-time detection, offers new ideas for the research of tunable multi-functional sensors.

Abstract:A Refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg grating and stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and demonstrated. The cladding modes of the tilted fiber Bragg grating is sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and the approach relies on refractive index dependent resonance wavelength shift of the modes. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is introduced to measure the wavelength shift due to its narrow bandwidth, which enhances the wavelength resolution to 0.25 pm and provides much higher refractive index sensitivity than traditional wavelength readout methods. This kind sensor is suitable to sense a very small variation of refractive index and the sensitivities can reach to a resolution of 1.27 × 10(-4) RIU with the refractive index ranging from 1.3405 to 1.4025 and a resolution of 2.49 × 10(-5) RIU ranging from 1.4025 to 1.4219, respectively.
Temperature-insensitive Cascaded Micro-Ring Resonator Silicon Photoelectric Sensor Based on Wavelength Interrogation for HSA Detection

Abstract:Silicon-based optical biosensors have garnered significant interest since their inception. They are, however, susceptible to temperature fluctuations in a controlled environment. In order to address this issue, we provide a solution including the utilization of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) cascaded micro-ring resonators (CMRR) biosensor that is designed to be insensitive to temperature changes. It consists of two ring resonators exposed to the reference solution and analyte, respectively, their radius and waveguide width are designed to meet the temperature-insensitivity criterion of the CMRR sensor. The results of experiments indicate that by real-time monitoring of the envelope peak drift in the transmission spectrum of the sensor, the bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity is 2940.71 nm/RIU, the limit of detection (LOD) is 3.1x10- 5 RIU, and the temperature sensitivity is less than 40 pm/degree celsius. Furthermore, the sensor was applied for HSA detection, with a calculated LOD of 18.09 ng/mL. The effect of temperature on HSA detection is much smaller than that of a CMRR sensor without athermal design. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and temperature insensitivity, and the absence of negative thermo-optic coefficient materials or supplementary temperature control mechanisms simplifies its practical applications. It can be made by a large array to detect different type protein molecules for high throughput multiparameter analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic resonance and electrical resonance can be excited simultaneously by the incident light source in high refractive index all-dielectric metasurfaces. They can manipulate light waves to a certain extent and can be used in many fields. Silicon is widely used in all-dielectric metasurfaces due to its high refractive index and low loss in near infrared range. In this paper, we use silicon nanodisk structure as refractive index sensor and PDMS microfluidic channels as detection channels to realize liquid refractive index sensing. The magnetic resonance peak of the nanodisk structure is selected for sensing. The position of the magnetic resonance is shifted in the transmission spectrum with the change of the refractive index of the surrounding environment. When the refractive index increases, the resonance peak moves towards the long-wave direction, resulting in red shift, and vice versa. In this paper, the shift of resonance peak reaches 230 nm RIU−1.

Abstract:A high-property plasma resonance-sensor structure consisting of two metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides coupled with a transverse ladder-shaped nano-cavity (TLSNC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. Its transmission characteristics are analyzed using multimode interference coupling mode theory (MICMT), and are simulated using finite element analysis (FEA). Meanwhile, the influence of different structural arguments on the performance of the structure is investigated. This study shows that the system presents four high-quality formants in the transmission spectrum. The highest sensitivity is 3000 nm/RIU with a high FOM* of 9.7 × 105. In addition, the proposed structure could act as a biosensor to detect the concentrations of sodium ions (Na+), potassium ions (K+), and the glucose solution with maximum sensitivities of 0.45, 0.625 and 5.5 nm/mgdL−1, respectively. Compared with other structures, the designed system has the advantages of a simple construction, a wide working band range, high reliability and easy nano-scale integration, providing a high-performance cavity choice for refractive index sensing and biosensing devices based on surface plasmons.

Abstract:Optical biosensors with the high sensitivity is an important tool for environment monitoring, disease diagnosis and drug development. Integrating the biosensor could reduce the size and cost and is desirable for home and outdoor use. However, the integrated structure always results in the worsening of sensitivity and narrowing of sensing range, especially for small molecule sensing. In this work, we propose an integrated plasmonic biosensor based on the resonant structure composed of dielectric grating and metal film. With vertically incident light from the grating side, the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode could be excited at certain wavelength and the reflected light would vanish. Simulation results indicate that, when varying refractive index (n(det)) of detection layer, the energy of reflected light changes dramatically. Assuming the resolution of the power meter is 0.01dB, the sensing resolution could be 4.37x10(-6) RIU, which is very close to the bulk lens based SPP biosensor by monitoring the light intensity variation. Since antibody and antigen always have the size of tens of nanometers, it is necessary to check the sensing ability of the sensor in tens of nanometers. Fixing n(det) and varying the thickness of detection layer, calculation result demonstrates that the reflected light energy is sensitive to the thickness change with one hundred nanometers. This attributes to the surface mode property of SPP mode.
Multi-resonance plasmonic refractive index sensor based on maze-shaped resonators for biological applications

Abstract:Herein, a plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with maze-shaped resonators is proposed and numerically investigated using finite element method (FEM). Various geometrical parameter impacts on the transmission spectrum are examined to optimize the sensor's performance. Additionally, the effect of using SiO2 as a dielectric material instead of air has been investigated. The proposed sensor can achieve maximum RI sensitivity, figure of merit (FoM), and sensing resolution (SR) of 3340 nm/RIU, 143.33 RIU-1, and 2.99×10-6 RIU, respectively, in the 500-3500 nm wavelength range. The designed structure is investigated for potential applications in different biological fields, including detecting cancer cells, determining blood hemoglobin levels, and glucose concentrations. This sensor can detect MCF-7 cancer cells with a maximum sensitivity of 3543 nm/RIU and can achieve the sensitivity of 0.407 nm.L/g for glucose concentration and 3329.41 nm/RIU for blood hemoglobin level. The structure presented in this study has promising specifications, making it suitable for use in optical integrated circuits, particularly in highly sensitive sensors.

Abstract:Silicon photonic-based refractive index sensors are of great value in the detection of gases, biological and chemical substances. Among them, microring resonators are the most promising due to their compact size and narrow Lorentzian-shaped spectrum. The electric field in a subwavelength grating waveguide (SWG) is essentially confined in the low-refractive index dielectric, favoring enhanced analyte-photon interactions, which represents higher sensitivity. However, it is very challenging to further significantly improve the sensitivity of SWG ring resonator refractive index sensors. Here, a hybrid waveguide blocks double slot subwavelength grating microring resonator (HDSSWG-MRR) refractive index sensor operating in a water refractive index environment is proposed. By designing a new waveguide structure, a sensitivity of up to 1005 nm/RIU has been achieved, which is 182 nm/RIU higher than the currently highest sensitivity silicon photonic micro ring refractive index sensor. Meanwhile, utilizing a unique waveguide structure, a Q of 22,429 was achieved and a low limit of detection of 6.86 × 10−5 RIU was calculated.

Mono/dual-polarization refractive-index biosensors with enhanced sensitivity based on annular photonic crystals

Abstract:To promote the development of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PCs) based refractive-index (RI) biosensors, there is an urgent requirement of an effective approach to improve the RI sensitivity of 2D PCs (usually less than 500 nm/RIU). In this work, the photonic band gap (PBG) feature and the corresponding RI sensitivity of the air-ring type 2D annular PCs (APCs) have been studied in detail. Such type of 2D PCs can easily and apparently improve the RI sensitivity in comparison with conventional air-hole type 2D PCs that have been widely studied in previous works. This is because the APCs can naturally exhibit suppressed up edge of PBG that can strongly affect the final RI sensitivity. In general, an enhanced sensing performance of as high as up to 2-3 times RI sensitivity can be obtained from pure 2D APCs. Such high RI sensitivity is also available in three typical waveguides developed from pure 2D APCs. Furthermore, a new conception of dual-polarization RI biosensors has been proposed by defining the RI sensitivity as the difference of crossing relative sensitivity of up-edge PBG between different polarizations. Based on pure 2D APCs, a dual-polarization RI biosensor with high RI sensitivity of around 1190 nm/RIU in infrared range was also presented as an example.

Ultra-sensitive Refractive Index Sensing Enabled by a Dramatic Ellipsometric Phase Change at the Band Edge in a One-Dimensional Photonic Crystal

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and Bloch surface waves (BSWs) have been widely utilized to design sensitive refractive index sensors. However, SPP- and BSW-based refractive index sensors require additional coupling component (prism) or coupling structure (grating or fiber), which increases the difficulty to observe ultra-sensitive refractive index sensing in experiments. Herein, we realize dramatic ellipsometric phase change at the band edges in an all-dielectric one-dimensional photonic crystal for oblique incidence. By virtue of the dramatic ellipsometric phase change at the long-wavelength band edge, we design an ultra-sensitive refractive index sensor at near-infrared wavelengths. The minimal resolution of the designed sensor reaches 9.28×10-8 RIU. Compared with SPP- and BSW-based refractive index sensors, the designed ultra-sensitive refractive index sensor does not require any additional coupling component or coupling structure. Such ultra-sensitive refractive index sensor would possess applications in monitoring temperature, humidity, pressure, and concentration of biological analytes.
A novel photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor with ultra wide detection range based on surface plasmon resonance effect

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index (RI) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect is proposed. With the full vector finite element method, the SPR-PCF RI sensor is designed, and the mode coupling effects between the X-polarization (X-pol) and Y-polarization (Y-pol) core modes and second-order surface plasmon polariton modes are analyzed. The simulation results show that the structure parameters of the proposed PCF have significant influences on the resonance wavelength drift and wavelength sensitivity (WS). Finally, in the RI range of 1.32 ~ 1.48, the average WSs of the X-pol and Y-pol core modes can reach − 4735.83 nm/RIU and − 4525.83 nm/RIU, respectively. Moreover, the maximum resolution (R) and figure of merits (FOM) of the X-pol and Y-pol core modes are 4.71 × 10−6 and 4.65 × 10−6 RIU, and 134 and 177 RIU−1, respectively. Compared with other reported results, the proposed SPR-PCF RI sensor can achieve wide detection range, high average WS, good linearity, high R, and large FOM, so it will have important applications in the fields of biochemistry, medicine, and environmental science.

Highly Sensitive Refractive Index Sensor Based on Bloch Surface Waves with Lithium Niobate Film

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a novel Bloch surface wave (BSW) sensor with high sensitivity. A lithium niobate (LiNbO3) film is introduced on the top layer of SiO2/TiO2 one-dimensional photonic crystal. BSW resonance is excited by the Kretschmann prism. The rigorous coupled wave analysis method (RCWA) is used to conduct numerical simulation analysis of the designed BSW sensor. The wavelength and azimuth sensitivity of the designed sensor can reach 1522 nm/RIU and 646°/RIU, respectively, or even higher. The results reveal the potential application of LiNbO3 as a tunable material in the field of refractive index sensors for chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A novel photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor for refractive index detection based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is presented in this research, as well as designs for single-channel and dual-channel structures for this PDMS-PCF sensor. The proposed structures can be used to develop sensors with biocompatible polymers. The performance of the single-channel PDMS-PCF sensor was studied, and it was found that adjusting parameters such as pore diameter, lattice constant, distance between the D-shaped structure and the fiber core, and the radius of gold nanoparticles can optimize the sensor's performance. The findings indicate that the detection range of the single-channel photonic crystal is 1.21–1.27. The maximum wavelength sensitivity is 10,000 nm/RIU with a resolution of 1×10−5 RIU, which is gained when the refractive index is set to 1.27. Based on the results of the single-channel PCF, a dual-channel PDMS-PCF sensor is designed. The refractive index detection range of the proposed sensor is 1.2–1.28. The proposed sensor has a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 13,000 nm/RIU and a maximum resolution of 7.69×10−6 RIU at a refractive index of 1.28. The designed PDMS-PCF holds tremendous potential for applications in the analysis and detection of substances in the human body in the future.

Abstract:In order to achieve a high-precision synchronous detection of two different refractive index (RI) analytes, a D-type surface plasmon resonance (SPR) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) RI sensor based on two channels is designed in this paper. The sensor uses a D-shaped planar region of the PCF and a large circular air hole below the core as the sensing channels. Surface plasmon resonance is induced by applying a coating of gold film on the surface. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is used to optimize the structural parameters of the optical fiber, and the sensing characteristics are studied, including wavelength sensitivity, RI resolution, full width at half maximum (FWHM), figure of merit (FOM), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The results show that the channel 1 (Ch 1) can achieve RI detection of 1.36-1.39 in the wavelength range of 1500-2600 nm, and the channel 2 (Ch 2) can achieve RI detection of 1.46-1.57 in the wavelength range of 2100-3000 nm. The two sensing channels can detect independently or simultaneously measure two analytes with different RIs. The maximum wavelength sensitivity of the sensor can reach 30,000 nm/RIU in Channel 1 and 9900 nm/RIU in Channel 2. The RI resolutions of the two channels are 3.54 × 10-6 RIU and 10.88 × 10-6 RIU, respectively. Therefore, the sensor realizes dual-channel high- and low-RI synchronous detection in the ultra-long wavelength band from near-infrared to mid-infrared and achieves an ultra-wide RI detection range and ultra-high wavelength sensitivity. The sensor has a wide application prospect in the fields of chemical detection, biomedical sensing, and water environment monitoring.
Optical steelyard: high-resolution and wide-range refractive index sensing by synergizing Fabry–Perot interferometer with metafibers

Abstract:Refractive index (RI) sensors play an important role in various applications including biomedical analysis and food processing industries. However, developing RI sensors with both high resolution and wide linear range remains a great challenge due to the tradeoff between quality ( Q ) factor and free spectral range ( FSR ) of resonance mode. Herein, the optical steelyard principle is presented to address this challenge by synergizing resonances from the Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity and metasurface, integrated in a hybrid configuration form on the end facet of optical fibers. Specifically, the FP resonance acting like the scale beam, offers high resolution while the plasmonic resonance acting like the weight, provides a wide linear range. Featuring asymmetric Fano spectrum due to modal coupling between these two resonances, a high Q value (~ 3829 in liquid) and a sensing resolution (figure of merit) of 2664 RIU −1 are experimentally demonstrated. Meanwhile, a wide RI sensing range (1.330–1.430 in the simulation and 1.3403–1.3757 in the experiment) is realized, corresponding to a spectral shift across several FSR s (four and two FSR s in the simulation and experiment, respectively). The proposed steelyard RI sensing strategy is promising in versatile monitoring applications, e.g., water salinity/turbidity and biomedical reaction process, and could be extended to other types of sensors calling for both high resolution and wide linear range.
