Abstract:Aiming at the raster image of architecture floor plan, this paper presents a lightweight algorithm for automatically generating 3D building models. Firstly, IPF (integral projection function) is applied to split up the raster image, and effectively extract the sub-regions which contain the walls. Then, based on the improved SPV (sparse pixel vectorization) algorithm, this paper obtains information such as the location and the size of these walls. In order to identify the architectural components in the wall, like windows, doors and holes, the problem is transformed into solving image multiple classifications. And this paper proposes an efficient method to locate each architectural component in the drawing accurately, then insert them into the walls correctly. Finally, based on the identification result, the 3D building model can be generated rapidly. With the help of CEMO (conceptual and expressive modeling), a quick modeling system is developed, the 3D data will be processed conveniently as well. A large number of experiments prove that the method in this paper is robust and efficient. The method has many useful applications such as digital city, virtual reality authoring and public security planning.
Construction for UAV Tilt Photogrammetry Model of Low-Altitude State in Urban Area and Engineering Application

Abstract:In terms of the shortcomings of traditional vertical photogrammetry in urban modeling, such as tilt deformation and occlusion of near ground objects, a typical area in Qiaocheng District of Bozhou City, China is selected as the study area. DOM, TDOM, vertical traditional 3D model, vertical true 3D model as well as realistic 3D model based on low-altitude vertical photogrammetry and tilt photogrammetry data of the study area are constructed, comparing the modeling accuracy of different models, and the accuracy of DLG production and drawing details of different 3D models as well as the accuracy of extraction of building area are studied. The spatial data of the check points in the study area is measured to test the feasibility of constructing large scale (1:500) of digital line graphs via different 3D models. The results show that: ①the mean square error in plane of DOM, TDOM, vertical traditional 3D model, vertical true 3D model and realistic 3D model is respectively ±0.368cm, ±0.78cm, ±4.67cm, ±2.63cm, ±0.80cm, the mean square error in elevation of which is respectively±8.16cm, ±0.89cm, ±8.17cm, ±0.84cm, ±0.93cm. ②refer to the "Code for Aerial Triangulation of Digital Aerial Photogrammetry", according to the realistic 3D model, the minimum accuracy in plane is 4.79cm, the maximum accuracy in plane is 0.15cm, and the mean square error in plane is ±0.80cm; the minimum accuracy in elevation is -5.72cm, and the maximum accuracy in elevation is 0.26cm, the mean square error in elevation is ±0.93cm, it can be seen that the realistic 3D model meets the standard of large scale (1:500) topographic map drawing. ③measure 150 evenly distributed checkpoints in the study area through GPS RTK, and compare them with the elevation check points extracted from the DLGs produced by the vertical traditional 3D model, the vertical true 3D model as well as the realistic 3D model, the maximum error in elevation of the comparison result is 54.39cm, 17.41cm as well as 14.89cm respectively, and the mean square error in elevation is ±2.27cm, ±0.35cm as well as 0.33cm respectively, referring to "1:500 1:1000 1:2000 Topographic Map Aerial Photogrammetry Industry Specifications", it can be seen that the digital line graphs constructed by vertical true 3D model and realistic 3D model meet the accuracy of drawing large scale (1:500) digital line graph, specially, the digital line graph constructed by the realistic 3D model is more complete and more accurate.
Automatic Extraction of Building Elevation Contours Based on LIDAR Data

Abstract:This paper presents a boundary extraction method of contour approximation for facade building based on 3D laser point cloud data. The method generates grids with a certain density according to the view projection of point cloud data at first. Then, detect the outline of grids through the mark and finally describe the actual contours of buildings with boundary feature for further. The experimental results show that the algorithm does not need other auxiliary data, and describes the inside and outside contours of the building more quickly and stably, especially in the complex urban environment without being influenced by the sampling frequency and the density of point clouds. The extraction accuracy of building boundary can be up to 90% or more.

Abstract:Three-dimensional indoor models have wide applications in fields such as indoor navigation, civil engineering, virtual reality, and so on. With the development of LiDAR technology, automatic reconstruction of indoor models from point clouds has gained significant attention. We propose a new framework for generating indoor 3D digital models from point clouds. The proposed method first generates a room instance map of an indoor scene. Walls are detected and projected onto a horizontal plane to form line segments. These segments are extended, intersected, and, by solving an integer programming problem, line segments are selected to create room polygons. The polygons are converted into a raster image, and image connectivity detection is used to generate a room instance map. Then the roofs of the point cloud are extracted and used to perform an overlap analysis with the generated room instance map to segment the entire roof point cloud, obtaining the roof for each room. Room boundaries are defined by extracting and regularizing the roof point cloud boundaries. Finally, by detecting doors and windows in the scene in two steps, we generate the floor plans and 3D models separately. Experiments with the Giblayout dataset show that our method is robust to clutter and furniture point clouds, achieving high-accuracy models that match real scenes. The mean precision and recall for the floorplans are both 0.93, and the Point–Surface Distance (PSD) and standard deviation of the PSD for the 3D models are 0.044 m and 0.066 m, respectively.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese buildings serve as a carrier for the inheritance of traditional culture and national characteristics. In the context of rural revitalization, achieving the 3D reconstruction of traditional village buildings is a crucial technical approach to promoting rural planning, improving living environments, and establishing digital villages. However, traditional algorithms primarily target urban buildings, exhibiting limited adaptability and less ideal feature extraction performance for traditional residential buildings. As a result, guaranteeing the accuracy and reliability of 3D models for different types of traditional buildings remains challenging. In this paper, taking Jingping Village in Western Hunan as an example, we propose a method that combines multiple algorithms based on the slope segmentation of the roof to extract feature lines. Firstly, the VDVI and CSF algorithms are used to extract the building and roof point clouds based on the MVS point cloud. Secondly, according to roof features, village buildings are classified, and a 3D roof point cloud is projected into 2D regular grid data. Finally, the roof slope is segmented via slope direction, and internal and external feature lines are obtained after refinement through Canny edge detection and Hough straight line detection. The results indicate that the CSF algorithm can effectively extract the roofs of I-shaped, L-shaped, and U-shaped traditional buildings. The accuracy of roof surface segmentation based on slope exceeds 99.6%, which is significantly better than the RANSAC algorithm and the region segmentation algorithm. This method is capable of efficiently extracting the characteristic lines of roofs in low-rise buildings within traditional villages. It provides a reference method for achieving the high-precision modeling of traditional village architecture at a low cost and with high efficiency.

City3D: Large-Scale Building Reconstruction from Airborne LiDAR Point Clouds

Abstract:We present a fully automatic approach for reconstructing compact 3D building models from large-scale airborne point clouds. A major challenge of urban reconstruction from airborne LiDAR point clouds lies in that the vertical walls are typically missing. Based on the observation that urban buildings typically consist of planar roofs connected with vertical walls to the ground, we propose an approach to infer the vertical walls directly from the data. With the planar segments of both roofs and walls, we hypothesize the faces of the building surface, and the final model is obtained by using an extended hypothesis-and-selection-based polygonal surface reconstruction framework. Specifically, we introduce a new energy term to encourage roof preferences and two additional hard constraints into the optimization step to ensure correct topology and enhance detail recovery. Experiments on various large-scale airborne LiDAR point clouds have demonstrated that the method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods in terms of reconstruction accuracy and robustness. In addition, we have generated a new dataset with our method consisting of the point clouds and 3D models of 20k real-world buildings. We believe this dataset can stimulate research in urban reconstruction from airborne LiDAR point clouds and the use of 3D city models in urban applications.

Abstract:<p>Three dimensional (3D) geometric models of buildings are foundational for urban building energy modeling. A complete 3D geometric model contains building-relevant information like building footprint, height and Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR). Existing methods creating these models have certain limitations, such as unavailability of Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data for many cities, and restricted flying space for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). To tackle these issues, this study has developed a systematic method developing 3D geometric models, with 1) building footprint acquired from combination of two internet maps, namely Baidu Map and OpenStreetMap; 2) building height estimated from the number of storeys for residential buildings and determined using the building vertical edge method for non-residential buildings, and 3) building WWR calculated from buildings' elevation images using an Artificial Intelligence (AI). The validation work revealed that more than 85% of acquired building footprints had absolute relative errors less than 10%, and this percentage was 87%, 74% and 75%, for height of residential buildings, height of non-residential buildings and WWR, respectively. To demonstrate the application of the method, a newly developed urban district in Nanjing, China was used as a case study.</p>

Layer-Wise Floorplan Extraction for Automatic Urban Building Reconstruction

Abstract:Urban building reconstruction is an important step for urban digitization and realisticvisualization. In this paper, we propose a novel automatic method to recover urban building geometry from 3D point clouds. The proposed method is suitable for buildings composed of planar polygons and aligned with the gravity direction, which are quite common in the city. Our key observation is that the building shapes are usually piecewise constant along the gravity direction and determined by several dominant shapes. Based on this observation, we formulate building reconstruction as an energy minimization problem under the Markov Random Field (MRF) framework. Specifically, point clouds are first cutinto a sequence of slices along the gravity direction. Then, floorplans are reconstructed by extracting boundaries of these slices, among which dominant floorplans are extracted and propagated to other floors via MRF. To guarantee correct propagation, a new distance measurement for floorplans is designed, which first encodes floorplans into strings and then calculates distances between their corresponding strings. Additionally, an image based editing method is also proposed to recover detailed window structures. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data sets have validated the effectiveness of our method.
An Algorithm for Building Exterior Facade Corner Point Extraction Based on UAV Images and Point Clouds

Abstract:The high-precision building exterior facade corner point (BEFCP) is an essential element in topographic and cadastral surveys. However, current extraction methods rely on the interactions of humans with the 3D real-scene models produced by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) oblique photogrammetry, which have a high workload, low efficiency, poor precision, and cannot satisfy the requirements of automation. The dense point cloud contains discrete 3D building structure information. Still, it is challenging to accurately filter out the partial point cloud characterizing the building structure from it in order to achieve BEFCP extraction. The BEFCPs are always located on the plumb line of the building's exterior wall. Thus, this paper back-calculated the plumb line from the image and designed a photographic ray corresponding to the image point and point cloud intersection point calculation algorithm to recover its approximate spatial position in order to successfully extract the accurate point cloud in the building structure neighborhood. It then utilized the high signal-to-noise ratio property of the point cloud as a base to eliminate the noise points and, finally, accurately located the building exterior façade corner points by recovering the building structure through segmental linear fitting of the point cloud. The proposed algorithm conducted automated building exterior facade corner point extraction via both of planar-to-stereo and rough-to-precise strategies, reached a 92.06% correctness rate and ±4.5 cm point mean square location error in the experiment, and was able to extract and distinguish the building exterior facade corner points under eaves obstruction and extreme proximity. It is suitable for all high-precision surveying and mapping tasks in building areas based on oblique photogrammetry, which can effectively improve the automation of mapping production.

Abstract:This paper brought forward a way based on CAD data and high-resolution remote sensing image to create 3D models of city landscape.This method is used to create 3D models using polygons of the buildings as underside and the number of floors as heights in 2D GIS software.Then it put the models,orthograph and DEM together in a proper way.In a case study of Nanjing Xinjiekou,the results show that the method,which can be widely used in urban GIS-related research,is an economic and efficient urban landscape 3D visualization way.

Abstract:With the rapid development of smart cities, intelligent navigation, and autonomous driving, how to quickly obtain 3D spatial information of urban buildings and build a high-precision 3D fine model has become a key problem to be solved. As the two-dimensional mapping results have constrained various needs in people's social life, coupled with the concept of digital city and advocacy, making three-dimensional, virtualization and actualization become the common pursuit of people's goals. However, the original point cloud obtained is always incomplete due to reasons such as occlusion during acquisition and data density decreasing with distance, resulting in extracted boundaries that are often incomplete as well. In this paper, based on the study of current mainstream 3D model data organization methods, geographic grids and map service specifications, and other related technologies, an intelligent urban 3D modeling model based on multisource data point cloud algorithm is designed for the two problems of unified organization and expression of urban multisource 3D model data. A point cloud preprocessing process is also designed: point cloud noise reduction and downsampling to ensure the original point cloud geometry structure remain unchanged, while improving the point cloud quality and reducing the number of point clouds. By outputting to a common 3D format, the 3D model constructed in this paper can be applied to many fields such as urban planning and design, architectural landscape design, urban management, emergency disaster relief, environmental protection, and virtual tourism.

Abstract:A new method for 3D reconstruction of building rooftop models from LiDAR data and orthophto is proposed. The main contributions of this method include a triangular cluster - based algorithm for rooftop patch segmentation and a strategy to extract ridge lines of rooftop patches by the integration of LiDAR data and orthophoto. The process consists of a consequence of three steps. Firstly, a Delaunay triangular network is constructed from LiDAR data and a triangular cluster - based segmentation is executed to separate rooftop patches from this triangular network. Ridge lines of rooftops are then extracted by overlaying the extracted lines from orthophoto and the segmented rooftop patches. Finally, 3D rooftop models are reconstructed with the segmented rooftop patches and the extracted ridge lines. The experiment demonstrates that this proposed method can construct 3D building rooftop models with high correctness, completeness and geometric accuracy. For the reconstructed 3D rooftop models in test area 1 and 2, the correctness are 86%, 90%, respectively; the completeness are 85%, 88%, respectively; the positioning precision are 0.39m, 0.31m, respectively.
An unsupervised, open-source workflow for 2D and 3D building mapping from airborne LiDAR data

Abstract:Despite the substantial demand for high-quality, large-area building maps, no established open-source workflow for generating 2D and 3D maps currently exists. This study introduces an automated, open-source workflow for large-scale 2D and 3D building mapping utilizing airborne LiDAR data. Uniquely, our workflow operates entirely unsupervised, eliminating the need for any training procedures. We have integrated a specifically tailored DTM generation algorithm into our workflow to prevent errors in complex urban landscapes, especially around highways and overpasses. Through fine rasterization of LiDAR point clouds, we've enhanced building-tree differentiation, reduced errors near water bodies, and augmented computational efficiency by introducing a new planarity calculation. Our workflow offers a practical and scalable solution for the mass production of rasterized 2D and 3D building maps from raw airborne LiDAR data. Also, we elaborate on the influence of parameters and potential error sources to provide users with practical guidance. Our method's robustness has been rigorously optimized and tested using an extensive dataset (> 550 km$^2$), and further validated through comparison with deep learning-based and hand-digitized products. Notably, through these unparalleled, large-scale comparisons, we offer a valuable analysis of large-scale building maps generated via different methodologies, providing insightful evaluations of the effectiveness of each approach. We anticipate that our highly scalable building mapping workflow will facilitate the production of reliable 2D and 3D building maps, fostering advances in large-scale urban analysis. The code will be released upon publication.

Abstract:Sustainable development can only be achieved with an innovative improvement from the way we currently analyze, design, build and manage our urban spaces. Current digital analysis and design methods for cities, such as visibility analysis, deeply rely on mapping and modeling techniques. However, most methods fall short of depicting the real visual landscape in the urban realm and this could bring a significant error in visibility calculations which may lead to an improper decision for urban spaces. The technical development of light detection and ranging(LiDAR) technology introduces new approaches for urban study. LiDAR utilizes point clouds including thousands or even millions of georeferenced points, and thus can support 3-D digital representation of urban landscape with detailed information and high resolution. Besides the superiority in representing urban landscape, LiDAR point clouds also has a clear advantage in quantitative analysis and provides better visibility than traditional models. In this paper, we first introduced a novel approach to map visibility in the urban built environment involving vegetation data directly using airborne LiDAR point clouds. This approach calculates neighborhood statistics for occlusion detection. Then we presented 2 case with different scenarios showing how our approach can be used to obtain a precise visibility in an urban area in the Netherlands. At last, we discussed how point clouds based visibility models can be further explored and can better assist urban design.

Abstract:The well-being of villages and villagers is directly related to the development of urban-rural relations. Rural development is an important part of poverty alleviation, as well as the main goal and means of rural rejuvenation, Because rural planning affects rural economic development and rural revitalization. Electronic imaging can improve the speed of rural area planning, and can also model the planned scheme. However, the current rural planning still lacks top-level design, which cannot improve the overall structural design of rural planning, and the data resources of rural planning are not perfect. Therefore, this paper studied the direction of rural planning and design by analyzing the focus, problems and external environment characteristics of rural planning, and then analyzed the application characteristics in rural planning according to the process of 3D image technology. By reducing the complex design links in rural planning, the office efficiency of planning and the 3D visualization of planning model can be promoted, so as to improve the effect of rural planning and the construction service of rural planning. The simulated annealing algorithm showed that the planning efficiency and average planning speed of 3D image application in rural planning were gradually increasing; the average planning efficiency was about 1.80, and the average planning speed was about 1.05. The planning efficiency increased by 1.20 in the whole process, while the average planning speed increased by 0.33 in the whole process. Through comparison, it can be seen that the planning rationality of rural planning under 3D image was 12.16% higher than the original one, while the measurement error rate of some teachers was 47.28% lower. In a word, 3D imaging and electronic imaging can improve the architectural design and layout planning of rural planning.

Abstract:AbstrcatWe propose an engineering approach to creating 3D models of outdoor scenes from laser range data and visual image data.According to the features of TH-3DLCS-2001 Scanner which can capture the 3D geometry and texture data synchronously,we deduce the formulas of registration between laser points and visual points,and give the RGB values of each laser points.We propose a fast registration algorithm of multiple range images based on the reverse projections,and all range images are aligned into a common coordinate system.Using the Hough Transform and Fuzzy theory,we classify the outdoor scene into six major groups including roof,wall,window,ground,tree,and others,and give a triangulation algorithm.This proposed method has been applied to the 3D reconstruction of some outdoor scenes;the results show that this method can be able to solve the basic problems of 3D reconstruction of outdoor scenes from laser range data and visual image data.

Abstract:Existing approaches have shown that, through carefully planning flight trajectories, images captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be used to reconstruct high-quality 3D models for real environments. These approaches greatly simplify and cut the cost of large-scale urban scene reconstruction. However, to properly capture height discontinuities in urban scenes, all state-of-the-art methods require prior knowledge on scene geometry and hence, additional prepossessing steps are needed before performing the actual image acquisition flights. To address this limitation and to make urban modeling techniques even more accessible, we present a real-time explore-and-reconstruct planning algorithm that does not require any prior knowledge for the scenes. Using only captured 2D images, we estimate 3D bounding boxes for buildings on-the-fly and use them to guide online path planning for both scene exploration and building observation. Experimental results demonstrate that the aerial paths planned by our algorithm in realtime for unknown environments support reconstructing 3D models with comparable qualities and lead to shorter flight air time.

Urban Three-dimensional (3-D) Road Surface Reconstruction Based on a Data Assimilation Algorithm Using a Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) System

Abstract:Urban area three-dimensional (3-D) model reconstruction is one of the major fields of application of 3-D scanning technologies. In the future, vehicle-based laser scanning, here called mobile laser scanning system, should see considerable use for 3-D road environment modelling in urban areas. In this context one of the main limitations perceived by the mobile laser scanning system is the incompleteness or the sampling. Whenever we scan urban area road environment, the produced sampling usually presents a large number of missing regions. Many algorithmic solutions exist to close those gaps from specific hole filling algorithms to the drastic solution of using water-tight reconstruction methods. In this paper, a method for filling holes of road surface point clouds and generating 3-D model of road surface from mobile laser scanning data is developed. The data is classified into road surface, on-road and off-road surface point clouds. Many large holes in the road surface point clouds are filled by using data assimilation algorithm. Then, the road surface is 3-D modelled as a triangulated irregular network. It is shown that the whole road surface 3-D model is integrated after data processing. The above mentioned steps are applied to a large set of mobile laser scanning data of urban area road environment, in order to obtain the whole urban road surface 3-D model.

Abstract:Modeling of urban facades from raw LiDAR point data remains active due to its challenging nature. In this paper, we propose an automatic yet robust 3D modeling approach for urban facades with raw LiDAR point clouds. The key observation is that building facades often exhibit repetitions and regularities. We hereby formulate repetition detection as an energy optimization problem with a global energy function balancing geometric errors, regularity and complexity of facade structures. As a result, repetitive structures are extracted robustly even in the presence of noise and missing data. By registering repetitive structures, missing regions are completed and thus the associated point data of structures are well consolidated. Subsequently, we detect the potential design intents (i.e., geometric constraints) within structures and perform constrained fitting to obtain the precise structure models. Furthermore, we apply structure alignment optimization to enforce position regularities and employ repetitions to infer missing structures. We demonstrate how the quality of raw LiDAR data can be improved by exploiting data redundancy, and discovering high level structural information (regularity and symmetry). We evaluate our modeling method on a variety of raw LiDAR scans to verify its robustness and effectiveness.
3D Building Reconstruction from Lidar Data Based on Delaunay Tin Approach

Abstract:With a great progress in the research on digital city and related commercial applications, the construction of 3D city models has been matured gradually as a research topic in recent years. When constructing 3D city models on large scale, it is inevitable to have available reconstruction tools that offer a high level of automation and produce valid models reliably within the required accuracy. In this paper, a new method for the automatic generation of 3D building models from directly observed point cloud captured by airborne LiDAR system is presented. At first, Delaunay TIN model is constructed based on the building points. Then an edge length ratio based trace algorithm is used for refining the building's boundary. And the extracted outlines are regularized applying the regression analysis to obtain the better geometric quality. Then the same plane points set are clustered via those points in a triangle facet having the similar normal vector value, which determines the roof structures. Finally, with the regular outlines and roof structures information, the building models are constructed. The data in the study area provided by www.terrasolid.fi are used to test the approach. The experimental results show that this proposed approach is able to construct building models effectively.
