The essential ingredient characterizing the electronic properties is the bilayer NiO_{2} planes coupled by the interlayer bonding of 3d_{z^{2}} orbitals through the intermediate oxygen atoms. In the strong coupling limit, the low-energy physics is described by an intralayer antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction J_{∥} between 3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} orbitals and an interlayer one J_{⊥} between 3d_{z^{2}} orbitals. Taking into account Hund's rule on each site and integrating out the 3d_{z^{2}} spin degree of freedom, the system reduces to a single-orbital bilayer t-J model based on the 3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} orbital. By employing the slave-boson approach, the self-consistent equations for the bonding and pairing order parameters are solved. Near the physically relevant 1/4-filling regime (doping δ=0.3∼0.5), the interlayer coupling J_{⊥} tunes the conventional single-layer d-wave superconducting state to the s-wave one. A strong J_{⊥} could enhance the interlayer superconducting order, leading to a dramatically increased T_{c}. Interestingly, there could exist a finite regime in which an s+id state emerges.

Abstract:Prompted by the recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, this study delves into a theoretical investigation of spin excitations within this intriguing material. Employing self-consistent mean-field calculations, we find that superconductivity in this compound is predominantly governed by interlayer pairing mechanisms. In the superconducting state, our analysis uncovers a notable absence of a spin resonance mode, a finding that deviates from conventional expectations. Furthermore, we reveal a spectrum of energy-dependent incommensurate spin excitations. The observed incommensurate structures are elegantly explained by the nesting effect of energy contours, providing a coherent and comprehensive account of experimental observations. The implications of these spin excitations in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are profound, offering critical insights into the superconducting mechanism at play. Our results not only contribute to the understanding of this novel superconductor but also pave the way for further research into the interplay between spin dynamics and unconventional superconductivity in layered materials.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity with a critical temperature of about 80 K in La3Ni2O7 single crystals under pressure has received enormous attention. La3Ni2O7 is not superconducting under ambient pressure but exhibits a transition at T ∗ ≃ 115 K. Understanding the electronic correlations and charge dynamics is an important step towards the origin of superconductivity and other instabilities. Here, our optical study shows that La3Ni2O7 features strong electronic correlations which significantly reduce the electron’s kinetic energy and place this system in the proximity of the Mott phase. The low-frequency optical conductivity reveals two Drude components arising from multiple bands at the Fermi level. The transition at T ∗ removes the Drude component exhibiting non-Fermi liquid behavior, whereas the one with Fermi-liquid behavior is barely affected. These observations in combination with theoretical results suggest that the Fermi surface dominated by the Ni- $${d}_{3{z}^{2}-{r}^{2}}$$ orbital is removed due to the transition at T ∗. Our experimental results provide pivotal information for understanding the transition at T ∗ and superconductivity in La3Ni2O7. The bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O7 was recently shown to be superconducting at high-pressure. Here the authors reveal strong electronic correlations and the opening of a partial gap, providing key information for understanding the nature of the density-wavelike transition at ambient pressure and superconductivity in this compound.

Abstract:We clarify the pairing mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure by employing the static auxiliary field Monte Carlo approach to simulate a minimal effective model that contains local $d_{z^2}$ interlayer spin singlets and metallic $d_{x^2-y^2}$ bands. Superconductivity is induced when the local spin singlet pairs are mobilized and attain long-distance phase coherence by hybridization with the metallic bands. When projected onto realistic Fermi surfaces, it yields a nodeless $s$-wave gap on the $\gamma$ Fermi surface, and extended $s$-wave gaps of the same (opposite) sign on the $\alpha$ ($\beta$) Fermi surface due to its bonding (antibonding) character, with nodes or gap minima along the diagonal direction of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We find a dual role of the hybridization that not only induces global phase coherence but also competes with the spin singlet formation. This lead to a tentative phase diagram where $T_c$ varies nonmonotonically with the hybridization, in good correspondence with experimental observations. A roughly linear relation is obtained for realistic hopping and hybridization parameters: $T_c\approx 0.04-0.05 J$, where $J$ is the interlayer superexchange interaction. We emphasize the peculiar tunability of the bilayer structure and propose that $T_c$ may be further enhanced by hole doping or applying uniaxial pressure along the $c$ axis on superconducting La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Our work provides reliable numerical evidence for the pairing mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and points out a potential route to achieve even higher $T_c$.

Effective model and pairing tendency in bilayer Ni-based superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

Abstract:Since the discovery of cuprate, the origin of high-T$_c$ superconductivity has been an outstanding puzzle. Recently, high-T$_c$ superconductivity was observed in a bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, whose structure hosts the apical oxygen between two layers, distinct from multi-layer cuprates. Motivated by this discovery, we investigate its electronic structure using first-principle calculations and superconducting instabilities from both weak-coupling and strong-coupling perspective. Based on the first-principle band structures, we construct a bilayer two-orbital model on a square lattice, consisting of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{z^2}$ orbitals, which accurately captures the low-energy electronic properties. Within this model, we study pairing instability using both functional renormalization group approach and multi-orbital t-J model. An $s_{\pm}$-wave pairing with sign-reversal gaps on different Fermi surfaces is revealed, reminiscent of iron based superconductors. The Ni-$d_{z^2}$ orbital and its associated interlayer and intralayer exchange couplings are found to be crucial for the high-T$_c$ superconductivity. Our study provides valuable insights into unique nature of electronic structure and superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and contributes to the understanding of unconventional superconductors.

Abstract:The recently discovered high-T$_C$ superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has sparked renewed interest in the unconventional superconductivity. Here we study superconductivity in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ based on a bilayer two-orbital $t-J$ model, using the renormalized mean-field theory. Our results reveal a robust $s^\pm-$wave pairing driven by the inter-layer $d_{z^2}$ magnetic coupling, which exhibits a transition temperature within the same order of magnitude as the experimentally observed $T_c \sim 80$ K. We establish a comprehensive superconducting phase diagram in the doping plane. Notably, the La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure is found situated roughly in the optimal doping regime of the phase diagram. When the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital becomes close to half-filling, $d-$wave and $d+is$ pairing can emerge from the system. We discuss the interplay between Fermi surface topology and different pairing symmetries. The stability of the $s^\pm-$wave pairing against Hund's coupling and other magnetic exchange couplings is discussed.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity at 80 K under high pressure in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ presents the groundbreaking confirmation that high-$T_c$ superconductivity is a property of strongly correlated materials beyond cuprates. We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the band structure of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure to verify that the low-energy bands are composed almost exclusively of Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O 2$p$ orbitals. We deduce that the Ni 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals are essentially decoupled by the geometry of the high-pressure structure and by the effect of the Ni Hund coupling being strongly suppressed, which results from the enhanced interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction between $d_{z^2}$ orbitals and the strong intralayer hybridization of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals with O 2$p$. By introducing a tight-binding model for the Fermi surfaces and low-energy dispersions, we arrive at a bilayer $t$-$t_\perp$-$J$ model with strong interlayer hopping, which we show is a framework unifying La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with cuprate materials possessing similar band structures, particularly the compounds La$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_6$, Pb$_2$Sr$_2$YCu$_3$O$_8$, and EuSr$_2$Cu$_2$NbO$_8$. We use a renormalized mean-field theory to show that these systems should have ($d$+$is$)-wave superconductivity, with a dominant $d$-wave component and the high $T_c$ driven by the near-optimally doped $\beta$ band, while the $\alpha$ band adds an $s$-wave component that should lead to clear experimental signatures.

Abstract:Motivated by the report of superconductivity in bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at high pressure, we examine the interacting electrons in this system. First-principles many-body theory is utilized to study the normal-state electronic properties. Below 100\,K, a multi-orbital non-Fermi liquid state resulting from loss of Ni-ligand coherence within a flat-band dominated low-energy landscape is uncovered. The incoherent low-temperature Fermi surface displays strong mixing between Ni-$d_{z^2}$ and Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character. In a model-Hamiltonian picture, spin fluctuations originating mostly from the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ orbital give rise to strong tendencies towards a superconducting instability with $B_{1g}$ or $B_{2g}$ order parameter. The dramatic enhancement of $T_{\rm c}$ in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ is due to stronger Ni-$d_{z^2}$ correlations compared to those in the infinite-layer nickelates.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent rapid progress in high-$T_c$ nickelate superconductors, we comprehensively study the physical properties of the alternating bilayer trilayer stacking nickelate La$_7$Ni$_5$O$_{17}$. The high-symmetry phase of this material, without the tilting of oxygen octahedra, is not stable at ambient conditions but becomes stable under high pressure, where a small hole pocket $\gamma_0$, composed of the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ states in the trilayer sublattice, appears. This pocket was identified in our previous work for trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ as important to develop superconductivity. Moreover, using random-phase approximation calculations, we find a leading $s^\pm$ pairing state for the high-symmetry phase under pressure with similar pairing strength as that obtained previously for the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ compound, suggesting a similar or higher superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. In addition, we find that the dominant magnetic fluctuations in the system driving this pairing state have antiferromagnetic structure both in-plane and between the planes of the top and bottom trilayer and bilayer sublattices, while the middle trilayer is magnetically decoupled.

Understanding the electronic correlations and charge dynamics is an important step towards the origin of superconductivity and other instabilities. Here, our optical study shows that La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ features strong electronic correlations which significantly reduce the electron's kinetic energy and place this system in the proximity of the Mott phase. The low-frequency optical conductivity reveals two Drude components arising from multiple bands at the Fermi level. The transition at $T^{\ast}$ removes the Drude component exhibiting non-Fermi liquid behavior, whereas the one with Fermi-liquid behavior is barely affected. These observations in combination with theoretical results suggest that the Fermi surface dominated by the Ni-$d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ orbital is removed due to the transition at $T^{\ast}$. Our experimental results provide pivotal information for understanding the transition at $T^{\ast}$ and superconductivity in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Abstract:Beyond 14GPa of pressure, bi-layered La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ was recently found to develop strong superconductivity above the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature. An immediate essential question is the pressure-induced qualitative change of electronic structure that enables the exciting high-temperature superconductivity. We investigate this timely question via a numerical multi-scale derivation of effective many-body physics. At the atomic scale, we first clarify that the system has a strong charge transfer nature with itinerant carriers residing mainly in the in-plane oxygen between spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$ ions. We then elucidate in eV- and sub-eV-scale the key physical effect of the applied pressure: It induces a cupratelike electronic structure through partially screening the Ni spin from 1 to 1/2. This suggests a high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with microscopic mechanism and ($d$-wave) symmetry similar to that in the cuprates.

Abstract:With recent discoveries of superconductivity in infinite--layer nickelates, and in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under high pressure, new opportunities appeared that yet another family of high--temperature superconductors based on Ni element may exist in Nature as was previously the case of cuprates and iron based materials. With their famous strong Coulomb correlations among 3d electrons and the proximity to antiferromagnetic instability these systems represent a challenge for their theoretical description, and most previous studies of superconductivity relied on the solutions of simplified few--orbital model Hamiltonians. Here, on the other hand, we use a recently developed combination of density functional theory with momentum and frequency resolved self--energies deduced from the so--called Fluctuational--Exchange (FLEX)--type Random Phase Approximation (RPA) to study spin fluctuation mediated pairing tendencies in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under pressure. This methodology uses first--principle electronic structures of an actual material and is free of tight--binding parametrizations employed in model Hamiltonian approach. Based on our numerical diagonalization of the BCS Gap equation we show that competing d$_{xy}$ and s$_{\pm }$ pairing symmetries emerge in superconducting La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$% _{7}$ with the corresponding coupling constants becoming large in the proximity of spin density wave instability. The results presented here are discussed in light of numerous other calculations and provide on--going experimental efforts with predictions that will allow further tests of our understanding of unconventional superconductors.
