Abstract:The inherently intermittent feature of solar energy requires reliable energy conversion and storage systems for utilizing the most abundant solar energy. Phase change materials are potential solutions to store a large amount of heat produced by solar light. However, few of the phase change materials have the ability to efficiently convert solar energy into heat; additionally, phase change materials need to be encapsulated in porous substrates for enhancing their leaking resistance and photo-to-thermal performance. In this work, monolithic MXene aerogels, fabricated by Al3+ cross-linking and freeze-drying, were used as the encapsulation and photothermal materials. The composites phase change materials of MXene/polyethylene glycol can be made with a large polyethylene glycol loading above 90 wt% with the maximum of 97 wt%, owing to the large porosity of MXene aerogels. The low content of MXene has a limited impact on the phase transition temperature and enthalpy of polyethylene glycol, with an enthalpy retention rate ranging from 89.2 to 96.5% for 90-97 wt% polyethylene glycol loadings. MXene aerogels greatly improve the leaking resistance of polyethylene glycol above its melting point of 60 °C, even at 100 °C. The composites phase change materials also show outstanding cycling stability for 500 cycles of heat storage and release, retaining 97.7% of the heat storage capability. The optimized composite phase change material has a solar energy utilization of 93.5%, being superior to most of the reported results. Our strategy produces promising composite phase change materials for solar energy utilization using the MXene aerogels as the encapsulation and photothermal materials.

Abstract:We devised a functional form-stable composite phase-change materials (PCMs) to achieve a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous carbon aerogel structure for encapsulating polyethylene glycol (PEG). A novel homogeneity reinforced carbon aerogel with a well-interconnected porous structure was constructed by combining a flexible carbon resource from biomass guar gum with hard brittle carbon from polyimide, to overcome severe shrinkage and poor mechanical performance of traditional carbon aerogel. The supporting carbon aerogel encapsulated PEG produced the novel composite PCMs with good structure stability and comprehensive energy-storage performance. The results showed that the composite PCMs displayed a well-defined 3D interconnected structure, and their energy-storage capacities were 171.5 J/g and 169.5 J/g, which changed only slightly after 100 thermal cycles, and the composites could maintain the equilibrium temperature at 50.0 °C-58.1 °C for about 760.3 s. The thermal conductivity of the composites could reach 0.62 W m-1 K-1, which effectively enhanced the thermal response rate. And the composite PCMs exhibited good leakage-proof performance and excellent light-thermal conversion. The compressive strength of the composite PCMs can improve up to 1.602 MPa. Results indicate that this strategy can be efficiently used to develop novel composite PCMs with improved comprehensive thermal performance and high light-thermal conversion.

Abstract:Accelerate the development of medium-temperature phase change materials (PCMs) with high enthalpy of phase change and light absorption capability is very important for medium-temperature energy storage and solar thermal utilization. However, low energy conversion capacity and easy leakage limit the practical application of PCMs. To improve these properties of materials, a MXene/DM aerogel composite phase change material was prepared by self-assembly followed by freeze-drying of d -mannitol (DM) and MXene nanosheets using a simple solution blending method. The MXene/DM containing 20 wt% MXene has a high enthalpy (H m ) of phase change (202.7 J/g) with phase change temperature (T m ) of 153.3 °C, and still has good shape stability at 170 °C without leakage. In addition, MXene/DM has strong absorption ability in UV–Vis-NIR regions, with significant solar-thermal conversion efficiency of 88.1 %. The results indicate that the MXene/DM aerogel have comprehensive performance and have promising applications in medium-temperature thermal storage and photothermal conversion.

Abstract:Photothermal energy conversion and storage though phase change materials (PCMs) composites is one of the ideal methods for the efficient utilization of solar energy which is regarded as the cleanest and most sustainable renewable energy. Herein, a series of Ti3C2-introduced PCMs composites were developed by melt-dipping method exploiting MXene/sodium alginate/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrid aerogels as supporting materials and tetradecylamine (TDA) as the impregnated PCM. The utilization of MXene is to enhance the light absorption performance of PCM composites which has significantly improved their absorbance under an extremely high loading rate exceeding 91.0 wt%. This result contributed to a high photothermal energy conversion efficiency up to 84.95% and an excellent thermal energy storage density with a relatively high latent heat up to 217.8 kJ/kg. Notably, the hybrid TDA/aerogel composites also exhibited remarkable cycling and crystallinity stability; their melting enthalpy still maintain up to 192.0 kJ/kg after 300th thermal and cooling cycles. Additionally, the obtained PCM composites also possess marvelous mechanical property and enhanced thermal conductivity. The excellent comprehensive performance demonstrated that the resultant composites show great potential application in solar energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:In this study, novel tetradecylamine/MXene/cellulose nanocrystal composite phase change materials (TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs) were prepared using a vacuum impregnation method. For the first time, lightweight MXene/CNC composite aerogel was employed as a support material in energy storage, with TDA serving as the phase change material. The latent heat of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs reached 221.5 J/g. Furthermore, the density of the MXene/CNC-2 composite aerogel was 0.0614 g/cm3, and its loading rate for TDA was as high as 90.6 wt%. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCM-5 was 0.491 W/(m·K), 1.87 times higher than that of pure TDA. The TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs exhibited exceptional thermal stability up to 120 °C and maintained excellent shape stability at 60 °C. The composites exhibit a superior solar-thermal conversion ability with the conversion efficiency as high as 94.1%, The incorporation of MXene significantly enhances the photothermal conversion capability, providing an important avenue for the high-efficiency utilisation of solar energy.

Abstract:In this study, a green, non-toxic, and renewable starch was selected to construct a three-dimensional (3D) biomass-derived aerogel to prepare a series of shape stable phase change composites (SSPCCs) by encapsulating organic phase change materials (PCMs), and the best encapsulation effect of SF-50 with ultralow density (0.0635 g/cm −3 ) and high continuous porosity on polyethylene glycol (PEG) was found to be 91.78 wt% by comparing myristic acid (MA) and paraffin wax (PW). Moreover, the introduction of MXene, a functional two-dimensional filler in the aerogel skeleton, not only endows the SSPCCs with better light absorption ability, but also enhances the encapsulation ability of PEG. The adsorption rate of SF-Mxene-8 on PEG is 93.27 wt% and the enthalpy is 164.92 J/g. In addition, its photothermal conversion rate is 76.9 % and it still has stable solar energy absorption and thermal energy release ability after 200 photothermal conversions. The starch based aerogel in general will bring a new paradigm for PCM as a working medium for solar-thermal energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have emerged as the most efficient thermal energy storage solutions due to their unique energy storage properties, but they inevitably have shortcomings such as easy leakage and single thermal energy conversion method. In order to solve these problems and expand the application scope of PCMs in the field of thermal energy storage, using cellulose nanofibers, MXene, PEG, and Fe3O4 as raw materials, combined with simple freeze-drying and vacuum impregnation techniques, a series of phase change composites (PCCs) with excellent solar/magnetothermal conversion properties were prepared. The solar-to-thermal conversion efficiencies of PCCs exceed 97.16%, and the lowest enthalpy value can still reach 151 J/g. When the content of Fe3O4 is 15%, the PCC exhibits good magnetothermal conversion ability, which can perform magnetothermal fast charging, and the PCC can rise from 17 °C to 85 °C in 130 s. Moreover, the PCCs have excellent thermal stability, which can remain stable below 350 °C, and the enthalpies value of the PCCs hardly decrease after 1000 cycles, showing great practical application value.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) composites are of great importance for a wide range of applications in energy conversion and storage, waste heat recovery and utilization, thermal energy management in building, electronic devices cooling and heat insulation, etc. Herein, a novel strategy for the fabrication of PCM composites for solar/electro energy conversion and storage is reported. The polypyrrole (PPy) coated conjugated microporous polymers/expanded graphene (EG) carbon aerogels/HDA (PCMPECAs/HDA) composites were firstly obtained via Sonogashira–Hagihara cross-coupling reaction followed by a carbonization treatment, PPy coating and finally 1-Hexadecylamine (HDA) impregnation. The introduction of EG and PPy was to improve the porosity, thermal conductivity and photothermal performance. The resultant PCMPECAs/HDA composites exhibited excellent comprehensive performances, including relatively high thermal conductivity of up to 234.0% that of HDA, high energy storage density up to 205.10 kJ/kg, excellent shape and thermal stability and a remarkable photothermal conversion and storage efficiency of up to 93.5%, respectively. And after 300 times thermal and cooling cycles, the latent heat of PCMPECAs/HDA still remains up to 150.20 kJ/kg. Besides, the resultant composites also manifest excellent electro-thermal effect at low voltage. Due to the aforementioned advantages, PCMPECAs/HDA composites possess great potential applications in solar/electric energy conversion and storage.

Novel MoS2/montmorillonite hybrid aerogel encapsulated PEG as composite phase change materials with superior solar-thermal energy harvesting and storage

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) offer significant advantages in energy conversion and storage by facilitating the storage and release of thermal energy during phase transition processes. However, challenges such as leakage during PCM phase transitions and poor light absorption properties have constrained their application in the field of photothermal energy storage. In this study, Montmorillonite (Mt) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been used to design and synthesize hybrid aerogels (MoS2/Mt) boasting high mechanical strength and excellent photothermal conversion performance. These aerogels are then used to encapsulate polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prepare composite PCMs with outstanding solar-thermal conversion and storage performances. The results show that the synthesized MoS2/Mt-PEG composite PCMs exhibit high enthalpies of melting and solidification of 169.16 J/g and 170.78 J/g, respectively, while the aerogel supporting material has a high compressive modulus of 1.96 MPa. Moreover, the composite material displayed excellent thermal stability and leakage resistance after undergoing 30 melting-cooling cycles. Furthermore, the incorporation of MoS2 imparted outstanding light absorption properties to the MoS2/Mt-PEG composite, resulting in a high light absorption and photothermal conversion-storage efficiency of 93.4 % and 96.47 %, respectively. Synthesized composite PCMs also demonstrate outstanding performance in solar-thermal-electricity conversion, achieving a voltage output of 458 mV under illumination conditions and maintaining a sustainable voltage output even after removing the light source. Thus, the composite PCMs prepared in this work can meet the requirements of high enthalpy, effective leakage prevention, efficient solar-thermal conversion and solar-thermal-electricity conversion performance, thereby presenting potential applications in practical solar energy collection, conversion, and storage.

Abstract:The design of shape stable phase change materials (PCMs) with efficient solar energy conversion performance provides a new direction for the large-scale application of organic PCMs in sustainable energy utilization. Herein, a facile and ingenious one-step strategy was proposed to fabricate shape stable phase change aerogel, in which in-situ cross-linked gelatin/cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogel was severed as mechanically strong framework to encapsulate PEG, and CMK-3 contributed to enhance the light-thermal conversion capability of phase change aerogel. The resultant gelatin/CNC/CMK-3/PEG (GCCA/PEG) possessed a high melting and crystallization enthalpy of 123.0 and 118.6 J g −1 , exceptional thermal reliability over 100 thermal cycles, excellent anti-leakage capability, as well as long-lasting and extraordinary shape stability at operating temperature. Exhilaratingly, the GCCA/PEG could realize efficient light-thermal conversion and the light-thermal energy conversion efficiency could reach up to 89 % in simulated sunlight irradiation. Overall, the developed biomass-based phase change aerogel with such commendable comprehensive performance presented broad application prospects in solar thermal utilization and renewable thermal energy storage systems.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) possess notable advantages in the realm of energy conversion and storage due to their capacity to absorb and release thermal energy, high energy density, and consistent phase change temperature. Nevertheless, several drawbacks, including the issue of leakage during solid–liquid phase transition, inadequate solar absorption capabilities, and low thermal and electrical conductivity, limit the advancement of PCMs. Although substantial efforts have been directed toward constructing composite PCMs based on three-dimensional (3D) carriers, their practical application in energy conversion necessitates further investigation. In this study, we have successfully fabricated a lightweight composite PCM without liquid phase leakage for addressing the requirements for high enthalpy and solar-thermal energy conversion and storage. By utilizing a combination of melamine foam (MF), graphene nanoplatelets (GNP), and carbon nanotubes (CNT) as the supporting framework, along with octadecane as the core PCM, we have achieved composite PCMs with a loading amount of only 85.8% that exhibit a comparable phase transition enthalpy to that of pure octadecane. Furthermore, the composite PCMs exhibit minimal alterations in thermal performance even after undergoing 350 simulated hot and cold cycles. Additionally, the composites exhibit exceptional abilities in solar-thermal conversion and electrothermal conversion, with photothermal conversion efficiency surpassing 95%. Consequently, the composite PCMs developed in this study demonstrate significant potential for applications in thermal energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:To address the problems of easy leakage and high flammability of phase change materials, a series of innovative leakage-proof phase change composites (PCCs) with excellent solar thermal conversion capability and superior flame retardancy have been successfully developed. Herein, two-dimensional layered MXene nanosheets with excellent solar-thermal conversion effect were first synthesized by etching MAX phase with lithium fluoride and hydrochloric acid solutions. MXene/polyimide (PI) aerogel was then prepared by freeze-drying and thermal imidization after MXene dispersions mixed with poly (amic acid). The MXene/PI aerogels were subsequently impregnated into polyethylene glycol (PEG) by vacuum impregnation to obtain new shape-stable MXene/PI@PEG phase change composites (MPPCCs). Among them, MPPCC-4 exhibits a very high PEG loading capacity (98.1%) and high enthalpy (167.9 J/g), and a relative enthalpy efficiency of 99.8%. When compared to PEG, MPPCC-4 has outstanding flame retardant properties, including a 26.2% lower peak heat release rate and an 11.6% lower total heat release rate. Abstract:Organic phase change materials (PCMs) based latent heat energy storage and release media are promising candidate for the utilization of thermal energy from the solar irradiation. However, the poor photo-absorption ability and intrinsic poor thermal conductivity of organic PCMs results in leakage problem and slow thermal energy charging/discharging rates, which makes them unable to utilize directly for thermal energy conversion. Herein, we fabricate a three-dimensional (3D) carboxymethylcellulose sodium-derived carbon aerogel (CCA) and organic PCM composite with highly efficient light-thermal-electric energy conversion and storage capability. The porous and interconnected CCA15 is prepared firstly through crosslinking, freeze-drying and pyrolysis of carboxymethylcellulose sodium-based hydrogel. The organic PCM of polyethylene glycol (PEG) is then impregnated into the porous CCA15 via vacuum infiltration technique to obtain the PEG/CCA15 composite that had good form-stability, fusion enthalpy at 185.3 J/g, thermal conductivity at 0.351 W/m·K, and reasonable light-thermal energy conversion efficiency of 71.5% under solar irradiation with intensity of 215 mW/cm 2 . Further results proved that the PEG/CCA15 composite exhibited light-electric energy transformation, storage, and release abilities. The stored thermal energy in the PEG/CCA15 composite absorbed from irradiated solar light could release to power an electronic fan to rotate continuously for 5 min when the solar light was turned off. Hence, the PEG/CCA15 composite has great potential for sustainable solar energy utilization.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have high energy storage density and stable phase transition temperature, and are one of the most promising thermal storage and management materials. However, the PCMs’ shape instability, poor light absorption, low electrical and thermal conductivity seriously hinder their multi-functional application. Herein, a three-dimensional carbon aerogel with grid structure, large porosity, and hierarchical porous structure was prepared from resource-rich plant straw for supporting PCMs. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as thermal energy guest was encapsulated into carbon aerogel by simple vacuum impregnation. The obtained PEG/carbon aerogel composites show high loading rate of PCMs(>97%), high thermal storage density (>185 J g−1), stable shape, and effective solar/electro-thermal conversion. The grid structure carbon aerogel as efficient thermal and electron transfer pathways guarantee effective solar/electro-thermal conversion of composites. PEG encapsulated in each lattice as a thermal functional unit realizes the thermal storage and management. Especially, grid-structure composites realized fast and uniform electro-thermal conversion and storage under low voltage. This work provides a feasible, economic, and large-scale preparation strategy for the multi-functional PCMs. The multi-functional composites have broad application prospects in solar energy capture and storage, waste power recycling, building energy saving, smart thermal management and so on.

Abstract:For the drawbacks of phase change materials such as poor shape stability and weak solar‐thermal conversion ability, a rotunda‐shaped carboxymethylcellulose/carbon nanotube aerogel (CA) with three‐dimensional network was constructed by freeze casting with a special mold, and then impregnated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) in this work. The PEG/CA had an enthalpy of 183.21 J/g, and a thermal conductivity of 0.324 W•m‐1K‐1, which was 57% higher than the pure PEG. The ability of PEG/CA to convert solar energy to thermal energy was a positive correlation between the inclusion of CNTs and the composite material's thermal conductivity. Under simulated sunlight, its solar‐thermal conversion efficiency reaches 94.41%, and after 10 min of irradiation, the surface temperature can reach 65 °C and the internal temperature can reach 44.67 °C. This rotunda‐shaped PEG/CA is promising for the efficient use of renewable solar energy due to its strong solar‐thermal conversion and thermal storage capabilities.

Abstract:Solar energy is the cleanest and most abundant renewable energy source that can be utilized to displace fossil fuels and provide an effective solution for future energy shortage and climate change. Aiming at enhancing the capture efficiency of solar photothermal energy, we developed a novel type of phase-change composites based on polyimide (PI)/phosphorene (PR) hybrid aerogel and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The composites were prepared by fabricating a series of PI/PR hybrid aerogels with different loadings of PR nanosheets using freeze-drying and thermal imidization techniques, followed by vacuum impregnation of PEG as a phase change material into the aerogel framework. The obtained hybrid aerogels exhibited a lightweight nature with a density of 21.9 mg·cm−3 when 16 wt% PR nanosheets were incorporated, resulting in an extremely high PEG loading of 4067% in the aerogel system. The combination of PI and PR nanosheets leads to a significant enhancement in solar light absorption and photothermal energy conversion for the hybrid aerogel/PEG composites. The loading amount of PEG was also improved remarkably due to an increase in the volume capacity of the hybrid aerogels resulting from the introduction of PR nanosheets. The resultant hybrid aerogel/PEG composites not only exhibit a high latent-heat capacity of over 170 J·g−1 and a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 82.5%, but also show good thermal impact resistance to keep their original shape and form well after heating at 80 °C for 20 min and maintain a high thermal cycle stability after thermally cycled for 500 times. These superior performances make the hybrid aerogel/PEG composites capable of dealing with a wide range of applications in solar photothermal energy capture and storage. This study provides a promising strategy for the design and development of high-performance and lightweight composite PCMs to meet the requirement of applications for efficient utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Energy shortage, environmental and ecological issues have prompted a focus on effective solar energy utilization. Using composite phase change materials (PCMs) as an energy storage medium is an important method to achieve efficient solar energy conversion. Biomass materials are highly desirable for solar applications due to their wide range of sources, low cost, environment-friendly, and natural porous structure. In this study, cellulose is selected as a carbon source precursor. Three-dimensional (3D) directional cellulose-based carbon aerogels (CBCA) are constructed through an immersion expansion, orientation, freeze-drying, and carbonization process. Taking tert-butanol/ deionized water as co-solvent, the aerogel shows high specific surface and productivity as well as low structural shrinkage. 3D directional graphitized porous network and graphene guarantee excellent broadband absorption, efficient heat transfer pathways, and effective thermal storage ability. Stearic acid (SA) and graphene are melt blending, followed by a vacuum-impregnating process for the formation of 3D composite PCMs. The thermal storage capability of PCMs is greater than 96%, accompanied by the highest thermal conductivity of 1.17 W/(m·K) with 0.5 wt% graphene. Moreover, the highest light-thermal conversion efficiency can reach 90.3%. It also has a maximum light-thermal-electric energy conversion output power of 1.80 mW. This work provides a feasible, economical strategy for highly efficient solar energy storage and thermal energy utilization.

Abstract:Thermal energy harvesting and storage with phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted extensive exploration in solar-thermal utilization. Solving leakage issue of PCMs and improving the energy absorption, storage and transport are facing great challenges. As a typical aerogel with porous structure and strong light absorption, carbon aerogel (CA) becomes an attractive support material for PCMs. In this work, the carbon aerogels reinforced melamine foam (CA/Foam) were prepared by sol-gel polymerization, freeze drying and carbonization. To further optimize the pore structure and optical properties, CO2 activation is implemented to obtain the super black reinforced melamine foam, which is named as activated CA/Foam (ACA/Foam). After vacuum adsorption of PW, the prepared paraffin wax/activated carbon aerogel/foam (PW/ACA/Foam) maintains high thermal storage density of 143.4 J/g and shows excellent thermal stability, which can effectively solve the shortcoming of PCMs leakage due to rich pore structure. Encouragingly, the photothermal conversion efficiency of PW/ACA/Foam composite material can reach 92.1% with 5% weight fraction of resorcinol and formaldehyde in the precursor solution. The thermal conductivity of PW/ACA/Foam is 0.71 W/(m·K), 97.2% higher than pure PW, which will be the potential material for composite PCMs applied in solar energy utilization.

Abstract:Latent heat storage of phase change materials (PCMs) is expected to be a suitable method to enhance the absorption and conversion of solar energy because of their high heat storage density and excellent chemical stability. However, pure organic PCMs are limited by their low thermal conductivity, photothermal conversion, and thermal energy storage efficiency in practical applications. Herein, vertically oriented network composite PCMs are synthesized using reduced graphene oxide/MXene hybrid aerogels (rGO/MXene) as carrier materials and encapsulating stearic acid (SA) as the PCM. Because of the vertically aligned MXene and rGO hybridized backbones, the thermal conductivity of the composite reaches 1.21 W/(mK), which increases 317.24%, compared to SA. The melting enthalpy of composites reaches 168.25 J/g, which almost retains the melting enthalpy of pure SA. The addition of rGO and MXene significantly improves the photothermal conversion capability of composite PCMs (≤90.19%). Irradiating the oriented and non-oriented surfaces of the composite sample, it is found that the temperature rise is faster in the orientation direction than in the non-oriented direction, and the equilibrium temperature of the orientation direction is 4.8°C higher than that of the non-orientation direction. This new material has a high potential for use in solar energy storage applications because of its excellent performance.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have aroused significant interest as promising materials for solar thermal energy conversion and storage. However, the long-standing shortcomings of liquid leakage, low thermal conductivity , and weak solar absorptance limit their practical applications. Herein, novel composite phase change materials (CPCMs) with anisotropic heat conduction are manufactured by mixing continuous carbon fibers (CFs) and palmitic acid (PA)/olefin block copolymer (OBC) mixtures using pressure induction and vacuum treatment. Because the oriented CFs in the vertical direction can offer heat transfer channels inside the composites, the vertical and horizontal thermal conductivities of the CPCMs are 5.84 W·K −1 ·m −1 and 1.34 W·K −1 ·m −1 , respectively, resulting in a relatively high anisotropic degree of 4.36. Furthermore, to improve the absorption of solar radiation for the composite, carbon black is applied to the upper surface of the CPCMs, achieving a high total solar absorptance of 0.966. Due to the combination of the high solar absorptance of the carbon black and the high vertical thermal conductivity within the composites, the CPCMs exhibit outstanding solar-to-thermal efficiencies of 87.54% ∼ 95.08% at 1– 3 kW·m −2 . In addition, stability testing also confirms that the CPCMs have excellent leakage-proof properties, thermal stability, and cyclic stability for long-term utilization. This work can provide an efficient route to synthesize high-performance CPCMs for solar thermal applications.
