Abstract:Natural language processing (NLP) has been studied in computing for decades. Recent technological advancements have led to the development of sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models, such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT). These models can perform a range of language tasks and generate human-like responses, which offers exciting prospects for academic efficiency. This manuscript aims at (i) exploring the potential benefits and threats of ChatGPT and other NLP technologies in academic writing and research publications; (ii) highlights the ethical considerations involved in using these tools, and (iii) consider the impact they may have on the authenticity and credibility of academic work. This study involved a literature review of relevant scholarly articles published in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus as quartile 1. The search used keywords such as "ChatGPT," "AI-generated text," "academic writing," and "natural language processing." The analysis was carried out using a quasi-qualitative approach, which involved reading and critically evaluating the sources and identifying relevant data to support the research questions. The study found that ChatGPT and other NLP technologies have the potential to enhance academic writing and research efficiency. However, their use also raises concerns about the impact on the authenticity and credibility of academic work. The study highlights the need for comprehensive discussions on the potential use, threats, and limitations of these tools, emphasizing the importance of ethical and academic principles, with human intelligence and critical thinking at the forefront of the research process. This study highlights the need for comprehensive debates and ethical considerations involved in their use. The study also recommends that academics exercise caution when using these tools and ensure transparency in their use, emphasizing the importance of human intelligence and critical thinking in academic work.

Et Machina: Exploring the Use of Conversational Agents Such as ChatGPT in Scientific Writing

Abstract:Background: Advancements in natural language processing have led to the development of powerful language models like ChatGPT, capable of generating coherent text with minimal human input. While the potential for using ChatGPT in scientific paper writing is of growing interest, its full potential and usefulness remain unexplored. Method: We investigated the use of ChatGPT to write scientific papers on the topic of conversational agents in scientific writing. ChatGPT served as a tool to facilitate scientific writing, and we evaluated the quality, factuality, and coherence of the generated text. In this paper, we include information about the generation, processing, or adjustments made to the text in differently-colored blocks. ∗ Position: We argue that large-scale trained conversational agents like ChatGPT can generate concise, grammatically correct, and well-structured text. However, occasional errors in factual accuracy, clarity, and scientific rigor were observed. We acknowledge the potential of ChatGPT and similar models as tools for generating initial drafts of scientific work. Conclusion: ChatGPT demonstrates promise as a scientific writing tool, but unsupervised use in this context is not yet recommended. Further research is necessary to enhance the accuracy and scientific validity of the generated text. Researchers should exercise caution and view ChatGPT as a complement to human writing rather than a replacement. We provide key recommendations for using conversational agents in scientific writing, including human oversight and training the model on scientific literature and unbiased data. By utilizing AI in the authorship process, we present an example of how AI involvement can be reported.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between academic writing and generative artificial intelligence (AI). Design/methodology/approach This paper is characterized as exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach. Two approaches were used: the first, a narrative review of the literature with a systematic search from which a data collection stage was carried out using asynchronous interviews by means of an online questionnaire. Findings The results indicate that generative AI should be seen as a complementary tool for creative and critical academic writing. The data collected also highlighted issues related to academic dishonesty and the new type of plagiarism – plagiarism made possible by technologies – as well as issues of authorship and legitimacy of work carried out with AI and the loss of reflective and critical thinking and creativity. Research limitations/implications The considerable increase in resources using AI in all dimensions of human life. Practical implications The impact that the use of generative AIs can have on the creation of knowledge and the dissemination of scientific research. Social implications The impact that the use of generative AIs can have on the creation of knowledge and on the dissemination of scientific research. Originality/value The need for academia to anticipate the use of AI in academic writing and to incorporate its benefits into this process, especially considering researchers in training.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the main constituent elements of text generated by ChatGPT in response to questions on an emerging topic in the academic literature in Portuguese - health literacy - and discuss how the evidence produced can contribute to improving our understanding of the limits and challenges of using artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing. We conducted an exploratory descriptive study based on responses to five consecutive questions in Portuguese and English with increasing levels of complexity put to ChatGPT. Our findings reveal the potential of the use of widely available, unrestricted access AI-based technologies like ChatGPT for academic writing. Featuring a simple and intuitive interface, the tool generated structured and coherent text using natural-like language. Considering that academic productivism is associated with a growing trend in professional misconduct, especially plagiarism, there is a need too take a careful look at academic writing and scientific knowledge dissemination processes mediated by AI technologies.

Abstract:The debate surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into scientific writing has already attracted significant interest in medical and life sciences. While AI can undoubtedly expedite the process of manuscript creation and correction, it raises several criticisms. The crossover between AI and health sciences is relatively recent, but the use of AI tools among physicians and other scientists who work in the life sciences is growing very fast. Within this whirlwind, it is becoming essential to realize where we are heading and what the limits are, including an ethical perspective. Modern conversational AIs exhibit a context awareness that enables them to understand and remember any conversation beyond any predefined script. Even more impressively, they can learn and adapt as they engage with a growing volume of human language input. They all share neural networks as background mathematical models and differ from old chatbots for their use of a specific network architecture called transformer model [ 1 ]. Some of them exceed 100 terabytes (TB) (e.g., Bloom, LaMDA) or even 500 TB (e.g., Megatron-Turing NLG) of text data, the 4.0 version of ChatGPT (GPT-4) was trained with nearly 45 TB, but stays updated by the internet connection and may integrate with different plugins that enhance its functionality, making it multimodal.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has many applications in various aspects of our daily life, including health, criminal, education, civil, business, and liability law. One aspect of AI that has gained significant attention is natural language processing (NLP), which refers to the ability of computers to understand and generate human language. Objective: This study aims to examine the potential for, and concerns of, using AI in scientific research. For this purpose, high-impact research articles were generated by analyzing the quality of reports generated by ChatGPT and assessing the application's impact on the research framework, data analysis, and the literature review. The study also explored concerns around ownership and the integrity of research when using AI-generated text. Methods: A total of 4 articles were generated using ChatGPT, and thereafter evaluated by 23 reviewers. The researchers developed an evaluation form to assess the quality of the articles generated. Additionally, 50 abstracts were generated using ChatGPT and their quality was evaluated. The data were subjected to ANOVA and thematic analysis to analyze the qualitative data provided by the reviewers. Results: When using detailed prompts and providing the context of the study, ChatGPT would generate high-quality research that could be published in high-impact journals. However, ChatGPT had a minor impact on developing the research framework and data analysis. The primary area needing improvement was the development of the literature review. Moreover, reviewers expressed concerns around ownership and the integrity of the research when using AI-generated text. Nonetheless, ChatGPT has a strong potential to increase human productivity in research and can be used in academic writing. Conclusions: AI-generated text has the potential to improve the quality of high-impact research articles. The findings of this study suggest that decision makers and researchers should focus more on the methodology part of the research, which includes research design, developing research tools, and analyzing data in depth, to draw strong theoretical and practical implications, thereby establishing a revolution in scientific research in the era of AI. The practical implications of this study can be used in different fields such as medical education to deliver materials to develop the basic competencies for both medicine students and faculty members.

Abstract:Introduction: The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has presented several opportunities to ease human work. AI applications are available for almost every domain of life. A new technology, Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT), was introduced by OpenAI in November 2022, and has become a topic of discussion across the world. ChatGPT-3 has brought many opportunities, as well as ethical and privacy considerations. ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) which has been trained on the events that happened until 2021. The use of AI and its assisted technologies in scientific writing is against research and publication ethics. Therefore, policies and guidelines need to be developed over the use of such tools in scientific writing. The main objective of the present study was to highlight the use of AI and AI assisted technologies such as the ChatGPT and other chatbots in the scientific writing and in the research domain resulting in bias, spread of inaccurate information and plagiarism. Methodology: Experiments were designed to test the accuracy of ChatGPT when used in research and academic writing. Results: The information provided by ChatGPT was inaccurate and may have far-reaching implications in the field of medical science and engineering. Critical thinking should be encouraged among researchers to raise awareness about the associated privacy and ethical risks. Conclusions: Regulations for ethical and privacy concerns related to the use of ChatGPT in academics and research need to be developed.

Abstract:We have assessed the chatbot Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) software designed to simulate conversations with human users, in an experiment designed to test its relevance to scientific writing. ChatGPT could become a promising and powerful tool for tasks such as automated draft generation, which may be useful in academic activities to make writing work faster and easier. However, the use of this tool in scientific writing raises some ethical concerns and therefore there have been calls for it to be regulated. It may be difficult to recognise whether an abstract or paper is written by a chatbot or a human being, because chatbots use advanced techniques, such as natural language processing and machine learning, to generate text that is similar to human writing. To detect the author is a complex task and requires thorough critical reading to reach a conclusion. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explore the pros and cons of the use of chatbots in scientific writing.

ChatGPT is one of the largest and most advanced language models to date, with 175 billion parameters. The article aims to examine the impact of artificial intelligence tools and techniques on academic research and their potential implications for academic ethics. In particular, this article will focus on the practices of ChatGPT in generating scientific research within the context of academic ethics. ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can generate text in different formats, conduct literature searches, and suggest titles for the created text. However, using ChatGPT to select topics with a low similarity score in similarity checkers may lead to ethical violations. This article finds that the use of artificial intelligence applications in academic research may raise concerns about academic ethics, and the limited availability of technologies that can detect such violations poses a significant challenge to academic writing.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence and large-language model chatbots have generated significant attention in higher education, and in research practice. Whether ChatGPT, Bard, Jasper Chat, Socratic, Bing AI, DialoGPT, or something else, these are all shaping how education and research occur. In this Editorial, we offer five editorial principles to guide decision-making for editors, which will also become policy for the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice. First, we articulate that non-human authorship does not constitute authorship. Second, artificial intelligence should be leveraged to support authors. Third, artificial intelligence can offer useful feedback and pre-review. Fourth, transparency of artificial intelligence usage is an expectation. And fifth, the use of AI in research design, conduct, and dissemination must comply with established ethical principles. In these five principles, we articulate a position of optimism for the new forms of knowledge and research we might garner. We see AI as a mechanism that may augment our current practices but will not likely replace all of them. However, we do issue caution to the limitations of large language models including possible proliferation of poor-quality research, Stochastic Parroting, and data hallucinations. As with all research, authors should be comfortably familiar with the underlying methods being used to generate data and should ensure a clear understanding of the AI tools being used prior to deployment for research.

Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly tools like OpenAI's popular ChatGPT, is reshaping the landscape of computer science research. Used wisely, these tools can boost the productivity of a computer research scientist. This paper provides an exploration of the diverse applications of ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies in computer science academic research, making recommendations about the use of Generative AI to make more productive the role of the computer research scientist, with the focus of writing new research papers. We highlight innovative uses such as brainstorming research ideas, aiding in the drafting and styling of academic papers and assisting in the synthesis of state-of-the-art section. Further, we delve into using these technologies in understanding interdisciplinary approaches, making complex texts simpler, and recommending suitable academic journals for publication. Significant focus is placed on generative AI's contributions to synthetic data creation, research methodology, and mentorship, as well as in task organization and article quality assessment. The paper also addresses the utility of AI in article review, adapting texts to length constraints, constructing counterarguments, and survey development. Moreover, we explore the capabilities of these tools in disseminating ideas, generating images and audio, text transcription, and engaging with editors. We also describe some non-recommended uses of generative AI for computer science research, mainly because of the limitations of this technology.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI), with its infinite capabilities, has ushered in an era of transformation in the twenty-first century. ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), an AI language model, has lately been in the spotlight, and there is an increasing partnership between the research authors and the chatGPT. Using ChatGPT, authors can set new benchmarks in paper writing in terms of speed, accuracy, consistency, and adaptability. ChatGPT has turned out to be an invaluable tool for manuscript writing, editing, and reference management. While it has numerous advantages, it has been criticised due to ethical quandaries, inaccuracies in scientific data and facts, and, most importantly, a lack of critical thinking skills. These disadvantages of using ChatGPT place limitations on its use in medical publications since these articles guide the future management of many diseases. While AI can fix issues, it lacks the ability to think like humans and thus cannot substitute human authors. To better comprehend the future of this technology in research, we discuss the advantages, drawbacks, and ethical dilemmas of using ChatGPT in paper writing by reviewing existing literature on Pubmed and Google Scholar and using ChatGPT itself to understand the prompt response.

Abstract:Purpose The article discusses the current relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) in research and how AI improves various research methods. This article focuses on the practical case study of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) to provide a guideline for employing AI in the process. Design/methodology/approach Researchers no longer require technical skills to use AI in their research. The recent discussion about using Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a chatbot by OpenAI, has reached the academic world and fueled heated debates about the future of academic research. Nevertheless, as the saying goes, AI will not replace our job; a human being using AI will. This editorial aims to provide an overview of the current state of using AI in research, highlighting recent trends and developments in the field. Findings The main result is guidelines for the use of AI in the scientific research process. The guidelines were developed for the literature review case but the authors believe the instructions provided can be adjusted to many fields of research, including but not limited to quantitative research, data qualification, research on unstructured data, qualitative data and even on many support functions and repetitive tasks. Originality/value AI already has the potential to make researchers' work faster, more reliable and more convenient. The authors highlight the advantages and limitations of AI in the current time, which should be present in any research utilizing AI. Advantages include objectivity and repeatability in research processes that currently are subject to human error. The most substantial disadvantages lie in the architecture of current general-purpose models, which understanding is essential for using them in research. The authors will describe the most critical shortcomings without going into technical detail and suggest how to work with the shortcomings daily.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven language models have the potential to serve as an educational tool, facilitate clinical decision-making, and support research and academic writing. The benefits of their use are yet to be evaluated and concerns have been raised regarding the accuracy, transparency, and ethical implications of using this AI technology in academic publishing. At the moment, Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is one of the most powerful and widely debated AI language models. Here, we discuss its feasibility to answer scientific questions, identify relevant literature, and assist writing in the field of human reproduction. With consideration of the scarcity of data on this topic, we assessed the feasibility of ChatGPT in academic writing, using data from six meta-analyses published in a leading journal of human reproduction. The text generated by ChatGPT was evaluated and compared to the original text by blinded reviewers. While ChatGPT can produce high-quality text and summarize information efficiently, its current ability to interpret data and answer scientific questions is limited, and it cannot be relied upon for a literature search or accurate source citation due to the potential spread of incomplete or false information. We advocate for open discussions within the reproductive medicine research community to explore the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this AI technology. Researchers and reviewers should be informed about AI language models, and we encourage authors to transparently disclose their use.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted many areas of healthcare. AI in healthcare uses machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing to analyze copious amounts of healthcare data and yield valuable outcomes. In the sleep medicine field, a large amount of physiological data is gathered compared to other branches of medicine. This field is primed for innovations with the help of AI. A good quality of sleep is crucial for optimal health. About one billion people are estimated to have obstructive sleep apnea worldwide, but it is difficult to diagnose and treat all the people with limited resources. Sleep apnea is one of the major contributors to poor health. Most of the sleep apnea patients remain undiagnosed. Those diagnosed with sleep apnea have difficulty getting it optimally treated due to several factors, and AI can help in this situation. AI can also help in the diagnosis and management of other sleep disorders such as insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia, narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorders, periodic leg movement disorders, etc. In this manuscript, we aim to address three critical issues about the use of AI in sleep medicine: (1) How can AI help in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders? (2) How can AI fill the gap in the care of sleep disorders? and (3) What are the ethical and legal considerations of using AI in sleep medicine?
