Abstract:Background: Though there is no doubt that the left hemisphere (LH) is the superior language processor, an increasing number of researches have demonstrated significant linguistic ability in the nonverbal right hemisphere (RH), such as orthographic processing and the superiority of recognising words presented in unfamiliar formats. However, it is difficult to rule out the role of the LH in language processing completely, because the subjects reported in most studies have no lesion or commissurotomy in the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC), which allowed the interaction between left and right hemispheres in visual word processing. Patients with a lesion or commissurotomy in the SCC provide a unique opportunity to explore visual word form processing in the RH.Aims: The study involved a series of neuropsychological tests to investigate visual word form processing in the RH.Methods & Procedures: Two unique Chinese patients with a splenium lesion were asked to complete a series of neuropsychological tests, consisting of the Line Bisection Test, Albert Cancellation Test, the Aphasia Battery of Chinese (ABC), mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and visual word form processing (reading aloud, lexical decision in the Song typeface and handwritten styles) presented tachistoscopically in left or right visual field.Outcomes & Results: We found that two patients had difficulties in reading simple and compound Chinese characters presented tachistoscopically in the left visual field (LVF), called left hemialexia, while their lexical decision-making ability in the LVF was relatively spared. In addition, the two patients' performance on lexical decision-making in the LVF declined to a random level in the handwritten styles.Conclusions: These findings provide direct supporting evidence that the RH is important for processing a character's orthographic form and suggest that the LH is necessary for extracting an abstract presentation of a character in visual word form processing.
The Differences of Visual Word Form Processing Mechanism Between Chinese and Western Pure Alexia

Abstract:Pure alexia is a dysfunction with simple symptoms and specific impaired regions, which happens at early stage of reading called visual word form processing, and involves visual word form area (VWFA). Reading as an acquired higher nervous function is closely related with culture, so the comparison between Chinese and Western pure alexia could lead to further understanding of visual word form processing mechanism. As the different clinical manifestations of pure alexia in Chinese and Western cultures, the signal distinction of words is the primary cause whereas the plasticity of VWFA is the neurobiological basis. Chinese and Western reading both present left-hemispheric lateralization, but based on the special feature of Chinese pure alexia, it is inferred that the right hemispheric may play a more outstanding role in Chinese word processing. In fMRI research on Chinese and Western reading, it is indicated that there is hierarchical organization in VWFA, which is corresponding to hierarchical coding in sublexical processing, but it cannot elucidate some phenomena in Chinese pure alexia such as absence of word-length effect (WLE). Visual Analysis and Lexical Access of Chinese Characters by Chinese As Second Language Readers

Abstract:To assess the learning of word form, pronunciation, and meaning in an unfamiliar writing system, we carried out Event Related Potential (ERP) experiments with learners of Chinese at the end of their first and second terms of Chinese class at an American university. The subjects were required to recognize a target Chinese character or English word with ERP recorded. They named filler targets indicated by a signal 1000ms after the onset of the stimuli. The orthographic processing of characters and words was extracted as a 200ms component by Principle Component Analysis (PCA). The semantic processing was extracted as a 400ms component (N400). The 200ms PCA component was negative at occipital (N200) and positive at frontal electrodes (P200). It was sensitive to visual analysis and lexical access respectively. ERP results showed that the visual analysis of Chinese was more difficult than English at the first term, but not the second term. The lexical access was more difficult and the semantic processing was slower for Chinese than English at both terms. Faster lexical access was obtained for familiar characters at the first term, but not the second term. The separation of visual analysis and lexical access at the second term indicates a threshold style processing of Chinese characters for the learners with moderate reading proficiency.
Sex Differences of Hemispheric Lateralization for Faces and Chinese Characters in Early Perceptual Processing.

Abstract:Previous event-related potential studies showed that the N170 response is left-lateralized for words and right-lateralized for faces. Using a one-back repetition task, this study aimed to clarify sex differences in hemispheric specialization for both faces and words in early visual processing. We found that the N170 amplitude elicited by faces in males was right-lateralized, while in females it was bilateral. Interestingly, the N170 amplitude elicited by Chinese characters in males was bilateral, whereas in females it was left-lateralized. The N170 latency for faces was shorter in females than in males, whereas the N170 latency for Chinese characters was similar in females and males. The degree of lateralization of faces was significantly related to the degree of lateralization of Chinese characters in both the female and male groups. Therefore, sex differences in N170 hemispheric lateralization for faces are different from those for Chinese characters, and there are some links between the two categories of objects of expertise in early perceptual processing.
Centro-Parietal N200: an Event-Related Potential Component Specific to Chinese Visual Word Recognition

Abstract:Almost all written languages currently used in the world are alphabetic or phonologically-based scripts (e.g., English) whose word recognition involves discrimination of one-dimensional linear combinations of several dozens of letters or phonological units, except written Chinese whose vocabulary consists of a large number of block characters, the analysis of which relies on the extraction of 2-dimensional form information at multiple levels including radical, character, and multiple-character word. Whether the dramatic contrast between the 2 types of orthography leads to distinctive mental processes is a fundamental question in psycholinguistic research unanswered in the past three decades. Using event-related potentials and visual lexical decision tasks, we asked native Chinese speakers to discriminate between real Chinese words and pseudo- or non-words and observed a widespread negative deflection with centro-parietal focus elicited 200 ms post-stimulus onset. This N200 response showed a clear and large amplitude enhancement upon word repetition and seems to be specific to Chinese as no similar effects had been reported in word recognition studies involving alphabetic scripts under similar experimental conditions. Further evidence showed that this N200 could not be attributed to non-linguistic sensori-perceptual processes, nor phonological or semantic processes, but likely reflects very early identification of the orthography of individual words involving extensive and higher-level visual analysis. Recently the first author proposed a meaning-spelling theory of written Chinese vocabulary proposing that the Chinese and alphabetic scripts are the only 2 possible logical types of mature human writing systems, and that the former is more thoroughly a visual language compared with the latter and thus shall emphasize more of visual processing. Reinforcing each other, the meaning-spelling theory and the discovery of the centro-parietal N200 reveal the uniqueness of Chinese both theoretically and empirically, and provide strong arguments for the intrinsic distinction between written Chinese and alphabetic scripts.
The effect of late posterior negativity in retrieving the color of Chinese characters

Abstract:Previous event-related potentials (ERPs) research has suggested that the retrieval tasks for many sources of items were operated in the frontal regions, but Cycowicz et al. [2-4,6] recorded the late posterior negativity (LPN), a component over the posterior cortex, in retrieving the associative color sources of pictures. To examine whether the LPN could also be observed in retrieving both the associative and the organizational color sources of verbal stimuli, two experiments were designed by using Chinese nouns as stimuli. Both experiments revealed significant LPN that was related to the tasks of color source retrieval. These findings demonstrate that the association between LPN and search for and/or retrieval/evaluation of the colors of objects is fairly strong, and this association is insensitive to both the attributes of stimulus materials and those of the color sources.
Impact of characteristics of L1 literacy experience on picture processing: ERP data from trilingual non-native Chinese and English readers

Abstract:Previous studies involving ex-illiterate and young readers of alphabetic scripts have shown that processing of non-verbal visual stimuli may be affected by literacy, which is attributable to intensive perceptual training during reading acquisition. This study examined whether the characteristics of one's native writing system, with respect to visual complexity and overall shape of orthographic unit, would influence the processing of pictured objects using event-related potential (ERP) with linear mixed-effects modeling. Kanji and Hangul constitute an interesting contrast as they differ in visual complexity but are similar in orthographic shape. Neural responses to pictures were analyzed in N170 and N400 reflecting ease of recognition and access to semantic representation, respectively. Trilingual speakers with Japanese or Korean as L1, who learned to read Chinese and English as non-native languages, as well as native Chinese and native English readers participated in a repetition detection task in which mixed blocks of pictures and words (Chinese or English) were presented. The overall results showed bilaterally distributed N170 and N400, and group differences in the N400 were confined to the anterior region. More importantly, Japanese readers exhibited more negative N170 and less negative N400 than Korean participants regardless of language context. The present findings have provided insights into the possible impact of reading acquisition on non-linguistic visual processing, and suggest that one's early experience of a visually complex orthography has positive transfer to processing of line drawings in terms of more efficient visual recognition and semantic access.
Language Experience Modulates the Visual N200 Response for Disyllabic Chinese Words: An Event-Related Potential Study

Abstract:Prior event-related potential (ERP) research on how the brain processes non-alphabetic scripts like Chinese has identified an N200 component related to early visual processing of Chinese disyllabic words. An enhanced N200 response was observed when similar prime-target pairs were presented, but it was not elicited when native Chinese speakers read Korean Hangul, a script resembling Chinese characters. This led to the proposal that N200 was not a universal marker for orthographic processing but rather specific and unique to Chinese. However, there was uncertainty due to the absence of Korean participants in the previous research. The impact of language experience on N200 remains unclear. To address this, the present pilot ERP study included three adult groups (totaling 30 participants) with varying language proficiency levels. The participants judged if randomly presented words were Chinese or Korean, while the ERP responses were recorded. The behavioral data showed high accuracy across the groups. The reaction times differed between the groups with the native speakers responding faster. The N200 patterns varied across the groups. Both Chinese native speakers and Chinese-as-second-language learners showed stronger N200 responses for Chinese words compared to Korean words regardless of whether an adaptive or a fixed-time window was used for the N200 quantification, but this was not the case for Korean native speakers. Our cross-linguistic study suggests that N200 is not exclusive to Chinese orthography. Instead, it reflects general visual processing sensitive to both orthographic features and learning experience.

Abstract:Logographic language and alphabetic language differ significantly in orthography. Investigating the commonality and particularity of visual word recognition between the two distinct writing systems is informative for understating the neural mechanisms underlying visual word recognition. In the present study, we compared the chronometry of early lexical processing and the brain regions involved in early lexical processing between Chinese (logographic language) and Mongolian (alphabetic language) by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) using both implicit and explicit reading tasks. Familiar Chinese one-character words (lexical) and unknown Chinese one-character words (non-lexical) were pseudorandomly presented to native Chinese readers in Experiment 1. Mongolian words (lexical) and pseudowords (non-lexical) were pseudorandomly presented to native Mongolian readers in Experiment 2. In the color decision task, participants were asked to decide the color (black or blue) of each stimulus. In the lexical recognition task, participants were asked to report whether they could recognize each stimulus. The results showed that in both experiments and both tasks, ERPs to lexical items differed significantly from those to non-lexical items in the parietooccipital scalp region approximately 250 ms after stimulus onset, reflecting the early lexical processing, which likely originated from the ventral occipitotemporal cortex as revealed by source analysis. These results indicated that although Chinese and Mongolian differed markedly in orthographic features, the neural mechanisms underlying early lexical processing are similar between the two languages.

Abstract:Recent studies have found holistic processing to be a marker of expertise for perception of words in alphabetic (e.g., English) and non-alphabetic (e.g., Chinese) writing systems, consistent with what has been found for faces and other objects of face-like expertise. It is unknown, however, whether holistic processing of words occurs in an early, perceptual stage as it does for faces. We examined how early holistic processing of Chinese characters emerges by recording the event-related potentials (ERPs) in an adaptation paradigm. Participants judged if the top parts of two sequentially presented characters were the same or different while ignoring the bottom part. An early potential (P1) at the posterior channels was smaller when the attended top parts were the same compared with when they are different, indicating an adaptation effect. Critically, for trials with identical top parts, P1 was larger when the irrelevant bottom parts were different, indicating a release of adaptation. This effect was present only when the two character parts were aligned but not misaligned, and only for characters but not for pseudocharacters. The finding of early sensitivity to all parts of a Chinese character suggests that Chinese characters are represented holistically at a perceptual level.
The Association Between Late Posterior Negativity Old/New Effect and Chinese-Character-Color Source Retrieval

Abstract:Many studies showed that prefrontal cortex played an important role in many kinds of source retrieval tasks,such as sound,association and location;however,the results for color source retrieval were different.To exam the association between Chinese-character-color retrieval and late posterior negativity old/new effect(LPN),an event-related study was conducted with Chinese nouns as experimental materials.The results demonstrated that there existed significant LPN old/new effect from 650 to 950ms during color source retrieval phase compared with the item recognition task,which was consistent with the results by Cycowicz,et al.(2001,2003,2005).These results indicated that the association between LPN old/new effect and color source retrieval not only existed in non-linguistic materials,but also in linguistic materials.

Abstract:Stroke order knowledge is critical for Chinese reading and spelling acquisition. Previous studies have demonstrated enhancements of the N2 and P3 event-related potential (ERP) components at the Pz electrode to stroke order violations of Chinese characters in younger adults. However, it remained unclear whether similar ERP responses could be found in children. The current study investigated the ERP responses to stroke order violations of Chinese characters in children and examined the associations of the ERP responses with children's Chinese reading and spelling performance. A total of 26 Grade 2 Hong Kong Chinese children observed stroke-by-stroke displays of Chinese characters and judged whether the Chinese characters were written in the correct order. The ERP results showed larger anterior N2 and posterior P3 at the midline electrodes to the incorrect strokes than to the correct strokes. In addition, a smaller right lateralized temporal N2 response to the incorrect strokes was found in poor spellers as compared with good spellers of Chinese. The effect of the right lateralized temporal N2 response on reading performance was fully mediated through spelling ability. These results demonstrated increases in the anterior N2 and posterior P3 responses to stroke order violation of Chinese characters in second graders and suggest the right lateralized N2 response as a potential neural marker of Chinese literacy development in children.
Effects of Phonological Consistency and Semantic Radical Combinability on N170 and P200 in the Reading of Chinese Phonograms

Abstract:Studies have suggested that visually presented words are obligatorily decomposed into constituents that could be mapped to language representations. The present study aims to elucidate how orthographic processing of one constituent affects the other and vice versa during a word recognition task. Chinese orthographic system has characters representing syllables and meanings instead of suffixation roles, and the majority of Chinese characters are phonograms that can be further decomposed into phonetic radical and semantic radical. We propose that semantic radical combinability indexed by semantic radicals and the effect of phonological consistency indexed by phonetic radicals would interact with each other during the reading of Chinese phonograms. Twenty-six right-handed native Chinese speakers were recruited to the study. Participants were presented with phonograms divided into four conditions following their semantic radical combinability (large vs. small) and phonological consistency (high vs. low). EEG signals were recorded throughout the covert naming task. Our results show that there is an interaction effect between phonological consistency and semantic radical combinability on the right hemisphere N170 activity while reading phonograms. Semantic radical combinability influenced the right hemisphere N170 during the process of low-consistency character reading but not high-consistency character reading. On the other hand, the left hemisphere N170 revealed a more significant activity during reading high-consistency characters and was not affected by radical combinability. In addition, while low-consistency characters revealed a larger P200 than high-consistency characters, the semantic radical combinability effect on P200 was only significant when participants were reading high-consistency characters but not low-consistency characters. These results provide new information about how ERPs are involved in word recognition within the context of interaction among orthographic and phonological dimensions.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the neurocognitive network for processing visual word forms in native Chinese speakers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In order to compare the processing of phonological and semantic representations, we developed parallel rhyming and meaning association judgment tasks that required explicit access and manipulation of these representations. Subjects showed activation in left inferior/middle frontal gyri, bilateral medial frontal gyri, bilateral middle occipital/fusiform gyri, and bilateral cerebella for both the rhyming and meaning tasks. A direct comparison of the tasks revealed that the rhyming task showed more activation in the posterior dorsal region of the inferior/middle frontal gyrus (BA 9/44) and in the inferior parietal lobule (BA 40). The meaning task showed more activation in the anterior ventral region of the inferior/middle frontal gyrus (BA 47) and in the superior/middle temporal gyrus (BA 22,21). These findings are consistent with previous studies in English that suggest specialization of inferior frontal regions for the access and manipulation of phonological vs. semantic representations, but also suggest that this specialization extends to the middle frontal gyrus for Chinese. These findings are also consistent with the suggestion that the left middle temporal gyrus is involved in representing semantic information and the left inferior parietal lobule is involved in mapping between orthographic and phonological representations.

Abstract:This study examined the brain activity elicited by the hemispheric asymmetries and morpheme transposition of two-character Chinese words (canonical and transposed word) and pseudowords using event-related potentials (ERPs) with a dual-target rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. Electrophysiological results showed facilitation effects for canonical words with centrally presented visual field (CVF) and right visual field (RVF) presentations but not with left visual field (LVF) presentations, as reflected by less negative N400 amplitudes. Moreover, more positive late positive component (LPC) amplitudes were observed for both canonical words and transposed words irrespective of the visual fields. More importantly, transposed words elicited a more negative N400 amplitude and a less positive LPC amplitude compared with the amplitudes elicited by canonical words for CVF and RVF presentations. For LVF presentations, transposed words elicited a less negative N250 amplitude compared with canonical words, and there was no significant difference between canonical words and transposed words in the N400 effect. Taken together, we concluded that character transposition facilitated the mapping of whole-word orthographic representation to semantic information in the LVF, as reflected by the N250 component, and such morpheme transposition influenced whole-word semantic processing in CVF and RVF presentations, as reflected by N400 and LPC components.

Differential cerebral involvement in perceiving Chinese characters: Levels of processing approach

Abstract:Three experiments were designed to determine the accuracy and latency with which right-handed Chinese university students (12 females and 12 males) recognized Chinese characters in the left and right visual half-fields (VHFs). The experiments varied in the "depth" of processing required. Experiment 1 was a lexical decision task in which the configuration of the stimulus (a real Chinese character or the mirror image of a real character) determined whether the grapheme was an actual character. Experiment 2 required phonological processing; i.e., subjects had to decide whether a character (or a foil) matched the sound of an orally presented Chinese character. Experiment 3 required semantic processing; i.e., subjects had to decide if a character (or a foil) belonged to a particular semantic category. In each experiment, single characters were presented unilaterally for 150 msec. There was a significant right VHF superiority for accuracy scores for Experiments 2 and 3 but not for Experiment 1. None of the experiments yielded significant visual asymmetries in reaction time. The results do not support previous claims of orthography-specific laterality, but instead show that laterality effects for morphemic stimuli vary with the orthographic, phonological, and semantic processing demands of the task.

Lateralized Stroop Interference Effect With Chinese Characters-1

Abstract:Previous studies show Stroop effect is stronger in the right visual field. However, (1) whether the lateralization patterns of two aspects of Stroop effects, facilitation and inhibition, for native Chinese speakers are similar to each other, and (2) whether secondary interference tasks modulate Stroop effect as in the studies about the lateralized Whorf effect, are remaining open questions. We show in the present study visual field asymmetry of Stroop interference was caused mainly by the lateralized facilitation effect, but not by the bilateral inhibition effect. Moreover, contrary to the robustness of verbal interference task in studies on the lateralized Whorf effect, the magnitude of the visual field asymmetry was not modulated by the secondary verbal interference task. This study further consolidates the idea that language information and color naming interact more strongly in the left hemisphere, which sheds light on the debate of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis based on Chinese characters.
The time course of brain activity in reading English and Chinese: An ERP study of Chinese bilinguals

Abstract:Chinese bilinguals performed a delayed naming task, reading both Chinese characters and English words, while EEGs were recorded by a 128-channel system. Principle component analysis (PCA) of Event Related Potentials (ERP) from the onset of the stimulus suggested a temporal unfolding of graphic, phonological, and semantic processing that depended on both language and word frequency. At 150 msec, Chinese produced an earlier and higher amplitude shift (N150) than English. At 250 msec, frequency effects were significant for both Chinese and English, but at 450 msec, only the English frequency effect was reliable. Source localization analysis by Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) showed bilateral occipital (left BA 17, right BA 18) visual processing of Chinese characters with left occipital only (left BA 17) for English high-frequency words. Low-frequency English words showed activation bilaterally, but with a more diffused and extended temporal pattern. Right prefrontal area (BA 10) was found to be strongly activated in the mid latency (300-400 msec) period of Chinese character naming, whereas English word naming showed more medial frontal (BA 8, and 10) activation. Abstract:Introduction The investigation of how orthography and phonology influence lexical semantic access in visual word identification is a crucial area in psycholinguistics. Previous studies, focusing on alphabetic scripts in bilingual lexical recognition, have highlighted the facilitative role of phonological similarity. Yet, the impact of cross-language phonological similarity in bilinguals using non-alphabetic scripts remains unclear. Methods In this study, we employed a lexical decision task to examine Chinese–Japanese bilinguals. Participants were presented with Chinese–Japanese cognate translation pairs, categorized into phonologically similar and dissimilar cognates. Results Analysis of event-related potentials (ERP) revealed no significant differences between phonologically similar and dissimilar contexts in the early time windows (90–170 ms and 170–270 ms). However, in the later time window (350–500 ms), significant differences were observed, with the phonologically dissimilar condition eliciting a larger negative wave. Discussion Contrary to findings in alphabetic script-based studies, our results suggest that in logographic script processing, the activation of phonology and semantics occurs simultaneously, and the influence of phonology is limited. This indicates a distinct cognitive processing mechanism in non-alphabetic language bilinguals, providing new insights into the dynamics of bilingual lexical recognition.

Abstract:Atypical brain lateralization patterns in processing both human faces (reduced right lateralization) and alphabetic languages (reduced left lateralization) have been found in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Yet, whether Chinese children with ASD show similar atypical brain lateralization patterns in processing faces and language is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to examine this issue with N170, an event-related potential (ERP) component responsible for faces and visual words. Twenty Chinese children with ASD and 18 typically developing children participated in the study. ERPs were recorded while participants were presented with Chinese characters and faces. Results showed a significant right-lateralization of N170 for control children in processing both faces and characters, whereas there was no lateralization of N170 for children with ASD, either in processing faces or characters. The results suggest that Chinese children with ASD exhibited atypical lateralization in processing both faces and written words. The reduced right lateralization for processing faces in Chinese children with ASD compared with the control group was similar to the lateralization deficits demonstrated in western studies. However, the reduced right lateralization for processing Chinese characters in ASD was different from the deficit pattern of lateralization for processing alphabetic languages.
