Abstract:OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and its association with sleep quality in university students from the Anhui province in China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in China with 1328 participants. The prevalence of underweight and obesity in university students was estimated according to the reference working group on obesity in China. The sleep quality was evaluated using the standard PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). RESULTS This study included 470 male and 858 female students from a university in Anhui; 4.4% of the females and 17.7% of the males were overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity in males was significantly higher than in females, and the prevalence of obesity in higher years was greater than in other years (p<0.05). In general, the mean score for sleep quality was 4.91±2.67; 36.5% of male and 39.1% of female students had poor sleep quality (PSQI score >5). Among the seven components of sleep quality, sleep duration and the use of sleep medication showed significant differences between male and female students and different years (p<0.05). An obvious correlation was found between sleep quality and body mass index (BMI)(p<0.000) in females who took hypnotic drugs. CONCLUSION This study suggests that the sleep quality of females is probably associated with their BMI. College students are a special group of young adults whose cause of poor sleeping quality and BMI may be significant to study, so the health status of university students can be improved.
Risk factors and outcome of acute myocardial infarction in Bedouins living in permanent compared to unrecognized villages in southern Israel.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The incidence and prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) among Bedouins living in the Negev region were very low until the 1960s. During the past 50 years this pattern has changed: in parallel to the changes in lifestyle and nutrition in the Bedouin population, a rapid increase in incidence and mortality from CHD occurred. The relationship between the rise in CHD incidence and the degree of urbanization in this population has not been investigated to date. The study hypothesis was that the prevalence of risk factors and the outcome of myocardial infarction in Bedouins differ between those settled in permanent villages and those remaining in unrecognized villages. OBJECTIVES To compare the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, clinical characteristics, and in-hospital management of a first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in two Bedouin groups: those residing in permanent villages versus those residing in unrecognized villages. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of in-hospital data of 352 patients admitted with a first AMI during the period 1997-2003 to Soroka Medical Center, the only medical facility in the region. RESULTS There were no differences between the two groups regarding the major cardiovascular risk factors and outcome. A relatively greater number of patients from urban areas underwent catheterization of any sort during their hospitalization (primary, rescue, and risk stratification; P = 0.038). No significant difference was found between the two groups in the type of catheterization performed (P = 0.279). CONCLUSIONS We found no differences in the clinical characteristics and in-hospital management of patients with AMI between Bedouins residing in permanent villages versus unrecognized villages.

Abstract:Short sleep duration increases the risk of obesity in older adults. Subgroup analyses indicate significant correlations when obesity cutoff values are body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 and body mass index ≥ 27 kg/m2, sleep duration is measured with objective tools and different research designs, in developed countries and Euro‐American regions. Background Research on sleep duration and obesity is extensive in children and young individuals but limited and inconsistent for older adults. Our study aims to clarify the current status of this association in the elderly population. Methods We searched six English and four Chinese databases up to January 25, 2024, for observational studies on sleep duration and obesity in older adults. Two researchers independently conducted the literature search and data extraction. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale for cohort studies and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for cross‐sectional studies. Meta‐analyses were performed using Stata 15.0 software, using both random‐effects and fixed‐effects models to calculate pooled odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The meta‐analysis of 15 studies found a correlation between short sleep duration and obesity in older individuals (pooled odds ratio, 1.40 [95% CI: 1.12–1.73]; P = 0.003). However, no significant correlation was found between long sleep duration and obesity among the elderly (pooled odds ratio, 1.04 [95% CI, 0.95–1.13]; P = 0.426). Conclusions Short sleep duration in the elderly was associated with obesity. More prospective studies need to be included in the future to improve the reliability of the conclusions. Abstract:Sleep disorders are a common syndrome and could affect the life quality of the older adults. This study aimed to investigate the association between nutritional status and sleep quality in the Chinese community-dwelling older adults. A total of 2,878 participants ≥ 65 years old from the Yiwu Elderly Cohort were included in the study. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF). Participants were categorized as subjects with malnutrition, at risk of malnutrition or well-nourished based on their MNA-SF score. A Preliminary Study on the Relation of Sleep Duration and Physical Activity Level to Obesity

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relation of sleep duration and physical activity (PA) level to obesity. Methods A total of 3,984 Hong Kong Chinese adults,aged 20～69 years,participated in a citywide physical fitness and activity survey in 2005 ～2006. Participants were asked to complete a series of physical fitness tests including body weight and height,as well as a questionnaire on sleep duration,PA level,educational level and lifestyle behaviors etc. Chi-square test was applied to compare the prevalence of overweight and obesity in different PA levels or sleep duration groups. Based on the normal sleep duration group and physical active group,logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratio(OR)of having overweight and obesity in short or long sleep duration groups and physically inactive group. Results As compared with normal sleep duration group,the prevalence of overweight and obesity in both men and women with short or long sleep duration was higher(the differences in some groups were not significant). Risk for obesity increased in the men with only 6 hours’sleep (OR=1.91,95% CI: 1.18～3.11)and the men with sleep duration less than 6 hours(OR=2.57,95% CI: 1.33～4.98). The women who slept longer than 9 hours a day also had higher risk for overweight when compared with the women with normal sleep duration (OR=1.90,95% CI: 1.00 ～3.61). As compared with physically active men,the OR for obesity and overweight was higher in inactive men (for obesity: OR=1.91,95% CI: 1.04 ～3.49;for overweight: OR=1.41,95% CI: 1.02 ～1.95),however,the difference was not significant in women. Conclusion Both short / long sleep duration and physical inactivity could be risk factors for obesity. Keeping appropriate sleep duration and increasing physical activity level could be effective for weight control.

Abstract:The conventional algorithms employed in electron microscope tomography require that the series of images obtained from different orientations of the specimen each represent a parallel orthographic projection under uniform magnification. Electron microscope optics can produce distortions in images that may affect the accuracy of a tomographic reconstruction. These distortions result in images with differential rotation and magnification of regions of a thick or highly tilted specimen located at different distances with respect to the plane of focus. The distortions increase in magnitude and may significantly affect the accuracy of the tomographic data when images are acquired under current center misalignment or non-eucentric positioning of the specimen. An additional source of error can be introduced if the condenser lenses are adjusted to compensate for the intensity attenuation due to the increased beam path length as the specimen is tilted. The change in beam crossover position due to adjustment of the condensers alters the beam divergence and may introduce systematic changes in magnification over the tilt series. The process of alignment of the tilt series will propagate these errors to more central regions of the image. In most cases, with proper consideration, it is possible to minimize these errors to levels where they will have negligible effects on the resolution of the tomographic reconstruction.

Abstract:Previous results demonstrated that progesterone (P4) given simultaneously with estradiol (E2) prevented stimulation by E2 of complement C3 expression in the immature rat uterus. Northern blot analysis revealed that simultaneous administration of P4 was able to prevent the E2-stimulated increase in C3 mRNA concentration in the luminal epithelial cells. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether progesterone modulates C3 expression after the gene has been induced by prior administration of E2 and also to determine the reversibility of this effect by the concomitant administration of RU38486, 17 beta-hydroxy-11 beta-[4-dimethylaminophenyl]estra-4,9,-dien-3-one (RU486). This regulation was studied by examination of protein synthesis as well as mRNA concentrations. Immature 21-day-old female rats were treated with E2 for 2 days (1 microgram/day), followed 24 h later by P4 (500 micrograms) or vehicle. Uteri were removed 6, 9, and 18 h after progesterone treatment and the radiolabeled secreted proteins were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and immunoprecipitation using a goat anti-rat C3 antibody. In animals treated with vehicle, E2-stimulated C3 synthesis remained elevated at 6 and 9 h and returned to control values by 18 h. In contrast, the administration of P4 resulted in a decrease in C3 synthesis at 6 and 9 h with the greatest decrease observed at 9 h. Similar results were obtained when C3 mRNA concentrations were examined. E2-stimulated C3 mRNA concentrations were decreased in rats treated with progesterone compared to those treated with vehicle alone.2

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies have shown a close association between trouble sleeping and obesity in older adults. However, no studies have explored the underlying mechanism of this relationship. The present study was designed to evaluate the roles of depressive symptoms and cognitive function in the association between trouble sleeping and obesity in older American adults.METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 2575 participants (≥60 years old) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 was used for analysis. Obesity, depressive symptoms, and cognitive function (including Established Consortium for Word Learning in Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-WL) (immediate learning and recall and delayed recall), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST)) were objectively measured, and trouble sleeping was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. The moderated mediation analysis was conducted by Hayes' PROCESS macro.RESULTS: Trouble sleeping was positively associated with obesity among older adults. Depressive symptoms partially and indirectly mediated this association, and DSST moderated the association between trouble sleeping and depressive symptoms. Trouble sleeping had a lower impact on depressive symptoms in older adults with higher cognitive function.LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional design prevents making causal inferences, and part of self-reported information was not objective enough.CONCLUSION: Cognitive function moderated the mediation of depressive symptoms on the indirect, positive association between trouble sleeping and obesity; hence, incorporating methods to strengthen cognitive function and alleviate depressive symptoms may help weak the link between trouble sleeping and obesity among older adults.

Abstract:The detrimental effects of obesity on sleep disorders have garnered a lot of interest. The weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) is a newly developed anthropometric index calculated in terms of weight and waist circumference. The body mass index has been employed to evaluate obesity in the majority of studies that connect obesity to sleep disorders. This study seeks to investigate the correlation between WWI and sleep disorders among adults in the United States. This cross-sectional study was part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included adults aged >20 from 2005 to 2008. This study investigated the linear relationship between sleep disorders and WWI using weighted binary logistic regression models. Nonlinear relationships were characterized using smooth curve fitting and threshold effects analyses. After that, based on variables like gender, age, marital status, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, subgroup analyses were performed. Our study included 9869 participants who were at least 20 years old. Higher WWI was linked to greater odds of sleep disorders prevalence, according to weighted binary logistic regression (odds ratio = 1.15; 95% confidence interval, 1.10, 1.20). In subgroup analyses based on age, marital status, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, this connection remained robust. However, there were notable differences in this connection depending on gender. Furthermore, a nonlinear correlation with inflection points between WWI and sleep disorders was shown using smooth curve fitting. The nonlinear association between WWI and sleep disorders has an inflection point of 8.1 cm/√kg, as indicated by the threshold effect analyses. A higher WWI exposure may elevate the odds of sleep disorder prevalence, underscoring the importance of considering WWI in the prevention and management of sleep disorders.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the association between sleep duration, sleep quality and the prevalence of hypertension in the elderly aged 65 years and above. Methods: This study was conducted among the elderly in communities in Yiwu, China from April to July, 2019, and participants were recruited through physical examination in the hospital. Face-to-face interview was performed to obtain basic information. Sleep duration and sleep quality were evaluated by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Associations between sleep duration, sleep quality and hypertension were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 3 169 elderly persons, aged ≥65 years old, were included in the study. The overall prevalence of hypertension was 50.8%. The elderly with very poor sleep quality and short sleep duration accounted for 22.4% and 28.5%, respectively. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, lifestyle and health status, the OR of hypertension for the elderly with very poor sleep quality was 1.42 (95%CI: 1.12-1.80) compared with those with very good sleep quality. Compared with the elderly with sleep duration of 6-7 h a night, the OR of hypertension for those with sleep duration <6 h was 1.37 (95%CI: 1.15-1.65). As the sleep quality decreased, the risk for hypertension increased. An U-shaped association was found between sleep duration and risk of hypertension. Subgroup analyses showed that this association existed in both men and women, but only significant in the elderly aged <75 years. Conclusion: Poor sleep quality and short sleep duration were associated with risk for hypertension in the elderly.

Abstract:STUDY OBJECTIVESTo examine the association between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children.METHODSA total of 48,922 3-year old children enrolled in the Jiaxing Birth Cohort, who provided sleep information and anthropometric data, were included in the present study as baseline and were followed up to 5 years of age. Sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 10 hours, 11-12 hours, and ≥ 13 hours. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the cut point criteria in China. Prevalence ratios and risk ratios were used to assess the association between sleep duration and risk of overweight/obesity.RESULTSIn cross-sectional analyses at baseline, the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight (with 11-12 h of sleep being considered the reference group) for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.13 (1.06-1.20) and 1.16 (1.09-1.24), respectively, whereas the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.25 (1.11-1.40) and 1.25 (1.11-1.42). In longitudinal analyses, the adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.48 (1.26-1.74) and 1.13 (0.96-1.34), while adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.77 (1.30-2.40) and 1.19 (0.85-1.66). Restricted cubic splines regression supported U-shaped curvilinear associations between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.CONCLUSIONSBoth short and overlong sleep duration are associated with a higher risk of overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children. Optimizing sleep duration may be an important modifiable intervention for overweight and obesity.

Abstract:To investigate the association of sleep duration with overweight and obesity among children aged 6 to 17 years in China, 2010–2012 data from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance (CNHHS) were analyzed. A total of 35,414 children were recruited in the survey. Body mass index (BMI) was converted into three categories: normal weight, overweight and obesity. In multinomial logistic regression model, sleep duration was divided into four groups: very short, short, recommended and long. In restricted cubic splines (RCS), sleep duration was examined as a continuous variable in relation to overweight and obesity. In the very short and short groups, sleep duration was a risk factor for obesity after adjusting for the potential impacts of age, gender, residence, family income, leisure sedentary behavior (SB) and leisure exercise, with OR (Odds Ratio) = 3.01 (95% CI (confidence interval): 2.19–4.15) and OR = 1.24 (95% CI: 1.14–1.35), respectively. The adjusted OR of overweight for short sleep duration relative to a recommended sleep duration was 1.17(95% CI: 1.09–1.26). No significant associations of very short sleep with overweight, of long sleep duration with overweight and obesity were found. The RCS curves between sleep duration and overweight and obesity were both inverted J-shaped. To conclude, the shorter the sleep duration, the higher the risk of overweight and obesity in children. Increasing sleep duration would have a positive effect on reducing overweight and obesity rates in Chinese children.

Abstract:Purpose: Research on the relationship between sleep duration and obesity defined using multiple anthropometric and bioelectrical indices in women remains scarce. We aimed to explore the association between sleep duration and body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), body fat percentage (PBF) and visceral fat area (VFA) among females. Methods: We recruited women for medical examination using multistage cluster sampling. Sleep was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and sleep duration was categorized into short (<7 h), optimal (7 <9 h) and long sleep (≥ 9 h). Weight and height were measured using a calibrated stadiometer. Waist circumference was manually measured. PBF, and VFA were estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle factors were also collected and included in the logistic regression models to explore the independent association between sleep duration and obesity defined by different indices. Results: A total of 7,763 women with a mean age of 42.6 ± 13.5 years were included. The percentage of women reporting short and long sleep was 10.3 and 13.4% respectively. The mean BMI, WHR, PBF and VFA were 23.07 ± 3.30 kg/m 2 , 0.78 ± 0.06, 32.23 ± 6.08% and 91.64 ± 35.97cm 2 , respectively. Short sleep was independently associated with 35% (95% CI: 1.05–1.75) increased odds of general obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/cm 2 ), and long sleep was associated with 18% (95% CI: 1.01–1.37) increased odds of visceral obesity (VFA > 100 cm 2 ). No association was observed between sleep deprivation or excessive sleep and high WHR or high PBF. Conclusion: In women, short sleep was associated with an increased odds of general obesity, whereas long sleep was associated with an increased odds of visceral obesity. Longitudinal observations are needed to confirm this cross-sectional relationship.

Abstract:Objective To examine the relationship between sleep and obesity in children 3 to 4 years old in Shanghai, China.Study design A total of 1311 Chinese children from 10 kindergarten classes in Shanghai, aged 3 to 4 years, who were participating in the kindergarten entrance health examination in 2000, were included in the study. Body weight and height were measured, and a questionnaire was given to the children's parents about sleep and physical and social characteristics of the children and their family. The main outcome measure was obesity, defined as body mass index (kg/m(2)) >= 95th percentile for the children.Results Compared with children reporting >= 11 hours of sleep per night, the odds ratio for childhood obesity was 4.76 (95% Cl, 1.28-17.69) for children with <9 hours of sleep, and 3.42 (95% Cl, 1.12-10.46) for children with 9.0 to 9.4 hours of sleep, after adjustment for age, sex, and other risk factors. Children with caregivers who slept less, who had mothers with higher education, or who co-slept with caregivers had less nighttime sleep than other children.Conclusion Short sleep duration is positively associated with obesity in preschool children, and short nighttime sleep duration is significantly related to bedtime and co-sleeping with caregivers. Sleep quality was assessed through the survey by inquiring if subjects experienced trouble sleeping. Sleep duration was categorized into normal (7-8 hours of sleep), short (< 7 hours of sleep), and long (>8 hours of sleep). Weight was categorized into normal weight, overweight, obese, and severely obese. Poisson regression and multinomial logistic regression analyses were used. Adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) and adjusted relative Risk Ratios (aRRR) with their 95% CI were reported. Results The total sample size was 16,939, with females comprising the majority (52%), and ages ranging from 20 to 80 years. Those with COPD were more likely to report trouble sleeping (aIRR 1.48, p < 0.001). Obese and severely obese groups were also associated with trouble sleeping (aIRR 1.27 and 1.50 respectively, p < 0.001). An increased likelihood of trouble sleeping (p < 0.001) was observed among individuals with COPD and overweight (aIRR 1.54), obesity (aIRR 1.89), and severe obesity (aIRR 1.97). COPD was also found independently associated with long sleep duration (IRR 1.50, p < 0.004); however, in the same model, severely obese groups were significantly associated with shorter sleep duration (aRRR: 1.39, p: 0.002). Conclusion In the current study, COPD was associated with long sleep duration and trouble sleeping. Increasing obesity was associated with short sleep duration and trouble sleeping, consistent with previous findings that sleep deprivation likely contributes to obesity. Support (if any)

Abstract:Background The relationship of insufficient sleep with the increased risk of obesity has been reported, but less is known about other sleep dimensions in the sleep-obesity associations. Objectives To assess the associations of multiple sleep dimensions with overall and abdominal obesity among Chinese students. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 10,686 Han students aged 9–18 from Chinese National Survey on Students’ Constitution and Health (CNSSCH). We collected sex, age, regions, parental educational levels, physical activity duration and sleep-related information by questionnaire survey, and also conducted anthropometric measurements including height, weight and waist circumference (WC). Unadjusted and adjusted binary logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations of sleep-related dimensions with obesity-related indicators. Results Short sleep duration was associated with higher body mass index (BMI), larger WC and higher waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in 9–12 and 16–18 age groups, whereas prolonged sleep duration on weekday was associated with higher BMI in 13–15 age group. Non-habitual midday napping and midday napping ≤0.5 h/d (vs 0.5 to 1 h/d) increased the risk of higher BMI in 13–15 age group, and the former was also associated with larger WC in 9–12 age group. Late bedtime was associated with larger WC and higher WHtR in 9–12 age group and with higher BMI and WHtR in 13–15 age group. Students aged 9–12 with social jet lag ≥2 h were found to have greater BMI after adjustment (Odds Ratio: 1.421; 95% confidence interval: 1.066–1.894). Conclusions Short or overlong sleep duration, late bedtime and great social jet lag were associated with higher prevalence of overall or abdominal obesity, while moderate midday napping can effectively decrease the risk. Those findings may assist in developing preventive strategies to combat obesity epidemic.

Abstract:Background Information on the relationship between sleep duration and obesity among children in urban Guangzhou, China is limited. This study aims to examine the relationship between sleep duration and obesity in children aged 6–18 years. Methods The sample consisted of 11,830 children aged 6–18 years. The children were randomly selected from 13 schools in three urban districts of Guangzhou. The study was conducted from September to November 2013. The height and weight of the children were measured. Adiposity status was estimated using body mass index and according to the cut point in China criteria. In the structured questionnaire, children reported daily sleep hours (less than 7 h, 7–9 h and more than 9 h), weekly food intake amount (including vegetables, fruit, sugar beverages and meat), physical activity and sedentary time. A caretaker would answer the questionnaire on behalf of a child aged below nine. Results A total of 8,760 children (49.0 % boys) completed the study. The prevalence of obesity was 8.4 % (9.8 % in boys and 5.7 % in girls). Adjusted for age, diet and physical activity/sedentary behaviour, the odds ratio (OR) for obesity comparing sleeping <7 h (short sleep duration, SSD) with ≥9 h (long sleep duration, LSD) was 0.70 (95 % CI: 0.69–0.72) among boys and 1.73 (95 % CI: 1.71–1.74) among girls. Stratified by age, OR for boys aged 6–12 years comparing SSD with LSD was 0.60 (95 % CI: 0.55–0.66); by contrast, OR was 1.33 (95 % CI: 1.30–1.37) for boys aged 13–18 years. Conclusion Short sleep duration is associated with increased chances of obesity among girls and 13- to 18-year-old boys, but the chances of obesity are decreased among 6- to 12-year-old boys. Age and gender should be regarded as specific characteristics for the effects of short sleep on obesity.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Obesity is a well-known risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), gaining interest due to the global rise in obesity and novel obesity drugs. The rationale behind this lies in the role of obesity in the pathophysiology of OSA. However, many OSA patients are non-obese, and the association between obesity and OSA may vary by age and sex. Past population studies largely reported the prevalence of OSA according to different obesity categories. In this study, we sought to determine the prevalence of obesity across different levels of OSA severity, age, and sex. Methods The analytic sample included individuals with OSA from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS). OSA severity was quantified using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI4; apneas plus hypopneas with at least 4% oxygen desaturation per hour). Individuals were stratified by the severity of OSA (mild: 5≤AHI4< 15; moderate: 15≤AHI4< 30; severe: AHI4≥30 events/hour), body mass index (BMI), age, and sex. Results A total of 2950 of 5749 participants in SHHS had OSA (AHI4≥5 events/hour; 1729/788/433 mild/moderate/severe). Of these, 40.6% were female; mean±SD age was 65.3±10.7 years; and median [interquartile range] BMI was 28.8 [25.8; 32.3] kg/m2. For those with any OSA, 60.6% were non-obese (BMI< 30 kg/m2) and 39.4% were obese (BMI≥30 kg/m2). Across OSA severities, 34.1% of mild, 42.6% of moderate and 54.3% of severe OSA were obese. A greater proportion of younger adults (< 65 years) with OSA were obese (48.3%) than older adults (≥65 years) with OSA (30.9%). In older adults 26.7% of mild, 34.5% of moderate and 40.3%of severe OSA were obese. Finally, a greater proportion of females with OSA were obese (43.6%) than males with OSA (36.5%). Conclusion The majority of middle-aged/older adults with OSA are non-obese. The association between obesity and OSA varies by age and sex, with a higher prevalence of obesity in younger adults and in females with OSA. Additional analyses of data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men study, and the HypnoLaus study are being conducted to establish the association between OSA and obesity within other community-based samples.
