Abstract:State-of-the-art Fenton-like reactions are crucial in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification. This review explores the latest advancements in heterogeneous metal-based catalysts within AOPs, covering nanoparticles (NPs), single-atom catalysts (SACs), and ultra-small atom clusters. A distinct connection between the physical properties of these catalysts, such as size, degree of unsaturation, electronic structure, and oxidation state, and their impacts on catalytic behavior and efficacy in Fenton-like reactions. In-depth comparative analysis of metal NPs and SACs is conducted focusing on how particle size variations and metal-support interactions affect oxidation species and pathways. The review highlights the cutting-edge characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, indispensable for deciphering the complex electronic and structural characteristics of active sites in downsized metal particles. Additionally, the review underscores innovative strategies for immobilizing these catalysts onto membrane surfaces, offering a solution to the inherent challenges of powdered catalysts. Recent advances in pilot-scale or engineering applications of Fenton-like-based devices are also summarized for the first time. The paper concludes by charting new research directions, emphasizing advanced catalyst design, precise identification of reactive oxygen species, and in-depth mechanistic studies. These efforts aim to enhance the application potential of nanotechnology-based AOPs in real-world wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation (e.g., fenton-like reagent oxidation and ozone oxidation) is a highly important technology that uses strong oxidizing free radicals to degrade organic pollutants and mineralize them. The fenton-like reactions have the characteristics of low cost, simple operation, thorough reaction and no secondary pollution. Fenton-like reagents refer to a strong oxidation system composed of transition metal ions (e.g., Fe3+, Mn2+ and Ag+) and oxidants (hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulfate, sodium persulfate, etc). Graphene and carbon nanotube possess a distinctive mechanical strength, flexibility, electrical and thermal conductivity and a very large specific surface area, which can work as an excellent carrier to disperse the catalyst and prevent its agglomeration. Fullerene can synergize with iron-based materials to promote the reaction of hydroxyl groups with organic pollutants and enhance the catalytic effect. Fenton-like catalysts influence the catalytic behavior by inducing electron transfer under strong interactions with the support. Due to the short lifespan of free radicals, the treatment effect is usually enhanced with the assistance of external conditions (ultraviolet and electric fields) to expand the application of fenton-like catalysts in water treatment. There are mainly light-fenton, electro-fenton and photoelectric-fenton methods. Fenton-like catalysts can be prepared by hydrothermal method, impregnation and coordination-precipitation approaches. The structures and properties of the catalysts are characterized by a variety of techniques, such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. In this paper, we review the mechanisms, preparation methods, characterizations and applications status of fenton-like reagents in industrial wastewater treatment, and summarize the recycling of these catalysts and describe prospects for their future research directions.

Abstract:Fenton reaction is particularly effective for mineralizing stubborn organic pollutants due to the high oxidation potential of •OH with the green end product of H2O. However, exogenous addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is usually accompanied by the high operation risks and economic costs along with the storage and transportation of H2O2. Besides, inefficient activation of H2O2 due to the rapid accumulation of Fe3+ and slow regeneration of Fe2+ constrains the efficiency. Hence, heterogeneous catalysts that overcome those limitations by in-situ regenerating and activating H2O2 with high efficiency in the Fenton-like processes are promising alternatives to the conventional Fenton reactions. In this review, we give an overall summarization on the single-atom catalysts (SACs) attempted in the Fenton-like processes recently, and discuss their potential roles in the wastewater contaminant alleviation. Firstly, a brief introduction is made on the basic principles of H2O2 generation and activation in the Fenton-like processes, and the coordination environment of SACs is emphasized. Then, a detailed discussion on how the type of central metal sites and their coordination environment influence the catalytic performance from three perspectives: H2O2 activation, selective H2O2 generation via 2e− oxygen reduction reaction, and bifunctional SACs for electro-Fenton. After that, the recent advances on SACs catalyzed Fenton-like processes in the contaminant removal are introduced, and the kinetic perspective, influence of water quality, the stability and long-term performance, as well as the mass transfer and reactor scale up are discussed, respectively. Finally, the major challenges for the applications in real wastewater treatment are outlooked.

Abstract:<p>The voluminous anthropogenic activities and non-regulated discharge of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants have led to deterioration of water quality characteristics and shortage of potable water. One of most ubiquitous problems is that the pharmaceutical pollutants are slowly developing resistance in pathogens, which increases the risks manifold. Conventional water treatment methods and technologies have been known to be inadequate for elimination of recalcitrant and emerging pollutants. Advanced oxidation processes have been exploited to the most for mineralizing the pollutants with some limitations especially toxic metal based catalysts and secondary pollution. However Fenton-based systems are considered to be safer as they utilize non-toxic chemicals. Homogeneous Fenton processes suffer from limitations as limited pH operational range, generation of Fe containing sludge etc. have shifted focus to heterogeneous systems. This review focusses on removal of pharmaceutical pollutants by homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton, electro-Fenton, sono-Fenton, photo-Fenton and photo-electro-Fenton processes using nano-catalysts. Various types of new pharmaceutical pollutants, their emergence, characteristics and toxicity have been discussed to have an insight into quantity and variety. New Fenton-like catalysts have been designed and used for degradation of pollutants and high mineralization is also achieved in a wide pH-range. In addition Fenton catalysts capable of showing high mineralization using solar light have been prepared by various methods with and without iron based materials. In addition in this review we have also focused on complexities related to removal of pharmaceutical effluents and how they are addressed by Fenton systems. The review aims to assist researchers and engineers to gain fundamental understandings and critical view of Fenton process and its optimization processes, and hopefully with the knowledge it could bring new opportunities for the optimization and future development of Fenton process. The key advances in Fenton catalysts are innovations in design of ligands, junction designing for effective radical generation, reaction engineering, hydro-dynamical effects and complete mineralization. The combinations and coupling of biological oxidation, semiconductor photocatalysis with Fenton process for high performance pharmaceutical pollutants removal in pilot-scale experiments have been discussed and evaluated.</p>

Abstract:The Fenton/Fenton-like reaction is an advanced oxidation process, which is widely recognized for its efficient removal of recalcitrant organic contaminants. In Fenton/Fenton-like oxidation systems, multivalent metals are important catalysts, such as Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, Ce, Ag, Cr, Ru, W, Mo, V, Ti, etc., which can activate H2O2 to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) by low-valent metal (Mn+) with reduction properties and high-valent metal (M(n+z)+) with oxidation properties due to the dual roles of H2O2 as reductant and oxidant. Moreover, Fenton/ Fenton-like oxidation is a radical reaction process, in which the redox reaction between multivalent metals and radicals may occur. Therefore, the conversion and recycle of valence state of multivalent metals are crucial in the production of ROS and the degradation of organic contaminants. In this review, the recent advances in the conversion and recycle valence states of multivalent metals, including Fe3+/Fe2+, Cu2+/Cu+, Co3+/Co2+, Mn4+/ Mn2+, Ce4+/Ce3+, Ru3+/Ru2+, Cr6+/Cr3+, Ti4+/Ti3+, Mo6+/Mo4+ and the like, were systematically reviewed. Firstly, the conversion and influencing factors of valence states of multivalent metals in Fenton processes were introduced; Secondly, the strategies for regenerating low-valent metals were summarized; Thirdly, the formation, determination methods and roles of high-valent metals in contaminant degradation were analyzed and discussed; Finally, the concluding remarks and future perspectives were proposed. This review could provide valuable information for the development of new catalysts of multivalent metals, deepen the understanding of the mechanisms of Fenton/Fenton-like processes and provide a reference for expanding the application of the multivalent metals catalytic Fenton/Fenton-like process in water and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Fenton process is the most popular for wastewater treatment among all available advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Numerous endeavors have been devoted to improving the oxidation efficiency of Fenton reaction in terms of promoting ·OH generation, accelerating iron redox cycle and extending applicable pH range. However, in addition to oxidation, coagulation and adsorption also simultaneously occur in the Fenton process, which play important role in the removal of pollutants. Rapid progress has revealed the synergistic effects of oxidation, coagulation and adsorption in the Fenton process, providing new ideas for the treatment of complex and refractory wastewater. Based on available studies, this review is the first to systematically summarize the research progress regarding the synergistic effects of oxidation, coagulation and adsorption in the integrated Fenton-based processes for wastewater treatment. The involved mechanism of the synergistic effects in different Fenton processes (homogeneous Fenton, heterogeneous Fenton and physical field-assistant Fenton coupling process) are critically reviewed. Furthermore, special attention has been paid to the representative applications of the synergistic effects in wastewater treatment (such as industrial organic wastewater, landfill leachate and heavy metal-organic complexes, etc.), particularly focusing on the operation parameters and removal performance. Finally, a conclusion of the review and subsequently, perspectives are given for possible research directions. We believe this review can provide useful information for researchers and end-users involved in the development and application of the Fenton process in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Fenton reaction is based on the hydroxyl radicals produced by ferrous iron (Fe2+) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which has been extensively studied for the degradation of emerging contaminants in water. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional Fenton reaction, such as working at acidic pH range, yielding iron-containing sludge, Fenton-like reaction has been developed, in which solid catalysts rather than dissolved Fe2+ are used. In this review, the current status of various Fe-based Fenton-like catalysts were systematically summarized, including (1) zero-valent iron (ZVI) and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI); (2) Iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, such as Fe3O4 (magnetite), γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite), α-Fe2O3 (hematite) and α-FeOOH (goethite); (3) Iron disulfide (FeS2), Iron oxychloride (FeOCl). This review mainly focused on the catalytic mechanisms and applications for degradation of emerging contaminants. Firstly, the principle and chemistry of Fenton-like reaction was briefly introduced; then the catalytic mechanisms of the Fe-based catalysts were discussed in detail, including carbon-supported Fe-based catalysts and bimetallic reactive center; thirdly, their applications for the degradation of emerging contaminants in water were summarized, including dyes, phenols, pharmaceutical active compounds, pesticides and other contaminants; finally, the concluding remarks and future perspectives were given. Fenton-like reaction is a promising technology for the removal of toxic organic pollutants from water and wastewater.

Abstract:Fenton reaction based on hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) is effective for environment remediation. Nevertheless, the conventional Fenton reaction has several disadvantages, such as working at acidic pH, producing iron-containing sludge, and the difficulty in catalysts reuse. Fenton-like reaction using solid catalysts rather than Fe2+ has received increasing attention. To date, Fe-based catalysts have received increasing attention due to their earth abundance, good biocompatibility, comparatively low toxicity and ready availability, it is necessary to review the current status of Fenton-like catalysts. In this review, the recent advances in Fe-based Fenton-like catalysts were systematically analyzed and summarized. Firstly, the various preparation methods were introduced, including template-free methods (precipitation, sol gel, impregnation, hydrothermal, thermal, and others) and template-based methods (hard-templating method and soft-templating method); then, the characterization techniques for Fe-based catalysts were summarized, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET), SEM (scanning electron microscopy)/TEM (transmission electron microscopy)/HRTEM (high-resolution TEM), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy)/Raman, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy etc.; thirdly, some important conventional Fe-based catalysts were introduced, including iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, zero-valent iron (ZVI) and iron disulfide and oxychloride; fourthly, the modification strategies of Fe-based catalysts were discussed, such as microstructure controlling, introduction of support materials, construction of core-shell structure and incorporation of new metal-containing component; Finally, concluding remarks were given and the future perspectives for further study were discussed. Co-catalysis strategy for low-oxidant-consumption Fenton-like chemistry: From theoretical understandings to practical applications and future guiding strategies

Abstract:Recently, great effects have been made for the co-catalysis strategy to solve the bottlenecks of Fenton system. A series of co-catalysis strategies using various inorganic metal co-catalysts and organic co-catalysts have been developed in various oxidant (i.e., hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and persulfate) systems with significantly promotion of catalytic performances and lower oxidant consumption (only 5-10 % of conventional Fenton/Fenton-like systems). However, the developments of these co-catalysis strategies from theoretical understandings to practical applications and future guiding strategies were overlooked, which was an essential problem that must be considered for the future scale-up applications of co-catalysis systems. In this paper, these co-catalysis strategies with low-oxidant-consumption characteristics have been reviewed by the comparison of their co-catalysis mechanisms, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. We also discussed the recent developments of amplifying devices based on the co-catalysis systems. The scale-up performances of co-catalysis strategies based on these amplifying devices have also been assessed. In addition, future guiding strategies for the development of co-catalysis strategy with low-oxidant-consumption characteristics have also been first time outlined by the combination of the technical-economic analysis (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA) and machine learning (ML). Finally, the paper systematically discusses the development opportunities, technical bottlenecks and future development directions of co-catalysis strategies with the prospect of large-scale applications. Basically, this work provides a systematic review on co-catalysis strategy with low-oxidant-consumption characteristic from theoretical understandings to practical applications and future guiding strategies.

Abstract:With the gradual increase in industrialization, more and more pollutant emissions has caused severe pollution of surface water. The scientific community has confirmed that advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are an effective measure to solve serious water pollution problems. Among the many AOPs, the photo-Fenton process has become an attractive alternative method for removing pollutants from water bodies due to its environmental friendliness, suitable price and wide range of applications. Iron-based materials widely using in the field of photo-Fenton catalysis due to their abundant reserves and low prices. On this basis, this paper focuses on reviewing the main advances in the catalytic oxidation of α-Fe2O3-based photo-Fenton materials for the treatment of refractory wastewater in recent years. We compared and analyzed the contemporary literature on the strategies to enhance the degradation efficiency of α-Fe2O3-based photo-Fenton catalysts by introducing oxygen vacancies, doping, and constructing multiphase catalysts. After that we proposed some strategies to optimize the performance of α-Fe2O3-based photo-Fenton catalysts, hoping to suggest new ideas for the future development of the field of photo-Fenton catalysis.

Abstract:The heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process has attracted tremendous interest as a promising advanced oxidation reaction to treat refractory organic contaminants in water. However, its practical application has been limited by unsatisfactory catalyst performance. Atomically dispersed metal catalysts are appealing for EF systems due to their high atomic utilization, intrinsic activity, and selectivity. In this review, we introduced the latest advances in metal-based single atom catalysts (SACs) for coordinating multiple oxygen reduction pathways in EF. First, we present a comprehensive summary of rational SAC design for selectively converting O2 to H2O2 and ultimately to •OH in successive reactions, as well as the associated mechanisms. Subsequently, we delve into the design and synthesis principles of diatomic catalysts (DACs), spotlighting their collaborative functions to direct selective O2 conversion to •OH. Finally, we concluded the review by discussing current challenges and further directions for the intelligent design of electrodes and reactors coupled with well-defined DACs for EF-based purification technologies.

Abstract:<p>Advanced oxidation process (AOP), with a high oxidation efficiency, fast reaction speed (relatively no secondary pollution), has become one of the core technologies of industrial wastewater and advanced drinking water treatment. Heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation process (HFOP) is a kind of AOP, which developed rapidly in recent years in such a way to overcome the disadvantages of traditional Fenton reaction. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives become essential heterogeneous catalysts for organics mineralization due to the large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and ease of structural regulation. However, the knowledge gap on the mechanism and the fate of heterogeneous catalyst species during organics degradation activities by MOFs presents considerable impediments, particularly for a wide application and scaling up the process. This work has the potential to provide guidance and ideas for researchers and engineers in the fields of environmental remediation, environmental catalysis and functional materials. This review focuses on clarifying the critical mechanism of •OH production from MOFs and derivatives as well as its action on the organic's degradation process. The recent developments in MOF based HFOP are compared, and more attention is paid for the following aspects in this review: (1) classifies systematically progressive modification methods of MOFs by chemical and physical treatments; (2) analyzes the fate of catalytic species during treating organic wastewater; (3) proposes design ideas and principles for improving the performance of MOFs catalysts; (4) discusses the main factors influencing the catalytic properties and practical application; (5) summarizes the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future.</p>

Engineered nanoconfinement activates Fenton catalyst at neutral pH: Mechanism and kinetics study

Abstract:We proposed to establish nanoscale spatially confined Fenton treatment architectures to overcome the catalyst deactivation issue frequently seen at neutral pH. We demonstrated this idea by growing four typical iron oxide catalysts (Fe 3 O 4 , FeOOH, CuFe 2 O 4 , and FeOCl), respectively inside the nanochannels of anodized aluminum oxide scaffold, wherein the confined space (≈5 nm) significantly accelerated heterogeneous Fenton treatment of organic pollutants, with up to 310 times kinetics enhancement under normalized surface area compared to the counterpart bulk reactions with suspension catalysts. Based on experimental and computational studies, we gained the mechanistic details on how did the nanoconfinement enhanced the protonation of surfaces driving the catalysis, and showed how much of its significance over other influencing factors on enhancing the treatment kinetics and a sustained catalysis. Our findings mark an important advance on developing nanoconfined Fenton treatment systems that enable efficient catalyst activation and maximal treatment kinetics, without additional chemicals or electro-/photo-energies.

Abstract:Novel single-atom catalysts (SACs) have become the frontier materials in the field of environmental remediation, specially, wastewater purification, because of their nearly 100% ultra-high atomic utilization and excellent properties. SACs used in Fenton-like catalytic reactions can activate various peroxides (such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ozone (O3), persulfate (PSs)) to release active radicals and non-radicals acting on target pollutants and realize their decomposition and mineralization. Among them, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in PSs system has gradually become one of the most concerned oxidants in Fenton-like process due to the asymmetry of molecular structure and the characteristics of easy storage and transportation. Focusing on a multiple of proposed strategies for the synthesis and performance regulation of Fenton-like SACs, it is confirmed that the coordination anchoring between isolated metal atoms and support/carrier enhances the structural robustness and chemical stability of the catalyst, and optimizes the catalytic activity and kinetics. Moreover, the adjustability of SACs coordination environment and electronic properties can improve other catalytic properties of the catalyst, such as cycle stability and selectivity. In order to systematically explain the relationship between active center, catalyst performance and the corresponding potential catalytic mechanism, this paper focuses on the representative scientific work on the preparation strategy, catalytic application and performance regulation of Fenton-like SACs. The typical Fenton-like SACs reaction processes and catalytic mechanisms for the degradation of refractory organic compounds in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were reviewed. Finally, the future development and challenges of Fenton-like SACs were prospected.

Regulating the Metal–Support Interaction: Double Jump to Reach the Efficiency Apex of the Fe–N4-Catalyzed Fenton-like Reaction

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) is one of the promising approaches toward addressing the global concerns on the threats of the emerging organic pollutants (EOPs). While due to the lack of understanding on the structure–activity relationship, it is challenging to rationally design a highly active and durable catalyst for the selective elimination of the EOPs. Herein, by a strategy of two-stage architecture engineering, a highly active and stable single-atom Fe catalyst for efficient pollutant degradation via Fe(IV)O oxidation is developed. The electronic property of the polymeric carbon nitride (CN) framework was, experimentally and theoretically, evidenced to impact the physiochemical properties of the single-atom Fe sites, that is, rising the C/N ratio in the CN support results in a positive shift of the valence states of single-atom Fe sites and a favorable thermodynamic process of the Fe(IV)O formation. On the optimum catalyst, bisphenol A (BPA) with a high concentration of 91.2 ppm can be rapidly removed within 120 s in a batch reactor under mild reaction conditions; meanwhile, the catalyst exhibits a record high stability in a fixed-bed flow reactor, for example, 124 h reaction on stream with 100% BPA removal, which corresponds to a capacity of 74.4 L per gram catalyst for treating polluted water with 22.8 ppm BPA.

Abstract:Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (e-Fenton) is considered a prospective technology for persistent organic contaminants removal that relies on the strongly oxidizing •OH. However, the efficiency of e-Fenton is still low as the sluggish Fe(II) regeneration caused by the difficulty modulating the electronic structure of Fe(III) center. Herein, the Fe-doped oxidized carbon nanotube catalysts (OCNT-Fe) is prepared to accelerate Fe(II) regeneration by introducing electronegative oxygen-containing groups and inducing local charge distribution of Fe(III) center. The OCNT-1Fe exhibits an excellent e-Fenton performance for phenol degradation with a kinetic rate of 0.11 min −1 at pH 6.5, which is the highest among reported state-of-the-art e-Fenton catalysts. Moreover, OCNT-1Fe catalyst is demonstrated to be more energy efficient in coking wastewater treatment with an energy consumption of 6.5 kW h kg COD − 1 than other e-Fenton systems of 9.2–29.7 kW h kg COD − 1 . This work offers a new perspective on the high-performance e-Fenton catalysts design by rationally modulating the electronic structure for organic pollutants removal.

Abstract:As an electrochemical advanced oxidation process, the electro-Fenton (EF) process has gained significant importance in the treatment of wastewater and persistent organic pollutants in recent years. As recently reported in a bibliometric analysis, the number of scientific publications on EF have increased exponentially since 2002, reaching nearly 500 articles published in 2022 (Deng et al., 2022). The influence of the main operating parameters has been thoroughly investigated for optimization purposes, such as type of electrode materials, reactor design, current density, and type and concentration of catalyst. Even though most of the studies have been conducted at a laboratory scale, focusing on fundamental aspects and their applications to degrade specific pollutants and treat real wastewater, important large-scale attempts have also been made. This review presents and discusses the most recent advances of the EF process with special emphasis on the aspects more closely related to future implementations at the large scale, such as applications to treat real effluents (industrial and municipal wastewaters) and soil remediation, development of large-scale reactors, costs and effectiveness evaluation, and life cycle assessment. Opportunities and perspectives related to the heterogeneous EF process for real applications are also discussed. This review article aims to be a critical and exhaustive overview of the most recent developments for large-scale applications, which seeks to arouse the interest of a large scientific community and boost the development of EF systems in real environments.

Abstract:Water pollution is currently one of the major problems that the scientific community must solve in the twenty-first century. This issue is made even more challenging by the fact that conventional effluent treatment processes usually show poor degradation performance for a variety of recalcitrant chemical components, remaining present after simple treatments. In this scenario, advanced oxidative processes emerge as a possible solution. Due to their simplicity, the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes have attracted the attention of the scientific community for decades. This review presents a critical analysis of the feasibility of these processes for full-scale diffusion. Seeking to elucidate this point, a broad review of the literature on Fenton and photo-Fenton processes is carried out, focusing on homogeneous processes, in the last two decades (2000–2021). With this review, the authors intend to fill part of the gap of studies in the literature about the potential applicability of scaling up the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes. Fundamentals, characteristics, process parameters, chemical and photochemical reactor designs, and scale-up challenges are examined in detail. Examples of applications of these oxidative processes in pilot and full-scale conditions are presented. Finally, this review concludes with current trends and future perspectives with the aim of helping researchers in the field to direct their topics and contribute to further development of scale-up studies in advanced oxidative processes, especially with Fenton reactions.

Abstract:Fenton processes based on the reaction between Fe2+ and H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, have been widely studied and applied for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants in wastewater due to its high efficiency, mild condition and simple operation. However, H2O2 is usually added by bulk feeding, which suffers from the potential risks during the storage and transportation of H2O2 as well as its low utilization efficiency. Therefore, Fenton/Fenton-like processes with in-situ production of H2O2 have received increasing attention, in which H2O2 was in-situ produced through O2 activation, then decomposed into hydroxyl radicals by Fenton catalysts. In this review, the in situ production of H2O2 for Fenton oxidation was introduced, the strategies for activation of O2 to generate H2O2 were summarized, including chemical reduction, electro-catalysis and photo-catalysis, the influencing factors and the mechanisms of the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in various Fenton/Fenton-like processes were analyzed and discussed, and the applications of these processes for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants were summarized. This review will deepen the understanding of the tacit cooperation between the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in Fenton process, and provide the further insight into this promising process for degradation of emerging contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Spent resins generated from the nuclear industrial processes are still difficult to be treated and disposed. Fenton-like processes have great application potential in the treatment of spent resins, but the Fenton reaction mechanisms and resin degradation pathways remain challenging. In this study, nanoscale Fe0/Cu0 bimetallic catalysts were prepared and characterized for the Fenton-like degradation of the mixture of cationic and anionic resins. High catalytic property of Fe0/Cu0 bimetallic nanoparticles activated by H2O2 was evaluated, according to the effects of various nanoparticles, temperature, catalyst amount, H2O2 concentration and the mixing ratio of cationic and anionic resins. Combined the shape and color changes of mixed resins with the experimental and calculated characterization results, different degradation difficulty of cationic and anionic resins and their degradation mechanisms were studied. According to the density functional theory calculations of the optimized resin molecules with the Fe0/Cu0 catalyst, the mechanisms of Fenton-like reactions and the degradation of mixed resins through the synergistic effect of Fe and Cu species were proposed. The comprehensive Fenton-like reactions and degradation mechanisms provide new insights to advance the treatment of spent resins and organic polymers by Fenton-like processes.
