Abstract:The structure of the title compound, 2,3-dihydroxysuccinic acid monohydrate, C4H6O6.H2O, (I), was first determined (to R = 0.22) and reported by Parry [Acta Cryst. (1951), Acta Cryst. 4, 131-138]. We present here a redetermination with significantly improved accuracy. In the centrosymmetric crystals (space group P(1) over bar, Z = 2), the enantiomeric molecules with both D- and L-configurations co-exist. An extensive intermolecular hydrogen-bond system involves hydrogen bonds formed by carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of the tartaric acid molecule, as well as the crystalline water molecule.
How to Deal with Charge in the Ranking of Lewis Acidity: Critical Evaluation of an Extensive Set of Cationic Lewis Acids

Abstract:The quantification of Lewis acidity is of fundamental and applied importance in chemistry. However, if neutral and charged Lewis acids are compared, a coherent ranking has been elusive, and severe uncertainties were accepted. With this study, we present a systematic computational analysis of Lewis base affinities of 784 mono-, di- and tricationic Lewis acids and their comparison with 149 representative neutral Lewis acids. Evaluating vacuum fluoride ion affinities (FIA) reveals a charge-caused clustering that prohibits any meaningful ranking. Instead, solvation-corrected FIAsolv is identified as a metric that overcomes charge sensitivity in a balanced manner, allowing for a coherent evaluation of Lewis acidity across varying charge states. Analyzing the impact of molecular volume on solvation-induced FIA damping provides rationales for fundamental trends and guidelines for the choice or design of neutral and cationic Lewis acids in the condensed phase. Exploring alternative scales, explicit counteranion effects, and selected experimental case studies reaffirms the advantages of solvation-corrected FIAsolv as the most versatile and practical approach for the quantitative ranking of general (thermodynamic) Lewis acidity.

Abstract:Using the principle that constrained conformational spaces can generate novel and hidden molecular properties we challenged the commonly held perception that a single-centered Lewis acid reacting with a single-centered Lewis base always forms a single Lewis adduct. Accordingly, the emergence of single-centered but multiple Lewis acidity among sterically hindered and non-symmetric triaryl-boranes is reported. These Lewis acids feature several diastereotopic faces providing multiple binding sites at the same Lewis acid center in the interaction with Lewis bases giving rise to adducts with diastereomeric structures. We demonstrate that with a proper choice of the base, atropisomeric adduct species can be formed that interconvert via dissociative mechanism rather than conformational isomerism. The existence of this exotic and peculiar molecular phenomenon was experimentally confirmed by the formation of atropisomeric piperidine–borane adducts using state-of-the-art NMR techniques in combination with computational methods.

Lewis-acid mediated reactivity in single-molecule junctions

Abstract:Recent work has shown that solution-based chemical reactions at a gold electrode can be monitored using molecular conductance and driven by extrinsic stimuli, such as an electric field or electrochemical potential. However, the intrinsic properties of the nanostructured interface may be expected to play important additional functions that are not yet well understood. Here we study single-molecule junctions formed from components having the same molecular backbone functionalized with 12 different sulfur-based linker groups to determine the influence of sulfur-substituent on junction conductance and stability. Remarkably, we find evidence for in situ S–C(sp3) bond breaking, and C(sp2)–C(sp3) bond forming, reactions that are consistent with the ex situ transformations expected for those systems in the presence of a Lewis acid. We also find we approach the limits of substituent influence on the conductance of physisorbed sulfur-bound junctions. As an illustrative example, we show that a tert-butylthio-functionalized 4,4’-biphenyl precursor can form both chemisorbed (Au−S) junctions, consistent with heterolytic S−C(sp3) bond cleavage to generate the stable tert-butyl carbocation, as well as physisorbed junctions that are >1 order of magnitude lower than analogous junctions comprising cyclic “locked” thioether contacts. Our findings are supported by a systematic analysis of model thioether components comprising different simple hydrocarbon substituents of intermediate size, which do not form chemisorbed contacts and further clarify the inverse relationship between conductance and substituent steric bulk. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory also confirm that bulky sulfur-substituents increase the probability of forming junction geometries with reduced electronic coupling between the electrode and π-conjugated molecular backbone. Together, this work helps to rationalize the dual roles that linker molecular structure and metal electrode Lewis character play in mediating interfacial reactions in break-junction experiments. The insights provided may be applied to advance our understanding of heterogeneous chemical processes or develop new molecular electronic components with improved or novel functionality.

Abstract:Aluminum reagents are widely used as strong Lewis acids for organic transformations and catalysis. In recent years, a variety of Al‐Lewis superacids could be accessed by preparation of aluminum cations paired with weakly‐coordinating anions or by use of perfluorinated substituents at the metal. While the majority of these Al‐Lewis superacids is composed of a tricoordinate Al‐metal atom, examples for dicoordinate Al species are very scarce. In this study, we report the preparation of [(Mes*)Al(H)(OEt2)]+[Al(ORF)4]− (Mes* = 2,4,6‐tBu3‐C6H2, RF = C(CF3)3) by reaction of protonated ether [H(OEt2)2]+[Al(ORF)4]− with [Mes*AlH2]2. Structural analysis supported by computed frontier orbitals and atomic charges reveals that the cation is best described as diethylether adduct of dicoordinate [(Mes*)Al(H)]+ and acts as synthon to this low‐coordinate cation. To incorporate the masking of the coordination site by the ether, the enthalpy of dissociation is included in the computed fluoride‐ and hydride ion affinities (XIA) and entropic effects are treated by defining a "free ion affinity" (fXIA), basing on the Gibbs energy change. Hereby, the Lewis acidity of free Lewis acids as well as their solvent adducts can be estimated.

Abstract:The empirical Lewis picture of the chemical bond dominates the view chemists have of molecules, of their stability and reactivity. Within the mathematical framework of quantum mechanics, all this chemical information is hidden in the many-particle wave function Ψ. Thus, to reveal and understand it, there is great interest in enhancing the Lewis model and connecting it to computable quantities. As has previously been shown, the Lewis picture can often be recovered from the probability density |Ψ|2 with probabilities in agreement with valence bond weights: the structures appear as most likely positions in the all-electron configuration space. Here, we systematically expand this topological probability density analysis to molecules with multiple bonds and lone pairs, employing correlated Slater-Jastrow wave functions. In contrast to earlier studies, non-Lewis structures are obtained that disagree with the prevalent picture and have a potentially better predictive capability. While functional groups are still recovered with these ab initio structures, the boundary between bonds and lone pairs is mostly blurred or non-existent. In order to understand the newly found structures, the Lewis electron pairs are replaced with spin-coupled electron motifs as the fundamental electronic fragment. These electron motifs-which coincide with Lewis' electron pairs for many single bonds-arise naturally from the generally applicable analysis presented. An attempt is made to rationalize the geometry of the newly-found structures by considering the Coulomb force and the Pauli repulsion.

Abstract:Molecules bearing carboxylic acid, amide, and hydroxyl groups are ubiquitous in crystal engineering, where robust hydrogen-bonded synthons centred on these functionalities enable reliable crystal structure design. We now show that halogen bonding to the carbon π-system of such molecules, traditionally ignored in crystal engineering, permits the recognition and directional assembly of the resulting hydrogen-bonded structural subunits, leaving the archetypal hydrogen-bonded ring, ladder, and chain homosynthons intact, but repositioned in space. When applied to heteromolecular synthons, this enables rearranging more complex hydrogen-bonded motifs and the evolution of binary cocrystals into ternary ones through "latent" carbon-based recognition sites, demonstrating a rational approach to build higher-order solid-state supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract:<p>Regulating the reactivity of nucleophiles is important in synthetic chemistry. As a weaker nucleophile is also a stronger Brønsted acid, it can be selectively deprotonated by a Brønsted base to give an anionic species that shows higher reactivity. Following this idea, the reactivity of nucleophiles can be controlled by using an appropriate Lewis acid/Brønsted base pair catalyst. Cuprous/aminolithium catalyzed hydrofunctionalization of acrylonitrile with an alcohol and an amine were chosen as model reactions. As the acidity of the alcohol is significantly higher than that of amine, the former is more easily deprotonated. Therefore, an alcohol shows higher reactivity than an amine in the presence of a Lewis acid/Brønsted base pair catalyst, reversing the selectivity trend.</p>

Abstract:We report the illumination of the exotic and peculiar molecular phenomenon of single-centered, but multiple Lewis acidity for triaryl boranes with fine-tuned steric effects and appropriate symmetry design. The existence of this unique molecular property was indirectly confirmed by the formation of B(sp3)–N(sp3) atropisomeric piperidine–borane adducts using state-of-the-art NMR techniques in combination with computational methods. Additional 19F EXSY experiments also revealed that these sterically strained piperidine–borane adducts display conformational interconversions, which take place via dissociative rather than rotameric mechanism.

Abstract:[reaction: see text] A combination of NMR, IR, and ab initio techniques reveals the striking structural similarities of an exemplary H-bonded complex of an N-acyloxazolidinone with an N,N'-disubstituted electron-poor thiourea and the corresponding Lewis acid complex. Although the H-bond association constant is lower than for the Lewis acid adduct, Diels-Alder reactions are accelerated and stereochemically altered in a fashion similar to weak Lewis acids.

Abstract:Understanding acid-base regulation is often reduced to pigeonholing clinical states into categories of disorders based on arterial blood sampling. An earlier ambition to quantitatively explain disorders by measuring production and elimination of acid has not become standard clinical practice. Seeking back to classical physical chemistry we propose that in any compartment, the requirement of electroneutrality leads to a strong relationship between charged moieties. This relationship is derived in the form of a general equation stating charge balance, making it possible to calculate [H+] and pH based on all other charged moieties. Therefore, to validate this construct we investigated a large number of blood samples from intensive care patients, where both data and pathology is plentiful, by comparing the measured pH to the modeled pH. We were able to predict both the mean pattern and the individual fluctuation in pH based on all other measured charges with a correlation of approximately 90% in individual patient series. However, there was a shift in pH so that fitted pH in general is overestimated (95% confidence interval -0.072-0.210) and we examine some explanations for this shift. Having confirmed the relationship between charged species we then examine some of the classical and recent literature concerning the importance of charge balance. We conclude that focusing on the charges which are predictable such as strong ions and total concentrations of weak acids leads to new insights with important implications for medicine and physiology. Importantly this construct should pave the way for quantitative acid-base models looking into the underlying mechanisms of disorders rather than just classifying them.

Abstract:The study of soft and condensed matter, specifically liquid crystals, has a rich history that spans from world wars to modern virtual reality. Liquid crystal materials are utilized in various applications such as displays, sensors, and more. Additionally, studying the unique properties of these anisotropic materials is intriguing. Our team of researchers is dedicated to creating sustainable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective organic materials. To achieve this goal, we focus on designing and synthesizing organic liquid crystals. An area we find fascinating is the creation of hydrogen-bonded liquid crystal supramolecular structures. Aromatic carboxylic acids are at the forefront of realizing hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals. The impact of alkyl/alkyloxy groups and substituents on acid's proton donating ability and acidic nature, contributing to mesomorphism, is fascinating. When alkyl/alkyloxy substituted benzoic acids interact with proton acceptors through hydrogen bonding, it causes significant variations in liquid crystalline phases obtained in the new supramolecules. This systematic review categorizes how electron-donating chains in alkyl/alkoxy-substituted benzoic acids contribute to mesomorphism, while electron-withdrawing substituents in non-mesogenic benzoic acids affect mesomorphism. The report discusses a detailed update of various donor acid moieties about their structure-LC phase correlation, with DFT calculations used to determine the H-bond length that supports the observations.

Abstract:Common Lewis superacids often suffer from low thermal stability or complicated synthetic protocols, requiring multi-step procedures and expensive starting materials. This prevents their large-scale application. Herein, the easy and comparably cheap synthesis of high-purity aluminium tris(fluorosulfate) ([Al(SO 3 F) 3 ] x , AFS) is presented. All starting materials are commercially available and no work-up is required. The superacidity of this thermally stable, polymeric Lewis acid is demonstrated using both theoretical and experimental methods. Furthermore, its synthetic and catalytic applicability, e.g. in bond heterolysis reactions and C−F bond activations, is shown.

Abstract:A superhalogen $\rm{F@C_{20}(CN)_{20}}$ and a corresponding Brønsted superacid were designed and investigated on DFT and DLPNO-CCSD(T) levels of theory. Calculated compounds have outstanding electron affinity and deprotonation energy, respectively. We consider superacid $\rm{H[F@C_{20}(CN)_{20}]}$ to be able to protonate molecular nitrogen. The stability of these structures is discussed, while some of the previous predictions concerning Brønsted superacids of record strength are doubted.

Abstract:In this work, we study the chemical bond in molecules containing heavy and super‐heavy elements according to the current state‐of‐the‐art bonding models. An Energy Decomposition Analysis in combination with Natural Orbital for Chemical Valence (EDA‐NOCV) within the relativistic four‐component Dirac‐Kohn‐Sham (DKS) framework is employed, which allows to successfully include the spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) effects on the chemical bond description.Simple halogen‐bonded adducts ClXL (X=At, Ts; L= NH3, Br‐, H2O, CO) of astatine and tennessine have been selected to assess a trend on descending along a group, while modulating the ClXL bond features through the different electronic nature of the ligand L. Interesting effects caused by SOC have been revealed: i) a huge increase of the ClTs dipole moment (which is almost twice as that of Cl At), ii) a lowering of the ClX...L bonding energy arising from different contributions to the ClX...L interaction energy strongly depending on the nature of L, iii) a quenching of one of the π back‐donation components to the bond. In the ClTs(CO) adduct, the back‐donation from ClTs to CO becomes the most important component. The analysis of the electronic structure of the ClX dimers allows for a clear interpretation of the SOC effects in these systems.

Abstract:A bidentate boron Lewis acid based on 1,8‐diethynylanthracene has been studied in detail with respect to its adduct formation with diamines and diphosphanes of different linker lengths between the donor functions. A clear correlation between the linker length of the bifunctional base and the formation of 1:1 adducts, 1:2 adducts or oligomers was found. The adducts were characterized in solution by NMR titration experiments and structurally by X‐ray diffraction. In addition, adduct formation and competition experiments of the host system with ZR3 (Z = N, P; R = H, Me) demonstrated the generally higher stability of alkylphosphane adducts compared to alkylamine adducts with boron functions. The results provide a general insight into the adduct formation of bidentate Lewis acids with guests of different sizes as well as the differences in stability between borane‐amine and borane‐phosphane adducts.

Abstract:Due to their molecular topology, atropisomers serve as highly valuable chiral frameworks for diverse applications across academic research and industry. Despite the availability of numerous established catalytic methods for their synthesis, there is still a high demand for the development of novel and resourceful strategies. In this concept article, we will detail our studies on the use of transient Lewis acid‐base interactions (LABI) as a dynamization strategy for the synthesis of (hetero)biaryl atropisomers by Dynamic Kinetic Resolution (DKR). The formation of cyclic transition states, resulting from the interaction between an acidic functionality and a basic counterpart, plays a key role in facilitating racemization by substantially reducing the barrier to atropisomerization. In this scenario, we have employed transformations aimed at neutralizing the acidic nature of the Lewis acid, ultimately leading to the formation of configurationally stable enantioenriched compounds. The design of substrates and the employment of stereoselective strategies based on transition metal and biocatalysis for their resolution is detailed. Specific emphasis on the preparation of axially chiral motifs commonly found in catalysis or medicinal chemistry will also be given.

Abstract:New Lennard-Jones plus point charge models are developed for alkaline-earth cations. The cation parameters are adjusted to the reduced liquid solution density of aqueous alkaline-earth halide salt solutions at a temperature of 293.15 K and a pressure of 1 bar. This strategy is analogous to the one that was recently used for developing models for alkali and halide ions so that both model families are compatible. The force fields yield the reduced liquid solution density of aqueous alkaline-earth halide solutions in good agreement with experimental data over a wide range of salinity. Structural microscopic properties (i.e. radial distribution function and hydration number) are predicted in good agreement with experimental and quantum chemical data. The same holds for dynamic properties (i.e., hydration dynamics, self-diffusion coefficient and electric conductivity). Finally, the enthalpy of hydration of the salts in aqueous solution was favorably assessed.

Abstract:A 3D linear scaling relationconnecting elementary 2-butanol C–O bond activation enthalpy, pyridine adsorption enthalpy, and the affinity of metal–oxygen site pairs to hydroxyls as reflected in the interaction enthalpy differenceis established here with combined kinetic and chemical titration techniques, allowing for accurate quantitative assessments of the Lewis acid strength even at low site densities in structurally complex metal oxides and nitrides. This construction is a kinetic-thermodynamic free energy relationusing the measured pyridine adsorption enthalpy as a functional descriptor for the electronic chemical potential of the Lewis site (μMO), one could reliably predict its 2-butanol dehydration turnover rate and vice versa. These relations allow for a rapid assessment of the Lewis acid strength on ill-defined solid acid catalysts especially on surfaces containing structural defects with low site densities and those that dynamically reconstruct.

Abstract:This article presents crystal structures of chalcogenadiazolecarboxylic acids bearing both a hydrogen and a chalcogen bond donor. The selected molecules varied in the size of the aromatic unit, the chalcogen atom and/or the position of the carboxyl group in the core structure. The most common synthons in their lattice are R 2 2 (8) self-complementary acid dimers or four-membered [Ch⋯N] 2 rings. Supramolecular synthons where chalcogenadiazole moieties interact with the carboxyl group were also identified. Both ESP calculations and experimental data showed that all the studied molecules adopted flat conformations, but only in the case of three crystal structures were flat sheets observed. To assess the contribution of hydrogen and chalcogen bonds to the stabilization of the crystal structure, crystal lattice energy calculations were performed.
