Abstract:Introduction: Heavy metals (HMs) accumulated in the road dust may be transferred to the surrounding land and water bodies and pose ecological risks. Hence, such pollution should be considered, especially in coastal roads. This study focuses on the HMs pollution of dust settled on the surface of coastal roads along the Persian Gulf in Bandar Abbas city. Materials and Methods: In this study, road dust samples were collected from 13 points in coastal roads and analyzed by ICP-OES for the measurement of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Pb. Based on the HMs contents of dust, pollution, and ecological risk indices, including contamination factor (CF), modified pollution index (MPI), and modified ecological risk index (MRI) were calculated. Results: Among the studied HMs, Cu (4.73) showed the highest CF value. The levels of MPI showed that the road dust was strongly polluted by HMs (4.02), but it was mainly contributed by a low toxic metal (Cu). Therefore, the mean value of MRI was 132.3, indicating the low ecological risk of such pollution. Note that the MRI value was > 150 in some sampling points, indicating moderate ecological risk. Conclusion: This study showed that the road dust along the Persian Gulf coastline is polluted to different levels of the studied HMs and may pose various levels of ecological risks. The current level of HMs pollution in the study area was not significantly high. However, high pollution levels in the west roads should not be overlooked.
Health risk assessment associated to heavy metal pollution levels in Mediterranean environment soils: a case study in the watershed of Sebkhet Ariana, Tunisia

Abstract:We measured the concentrations of 9 heavy metals (Fe, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni) in the soils collected in the watershed of Sebkhet Ariana (Tunisia) and assessed health risks for residential adults and children. Also, we assessed their potential sources, contamination status, and ecological risks using pollution indicators such as the enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), ecological risk (RI), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risk index (CRI) to both children and adults. Heavy metal concentrations followed the order Fe > Zn > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cu > Co > Cd > Hg. Geoaccumulation index, contamination factor, and enrichment factor results indicated that watershed of Sebkhet Ariana was polluted with Cd, Hg, and Pb due to use of pesticides and fertilizers and industrial wastewater reuse. Also, the study region had "high potential ecological risk" for Cd, whereas "low potential ecological risk" for the other heavy metals. Factor and hierarchical cluster analyses revealed that Ni, Hg, and Cu were from anthropogenic sources; Cd, Cr, and Co from both anthropogenic and natural sources; while other heavy metals from natural sources. The hazard index and the carcinogenic risk of HMs in adults' group revealed an acceptable level; however, children's group faced a great chance of carcinogenic risk by Cr and Ni moreover non-carcinogenic risk due to high level of Co.

Abstract:In order to investigate concentrations, variability, sources, and human health risk of trace elements, 38 atmospheric dust samples were collected around Arak industrial area. The average concentrations of Cd~Zn, As, and Pb were 3.3, 2.5, and 2.4 times higher than the corresponding geochemical background, respectively, while concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, and Hg were lower. Based on geo-accumulation index (Igeo), trace elements were classified between practically uncontaminated to moderate contaminated levels. The potential risk (RI) map showed that about 86% of the study area for all trace elements was in the moderate risk class. According to the results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, four factors were extracted for trace elements, including industrial sources, natural sources, mining, and transportation, that contributed about 30, 27, 26, and 17% to pollution of the area, respectively. The carcinogenic risks for inhalation exposure to Cd, As, Ni, and Co were lower than the permissible risk limit than the EPA recommend (10−6), indicating an acceptable level of risk. Results of the health risk evaluation indicated that the non-carcinogenic health risk (i.e., hazard quotient, HQ) for children and adults decrease following: As > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cd > Cu > Co > Hg. When excluding As, the hazard index (HI) was lower than the safe level (HI < 1) for all the trace elements, whereas HQ values of As for children and adults were 17.1 and 1.6, respectively, indicating a potential risk for children. In sum, several remedial actions to eliminate or to reduce the dust pollution are urgently required in the industrial area of Arak.

Abstract:Abstract Due to urbanization and industrialization, there has been an increase in solid waste generation and has become a global concern and leakage of leachate from landfills contaminate the soil and groundwater and hence can have a severe impact on human health. The present study aimed to determine the composition of toxic metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, As) and heavy metals (Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb) in soil and water by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). To ensure accuracy during the analysis of Cr, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, Ba, Hg, and Pb in real samples, certified reference material (CRM, SRM 2709a) of San Joaquin soil and water (SRM 1640a) were analyzed and results were presented in terms of % recovery studies. The mean concentration of all the metals in soil and water did not exceed the limit set by the European Community (EU), WHO, and US EPA except Cu where the permissible limit defined by the EU is 50–140 mg/kg in soil. The soil is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with respect to all metals except the Cu and Pb. Among the average daily dose (ADD) of soil, ADD ing and ADD inh for children had the maximum dose for all metals than adults while ADD derm was higher in adults. Hazard quotient (HQ) trend in both adults and children was found in order HQ ing > HQ derm > HQ inh of soil for all metals except Ba which followed HQ ing > HQ inh > HQ derm . Hazard index (HI) values of soil for Cr and Pb in children were 7 and 7.5 times higher than adults respectively. Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) value for Cr by different exposure pathways of soil was 5.361 × 10 −4 for children which are at the lower borderline of risk for cancer.

Abstract:Dust is regarded as an important pathway of heavy metal(loid)s to the human body. Health risks posed by metal(loid)s from household dust are of particular concern. However, the contamination and sources of heavy metal(loid)s in household dust environments, as well as source identification of health risks related to heavy metal(loid)s from household dust for vulnerable populations such as children, have not been thoroughly studied in China, particularly for the areas involved with industrial activities such as ore mining. Thus, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area famous for Pb/Zn ore mining, to assess the pollution sources and health risks of heavy metal(loid)s from household indoor and outdoor dust and to identify the contribution of household dust to the health risks for children. The results indicated that household environment was heavily contaminated by metal(loid)s, which were mainly attributed to mining activity. Meanwhile, the indoor/outdoor ratio and the redundancy analysis indicated that there were other pollution sources in indoor environments such as coal combustion, materials for interior building and decoration. Vapor inhalation was the main exposure pathway for Hg, while ingestion was the predominant pathway for other metal(loid)s. Although the cancer risks were relatively low, the HIt from household indoor and outdoor dust (2.19) was about twice the acceptable limit (1) and was primarily from Pb (64.52%) and As (23.42%). Outdoor dust was a larger contributor to the HI of Sb, As, Cr, Cd, Zn and Pb, which accounted for 51.37%, 58.63%, 52.14%, 59.66%, 52.87% and 64.47%, respectively, and the HIt was mainly from outdoor dust (60.76%). These results indicated that non-cancer health risks were largely from outdoor dust exposure, and strengthened the notion that concern should be given to the potential health risks from metal(loid)s in household dust both originating from mining activity and indoor environmental sources.

Abstract:Heavy metals are a common class of toxic contaminants in soil, water and air, yet their occurrence in indoor environments is less known. Heavy metals enter people's bodies through ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact, causing various diseases and even cancer. Here we review the concentrations, sources, influencing factors and hazards of heavy metals in indoor and outdoor dust. The average concentration of indoor metals in 23 samples from 19 regions is 509.5 ± 886.2 mg kg −1 for zinc, 149.0 ± 136.2 mg kg −1 for copper, 123.0 ± 438.1 mg kg −1 for lead, 78.3 ± 51.1 mg kg −1 for chromium, 37.8 ± 34.4 mg kg −1 for nickel and 2.3 ± 6.0 mg kg −1 for cadmium. The sources of heavy metals are complex, with industry and transportation as the main likely contributors. Reports on health risk assessment suggest that the impact of chromium and lead on children's health should not be underestimated.

Abstract:Dust particles and their associated compounds can adversely affect human health and ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the concentration, health, and ecological risks of selected potentially toxic elements (e.g. Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, V, Ni, and As) bound to air particles generated by dust storms in the Sejzi plain desert area within the industrial district of Isfahan metropolitan, Iran. The enrichment factor revealed the highest values for Zn, Pb, and Cd which among them Zn showed the highest value (8.1) with the potential source of industrial activities confirmed by the integrated pollution index, accumulation coefficient, and ecological risk index. Regarding health risk analysis (non-cancer and cancer risks) the elements including Co, As, and Cr showed a significant risk for adults and children across all seasons. It's concluded that mitigation of air particles originated from both natural and industrial activities is necessary to reduce their relevant risks to human being and ecosystems in the region.

Abstract:Zabol City in eastern Iran has been recognized as one of the windiest, dustiest, and most unhealthy urban environments globally. This work examines the chemical speciation, environmental contamination, and human health risk associated with atmospheric dust in Zabol and surrounding areas, via analysis of 77 dust samples collected at 12 urban and rural sites from October 2018 to September 2020. On average, the concentrations of trace elements followed a decreasing order of Mn > Ba > Sr > Zn > Cr > V > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > As > Mo > Cd, while abundant elements Al and Fe accounted for 5% and 2.9% of airborne dust, respectively. Significant enrichment factors were found for As and Cd and moderate for Mo. The ecological risk index indicated moderate pollution, with the highest contributions from Cd (68%) and As (25%). The intensive use of As-based fertilizers and pesticides in the agricultural lands in the Sitan Basin is the most likely source for the high As levels, while Cd, Pb, and Mo in airborne dust can be partly attributed to traffic-related contamination. Non-carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that ingestion is the primary exposure source of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) for both children and adults, with deleterious health effects, followed by skin contact and inhalation. The Hazard index (HI) for selected PTEs decreased in the order of Cr > As > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cu > Zn for both children and adults, classified within safe limits (HI 10 − 4 ) through ingestion exposure. Current results indicate that Zabol is still experiencing significant environmental and ecological contamination, as well as important health risks due to dust contaminated PTEs, necessitating appropriate mitigation strategies.

Abstract:A fundamental requirement for the effective prevention and management of soil contamination involves the determination of heavy metal contamination levels and the assessment of associated health risks for human populations. In this study, an analysis was conducted to evaluate the pollution levels and health risks associated with heavy metals in urban soils, specifically focusing on four distinct soil types, namely Calcisols, Cambisols, Fluvisols, and Regosols. The mean values of five heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni), some soil pollution indices, and human health risk indices were determined. Pollution indices including the integrated Newerow pollution index (PIN), single pollution index (PI), and pollution load index (PLI) showed a moderate pollution class in most soil samples. The non-carcinogen risk index of elements (HI) in each exposure pathway and the total of the exposure pathways (THI) was adult females > children and ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The carcinogenicity risk (CR) of Cd, Pb, and Ni through exposure by ingestion was >1 × 10−4 for children in all soils, meaning that soil ingestion is hazardous to children in the study region. For all three population groups and all soil types, Pb was most effective in HI and THI, whereas Cd had the highest carcinogenicity potential.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) contamination in road dust is a potential environmental and human health threat. The sources, concentrations, spatial distribution, and ecological risk of As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in road dust in Rafsanjan City, Iran, were investigated. Pollution was assessed using the enrichment factor (EF). The potentially harmful effects of HMs were evaluated by calculating the potential ecological risk factor of individual metals (Er) and of multiple metals (RI) using the Hakanson method. Correlation and principal component analyses (PCA) were applied to identify HM pollution sources. The concentrations of HMs in road dust were higher (ca. 5–10 folds) than their natural background values. The EF and Er increased according to the following order Cu > Pb > As > Zn > Cd > Cr > Ni and Cu > Cd > Pb > As > Ni > Zn > Cr, respectively. Thus, Cu is regarded as the pollutant of highest concern. Based on potential ecological risk index (RI) spatial distribution, all parts of Rafsanjan are characterized by significantly high potential ecological risk. HM concentration heat maps, PCA, and correlation analysis suggest that Cu, Pb, As, Cd, and Zn may have originated from the same source and follow the same spatial distribution pattern. These metals originated mainly from anthropogenic sources like copper mining and smelting plants, industrial and chemical activities, inordinate application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farmlands, and heavy traffic. Ni and Cr are likely to origniate from the industrial activities and traffic load in Rafsanjan City.

Abstract:The present study aims to measure the values of metal pollutants in the dust of schools in Mashhad metropolis, determine the source of metal pollution, evaluate the degree of pollution, assess the health risk (carcinogenicity/non-carcinogenicity) and evaluate the potential ecological risk. For this purpose, after measuring the concentration of metals using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer, from various indices including Geoaccumulation Index (I geo ), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Contamination Factors (CF), Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), Enrichment Factor (EF), and Health Risk Indices such as Hazard Quotient (HQ), Hazard Index (HI), Carcinogenic Risk (CR) were used. The average concentrations of iron, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, vanadium and zinc (Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) were 6361.50, 5.96, 0.59, 61.89, 37.13, 61.31, 28.93, 25.64 and 142.00 μg g −1 , respectively. Based on CF, PLI and I geo indices, most of the findings for the studied elements were at the low pollution level. The results also showed that the most likely origin of the studied metals was anthropogenic sources. The results of PERI indices showed that potential ecological risk at only one of the collection sites. In contrast, a high ecological risk was obtained for Cd. Hazard Index values were below safe levels for all studied elements. CR levels for elements were also classified as negligible and acceptable or tolerable risk, although the highest CR value for Cr indicated possible harm to humans. The findings showed the need for more attention and continuous monitoring of the concentration of metals, especially chromium, to announce a possible warning and prevent their harmful effects. It should be noted that the present study is the first research with mentioned objectives in Mashhad city and also in Khorasan Razavi province.

Abstract:High concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in urban surface dust (USD) can be extremely hazardous to urban ecology and human health. Oasis cities are located at the edge of deserts and are more exposed to salt/sandstorms, and they face a significantly higher accumulation of USD than wet or semi-humid areas. However, systematic studies on the pollution and risk assessment of HMs in USD in oasis cities have rarely been conducted. This study systematically analyzed the enrichment status, spatial distribution, pollution levels, health risks, and sources of HMs in USD in a typical oasis city (Changji city). The results showed that the average concentrations of Pb, Ni, As, Cd, Hg, and Cu in the USD of Changji city were 46.83, 26.35, 9.92, 0.21, 0.047, and 59.33 mg/kg, respectively, and the results of the pollution index evaluation showed moderate Pb, Hg, and Cu pollution, mild Cd pollution, and no Ni or As pollution. The spatial distribution of HM concentrations in the USD was substantially heterogeneous. High values of Pb, Hg, and Cu concentrations were mainly observed in areas with relatively intensive transportation and commercial activities, and high values of Cd and Ni were observed in industrial areas. The health risk assessment showed that HMs do not pose non-carcinogenic risks to humans at their current level, but they pose a carcinogenic risk to children, with As contributing the largest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. The source identification of HMs showed that the main pollution of HMs were traffic sources for Pb and Cu, industrial sources for Ni and Cd, natural sources for As, and coal-fired sources for Hg. According to the results of the quantitative analysis with the positive matrix factorization, the contribution of pollution sources followed this order: industrial sources (31.08%) > traffic sources (26.80%) > coal-fired sources (23.31%) > natural sources (18.81%).
Heavy Metals Distribution, Magnetic Properties, Source Apportionment, and Potential Risks in Urban Street Dust of Northwest China

Abstract:The enrichment levels, sources, and potential hazards of heavy metals (HMs) and magnetic minerals in street dust and sand-dust storm from an extremely arid city (Dunhuang) in the northwest of China were analyzed. The assessment was performed using pollution indices, magnetic parameters, positive matrix factorization (PMF), and risk assessment models. Average enrichment levels of HM (including Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Co, and Ni) in street dust were higher than those in urban topsoil and the background values. The enrichment factor, pollution load index (PLI), and geoaccumulation index showed that the HMs came from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd being strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources. The means mass-specific susceptibility ( χ lf ) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) of street dust were 135.65 × 10 −8 m 3 /kg and 1792 × 10 −5 Am 2 /kg, respectively, indicating that the street dust continuously receives pollutants containing high levels of coarse pseudo single-domain and multidomain ferromagnetic minerals. Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe, and ferromagnetic particles were principally associated with the industrial source and accounted for about 30.4% of these HM contents. Pb and Co were mainly produced from coal mining and coal combustion sources. Cu was principally associated with traffic emissions. Al, Mn, and Co were mainly generated by natural sources, contributing 38.9%. The ecological risk of HMs in street dust was moderate with considerable risk in individual sites, driven by Cd. The non-carcinogenic risks of HMs were within safety limits, and the carcinogenic risks were below the receivable values.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) pollution from dust was prevalent in cities worldwide. In order to quantify the risk-releasing capacity of HMs to the environment and human body, 54 road dust samples from Zhengzhou were selected for this study to analyze 9 different HMs among them. The risk-releasing capacity of HMs in the environment was determined using the sequential extraction method developed by the European Community Bureau of Reference, and the risk-releasing capacity of HMs in the human body was assessed using the bioaccessibility method. The results showed that elements such as Zn, Cd and Pb were significantly enriched, and Cd was the priority control pollutant. The positive matrix factorization results indicated that industrial activities (28.5%), oil combustion (20.7%), transportation activities (31.6%) and natural sources (19.2%) were the main sources of HMs in dust. The percentage of different speciation of HMs was determined, which showed that Cd had the strongest risk-releasing capacity in the environment. Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were highly bioaccessible in the gastrointestinal tract. The bioaccessibility of HMs in artificial lysosomal fluid solution was two orders of magnitude higher than that in Gamble's solution. When considering the bioaccessibility of HMs, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices were significantly lower. This study provides new insights into the determination of the risk-releasing capacity of HMs.

Abstract:Atmospheric particle samples (PM、PM、PM) were collected from three sampling sites (indoor and outdoor workplaces of a formal e-waste dismantling plant, and upwind area) in an arid area of Northwest China. The contents of six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed using ICP-OES. Based on this data, the concentration levels, size distribution characteristics, and occupational exposure risks of heavy metals at the indoor and outdoor dismantling workplaces were studied. Particle analysis showed that Zn (4890 ng·m indoors, 1245 ng·m outdoors)、Pb (indoors 1201 ng·m, outdoors 240 ng·m), and Cu (indoors 1200 ng·m, outdoors 110 ng·m) showed higher pollution levels indoors and outdoors at the dismantling workplace. Moreover, the indoor concentration was much higher than that outdoors, indicating that the dismantling activity was the main cause of the high levels of heavy metal contamination. The indoor and outdoor air pollution characteristics were closely related to the types of electronic waste dismantled. Occupational exposure risk assessments showed that the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotient (HQ) of the indoor and outdoor dismantling workshops was 1.62×10, and 3.60×10, respectively, and the carcinogenic risk values were 2.69×10 and 2.59×10. Cd caused the greatest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks at both indoor and outdoor dismantling workplaces, but it was still far below the limits (1.0) and acceptable ranges (1×10) stipulated by U.S. EPA, indicating that the health risks caused by heavy metals were minor or negligible. Heavy metals in the ambient particulate matter released from an adequately equipped and formally managed e-waste dismantling plant would not lead to any public health risk. The sedimentation characteristics of particulate heavy metals in different organs of the human respiratory system exhibited that the smaller the particle size was, the greater the proportion of deposition in the depths of the respiratory system was. Enterprises should make scientific and effective decisions on the respiratory health risks caused by such fine particles to the health of professional workers.
Characterization, possible sources and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound Heavy Metals in the most industrial city of Iran

Abstract:Air pollution associated with particulate matters results in different types of disease including allergy, lung destruction, heart failure, and related problems. This study has been designed and performed to examine the concentration of PM2.5-bound heavy metals, risk assessment, possible sources and effect of meteorological parameters on 17 sites of the air of the most industrial city of Iran (Karaj) in 2018-19. For this purpose, four samples were taken from every point of Karaj air over one year using a pump (Leland Legacy (SKC)) with flow rate of 3 L/min on PTFE filter for 24 h. Overall, 68 samples of PM2.5-bound heavy metals were collected. Note that during the sampling, atmospheric parameters including temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed were regularly recorded using PHB318 portable device. In examining the chemical composition of these particles, the concentration of metals (Al-Zn- Ar-Cd-Cr-Cu-Fe-Hg-Mn-Ni-Pb) was determined after digestion of the collected samples and through injection into ICP-OEC device. The results indicated that the mean annual concentration of PM2.5 particles range from 21.84 to 72.75 µg/m3. The mean concentration of heavy metals lied within the range of 25.63 to 336.27 ng/m3. Among heavy metals, the maximum concentration belonged to aluminum (277.95 ng/m3) and iron (336.27 ng/m3), which are known as elements with a ground source (sources such as car fuels, exhaust gases, decorative materials, batteries, indoor smoking, the paint used for painting walls, erosion and corrosion of rubber of cars). Meanwhile, there was a positive relationship between heavy metals and temperature(r: 0.418, p < 0.019), pressure (r: 0.184, p < 0.0.402), as well as wind speed (r: 0.38, p < 0.017), while an inverse relationship was observed with relative humidity (r: -0.219, p < 0.018). The ecological risk of the metals calculated was very notable, with the maximum environmental risk being related to cadmium in children (6.61) and manganese in adults (0.82). The largest HQ in children and adults was associated with Cr. Finally, ILCR values for cadmium in both children (1.19 E-04) and adult (4.81 E-04) groups indicated high risk of developing cancer in humans.
Ecological and health risk assessment of heavy metals in interior dust from college campus

Abstract:Contamination of college campus dust with heavy metals and the calculation of their ecological and health risks to the students and staff did not receive much attention except in recent years. This study aims to assess the ecological and human health risks of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in interior dust of College of Science/University campus. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was utilized to estimate the samples that were collected from 46 locations of the college campus including: classrooms, offices, and laboratories. The Pb, Cu, Cr and Zn metals in the interior dust of the College of Science pose low potential ecological risk, whereas Cd generates medium potential ecological risk. The gained results showed that the student and staff of the College are exposed to low non-cancerous health risks (HI < 1) caused by Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in interior dust. The total lifetime carcinogenic risks (TLCR) of Cd, Cr, and Pb are within the acceptable safe limit (10-6-10-4). The low non-carcinogenic health risks of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn and that the carcinogenic health risks of Cd, Cr and Pb fall within acceptable safe limits, measured in the interior dust of the campus of the College of Science, does not mean neglecting the continuous assessment of those risks.

Abstract:China’s desert steppe is the transition zone between the grasslands in central China and the arid desert. Ecological security in this region has long been a subject of debate, both in the local and academic communities. Heavy metals and other pollutants are readily released during industrial production, combustion, and transportation, aggravating the vulnerability of the desert steppes. To understand the impact of industrial activiteis on the heavy metal content of dust fall in the desert steppe, a total of 37 dust fall samples were collected over 90 days. An inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (NexION 350X) was used to measure the concentration of heavy metals Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, Co, and Zn in the dust. Using comprehensive pollution index and multivariate statistical analysis methods, we explored the characteristics and sources of heavy metal pollution. We also quantitatively assessed the carcinogenic risks of heavy metals resulting from dust reduction with the help of health risk assessment models. The heavy metals’ comprehensive pollution index values in the study area’s dust fall were ranked as follows: Zn > Cd > Pb > Mn > Cu > Co > Cr. Among these, Zn, Cd, and Pb were significant pollution factors in the study area, and were affected by industrial production and transportation. The high pollution index was concentrated in the north of the research industrial park and on both sides of a highway. The seven heavy metals’ total non-carcinogenic risk index (HI) values were ranked as follows: Mn > Co > Pb > Zn > Cr > Cu > Cd (only the HI of Mn was greater than one). Excluding Mn, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk index values of the other six heavy metals were within acceptable ranges. Previous studies have also shown that industrial transportation and production have had a significant impact on the heavy metal content of dust fall in the desert steppe.

Abstract:Dust deposited on residential and agricultural lands can have serious consequences for the ecosystem when toxic trace elements are present. This study aimed to assess the ecological risk of the trace elements found in the deposited dust around the Mehdi Abad Pb/Zn mine, Yazd, Iran, using several modified pollution indices. The dust samples were collected by the grid method and a Marble Dust Collector (MDCO) sampler to evaluate the concentration of thirty trace elements: nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), dysprosium (Dy), lanthanum (La), lithium (Li), niobium (Nb), tin (Sn), neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), rubidium (Rb), Ferrum (Fe), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), tantalum (Ta), terbium (Tb), zirconium (Zr), tellurium (Te), thorium (Th), titanium (Ti), uranium (U), vanadium (V), yttrium (Y), ytterbium (Yb), thulium (Tm), and cobalt (Co). This study employed multivariate statistical techniques, including Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and the IDW interpolation technique, as well as modified pollution indices such as Enrichment Factor (EF), Modified Pollution Index (MPI), Modified Potential Ecological Risk Index (MRI), and Modified Hazard Quotient (mHQ). All the statistical data analyses were performed via SPSS Statistics, version 22.00. The HCA results showed that all of these trace elements, except Fe, form a group and had similar behavior. The average levels of all elements in the dust samples except for Cr, S, Sr, Ta, Tb, and Te exceeded the background value. The results confirmed that both anthropogenic activities and natural factors were responsible for the trace elements found in the dust. The average EF value for Pb (43.26) indicated its extremely high enrichment in the study area. The MPI, mHQ, and MRI results showed that 33%, 100%, and 33.33% of the dust samples were in the heavily polluted, extreme severity, and high risk categories, respectively. The IDW analysis results revealed that the highest value of the MRI and mHQ indices was in agricultural lands and residential areas; the predominant wind direction also played a role in transferring the elements from the mine to these areas. In general, the results indicated that mining activities increased the ecological risk in Mehdi Abad due to the presence of trace elements, especially Pb.
Airborne Particulates Pollution Level Characterization and Ecological Health Risk Assessment of Toxic Metals in Suburban Sfax, Southern Tunisia

Abstract:The present study investigated the temporal variability of PM10 water-soluble and water-insoluble constituents (Ca ++ , Cl − , Na + , Mg ++ , K + , Fe (2;3)+ , PO 4 3− , NH 4 + , NO 3 − , SO 4 = , Pb, Zn, and Cu), as well as, the ecological and human health risks associated with toxic metals. It was conducted at the proximity of a traffic crossroad (≈22,580 vehicles per day) close to some kindergartens and schools (50–100 m) located in Suburban Sfax (Southern Tunisia), from January to October 2017. The results revealed the significant impact of multi-scale sources and meteorology. The source apportionment based on enrichment factors and principal component analysis highlighted three main origins: crustal (for Ca ++ , Mg ++ , Na + , K + , and Fe (2;3)+ ), marine (for Cl − ), and anthropogenic (for NO 3 − , NH 4 + , SO 4 = , PO 4 3− , Pb, Zn, and Cu). Computed I geo values of Pb, Zn, and Cu show that the most PM10 samples (80%) were ranged from 0 to 3. Based on Müller scale, they were moderately to strongly polluted. Eighteen percent of them were found to be strongly to extremely polluted. As regard m-ERM-Q values, the results showed that almost 50% of samples were characterized by a moderate ecological toxicity risk, and only 5% of them were distinguished by a high risk. Computed Hazard Index levels were shown to be significant for ingestion in the children's group (4.09E+01) and for ingestion and dermal absorption in adults (8.49E+00 and 3.05E+02, respectively). These levels, well above 1, show a strong possibility of the chronic effects' occurrence for the two age groups. The carcinogenic risk (CR) levels linked to Pb showing values ranged between 2.27E−06 and 7.60E−03 indicate moderate chances of developing any type of cancer due to lifetime exposure to this metal.
