Abstract:Nonionic polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels were synthesized using three methods: room temperature polymerization, cryo-polymerization, and modified cryo-polymerization. Anionic PAAm hydrogels were obtained after hydrolyzing the nonionic hydrogels under alkaline conditions. The composition of anionic hydrogels was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and element analysis. Morphological studies showed that the hydrogels exhibited various pore structures when they were synthesized using different methods. An additional mechanism for the formation of cryogels was proposed. Investigation of the swelling properties of the hydrogels and analysis of the swelling kinetics showed that the hydrolyzed PAAm hydrogels had rapid pH-sensitive rates.

Abstract:A novel temperature-response hydrogel was developed for drug-delivery applications. The hydrogel matrix (PES) was synthesized by melt polycondensation of poly(ether–ester) diacid based on PEG with low molecular weight and sebacic acid. The sol–gel–sol phase transitions of PES nanoparticle (NP) hydrogel were investigated. In vitro erosion of hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. In vitro release behaviors of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs and in vivo histopathological evaluation were studied in detail. The study results revealed that an aqueous dispersion of PES nanoparticle freeze-dried powder exhibited reversible sol–gel transition behavior with increasing temperature. The hydrogel could maintain steadily at least a month during in vitro erosion process. There were sustained release behaviors of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs from PES NP hydrogel and histopathological studies confirmed that the PES NP hydrogel only provoked an acceptable modest inflammatory response. Thus, PES NP hydrogel is biodegradable, biocompatible and promising in controlling the incorporated drugs for sustained release.

Abstract:The development of novel hydrogels with high biocompatibility is a vital and active topic of study. Here, we used a facile polycondensation approach to develop multifunctional poly (ether sulfone) (PES)-based hydrogels with diverse functional groups (−SO 3 Na, −COONa, −OH, and − NH 2 ), as indicated by flourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The chemical structure of the PES-based hydrogels could be modulated by monomer selection and post-treatment, resulting in a wide range of biomolecule-mimic structures and matching biological functions. In the current investigation, heparin-mimic PES-based hydrogels demonstrated good hemocompatibility, as evident by reduced platelet adhesion and activation, delayed clotting times, suppressed blood-related complement activations, and CD11b expression on leukocytes in the blood. Moreover, hyper-sulfonated PES-based hydrogels showed exceptional cytocompatibility with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and considerable antiproliferative activity against human umbilical artery smooth muscle cells (HUASMCs), as revealed by cell proliferation and cytotoxicity assay findings. Finally, chitosan-mimic PES-based hydrogels had marked anti-microbial properties against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), as shown by the number of colonies. The aforementioned bio-functions were attributed to the formation of various chemical structures on the surfaces of PES-based hydrogels. The distinctive PES-based hydrogels synthesized in this work would be of high utility not only in the synthesis of biomedical hydrogels but also in the rational design of various types of biocompatible materials.

Abstract:Hydrogels have gained significant interest in the last decades, especially in the medical sector, due to their versatile properties. While hydrogels from naturally occurring polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose) are well-known, those produced from polymerizable carbohydrate-based monomers remain underexplored. However, these semi-synthetic hydrogels offer the great advantage of having adjustable properties for customization depending on their application. The objective of this study was to characterize semi-synthetic carbohydrate-based ionic hydrogels produced from GVIM-I (glucosyl vinyl imidazolium iodide). The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the disk diffusion method, which demonstrated that all samples exhibit inhibitory effects on the growth of Candida auris. In vitro biocompatibility was determined by cell viability studies with L929 mouse fibroblasts, and a correlation was observed between eluate concentration and cell viability. In particular, the type of initiator system employed for polymerization was found to affect cell viability. The direct contact assessments showed that specific pre-treatments of the hydrogels resulted in higher cell viability than non-treated hydrogels. The results also revealed the impact of crosslinker concentration and type and identified poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate (PEGDA) 575 as a promising crosslinker for future medical applications. LC-MS analysis of the wash medium identified unreacted GVIM-I as the leached material, which is presumed to be the cause of the observed cytotoxicity. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the characteristics of GVIM-I based hydrogels and sheds light on the factors that influence their cytotoxicity and potential for medical application.

Abstract:Gelatin-based hydrogels are highly desirable biomaterials for use in wound dressing, drug delivery, and extracellular matrix components due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, insufficient and uncontrollable mechanical properties and degradation are the major obstacles to their application in medical materials. Herein, we present a simple but efficient strategy for a novel hydrogel by incorporating the synthetic hydrogel monomer polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA, offering high mechanical stability) into a biological hydrogel compound (gelatin) to provide stable mechanical properties and biocompatibility at the resulting hybrid hydrogel. In the present work, PEGDA/gelatin hybrid hydrogels were prepared by electron irradiation as a reagent-free crosslinking technology and without using chemical crosslinkers, which carry the risk of releasing toxic byproducts into the material. The viscoelasticity, swelling behavior, thermal stability, and molecular structure of synthesized hybrid hydrogels of different compound ratios and irradiation doses were investigated. Compared with the pure gelatin hydrogel, 21/9 wt./wt. % PEGDA/gelatin hydrogels at 6 kGy exhibited approximately up to 1078% higher storage modulus than a pure gelatin hydrogel, and furthermore, it turned out that the mechanical stability increased with increasing irradiation dose. The chemical structure of the hybrid hydrogels was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and it was confirmed that both compounds, PEGDA and gelatin, were equally present. Scanning electron microscopy images of the samples showed fracture patterns that confirmed the findings of viscoelasticity increasing with gelatin concentration. Infrared microspectroscopy images showed that gelatin and PEGDA polymer fractions were homogeneously mixed and a uniform hybrid material was obtained after electron beam synthesis. In short, this study demonstrates that both the presence of PEGDA improved the material properties of PEGDA/gelatin hybrid hydrogels and the resulting properties are fine-tuned by varying the irradiation dose and PEGDA/gelatin concentration.

Abstract:Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, natural hydrogels are highly demanded biomaterials for biomedical applications such as wound dressing, tissue engineering, drug delivery or three dimensional cell culture. Highly energetic electron irradiation up to 10 MeV is a powerful and fast tool to sterilize and tailor the material's properties. In this study, electron radiation treatment of agarose hydrogels was investigated to evaluate radiation effects on physical, structural and chemical properties. The viscoelastic behavior, surface hydrophilicity and swelling behavior in a range of typical sterilization doses of 0 kGy to 30 kGy was analyzed. The mechanical properties were determined by rheology measurements and decreased by more than 20% compared to the initial moduli. The number average molecular weight between crosslinks was estimated based on rubber elasticity theory to judge on the radiation degradation. In this dose range, the number average molecular weight between crosslinks increased by more than 6%. Chemical structure was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy to evaluate the radiation resistance of agarose hydrogels. With increasing electron dose, an increasing amount of carbonyl containing species was observed. In addition, irradiation was accompanied by formation of gas cavities in the hydrogels. The gas products were specified for CO2, CO and H2O. Based on the radiolytic products, a radiolysis mechanism was proposed. Electron beam treatment under high pressure conditions was found to reduce gas cavity formation in the hydrogels.

Abstract:Hydrogels were prepared by Steglich esterification and by crosslinking pre-synthesized poly(sorbitol adipate)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) mono methyl ether (PSA-g-mPEG) using different-chain-length-based disuccinyl PEG. PSA and PSA-g-mPEG were investigated for polymer degradation as a function of time at different temperatures. PSA-g-mPEG hydrogels were then evaluated for their most crucial properties of swelling that rendered them suitable for many pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Hydrogels were also examined for their Sol-Gel content in order to investigate the degree of cross-linking. Physical structural parameters of the hydrogels were theoretically estimated using the modified Flory–Rehner theory to obtain approximate values of polymer volume fraction, the molecular weight between two crosslinks, and the mesh size of the hydrogels. X-ray diffraction was conducted to detect the presence or absence of crystalline regions in the hydrogels. PSA-g-mPEG hydrogels were then extensively examined for higher and lower molecular weight solute release through analysis by fluorescence spectroscopy. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the hydrogels was also investigated using a resazurin reduction assay. Experimental results show that PSA-g-mPEG provides an option as a biocompatible polymer to be used for pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract:Primary challenges associated with the design and success of polymeric biomedical devices are generally related to the control of the biomaterial in terms of degradability characteristics, sufficient processability characteristics, and required mechanical strength that may be altered during sterilization or manufacturing procedures. Polyvinyl alcohol‐based thermoresponsive biomaterials provide a distinct advantage for biomedical applications as their physiochemical properties can be easily modified according to their desired use. In this work, we evaluated the thermal degradation characteristics of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel that undergoes a steam sterilization autoclave cycle at 121°C to induce fluid‐like behavior. FTIR was used to characterize the evolution of the area of the carbonyl region between 1800 and 1525 cm−1. The carbonyl area increased at temperatures beyond 121°C which were used to accelerate the onset of degradation during both thermal oxidation and pyrolysis. The change in the carbonyl region was shown to correlate with respect to both temperature and time of exposure. The carbonyl region increased significantly in the presence of oxygen at temperatures above 150°C. Despite showing signs of thermal degradation at temperatures exceeding 150°C, our biomaterial was shown to be stable at 121°C during thermal degradation testing. Furthermore, bulk property analysis showed the hydrogel's mechanical and swelling properties were preserved even after being subject to multiple autoclave cycles beyond what would be experienced during a sterilization or clinical procedure.

Abstract:Wound dressings represent the first important defense line against potentially life-threatening infections. Successful materials should unify efficiency, simplicity of production with the ease of application. Cationic polymers based on quaternary ammonium salt moieties along the polymer chain promise high efficacy against growth of relevant pathogens including drug-resistant strains. We present a novel and easy-to-handle wound dressing material based on the well-defined copolymers of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), using quaternization with 1,6-dibromohexane for hydrogel formation. The material obtained from this robust approach was perfectly biocompatible with human dermal fibroblasts and revealed an auspicious degree of intrinsic antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa as a model pathogen for hospital-acquired infections. Formation of bacterial biofilms was prevented in early- and late-stages and even planktonic cells were killed upon gel contact. The rheological properties of the hydrogel materials were comprehensively characterized in both dry and swollen states. Excellent biological performance and appropriate viscoelastic properties qualify the hydrogels from our production approach as truly promising novel wound dressing materials with long-lasting and contact-active bactericidal activities. We believe that this charmingly simple procedure and the mechanical properties of the hydrogel may open new avenues towards cost-effective next-generation first-line wound-care materials.

Abstract:Numerous hydrogels made of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) and various cross-linkers have been explored, but only limited data on hydrogels made of γ-PGA and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) are available. In this study, γ-PGA, a biodegradable and edible biopolyamide, was successfully cross-linked with selected PEGs to obtain a series of hydrogels. The swelling behaviour of these hydrogels was investigated under various pH conditions. It was also found that the structure of the cross-linker (linear or branched) affected the hydrogels’ swelling behaviour. In addition, in disc diffusion assay, hydrogel discs loaded with antibiotic were tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Prolonged activity of hydrogels loaded with antibiotics in comparison to paper discs containing antibiotics was observed. Moreover, the protective effect of hydrogels on entrapped probiotic cells subjected to low pH was investigated. The hydrogel swelling ratio and amount influenced the survival rate of the protected bacteria. Considering potential biomedical applications of hydrogels, cytotoxicity was evaluated towards two cell lines, MSTO and PANC 1.
Degradable poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-polycaprolactone hydrogels for tissue engineering scaffolds

Abstract:Biodegradable poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(pHEMA) hydrogels for engineered tissue constructs were developed by the use of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a degradable cross-linker, and a macroinitiator. Hydrogels are appropriate materials for tissue engineering scaffolds because of their tissue-like mechanical compliance and mass transfer properties. However, many hydrogels that have seen wide application in medicine are not biodegradable or cannot be easily cleared from the body. pHEMA was selected for the scaffold material because of its reasonable mechanical strength, elasticity, and long history of successful use in medicine as well as because it can be easily fabricated into numerous configurations. pHEMA was studied at various molecular weights between 2 and 50 kDa. The molecular weight range suitable for renal clearance was an important factor in the experimental design. The fabricated hydrogels contain oligomeric blocks of polycaprolactone (PCL), a hydrolytically and enzymatically degradable polymer, as a cross-linking agent. In addition, a degradable macroinitiator that also contained oligomeric PCL was used to initiate the ATRP. The chain length, cross-link density, and polymerization solvent were found to affect the mechanical properties of the pHEMA hydrogels. Degradation of the pHEMA hydrogels was characterized by the use of 0.007 M NaOH, lipase solutions, and phosphate-buffered saline. The mass loss, swelling ratio, and tensile modulus were evaluated. Degradation products after sodium hydroxide treatment were measured by the use of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) to verify the polymer lengths and polydispersity. Erosion was observed in only the sodium hydroxide and lipase solutions. However, the swelling ratio and tensile modulus indicate bulk degradation in all PCL-containing samples. Degradable hydrogels in enzymatic solutions showed 30% mass loss in 16 weeks. Initial cell toxicity studies indicate no adverse cellular response to the hydrogels or their degradation products. These hydrogels have appropriate mechanical properties and a tunable degradation rate, and they are composed of materials that are currently in FDA-approved devices. Therefore, the degradable pHEMA developed in this study has considerable potential as a scaffold for tissue engineering applications, in cardiac and other applications.

Abstract:<p>The biomedical applications of physically entangled polymeric hydrogels are generally limited due to their weak mechanical properties, rapid swelling and dissolution in physiologically relevant environment. Chemical crosslinking helps stabilizing hydrogel structure and enhancing mechanical properties, thereby allowing a higher stability in phisiological environment. In this context, it is known that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel are affected by both the molecular weight (MW) of the starting polymer and the concentration of the crosslinker. Here, our aim was to assess the influence of polymer molecular weight and concentration in the precursor solution on the mechanical features of the final hydrogel and their influence on cells-material interaction. In detail, 3D synthetic matrices based on poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) at two molecular weights (PEG 700 and PEG 3400) and at three different concentrations (10, 20, 40 w/v %), which were photopolymerized using darocour as an initiator, were studied. Then, infrared and swelling analyses, along with a comprehensive mechanical characterization of the obtained hydrogels (i.e. oscillatory shear and confined compression tests), were performed. Finally, to evaluate the influence of the mechanical features on the biological behaviour, the hydrogels were characterized in terms of cell adhesion percentage and viability after functionalizing the substrates with RGD peptide at three different concentrations. Results have demonstrated that both the Young's modulus (E) in compression and the elastic modulus (G') in shear of the hydrogels increase with increasing polymer precursor concentration. E decreased as MW increased, and the differences are more relevant for more concentrated hydrogels. On the contrary, G' appears to increase with increasing PEGDA MW and in particular for the lowest polymer precursor concentration. The biological results have demonstrated that cells cultured for longer times seem to prefer PEG 3400 hydrogels with a larger mesh size structure that posses higher viscoelastic properties in shear.</p>

Abstract:Hybrid hydrogels with superabsorbent properties based on acrylic acid (20%), sodium alginate (0.5%) and poly(ethylene oxide) (0.1%) were obtained by electron-beam irradiation between 5 and 20 kGy, and are characterized by different physical and chemical methods; the first results reported showed gel fractions over 87%, cross-link densities under 9.9 × 103 mol/cm3 and swelling degrees of 400 g/g. Two types of hydrogels (without and with 0.1% initiator potassium persulfate) have been subjected to swelling and deswelling experiments in different swelling media with different pHs, chosen in accordance with the purpose for which these superabsorbent materials were obtained, i.e., water and nutrients carriers for agricultural purposes: 6.05 (distilled water), 7.66 (tap water), 5.40 (synthetic nutrient solution) and 7.45 (organic nutrient solution). Swelling kinetics and swelling dynamics have been also studied in order to investigate the influence of swelling media type and pH on the absorption phenomenon. The swelling and deswelling behaviors were influenced by the hydrogel characteristics and pH of the swelling media. Both the polymeric chain relaxation (non-Fickian diffusion) and macromolecular relaxation (super case II) phenomenon were highlighted as a function of swelling media type.

Abstract:Polymer-based materials, such as polyethylene glycol and its derivatives, are popular as biomaterials, including for clinical purposes. The hydrogels used in drug-carrying systems have become beneficial in cancer therapy. Due to their unique biocompatibility, durability, enhanced drug loading capacity, and low cytotoxicity, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) hydrogels are widely used in drug delivery systems. In this work, we illustrated the photopolymerization of four PEGDMA/methyl cellulose (MC) hydrogels at four concentrations. Irgacure 2959 (2-hydroxy-4′-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-methylpropiophenone) was used as a UV photoinitiator. Various aspects of the properties of hydrogels were studied. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used for the chemical bonds, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the surface morphology, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to identify the thermal behavior, and swelling, contact angle, and degradation tests were executed to understand the hydrogels' behavior against moisture. Cancer cells' ability to grow and proliferate on PEGDMA hydrogels was examined to assess the hydrogels' viability as a drug carrier system for tissue engineering applications. The results suggest that the F4 hydrogels present a novel all-round means of cell culture and drug delivery as they permit target drug delivery and exhibit nontoxic behavior due to their high swelling ratio, good degradation profile, and biocompatibility, confirming that these hydrogels are suitable for further applications in cell culture analysis.

Abstract:In this study we report the rheological behavior of aqueous solutions of an amphiphilic graft copolymer constituting a polyacrylic acid (PAA) grafted by poly(boc-L-lysine), P(b-LL). Due to the highly hydrophobic nature of the grafted chains, the copolymer self-assembles spontaneously in aqueous media forming three-dimensional (3D) finite size networks (microgels). The rheological analysis demonstrated that the copolymer behaves as a strong elastic hydrogel, showing characteristics of a "frozen" network. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the formulation shows the above-described characteristics in very small concentrations (0.25–1.20 wt%) compared to other naturally cross-linked hydrogels that have been studied so far. Concentration significantly affects the rheological properties of the hydrogel, showing considerable increase in elastic modulus, following the scaling law G'~C1.93. At the same time, the hydrogels can be described as intelligent stimuli-responsive systems, showing pH and shear responsiveness as well as stability with temperature changes. Thanks to the pH dependance of the degree of ionization of the weak polyelectrolyte PAA backbone, stiffness and swelling of the hydrogels can be tuned effectively by adjusting the pH conditions. Simulating conditions such as those of injection through a 28-gauge syringe needle, the gel demonstrates excellent response to shear, due to its remarkable shear thinning behavior. The combination of pH-sensitivity and shear responsiveness leads to excellent injectability and self-healing properties, given that it flows easily upon applying a low stress and recovers instantly in the site of injection. Therefore, the physically cross-linked PAA-g-P(b-LL) hydrogel exhibits remarkable features, namely biocompatibility, biodegradability of cross-links, pH responsiveness, shear-induced injectability and instantaneous self-healing, making it a potential candidate for various biomedical applications.

Abstract:The hydrogel-forming ability and post-gelling mechanical properties of structural extracellular polymeric substances (sEPS) extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) were studied in comparison to well-known biopolymers (i.e., alginate and κ-/ι-carrageenan) taking advantage of material-saving, reproducible and robust experimental protocols. With respect to alginate and κ-carrageenan, sEPS and ι-carrageenan hydrogels formed in presence of divalent metal ions M 2+ behaved similarly once subjected to consecutive compression-decompression cycles, deforming elastically in all the applied range of deformations. While the overall mechanical response remained almost unchanged varying polymer concentration and ionic cross-linker concentration and nature, the Young's modulus E appeared significantly affected by the applied gelling conditions ( E ≃ 4–20 kPa). As a result of the higher complexity of the extracellular biopolymeric matrix, higher driving forces (sEPS and M 2+ concentrations) were needed to form stable and stiff hydrogels with respect to the studied model biopolymers: the establishment of an extended 3D network started for sEPS concentrations around 2.5 wt% (Ca 2+ ≥ 0.1 M). Oscillatory shear experiments confirmed that sEPS were able to form hydrogels with solid-like mechanical properties at 1–10 wt% sEPS concentrations. Overall, the optimization of the gelling methods performed might help to overcome many bottlenecks characterizing this research area. The feasibility of forming sEPS hydrogels with mechanical properties comparable to other biopolymer-based systems currently applied for commercial purposes led to an awareness of the potential application and might open new valorisation scenarios able to contribute to a more bio-based and circular economy.

Nonwoven Reinforced Photocurable Poly(glycerol sebacate)-Based Hydrogels

Abstract:Implantable hydrogels should ideally possess mechanical properties matched to the surrounding tissues to enable adequate mechanical function while regeneration occurs. This can be challenging, especially when degradable systems with high water content and hydrolysable chemical bonds are required in anatomical sites under constant mechanical stimulation, e.g. a foot ulcer cavity. In these circumstances, the design of hydrogel composites is a promising strategy to provide controlled structural features and macroscopic properties over time. To explore this strategy, the synthesis of a new photocurable elastomeric polymer, poly(glycerol-co-sebacic acid-co-lactic acid-co-polyethylene glycol) acrylate (PGSLPA), is investigated, along with its processing into UV-cured hydrogels, electrospun nonwovens and fibre-reinforced variants, without the need for a high temperature curing step or use of hazardous solvents. The mechanical properties of bioresorbable PGSLPA hydrogels were studied with and without electrospun nonwoven reinforcement and with varied layered configurations, aiming to determine the effects of microstructure on bulk compressive strength and elasticity. The nonwoven reinforced PGSLPA hydrogels exhibited a 60 % increase in compressive strength and an 80 % increase in elastic moduli compared to fibre-free PGSLPA samples. Mechanical properties of the fibre-reinforced hydrogels could also be modulated by altering the layering arrangement of the nonwoven and hydrogel phase. The nanofibre reinforced PGSLPA hydrogels also exhibited good elastic recovery, as evidenced by hysteresis in compression fatigue stress-strain evaluations showing a return to original dimensions.

Abstract:The study addresses the challenge of temperature sensitivity in pristine gelatin hydrogels, widely used in biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, low cost, and cell adhesion properties. Traditional gelatin hydrogels dissolve at physiological temperatures, limiting their utility. Here, we introduce a novel method for creating stable hydrogels at 37 °C using pristine gelatin through photopolymerization without requiring chemical modifications. This approach enhances consistency and simplifies production and functionalization of the gelatin with bioactive molecules. The stabilization mechanism involves the partial retention of the triple-helix structure of gelatin below 25 °C, which provides specific crosslinking sites. Upon activation by visible light, ruthenium (Ru) acts as a photosensitizer that generates sulphate radicals from sodium persulphate (SPS), inducing covalent bonding between tyrosine residues and "locking" the triple-helix conformation. The primary focus of this work is the characterization of the mechanical properties, swelling ratio, and biocompatibility of the photopolymerized gelatin hydrogels. Notably, these hydrogels supported better cell viability and elongation in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) compared to GelMA, and similar performance was observed for human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). As a proof of concept for functionalization, gelatin was modified with selenous acid (GelSe), which demonstrated antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities, particularly against E. coli and S. aureus. These results suggest that pristine gelatin hydrogels, enhanced through this new photopolymerization method and functionalized with bioactive molecules, hold potential for advancing regenerative medicine and tissue engineering by providing robust, biocompatible scaffolds for cell culture and therapeutic applications.
