Abstract:The direct energy functional minimization problem in electronic structure theory, where the single-particle orbitals are optimized under the constraint of orthogonality, is explored. We present an orbital transformation based on an efficient expansion of the inverse factorization of the overlap matrix that keeps orbitals orthonormal. The orbital transformation maps the orthogonality constrained energy functional to an approximate unconstrained functional, which is correct to some order in a neighborhood of an orthogonal but approximate solution. A conjugate gradient scheme can then be used to find the ground state orbitals from the minimization of a sequence of transformed unconstrained electronic energy functionals. The technique provides an efficient, robust, and numerically stable approach to direct total energy minimization in first principles electronic structure theory based on tight-binding, Hartree-Fock, or density functional theory. For sparse problems, where both the orbitals and the effective single-particle Hamiltonians have sparse matrix representations, the effort scales linearly with the number of basis functions N in each iteration. For problems where only the overlap and Hamiltonian matrices are sparse the computational cost scales as O(M2N), where M is the number of occupied orbitals. We report a single point density functional energy calculation of a DNA decamer hydrated with 4003 water molecules under periodic boundary conditions. The DNA fragment containing a cis-syn thymine dimer is composed of 634 atoms and the whole system contains a total of 12,661 atoms and 103,333 spherical Gaussian basis functions.
Robust linear-scaling optimization of compact localized orbitals in density functional theory

Abstract:Locality of compact one-electron orbitals expanded strictly in terms of local subsets of basis functions can be exploited in density functional theory (DFT) to achieve linear growth of computation time with systems size, crucial in large-scale simulations. However, despite advantages of compact orbitals the development of practical orbital-based linear-scaling DFT methods has long been hindered because a compact representation of the electronic ground state is difficult to find in a variational optimization procedure. In this work, we show that the slow and unstable optimization of compact orbitals originates from the nearly-invariant mixing of compact orbitals that are mostly but not completely localized within the same subsets of basis functions. We also construct an approximate Hessian that can be used to identify the problematic nearly-invariant modes and obviate the variational optimization along them without introducing significant errors into the computed energies. This enables us to create a linear-scaling DFT method with a low computational overhead that is demonstrated to be efficient and accurate in fixed-nuclei calculations and molecular dynamics simulations of semiconductors and insulators.

Diagonalization without Diagonalization: A Direct Optimization Approach for Solid-State Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present a novel approach to address the challenges of variable occupation numbers in direct optimization of density functional theory (DFT). By parameterizing both the eigenfunctions and the occupation matrix, our method minimizes the free energy with respect to these parameters. As the stationary conditions require the occupation matrix and the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian to be simultaneously diagonalizable, this leads to the concept of ``self-diagonalization,'' where, by assuming a diagonal occupation matrix without loss of generality, the Hamiltonian matrix naturally becomes diagonal at stationary points. Our method incorporates physical constraints on both the eigenfunctions and the occupations into the parameterization, transforming the constrained optimization into an fully differentiable unconstrained problem, which is solvable via gradient descent. Implemented in JAX, our method was tested on aluminum and silicon, confirming that it achieves efficient self-diagonalization, produces the correct Fermi-Dirac distribution of the occupation numbers and yields band structures consistent with those obtained with SCF methods in Quantum Espresso.

Excited state orbital optimization via minimizing the square of the gradient: General approach and application to singly and doubly excited states via density functional theory

Abstract:We present a general approach to converge excited state solutions to any quantum chemistry orbital optimization process, without the risk of variational collapse. The resulting Square Gradient Minimization (SGM) approach only requires analytic energy/Lagrangian orbital gradients and merely costs 3 times as much as ground state orbital optimization (per iteration), when implemented via a finite difference approach. SGM is applied to both single determinant $\Delta$SCF and spin-purified Restricted Open-Shell Kohn-Sham (ROKS) approaches to study the accuracy of orbital optimized DFT excited states. It is found that SGM can converge challenging states where the Maximum Overlap Method (MOM) or analogues either collapse to the ground state or fail to converge. We also report that $\Delta$SCF/ROKS predict highly accurate excitation energies for doubly excited states (which are inaccessible via TDDFT). Singly excited states obtained via ROKS are also found to be quite accurate, especially for Rydberg states that frustrate (semi)local TDDFT. Our results suggest that orbital optimized excited state DFT methods can be used to push past the limitations of TDDFT to doubly excited, charge-transfer or Rydberg states, making them a useful tool for the practical quantum chemist's toolbox for studying excited states in large systems.

Abstract:In this work, three versions of self-consistent field/Kohn-Sham density functional theory (SCF/KS-DFT) orbital optimization are described and benchmarked. The methods are a modified version of the geometry version of the direct inversion in the iterative subspace approach (which we call r-GDIIS), the modified restricted step rational function optimization method (RS-RFO), and the novel subspace gradient-enhanced Kriging method combined with restricted variance optimization (S-GEK/RVO). The modifications introduced are aimed at improving the robustness and computational scaling of the procedures. In particular, the subspace approach in S-GEK/RVO allows the application to SCF/KS-DFT optimization of a machine learning technique that has proven to be successful in geometry optimizations. The performance of the three methods is benchmarked for a large number of small- to medium-sized organic molecules, at equilibrium structures and close to a transition state, and a second set of molecules containing closed- and open-shell transition metals. The results indicate the importance of the resetting technique in boosting the performance of the r-GDIIS procedure. Moreover, it is demonstrated that already at the inception of the subspace version of GEK to optimize SCF wave functions, it displays superior and robust convergence properties as compared to those of the standard state-of-the-art SCF/KS-DFT optimization methods.

Abstract:A new direct constrained optimization algorithm for minimizing the Kohn–Sham (KS) total energy functional is presented in this paper. The key ingredients of this algorithm involve projecting the total energy functional into a sequence of subspaces of small dimensions and seeking the minimizer of total energy functional within each subspace. The minimizer of a subspace energy functional not only provides a search direction along which the KS total energy functional decreases but also gives an optimal “step-length” to move along this search direction. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that this new direct constrained optimization algorithm can be more efficient than the self-consistent field (SCF) iteration.
Direct determination of optimal real-space orbitals for correlated electronic structure of molecules

Abstract:We demonstrate how to determine numerically nearly exact orthonormal orbitals that are optimal for evaluation of the energy of arbitrary (correlated) states of atoms and molecules by minimization of the energy Lagrangian. Orbitals are expressed in real space using a multiresolution spectral element basis that is refined adaptively to achieve the user-specified target precision while avoiding the ill-conditioning issues that plague AO basis set expansions traditionally used for correlated models of molecular electronic structure. For light atoms, the orbital solver, in conjunction with a variational electronic structure model [selected Configuration Interaction(CI)] provides energies of comparable precision to a state-of-the-art atomic CI solver. The computed electronic energies of atoms and molecules are significantly more accurate than the counterparts obtained with the Gaussian AO bases of the same rank, and can be determined even when linear dependence issues preclude the use of the AO bases. It is feasible to optimize more than 100 fully-correlated numerical orbitals on a single computer node, and significant room exists for additional improvement. These findings suggest that the real-space orbital representations might be the preferred alternative to AO representations for high-end models of correlated electronic states of molecules and materials.

Enhancing Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory Calculations by Coupling Orbital and Occupation Optimizations

Abstract:Reduced density matrix functional theory (RDMFT) calculations are usually implemented in a decoupled manner, where the orbital and occupation optimizations are repeated alternately. Typically, orbital updates are performed using the unitary optimization method, while occupations are optimized through the explicit-by-implicit (EBI) method. The EBI method addresses explicit constraints by incorporating implicit functions, effectively transforming constrained optimization scenarios into unconstrained minimizations. Although the unitary and EBI methods individually achieve robust performance in optimizing orbitals and occupations, respectively, the decoupled optimization methods often suffer from slow convergence and require dozens of alternations between the orbital and occupation optimizations. To address this issue, this work proposes a coupled optimization method that combines unitary and EBI optimizations to update orbitals and occupations simultaneously at each step. To achieve favorable convergence in coupled optimization using a simple first-order algorithm, an effective and efficient preconditioner and line search are further introduced. The superiority of the new method is demonstrated through numerous tests on different molecules, random initial guesses, different basis sets and different functionals. It outperforms all decoupled optimization methods in terms of convergence speed, convergence results and convergence stability. Even a large system like $\mathrm{C_{60}}$ can converge to $10^{-8}$ au in 154 iterations, which shows that the coupled optimization method can make RDMFT more practical and facilitate its wider application and further development.

Abstract:The self-consistent field (SCF) iteration, widely used for computing the ground state energy and the corresponding single particle wave functions associated with a many-electron atomistic system, is viewed in this paper as an optimization procedure that minimizes the Kohn-Sham (KS) total energy indirectly by minimizing a sequence of quadratic surrogate functions. We point out the similarity and difference between the total energy and the surrogate, and show how the SCF iteration can fail when the minimizer of the surrogate produces an increase in the KS total energy. A trust region technique is introduced as a way to restrict the update of the wave functions within a small neighborhood of an approximate solution at which the gradient of the total energy agrees with that of the surrogate. The use of trust regions in SCF is not new. However, it has been observed that directly applying a trust region-based SCF (TRSCF) to the KS total energy often leads to slow convergence. We propose to use TRSCF within a direct constrained minimization (DCM) algorithm we developed in [J. Comput. Phys., 217 ( 2006), pp. 709 - 721]. The key ingredients of the DCM algorithm involve projecting the total energy function into a sequence of subspaces of small dimensions and seeking the minimizer of the total energy function within each subspace. The minimizer of a subspace energy function, which is computed by the TRSCF, not only provides a search direction along which the KS total energy function decreases, but also gives an optimal "step length" that yields a sufficient decrease in total energy. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate that the combination of TRSCF and DCM is more efficient than SCF.

Abstract:AIM We have previously demonstrated that hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is efficiently released into the culture medium in insect cells. The objective of this study is to characterize the HCV core secretion in insect cells. METHODS We constructed recombinant baculoviruses expressing various-length of mutant core proteins, expressed these proteins in insect cells, and examined core protein secretion in insect cells. RESULTS Only wild type core was efficiently released into the culture medium, although the protein expression level of wild type core was lower than those of other mutant core proteins. We found that the shorter form of the core construct expressed the higher level of protein. However, if more than 18 amino acids of the core were truncated at the C-terminus, core proteins were no longer secreted into the culture medium. Membrane flotation data show that the secreted core proteins are associated with the cellular membrane protein, indicating that HCV core is secreted as a membrane complex. CONCLUSION The C-terminal 18 amino acids of HCV core were crucial for core secretion into the culture media. Since HCV replication occurs on lipid raft membrane structure, these results suggest that HCV may utilize a unique core release mechanism to escape immune surveillance, thereby potentially representing the feature of HCV morphogenesis.
Orbital-Free Density Functional Theory with Continuous Normalizing Flows

Abstract:Orbital-free density functional theory (OF-DFT) provides an alternative approach for calculating the molecular electronic energy, relying solely on the electron density. In OF-DFT, both the ground-state density is optimized variationally to minimize the total energy functional while satisfying the normalization constraint. In this work, we introduce a novel approach by parameterizing the electronic density with a normalizing flow ansatz, which is also optimized by minimizing the total energy functional. Our model successfully replicates the electronic density for a diverse range of chemical systems, including a one-dimensional diatomic molecule, specifically Lithium hydride with varying interatomic distances, as well as comprehensive simulations of hydrogen and water molecules, all conducted in Cartesian space.

Qubit Count Reduction by Orthogonally-Constrained Orbital Optimization for Variational Quantum Excited States Solvers

Abstract:We propose a state-averaged orbital optimization scheme for improving the accuracy of excited states of the electronic structure Hamiltonian for use on near-term quantum computers. Instead of parameterizing the orbital rotation operator in the conventional fashion as an exponential of an anti-hermitian matrix, we parameterize the orbital rotation as a general partial unitary matrix. Whereas conventional orbital optimization methods minimize the state-averaged energy using successive Newton steps of the second-order Taylor expansion of the energy, the method presented here optimizes the state-averaged energy using an orthogonally-constrained gradient projection method which does not require any expansion approximations. Through extensive benchmarking of the method on various small molecular systems, we find that the method is capable of producing more accurate results than fixed basis FCI while simultaneously using fewer qubits. In particular, we show that for $\mathrm{H_2}$, the method is capable of matching the accuracy of FCI in the cc-pVTZ basis (56 qubits) while only using 14 qubits.

Abstract:We present a linear-scaling method for electronic structure computations in the context of Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). The method is based on a subspace iteration, and takes advantage of the nonorthogonal formulation of the Kohn-Sham functional, and the improved localization properties of nonorthogonal wave functions. A one-dimensional linear problem is presented as a benchmark for the analysis of linear-scaling algorithms for Kohn-Sham DFT. Using this one-dimensional model, we study the convergence properties of the localized subspace-iteration algorithm presented. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm for practical applications by performing fully three-dimensional computations of the electronic density of alkane chains.
Developing Orbital-Dependent Corrections for the Non-Additive Kinetic Energy in Subsystem Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present a novel route to constructing cost-efficient semi-empirical approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy in subsystem density functional theory. The developed methodology is based on the use of Slater determinants composed of non-orthogonal Kohn$\unicode{x2013}$Sham-like orbitals for the evaluation of kinetic energy expectation values and the expansion of the inverse molecular-orbital overlap matrix into a Neumann series. Applying these techniques, we derived and implemented a series of orbital-dependent approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy, which are employed self-consistently. Our proof-of-principle computations demonstrated quantitatively correct results for potential energy curves and electron densities and hinted on the applicability of the introduced empirical parameters to different types of molecular systems and intermolecular interactions. We therefore conclude that the presented study is an important step towards constructing accurate and efficient orbital-dependent approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy applicable to large molecular systems.

Abstract:Orbital optimization procedure is widely called in electronic structure simulation. To efficiently find the orbital optimization solution, we developed a new second order orbital optimization algorithm, co-iteration augmented Hessian (CIAH) method. In this method, the orbital optimization is embedded in the diagonalization procedure for augmented Hessian (AH) eigenvalue equation. Approximations for Hessian matrix can be easily employed in this method to improve the computational costs. We numerically performed the CIAH algorithm with SCF convergence of 20 challenging systems and Boys localization of C60 molecule. We found that CIAH algorithm has better SCF convergence and less computational costs than direct inversion iterative subspace (DIIS) algorithm. The numerical tests suggest that CIAH is a stable, reliable and efficient algorithm for orbital optimization problem.
Structure Optimization with Stochastic Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Linear-scaling techniques for Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) are essential to describe the ground state properties of extended systems. Still, these techniques often rely on the locality of the density matrix or on accurate embedding approaches, limiting their applicability. In contrast, stochastic density functional theory (sDFT) achieves linear- and sub-linear-scaling by statistically sampling the ground state density without relying on embedding or imposing localization. In return, ground state observables, such as the forces on the nuclei, fluctuate in sDFT, making the optimization of the nuclear structure a highly non-trivial problem. In this work, we combine the most recent noise-reduction schemes for sDFT with stochastic optimization algorithms to perform structure optimization within sDFT. We compare the performance of the stochastic gradient descent (sGD) approach and its variations (stochastic gradient descent with momentum (sGDM)) to stochastic optimization techniques that rely on the Hessian, such as the stochastic Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (sBFGS) algorithm. We further provide a detailed assessment of the computational efficiency and its dependence on the optimization parameters for each methods for determining the ground state structure of bulk silicon with varying supercell dimensions.

Abstract:A pseudo-diagonalization (PD) algorithm based on the annihilation of the occupied-virtual Kohn-Sham matrix elements is developed in the framework of auxiliary density functional theory (ADFT). The working equations are presented, and their parallel implementation in deMon2k is discussed. To avoid any matrix diagonalization in the PD ADFT self-consistent field (SCF) calculations, the pseudo-diagonalization of the Kohn-Sham matrix is accompanied by the iterative density fitting with the MINRES approach. In order to explore the sparsity of the ADFT Kohn-Sham matrix, localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) are used. Our analysis of the PD ADFT SCF shows that the LMOs remain localized throughout the SCF. Surprisingly, we found this behavior not only for naturally localizable systems such as alkane chains and water clusters but also for less localizable systems such as fullerenes and hydrogen saturated graphene sheets. Despite the very different extensions of the converged molecular orbitals in PD and Roothaan-Hall ADFT SCF calculations, both methods yield, within the given SCF tolerance, nearly identical converged SCF energies.

An Efficient Algorithm for Constrained CASSCF(1,2) and CASSCF(3,2) Simulations as Relevant to Electron and Hole Transfer Problems

Abstract:We propose an efficient algorithm for the recently published electron/hole-transfer Dynamical-weighted State-averaged Constrained CASSCF (eDSC/hDSC) method studying charge transfer states and D$_1$-D$_0$ crossings for systems with odd numbers of electrons. By separating the constrained minimization problem into an unconstrained self-consistent-field (SCF) problem and a constrained non-self-consistent-field (nSCF) problem, and accelerating the direct inversion in the iterative subspace (DIIS) technique to solve the SCF problem, the overall computational cost is reduced by a factor of 8 to 20 compared with directly using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). This approach should be applicable for other constrained minimization problems and, in the immediate future, once gradients are available, the present eDSC/hDSC algorithm should allow for speedy non-adiabatic dynamics simulations.

The role of orbital angular momentum constraints in the variational optimization of the two-electron reduced-density matrix

Abstract:The direct variational determination of the two-electron reduced-density matrix (2-RDM) is usually carried out under the assumption that the 2-RDM is a real-valued quantity. However, in systems that possess orbital angular momentum symmetry, the description of states with a well-defined, non-zero z-projection of the orbital angular momentum requires a complex-valued 2-RDM. We consider a semidefinite program suitable for the direct optimization of a complex-valued 2-RDM and explore the role of orbital angular momentum constraints in systems that possess the relevant symmetries. For atomic systems, constraints on the expectation values of the square and z-projection of the orbital angular momentum operator allow one to optimize 2-RDMs for multiple orbital angular momentum states. Similarly, in linear molecules, orbital angular momentum projection constraints enable the description of multiple electronic states, and, moreover, for states with a non-zero z-projection of the orbital angular momentum, the use of complex-valued quantities is essential for a qualitatively correct description of the electronic structure. For example, in the case of molecular oxygen, we demonstrate that orbital angular momentum constraints are necessary to recover the correct energy ordering of the lowest-energy singlet and triplet states near the equilibrium geometry. However, care must still be taken in the description of the dissociation limit, as the 2-RDM-based approach is not size consistent, and the size-consistency error varies dramatically, depending on the z-projections of the spin and orbital angular momenta.
