Abstract:The primary objective of the current research was to determine the effectiveness of positive-focused mindfulness therapy on mental well-being, quality of life, and stress coping strategies in women diagnosed with bipolar disorder in Kashan city. This study was conducted as a quasi-experimental research with pre-test, post-test alongside a control group, and the research population included all women diagnosed with bipolar disorder attending psychiatric centers in Kashan. Initially, registration was carried out by contacting individuals who had records in these centers or were referred by specialists, and 30 of them, who met the study criteria, were selected. The sample was randomly divided into experimental and control groups, and the study was conducted on them. The positive-focused mindfulness therapy consisted of 12 sessions of 90 minutes of mindfulness training derived from the protocol by Tabatabai Nejad et al. (2018). Meanwhile, the control group did not receive any form of training. This research was concluded in March 2023. The instruments used in this study included the 26-item Quality of Life questionnaire (1996), the 45-item Mental Well-being questionnaire by Keyes and Magyar-Moe (2003), and the 18-item Life Stress questionnaire (1993). Variance analysis was employed to test the hypotheses in this study. The results showed that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group in comparison to the control group in terms of quality of life, mental well-being, and stress coping strategies (P<0.01). The findings from this research indicate the impact of positive-focused mindfulness therapy in improving the quality of life, mental well-being, and stress in women with bipolar disorder. Therefore, positive-focused mindfulness therapy, alongside other therapeutic methods, can be effective in improving the psychological symptoms of women with bipolar disorder.

Abstract:Premenstrual syndrome is characterized by physical and psychological symptoms that negatively affect daily functioning. This study investigated the effect of a psychoeducation program based on cognitive-behavioral psychodrama techniques on premenstrual syndrome symptoms. This study utilized a 2 × 2 pretest-posttest, experimental-control group research design. The sample consisted of 32 participants randomized into experimental ( n = 16) and control ( n = 16) groups. The experimental group participated in a seven-session psychoeducation program based on cognitive-behavioral psychodrama techniques. Data were collected using a personal information questionnaire and the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). The experimental group demonstrated a significantly lower median posttest PMSS total and 'depressive affect', 'fatigue', 'irritability', 'depressive thoughts', 'changes in appetite' and 'changes in sleeping habits' subscale scores than the pretest score ( p < .05). Moreover, the experimental group had a significantly lower median posttest 'anxiety' score than the control group ( p = .021). A psychoeducational program based on cognitive-behavioral and psychodrama techniques can be used as an effective therapeutic intervention to relieve or managing premenstrual symptoms.

Abstract:Background: Mental health is a significant component of academic achievement, while psychological distress can reduce academic performance. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on subjective well-being and psychological distress of Kerman University of Medical Sciences students. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the study population included all Kerman University of Medical Sciences students in 2020. The study sample consisted of 30 university students randomly divided into two groups: Control (n = 15) and experimental (n = 15), using convenience sampling. The experimental group received eight 90-minute MBCT sessions biweekly. The research tools included the Subjective Well-being Scale (SWS) and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The data were analyzed with SPSS version 22. Results: The mean posttest scores of emotional, psychological, and social well-being were 3.56 ± 0.31, 4.46 ± 0.32, and 5.70 ± 0.42 in the experimental group and 2.64 ± 0.40, 4.00 ± 0.37, and 3.11 ± 0.35 in the control group, respectively. Moreover, the mean posttest scores for depression, anxiety, and stress were 1.64 ± 0.16, 1.19 ± 0.41, and 1.67 ± 0.15 in the experimental group and 3.10 ± 0.24, 3.55 ± 0.52, and 3.01 ± 0.24 in the control group, respectively. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy significantly improved the posttest scores of subjective well-being subscales (emotional, psychological, and social well-being). Moreover, depression, anxiety, and stress decreased significantly in the experimental group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effectively reduced psychological distress and improved subjective well-being in university students.

Abstract:This study's purpose is to determine the effect of mindfulness-based psycho-education program for parents of children with leukemia on ruminative thought, perceived stress, and well-being. This experimental randomized controlled study was adopted with the parents of children. Mindfulness-based psychoeducation program was applied on online platform with parents. After the intervention, ruminative thinking styles, perceived stress levels and well-being levels of the parents in the experimental group were found to be significantly different from the control group (p < 0.05). The mindfulness-based psychoeducation program applied in this study was found to be effective in reducing ruminative thinking and perceived stress in parents of children diagnosed with leukemia. It was also concluded that the program was effective in maintaining parents' level of well-being.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Mindfulness as an intervention approach in mental health has been increasingly used to promote health in young people. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness training on coping with stress, test anxiety, and happiness to promote health in female high school students.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The design of this study was quasi-experimental with control group, with pretest and posttest. The statistical population of the study included all the female students studying in the secondary high school in the city of Sanandaj in Iran with 2890 students, 40 of whom were selected by simple random sampling method and were randomly assigned to the experimental (20 individuals) and control groups (20 individuals). Participants completed the Oxford Happiness (0.79), Sarason Exam Anxiety (0.87), and Andler and Parker Stress Management (0.81) Questionnaires. The method of intervention was training based on mindfulness. Data were analyzed using covariance analysis.RESULTS: The results showed that in the posttest, a significant difference was seen between the mean scores of the participants of the experimental and control groups in the variables of problem-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidant coping variables (P < 0.05). In addition, the results showed that in the posttest, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of test anxiety; happiness; and happiness components including life satisfaction, self-esteem, active well-being, satisfaction, and positive mood (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the present study, it can be said that mindfulness training is an effective intervention to improve coping styles, test anxiety, and happiness in students.

Abstract:The inability to cope successfully with the enormous stress of medical education may lead to a cascade of consequences at both a personal and professional level. The present study examined the short-term effects of an 8-week meditation-based stress reduction intervention on premedical and medical students using a well-controlled statistical design. Findings indicate that participation in the intervention can effectively (1) reduce self-reported state and trait anxiety, (2) reduce reports of overall psychological distress including depression, (3) increase scores on overall empathy levels, and (4) increase scores on a measure of spiritual experiences assessed at termination of intervention. These results (5) replicated in the wait-list control group, (6) held across different experiments, and (7) were observed during the exam period. Future research should address potential long-term effects of mindfulness training for medical and premedical students.

Abstract:Abstract Background Early life stress (ELS) has been linked to poor mental and physical health outcomes in adolescence and adulthood. Mindfulness reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety and improves cognitive and social outcomes in both youth and adults. However, little is known whether mindfulness can mitigate against the adverse neurobiological and psychological effects of ELS. This study aimed to examine the feasibility of conducting a group mindfulness intervention in adolescents with ELS and provide preliminary indication of potential effects on stress-related biomarkers and mental health symptoms. Methods Forty adolescents were randomized to receive either eight sessions of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Teens in group format (MBSR-T; n = 21) or Treatment as Usual Control group (CTRL; n = 17). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and follow-up and included measures associated with neurobiological functioning (immune and endocrine biomarkers) and self-reported mental health (depressive) symptoms. Linear mixed effects models were used to assess the effects of group and time on these outcome measures. Results Sixteen of the 21 adolescents completed the intervention, attending an average of 6.5 sessions. The model examining cortisol responses to stress induction revealed medium effects trending toward significance (Cohen’s d = .56) for anticipatory cortisol levels in the MBSR-T relative to CTRL groups. No significant effects were found in models examining C-reactive protein or interleukin 6 inflammatory markers. The model examining depressive symptoms revealed a medium effect for symptom reduction (Cohen’s d = .69) in the MBSR-T relative to CTRL groups. Conclusions This study demonstrated feasibility of conducting a group-based MBSR-T intervention for adolescents with ELS. There was some evidence for efficacy on a symptom level with potential subtle changes on a biological level. Future larger studies are needed to determine the efficacy of group-based mindfulness interventions in this population. Trial registration Identifier # NCT03633903 , registered 16/08/2018.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of mindfulness and positive psychology training on reappraisal and suppression in students with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. Methods and Materials: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test, three-group design, and a three-month follow-up period. The population of this research consisted of female high school students in Tehran with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. A total of 45 students with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms were selected through a multi-stage cluster sampling method and purposeful sampling based on the scores obtained from the Spitzer et al. (2006) scale and randomly assigned to three groups (two experimental groups and one control group). All three groups completed the Gross and John (2003) Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. The first group received mindfulness training, the second group received positive psychology training in eight sessions of 1.5 hours each, and the control group did not receive any treatment. The data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and follow-up LSD test. Findings: The findings indicated that there was no significant difference between the effects of mindfulness and positive psychology training on reappraisal and suppression (p>0.5). Conclusion: Based on the results, in students with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, both mindfulness and positive psychology training were beneficial.

Abstract:Background and aims: Subjective well-being as a major prerequisite of health ensures mental and physical health, a long life, happiness, improved quality of life, and higher socioeconomic indices. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on subjective well-being, psychological distress, and emotion regulation in medical science students. Methods: The statistical population of this semi-experimental comprised all female students at Kerman University of Medical Sciences (Iran) in the academic year of 2019-2020. Forty-five students referring to the university counseling center were selected as the sample of the study using convenience sampling and randomly divided into two experimental groups and a control group (n=15 per group). The first and second experimental groups underwent eight 90- and 45-sessions (twice a week) of MBCT and of ACT, respectively. The research instruments included the Subjective Well-being Scale (SWS), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Results: The results showed that MBCT and ACT were effective in improving the components of subjective well-being and emotion regulation in medical students (P<0.001). Moreover, MBCT and ACT significantly reduced the post-test scores of psychological distress subscales in the experimental group compared to the control group (P<0.001). Finally, no difference was observed between the two therapies in terms of effectiveness. Conclusion: According to the results, MBCT and ACT effectively promoted female students’ subjective well-being and emotion regulation and alleviated their psychological distress.

Abstract:Adolescents often take an inappropriate approach to eating to confront critical stress during puberty, which might, in turn, result in inefficient nutritional attitudes. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on the dimensions of affective control in adolescent girls with dysfunctional eating attitudes. The population of this experimental study included 200 high school girls in the third educational zone of Isfahan, Iran, of whom 30 were selected by convenience sampling, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the MBSR intervention and were followed up 40 days after the end of the treatment. The data were collected by the Eating Attitude Test and Affective Control Scale and were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed the efficacy of MBSR on affective control in adolescent girls with dysfunctional eating attitudes. It might be concluded that MBSR can be effective in improving the mental health of adolescent girls with dysfunctional eating attitudes. In fact, mindfulness might influence an individual’s emotional and behavioral responses by altering the distorted thought processes that form the basis of the general aspects of well-being, especially mental health.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program's impact on university students' mental health. Participants: Undergraduate and graduate students. Methods: Ninety participants completed pre-, mid-, and post-program surveys. Mindfulness, Satisfaction with Life, Psychological Distress, and Perceived Stress scores were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and pairwise comparisons. Additionally, 115 participants completed post-survey open-ended responses addressing their subjective experiences, which were thematically examined. Results: Participants showed significant improvements in all outcome measures from pre- to post- [p < 0.001] and mid- to post-program [p < 0.05]. All measures, except Satisfaction with Life, showed significant improvement from pre- to mid-program. Participants reported high program satisfaction. Facilitators of the participants' practice included program structure, perception of outcomes, and group setting; however, busy schedules posed a prominent barrier. Conclusion: This evaluation supports MBSR as a public health, group-based approach to improving students' mental health and building a more positive campus community.

The effects of mindfulness-based techniques on self-rumination, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression among patients with major depression: a nursing perspective

Abstract:Background: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) often struggle with adaptive strategies like self-reflection and cognitive reappraisal, relying instead on maladaptive ones like self-rumination and emotional suppression. Mindfulness-based techniques (MBTs) have been identified as a promising complementary psychological intervention for this population. Aims: To evaluate the effects of MBTs on mindful attention awareness, self-rumination, self-reflection, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression in patients with MDD between patients who receive MBTs and those who do not. Methods: This quasi-experimental research was carried out at the Psychiatric Outpatient Clinics. A representative sample of 120 patients with MDD were randomly recruited to either a study group (n = 60) or a control group (n = 60). The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), The Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire (RRQ) and The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) were utilised to collect data. Results: After participation in MBTs, the study group had significantly greater improvements in the mean scores of MAAS, RRQ, Cognitive Reappraisal and Expressive Suppression compared to the control group (p < 0.001 each). Recommendations: The study recommends developing and implementing training programmes for nurses to equip them with the skills and knowledge to effectively deliver MBTs as part of patient care. Conducting longitudinal studies is necessary to assess the sustainability of these improvements.
The effects of positive psychology and physical activity on depression, anxiety, and stress among students with premenstrual syndrome: a single-blind, randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background: Premenstrual syndrome affects many women in their reproductive years and often disrupts their social connections and work. This study aimed to compare the effects of positive psychology and physical activity on depression, anxiety, and stress among students with premenstrual syndrome. Methods: In this four-group parallel clinical trial with blinded data analysis, 120 eligible students who experienced premenstrual syndrome were recruited based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and randomly allocated to four groups (n = 30) including three experiment groups as positive psychology, physical activity, and positive psychology, physical activity, and control group, using a simple randomization method. All four groups completed premenstrual syndrome screening and the DASS-21 questionnaire before the intervention. Then, the positive psychology intervention group received eight sessions of 70-90 min weekly intervention, the second group received eight weeks of aerobic physical activity intervention, and the third group received positive psychology and physical activity intervention for eight weeks. The control group did not receive any interventions. The DASS-21 was completed immediately after the intervention and two months later by all four groups. In this study, the participants and investigators were not blinded; however, the analysts were. The recruitment process took place from September 2018 to March 2019. One hundred twenty participants fulfilled the study. The Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS (v18). Results: Before and immediately after the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in depression, anxiety, and stress mean scores among the positive psychology, physical activity, positive psychology, and physical activity and control groups (p ≥ 0.05). However, two months after the intervention, a significant difference was observed between the four groups so there was a difference between the scores of the three intervention groups and the control group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between positive psychology, and physical activity groups. No significant adverse events or side effects were observed. Conclusion: Our findings supported the use of aerobic physical activity and educational interventions based on positive psychology as non-pharmacologic interventions to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. This research should be replicated in different settings. Abstract:AIM & BACKGROUND: Diabetes is one of the most prevalent and costly chronic diseases that imposes many limitations on the activities of the patient. Stress reduction treatment based on mindfulness is an intervention which is used in mind-body medicine in order to reduce mental and physical disorders in patients with chronic diseases. So, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of stress reduction treatment based on mindfulness on emotion regulation problems and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.METHODS & MATERIALS: The paper is an experimental study based on control and treatment groups with pre-test and post-test. 34 male and female patients with type 2 diabetes having at least high education, from Molasadra Clinic of Isfahan, were selected and were placed randomly in two groups of control (N=17) and treatment(N=17). Pre-test stage was done for both two groups by cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire (CERQ) and also by means of Glucometer to measure glycemic of patients. The treatment group for 8 sessions of 2 hours (once a week) was placed under the training of mindfulness-based stress reduction intervention. Afterwards, the post-test was done for both groups. The obtained data using SPSS software version 20 and multivariate analysis of covariance were analyzed.FINDINGS: The findings showed that MBSR had effect on emotion regulation problems, and glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes.CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of results, MBSR can have positive impact on emotion regulation problems, and glycemic control of patients.

Abstract:Research has shown that mindfulness-based treatment interventions may be effective for a range of mental and physical health disorders in adult populations, but little is known about the effectiveness of such interventions for treating adolescent conditions. The present randomized clinical trial was designed to assess the effect of the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program for adolescents age 14 to 18 years with heterogeneous diagnoses in an outpatient psychiatric facility (intent-to-treat N = 102). Relative to treatment-as-usual control participants, those receiving MBSR self-reported reduced symptoms of anxiety, depression, and somatic distress, and increased self-esteem and sleep quality. Of clinical significance, the MBSR group showed a higher percentage of diagnostic improvement over the 5-month study period and significant increases in global assessment of functioning scores relative to controls, as rated by condition-naïve clinicians. These results were found in both completer and intent-to-treat samples. The findings provide evidence that MBSR may be a beneficial adjunct to outpatient mental health treatment for adolescents.

Abstract:Aim: The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of cognitive therapy based on mindfulness on emotional self-awareness, empathy and self-compassion in psychotherapy trainees. Methods: It was a quasi-experimental research with a pre-test-post-test design with two experimental and control groups and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population of the research consisted of all female psychotherapist trainees in Tehran in 2021, who were selected by the available sampling method and randomly replaced in two groups of 15 people. Data collection was done with Rifi et al.'s emotional self-awareness questionnaire (2008), Mehrabian and Epstein's empathy questionnaire (1972), and Neff's self-compassion questionnaire (2003). For each of the experimental groups, a cognitive therapy intervention program based on Bowen and Marlatt (2011) was held in the form of weekly sessions. In addition to descriptive statistics, data analysis was performed with mixed analysis of variance and Bonferroni’s post hoc test. Results: The results showed that in the post-test period, between the average scores of empathy (P<0.001), emotional awareness (P<0.001), and self-compassion (P<0.001) of the company group There is a statistically significant difference between the participants in the intervention sessions compared to the control group. The effectiveness of the two intervention methods was stable over time in the subjects of the experimental groups. Conclusion: Based on the results of the research, conducting psychological interventions for the preparation of psychotherapy trainees is very important and can be a basis for raising awareness and correctly applying these interventions in psychotherapy trainees.
The Effectiveness of a Synchronous Online Mindfulness-Based Intervention on the Attentional Control and Mindfulness of Turkish Late Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study

Abstract:Journal of Adolescent Research, Ahead of Print. The primary goal of this study was to examine the effects of a synchronous online mindfulness-based psychoeducation program on attentional control and mindfulness levels of Turkish late adolescents and the intervention experiences of the participants. A sample of adolescents (n = 40, Mage 16.7) was randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. There were 10 participants in each four groups. The embedded design with a convergent approach was used. The quantitive data were obtained using the Solomon four group design while the qualitative data were obtained with phenomenological approach. The mindfulness-based intervention consisting of eight sessions and seven workshops was applied online to the experimental groups. The findings revealed that the attentional control and mindfulness levels of the adolescents in the experimental groups were significantly higher compared to the adolescents in the control groups. Regarding the qualitative findings, the adolescents stated that there were improvements in their levels of attentional control, regulating emotions, self-knowledge, self-confidence, optimism, effective communication skills, academic achievement and motivation to study after the program. The findings of the follow-up test showed that improvements in attentional control and mindfulness levels of the adolescents persisted for 8 weeks. The findings showed that the mindfulness-based intervention is a promising tool for late adolescents.

Abstract:Background. Student mental health has become a significant concern in education, especially given the increasing academic and social pressures they face. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) techniques effectively reduce stress and improve mental well-being in various populations. However, their application in educational settings is still relatively new and requires further research to understand their impact. Purpose. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MBSR techniques in improving students’ mental health and learning ability in educational environments. A key focus was to measure changes in stress levels, emotional well-being, and academic performance before and after the MBSR intervention. Method. This study used an experimental design with a control group. The study sample consisted of 100 high school students divided into two groups: an intervention group that received MBSR sessions for eight weeks and a control group that did not receive an intervention. Data were collected using stress scale questionnaires, emotional well-being scales, and academic performance records before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistical techniques and independent t-tests to compare results between the two groups. Results. The results showed that students who attended the MBSR program experienced a significant reduction in stress levels and improved emotional well-being compared to the control group. In addition, the student’s academic performance in the intervention group also showed better improvement than the control group, although this improvement was not statistically significant. Conclusion. This study concludes that MBSR techniques effectively reduce stress and improve students’ emotional well-being in educational settings. Although the improvement in academic performance was not statistically significant, these findings point to the potential of MBSR as a beneficial approach to improving students’ mental health and learning ability. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of MBSR and the optimization of its application in educational contexts.
The effect of mindfulness-based art therapy on psychological symptoms and happiness levels in patients with migraine: a pilot study

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Program on the depression, anxiety and stress symptoms, and happiness of participants. This study is a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest design. The independent variable of the study was the Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Program, which was applied to the study group between the pretest and posttest. The dependent variables of the study were the depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and happiness of the individuals included in the study group. The study group consisted of a total of 10 participants (8 females and 2 males) between the ages of 24 and 46, who met the inclusion criteria. The Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Oxford Happiness Scale Short Form (OHS-SF) were applied to the participants both at the beginning of the study and at the end of 8 weeks. A total of 8 sessions of the Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Program were applied to the study group. Each session lasted 180 min. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to analyze the data obtained to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The analyses showed that the Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Program was effective in reducing the depression and stress symptoms of the participants and increasing their happiness but was not effective in reducing their anxiety symptoms. In conclusion, although positive clinical findings were observed in this pilot study, more studies are needed to confirm these findings about the Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Program as an alternative treatment method for patients with migraine.
