Abstract:Navigating an odor landscape is a critical behavior for the survival of many species, including mice. An ethologically relevant mouse behavior is locating food using information about odor concentration. To approximate this behavior, we used an open field odor-based spot-finding task indoors with little wind, examining navigation strategies as mice search for and approach an odor source. After mice were trained to navigate to odor sources paired with food reward, we observed behavioral changes consistent with localization 10–45 cm away from the source. These behaviors included orientation toward the source, decreased velocity, and increased exploration time. We also found that the amplitude of 'casting,' which we define as lateral back and forth movement of the nose, increased with proximity to the source. Based on these observations, we created a concentration-sensitive agent-based model to simulate mouse behavior. This model provided evidence for a binaral-sniffing strategy (inter-nostril comparison of concentration in a single sniff) and a serial-sniffing strategy (sampling concentration, moving in space, and then sampling again). Serial-sniffing may be accomplished at farther distances by moving the body and at closer distances by moving the head (casting). Together, these results elucidate components of behavioral strategies for odor-based navigation.

Collective olfactory search in a turbulent environment

Abstract:Finding the distant source of an odor dispersed by a turbulent flow is a vital task for many organisms, either for foraging or for mating purposes. At the level of individual search, animals like moths have developed effective strategies to solve this very difficult navigation problem based on the noisy detection of odor concentration and wind velocity alone. When many individuals concurrently perform the same olfactory search task, without any centralized control, sharing information about the decisions made by the members of the group can potentially increase the performance. But how much of this information is actually valuable and exploitable for the collective task ? Here we show that, in a model of a swarm of agents inspired by moth behavior, there is an optimal way to blend the private information about odor and wind detections with the publicly available information about other agents' heading direction. At optimality, the time required for the first agent to reach the source is essentially the shortest flight time from the departure point to the target. Conversely, agents who discard public information are several fold slower and groups that do not put enough weight on private information perform even worse. Our results then suggest an efficient multi-agent olfactory search algorithm that could prove useful in robotics, for instance in the identification of sources of harmful volatile compounds.

Abstract:Locating the source of odor in a turbulent environment—a common behavior for living organisms—is nontrivial because of the random nature of mixing. Here we analyze the statistical physics aspects of the problem and propose an efficient strategy for olfactory search that can work in turbulent plumes. The algorithm combines the maximum likelihood inference of the source position with an active search. Our approach provides the theoretical basis for the design of olfactory robots and the quantitative tools for the analysis of the observed olfactory search behavior of living creatures (e.g., odor-modulated optomotor anemotaxis of moths).

Abstract:Olfactory navigation is observed across species and plays a crucial role in locating resources for survival. In the laboratory, understanding the behavioral strategies and neural circuits underlying odor-taxis requires a detailed understanding of the animal's sensory environment. For small model organisms like C. elegans and larval D. melanogaster, controlling and measuring the odor environment experienced by the animal can be challenging, especially for airborne odors, which are subject to subtle effects from airflow, temperature variation, and from the odor's adhesion, adsorption or reemission. Here we present a method to control and measure airborne odor concentration in an arena compatible with an agar substrate. Our method allows continuous controlling and monitoring of the odor profile while imaging animal behavior. We construct stationary chemical landscapes in an odor flow chamber through spatially patterned odorized air. The odor concentration is measured with a spatially distributed array of digital gas sensors. Careful placement of the sensors allows the odor concentration across the arena to be continuously inferred in space and monitored through time. We use this approach to measure the odor concentration that each animal experiences as it undergoes chemotaxis behavior and report chemotaxis strategies for C. elegans and D. melanogaster larvae populations as they navigate spatial odor landscapes.

Abstract:Estimating the distance to the odor source is crucial for olfactory navigation as it influences olfactory signals and navigation behavior. The derivative of a MOX gas sensors signal is considered to be associated with gas fluctuations, thereby enabling the estimation of the distance to the source. Derivatively-based methods require the calculation of differentials and can generate large amounts of data. In this study, a distance estimation method for odor sources is proposed based on spike encoding and the number of spike clusters with the cubic polynomial model. Results show that the proposed method reduces the data volume while retaining effective information. For the distance estimation of a sensor in a turbulent environment, the proposed method performs well in estimating source distance. The RMSE is 0.109 m. In conclusion, the proposed spike-based source estimation method demonstrates effective distance estimation with a single sensor for gas sources. This lays a foundation for research in gas source estimation and olfactory navigation.

Abstract:Robotic odor source localization (OSL) is a technology that enables mobile robots or autonomous vehicles to find an odor source in unknown environments. An effective navigation algorithm that guides the robot to approach the odor source is the key to successfully locating the odor source. While traditional OSL approaches primarily utilize an olfaction-only strategy, guiding robots to find the odor source by tracing emitted odor plumes, our work introduces a fusion navigation algorithm that combines both vision and olfaction-based techniques. This hybrid approach addresses challenges such as turbulent airflow, which disrupts olfaction sensing, and physical obstacles inside the search area, which may impede vision detection. In this work, we propose a hierarchical control mechanism that dynamically shifts the robot's search behavior among four strategies: crosswind maneuver, Obstacle-Avoid Navigation, Vision-Based Navigation, and Olfaction-Based Navigation. Our methodology includes a custom-trained deep-learning model for visual target detection and a moth-inspired algorithm for Olfaction-Based Navigation. To assess the effectiveness of our approach, we implemented the proposed algorithm on a mobile robot in a search environment with obstacles. Experimental results demonstrate that our Vision and Olfaction Fusion algorithm significantly outperforms vision-only and olfaction-only methods, reducing average search time by 54% and 30%, respectively.

Abstract:We consider the problem of olfactory searches in a turbulent environment. We focus on agents that respond solely to odor stimuli, with no access to spatial perception nor prior information about the odor location. We ask whether navigation strategies to a target can be learned robustly within a sequential decision making framework. We develop a reinforcement learning algorithm using a small set of interpretable olfactory states and train it with realistic turbulent odor cues. By introducing a temporal memory, we demonstrate that two salient features of odor traces, discretized in few olfactory states, are sufficient to learn navigation in a realistic odor plume. Performance is dictated by the sparse nature of turbulent plumes. An optimal memory exists which ignores blanks within the plume and activates a recovery strategy outside the plume. We obtain the best performance by letting agents learn their recovery strategy and show that it is mostly casting cross wind, similar to behavior observed in flying insects. The optimal strategy is robust to substantial changes in the odor plumes, suggesting minor parameter tuning may be sufficient to adapt to different environments.

Abstract:Animal behavior and neural recordings show that the brain is able to measure both the intensity of an odor and the timing of odor encounters. However, whether intensity or timing of odor detections is more informative for olfactory-driven behavior is not understood. To tackle this question, we consider the problem of locating a target using the odor it releases. We ask whether the position of a target is best predicted by measures of timing intensity of its odor, sampled for a short period of time. To answer this question, we feed data from accurate numerical simulations of odor transport to machine learning algorithms that learn how to connect odor to target location. We find that both intensity and timing can separately predict target location even from a distance of several meters; however their efficacy varies with the dilution of the odor in space. Thus organisms that use olfaction from different ranges may have to switch among different modalities. This has implications on how the brain should represent odors as the target is approached. We demonstrate simple strategies to improve accuracy and robustness of the prediction by modifying odor sampling and appropriately combining distinct measures together. To test the predictions, animal behavior and odor representation should be monitored as the animal moves relative to the target, or in virtual conditions that mimic concentrated dilute environments.

This paper presents algorithms for identifying the odour source of a chemical plume with significant filament intermittency and meander developed in fluid-advected environments. The algorithms are abstracted from moth-inspired chemical plume tracing strategies in two steps. First, we introduce the concept of the last chemical detection points that leads to construction of a source identification zone and development of two variations in the source identification algorithms. Second, we use Monte Carlo methods to optimise the proposed algorithms in a simulated environment. The evaluation results demonstrate that the optimised algorithm achieves a success rate of over 90% in identifying the source location, the average identification time is 3–4 min and the average error is 1–2 m surrounding the source location. 1. In order to develop the plume tracer for a natural fluid environment application, DARPA/ONR sponsored an interdisciplinary team to investigate biologically inspired chemical plume tracing (CPT) strategies under the CPT program (Cowen and Ward 2002). Grasso et al. (2000) implemented biomimetic strategies on their robot lobster to analyse chemotaxis-based algorithms and to evaluate biomimetic strategies. Grasso and Atema (2002) employed a single sensor or two sensors detecting fluorescence to compare the plume-tracing performance of three plume-tracing strategy variations. Abstract:Animals use stereo sampling of odor concentration to localize sources and follow odor trails. We analyze the dynamics of a bilateral model that depends on the simultaneous comparison between odor concentrations detected by left and right sensors. The general model consists of three differential equations for the positions in the plane and the heading. When the odor landscape is an infinite trail, then we reduce the dynamics to a planar system whose dynamics have just two fixed points. Using an integrable approximation (for short sensors) we estimate the basin of attraction. In the case of a radially symmetric landscape, we again can reduce the dynamics to a planar system, but the behavior is considerably richer with multi-stability, isolas, and limit cycles. As in the linear trail case, there is also an underlying integrable system when the sensors are short. In odor landscapes that consist of multiple spots and trail segments, we find periodic and chaotic dynamics and characterize the behavior on trails with gaps and that turn corners.

Abstract:Mobile robot olfaction of toxic and hazardous odor sources is of great significance in anti-terrorism, disaster prevention, and control scenarios. Aiming at the problems of low search efficiency and easily falling into a local optimum of the current odor source localization strategies, the paper proposes the adaptive space-aware Infotaxis II algorithm. To improve the tracking efficiency of robots, a new reward function is designed by considering the space information and emphasizing the exploration behavior of robots. Considering the enhancement in exploratory behavior, an adaptive navigation-updated mechanism is proposed to adjust the movement range of robots in real time through information entropy to avoid an excessive exploration behavior during the search process, which may lead the robot to fall into a local optimum. Subsequently, an improved adaptive cosine salp swarm algorithm is applied to confirm the optimal information adaptive parameter. Comparative simulation experiments between ASAInfotaxis II and the classical search strategies are carried out in 2D and 3D scenarios regarding the search efficiency and search behavior, which show that ASAInfotaxis II is competent to improve the search efficiency to a larger extent and achieves a better balance between exploration and exploitation behaviors.

Abstract:There is no generally applicable technique for finding the position of an autonomous mobile robot operating in an un structured or varying environment. This article describes a project to investigate the use of short-lived navigational mark ers consisting of olfactory chemicals to guide mobile robots and to help them search and explore efficiently. Such a method of laying a trail to mark the path of a robot provides differ ential navigational information relative to the starting point and starting direction. Many insects employ olfactory cues as navigation aids and to improve their efficiency when searching for food. Three scenarios are proposed in which navigational markers can be of assistance to a mobile robot. The design and characteristics of an adsorbed mass olfactory sensor are described. This sensor was designed to be mounted on a mo bile robot and is suitable for detecting and tracking olfactory chemicals. The performance of this sensor is described together with preliminary results of using it to track an odor trail.
Many wrong models approach to localize an odor source in turbulence with static sensors

Abstract:The problem of locating an odor source in turbulent flows is central to key applications such as environmental monitoring and disaster response. We address this challenge by designing an algorithm based on Bayesian inference, which uses odor measurements from an ensemble of static sensors to estimate the source position through a stochastic model of the environment. The problem is hard because of the multi-scale and out-of-equilibrium properties of turbulent transport, which lacks accurate analytical and phenomenological modeling, thus preventing a guaranteed convergence for Bayesian approaches. To overcome the risk of relying on a single unavoidably wrong model approximation, we propose a method to rank "many wrong models" and to blend their predictions. We evaluate our weighted Bayesian update algorithm by its ability to estimate the source location with predefined accuracy and/or within a specified time frame, and compare it to standard Monte Carlo sampling methods. To demonstrate the robustness and potential applications of both approaches under realistic environmental conditions, we use high-quality direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations to mimic the transport of odors in the atmospheric boundary layer. Despite minimal prior information about the source and environmental conditions, our proposed approach consistently proves to be more accurate, reliable, and robust than Monte Carlo methods, thus showing promise as a new tool for addressing the odor source localization problem in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:Odour plumes in turbulent environments are intermittent and sparse. Laboratory-scaled experiments suggest that information about the source distance may be encoded in odour signal statistics, yet it is unclear whether useful and continuous distance estimates can be made under real-world flow conditions. Here, we analyse odour signals from outdoor experiments with a sensor moving across large spatial scales in desert and forest environments to show that odour signal statistics can yield useful estimates of distance. We show that achieving accurate estimates of distance requires integrating statistics from 5 to 10 s, with a high temporal encoding of the olfactory signal of at least 20 Hz. By combining distance estimates from a linear model with wind-relative motion dynamics, we achieved source distance estimates in a 60 × 60 m2 search area with median errors of 3-8 m, a distance at which point odour sources are often within visual range for animals such as mosquitoes.

Here, we focus on the algorithmic approach to this task: we systematically review the different olfactory search strategies. Special emphasis is given to the formal description as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes, which allows the computation of optimal actions and helps clarifying the relationships between several effective heuristic search strategies.

Abstract:Locating the sources of contaminants or hazardous substances in indoor environments is extremely important for ensuring indoor air quality and indoor environmental safety. Existing source localization studies have focused on environments with strong airflow, and very few studies have addressed the more challenging source localization problems in environments with no strong airflow. In this study, we developed a mobile robot for source localization and used the robot to test and compare three single-robot source localization algorithms (E. coli, spiral and hex-path) that have the potential to be applied to environments with no strong airflow. Each algorithm was tested by 15 independent experiments. Considering both the success rates and average numbers of steps, the performance of the three algorithms from high to low was in the order of the hex-path algorithm, E. coli algorithm, and spiral algorithm, with the success rates of 73.3%, 66.7% and 60.0%, and the average numbers of steps of 51.43, 54.12, and 63.67, respectively. Based on the same comparison criteria, all three algorithms can significantly improve the success rate or reduce the average number of steps compared with a random algorithm that encounters the source solely by chance. This study can provide more choices for developing single-robot source localization methods for environments with no strong airflow and can provide inspiration and guidance for improving existing methods and developing new methods.
Fish-inspired tracking of underwater turbulent plumes

Abstract:Autonomous ocean-exploring vehicles have begun to take advantage of onboard sensor measurements of water properties such as salinity and temperature to locate oceanic features in real time. Such targeted sampling strategies enable more rapid study of ocean environments by actively steering towards areas of high scientific value. Inspired by the ability of aquatic animals to navigate via flow sensing, this work investigates hydrodynamic cues for accomplishing targeted sampling using a palm-sized robotic swimmer. As proof-of-concept analogy for tracking hydrothermal vent plumes in the ocean, the robot is tasked with locating the center of turbulent jet flows in a 13,000-liter water tank using data from onboard pressure sensors. To learn a navigation strategy, we first implemented Reinforcement Learning (RL) on a simulated version of the robot navigating in proximity to turbulent jets. After training, the RL algorithm discovered an effective strategy for locating the jets by following transverse velocity gradients sensed by pressure sensors located on opposite sides of the robot. When implemented on the physical robot, this gradient following strategy enabled the robot to successfully locate the turbulent plumes at more than twice the rate of random searching. Additionally, we found that navigation performance improved as the distance between the pressure sensors increased, which can inform the design of distributed flow sensors in ocean robots. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness and limits of flow-based navigation for autonomously locating hydrodynamic features of interest.

Abstract:Inspired by animals’ long-distance migration behaviors, we proposed a novel and reliable long-distance true navigation method based on the measurement of geomagnetic fields. By establishing a 2-D gradient approaching a coordinate plane with geomagnetic intensity and inclination, long-distance true navigation can be achieved from any starting spot in this area. Without other calibration and auxiliary information, this navigation method is highly independent, which can be used in electromagnetic shielding circumstances, such as a deep ocean. The geomagnetic intensity and inclination gradients are estimated with real-time measurement of the geomagnetic field along the navigation trajectory. With estimated local gradients, a 2-D gradient approaching algorithm can be applied to predict the heading direction, and the agent can press on toward the destination step by step. Theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations verified the feasibility and practicality of this method, proving its robustness in the presence of interference and different measurement errors. It can be a promising candidate in the design of navigation systems used in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or platforms.
