Abstract:The substantial release of NH3 during composting leads to nitrogen (N) losses and poses environmental hazards. Additives can mitigate nitrogen loss by adsorbing NH3/NH4, adjusting pH, and enhancing nitrification, thereby improving compost quality. Herein, we assessed the effects of combining bacterial inoculants (BI) (1.5%) with tricalcium phosphate (CA) (2.5%) on N retention, organic N conversion, bacterial biomass, functional genes, network patterns, and enzyme activity during kitchen waste (KW) composting. Results revealed that adding of 1.5%/2.5% (BI + CA) significantly (p < 0.05) improved ecological parameters, including pH (7.82), electrical conductivity (3.49 mS/cm), and N retention during composting. The bacterial network properties of CA (265 node) and BI + CA (341 node) exhibited a substantial niche overlap compared to CK (210 node). Additionally, treatments increased organic N and total N (TN) content while reducing NH4+-N by 65.42% (CA) and 77.56% (BI + CA) compared to the control (33%). The treatments, particularly BI + CA, significantly (p < 0.05) increased amino acid N, hydrolyzable unknown N (HUN), and amide N, while amino sugar N decreased due to bacterial consumption. Network analysis revealed that the combination expanded the core bacterial nodes and edges involved in organic N transformation. Key genes facilitating nitrogen mediation included nitrate reductase (nasC and nirA), nitrogenase (nifK and nifD), and hydroxylamine oxidase (hao). The structural equation model suggested that combined application (CA) and microbial inoculants enhance enzyme activity and bacterial interactions during composting, thereby improving nitrogen conversion and increasing the nutrient content of compost products.

Abstract:Phosphorus bioavailability is essential for assessing compost quality. However, the effects of microbial and environmental factors on potentially active phosphorus (H 2 O-P + NaHCO 3 -Pi) in factory compost have not been investigated. The findings indicated that chicken manure had significantly higher available phosphorus (AP) and H 2 O-P + NaHCO 3 -Pi throughout the composting process than kitchen waste ( P < 0.05). Chicken manure compost also exhibited higher α-microbial diversity. Novibacillus, Marinococcaceae and Bacillales were the core bacteria involved in bioavailable phosphorus conversion in both composts. The core bacteria in kitchen waste compost had a broader range of phosphorus metabolism functions. Moreover, moisture and pH were the key environmental factors that significantly influenced the bioavailable phosphorus ( P < 0.05). These findings provide a scientific foundation for regulating the composting process and improving phosphorus utilization efficiency.

Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for organisms, but excessive amounts can cause environmental pollution. Phosphorus-rich sludge can solve the problem of the loss of phosphorus resources after resource treatment. This study aimed to explore the mechanism between phosphorus functional genes and phosphorus availability by regulating the initial carbon and phosphorus ratio in sludge compost, with the goal of improving sludge phosphorus recovery efficiency. The results showed that a higher initial carbon and phosphorus ratio can promote the conversion of phosphorus from sludge to Olsen phosphorus and increase the contents of Water soluble phosphorus and Citric acid phosphorus in compost products. With the increase of the initial carbon and phosphorus ratio, phoD gene and pqqC gene abundance (P < 0.05) were significantly up-regulated, thus increasing the secretion of phosphodiesterase and organic acid, improving the phosphorus availability in compost products. The potential host of phosphorus solubilizing genes was gradually transitioned from Proteobacteria to Firmicutes. The ppk gene and phosphorus accumulating bacteria abundance were significantly higher (CP20, CP25) at the later stage of composting (P < 0.05), indicating that the phosphorus accumulating potential of the bacterial community was more prominent in the low initial carbon and phosphorus ratio compost. This study elucidated the potential mechanism of action between functional genes and phosphorus availability, and demonstrated the feasibility of improving sludge phosphorus recovery efficiency by regulating the initial carbon and phosphorus ratio.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of different carbon-based additives including biochar, woody peat, and glucose on humic acid, fulvic acid, and phosphorus fractions in chicken manure composting and its potential for phosphorus mobilization in soil. The results showed that the addition of glucose effectively increased the total humic substance content (90.2 mg/g) of composts, and the fulvic acid content was significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). The addition of biochar could effectively improve the content of available phosphorus by 59.9% in composting. The addition of carbon-based materials to the composting was beneficial for the production of more stable inorganic phosphorus in the phosphorus fraction. The highest proportion of soluble inorganic phosphorus components of sodium hydroxide was found in group with woody peat addition (8.7%) and the highest proportion of soluble inorganic phosphorus components of hydrochloric acid was found in group with glucose addition (35.2%). The compost products with the addition of biochar (humic acid decreased by 17.9%) and woody peat (fulvic acid decreased by 72.6%) significantly increased soil humic acid mineralization. The compost products with the addition of biochar was suitable as active phosphate fertilizer, while the compost products with the addition of glucose was suitable as slow-release phosphate fertilizer.

Abstract:The study was conducted to investigate the influence of biochar and/or phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) inoculants on microbial biomass, bacterial community composition and phosphorus (P) fractions during kitchen waste composting amended with rock phosphate (RP). There were distinct differences in the physic-chemical parameters, the proportion of P fractions and bacterial diversity in different treatments. The contribution of available P fractions increased during composting especially in the treatment with the addition of PSB and biochar. Redundancy analysis showed that bacterial compositions were significantly influenced by P content, inoculation and biochar. Variance partitioning further showed that synergy of inoculated PSB and indigenous bacterial communities and the joint effect between biochar and bacteria explained the largest two proportion of the variation in P fractions. Therefore, the combined application of PSB and biochar to improve the inoculation effect and an optimized regulating method were suggested based on the distribution of P fractions.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential nutrient elements for plant growth and development. Sludge compost products can be used as an important source of soil P to solve the shortage of soil P. The difference in the initial carbon-to-phosphorus ratio (C/P) will lead to difference in the bacterial community, which would affect the biological pathway of P conversion in composting. However, few studies have been reported on adjusting the initial C/P of composting to explore P conversion. Therefore, this study investigated the response of P component transformations, bacterial community and P availability to C/P during sludge composting by adjusting initial C/P. The results showed that increasing C/P promoted the mineralization of organic P and significantly increased the content of the labile P. High C/P also increased the relative content of available P, especially when the C/P was at 45 and 60, it reached 60.51% and 60.47%. High C/P caused differences in the community structure, and improved the binding ability of microbial network modules and the competitiveness of microbial communities. Additionally, high C/P strengthened the effect of microbial communities on the transformation of P components. Finally, the study showed that C/P was the main contributor to P content variation (64.7%) and indirectly affected P component conversion by affecting the microbial community. Therefore, adjusting the C/P is crucial to improve the P utilization rate of composting products.

Abstract:Bacillus presents in most composts as core microbial taxa and is widely used as inoculant in composting. However, the role of Bacillus as phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) inoculant in composting and the response of indigenous bacterial community are unclear. This study used redundancy analysis (RDA), network analysis and structural equation model (SEM) to investigate the dynamics of phosphorus (P) fractions, bacterial community, and microbial interaction in composting with PSB (Bacillus sp. P6) inoculation. Results indicated that Bacillus inoculation increased Olsen P content, organic matter degradation, and bacterial diversity, benefiting P fractions mobilization during composting. RDA showed that pH was the main factor influencing P fractions transformation and bacterial taxa. Network analysis and SEM revealed that Bacillus indirectly improved the contribution of bacterial community on P mobilization by enhancing microbial interactions. Therefore, Bacillus with P solubilizing function may be a potential inoculant to regulate the biotic process of P transformation.

Abstract:This study aims to assess the effect of different carbon-to-phosphorus (C:P) ratios on phosphorus (P) fractions transformation, bacterial community succession and microbial P-solubilizing function in kitchen waste composting with rock phosphate (RP) amendment and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) inoculation. Results indicated that initial C:P ratio at 50 enhanced organic carbon degradation, available P (AP) accumulation, the amount of PSB and pqqC gene abundance in composting but higher C:P ratio increased microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) content. Redundancy analysis showed C:P ratios, PSB amount and pqqC gene abundance greatly affected bacterial community diversity and composition. Network analysis indicated that lower C:P ratio enhanced the interaction frequency in core bacterial network for AP transformation. Variance partitioning analysis abiotic factors contributed more to MBP and AP conversion. The study revealed that C:P ratio could directly drive PSB to regulate P fractions and the accumulation of MBP or AP in P-enriched composting.

Abstract:Phosphorus recycling from organic wastes to prepare a fertilizer by composting is promising. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of diverse carbon-containing additives (T1, glucose; T2, biochar; T3, woody peat) on phosphorus (P) fractions transformations, humus formation and bacterial community succession in chicken manure composting. Results showed that orthophosphate monoester was significantly related to the humification process, and glucose or woody peat addition increased the P in humus. Lentibacillus was a key carbon cycle bacteria related to organics stabilization affected by carbon-containing additives. Redundancy analysis and variation partitioning indicated that phosphatase enzyme activity driven by bacterial community and humic substance had 59.7% contribution to P fractions dynamics. The findings highlight an efficient humus-regulation P stabilization way, notably in composting adding glucose to form humus with a better binding ability to labile P forms and phosphatase.

Abstract:Phosphorus in wastewater sludge is one of the important nutrients for biological growth and an important non-renewable resource. Most research in the composting field focuses on the C/N ratio, but there are few reports on initial carbon-phosphorus (C/P) ratio regulation. This study investigated the effects of different initial C/P ratios on phosphatase activity, key bacteria, and phosphorus availability in compost. In this study, the activity of phosphatase was measured, and key bacteria secreting phosphatase were identified. The results showed that adjusting the initial C/P ratio could prolong the cycle of action of key bacteria, thus affecting the activity of phosphatase and promoting the production of available phosphorus, but it was also inhibited by the feedback of available phosphorus. This study demonstrated the feasibility of adjusting the initial C/P ratio of sludge composting and provided theoretical support for optimizing the application of sludge composting products with different initial C/P ratios.

Abstract:Available information on the coupling relationship between phosphorus fraction and organic carbon during composting remains limited. Thus, this research investigated the changes of phosphorus fraction, dissolved organic carbon fluorescent components and microbial community in swine manure composting with different carbon sources including the maize straw (MS), garden waste (GW) and distillers' grains (DG), in order to investigate whether the distribution and availability of phosphorus are influenced by different carbon sources used in the composting of swine manure. The result showed that different carbon sources changed phosphorus availability variously mainly by altering the succession of fungal communities and phosphorus functional genes. The dissolved organic material including tyrosine and tryptophan facilitate the mineralization of organic phosphorus (Org-P) into water-soluble phosphorus, thereby improving phosphorus availability. However, humic acid-like carbon components promote the conversion of inorganic-phosphorus to Org-P, which is the direct cause of the reduced phosphorus availability during composting. The results of this study provide support for the development of phosphorus-rich, stable, and clean compost products.

Abstract:There is escalating interest in composting of post-consumption food waste (PCFW) to recycle nutrients and mitigate pollution by inappropriate disposal. The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of bioaugmentation to composting of PCFW, which is in difficulties caused by high sugar, protein and gross lipid content. Inoculation of the microbial consortium effectively induced rapid temperature and pH rising, which led to OM reduction rate at 25.11 % and maturity at 150 % in terms of Germination Index value. EEMs-FRI showed that humification was accelerated in the thermophilic stage and further improved in the mature stage. Bacterial community analysis revealed that microbial inoculant ameliorated acidification, and expedited temperature and pH rising in the initial stage, which in turn accelerated bacteria community succession. The abundance of Actinobacteria was much higher in the thermophilic and mature stage in T2 treatment than in T1, which might explain rapid organic degradation. High temperature enriched thermophilic genera ( Thermobifida , Compostibacillus , Neobacillus ), and Pseudonocardia and Actinoplanes were enriched in the mature stage, which correlated to effective degradation of organic matter, humification and maturity. Temperature and pH mainly motivated bacterial succession. The results suggest that bioaugmentation is a favorable approach for efficient composting of PCFW.

Abstract:Enriched phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) agent were acquired by domesticated cultivation, and inoculated into kitchen waste composting in different stages. The effect of different treatments on organic acids production, tricalcium phosphate (TCP) solubilization and their relationship with bacterial community were investigated during composting. Our results pointed out that inoculation affected pH, total acidity and the production of oxalic, lactic, citric, succinic, acetic and formic acids. We also found a strong advantage in the solubilization of TCP and phosphorus (P) availability for PSB inoculation especially in the cooling stage. Redundancy analysis and structural equation models demonstrated inoculation by different methods changed the correlation of the bacterial community composition with P fractions as well as organic acids, and strengthened the cooperative function related to P transformation among species during composting. Finally, we proposed a possible mechanism of P solubilization with enriched PSB inoculation, which was induced by bacterial community and organic acids production.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the effect of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) Bacillus inoculation in the cooling stage on hydroxyapatite dissolution, phosphorus (P) forms transformation, and bacterial P cycling genes in food waste composting with hydroxyapatite. Results indicated that PSB inoculation promoted the dissolution of hydroxyapatite, increased P availability of compost by 8.1% and decreased the ratio of organic P to inorganic P by 10.2% based on sequential fractionation and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Illumina sequencing indicated Bacillus relative abundance after inoculation increased up to one time higher than control after the cooling stage. Network analysis and metabolic function of bacterial community analysis suggested inorganic P solubilizing genes of Bacillus and organic P mineralization genes of other genera were improved after inoculation in the core module. Therefore, bioaugmentation of PSB in the cooling stage may be a potential way to improve P bioavailability of bone and food waste in composting.

Role of fungal communities and their interaction with bacterial communities on carbon and nitrogen component transformation in composting with different phosphate additives

Abstract:The aim of the study was to compare the succession of fungal community and their interaction with bacterial community during pig manure composting with different phosphate additives and further to identify microbial roles on the transformation of carbon and nitrogen (C&N) components and compost maturity. The results showed that the composition of fungal community was significantly affected by pH in composting and acidic phosphate might postpone the C&N degradation process. Network analysis showed that phosphate additives, especially acidic additives, could increase the interaction of microbial community but acidic phosphate decreased the core fungi:bacteria ratio. Redundancy analysis indicated that the interactions between bacterial and fungal communities played more roles than individual contribution of bacteria or fungi for C&N conversion of composting. Structural equation modeling suggested that bacterial community was positively directly correlated to C&N loss and the participation of fungal community significantly benefited the maturity of composting. pH exhibited a great intermediated role for driving C&N conversion, maturity, and safety of composts by regulating bacterial and fungal community in composting with phosphate addition, which suggested a fast-composting way based on pH regulation by additives.
The microbial mechanisms of enhanced humification by inoculation with Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trichoderma longibrachiatum during biogas residues composting

Abstract:This study investigated effects of composite microbes (CMs) (Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trichoderma longibrachiatum) on humification during co-composting of biogas residue, spent mushroom substrate and rice straw. Results showed that CMs inoculation elevated degradation ratios of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 7.86%, 8.87% and 6.45%, and contents of humus and humic acid were correspondingly promoted by 15.5% and 23.6%, respectively. Relative abundances of bacteria associated with refractory macromolecules degradation (Flavobacterium, Anseongella and Actinomadura) and cellulolytic fungi (Hypocreales_Incertae_sedis, Hypocreaceae and Psathyrellaceae) were raised by CMs addition. Redundancy analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between microbial communities and temperature, fulvic acid and lignocellulose contents. Moreover, CMs inoculation promoted pathways of xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, and biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, which was closely associated with lignocellulose degradation and humus formation. These results suggested that biological inoculation could enhance composting efficiency and improve compost quality, benefiting biogas residues composting.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) transform organic matter into electricity through microbial electrochemical reactions catalysed on anodic and cathodic half-cells. Terrestrial MFCs (TMFCs) are a bioelectrochemical system for bioelectricity production as well as soil remediation. In TMFCs, the soil is the ion-exchange electrolyte, whereas a biofilm on the anode oxidises organic matter through electroactive bacteria. Little is known of the overall microbial community composition in a TMFC, which impedes complete exploitation of the potential to generate energy in different soil types. In this context, an experiment was performed to reveal the prokaryotic community structure in single chamber TMFCs with soil in the presence and absence of a municipal waste compost (3% w/v). The microbial community was assessed on the anode and cathode and in bulk soil at the end of the experiment (54 days). Moreover, TMFC electrical performance (voltage and power) was also evaluated over the experimental period, varying the external resistance to improve performance. Compost stimulated soil microbial activity, in line with a general increase in voltage and power. Significant differences were observed in the microbial communities between initial soil conditions and TMFCs, and between the anode, cathode and bulk soil in the presence of the compost. Several electroactive genera (Bacillus, Fulvivirga, Burkholdeira and Geobacter) were found at the anode in the presence of compost. Overall, the use of municipal waste compost significantly increased the performance of the MFCs in terms of electrical power and voltage generated, not least thanks to the selective pressure towards electroactive bacteria on the anode.
Impact of Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria Inoculation Methods on Phosphorus Transformation and Long-Term Utilization in Composting

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the effect of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) application and inoculation methods on rock phosphate (RP) solubilization and bacterial community during composting. The results showed that PSB inoculation in different stages of composting, especially both in the beginning and cooling stages, not only improved the diversity and abundance of PSB and bacterial community, but also distinctly increased the content of potential available phosphorus. Redundancy analysis indicated that the combined inoculation of PSB in the initial stage with higher inoculation amount and in the cooling stage with lower inoculation amount was the best way to improve the inoculation effect and increase the solubilization and utilization of RP during composting. Besides, we suggested three methods to improve phosphorus transformation and long-term utilization efficiency in composts based on biological fixation of phosphates by humic substance and phosphate-accumulating organisms.

Abstract:To address the low conversion of effective phosphorus during previous studies on spent mushroom substrate (SMS) composting, phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) were utilized to increase the effective phosphorus content in this study. The results demonstrated that PSB treatments exhibited higher temperature levels up to 66 °C. The TN, NH4+-N, and NO3−-N contents were higher than those of the control treatment (CK) by 9.01%, 50.01%, and 4.61%, respectively. Inoculation with PSB increased effective phosphorus, total phosphorus, and humus content in the SMS compost by 6.84%, 11.05%, and 9.10%. In addition, based on PICRUSt analysis, inoculation with PSB significantly promoted metabolic pathways associated with phosphorus conversion or the production of substances that can facilitate phosphorus conversion or phosphorus leaching, thus improving phosphorus utilization in compost. In conclusion, the addition of PSB can improve the bioavailability of P and the humus content in SMS compost to realize the green and sustainable development of the edible mushroom industry.
Physicochemical and Biological Changes of Compost Inoculated with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa AAC1 and Rock Phosphate: Implications for P Availability

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but its availability in soil is often limited. Present study was conducted to design compost enriched with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and rock phosphate (RP). Four compost piles were prepared with RP and 30:1 carbon-to-nitrogen (C: N). Out of these, two piles were inoculated with PSB strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa AAC1 (RP + AAC1) while two piles were left un-inoculated and served as control (RP). The physicochemical assessment of the designed compost revealed that the addition of RP and inoculation of P. aeruginosa AAC1 (RP + AAC1) significantly ( p < 0.05) increased the composting temperature (over 58 °C), calcium (36.84%), magnesium (35%) and available P contents (43.50%) indicating the solubilization of inorganic P, Ca and Mg bound phosphates However, the addition did not significantly ( p > 0.05) influence the carbon (C), carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, organic matter, and ash content but significantly ( p < 0.05) reduced the moisture content (41%) and pH (up to 5.4). After 60 days, all compost piles reached maturity at temperature ranges of 27-30 °C, pH level between 7.2–7.6, and moisture content 31-35%. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) confirmed the presence of elements including carbon (C), oxygen (O), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), calcium (Ca), and P (P) in the compost. Microbiological monitoring revealed the survival of P. aeruginosa AAC1 during the composting process even at higher temperatures (∼58 °C). Indigenous bacterial populations were recovered within the range of 10 9 - 10 14 CFUg −1 . Compost was also safe in regard to heavy metal concentrations. Thus, the results suggest that combining P. aeruginosa AAC1 and RP in compost can enhance the availability of soluble P, thus serving as an effective phosphatic biofertilizer.
