Abstract:One-step and in-situ FeCl3-participated 3-participated molten urea thermal polymerization strategy is designed to prepare Fe-O co-doped carbon nitride photo-Fenton catalyst (Fe/OCN). Fe/OCN exhibits remarkable photo-Fenton catalytic oxidation capacity towards recalcitrant organic pollutants, in which 0.31 wt% Fe/OCN with optimal Fe-doping level exhibits significantly 60 and 6.3 times higher pseudo-first-order kinetic constant than single photocatalysis and Fenton system in the degradation of methyl orange. The enhancement of photo-Fenton catalytic performance is mainly ascribed to the realization of ideal Fe-O and Fe-N coordination structure in the framework of polymeric carbon nitride, which can not only serve as prime sites for the adsorption of target pollutants molecules and transfer channels for directed migration of photogenerated charges, but also well-modulate electronic structure and band structure of Fe/OCN. Accordingly, the resulting boosted charge carriers separation and transfer dynamics and increased electron density around Fe active centers facilitate -Fe(II) regeneration and H2O2 2 O 2 activation, leading to the significant production of plentiful reactive species responsible for degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. The present work provides new insight into the optimized design and precise regulation of carbon nitride-based photo-Fenton system for advanced wastewater treatment.
Construction of an interpenetrating manganese residue-derived FeC2O4/CuC2O4 composite with enhanced charge transfer in photo-Fenton reactions via mechanical activation pre-anchoring strategy

Abstract:The low rates of charge separation and migration and the pronounced photo-corrosion of FeC2O4 significantly limit its environmental applications. Strengthening the charge transfer rate by constructing a tight bimetallic interface is an attractive method. Herein, a novel interpenetrating manganese residue (MR)-derived FeC2O4/CuC2O4 (MAMR-FeCuOx) composite with intimate interface was constructed via mechanical activation (MA) pre-anchoring and liquid-phase deposition-photo-reduction strategy, and was used as a photo-Fenton catalyst for efficient degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible light irradiation. The Cu2+ was uniformly dispersed and anchored on the surface of MR after MA pretreatment and an interpenetrating structure was formed through the liquid-phase deposition-photo-reduction process. MAMR-FeCuOx displayed excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance and stability with a 99% OTC removal rate within 10 min, which is 20.87 times higher than that of FeC2O4, and maintained over 96% OTC removal rate even after ten consecutive cycles. These enhanced catalytic performances and stability can be attributed to the formation of an interpenetrating structure with the intimate interface between FeC2O4 and CuC2O4 induced by MA pretreatment, which promoted electronic interactions between Fe and Cu for effectively reducing the charge transfer barriers. This improved the utilization rate of visible light, the interface electron migration, and the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. This study provides new insights into the valorization of solid waste and the development of stable and efficient FeC2O4-based catalysts.

0D/2D dual Fenton α-Fe2O3/Fe-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst and the synergistic photo-Fenton catalytic mechanism insight

Abstract:A novel dual Photo-Fenton photocatalyst Fe2O3-Fe-CN with excellent Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion efficiency and trace metal ion leaching rate has been fabricated by in-situ deposition of α-Fe2O3 quantum dots on ultrathin porous Fe-doped carbon nitride (Fe-CN) nanosheets. The iron species in Fe-CN and α-Fe2O3 QDs constitute a mutually reinforcing dual Photo-Fenton effect. The 4% Fe2O3-Fe-CN showed superior performance with kobs values 8.60 and 4.80 folders greater than pure CN and Fe-CN, respectively. The synergistic effect between α-Fe2O3 QDs and the ultrathin porous structure of Fe-CN is the primary reason for the outstanding catalytic performance exhibited by α-Fe2O3/Fe-CN. On one hand, the ultrathin porous structure of Fe-CN promotes the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons. On the other hand, the efficient photogenerated charge separation at the α-Fe2O3/Fe-CN interface enables more photogenerated electrons to participate in the Fe3+/Fe2+ conversion and H2O2 activation. The trapping experiments demonstrate that •OH and •O2- are the primary active species in TC degradation. This work presents novel insights into the design of efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Photo-Fenton-like catalysis allows development of novel advanced oxidation technology with promising application in wastewater treatment. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were intercalated between CuO nanoparticles and coralloid flower-like graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) to fabricate a ternary CuO/CDs/g-C 3 N 4 hybrid for synergetic visible-light-driven photo-Fenton-like oxidation. The CuO/CDs/g-C 3 N 4 hybrid showed remarkable degradation efficiency towards recalcitrant organic contamination, excellent tolerance to realistic environmental conditions, exceptional stability and wide universality, declaring great potential for practical applications. •OH and •O 2 − radicals were demonstrated to be the primary contributors in the photo-Fenton-like system. Mechanism studies reveal dual charge transfer pathways in the Z-scheme CuO/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction assisted by interfacial electron transmission bridges of CDs, which can simultaneously boost the reduction of Cu 2+ to Cu + in the Fenton-like cycle and accelerate the Z-scheme electron flow from CuO to g-C 3 N 4 , leading to synergistic enhancement of the catalytic performance. This work would afford a feasible strategy to develop reinforced solar energy-assisted photo-Fenton-like catalysis systems for water remediation.

Abstract:To promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, break through the bottleneck of classical Fenton reaction, and achieve the efficient degradation of organic pollutants, a two-electron centre Cu/CuFe2O4 with oxygen vacancies (Cu/CuFe2O4-OVs)1 was synthesised by citric acid complexation and ascorbic acid (Vc)2 in-situ reduction. Under visible light irradiation, H2O2 was added to form a two-electron centre synergistic photocatalysis-Fenton degradation system that could degrade 100 ppm of phenol by 92.72% in 18 min. The degradation efficiency constant was 8165 and 4.35 times that of photocatalysis and Fenton oxidation, respectively. Such excellent degradation activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of the two-electron centre and photocatalysis-Fenton. Cu0 has two functions: (1) it acts as an electronic bridge of Fe and Cu in Fenton and accelerates the separation of photogenerated carriers; (2) it acts as the transfer channel of the two-electron centre. Oxygen vacancies are electron-rich centres that activate H2O2, while the electron-poor centre Cu(II) captures photogenerated electrons and phenol electrons. Quenching experiments and EPR results indicated that OH, O2− and h+ are the main active species. The synergistic degradation mechanism was proposed based on experiments and theoretical calculations. Through further optimization of the conditions and cyclic regeneration stability test, the system was extended to degrade different dyes, phenolic organic pollutants and coking wastewater.

Broad Spectral Response FeOOH/BiO2−x Photocatalyst with Efficient Charge Transfer for Enhanced Photo-Fenton Synergistic Catalytic Activity

Abstract:In this work, to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, prevent the catalyst from photo-corrosion, and improve the photo-Fenton synergistic degradation of organic pollutants, the coating structure of FeOOH/BiO2−x rich in oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized by a facile and environmentally friendly two-step process of hydrothermal and chemical deposition. Through a series of degradation activity tests of synthesized materials under different conditions, it was found that FeOOH/BiO2−x demonstrated outstanding organic pollutant degradation activity under visible and near-infrared light when hydrogen peroxide was added. After 90 min of reaction under photo-Fenton conditions, the degradation rate of Methylene Blue by FeOOH/BiO2−x was 87.4%, significantly higher than the degradation efficiency under photocatalysis (60.3%) and Fenton (49.0%) conditions. The apparent rate constants of FeOOH/BiO2−x under photo-Fenton conditions were 2.33 times and 3.32 times higher than photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis, respectively. The amorphous FeOOH was tightly coated on the layered BiO2−x, which significantly increased the specific surface area and the number of active sites of the composites, and facilitated the improvement of the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers and the prevention of photo-corrosion of BiO2−x. The analysis of the mechanism of photo-Fenton synergistic degradation clarified that ·OH, h+, and ·O2− are the main active substances involved in the degradation of pollutants. The optimal degradation conditions were the addition of the FeOOH/BiO2−x composite catalyst loaded with 20% Fe at a concentration of 0.5 g/L, the addition of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 8 mM, and an initial pH of 4. This outstanding catalytic system offers a fresh approach to the creation and processing of iron-based photo-Fenton catalysts by quickly and efficiently degrading various organic contaminants.

Ingenious Control of Adsorbed Oxygen Species to Construct Dual Reaction Centers ZnO@FePc Photo-Fenton Catalyst with High-Speed Electron Transmission Channel for PPCPs Degradation

Abstract:To achieve efficient degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), dual reaction centers ZnO@FePc photo-Fenton catalysts with high-speed electron transmission channel were designed through surface hydroxyl-induced assembly. In ZnO@FePc catalytic system, the photocatalysis center of ZnO and Fenton cata-lytic center of FePc were formed simultaneously. Concept and process for the control of hydroxyl groups to construct a dual reaction center ZnO@FePc photo-Fenton catalyst were verified ingeniously based on the density functional theory (DFT) analysis and experimental results. A series of catalysts, including ZIF-8 (400 degrees C-N-2), FePc (400 degrees C-N-2), ZIF-8 (400 degrees C)-FePc (400 degrees C) and ZnO@FePc were prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, TEM, BET, XPS, PL and DRS, respectively. The ZnO@FePc catalyst showed superior performance for the photo-Fenton degradation of ibuprofen, affording degradation rate larger than 90 % within just 10 min under simulateed sunlight. The excellent performance of ZnO@FePc catalyst is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between dual reaction centers of ZnO@FePc. This work provides a novel method to construct dual reaction centers ZnO@FePc catalyst with efficient photo-generated electrons transmission link and to strengthen the synergistic effect of dual reaction centers.
Efficient Fenton-like Process Induced by Fortified Electron-Rich O Microcenter on the Reduction State Cu-Doped CNO Polymer.

Abstract:The discharge of organic pollutants threatens the environment and health and is also a waste of organic energy. Here, the reduction state Cu (RSC) species-doped carbon-nitrogen-oxygen polymer (RSC-CNOP) is synthesized from high-temperature polymerization of a Cu-polyimide precursor, which is used as a Fenton-like catalyst and exhibits excellent performance for pollutant degradation, accompanied by the utilization of the electron energy of the pollutants. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the promotion mechanism. The formed Cu(RSC)-O-C(π) electron-transfer bridges in RSC-CNOP induce the bidirectional electron transfers from RSC to O and from C(π) to O (RSC → O ← π), forming the polarized reaction micro-areas (reinforced electron-rich O microcenters and electron-poor C(π) microcenters). The free electrons in electron-rich centers of RSC-CNOP are as many as ∼8 times that of the pure CNOP sample from the electron paramagnetic resonance measurement. Pollutants are oxidized by supplying electrons to electron-poor microcenters, and H2O2 can be selectively reduced to •OH (also destruct pollutants) in the electron-rich microcenter over RSC-CNOP. This work reveals that the energy and electrons of pollutants can be efficiently utilized in the Fenton-like system through constructing and reinforcing the polarized dual reaction microcenters.

A novel α-Fe2O3@g-C3N4 catalyst: Synthesis derived from Fe-based MOF and its superior photo-Fenton performance

Abstract:Fabricating heterojunction catalysts is a promising strategy for improving the performance in heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction (PFR). Herein, a Z-scheme heterostructured α-Fe2O3@g-C3N4 catalyst was successfully synthesized through the co-calcination of melamine and Fe-based MOF. The characterization results demonstrated that α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles anchored on the surface of g-C3N4 successfully. The degradation of tetracycline (TC) in visible-light/H2O2 system was adopted to evaluate the photo-Fenton activity of the catalysts. About 92% of TC was degraded by the optimum composite FOCN-0.45 in 60 min; the degradation rate (0.042 min−1) of TC by the FOCN-0.45 is 6, 7 and 14 times higher than that by pristine MIL-53 (Fe) (0.007 min−1), α-Fe2O3 (0.006 min−1) and g-C3N4 (0.003 min−1), respectively. The prepared FOCN-0.45 composite exhibited excellent performance and high stability in a wide range of pH value. The promoted photo-Fenton catalytic efficiency benefited from the Z-scheme heterojunctions of α-Fe2O3@g-C3N4, which enhanced the separation ability of photo-generated charge carriers and increased the electrons that participated in Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle. The boosting OH radicals degraded organic pollutants as main reactive radicals. This work presents a feasible path to design and synthesize heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The syndromes of partial and of total lipodystrophy have been reviewed and 27 further patients added, 25 with partial lipodystrophy and 2 with total lipodystrophy. For inclusion in the syndrome of partial lipodystrophy symmetrical loss of fat from the face with or without truncal loss, but with retention of distal adipose depots was required. In total lipodystrophy fat loss was generalized. A number of additional features were commonly present in total lipodystrophy. These included increased height, advanced bone age, hirsuties, pigmentation, prominence of muscles, abdominal protuberance, penile or clitoridial enlargement, hepatomegaly, relatively insulin resistant hyperglycemia, hyperlipemia and hypermetabolism, as well as renal disease, disturbances of C.N.S. function and cardiomegaly. Review of reports of patients with muscular hypertrophy suggested that several so described might have had total lipodystrophy. A significant incidence of renal disease was encountered in the reports of partial lipodystrophy in the literature and more particularly in the group presented. Although much less frequently present, central nervous system dysfunction, hepatomegaly and a decreased glucose tolerance were also noted. It appears that there are features common to both syndromes other than disappearance of fat. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms have been considered.
HOFs structured CN template enables the dual regulation of Cu–O and Cu–N active sites in porous Cu-g-CN for synergistic photo-Fenton process

Abstract:Photo-Fenton catalysis with strong oxidation potential and cyclic stability represents a promising technique for addressing the escalating environmental challenges. However, the photo-Fenton activity using Fe/Cu doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) catalysts is significantly hindered by the limited reaction interface and non-tunable surface-active sites. Herein, we present a novel CN polymer type hydrogen bonded organic framework (CN-HOFs) template derived Cu-g-CN (Cu/CH-g-CN) based hybriding catalyst (CN-HOFs/Cu/CH-g-CN), which process greatly optimized surface features for high-performance photo-Fenton reaction with exceptional durability in a broad pH range of 3–11. Importantly, the distinctive porous structure of CN-HOFs template offers not only high specific surface area, but also the possibility to regulate Cu active sites. The coexistence of Cu–O and Cu–N active sites is identified by XPS, which facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated charges, expediting the redox cycle. The synergistic photo-Fenton reaction boosted by the porous CN-HOFs structure and the dual Cu active sites (Cu–O and Cu–N) was verified by degradation activity of tetracycline. Under visible light irradiation at a concentration of 20 mg/L, the degradation efficiency reaches nearly 100% within 20 min, with exceptional cycling stability. Further investigations have revealed that the Cu–O active site is conducive to the adsorption of organic pollutants, while the Cu–N active site promotes electron transfer, accelerates the cyclic conversion of Cu + and Cu 2+ . The dual copper active site is beneficial for the generation of hydroxyl radicals and the stable operation of the catalyst, resulting in significant photo-Fenton activity. This work underscores the importance of regulating the nanoscale morphology and electronic structure of photofunctional catalysts, not only to increase the active sites for photo-Fenton reactions but also to facilitate charge transfer and the cycling of active metal ions, thereby improving the sustainability of heterogeneous photo-Fenton process.

Abstract:The maximum exposure of active sites is the key to obtaining high reaction activity for supported metal catalysts. Single-atom metal sites and ultra-small metal clusters have received great attention because of their superior catalytic activities compared to their aggregated counterparts. However, developing high-density metal clusters with high activity and adequate stability remains a major challenge in practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate that highly dispersed and active Fe sites for heterogeneous Photo-Fenton systems can be chelated into graft chains on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers via radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) and subsequent modification, labeled as U-g-PAO/Fe. The amidoxime chelated Fe(III) catalyst, in which the loading amount of chelated Fe(III) is 24.04 wt%, exhibits remarkably efficient removal of ofloxacin within 35 min by activating H2O2 under visible light irradiation. The catalytic activities and stability of U-g-PAO/Fe were evaluated by the removal of various model organic pollutants and multiple recycles of degradation, demonstrating superior catalytic activities over a wide pH range (2-10) for the activation of H2O2 than a typical Fenton catalyst. Furthermore, the graft macromolecular chains of chelated Fe(III) provide a welldefined reaction microenvironment with maximum atom efficiency. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and density functional theory calculations (DFT) revealed that the unique active sites [Amidoxime-Fe(OH)(H2O)3]2+ of U-g-PAO/Fe considerably activated H2O2 decomposition under artificial sunlight irradiation. Our study presents a novel idea for the design and synthesis of highly dispersed and reactive Fe-based Photo-Fenton catalysts for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The photo-Fenton process, with a synergistic effect of Fenton oxidation and photocatalysis, is a promising technique for the removal of refractory organic pollutants. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers results in less electrons for Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and later generation of hydroxyl radicals. In this work, Fe-doped graphite carbon nitride with a thin nanosheet structure (∼5 nm thickness) was prepared using the supramolecular preorganization method (Fe/CNSP), which effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated charges compared with that of Fe-doped bulk carbon nitride (Fe/BCN), resulting in an obviously improved photo-Fenton performance by increasing the electron gain at the Fe sites and the speed of the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The heterogeneous photo-Fenton activity of Fe/CNSP displays a 6.5 times higher kinetic constant for carbamazepine degradation than that of Fe/BCN, and universal effectiveness toward other organic pollutants, namely phenol, sulfamethoxazole, bisphenol A, and 2,4-dichlorophenol, with TOC removals between 37.4% and 91.3% in 150 min. OH, O2 −, e−, h+, and 1O2 contribute to the degradation of organic pollutants. Fe/CNSP was proven to be stable and reusable in cyclic experiments. The analysis of the intermediate toxicity demonstrated that the Fe/CNSP photo-Fenton system effectively reduced the toxicity of carbamazepine. This study offers a simple, highly reproducible method for developing efficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a competent candidate for heterogeneous Fenton catalysis application. However, g-C3N4 based heterogeneous Fenton catalysts suffer from either high consumption of H2O2 or inefficient catalytic efficiency. In this work, g-C3N4 modified with trace-level copper and carbon dots (CDs) was designed. Contrary to previous understanding, the results revealed that the introduction of Cu decreased the photodegradation activity of g-C3N4 owing to the trapping of photogenerated charge carriers by introduced Cu species. But delightedly, the g-C3N4 modified with trace-level Cu (Cu-g-C3N4) not only exhibited exceptional Fenton-like catalytic activity with low consumption of H2O2 (4 mM), but also showed favorable photo-Fenton synergistic catalytic activity. The excellent performance was fundamentally due to the introduced trace-level Cu that avoided producing excessive defects acting as trapping centers of active radicals and simultaneously reduced the consumption of photogenerated charge carriers by Cu species themselves, giving rise to more active radicals and highly efficient utilization of H2O2. Moreover, after introducing CDs, the obtained CDs/Cu-g-C3N4 showed higher photo-Fenton activity in degrading different organic pollutants compared to Cu-g-C3N4 owing to the role of CDs in facilitating the charge transfer and strengthening the interaction with organic pollutants. The constructed Cu-g-C3N4 and CDs/Cu-g-C3N4 showed wide application pH and high stability, holding great potential in practical pollutants degradation applications.

Abstract:The Fenton reaction has been widely used in the environmental remediation. However, the sharp decline of photo-Fenton catalysts activity under neutral conditions is still an urgent problem to be solved. This study reports a Co/Fe bimetallic oxide quantum dots-coupled g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CoFeO QDs/g-C 3 N 4 NSs) composites with efficient degradation of organic pollutants under neutral conditions. Under the photo-Fenton condition, rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency reached 98.32% within 90 min for CoFeO QDs/g-C 3 N 4 NSs composites. The formed heterojunction between CoFeO QDs and g-C 3 N 4 NSs achieves enhanced charge transfer and efficient charge separation. Co–Fe bimetals make g-C 3 N 4 NSs easier to excite the production of ·OH by H 2 O 2 , achieving excellent degradation efficiency and cycle stability for organic pollutants in a wide pH range. Abstract:Exploitation of catalysts with multi-active sites is very important for enhancing catalytic performance. 0D/2D hybrids, especially quantum dots (QDs)/nanosheets (NSs), have attracted increasing attentions for advanced oxidation processes due to high charge mobility and more active sites. However, 0D/2D hybrids with multi-active sites still remain a great challenge. Herein, 0D Cu-Fe bi-metal oxide QDs/2D g-C3N4 (CNNSs) exhibiting superior advantages beyond single-metal 0D/2D counterparts was fabricated via a facile one-step synthesis strategy for photo-Fenton catalysis. The synergy of ultrafine Cu-Fe sites on CNNSs led to outstanding tetracycline removal efficiency over a wide pH range. Our experiments and DFT calculations clearly demonstrated that except for the fast charge separation and transfer, this synergy could achieve the optimal H2O2 adsorption-activation trade-off on Cu-Fe sites, while also modify tetracycline absorption, leading to multiple synergies of adsorption-catalytic degradation and photocatalysis-Fenton oxidation. This work provides new insights in developing multi-functional 0D/2D hybrids for environment and energy applications.

Abstract:In the conventional Fenton system, the relatively low efficiency of Fe (II) regeneration is a significant drawback. To address this shortcoming, a novel floating Z-scheme photo-Fenton catalyst FeMo3Ox/g-C3N4/EP was prepared by a facile dip-calcination method, in which iron and molybdenum oxides with mixed valence states (FeMo3Ox) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were loaded on the expanded perlite. The removal efficiencies reached the maximum at 98.0%, 93.1% and 97.1% for tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, respectively, after 60 min dark adsorption and 60 min photo-Fenton process. The aid of dual ion (Fe and Mo) synergy system and photoreduction by Z-scheme photocatalyst enhanced the Fe (II) regeneration, resulting in the excellent performance. Radical scavenger experiment, electron spin resonance spectra (ESR) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to confirm the mechanism of free radicals' formation and Fe/Mo redox cycling. ·OH, ·O2- and 1O2 played important roles in the pollutant's degradation, while the generation of ·O2- was enhanced due to the floatability in this system. The possible degradation pathways of TC were put forward according to the results of mass spectrum and Orbital-Weighted Fukui Function. Overall, this work provides new insights on the cooperation between iron-based mix oxides and semiconductor in the photo-Fenton system.
