Abstract:A groundwater plume containing high concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds, mainly sulfonamides, barbiturates and ethyl urethane, in addition to chlorinated ethenes and benzene was investigated. The contamination originating from a former pharmaceutical industry discharges into a multilayered aquifer system and a downgradient stream. In this study, geological and hydrogeological data were integrated into a numerical flow model to examine identified trends using statistical approaches, including principle component analysis and hierarchal cluster analysis. A joint interpretation of the groundwater flow paths and contaminant concentrations in the different compartments (i.e. groundwater and hyporheic zone) provided insight on the transport processes of the different contaminant plumes to the stream. The analysis of historical groundwater concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds at the site suggested these compounds are slowly degrading The pharmaceutical compounds migrate in both a deep semi‐confined aquifer, as well as in the shallow unconfined aquifer, and enter the stream along a 2 km stretch. This contrasted with the chlorinated ethenes, which mainly discharge to the stream as a focused plume from the unconfined aquifer. The integrated approach developed here, combining groundwater flow modelling and statistical analyses of the contaminant concentration data collected in groundwater and the hyporheic zone, lead to an improved understanding of the observed distribution of contaminants in the unconfined and semi‐confined aquifers, and thus to their discharge to the stream. This approach is particularly relevant for large and long‐lasting contaminant sources and plumes, such as abandoned landfills and industrial production sites, where field investigations may be very expensive.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This study comprises the first application of the Passive Flux Meter (PFM) for the measurement of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon (CAH) mass fluxes and Darcy water fluxes in groundwater at a European field site. The PFM was originally developed and applied to measurements near source zones. The focus of the PFM is extended from near source to plume zones. For this purpose, 48 PFMs of 1.4 m length were constructed and installed in eight different monitoring wells in the source and plume zone of a CAH-contaminated field site located in France. The PFMs were retrieved, sampled, and analyzed after 3 to 11 weeks of exposure time, depending on the expected contaminant flux. PFM evaluation criteria include analytical, technical, and practical aspects as well as conditions and applicability. PFM flux data were compared with so-called traditional soil and groundwater concentration data obtained using active sampling methods. The PFMs deliver reasonable results for source as well as plume zones. The limiting factor in the PFM applicability is the exposure time together with the groundwater flux. Measured groundwater velocities at the field site range from 2 to 41 cm/day. Measured contaminant flux data raise up to 13 g/m2/day for perchloroethylene in the plume zone. Calculated PFM flux averaged concentration data and traditional concentration data were of similar magnitude for most wells. However, both datasets need to be compared with reservation because of the different sampling nature and time. Two important issues are the PFM tracer loss during installation/extraction and the deviation of the groundwater flow field when passing the monitoring well and PFM. The demonstration of the PFM at a CAH-contaminated field site in Europe confirmed the efficiency of the flux measurement technique for source as well as plume zones. The PFM can be applied without concerns in monitoring wells with European standards. The acquired flux data are of great value for the purpose of site characterization and mass discharge modeling, and can be used in combination with traditional soil and groundwater sampling methods.

Abstract:A screening method in the combination of ultrasonic extraction,gas chromatogra-phy-mass spectrometry detection and automated mass spectrometry deconvolution technique was developed for non-target screening of non-polar and weak polar pollutants in sediments and sludges. The samples were extracted by ultrasonication for 20 min using dichloromethane for three times. The extraction solutions were cleaned-up by gel permeation chromatography and a silica gel column,and then 3 g of copper powder was used to remove the sulfur by ultrasonica-tion for 10 min. Parallel experiments were carried out for 5 times and the RSDs were ranged from 5. 8% to 14. 9%. Automated mass spectral deconvolution &identification system( AMDIS) would improve the resolution of overlapping peaks,and identify the pure mass spectrum of the analytes in the cases of stronger background interference and co-extracted substances covering. Standard spectrum databases,such as NISTDRUG,NISTEPA,NISTFDA,Mass Spectral Library, etc,would qualitatively identify the organic pollutants in the samples. As a result,a total of 290 organic pollutants were identified,of which 190 and 153 pollutants were found in sediments and sludges,respectively. The identified pollutants included the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)priority pollutants,pharmaceuticals,herbicides,antioxidants,intermediates,organic solvents and chemical raw materials. The proposed method is proved to be a promising one for non-target screening of complex matrix samples with the advantages of higher sensitivity and better repeatability.
New methodology to investigate potential contaminant mass fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface by combining integral pumping tests and streambed temperatures

Abstract:The spatial pattern and magnitude of mass fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface have important implications for the fate and transport of contaminants in river basins. Integral pumping tests were performed to quantify average concentrations of chlorinated benzenes in an unconfined aquifer partially penetrated by a stream. Four pumping wells were operated simultaneously for a time period of 5 days and sampled for contaminant concentrations. Streambed temperatures were mapped at multiple depths along a 60m long stream reach to identify the spatial patterns of groundwater discharge and to quantify water fluxes at the stream-aquifer interface. The combined interpretation of the results showed average potential contaminant mass fluxes from the aquifer to the stream of 272microgm(-2)d(-1) MCB and 71microgm(-2)d(-1) DCB, respectively. This methodology combines a large-scale assessment of aquifer contamination with a high-resolution survey of groundwater discharge zones to estimate contaminant mass fluxes between aquifer and stream.

Abstract:Groundwater contamination is a threat to drinking water resources and ecosystems. Remediation by injection of chemical reagents into the aquifer may be preferred to excavation to reduce cost and environmental footprint. Yet, successful remediation requires complete contact between contamination and reagents. Subsurface heterogeneities are often responsible for diffusion into low-permeable zones, which may inhibit this contact. Monitoring the spatial distribution of injected reagents over time is crucial to achieve complete interaction. Source zone contamination at megasites is particularly challenging to remediate and monitor due to the massive scale and mixture of contaminants. Source zone remediation at Kærgård Plantation megasite (Denmark) is monitored here, with a new methodology, using high-resolution cross-borehole electrical resistivity tomography (XB-ERT) imaging calibrated by chemical analyses on groundwater samples. At this site, high levels of toxic non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) are targeted by in-situ chemical oxidation using activated persulfate. It may take numerous injection points with extensive injection campaigns to distribute reagents, which requires an understanding of how reagent may transport within the aquifer. A geophysical (XB-ERT) monitoring network of unprecedented size was installed to identify untreated zones and help manage the remediation strategy. The combination of spatially continuous geophysical information with discrete but precise chemical information, allowed detailed monitoring of sulfate distribution, produced during persulfate activation. Untreated zones identified in the first remediation campaign were resolved in the second campaign. The monitoring allowed adjusting the number of injection screens and the injection strategy from one campaign to the next, which resulted in better persulfate distribution and contaminant degradation in the second campaign. Furthermore, geophysical transects repeated over the timespan of a remediation campaign allowed high-resolution time-lapse imaging of reagent transport, which could in the future improve the predictability of transport models, compared to only using on a-priori assumptions of the hydraulic conductivity field.

Abstract:The transfer of contaminant mass between the nonaqueous- and aqueous-phases is a process of central importance for the remediation of sites contaminated by dense nonaqueous-phase liquids (DNAPLs). This paper describes a comparison of the results obtained with various alternative DNAPL-aqueous-phase mass transfer models contained in the literature for predicting DNAPL source-zone depletion times in groundwater systems. These dissolution models were largely developed through laboratory column experiments. To gain insight into the implications of various representations of the local-scale kinetic as well as equilibrium DNAPL dissolution processes, aquifer heterogeneity and the complex architecture of a DNAPL source-zone, the aqueous-phase contaminant concentrations and mass fluxes arriving at a down-gradient compliance boundary are analyzed in a conditional stochastic framework. The hydrogeologic setting is a heterogeneous fluvial aquifer in Southwest Germany, referred to as the aquifer analog dataset, that was intensively characterized in three dimensions for hydrogeological parameters that include permeability, effective porosity, grain size, mineralogy and sorption coefficients. By embedding the various dissolution models into the compositional, multiphase flow model, CompFlow, the relative times predicted for complete depletion of a released DNAPL source due to natural dissolution are explored. Issues related to achieving environmental benefits through, for example, partial DNAPL-zone source removal via enhanced remedial technologies are also discussed. In this context, performance metrics in the form of peak aqueous-phase contaminant concentrations and mass fluxes arriving at a down-gradient compliance boundary are compared to each other. This is done for each of the alternative mass transfer models. A significant reduction in the fractional flux at a downstream location from the DNAPL source can be achieved by partial source-zone mass reduction; however, peak concentration levels at the same location remain much higher than the United States Environment Protection Agency (US-EPA) drinking water limits. Although groundwater quality was found to improve more rapidly for the equilibrium dissolution model, it is also shown that dissolution models that promote rapid DNAPL disappearance produce greater prediction uncertainty in the aqueous-phase flux reduction.
Ephedra and its application to sport performance: another concern for the athletic trainer?

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The ma huang herb, otherwise known as ephedra, has gained widespread popularity as an ergogenic supplement. With the sympathomimetic alkaloid ephedrine as its primary active ingredient, ma huang is marketed to reduce fatigue; increase strength, power, and speed; decrease reaction time; and improve body composition. Although numerous side effects have been associated with the use of ma huang, its popularity in athletes continues to grow. This review provides rationale for the ergogenic claims regarding ma huang and compares and contrasts those claims with data from scientifically controlled investigations. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE and SPORT Discus were searched from 1970 to 2000 using the key words ma huang, ephedra, and ephedrine in combination with humans, exercise, performance, and side effects. DATA SYNTHESIS Ephedrine has been used alone or in combination with other drugs as an effective weight-loss agent. The weight loss has been attributed to thermogenic and lipolytic effects which, in combination with the central nervous system stimulating effects, have also resulted in its use as an ergogenic aid. Most of the scientific data, however, do not support manufacturers' ergogenic claims, and numerous side effects have been associated with ephedrine use. Thus, the safety and efficacy of ma huang as an ergogenic supplement must be questioned. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS It appears that the risks associated with the use of ma huang far outweigh any possible ergogenic benefits. Thus, it is extremely important that athletic trainers educate athletes on these issues so they can continue to perform at an optimum level in a safe and healthy manner.
Quantitation of glyphosate, glufosinate, and AMPA in drinking water and surface waters using direct injection and charged-surface ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract:Herbicides glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) and glufosinate (2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)butanoic acid) and the main transformation product of glyphosate, aminomethanephosphonic acid (AMPA), are challenging to analyze for in environmental samples. The quantitative method developed by this study adapts previously standardized dechlorination procedures coupled to a novel charged surface C18 column, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, polarity switching, and direct injection. The method was applied to chlorinated tap water, as well as river samples, collected in the City of Winnipeg and rural Manitoba, Canada. Using only syringe filtration without derivatization, the validated method resulted in good accuracies in both tap and surface water, at both 2 and 20 μg L-1. Method limits of detection (MLD) and quantification (MLQ) ranged from 0.022/0.074 to 0.11/0.36 μg L-1, with precisions of 0.46-2.2% (intraday) and 1.3-7.3% (interday). The mean (SEM) of the pesticides in μg L-1 for tap water were 0.11 (0.007) (AMPA), glufosinate and glyphosate < MLDs; and for Red River water were 0.56 (0.045) (AMPA), glufosinate < MLQ, and glyphosate 0.40 (0.072). For the smaller tributaries, glufosinate was >MLD but < MLQ once and that was for Shannon Creek at 0.2 μg L-1. For the remaining rivers, the mean concentrations ranged from 0.31 to 3.1 μg L-1 for AMPA, and 0.087-0.53 μg L-1 for glyphosate. The method will be ideal for supporting monitoring and risk assessment programs that require high throughput sampling and quantitative methods capable of producing robust results that leverages chromatographic and mass spectrometric paradigms instead of being extraction technology focused.

Abstract:Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer. This strong impact of an urban effluent was revealed from the Br/Cl ratio, boron concentrations and δ 11 B isotopic signature of the groundwater in the direct vicinity of the infiltration point. With increasing distance from that point, dilution with groundwater rapidly attenuates the urban signal from these hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers. Nevertheless, a gadolinium anomaly, resulting from discharges of urban wastewater containing the contrast agents used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlights the presence of a wastewater plume further along the flow line, that comes with a series of organic molecules, including pharmaceutical residues. Monitoring persistent or reactive molecules along the plume provides a more detailed understanding of the transfer of CECs into groundwater bodies. This highlights the relevance of pharmaceutical compounds as co-tracers for WWTP plume delineation. The present multi-tracer approach for groundwater resource vulnerability towards CECs allows a more in-depth understanding of contaminant transfer and their fate in groundwater.

Abstract:Micropollutants are frequently detected in groundwater. Thus, the question arises whether they are eliminated by natural attenuation so that pesticide degradation would be observed with increasing residence time in groundwater. Conventional analytical approaches rely on parent compound/metabolite ratios. These are difficult to interpret if metabolites are sorbed or further transformed. Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) presents an alternative for identifying degradation based on the analysis of natural isotope abundances in pesticides and their changes during degradation. However, CSIA by gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry is challenged by the low concentrations (ng/L) of micropollutants in groundwater. Consequently, large amounts of water need to be sampled requiring enrichment and clean-up steps from interfering matrix effects that must not introduce artefacts in measured isotope values. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of isotope ratio measurements of the frequently detected micropollutants atrazine, desethylatrazine and 2,6-dichlorobenzamide after enrichment from large water volumes (up to 100 L) by solid-phase extraction with consecutive clean-up by HPLC. Associated artefacts of isotope discrimination were found to depend on numerous factors including organic matter content and extraction volume. This emphasizes the necessity to perform a careful method evaluation of sample preparation and sample pre-treatment prior reliable CSIA.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely present in aqueous environments and plays a significant role in pollutant mitigation and transformation. So far, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) has been widely applied to quantify fluorescent DOM. However, this approach fails to provide accurate concentration of DOM when fluorescent contaminants exist. In this work, a new method, prior linear decomposition (PLD), is developed to solve this problem by introducing prior information, i.e., EEMs of DOM, into data decomposition. First, EEM of humic acid (HA) with different numbers of random Gaussian peaks are tested to confirm the robustness of PLD. The percentages for the relative errors within 5% are found to be 97.7% and 69% using PLD and PARAFAC, respectively. Then, the determination of mixture of HA with several contaminants is performed, validating the feasibility of DOM quantification and capability of contaminant diagnosis using PLD for synthetic water samples. Finally, DOM-containing natural water samples collected from a polluted lake, river and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) are measured. The testing results confirm that PLD provides an accurate result with less evaluated error than PARAFAC and the EEMs of the contaminants can be inferred precisely. This work clearly demonstrates that PLD offers a robust approach for quantifying fluorescent DOM, which is of great significance in both natural and engineered aqueous environments.

Abstract:Pollutions on and within the underground poses risks for groundwater contamination and is a widespread global problem. Common remediation methods based on digging and removal can be expensive and have limitations, while in-situ remediation is an attractive alternative. However, there is a need to develop tools to monitor the effectiveness both in terms of the successful injection of remediation fluids but also the effectiveness of the treatment, i.e., degree of degradation/removal of the pollutants and possible metabolites. This paper presents a methodology for monitoring the changes following an in-situ remediation treatment of a site contaminated with chlorinated solvents. The methodology consists of two different methods, where Direct Current resistivity and time-domain Induced Polarization (DCIP) was used to acquire daily data and geochemical analyses on water samples were collected approximately every three months. The geophysical results provide insights on how the injected fluids are spreading and assist in acquiring a better understanding of the geological and hydrogeological system. On the other hand, the geochemical sampling enhances our knowledge about the hydrochemistry of the system and the concentration of the pollutants. Our research highlights the challenges of monitoring in-situ bioremediation experiments in complex environments and in cases where pollutants are situated in low hydraulic conductivity formations. The joint interpretation of the data shows the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to understand complex systems.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities cause the release of vast amounts of contaminants into the environment which eventually reach even groundwater resources. With usually sparse regulatory monitoring of limited priority compounds, the large spectrum of contaminants, and the intricacies of intra- and inter-annual contaminant dynamics, such as the emergence and mobilisation of contaminants, are easily overlooked. Utilizing an 6-year record of untargeted LC-MS assessment of dissolved organic, we report the detection and tracing of selected environmental chemicals in the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory (central Germany), representing a model groundwater flow system under different land use. The insect repellent DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) and the coniferous resin acid 7-ODAA (7-oxodehydroabietic acids) show phases of seasonal dynamics in line with their expected periods of release. The legacy herbicides simazine, the triazine transformation product hydroxypropazine, and the flame retardant/plasticiser TPP (triphenyl phosphate) occurred episodically at various locations in the fractured sedimentary bedrock. Within the period of monitoring, extreme weather events (i.e., the severe 2018 drought) and extreme subsurface responses (i.e., 5-year groundwater highstand 2018) likely contributed to long-term organic matter dynamics, potentially causing re-emergence of legacy agrochemicals. This investigation points to the persistence and mobilisation of anthropogenic contaminants, and highlights the importance of long-term combined untargeted and targeted analysis of the groundwater dissolved organic matter for understanding subsurface ecosystems processes. The results add a note of caution for regulatory monitoring since also legacy contaminant levels may considerably vary over time.

Abstract:Different groups of organic micropollutants including pharmaceuticals and pesticides have emerged in the environment in the last years, resulting in a rise in environmental and human health risks. In order to face up and evaluate these risks, there is an increasing need to assess their occurrence in the environment. Therefore, many studies in the past couple of decades were focused on the improvements in organic micropollutants' extraction efficiency from the different environmental matrices, as well as their mass spectrometry detection parameters and acquisition modes. This paper presents different sampling methodologies and high-resolution mass spectrometry-based non-target screening workflows for the identification of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and their transformation products in different kinds of water (domestic wastewater and river water). Identification confidence was increased including retention time prediction in the workflow. The applied methodology, using a passive sampling technique, allowed for the identification of 85 and 47 contaminants in the wastewater effluent and river water, respectively. Finally, contaminants' prioritization was performed through semi-quantification in grab samples as a fundamental step for monitoring schemes.

High-Resolution Depth-Discrete Analysis of PFAS Distribution and Leaching for a Vadose-Zone Source at an AFFF-Impacted Site

Cost-effective Sampling Network Design for Contaminant Plume Monitoring under General Hydrogeological Conditions.

Abstract:A new simulation–optimization methodology is developed for cost-effective sampling network design associated with long-term monitoring of large-scale contaminant plumes. The new methodology is similar in concept to the one presented by Reed et al. (Reed, P.M., Minsker, B.S., Valocchi, A.J., 2000a. Cost-effective long-term groundwater monitoring design using a genetic algorithm and global mass interpolation. Water Resour. Res. 36 (12), 3731–3741) in that an optimization model based on a genetic algorithm is coupled with a flow and transport simulator and a global mass estimator to search for optimal sampling strategies. However, this study introduces the first and second moments of a three-dimensional contaminant plume as new constraints in the optimization formulation, and demonstrates the proposed methodology through a real-world application. The new moment constraints significantly increase the accuracy of the plume interpolated from the sampled data relative to the plume simulated by the transport model. The plume interpolation approaches employed in this study are ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighting (IDW). The proposed methodology is applied to the monitoring of plume evolution during a pump-and-treat operation at a large field site. It is shown that potential cost savings up to 65.6% may be achieved without any significant loss of accuracy in mass and moment estimations. The IDW-based interpolation method is computationally more efficient than the OK-based method and results in more potential cost savings. However, the OK-based method leads to more accurate mass and moment estimations. A comparison of the sampling designs obtained with and without the moment constraints points to their importance in ensuring a robust long-term monitoring design that is both cost-effective and accurate in mass and moment estimations. Additional analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of the optimal sampling design to the various coefficients included in the objective function of the optimization model.
Automated method for determining the flow of surface functionalized nanoparticles through a hydraulically fractured mineral formation using plasmonic silver nanoparticles

Abstract:Quantifying nanoparticle (NP) transport within porous geological media is imperative in the design of tracers and sensors to monitor the environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing that has seen increasing concern over recent years, in particular the potential pollution and contamination of aquifers. The surface chemistry of a NP defining many of its solubility and transport properties means that there is a wide range of functionality that it is desirable to screen for optimum transport. Most prior transport methods are limited in determining if significant adsorption occurs of a NP over a limited column distance, however, translating this to effects over large distances is difficult. Herein we report an automated method that allows for the simulation of adsorption effects of a dilute nanoparticle solution over large distances under a range of solution parameters. Using plasmonic silver NPs and UV-visible spectroscopic detection allows for low concentrations to be used while offering greater consistency in peak absorbance leading to a higher degree of data reliability and statistics. As an example, breakthrough curves were determined for mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) and cysteamine (CYS) functionalized Ag NPs passing through Ottawa sand (typical proppant material) immobile phase (C) or bypassing the immobile phase (C0). Automation allows for multiple sequences such that the absorption plateau after each breakthrough and the rate of breakthrough can be compared for multiple runs to provide statistical analysis. The mobility of the NPs as a function of pH is readily determined. The stickiness (α) of the NP to the immobile phase calculated from the C/C0 ratio shows that MSA-Ag NPs show good mobility, with a slight decrease around neutral pH, while CYS-Ag NPs shows an almost sinusoidal variation. The automated process described herein allows for rapid screening of NP functionality, as a function of immobile phase (proppant versus reservoir material), hydraulic fracturing fluid additives (guar, surfactant) and conditions (pH, temperature).

Abstract:Mercury is a contaminant of global concern. The use of elemental mercury in various (former) industrial processes, such as chlorine production at chlor-alkali plants, is known to have resulted in soil and groundwater contaminations worldwide. However, the subsurface transport behaviour of elemental mercury as an immiscible dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in porous media has received minimal attention to date. Even though, such insight would aid in the remediation effort of mercury contaminated sites. Therefore, in this study a detailed field characterization of elemental mercury DNAPL distribution with depth was performed together with two-phase flow modelling, using STOMP. This is to evaluate the dynamics of mercury DNAPL migration and the controls on its distribution in saturated porous media. Using a CPT-probe mounted with a digital camera, in-situ mercury DNAPL depth distribution was obtained at a former chlor-alkali-plant, down to 9 m below ground surface. Images revealing the presence of silvery mercury DNAPL droplets were used to quantify its distribution, characteristics and saturation, using an image analysis method. These field-observations with depth were compared with results from a one-dimensional two-phase flow model simulation for the same transect. Considering the limitations of this approach, simulations reasonably reflected the variability and range of the mercury DNAPL distribution. To further explore the impact of mercury's physical properties in comparison with more common DNAPLs, the migration of mercury and PCE DNAPL in several typical hydrological scenarios was simulated. Comparison of the simulations suggest that mercury's higher density is the overall controlling factor in controlling its penetration in saturated porous media, despite its higher resistance to flow due to its higher viscosity. Based on these results the hazard of spilled mercury DNAPL to cause deep contamination of groundwater systems seems larger than for any other DNAPL.
