Abstract:The electronic structures of actinide systems are extremely complicated and pose considerable challenges both experimentally and theoretically because of significant electron correlation and relativistic effects. Here we report an investigation of the electronic structure and chemical bonding of uranium dioxides, UO2(-) and UO2, using photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemistry. The electron affinity of UO2 is measured to be 1.159(20) eV. Intense detachment bands are observed from the UO2(-) low-lying (7sσg)(2)(5fϕu)(1) orbitals and the more deeply bound O2p-based molecular orbitals which are separated by a large energy gap from the U-based orbitals. Surprisingly, numerous weak photodetachment transitions are observed in the gap region due to extensive two-electron transitions, suggesting strong electron correlations among the (7sσg)(2)(5fϕu)(1) electrons in UO2(-) and the (7sσg)(1)(5fϕu)(1) electrons in UO2. These observations are interpreted using multi-reference ab initio calculations with inclusion of spin-orbit coupling. The strong electron correlations and spin-orbit couplings generate orders-of-magnitude more detachment transitions from UO2(-) than expected on the basis of the Koopmans' theorem. The current experimental data on UO2(-) provide a long-sought opportunity to arbitrating various relativistic quantum chemistry methods aimed at handling systems with strong electron correlations.

Abstract:While uranyl halide complexes [UO2(halogen)(n)](2-n) (n = 1, 2, 4) are ubiquitous, the tricoordinate species have been relatively unknown until very recently. Here photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemistry are used to investigate the bonding and stability of a series of gaseous tricoordinate uranyl complexes, UO2X3- (X = F, Cl, Br, I). Isolated UO2X3- ions are produced by electrospray ionization and observed to be highly stable with very large adiabatic electron detachment energies: 6.25, 6.64, 6.27, and 5.60 eV for X = F, Cl, Br, and I, respectively Theoretical calculations reveal that the frontier molecular orbitals are mainly of uranyl U-O bonding character in UO2F3-, but they are from the ligand valence np lone pairs in the heavier halogen complexes. Extensive bonding analyses are carried out for UO2X3- as well as for the doubly charged tetracoordinate complexes (UO2X42-), showing that the U-X bonds are dominated by ionic interactions with weak covalency. The U-X bond strength decreases down the periodic table from F to I. Coulomb barriers and dissociation energies of UO2X42- -> UO2X3- + X- are calculated, revealing that all gaseous dianions are in fact metastable. The dielectric constant of the environment is shown to be the key in controlling the thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of the tetracoordinate uranyl complexes via modulation of the ligand-ligand Coulomb repulsions.
Probing the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of Mono-Uranium Oxides with Different Oxidation States: Uox- and Uox (X=3-5)

Abstract:Uranium oxide clusters UOx(-) (x = 3-5) were produced by laser vaporization and characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum theory. Photoelectron spectra were obtained for UOx(-) at various photon energies with well-resolved detachment transitions and vibrational resolution for x = 3 and 4. The electron affinities of UOx were measured as 1.12, 3.60, and 4.02 eV for x = 3, 4, and 5, respectively. The geometric and electronic structures of both the anions and the corresponding neutrals were investigated by quasi-relativistic electron-correlation quantum theory to interpret the photoelectron spectra and to provide insight into their chemical bonding. For UOx clusters with x ≤ 3, the O atoms appear as divalent closed-shell anions around the U atom, which is in various oxidation states from U(II)(fds)(4) in UO to U(VI)(fds)(0) in UO3. For x > 3, there are no longer sufficient valence electrons from the U atom to fill the O(2p) shell, resulting in fractionally charged and multicenter delocalized valence states for the O ligands as well as η(1)- or η(2)-bonded O2 units, with unusual spin couplings and complicated electron correlations in the unfilled poly oxo shell. The present work expands our understanding of both the bonding capacities of actinide elements with extended spdf valence shells as well as the multitude of oxygen's charge and bonding states.
A spectroscopic and computational evaluation of uranyl oxo engagement with transition metal cations

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of five novel Cd2+/UO¬22+ heterometallic complexes that feature Cd-oxo distances ranging from 78% to 171% of the sum of the van der Waals radii for these atoms. This work marks an extension of our previously reported Pb2+/UO22+ and Ag+/UO22+ complexes, yet with much more pronounced structural and spectroscopic effects resulting from Cd-oxo interactions. We observe a major shift in the U=O symmetric stretch and significant uranyl bond length asymmetry. The ρbcp¬ values calculated using Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) support the asymmetry displayed in the structural data and indicate a decrease in covalent character in U=O bonds with close Cd-oxo contacts; more so than in related compounds containing Pb2+ and Ag+. Second Order Perturbation Theory (SOPT) analysis reveals that O spx Cd s is the most significant orbital overlap and U=O bonding and antibonding orbitals also contribute to the interaction (U=O σ/π Cd d and Cd s U=O σ/π*). The overall stabilization energies for these interactions were lower than those in previously reported Pb2+ cations, yet larger than related Ag+ compounds. Analysis of the equatorial coordination sphere of the Cd2+/UO¬22+ compounds (along with Pb2+/UO¬22+ complexes) reveals that 7-coodinate uranium favors closer, stronger Mn+-oxo contacts. These results indicate that U=O bond strength tuning is possible with judicious choice of metal cations for oxo interactions and equatorial ligand coordination.

Abstract:Monodentate organophosphorus ligands have been used for the extraction of the uranyl ion (UO22+) for over half a century and have exhibited exceptional extractability and selectivity toward the uranyl ion due to the presence of the phosphoryl group (O═P). Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is the extractant of the world-renowned PUREX process, which selectively recovers uranium from spent nuclear fuel. Trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO) shows extractability toward the uranyl ion that far exceeds that for other metal ions, and it has been used in the TRPO process. To date, however, the mechanism of the high affinity of the phosphoryl group for UO22+ remains elusive. We herein investigate the bonding covalency in a series of complexes of UO22+ with TRPO by oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Four TRPO ligands with different R substituents are examined in this work, for which both the ligands and their uranyl complexes are crystallized and investigated. The study of the electronic structure of the TRPO ligands reveals that the two TRPO molecules, irrespective of their substituents, can engage in σ- and π-type interactions with U 5f and 6d orbitals in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes. Although both the axial (Oyl) and equatorial (Oeq) oxygen atoms in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes contribute to the X-ray absorption, the first pre-edge feature in the O K-edge XAS with a small intensity is exclusively contributed by Oeq and is assigned to the transition from Oeq 1s orbitals to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of 1b1u + 1b2u + 1b3u symmetries resulting from the σ- and π-type mixing between U 5f and Oeq 2p orbitals. The small intensity in the experimental spectra is consistent with the small amount of Oeq 2p character in these orbitals for the four UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes as obtained by Mulliken population analysis. The DFT calculations demonstrate that the U 6d orbitals are also involved in the U-TRPO bonding interactions in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes. The covalent bonding interactions between TRPO and UO22+, especially the contributions from U 5f orbitals, while appearing to be small, are sufficiently responsible for the exceptional extractability and selectivity of monodentate organophosphorus ligands for the uranyl ion. Our results provide valuable insight into the fundamental actinide chemistry and are expected to directly guide actinide separation schemes needed for the development of advanced nuclear fuel cycle technologies.

Relativistic Embedded Equation-of-Motion Coupled-Cluster Approach to the Core-Ionized States of Actinides: A Case Study of Uranyl(VI) in Cs$_2$UO$_2$Cl$_4$

Abstract:We investigate the core-level ionization energies of the bare uranyl ion (UO$_2^{2+}$) and its interaction with X-rays when it is hosted in the Cs$_2$UO$_2$Cl$_4$ crystalline environment using a recent implementation of the core-valence-separated relativistic equation-of-motion coupled-cluster method (CVS-EOM-CC). Our study evaluates different relativistic Hamiltonians, assesses basis set and virtual space truncation effects, and examines the role of orbital correlation and relaxation in simulating the spectroscopic observables. The results of this investigation highlight the importance of computing two-electron interactions beyond the zeroth-order truncation (i.e. the Coulomb term) when working in the tender and hard X-ray ranges. Additionally, we compare different structural models using the frozen density embedding method (FDE). By contrasting the bare and embedded uranyl models, we observe significant changes in binding energies, highlighting the influence of the equatorial ligands of the uranyl ion on its spectroscopic observables. A comparison between the embedded uranyl and supermolecular systems, excluding the cesium atoms, reveals systematic differences, with binding energy variations from experimental data remaining within 10 eV. Notably, the computed spin-orbit splittings for U $4d$ and $4f$ deviate by less than 0.7 eV, demonstrating the validity of this protocol for computing binding energies in the soft X-ray range.

Abstract:Understanding of the nature and extent of chemical bonding in uranyl coordination complexes is crucial for the design of new ligands for nuclear waste separation, uranium extraction from seawater, and other applications. We report here the synthesis, infrared spectroscopic characterization, and quantum chemical studies of a molecular uranyl-di-15-crown-5 complex. The structure and bonding of this unique complex featuring a distinctive 6-fold coplanar coordination staggered sandwich structure and an unusual non-perpendicular orientation of the uranyl moiety are evaluated using density functional theory and chemical bonding analyses. The results provide fundamental understanding of the coordination interaction of uranyl with oxygen-donor ligands.
The Structural and Spectroscopic Properties for Uranium Oxides

Abstract:The equilibrium structures, the charge population, and the spectroscopic properties of UO, UO 2 , UO 3 , and U 2 O 3 molecules are systematically investigated using the density functional theory （DFT） with the method of generalized gradient approximation （GGA）. The bond lengths and the vibrational frequencies of the ground states of UO, UO 2 , and UO 3 molecules are all in agreement with available experimental data. For U 2 O 3 molecules, our calculations indicate that the ground state of the U 2 O 3 molecule is an X 7 A ′ 1 state with D 3h （trigonal bipyramid） symmetry （R 1 （U–O）=0.2113 nm, R 2 （U 1 –U 2 ）=0.2921 nm, ∠U 1 OU 2 = 87.5 , dihedral angle Θ（U,O 1 ,O 2 ,O 3 ）=62.40 ）. The harmonic frequency, the IR intensity and the spin density of the U 2 O 3 molecule are all obtained for the first time in theory. For the ground state of U 2 O 3 molecules, the vibrational frequencies are 178.46 （A ′ 1 ）, 276.79 （E ′′ 1 ）, 310.77 （E ′ 1 ）, 396.63 （A ′′ 2 ）, 579.15 （E ′ 1 ）, and 614.98 （A ′ 1 ） cm 1 . The vibrational modes corresponding to the IR maximum peaks are worked out for UO 3 and U 2 O 3 molecules. Besides, the results of Gophinatan–Jug bond order indicate that UO, UO 2 , and UO 3 molecules possess U=O double bonds and that the U 2 O 3 molecule possesses U–O single bonds and a U–U single bond.
Promising Density Functional Theory Methods for Predicting the Structures of Uranyl Complexes

Abstract:The structural parameters of uranyl complexes may provide important hints for understanding the electronic structure of the U–X (ligand) bond. The present study aims to identify a reliable theoretical method to simulate the structures of different uranyl complexes. Examining the performance of different relativistic effective core pseudopotentials (RECPs) and different density functional theory (DFT) methods, we found that the overall performances of BB1K/(SDD-MWB60:6-311G(d,p)) (M2-B1) and LC-BLYP/(SDD-MWB60:6-311G(d,p)) (M7-B1) methods are better than all the other examined ones (including the popular B3LYP method). Good linear correlations have been achieved between the calculation results with M2-B1 or M7-B1 and the experimental ones (X-ray crystal structure). The R2 values of both these methods are about 0.985, and the SD values are both about 0.05 A for 68 U–X bond distances. On this basis, the preliminary ligand structure-binding ability analysis of U–O bonds and the elucidation of the binding mode of the azide group in the concerned U–N(azide) compound have been provided.

Capturing the ground state of uranium dioxide from first principles: crystal distortion, magnetic structure, and phonons

Abstract:Uranium dioxide (UO$_2$) remains a formidable challenge for first-principles approaches, due to the complex interplay among spin-orbit coupling, Mott physics, magnetic ordering, and crystal distortions. Here we use DFT+$U$ to explore UO$_2$ at zero temperature, incorporating all the aforementioned phenomena. The technical challenge is to navigate the many metastable electronic states produced by DFT+$U$, which is acomplished using $f$-orbital occupation matrix control to search for the ground state. We restrict our search to the high-symmetry ferromagnetic phase, including spin-orbit coupling, which produces a previously unreported occupation matrix. This newfound occupation matrix is then used as an initialization to explore the broken symmetry phases. We find the oxygen cage distortion of the 3k antiferromagnetic state to be in excellent agreement with experiments, and both the spin-orbit coupling and the Hubbard $U$ are critical ingredients. We demonstrate that only select phonon modes have a strong dependence on the Hubbard $U$, whereas magnetic ordering has only a small influence overall. We perform measurements of the phonon dispersion curves using inelastic neutron scattering, and our calculations show good agreement when using reasonable values of $U$. The quantitative success of DFT+$U$ warrants exploration of thermal transport and other observables within this level of theory.

Theoretical Investigation on One-Electron ϕ···ϕ Bonding in Diuranium Inverse Sandwich U2B6 Complex Enabled by a B6 Ring

Abstract:Traditional σ, π, and δ types of covalent chemical bonding have been extensively studied for nearly a century. In contrast, ϕ-type bonding involving nf (n = 4, 5) orbitals has received less attention due to their high contraction and minimal orbital overlap. Herein, we theoretically predict a singly occupied ϕ···ϕ bonding between two 5f orbitals, facilitated by B6 group orbitals in the hexa-boron diuranium inverse sandwich structure of U2B6. From ab initio quantum chemical calculations, the global minimum structure has a septuplet state with D6h symmetry. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that the 5f and 6d atomic orbitals of the two uranium atoms interact with the ligand orbitals of the central B6 ring, exhibiting favorable energy matching and symmetry compatibility to form delocalized σ-, π-, δ-, and ϕ-type bonding orbitals. Notably, even though the ϕ···ϕ bonding orbital is singly occupied, it still has a significant role in stability and cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, the U2B6 cluster model can be viewed as a building block of UB2 solid materials from both geometric and electronic perspectives. This work predicts the first example of ϕ···ϕ bonding, highlighting the complexity and diversity of chemical bonds formed in actinide boride clusters.
On the Electronic Structure of Molecular UO2 in the Presence of Ar Atoms: Evidence for Direct U-Ar Bonding.

Abstract:Calculations via scalar-relativistic density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio CCSD(T) methodologies are used to explore the possibility of direct interactions between molecular UO2 and Ar atoms. The 3Hg electronic state of UO2, which is an excited state of the isolated molecule, exhibits significant bonding to Ar in the model complexes UO2(Ar) and UO2(Ar)5. The calculated vibrational frequencies of ground-state 3Phiu UO2 and UO2(Ar)5 with an (fphi)1(fdelta)1 electron configuration agree well with the observed frequencies of UO2 in solid neon and solid argon, respectively. The results strongly suggest that the ground electron configuration of UO2 changes from 5f17s1 to 5f2 when the matrix host is changed from neon to argon.

Abstract:The ground- and excited-state geometries and electronic structures of the isoelectronic series of molecules UN2, NUO+, and UO 2 2+ are investigated by using relativistic density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio wavefunction theory (WFT). Scalar relativistic and spin–orbit-coupled quantum chemical methods at the CASPT2, RASPT2, CCSD(T), DFT and TDDFT levels are applied. Relativistic effects as elucidated by Pekka Pyykkö play an important role in these uranium compounds, in particular for the excited states. The three molecular species exhibit significantly different spectroscopic properties, concerning their excitation energies, bond lengths and vibrations. Density functional approaches yield qualitatively correct results for the ground states and the valence → U.7s,6d excited states. However, the performance of TDDFT for valence → U.5f type excitations (in particular of UN2 and NUO+) is less satisfactory, indicating the importance of the self-interaction correction for such excitations.

Abstract:Reactions of laser-ablated U atoms and H2O2 molecules produce UO2, H2UO2, and UO2(OH)(2) as major products and U(OH)(2) and HU(O)OH as minor products. Complementary information is obtained from similar reactions of U atoms with D2O2, with H-2 + O-2 mixtures, and with H2O in excess Ar. Through extensive relativistic density functional theory calculations, we have determined the geometry structures and ground states of these U species with a variety of oxidation states U-II, U-IV, U-V, and U-VI. The calculated vibrational frequencies, IR intensities, and isotopic frequency ratios are in good agreement with the experimental values, thus supporting assignments of the observed matrix IR spectra. We propose that the reactions proceed by forming an energized [U(OH)(4)]* intermediate from reactions of the excited U atom with two H2O2 molecules. Because of the special stability of the U-VI oxidation state, this intermediate decomposes to the UO2(OH)(2) molecule, which reveals a distinctive difference between the chemistries of U and Th, where the major product in analogous Th reactions is the tetrahedral Th(OH)(4) molecule owing to the stable Th-IV oxidation state.

Abstract:A detailed exploration of the $f$-atomic orbital occupancy space for UO$_2$ is performed using a first principles approach based on density functional theory (DFT), employing a full hybrid functional within a systematic basis set. Specifically, the PBE0 functional is combined with an occupancy biasing scheme implemented in a wavelet-based algorithm which is adapted to large supercells. The results are compared with previous DFT+U calculations reported in the literature, while dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) is also performed to provide a further base for comparison. This work shows that the computational complexity of the energy landscape of a correlated $f$-electron oxide is much richer than has previously been demonstrated. The resulting calculations provide evidence of the existence of multiple previously unexplored metastable electronic states of UO$_2$, including those with energies which are lower than previously reported ground states.

Abstract:The uranyl tetrachloride dianion (UO2Cl42-) is observed in the gas phase using electrospray ionization and investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemical calculations. Photoelectron spectra of UO2Cl42- are obtained at various photon energies and congested spectral features are observed. The free UO2Cl42- dianion is found to be highly stable with an adiabatic electron binding energy of 2.40 eV. Ab initio calculations are carried out and used to interpret the photoelectron spectra and elucidate the electronic structure of UO2Cl42-. The calculations show that the frontier molecular orbitals in UO2Cl42- are dominated by the ligand Cl 3p orbitals, while the U-O bonding orbitals are much more stable. The electronic structure of UO2Cl42- is compared with that of the recently reported UO2Cl42- [P. D. Dau, J. Su, H. T. Liu, J. B. Liu, D. L. Huang, J. Li, and L. S. Wang, Chem. Sci. 3 1137 (2012)]. The electron binding energy of UO2Cl42- is found to be 1.3 eV greater than that of UO2Cl42-. Abstract:The existence of a novel octahedral UO6 complex had been suggested by Pyykko et al [Pyykko, P.; Runeberg, N., Straka, M; Dyall, K. G Chem. Phys Lett 2000, 328, 415]. We have now investigated the stability, the geometric and electronic structures, and the vibrations of various UO6 molecules, using spin-orbit density functional and scalar-relativistic coupled-cluster approaches We find four different (meta-)stable species, namely D-3(2h)-UO2(eta(2)-O-2(center dot))(2) at lowest energy, C-3(2 nu)-UO4 center dot(eta(2)-O-2(center dot)) and D-1(3)-U(eta(2)-O-2)(3) at medium energies, and O-1(h)-UO6 at highest energy The decay of O-h-UO6 occurs via an activated spin-flip mechanism. The UO6 species correspond to local minima on singlet and triplet energy surfaces and might be trapped in noble gas matrices Experimentally, the four species might be identified through their vibrational spectra Uranium is best described as coordinated by oxygen atoms in various oxidation states as oxo O2-, oxido(I) O center dot-, peroxido O-2(2-), and superoxido O-2(center dot-) ligands. The occurrence of monovalent oxygen is remarkable The resulting characterization of the central ion as U-VI in all four cases does not fully reflect the electronic differences, nor the "valence-activity" of the U-6p(6) semicore shell

Abstract:The electronic absorption and emission spectra of free UO2F2 and its water solvated complexes below 32,000 cm(-1) are investigated at the levels of ab initio CASPT2 and CCSD(T) with inclusion of scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects. The influence of the water coordination on the electronic spectra of UO2F2 is explored by investigating the excited states of solvated complexes (H2O)nUO2F2 (n = 1-3). In these uranyl complexes, water coordination is found to have appreciable influence on the (3)Δ (Ω = 1g) character of the luminescent state and on the electronic spectral shape. The simulated luminescence spectral curves based on the calculated spectral parameters of (H2O)nUO2F2 from CCSD(T) approach agree well with experimental spectra in aqueous solution at both near-liquid-helium temperature and room temperature. The possible luminescence spectra of free UO2F2 in gas phase are predicted on the basis of CASPT2 and CCSD(T) results, respectively, by considering three symmetric vibration modes. The effect of competition between spin-orbit coupling and ligand field repulsion on the luminescent state properties is discussed.
