Abstract:Ru(II)- and Cu(I)-based photosensitizers featuring the recently developed biipo ligand (16H-benzo-[4',5']-isoquinolino-[2',1',:1,2]-imidazo-[4,5-f]-[1,10]-phenanthrolin-16-one) were comprehensively investigated by X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, and especially several time-resolved spectroscopic methods covering all time scales from femto- to milliseconds. The analysis of the experimental results is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The biipo ligand consists of a coordinating 1,10-phenanthroline moiety fused with a 1,8-naphthalimide unit, which results in an extended π-system with an incorporated electron acceptor moiety. In a previous study, it was shown that this ligand enabled a Ru(II) complex that is an efficient singlet oxygen producer and of potential use for other light-driven applications due to its long emission lifetime. The goal of our here presented research is to provide a full spectroscopic picture of the processes that follow optical excitation. Interestingly, the Ru(II) and Cu(I) complexes differ in their characteristics even though the lowest electronically excited states involve in both cases the biipo ligand. The combined spectroscopic results indicate that an emissive 3MLCT state and a rather dark 3LC state are populated, each to some extent. For the Cu(I) complex, most of the excited population ends up in the 3LC state with an extraordinary lifetime of 439 μs in the solid state at 20 K, while a significant population of the 3MLCT state causes luminescence for the Ru(II) complex. Hence, there is a balance between these two states, which can be tuned by altering the metal center or even by thermal energy, as suggested by the temperature-dependent experiments.
Long Excited-State Lifetimes in Three-Coordinate Copper(I) Com-plexes via Triplet–Triplet Energy Transfer to Pyrene-Decorated Isocy-anides

Abstract:There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically-driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1–Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet-triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNacMe) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giv-ing the general formula Cu(CyNacNacMe)(CN-Ar) (CN-dmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide for Cu1; CN-pyr = 1-pyrenyl isocyanide for Cu2; CN-dmp-pyr = 2,6-dimethyl-4-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl isocyanide for Cu3). The nature, energies, and dynamics of the low-energy triplet excited states are assessed with a combination of photoluminescence measurements at room temperature and 77 K, ultrafast transient absorp-tion (UFTA) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The complexes featuring pyrene-decorated isocyanides (Cu2 and Cu3) exhibit extended excited-state lifetimes resulting from triplet–triplet energy transfer (TTET) between the short-lived charge-transfer excited state (3CT) and the long-lived pyrene-centered triplet state (3pyr). This TTET process is irreversible in Cu3, producing exclusively the 3pyr state, and in Cu2 the 3CT and 3pyr states are nearly isoenergetic, enabling reversible TTET and long-lived 3CT luminescence. The improved photophysical proper-ties in Cu2 and Cu3 result in photocatalytic activity for stilbene E/Z isomerization via triplet energy transfer and photoredox reactivity in trans-formations involving hydrodebromination and C–O bond activation. These results illustrate that the extended excited-state lifetimes achieved through TTET resulted in newly conceived photosynthetically-relevant earth-abundant transition metal complexes.

Excited State Dynamics of a Conformationally Fluxional Copper Coordination Complex

Abstract:The conversion of solar energy into chemical fuel represents a capstone goal of the 21st century and has the potential to supply terawatts of power in a globally distributed manner. However, the disparate time scales of photodriven charge separation (∼fs) and steps in chemical reactions (∼μs) represent an inherent bottleneck in solar-to-fuels technology. To address this discrepancy, we are developing earth-abundant coordination complexes that undergo light-induced conformational rearrangements such that charge separation (CS) is hastened, while charge recombination (CR) is slowed. To these ends, we report the preparation and characterization of a new series of conformationally fluxional copper coordination complexes that contain a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) fluorophore as part of their ligand scaffold. Structural and spectroscopic characterization of the Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes formed with these ligands in their ground states establish oxidation state-dependent conformational dynamicity, while time-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopies define the photophysical parameters of photo-induced excited states. Building on initial reports with a related set of molecules, the improved ligand design presented here greatly simplifies the observed photophysics, effectively shutting down unwanted ligand-centered excited states previously observed. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) analyses reveal an unusual metal-to-TICT electronic transition only reported once before, and though the formation of a CS state is not observed directly through experiments, TDDFT geometry optimizations in the excited states support the formation of transient Cu(II) CS species, lending credence to the potential success of our approach. These studies establish a clear model for the excited state dynamics at play in proof-of-concept systems and clarify key design parameters for future optimizations toward achieving long-lived CS via photoinduced conformational gating.

Abstract:This chapter briefly reviews the background for, and recent developments in, photochemistry and photo-applications of Cu(I) diimine complexes. The advantages of Cu(I) diimine complexes for a plethora of light-driven applications lie in intense absorption of visible light (due to the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition), the absence of deactivating d-d excited states in a d 10 -complex, and the Earth-abundance of copper. Their disadvantages include kinetic instability, and, the curse of the 1st row transition metal complexes, structural changes in the electronic excited state caused by the change from d 10 to d 9 configuration of the Cu center upon light absorption. This change in electronic structure brings about a so-called "pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion" in the excited state, which provides a fast channel for non-radiative deactivation, reducing excited state lifetimes and precluding its employment in applications. An important research question therefore is "Could light be absorbed, and an MLCT state formed, but the ensuing structural distortion be suppressed?" To answer this question, one needs to resolve excited state dynamics down to sub-40 fs, with atomic resolution, and, in the future, transfer the knowledge gained and the methods developed to in-operando studies. It has recently become possible to interrogate excited state structural dynamics on such short timescales, and in more detail than ever before, thanks to the recent advances in femtosecond optical spectroscopies and femtosecond X-ray spectroscopic and scattering techniques. This chapter will focus on the fascinating interplay between structural distortion in the excited state, solvent interactions, and intersystem crossing which determine the excited state landscape, with the use of the above methods. The two most distinct applications of copper complexes - as photosensitizers in water purification and as components in lighting devices operating via thermally-activated delayed fluorescence – will also be discussed.

Abstract:In this report we describe the synthesis of a new phenanthroline ligand, 2,9-di(2,4,6-tri-isopropyl-phenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (bL2) and its use as the blocking ligand in the preparation of two new heteroleptic Cu(i)diimine complexes. Analysis of the CuHETPHEN single crystal structures shows a distinct distortion from an ideal tetrahedral geometry around the Cu(i) center, forced by the secondary phenanthroline ligand rotating to accommodate the isopropyl groups of bL2. The increased steric bulk of bL2 as compared to the more commonly used 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline blocking ligand prohibits intramolecular ligand-ligand interaction, which is unique among CuHETPHEN complexes. The ground state optical and redox properties of CuHETPHEN complexes are responsive to the substitution on the blocking ligand even though the differences in structure are far removed from the Cu(i) center. Transient optical spectroscopy was used to understand the excited state kinetics in both coordinating and non-coordinating solvents following visible excitation. Substitution of the blocking phenanthroline ligand has a significant impact on the 3MLCT decay and can be used to increase the excited state lifetime by 50%. Electronic structure calculations established relationships between ground and excited state properties, and general entatic state concepts are discussed for copper photosensitizers. This work contributes to the growing library of CuHETPHEN complexes and broadens the fundamental understanding of their ground and excited state properties.

Abstract:The EIZ isomerization reaction is found extensively in most organic molecules containing double bond unit. This limits their practical application as luminescent materials partly, especially under photoirradiation. Therefore, it is important to obtain EIZ isomers with stable configuration in the excited state after photoirradiation. It is well known that cyanostilbene and its analogues play an important role in the development of organic opto/electronic materials. The substituted cyano group on C = C double bonds has strong electron-withdrawing ability and large steric hindrance, which benefits the formation of donor-acceptor (D-A) structures and formation of intramolecular charge transfer. In our previous work, we reported a triphenylamine-cyanostilbene molecule (TPNCF) formed by modifying the cyanostilbene structure with triphenylamine, which maintained a stable EIZ configuration as a film and in high polar solvents. According to solvatochromism mechanisms and the results of theoretical calculations, we proposed that the charge transfer (CT) excited state between the triphenylamine donor and cyanostilbene acceptor groups induced the stable configuration of the E- and Z- isomers under photoirradiation. Under irradiation, the EIZ isomerization process occurring at a higher energy locally excited (LE) state was suppressed by a rapid internal conversion process from the LE to CT state. This work inspired us to provide a universal and effective molecular design strategy by modifying D-A substituents on double bonds that can successfully stabilize EIZ isomers. To further confirm that the CT excited state induced stable E- and Z- isomers in the cyanostilbene structure under photoirradiation, we designed and synthesized a donor-acceptor phenoxazine-cyanostilbene molecule (PZNCF) and successfully characterized its two EIZ isomers. In comparison with the reported TPNCF molecule, the in-situ NMR and UV spectra of E- and Z- isomers of PZNCF demonstrated that the EIZ isomerization rate became slower under photoirradiation, which indicated that the stronger electron-donating group of phenoxazine substituted in the cyanostilbene structure induced a more stable EIZ isomer configuration in its excited state. DFT calculations and photophysical results indicated that a stronger CT state was generated in both E- and Z- isomers of PZNCF. This further confirmed our hypothesized mechanism where the stable EIZ configuration can be obtained under photoirradiation by forming a suitable donor-acceptor structure to suppress the EIZ isomerization reaction in the LE state by a rapid internal crossing process from the LE to CT state. This molecular design strategy is of great significance to organic photochemistry and photoelectronics for molecules with double bond units.

Abstract:It is a comprehensive study of photophysical behaviour of heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes with imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (imphen) as an ancillary ligand, represented by the general formula [Ir(N∩C)2(imphen)]PF6. As cyclometalating ligands, 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy), 2-phenylquinoline (Hpquin), 2-phenylbenzothiazole (Hpbztz), and 2-(2-pyridyl)benzothiophene (pybzthH) were used. The impact of structural modifications of cyclometalating ligands were widely explored by a combination of steady-state and time-resolved optical techniques in accompany with theoretical calculations. We evidenced that the cyclometalating ligand induces essential changes in the nature of the emissive excited state and emission characteristics of [Ir(N∩C)2(imphen)]PF6. While the complex [Ir(ppy)2(imphen)]PF6 (1) is a typical 3MLLCT emitter, the lowest triplet state of [Ir(pquin)2(imphen)]PF6 (2), [Ir(pbztz)2(imphen)]PF6 (3) and [Ir(pybzth)2(imphen)]PF6 (4) has the predominant 3LCN∩C character. The phosphorescence colour of investigated Ir(III) complexes changes from greenish-yellow to red, quantum yields vary from 56 to 2 %, and triplet excited-state lifetimes fall in the range 743–3840 ns. The highest photoluminescence quantum yield was revealed for 2 in CH2Cl2, while the complex 3 in MeCN shows the most pronounced increase in the lifetime. Both complexes 2 and 3 show an increased efficiency of the singlet oxygen generation. The discussed herein structure–property relationships are of high significance for controlling photoinduced processes in heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes with the imphen-based ancillary ligand, and making further progress in effective tuning the emission energy, quantum yields and excited-state lifetimes of these systems by structural modifications of cyclometalating ligands, especially the π-conjugation, position of the N-donor and presence of sulfur heteroatom.

Toward Improved Charge Separation through Conformational Control in Copper Coordination Complexes

Abstract:The continued development of solar energy as a renewable resource necessitates new approaches to sustaining photodriven charge separation (CS). We present a bioinspired approach in which photoinduced conformational rearrangements at a ligand are translated into changes in coordination geometry and environment about a bound metal ion. Taking advantage of the differential coordination properties of CuI and CuII, these dynamics aim to facilitate intramolecular electron transfer (ET) from CuI to the ligand to create a CS state. The synthesis and photophysical characterization of CuCl(dpaaR) (dpaa = dipicolylaminoacetophenone, with R = H and OMe) are presented. These ligands incorporate a fluorophore that gives rise to a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) excited state. Excited-state ligand twisting provides a tetragonal coordination geometry capable of capturing CuII when an internal ortho-OMe binding site is present. NMR, IR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and optical spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods establish the ground-state properties of these CuI and CuII complexes. The photophysical dynamics of the CuI complexes are explored by time-resolved photoluminescence and optical transient absorption spectroscopies. Relative to control complexes lacking a TICT-active ligand, the lifetimes of CS states are enhanced ∼1000-fold. Further, the presence of the ortho-OMe substituent greatly enhances the lifetime of the TICT* state and biases the coordination environment toward CuII. The presence of CuI decreases photoinduced degradation from 14 to <2% but does not result in significant quenching via ET. Factors affecting CS in these systems are discussed, laying the groundwork for our strategy toward solar energy conversion.
Heteroleptic Mononuclear Cu(I) Halide Complexes Containing Carbazolyl Substituted Phenyl Diphosphine and Monophosphine: Structures, Photophysical and Electroluminescent Properties

Abstract:How to obtain heteroleptic mononuclear Cu(I) halide complexes with high quantum efficiency and short decay lifetime remains a challenge. Here, seven mononuclear four-coordinate Cu(I) halide complexes [CuX(DCzDP)(PPh3)] (DCzDP = 1,2-bis(9-carbazolyl)-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene, X = Br (1), Cl (2)), [CuX(DCzDP)(CzP)] (CzP = 9-methyl-3-(diphenylphosphino)carbazole, X = I (3), Br (4), Cl (5)) and [CuX(DCzDP)(DCzP)] (DCzP = bis(9-methyl-3-carbazolyl)phenylphosphine, X = I (6), Br (7)), were synthesized and their structures and photophysical properties were characterized. At room temperature, complexes 1-7 in powder emit yellowish green to yellow green delayed fluorescence (λem = 531-560 nm, Φ = 0.34-0.75, τ = 1.8-2.9 μs). By replacing one phenyl group of PPh3 with 9-methyl-3-carbazolyl group, the PLQYs (photoluminescence quantum yields) of the complexes are effectively improved and the decay lifetimes are only around 2.0 μs. Among them, complex 4 displayed the highest PLQY (0.75) and short decay lifetime (1.9 μs). The radiative decay rate (kr) is 3.95 × 105 s-1, which is the highest value among the reported heteroleptic mononuclear Cu(I) halide complexes and comparable with that of Ir(III) complexes. Solution-processed organic light-emitting devices that contained complex 4 exhibit greenish yellow with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.56% and maximum luminance of 3364 cdm-2.

Abstract:Photoresponsive materials have recently garnered significant research interest and have been designed using various molecules. A viable approach to develop photoresponsive materials is by integrating photoisomeric structures into the organic ligands of phosphorescent transition metal complexes. In this study, we designed two photoresponsive cyclometalating ligands, 2-phenyl-3-vinylpyridine ( HL1 ) and trans -4-methyl-2-phenyl-3-styrylpyridine ( HL2 ), via the replacement of a phenyl group with a pyridyl group in vinylbiphenyl. Upon photoirradiation under an argon atmosphere, both ligands underwent photocyclization and demonstrated hypochromism and bathochromic shifts in absorption. Notably, HL2 underwent additional oxidative dehydrogenation upon photoirradiation in the presence of oxygen, resulting in an elongated conjugation structure that exhibited significant fluorescence intensity increase at 363 nm. Additionally, three photoresponsive iridium(III) complexes cyclometalated with HL1 or HL2 were synthesized and characterized. The photocyclization process of the complexes was much faster than that of the free ligands because the phenylpyridine moiety became coplanar upon cyclometalation. Upon photoirradiation under an argon atmosphere, these complexes exhibited significant luminescence enhancement by about 10–20 folds because of photocyclization resulting in a rigid closed structure that limited nonradiative decay of the excited complexes. These molecules present a unique strategy to construct photocyclization complexes and provide important insights into the development of photoresponsive materials.

It was hoped that in this way we might learn something about the special nature of the avocado fruit, in whose pericarp cell division is constantly occurring, even after attaining maturity.

Abstract:Luminescent copper(I) halide complexes with bi- and tridentate rigid ligands have gained wide research interests. In this paper, six tetracoordinate dinuclear copper(I) halide complexes, Cu2X2(ppda)2 [ppda = 2-[2-(dimethylamino)phenyl(phenyl)phosphino]-N,N-dimethylaniline, X = I (1), Br (2), Cl (3)] and Cu2X2(pfda)2 [pfda = 2-[2-(dimethylamino)-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl(phenyl)phosphino]-N,N-dimethyl-5-trifluoromethylaniline, X = I (4), Br (5), Cl (6)], were successfully prepared and systematically characterized on their structures and photophysical properties. Complexes 1–5 have a centrosymmetric form with a planar Cu2X2 unit, and complex 6 has a mirror symmetry form with a butterfly-shaped Cu2X2. Solid complexes 1, 4, and 5 emit delayed fluorescence at room temperature, intense blue to greenish yellow (λmax = 443–570 nm) light, and their peak wavelengths are located at 443–570 nm with microsecond lifetimes (τ = 0.4–19.2 μs, ΦPL = 0.05–0.48). Complexes 2, 3, and 6 show prompt fluorescence, very weak yellowish green to yellow (λmax = 534–595 nm) emission with peak wavelengths at 534–595 nm, and lifetimes in nanoseconds (τ = 4.4–9.3 ns, ΦPL < 0.0001). (Metal + halide) to ligand and intraligand charge transitions are the main origin of the emission of the complexes. Abstract:In the frame of our research aiming to develop efficient triplet-emitting materials, we are exploring the concept of introducing additional heavy atoms into cyclometalated transition metal complexes to enhance intersystem-crossing (ISC) and thus triplet emission through increased spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In an in-depth proof-of-principle study we investigated the double cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes [Pt(C^N^C)(PnPh3)] (HC^N^CH = 2,6-diphenyl-pyridine (H2dpp) or dibenzoacridine (H2dba); Pn = pnictogen atoms P, As, Sb, or Bi) through a combined experimental and theoretical approach. The derivatives containing Pn = P, As, and Sb were synthesised and characterised comprehensively using single crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD), UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Across the series P < As < Sb, a red-shift is observed concerning absorption and emission maxima as well as optical and electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps. Increased photoluminescence quantum yields ΦL and radiative rates kr from mixed metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT)/ligand centred (LC) triplet states are observed for the heavier homologues. Transient absorption spectroscopy showed processes in the ps range that were assigned to the population of the T1 state by ISC. The heavy PnPh3 ancillary ligands are found to enhance the emission efficiency due to both higher Pt-Pn bond strength and stronger SOC related to increased MLCT character of the excited states. The experimental findings are mirrored in hybrid (TD-)DFT calculations. This allowed for extrapolation to the rather elusive Bi derivatives, which were synthetically not accessible. This shortcoming is attributed to the transmetalation of phenyl groups from BiPh3 to Pt, as supported by experimental NMR/MS as well as DFT studies.

Abstract:We report on a temporal evolution of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of CuInS2/ZnS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) by drop-casting on SiO2/Si substrates and high quality factor microdisks (MDs) under different atmospheric conditions. Fast PL decay, peak blue shift, and line width broadening due to photooxidation have been observed at low excitation power. With further increasing of the excitation power, the PL peak position shows a red shift and the line width becomes narrow, which is ascribed to the enhanced FOrster resonant energy transfer between different QDs by photoinduced agglomeration. The oxygen plays an important role in optically induced PL decay, which is verified by a reduced photobleaching effect under vacuum. When the QDs are drop-tasted on MDs, photooxidation and photobleaching are accelerated because the excitation efficiency is greatly enhanced with coupling the pumping laser with the cavity modes. However, when the emitted photons couple with cavity modes, a PL enhancement by more than 20 times is achieved because of the increased extraction efficiency and Purcell effects of MDs at room temperature (RT) and 35 times at 20 K. The photobleaching can be avoided with a small excitation power but with a strong PL intensity by taking advantage of high quality factor cavities. The highly efficient PL emission without photodegradation is very promising for using CuInS2 QDs as highly efficient photon emitters at RT, where the photodegradation has always limited the practical applications of colloidal quantum dots.

Abstract:Purpose of reviewThis article reviews the features of cyclical hypercortisolism. This syndrome was once considered to be very rare but is now being increasingly recognized. Recent findingsEither true cycles or the variant of episodic and fluctuating levels of hypercortisolism can lead to considerable clinical dilemmas, which are discussed. The review details possible pathophysiological mechanisms and the effects of centrally acting drugs. SummaryCyclical Cushing's syndrome is a pattern of hypercortisolism in which the biochemistry of cortisol production fluctuates rhythmically. This syndrome is often associated with fluctuating symptoms and signs. This type of case was initially thought to be rare. It has, however, recently been recognized as occurring much more frequently. The phenomenon is important because it can, if not recognized, lead to errors in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the syndrome and in assessment of therapeutic outcomes. All of these can have very serious clinical consequences. Clinical researchers, including ourselves, have developed criteria, protocols and dynamic biochemical tools to detect cycling in patients with hypercortisolism. Unfortunately, the mechanisms causing the abnormal pathophysiology have not been well elucidated but some recent insights have been gained. The review discusses strategies for diagnosing and managing this important subgroup of patients with hypercortisolism.

Abstract:Excited states are the key species in photocatalysis, while the critical parameters that govern their applications are: i) excitation energy, ii) accessibility, and iii) lifetime. However, in molecular transition metal-based photosensitizers there is a design tension between the creation of long-lived excited (triplet), e.g., metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) states and the population of such states. Long-lived triplet states have low spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and hence their population is low. Thus, a long-lived triplet state can be populated but inefficiently. If the SOC is increased, the triplet state population efficiency is improved - coming at the cost of decreasing the lifetime. A promising strategy to isolate the triplet excited state away from the metal after intersystem crossing (ISC) involves the combination of the transition metal complex and an organic donor/acceptor group. Here we elucidate the excited-state branching processes in a series of Ru(II)-terpyridyl push-pull triads by means of quantum chemical simulations. Scalar-relativistic time-dependent density theory simulations reveal that efficient ISC takes place along 1/3MLCT-gateway states. Subsequently, competitive electron transfer pathways involving the organic chromophore, i.e., 10-methylphenothiazinyl and the terpyridyl ligands are available. The kinetics of the underlying electron transfer processes were investigated within the semi-classical Marcus picture. The electron transfer kinetics were described along efficient internal reaction coordinates that connect the respective photoredox intermediates. The key parameter that governs the population transfer away from the metal either towards the organic chromophore either by means of ligand-to-ligand (3LLCT; weakly coupled) or intra-ligand charge transfer (3ILCT; strongly coupled) states was determined to be the magnitude of the involved electronic coupling.

Abstract:Learning nature's approach to modulate photophysical properties of NIR porphyrinoids by fine-tuning β-substituents including the number and position, in a manner similar to naturally occurring chlorophylls, has the potential to circumvent the disadvantages of traditional "extended π-conjugation" strategy such as stability, molecular size, solubility, and undesirable π-π stacking. Here we show that such subtle structural changes in Pt(II) or Pd(II) cis/trans-porphodilactones (termed by cis/trans-Pt/Pd) influence photophysical properties of the lowest triplet excited states including phosphorescence, Stokes shifts, and even photosensitization ability in triplet-triplet annihilation reactions with rubrene. Prominently, the overall upconversion capability (η, η = ε·Φ(UC)) of Pd or Pt trans-complex is 10(4) times higher than that of cis-analogue. Nanosecond time-resolved infrared (TR-IR) spectroscopy experiments showed larger frequency shift of ν(C═O) bands (ca. 10 cm(-1)) of cis-complexes than those of trans-complexes in the triplet excited states. These spectral features, combining with TD-DFT calculations, suggest the strong electronic coupling between the lactone moieties and the main porphyrin chromophores and thus the importance of precisely positioning β-substituents by mimicking chlorophylls, as an alternative to "extended π-conjugation", in designing NIR active porphyrinoids.
