Abstract:Steam cracking of naphtha is an important process for the production of olefins. Applying artificial intelligence helps achieve high-frequency real-time optimization strategy and process control. This work employs an artificial neural network (ANN) model with two sub-networks to simulate the naphtha steam cracking process. In the first feedstock composition ANN, the detailed feedstock compositions are determined from the limited naphtha bulk properties. In the second reactor ANN, the cracking product yields are predicted from the feedstock compositions and operating conditions. The combination of these two sub-networks has the ability to accurately and rapidly predict the product yields directly from naphtha bulk properties. Two different feedstock composition ANN strategies are proposed and compared. The results show that with the special design of dividing the output layer into five groups of PIONA, the prediction accuracy of product yields is significantly improved. The mean absolute error of 11 cracking products is 0.53wt% for 472 test sets. The comparison results show that this indirect feedstock composition ANN has lower product prediction errors, not just the reduction of the total error of the feedstock composition. The critical factor is ensuring that PIONA contents are equal to the actual values. The use of an indirect feedstock composition strategy is a means that can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of the whole ANN model.

Abstract:The usability of artificial neural networks (ANN) for the estimation of the product distributions was investigated. The study was performed by following a model catalysis reaction, benzene alkylation with propylene on zeolite MCM-22. The effects of temperature, the ratio of benzene/propylene (B/P) and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on the product distributions were studied. Data obtained from different courses were used for training of the ANN and one set of data obtained from another courses was used for testing of the trained network. This network was designed as a Back-Propagation (BP) network with four neurons in the input layer, N neurons in the hidden layer and one neuron in the output layer. The network was trained till the mean square value between the targets and the outputs obtained was 1×10-4. The product distributions for the isopropylbenzene, di-isopropylbenzene and tri-isopropylbenzene were estimated using the trained network. The regression coefficient of determination showed a good correlation between estimated and experimental data sets for both train and test data sets. There are high correlations between experimental and estimated time course curves and that was another proof of the high performance of ANN for estimation of the product distributions of alkylation reaction.

Abstract:In this study, artificial neural networks were applied for predicting the surface tension of binary mixtures containing ionic liquids using σ‐profile descriptors. In order to evaluate the predicting performance and validate the model several statistical metrics have been used. The model of this work showed better predicting performance than literature models of pervious works. Ionic liquids (IL) are a new class of liquids considered as green solvents; less toxic, less flammable, and less polluting which retain their liquid state over wide temperature ranges and are considered alternatives to volatile organic solvents. The surface tension of IL‐organic solvent mixtures plays an important role in the design and development of many industrial processes. This work investigated the capability and feasibility of four ANN model topologies ("trainbr, logsig"; "trainbr, tansig"; "trainlm, logsig"; "trainlm, tansig"), a PSO‐SVM model, and an LSSVM model to predict the surface tension of binary systems containing IL. For this purpose, 1623 data points corresponding to the experimental surface tension values of binary mixtures containing IL were collected from the literature. The surface tension values were between 18.9 and 72.7 mN m−1. The temperature, the composition in mole fraction of IL (XIL), descriptors based on the sigma profiles, relating to the H‐bond donor and to the H‐bond acceptor character, the anion, the cation and the solvent were used as input variables of the model in order to differentiate the different compounds involved in the binary systems. A comparison of the experimental and the predicted values in terms of several statistical metrics showed good agreement, however, the prediction (trainbr, logsig) was better than the other approaches with an overall average absolute relative deviation of .8466% and a mean square error of .4952. These results are very encouraging for future projects modeling other physical and chemical properties of ILs.

Abstract:Reliable estimation of melt index (MI) is crucial for the production of polypropylene. Propylene polymerization process is highly nonlinear and characterized by multi-scale nature with lots of variables and information that are highly correlated and derived at different sample rates from different sensors. A novel soft-sensor architecture based on radial basis function networks (RBF) combining independent component analysis (ICA) as well as multi-scale analysis (MSA) is proposed to infer the MI of polypropylene from other process variables. In the proposed model, ICA is carried out to select the most independent process features and to eliminate the correlations of the input variables, MSA is introduced to acquire approximate and detailed scale information of the process and make the model more robust to mismatches, and RBF networks are used to characterize the nonlinearity in every scale. The approach is evaluated and the results are compared with simplified approaches built with the same data set. The research results confirm the validity of the proposed model.
Prediction of Soil-Water Characteristic Curve Using Artificial Neural Network Approach

Abstract:In pavement ME design, the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is used to estimate the resilient modulus of unbound material at different saturation conditions based on the enhanced integrated climatic model (EICM). The Fredlund-Xing equation is employed to generate the SWCC and the fitting parameters of the equation are correlated to the soil physical properties using regression models. However, the prediction accuracy of this method needs to be improved. To solve this problem, this study employs an artificial neural network (ANN) approach to improve the prediction accuracy of the SWCC fitting parameters. A new set of SWCC-related soil physical properties are selected to predict the SWCC. A large number of soil datasets collected from the NCHRP 9-23A project are used to develop the ANN models. The developed ANN models of the SWCC fitting parameters are used to predict the suction-water content relationship. The R-2 values were found to be 0.9 and 0.95 for predicting the SWCC curves of plastic and non-plastic soils respectively, which are significantly higher than existing correlation models. The prediction accuracy of the developed ANN models are validated by comparing the measured and predicted matric suction of new soils datasets that are not used to train the ANN models.

Abstract:Abstract The field of thermal engineering is undergoing a transformative revolution through the application of artificial intelligence (AI). In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) with a genetic algorithm is employed as a powerful tool to accurately predict the thermophysical properties of nano-encapsulated phase change material (NEPCM) suspensions. The NEPCM consists of water as the base fluid, with the shell and core materials represented by sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and n-eicosane, respectively. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the ANN model in successfully predicting dynamic viscosity, density, and shear stress using only two input parameters. However, it is worth noting that the model exhibits slightly weaker performance in predicting thermal conductivity. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge in AI-assisted thermal engineering and highlight the potential for enhanced prediction of NEPCM properties. Future research should focus on improving the accuracy of thermal conductivity predictions and exploring additional input parameters to further enhance the model's performance.

Abstract:Surface tension is an important thermodynamic property of fluids that impact several processes in the engineering. Accurate estimations of this parameter are required to correctly apply and develop operations such as flow processes and oil recovery. The present study proposes the applying of artificial neural network (ANN)-based approach to accurately predict the surface tension for 75 groups of pure organic compounds, encompassing 1,666 different compounds and 21,444 data points. The performance of the model was evaluated using the mean squared error (MSE) and the coefficient of determination (R 2 ), with K-Fold cross-validation ensuring robustness. The optimal model (ArcD) achieved an average MSE of 8.27x10 −5 during cross-validation and 1.55x10 −5 during training, with an R 2 value of 0.9955. Although training time for this model was 8.89 times longer than the second-best model (ArcA), which had an R 2 of 0.9928. Comparative analyses with existing literature models were also realized and revealed an absolute relative deviation (ARD) value of 2.49% to ArcD, 18.39% to Brock and Bird, 23.97% to Curl and Pitzer, and 18.62% to Zuo and Stenby equations, demonstrating the applicability and precision of the developed model. The results highlighted the reliability, accuracy and robustness of the developed ANN-based model, providing a significant advancement in the prediction of surface tension for a wide range of pure organic compounds.

Application of machine learning techniques to the modeling of solubility of sugar alcohols in ionic liquids

Abstract:The current trend of chemical industries demands green processing, in particular with employing natural substances such as sugar-derived compounds. This matter has encouraged academic and industrial sections to seek new alternatives for extracting these materials. Ionic liquids (ILs) are currently paving the way for efficient extraction processes. To this end, accurate estimation of solubility data is of great importance. This study relies on machine learning methods for modeling the solubility data of sugar alcohols (SAs) in ILs. An initial relevancy analysis approved that the SA-IL equilibrium governs by the temperature, density and molecular weight of ILs, as well as the molecular weight, fusion temperature, and fusion enthalpy of SAs. Also, temperature and fusion temperature have the strongest influence on the SAs solubility in ILs. The performance of artificial neural networks (ANNs), least-squares support vector regression (LSSVR), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) to predict SA solubility in ILs were compared utilizing a large databank (647 data points of 19 SAs and 21 ILs). Among the investigated models, ANFIS offered the best accuracy with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD%) of 7.43% and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.98359. The best performance of the ANFIS model was obtained with a cluster center radius of 0.435 when trained with 85% of the databank. Further analyses of the ANFIS model based on the leverage method revealed that this model is reliable enough due to its high level of coverage and wide range of applicability. Accordingly, this model can be effectively utilized in modeling the solubilities of SAs in ILs.

Abstract:This research aims to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the specific heat capacity (SHC) of graphene/SAE10W oil nanofluid. An experimental investigation of the SHC of graphene nanoplatelets infused in SAE10W oil was carried out using a thermal constant analyzer. In experimental testing the volume percentage and fluid temperature range vary from 0.05 to 0.15 and 293 K to 353 K, respectively. The experimental data shows the graphene/SAE10W oil nanofluid exhibited a reduction in SHC relative to the base fluid. The ANN model was developed using experimental data to predict the specific heat capacity of graphene/SAE10W oil nanofluid. During ANN model training, the correlation coefficient and mean square error of 0.999 and 6.592 × 10 –6 were achieved, respectively. Compared to experimental values, the ANN model predicts SHC with a 0.45 error percentage. Additionally, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the SHC of graphene/SAE10W oil nanofluids using curve fitting. The data obtained from the developed mathematical model showed excellent correlation with all experimental values, with an error percentage of ±0.42. Hence, it is concluded that both models provide an optimal approach for estimating their SHC.

Abstract:Accurate prediction models for the viscosity and thermal conductivity of refrigerants are of great importance and have drawn wide attention from scholars. Considering the great advantage of artificial neural network (ANN) models in solving non-linear problems, two fully connected feed-forward ANN models were proposed to predict the viscosity and thermal conductivity of the HFC/HFO refrigerants in this paper. The reduced pressure (pr), reduced temperature (Tr), mole mass (M) and acentric factor (ω) of the refrigerants were selected as the input variables for both ANN models. Regarding the ANN model for viscosity, the neural number of the hidden layer was optimized to be 9 by trial-and-error method. The prediction results coincided with the experimental data very well. The correlation coefficient and the average absolute deviation (AAD) of regression were 0.9998 and 1.21 %, respectively. The prediction of thermal conductivity also showed a good agreement with the experimental data, and the AAD of the model was 1.00 %. The paper is expected to provide valuable methods to predict the viscosity and thermal conductivity of HFC/HFO refrigerants.

Abstract:Artificial neural network (ANN) is the widely used technique for prediction and modeling of complex processes. In this study, ANN was applied for predicting the complex pyrolysis behaviour by employing critical process parameters like heating rate (°C/min) and temperature (°C). Two anticipated variables in input layer were used to predict the derivative weight loss (%/°C) by propagating in twelve neurons. The model's reliability and adequacy were validated by the best training performance data recorded at 36 training epochs with an MSE value of 2.34 × 10 −5 . In order to estimate the thermo-kinetics of the Pigeon pea stalks (PPS), thermogravimetric analysis was done at four heating rates (10–40 °C/min). The TG-spectra were resolved into their pseudo components using deconvolution technique. The activation energy and pre-exponential factor were estimated by Friedman isoconversional method. In continuation, response surface method (RSM) was employed to explore the effect of process parameter on thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS. The recorded statistical values illustrated the adequacy and robustness of the fitted model with anticipated variables. Pyrolytic reaction order was also determined for each pseudo components through master plot method.

Abstract:The transition from batch to continuous production in the catalytic hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) into hydrogenated NBR (HNBR) marks a significant advance for applications under demanding conditions. This study introduces a continuous process utilizing a static mixer (SM) reactor, which notably achieves a hydrogenation conversion rate exceeding 97%. We thoroughly review a mechanistic model of the SM reactor to elucidate the internal dynamics governing the hydrogenation process and address the inherent uncertainties in key parameters such as the Peclet number (Pe), dimensionless time (θτ), reaction coefficient (R), and flow rate coefficient (q). A comprehensive dataset generated from varied parameter values serves as the basis for training an artificial neural network (ANN), which is then compared against traditional models including linear regression, decision tree, and random forest in terms of efficacy. Our results clearly demonstrate the ANN's superiority in predicting the degree of hydrogenation, achieving the lowest root mean squared error (RMSE) of 3.69 compared to 21.90 for linear regression, 4.94 for decision tree, and 7.51 for random forest. The ANN's robust capability for modeling complex nonlinear relationships and dynamics significantly enhances decision-making, planning, and optimization of the reactor, reducing computational demands and operational costs. In other words, this approach allows users to rely on a single ML-based model instead of multiple mechanistic models for reflecting the effects of possible uncertainties. Additionally, a feature importance study validates the critical impact of time and element number on the hydrogenation process, further supporting the ANN's predictive accuracy. These findings underscore the potential of ML-based models in streamlining and enhancing the efficiency of chemical production processes.

Abstract:An artificial neural network model of a continuous stirred ultrafiltration process, is proposed in the present study, which is able to predict permeate volumetric flux and permeate concentration at different bulk concentration, stirrer speed, pressure and time. Because of the complexity in generalization of the phenomenon of ultrafiltration by any mathematical model, the neural network proves to be a very promising method for the purpose of process simulation. The network uses the Backpropagation Algorithm for evaluating the connection strengths, representing the correlations between inputs (bulk concentration, stirrer speed, pressure and time) and output (permeate concentration and flux). The network employed in the present study uses four input nodes corresponding to the operating variables, and two output nodes corresponding to the measurement of the performance of the network (flux and permeate concentration). Experiments were performed to constitute the learning databases for the continuous stirred ultrafiltration process using PEG-6000 solute, and cellulose acetate membrane of 5000 MWCO. The network employed in the present study uses two hidden layers, with the optimum number of nodes being thirty and twenty. A leaning rate of 0.3, and momentum factor of 0.4 was used. The results predicted by the model were in good agreement with the experimental data, and the average deviations for all the cases are found to be well within ±10 %.

Abstract:Being a new generation of green solvents and high-tech reaction media of the future, ionic liquids have increasingly attracted much attention. Of particular interest in this context are room temperature ionic liquids (in short as ILs in this paper). Due to the relatively high viscosity, ILs is expected to be used in the form of solvent diluted mixture with reduced viscosity in industrial application, where predicting the viscosity of IL mixture has been an important research issue. Different IL mixture and many modelling approaches have been investigated. The objective of this study is to provide an alternative model approach using soft computing technique, i.e., artificial neural network (ANN) model, to predict the compositional viscosity of binary mixtures of ILs [C n -mim][NTf2] with n=4, 6, 8, 10 in methanol and ethanol over the entire range of molar fraction at a broad range of temperatures from T=293.0-328.0K. The results show that the proposed ANN model provides alternative way to predict compositional viscosity successfully with highly improved accuracy and also show its potential to be extensively utilized to predict compositional viscosity taking account of IL alkyl chain length, as well as temperature and compositions simultaneously, i.e., more complex intermolecular interactions between components in which it would be hard or impossible to establish the analytical model. This illustrates the potential application of ANN in the case that the physical and thermodynamic properties are highly non-linear or too complex.

Abstract:Liquid Dialkylesters of adipic acid (adipates) have achieved prominence as alternative green solvents due to their special properties. To enhance their utilization, accurate thermophysical property data are required, especially for extended pressure ranges. This study presents the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for predicting the densities and viscosities of liquid adipates over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. A substantial dataset, including 1145 viscosity and 891 density data points, was utilized across a broad range of temperature and pressure conditions. The dataset used for densities includes data for six different liquid adipates and covers a temperature range of 293.15–403.15 K and pressures up to 140 MPa, while the dataset used for viscosities encompasses data for four different liquid adipates, ranging from 293.15 K to 403.15 K in temperature and up to 65.62 MPa in pressure. Two ANN models were developed and fine-tuned, with two separate models created to predict the properties of liquid adipates. These models exhibited very good performance, achieving an Average Absolute Relative Deviation (AARD) of 0.028 % for density and 0.400 % for viscosity. The results from the ANN models were compared with semi-empirical models based on the equation of state and rough hard-sphere theory, showcasing the technique's potential as a powerful tool for characterizing thermophysical properties As part of enhancing model reliability and robustness, various tests were conducted to validate the chosen model.

Abstract:A novel model of an artificial neural network ( ANN ) is proposed in order to predict the thermal performance of Al 2 O 3 /water nanofluid in conically coiled tubes ( CCT s). Experiments were conducted at volume concentrations of 0.3 %, 0.6 %, and 0.9 % of Al 2 O 3 /water nanofluid and coil torsions ranging from 0.02 to 0.052. Feed-forward neural network ( FFNN ) have been modelled and trained in order to predict the experimental and non-experimental Nusselt number ( Nu ) and. friction factor (ƒ). Using the TRAINLM algorithm, the FFNN for predicting Nu and ƒ is well-trained, with correlation coefficients of 0.9952 and 0.9482, respectively. FFNN exhibited greater accuracy in predicting the Nu and friction factor, since the Root mean square error ( RMSE ) between experimental and predicted data was minimal. The average RMSE, and Mean absolute percentage error ( MAPE ) were 9.6166 and 3.101 for the predicted Nusselt number. The predicted results of the ANN for the average Nusselt number and friction factor at φ = 0.8 % align well with the experimental data, even though they have not yet been empirically validated. These findings demonstrate the capability of ANN s to accurately predict the Nusselt number and friction factor and yield satisfactory outcomes.

Abstract:The applications of the artificial neural network (ANN) have become the focus of interest of researchers due to their convenience for accurate modeling, simulation, and efficiency of evaluation. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of heat and mass transfer of the ternary hybrid nanofluid flow (THNF), which is squeezed between two parallel plates, using ANN. The plate which lies on x-axis is stretching while the upper plate (UP) can move in upward and downward direction. An inclined magnetic field (MF) is also applied to the lower plate (LP). A system of partial differential equations of flow, energy, and mass transfer is used to simulate the THNF, which is then condensed using similarity substitution to a collection of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Using the differential transform method (DTM), the resultant nonlinear ODEs in dimensionless form are further solved. The influence of the different varying physical parameters on velocity, temperature, and concentration is graphically presented and discussed. It becomes apparent that the velocity, heat, and mass transfer in squeezing flows are significantly impacted by the inclination angle of the applied MF. To demonstrate the validity of the study, the numerical findings of the Nusselt and the Sherwood numbers are provided. For the accuracy of the used approach, DTM results are compared with results from the numerical approach. The novelty of the current work is to train the neural network with the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm in the model. To get the estimated output of the model, different scenarios are set for training, testing, and validation. The analysis is done by mean square error (MSE), histogram, fitness curve, and regression (RG). The created ANN model is shown to be reliable due to its exceptional accuracy throughout the training, validation, and testing stages.

Abstract:In this study, to have an accurate approximation of dynamic viscosity, radial basis function artificial neural network (RBF-ANN) is employed and developed for normal alkanes. This is done by considering the distinct number of carbons in n-alkanes, certain temperatures, and different pressures. Moreover, in order to train and test the predicting model, a databank of 228 experimental data is gathered from reliable sources in the literature. As a result, training and testing coefficient values are measured 0.99739 and 0.99051; consequently, the robustness and accuracy of RBF-ANN in providing an estimation of n-alkane viscosity is confirmed by graphical analysis and determined indexes.

Abstract:Critical micellar concentration (CMC) is a key physicochemical property of surfactants used to study their behaviour. This property is affected by factors such as temperature, pressure, pH, the type of organic solvent/water mixture, the chemical structure of the surfactants and the presence of electrolytes. Most of the existing studies in the literature have predicted the CMC under fixed conditions based on the chemical parameters of the surfactant. In this study, a machine learning approach using artificial neural network (ANN) models was used to estimate the CMC of some ionic surfactants. These models considered variables defining both the organic solvent-water mixture (T, molecular weight, molar fraction and log P) and the chemical structure of the surfactant (number of atoms of each element). A database consisting of a total of 258 CMC values for 10 ionic surfactants was collected from the literature. The ANN architecture consisting of an input layer with 12 neurons, an intermediate layer with 25 neurons and one neuron in the output layer is proposed. According to the results, the normalized ANN models provided the best statistical adjustments for the CMC prediction. These ANN models could be a promising method for CMC estimation.

Abstract:Desiccant air conditioning systems are considered as better alternatives to the conventional air conditioning system because of the independent control of temperature and humidity and being environment friendly. An artificial neural network (ANN) model has been developed to predict the performance of a rotary desiccant dehumidifier for different process air inlet conditions. Dry bulb temperature, humidity ratio and flow rate of the process as well as regeneration air streams of dehumidifier and regeneration temperatures are used as inputs to the model. The outputs of the model are outlet dry bulb temperature and humidity ratio of process as well as regeneration air streams of dehumidifier, the moisture removal rate and the effectiveness of the dehumidifier. Moisture removal rate and effectiveness of the dehumidifier are considered as the performance indicators of the system. Experiments are also conducted to investigate the performance of the desiccant wheel and the test results are used as target data to train the ANN model. Performance predictions through ANN are compared with the experimental test results and a close agreement is observed.
