Abstract:Properly understanding the fundamental interactions between engineered nanoparticles (NPs) and plants is crucial for nano-enabled agriculture. In this study, Fe and Fe3O4 (magnetite), which are naturally occurred nanosized crystals and minerals, were foliar applied to 4-week-old maize plants for 10 days to evaluate their impact on plant photosynthesis and growth. Hill reaction of isolated maize leaf chloroplasts was carried out to determine the performance of two Fe-based NPs on photosynthetic activities at cell level. Meanwhile, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based metabolomics was used to explore the deep insight into the interaction between Fe-based NPs and maize plants. Results showed that maize leaf net photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll content were significantly increased by Fe NPs for 19.9% and 19.3%; and Fe3O4 NPs for 27.5% and 26.1%, respectively. Accordingly, plant biomass has been significantly increased by Fe and Fe3O4 NPs by 31.8% and 34.6%, respectively. Metabolomics revealed that both Fe-based NPs induced metabolic reprogramming in maize leaves. The biosynthesis of some compatible solutes and antioxidant compounds were inhibited. In addition, exposure to Fe-based NPs tentatively shut down some energy consuming pathways, such as photorespiration, alanine metabolism, branch chainamino acid biosynthesis. The trade-off of energy consuming pathways might be alternative explanation for the enhanced photosynthesis. The results of this study exhibited the promising potential for Fe-based NPs to be used in nano-enabled agriculture to promote plant growth. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Uptake, translocation and physiological effects of magnetic iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles in corn (Zea mays L.)

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3 NPs) have emerged as an innovative and promising method of iron application in agricultural systems. However, the possible toxicity of γ-Fe2O3 NPs and its uptake and translocation require further study prior to large-scale field application. In this study, we investigated uptake and distribution of γ-Fe2O3 NPs in corn (Zea mays L.) and its impacts on seed germination, antioxidant enzyme activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and chlorophyll content were determined. 20 mg/L of γ-Fe2O3 NPs significantly promoted root elongation by 11.5%, and increased germination index and vigor index by 27.2% and 39.6%, respectively. However, 50 and 100 mg/L γ-Fe2O3 NPs remarkably decreased root length by 13.5% and 12.5%, respectively. Additionally, evidence for γ-Fe2O3 NPs induced oxidative stress was exclusively found in the root. Exposures of different concentrations of NPs induced notably high levels of MDA in corn roots, and the MDA levels of corn roots treated by γ-Fe2O3 NPs (20-100 mg/L) were 5-7-fold higher than that observed in the control plants. Meanwhile, the chlorophyll contents were decreased by 11.6%, 39.9% and 19.6%, respectively, upon NPs treatment relative to the control group. Images from fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that γ-Fe2O3 NPs could enter plant roots and migrate apoplastically from the epidermis to the endodermis and accumulate the vacuole. Furthermore, we found that NPs mostly existed around the epidermis of root and no translocation of NPs from roots to shoots was observed. Our results will be highly meaningful on understanding the fate and physiological effects of γ-Fe2O3 NPs in plants.
Characterization of Root and Foliar-Applied Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Bulk Fe3O4) in Improving Maize (Zea mays L.) Performance

Abstract:Iron (Fe) oxide nanoparticles (NPs) improve crop growth. However, the comparative effect of root and foliar-applied different sources of Fe oxide NPs on plant performance at morphological and physiological levels still needs to be discovered. In this study, we characterized the growth and physiological responses of hydroponic-cultured maize seedlings to four sources of Fe (i.e., α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 NPs, and bulk Fe3O4) and two application methods (root vs. foliar). Results showed that Fe concentration in root and shoot increased by elevating the level of NPs from 100 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1. Overall, the responses of maize seedlings to different sources of Fe oxide NPs were as follows: Fe3O4 > γ-Fe2O3 > α-Fe2O3 > bulk Fe3O4. The application of Fe at concentrations ranging from 100 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1 had no significant effects on various growth parameters of maize, including biomass, chlorophyll content, and root length. Iron oxide NPs increased the plant biomass by 23-37% by root application, whereas it was 5-9% by foliar application. Chlorophyll contents were increased by 29-34% and 18-22% by foliar and root applications, respectively. The non-significant response of reactive oxygen species (i.e., superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase) suggested optimum maize performance for supplementing Fe oxide NPs. A confocal laser scanning microscope suggested that Fe oxide NPs entered through the epidermis and from the cortex to the endodermis. Our results provide a scientific basis that the root application of Fe3O4 at the rate of 100 mg L-1 is a promising approach to obtain higher maize performance and reduce the quantity of fertilizer used in agriculture to minimize environmental effects while improving crop productivity and quality. These findings demonstrated the tremendous potential of Fe NPs as an environmentally friendly and sustainable crop approach.
Bioavailability and Translocation of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in the Soil-Rice Plant System.

Abstract:To determine the bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) in the soil-rice plant system, we examined the accumulation and micro-distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg) in the paddy soil and rice plants under flooded condition for 30 days using single-step chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique combined with micro Xray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu-XRF). The results show that various MONPs changed the soil properties, especially the redox potential was enhanced to -165.33 to -75.33 mV compared to the control. The extraction efficiency of Zn, Cu and Ce in the paddy soil from high to low was EDTA, DTPA CaCl2 and DGT. Moreover, exposure to 500 mg/kg CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs induced the primary accumulation of Cu and Ce elements in rice roots as high as 235.48 mg Cu/kg and 164.84 mg Ce/kg, respectively, while the Zn concentration in shoots was up to 313.18 mg/kg under highest ZnO NPs with a 1.5 of translocation factor. The effect of MONPs on the plant growth was mainly related to the chemical species and solubility of MONPs. Micro-XRF analysis shows that Zn was mostly located in the root cortex while Cu was primarily accumulated in the root exodermis and few Ce distributed in the root. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate that only DTPA-extracted metals in soil were significantly and well correlated to the Zn, Cu and Ce accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to MONPs. Physiological and metabolic responses of maize (Zea mays) plants to Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), as representative magnetic materials, have been widely used in the industrial and biomedical sectors, and their environmental impacts must be evaluated for their sustainable use. In this study, the interactions between Fe3O4 NPs and maize plants were investigated by a combination of phenotypic and metabolic approaches. Maize plants (Zea mays) were grown in soil treated with Fe3O4 NPs at 0, 50 and 500 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Fe3O4 NPs had no impact on plant biomass or photosynthesis. However, root length of maize plant significantly increased, with decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) level, indicating the positive effects on root development and membrane integrity. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) revealed that Fe3O4 NPs resulted in a significant Fe accumulation in roots, instead of leaves. In addition, 500 mg/kg Fe3O4 NPs significantly promoted dehydrogenase enzyme activity by 84.9%. Metabolomics revealed that maize root metabolomes were re-programmed by Fe3O4 NPs exposure. Metabolic pathways associated with antioxidant and defence were inactivated by Fe3O4 NPs, indicating the protective role of Fe3O4 NPs for microbes and plant roots. Taken together, the results indicate a limited impact of environmental Fe3O4 NPs on plant growth. Taken together, the results of this study offer new insights into the molecular mechanisms by which maize responds to Fe3O4 NP exposure.

Abstract:Metal dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) are produced in ever-increasing amounts and widely used in industrial, medical and consumer products. They may pose potential risks to the environment. In this study we quantitatively evaluated the phytoavailability of CeO2NPs, ZrO2NPs and SiO2NPs to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Metal dioxide NPs showed distinct differences in uptake, with uptake rate constants of 90.2 ± 9.9, 12.2 ± 2.5, 0.4 ± 0.02 and 0.9 ± 0.1 L kg−1 h−1 for ZrO2NPs, CeO2NPs, SiO2NPs (13 nm) and SiO2NPs (25 nm), respectively. However, such difference cannot be generalized by single factor of NP characteristics and/or root damage. This study provides fundamental information for NP uptake by crop plants.
"Comfortably, Safely, and Without Shame: Defining Menstrual Hygiene Management as a Public Health Issue

Abstract:In July 2015, Marni Sommer and colleagues published "Comfortably, Safely, and Without Shame: Defining Menstrual Hygiene Management as a Public Health Issue," hereafter "Defining MHM," in American Journal of Public Health . The authors discuss that growing interest in the gender gap in education raised awareness about girls’ obstacles to managing menstruation [5] , especially in low-income countries. Increased focus on MHM pushed menstruation [5] to be redefined as a public issue rather than a private one. That transition made MHM the responsibility of national governments instead of just the responsibility of young girls, because it became more widely recognized that girls could only appropriately manage menstruation [5] if they had access to the necessary resources through public infrastructure. "Defining MHM" outlines how defining MHM as a public health issue brought much-needed attention to the obstacles to MHM young girls face and emphasizes that other underrepresented public health issues could use similar tactics as the MHM movement to gain global attention and funding. Menstruation, also called a period, is a process in which endometrial tissue, or tissue lining the inside of the uterus [6] , and blood are expelled from the uterus [6] through the vagina [7] every twenty-eight days, though every twenty-one to forty days is also normal. Menstrual hygiene management, or MHM, is especially important for menstruation [5] . Abstract:The use of nano-chemicals in agriculture has been shown to enhance crop production through soil additions or foliar sprays. However, the accumulation pattern, translocation efficiency, mode of action of nanomaterials (NMs) via different application methods remain unclear. In this study, wheat was treated with CuO-NPs/CeO 2 -NPs (50 and 100 nm) for 21 days using soil and foliar application separately. Foliar spray resulted in higher accumulation and more efficient translocation of NMs compared to soil addition. Smaller NMs exhibited higher accumulation and transfer capabilities under the same application method. The accumulation of CuO-NPs was approximately 20 times greater than that of CeO 2 -NPs, particularly under the soil addition treatment. Scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that NMs could directly enter wheat leaves via stomata during foliar application. Wheat growth was inhibited by roughly 15 % following CuO-NPs exposure, whereas no significant effects on growth were observed with CeO 2 -NPs. By integrating nontargeted metabolomics analysis with targeted physiological characteristics assessments, it was revealed that CuO-NPs mainly disturbed nitrogen metabolism pathways and induced oxidative damage. In contrast, CeO 2 -NPs enhanced carbohydrates related biological processes such as starch and sucrose metabolism, glycolysis, and TCA cycle, which are crucial for carbon metabolism. These findings suggest that the type of nanomaterial is a crucial factor to consider when evaluating their foliar or soil application in agriculture.

Abstract:Agricultural soil is gradually becoming a primary sink for metal -based nanoparticles (MNPs). The uptake and accumulation of MNPs by crops may contaminate food chain and pose unexpected risks for human health. Here, we investigated the fate and transformation of CuO nano particles (NPs) in the soil -rice system during the rice lifecycle. The results show that at the maturation stage, 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs significantly decreased redox potential by 202.75 triV but enhanced electrical conductivity by 497.07 mS/cm compared to controls. Moreover, the bioavailability of highest CuO NPs in the soil was reduced by 69.84% along with the plant growth but then was significantly increased' y 165% after drying -wetting cycles. Meanwhile, CuO and Cu coMbined with humic acid were transformed to Cu2S and Cu associated with goethite by X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. AdditiOnally, CuO NPs had an acute negative effect on the plant growth than bulk particles, which dramatically reduced the fresh weight of grains to 6.51% of controls. Notably, CuO NPs were found to be translocated from soil to plant especially to the chaff and promoted the Cu accumulation in the aleurone layer of rice using micro X-ray fluorescence technique, but could not reach the polished rice.
Proteomic Analysis Unravels Response and Antioxidation Defense Mechanism of Rice Plants to Copper Oxide Nanoparticles: Comparison with Bulk Particles and Dissolved Cu Ions

Abstract:The increasing application of nanomaterials in agriculture raises environmental risks, but the information on how nanomaterials impact plant proteins is still limited. Here, we exposed the roots of rice seedlings to CuO nanoparticles (NPs, 100 mg/L), CuO bulk particles (BPs, 100 mg/L), and dissolved Cu ions (0.5 mg/L) for 14 days. The results show that CuO NPs caused more Cu accumulation, higher ascorbate peroxidase activity, and a higher ratio of GSH and GSSG but lower activity of Mn-SOD than BPs and Cu ions. Isotopic multilabel relative quantitative proteomics results indicate that NPs induced double differentially expressed proteins compared to BPs and Cu ions, especially phosphoglycerate kinase (fold change (FC) > 10) and glycosyltransferase (FC < 0.1). Unlike BPs and Cu ions, the proteins that responded to NPs were primarily connected with the C2 domain and glutathione S-transferase and significantly enriched for drug metabolism and monovalent inorganic cation transport processes and oxidative phosphorylation and phagosome pathways. Furthermore, almost 20% of proteins in the protein-protein interaction belonged to the ribosomal protein family. The parallel reaction monitoring further proved the defense response to NPs involving in redox, signal transduction, and heavy metal detoxification. Thus, proteomic analysis suggests that CuO NPs caused higher phytotoxicity mainly due to the nanospecific effect but elevated cysteine synthesis and GSSG reduction for detoxification.
Assessment of the Phytotoxicity of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles on Two Crop Plants, Maize (zea Mays L.) and Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract:In this study, the phytotoxicity of seven metal oxide nanoparticles(NPs)—titanium dioxide (nTiO2), silicon dioxide (nSiO2), cerium dioxide (nCeO2), magnetite (nFe3O4), aluminum oxide (nAl2O3), zinc oxide (nZnO) and copper oxide (nCuO)—was assessed on two agriculturally significant crop plants (maize and rice). The results showed that seed germination was not affected by any of the seven metal oxide NPs. However, at the concentration of 2000 mg·L−1, the root elongation was significantly inhibited by nCuO (95.73% for maize and 97.28% for rice), nZnO (50.45% for maize and 66.75% for rice). On the contrary, minor phytotoxicity of nAl2O3 was only observed in maize, and no obvious toxic effects were found in the other four metal oxide NPs. By further study we found that the phytotoxic effects of nZnO, nAl2O3 and nCuO (25 to 2000 mg·L−1) were concentration dependent, and were not caused by the corresponding Cu2+, Zn2+ and Al3+ ions (0.11 mg·L−1, 1.27 mg·L−1 and 0.74 mg·L−1, respectively). Furthermore, ZnO NPs (<50 nm) showed greater toxicity than ZnO microparticles(MPs)(<5 μm) to root elongation of both maize and rice. Overall, this study provided valuable information for the application of engineered NPs in agriculture and the assessment of the potential environmental risks.

Abstract:The interactions between α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and Citrus maxima seedlings were examined so as to better understand possible particle applications as an Fe source for crop plants. NPs toxicity to the exposed plant was investigated as well. The α- and γ-Fe2O3 NPs were accumulated by plant root cells through diapirism and endocytosis, respectively, but translocation to the shoots was negligible. Analysis of malondialdehyde (MDA), soluble protein content, and antioxidant enzyme activity revealed that Fe deficiency induced strong oxidative stress in Citrus maxima seedlings, which followed an order of Fe deficiency>Fe3+>α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3 NPs>Fe3O4 NPs. However, the chlorophyll leaf content of plants exposed to α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 NPs and Fe3+ were significantly reduced by 31.1%, 14.8%, 18.8% and 22.0%, respectively, relative to the control. Furthermore, RT-PCR analysis revealed no up-regulation of AHA and Nramp3 genes in Citrus maxima roots; however, the relative FRO2 gene expression upon exposure to iron oxide NPs was 1.4–2.8-fold higher than the control. Ferric reductase activity was consistently enhanced upon iron oxide NPs exposure. These findings advance understanding of the interaction mechanisms between metal oxide NPs and plants, and provide important knowledge need for the possible application of these materials in agriculture.
Translocation and Biotransformation of CuO Nanoparticles in Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Plants.

Abstract:Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) may be translocated and biochemically modified in vivo, which may influence the fate of MNPs in the environment. Here, synchrotron-based techniques were used to investigate the behavior of CuO NPs in rice plants exposed to 100 mg/L CuO NPs for 14 days. Micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) and micro X-ray absorption near edge structure (μ-XANES) analysis revealed that CuO NPs moved into the root epidermis, exodermis, and cortex, and they ultimately reached the endodermis but could not easily pass the Casparian strip; however, the formation of lateral roots provided a potential pathway for MNPs to enter the stele. Moreover, bulk-XANES data showed that CuO NPs were transported from the roots to the leaves, and that Cu (II) combined with cysteine, citrate, and phosphate ligands and was even reduced to Cu (I). CuO NPs and Cu-citrate were observed in the root cells using soft X-ray scanning transmission microscopy (STXM).

Abstract:The manufacture and multiple uses of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) will represent a possible source of soil contamination. Little is known about how these NPs transport in soil and plants. In this research, the transport of Zn/ZnO NPs in sandy loam soil and the uptake by corn plants (Zea mays) was investigated. Results showed that ZnO NPs exhibit low mobility in a soil column at various ionic strengths. Elution curves suggest that some of the adsorbed ZnO NPs/Zn were released in the presence of chemical perturbations. The breakthrough of released Zn coincided with Fe and Al (indicator of soil colloids) suggesting that soil colloids may act as carriers of strongly adsorbed NPs. By using electron microprobe, Zn/ZnO NPs aggregates were visualized associate with soil clay minerals. The uptake (mg/kg) of Zn by one-month old corn plants varied from 69 to 409 in roots and from 100 to 350 in shoots, respectively, in soils contaminated with different concentrations of ZnO NPs (from 100 to 800mg NPs/kg soil). Confocal microscope images showed that ZnO NPs aggregates penetrated the root epidermis and cortex through the apoplastic pathway; however, the presence of some NP aggregates in xylem vessels suggests that the aggregates passed the endodermis through the symplastic pathway.

The effects of Fe3O4 NPs on E. crassipes physiology and root morphology as well as the migration and transformation of Fe3O4 NPs in plant were studied emphatically. Fe3O4 NPs (200 mg/L) showed significant growth inhibition on E. crassipes roots and leaves after a 21-day exposure, while dissolved Fe3+ ions and Fe3O4 bulk particles had no obvious effect on E. crassipes growth. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the roots of E. crassipes were significantly damaged, the root tips became thin and the root epidermis began to peel off after Fe3O4 NPs exposure. In addition, there was disordered cell arrangement and a destroyed elongation zone of the root tips. The physiology of E. crassipes was also affected. In particular, after exposure to Fe3O4 NPs (200 mg/L), a distinct decrease in chlorophyll content and catalase activity and an increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content could be seen. Transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed that Fe3O4 NPs were present in the root epidermis, intercellular space and protoplasts, as well as in the leaf cytoplasm and chloroplasts. Vulcanization in the leaves was also found through diffraction analysis, which may be due to the small number of absorbed nanoparticles, some of which still existed in the original form in the leaves while others were reduced to FeS through interactions with plant components during translocation. These findings are helpful for better understanding the fate of NPs in aquatic plants. Moreover, it is important to evaluate the water environment safety of NPs.

Abstract:Food security is one of the biggest challenges for sustainable development, along with the ever-increasing global population and severe environmental issues. Nanotechnology can provide new approaches (e.g., nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanosensors) to improve the crop yield. Metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs), such as ZnO, CuO, and Fe2O3 NPs, have been applied in agriculture for pest control and biomass enhancement. Studies have demonstrated that the application of metal-oxide NPs showed either positive (e.g., increasing photosynthesis, enhancing stress tolerance, suppressing pathogens, etc.) or negative (e.g., inducing oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage) effects on crop plants. Therefore, to maximize the benefits of metal-oxide NPs in agriculture application and minimize the potential ecotoxicology implications, it is essential to thoroughly investigate and better understand the interactions between metal-oxide NPs and crop plants. This chapter would extensively discuss the effects of physicochemical properties (e.g., chemical compositions, sizes, concentrations, etc.) of metal-oxide NPs to crop plants in physiological (e.g., the phenotype of plant, biomass, root length, etc.), biochemical (e.g., biomarkers, enzymatic activity, etc.), and molecular (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, etc.) performance.
Nonlinear Ultrasounic Resonance Spectroscopy of Intact Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites

Abstract:The present study reports the influence of fiber orientation, laminate sequence and fabric type on the inherent nonlinearity of intact carbon fiber/epoxy composites using nonlinear resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy (NRUS) [1-2]. Fiber orientation of the CFRP samples were changed relative to the length of the sample. Since the fundamental flexural mode is excited, the properties of the composite along the length of the sample would influence the nonlinear response [3]. Two hypothesis were developed using the orientation results and theory of interlaminar stress. Additionally four different laminate sequences were also tested to study the influence of laminate sequence on the inherent nonlinear response. Finally the effect of fabric type was investigated by comparing the nonlinearity of woven fabric and continuous fabric [4]. For each case comparisons were made by capturing the frequency shifts, modal damping ratios, and higher harmonics. The hypotheses were tested using the NRUS results for the laminate sequence and fabric study. Conjunctures for physical interpretation were developed using these results.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) can interact with naturally occurring inorganic and organic substances in soils, which may change their transport behavior in soil and plants. This study was performed in two steps. In the first step, corn (Zea mays) plants were cultivated for one month in soil amended with 10 nm commercial spheroid ZnO NPs at 0–800 mg kg−1 and sodium alginate at 10 mg kg−1. In the second step, the plants were grown with ZnO NPs at 400 mg kg−1 and alginate at 0, 10, 50, and 100 mg kg−1. The dynamics of Zn concentrations in soil solution and Zn accumulation in plant tissues were determined by ICP-OES. Biomass accumulation, chlorophyll concentration, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes in leaves were also quantified. Results indicate that ZnO NPs coexisting with Zn dissolved species were continuously released to the soil solution to replenish the Zn ions or ZnO NPs scavenged by roots. At 400 and 800 mg kg−1, without alginate, ZnO NPs significantly reduced the root and shoot biomass production; however, plants treated with these NP concentrations, plus alginate, had significantly more Zn in tissues with no reduction in biomass production. Alginate significantly reduced the activity of stress enzymes catalase and peroxidase, which could indicate damage in the defense system. The effects of ZnO NPs in a food crop grown in alginate enriched soil, showing an excess of Zn in the aerial parts, are yet to be reported.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is promising for improving sustainable crop production and ensuring food safety due to its unique properties and minimum environmental impacts. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of foliar com-bined metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs, 100 mg/L) on cadmium (Cd) accumulation, translocation and exposure risk in wheat under field condition. Results showed that ZnO NPs combined with MgO or Fe3O4 NPs significantly increased the grain yield (13.8% and 14.8%) and straw biomass (16.9% and 18.4%) as compared to the control. Co-applied ZnO NPs with MgO, TiO2 or CeO2 NPs enhanced Cd uptake in aboveground wheat (12.4%-16.9%), while ZnO NPs combined with MnO2, CuO, Fe3O4 or Fe2O3 NPs remarkably reduced Cd concentration in wheat grains (23.8%-33.6%). According to the Cd bioaccessibility and daily intake, the health risk of Cd in wheat grains was significantly decreased by 36.1%-48.1% under ZnO NPs in combination with Fe3O4, Fe2O3, CuO or MnO2 NPs treatment. In addition, foliar spray of combined NPs also improved the nutritional quality of wheat grains by increasing micronutrients (Ca, S, Zn, Fe, B), protein content and reducing phytic acid content, especially in the combination of ZnO and MnO2 NPs. Taken together, this work demonstrates a feasible approach to achieve higher Cd removal efficiency and lower Cd levels and health risks in wheat grains with a tailored combination of metal-oxide NPs.

Abstract:Information about changes in physiological and agronomic parameters through the life cycle of plants exposed to engineered nanoparticles (NPs) is scarce. In this study, corn (Zea mays) plants were cultivated to full maturity in soil amended with either nCeO2 or nZnO at 0, 400, and 800 mg/kg. Gas exchange was monitored every 10 days, and at harvest, bioaccumulation of Ce and Zn in tissues was determined by ICP-OES/MS. The effects of NPs exposure on nutrient concentration and distribution in ears were also evaluated by ICP-OES and μ-XRF. Results showed that nCeO2 at both concentrations did not impact gas exchange in leaves at any growth stage, while nZnO at 800 mg/kg reduced net photosynthesis by 12%, stomatal conductance by 15%, and relative chlorophyll content by 10% at day 20. Yield was reduced by 38% with nCeO2 and by 49% with nZnO. Importantly, μ-XRF mapping showed that nCeO2 changed the allocation of calcium in kernels, compared to controls. In nCeO2 treated plants, Cu, K, Mn, and Zn were mainly localized at the insertion of kernels into cobs, but Ca and Fe were distributed in other parts of the kernels. Results showed that nCeO2 and nZnO reduced corn yield and altered quality of corn.
