Abstract:Objective: Bone tumors, known for their infrequent occurrence and diverse imaging characteristics, require precise differentiation into benign and malignant categories. Existing diagnostic approaches heavily depend on the laborious and variable manual delineation of tumor regions. Deep learning methods, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have emerged as a promising solution to tackle these issues. This paper introduces an enhanced deep-learning model based on AlexNet to classify femoral bone tumors accurately. Methods: This study involved 500 femoral tumor patients from July 2020 to January 2023, with 500 imaging cases (335 benign and 165 malignant). A CNN was employed for automated classification. The model framework encompassed training and testing stages, with 8 layers (5 Conv and 3 FC) and ReLU activation. Essential architectural modifications included Batch Normalization (BN) after the first and second convolutional filters. Comparative experiments with various existing methods were conducted to assess algorithm performance in tumor staging. Evaluation metrics encompassed accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, F-measure, ROC curves, and AUC values. Results: The analysis of precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score from the results demonstrates that the method introduced in this paper offers several advantages, including a low feature dimension and robust generalization (with an accuracy of 98.34 %, sensitivity of 97.26 %, specificity of 95.74 %, and an F1 score of 96.37). These findings underscore its exceptional overall detection capabilities. Notably, when comparing various algorithms, they generally exhibit similar classification performance. However, the algorithm presented in this paper stands out with a higher AUC value (AUC=0.848), signifying enhanced sensitivity and more robust specificity. Conclusion: This study presents an optimized AlexNet model for classifying femoral bone tumor images based on convolutional neural networks. This algorithm demonstrates higher accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score than other methods. Furthermore, the AUC value further confirms the outstanding performance of this algorithm in terms of sensitivity and specificity. This research makes a significant contribution to the field of medical image classification, offering an efficient automated classification solution, and holds the potential to advance the application of artificial intelligence in bone tumor classification.
The Potential for Different Computed Tomography-Based Machine Learning Networks to Automatically Segment and Differentiate Pelvic and Sacral Osteosarcoma from Ewing's Sarcoma

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to explore optimal computed tomography (CT)-based machine learning and deep learning methods for the identification of pelvic and sacral osteosarcomas (OS) and Ewing's sarcomas (ES). Methods: A total of 185 patients with pathologically confirmed pelvic and sacral OS and ES were analyzed. We first compared the performance of 9 radiomics-based machine learning models, 1 radiomics- based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) model, and 1 3-dimensional (3D) CNN model, respectively. We then proposed a 2-step no-new-Net (nnU-Net) model for the automatic segmentation and identification of OS and ES. The diagnoses by 3 radiologists were also obtained. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and accuracy (ACC) were used to evaluate the different models. Results: Age, tumor size, and tumor location showed significant differences between OS and ES (P<0.01). For the radiomics-based machine learning models, logistic regression (LR; AUC =0.716, ACC =0.660) performed best in the validation set. However, the radiomics-based CNN model had an AUC of 0.812 and ACC of 0.774 in the validation set, which were higher than those of the 3D CNN model (AUC =0.709, ACC = 0.717). Among all the models, the nnU-Net model performed best, with an AUC of 0.835 and an ACC of 0.830 in the validation set, which was significantly higher than the primary physician's diagnosis (ACCs ranged from 0.757 to 0.811) (P<0.01). Conclusions: The proposed nnU-Net model could be an end-to-end, non-invasive, and accurate auxiliary diagnostic tool for the differentiation of pelvic and sacral OS and ES.

Abstract:Uncontrolled and rapid cell growth in the body, leading to the formation of tumors, poses significant health risks by affecting surrounding healthy cells and can prove fatal if not treated at an early stage. Despite numerous efforts and promising results, accurately predicting and classifying tumors remains challenging. This research aims to enhance early detection and tumor growth recognition from MRI scans, facilitating prompt treatment initiation. Specifically, this study focuses on detecting lower-grade gliomas in the human brain using a dataset of MRI images from 110 patients. A deep learning approach utilizing the ResNet-50 model integrated with Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is employed for tumor detection. Following preprocessing and training with segmented tumor masks, the model achieved significant accuracy levels. Brain tumors, a severe type of malignant illness, can drastically reduce life expectancy if not detected early. They vary in type, grade, and location, influencing treatment strategies. MRI, though specialized, time-consuming, and costly, is essential for brain tumor diagnosis. Enhancing the accuracy and efficacy of MRIbased tumor identification and categorization is the goal of this research endeavor. ResNet-50, a pre-trained model, demonstrated high reliability for detecting and classifying medical images, achieving a notable accuracy rate. These improved accuracy rates are crucial for early tumor diagnosis, helping prevent severe physical consequences such as paralysis and disability.

[Transvaginal treatment of anterior vaginal prolapse with collagen implant transobturator fixation].

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Prolapse is a common disease with a multifactorial aetiology that may be either isolated or associated with other pelviperineal defects. Surgical reconstruction of the infravesical anterior segment by isolated colpomyorraphy of prolapse is often disappointing with a recurrence rate of 40% according to the literature. Several procedures, consisting of strengthening of the anterior vaginal wall have been proposed. The use of prosthetic material has revolutionized the treatment of cystocele with a reduction of the recurrence rate but at the price of a poorly defined morbidity. Few published studies have assessed the use of xenogeneic tissue in the treatment of anterior vaginal prolapse. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility, morbidity and short-term results of the use of Pelvicol reticulated collagen mesh in the treatment of cystoceles. OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the feasibility and short-term results of the transvaginal treatment of cystoceles using collagen implant transobturator (TO) fixation. Many new prosthesis-based techniques are designed to decrease recurrences after repair without prosthesis, but they are often non-standardized, with inadequate evaluation and insufficient follow-up. In contrast with synthetic material, few published studies have investigated the use of xenogeneic tissue. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients with a mean age of 70.6 years (range: 53-84) with grade 2 and 3 cystocele and a history of transvaginal prolapse repair in 7 cases, were operated by 2 operators according to an identical technique: the bladder was dissected via a transvaginal approach and a 4 x 7 cm porcine dermis collagen prosthesis was then placed underneath the bladder and fixed, at its anterolateral angles via a TO approach to the midline suburethral part by a resorbable suture. Vaginal hysterectomy was associated in 11 cases. RESULTS The mean specific prosthesis insertion time was 25 minutes. No intraoperative complication and no serious bleeding were reported. The mean hospital stay was 3.6 days (range: 2-9). The mean follow-up was 8 months (range: 6-16). One case of mesh expulsion was observed on D15, followed by complete healing without recurrence of the cystocele. One case of slight pain of the medial aspect of the thigh was observed with a favourable secondary outcome. The postoperative anatomical results showed complete repair of the prolapse at 1 month and on review. Two cases of de novo SUI were treated by transobturator suburethral tape with a good postoperative result. CONCLUSION The technique is feasible, simple, safe and ensures very satisfactory short-term results. Follow-up of these patients will be continued.
Prediction of Primary Tumor Sites in Spinal Metastases Using a ResNet-50 Convolutional Neural Network Based on MRI

Abstract:We aim to investigate the feasibility and evaluate the performance of a ResNet-50 convolutional neural network (CNN) based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting primary tumor sites in spinal metastases. Conventional sequences (T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and fat-suppressed T2-weighted sequences) MRIs of spinal metastases patients confirmed by pathology from August 2006 to August 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were partitioned into non-overlapping sets of 90% for training and 10% for testing. A deep learning model using ResNet-50 CNN was trained to classify primary tumor sites. Top-1 accuracy, precision, sensitivity, area under the curve for the receiver-operating characteristic (AUC-ROC), and F1 score were considered as the evaluation metrics. A total of 295 spinal metastases patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 59.9 years ± 10.9; 154 men) were evaluated. Included metastases originated from lung cancer (n = 142), kidney cancer (n = 50), mammary cancer (n = 41), thyroid cancer (n = 34), and prostate cancer (n = 28). For 5-class classification, AUC-ROC and top-1 accuracy were 0.77 and 52.97%, respectively. Additionally, AUC-ROC for different sequence subsets ranged between 0.70 (for T2-weighted) and 0.74 (for fat-suppressed T2-weighted). Our developed ResNet-50 CNN model for predicting primary tumor sites in spinal metastases at MRI has the potential to help prioritize the examinations and treatments in case of unknown primary for radiologists and oncologists.

Abstract:Background:: Patients with cancer can develop bone metastasis when a solid tumor invades the bone, which is the third most commonly affected site by metastatic cancer, after the lung and liver. The early detection of bone metastases is crucial for making appropriate treatment decisions and increasing survival rates. Deep learning, a mainstream branch of machine learning, has rapidly become an effective approach to analyzing medical images. Objective:: To automatically diagnose bone metastasis with bone scintigraphy, in this work, we proposed to cast the bone metastasis diagnosis problem into automated image classification by developing a deep learning-based automated classification model. Methods:: A self-defined convolutional neural network consisting of a feature extraction sub-network and feature classification sub-network was proposed to automatically detect lung cancer bone metastasis, with a feature extraction sub-network extracting hierarchal features from SPECT bone scintigrams and feature classification sub-network classifying high-level features into two categories (i.e., images with metastasis and without metastasis). Results:: Using clinical data of SPECT bone scintigrams, the proposed model was evaluated to examine its detection accuracy. The best performance was achieved if the two images (i.e., anterior and posterior scans) acquired from each patient were fused using pixel-wise addition operation on the bladder-excluded images, obtaining the best scores of 0.8038, 0.8051, 0.8039, 0.8039, 0.8036, and 0.8489 for accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, F-1 score, and AUC value, respectively. Conclusion:: The proposed two-class classification network can predict whether an image contains lung cancer bone metastasis with the best performance as compared to existing classical deep learning models. The high accumulation of 99mTc MDP in the urinary bladder has a negative impact on automated diagnosis of bone metastasis. It is recommended to remove the urinary bladder before automated analysis.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the use of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) combined with radiomics and deep learning technology for the identification of spinal metastases and primary malignant spinal bone tumor.Methods: The region growing algorithm was utilized to segment the lesions, and two parameters were defined based on the region of interest (ROI). Deep learning algorithms were employed: improved U-Net, which utilized CE-MRI parameter maps as input, and used 10 layers of CE images as input. Inception-ResNet model was used to extract relevant features for disease identification and construct a diagnosis classifier.Results: The diagnostic accuracy of radiomics was 0.74, while the average diagnostic accuracy of improved U-Net was 0.98, respectively. the PA of our model is as high as 98.001%. The findings indicate that CE-MRI based radiomics and deep learning have the potential to assist in the differential diagnosis of spinal metastases and primary malignant spinal bone tumor.Conclusion: CE-MRI combined with radiomics and deep learning technology can potentially assist in the differential diagnosis of spinal metastases and primary malignant spinal bone tumor, providing a promising approach for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:Spinal cord segmentation is the process of identifying and delineating the boundaries of the spinal cord in medical images such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans. This process is important for many medical applications, including the diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of spinal cord injuries and diseases. The segmentation process involves using image processing techniques to identify the spinal cord in the medical image and differentiate it from other structures, such as the vertebrae, cerebrospinal fluid, and tumors. There are several approaches to spinal cord segmentation, including manual segmentation by a trained expert, semi-automated segmentation using software tools that require some user input, and fully automated segmentation using deep learning algorithms. Researchers have proposed a wide range of system models for segmentation and tumor classification in spinal cord scans, but the majority of these models are designed for a specific segment of the spine. As a result, their performance is limited when applied to the entire lead, limiting their deployment scalability. This paper proposes a novel augmented model for spinal cord segmentation and tumor classification using deep nets to overcome this limitation. The model initially segments all five spinal cord regions and stores them as separate datasets. These datasets are manually tagged with cancer status and stage based on observations from multiple radiologist experts. Multiple Mask Regional Convolutional Neural Networks (MRCNNs) were trained on various datasets for region segmentation. The results of these segmentations were combined using a combination of VGGNet 19, YoLo V2, ResNet 101, and GoogLeNet models. These models were selected via performance validation on each segment. It was observed that VGGNet-19 was capable of classifying the thoracic and cervical regions, while YoLo V2 was able to efficiently classify the lumbar region, ResNet 101 exhibited better accuracy for sacral-region classification, and GoogLeNet was able to classify the coccygeal region with high performance accuracy. Due to use of specialized CNN models for different spinal cord segments, the proposed model was able to achieve a 14.5% better segmentation efficiency, 98.9% tumor classification accuracy, and a 15.6% higher speed performance when averaged over the entire dataset and compared with various state-of-the art models. This performance was observed to be better, due to which it can be used for various clinical deployments. Moreover, this performance was observed to be consistent across multiple tumor types and spinal cord regions, which makes the model highly scalable for a wide variety of spinal cord tumor classification scenarios.

Abstract:Abstract Bone tumors are one of the most common diseases in bone and soft tissue tumors, and accurate classification is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies. However, traditional pathological morphology diagnosis is subjective and uncertain, requiring highly specialized knowledge and experience. Therefore, how to efficiently and accurately classify bone tumor types based on pathological images is an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) model called Efficient and Enhance Network (EENet) was proposed for the automatic recognition of bone tumor pathological images. The model introduced efficient channel attention (ECA) blocks to improve the efficiency of feature extraction and reduce computational complexity. A comprehensive dataset of bone pathological images, including five types of bone lesion tissues and normal bone tissue, was compiled for the research. Due to the low incidence of bone tumors and the difficulty in obtaining a large amount of data, the transfer learning method was chosen to overcome the problem of limited data volume. The experimental results from the fivefold cross‐validation demonstrate that the proposed model achieves 99.06% accuracy, 99.08% precision, 99.19% recall, 99.81% specificity, and 99.03% F1‐score in the bone tumor classification task, highlighting its potential as a clinical diagnostic tool.

Abstract:Purpose The objective of this study is to develop a novel diagnostic tool using deep learning and radiomics to distinguish bone tumors on CT images as metastases from breast cancer. By providing a more accurate and reliable method for identifying metastatic bone tumors, this approach aims to significantly improve clinical decision-making and patient management in the context of breast cancer. Methods This study utilized CT images of bone tumors from 178 patients, including 78 cases of breast cancer bone metastases and 100 cases of non-breast cancer bone metastases. The dataset was processed using the Medical Image Segmentation via Self-distilling TransUNet (MISSU) model for automated segmentation. Radiomics features were extracted from the segmented tumor regions using the Pyradiomics library, capturing various aspects of tumor phenotype. Feature selection was conducted using LASSO regression to identify the most predictive features. The model's performance was evaluated using ten-fold cross-validation, with metrics including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and the Dice similarity coefficient. Results The developed radiomics model using the SVM algorithm achieved high discriminatory power, with an AUC of 0.936 on the training set and 0.953 on the test set. The model's performance metrics demonstrated strong accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Specifically, the accuracy was 0.864 for the training set and 0.853 for the test set. Sensitivity values were 0.838 and 0.789 for the training and test sets, respectively, while specificity values were 0.896 and 0.933 for the training and test sets, respectively. These results indicate that the SVM model effectively distinguishes between bone metastases originating from breast cancer and other origins. Additionally, the average Dice similarity coefficient for the automated segmentation was 0.915, demonstrating a high level of agreement with manual segmentations. Conclusion This study demonstrates the potential of combining CT-based radiomics and deep learning for the accurate detection of bone metastases from breast cancer. The high-performance metrics indicate that this approach can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy, aiding in early detection and improving patient outcomes. Future research should focus on validating these findings on larger datasets, integrating the model into clinical workflows, and exploring its use in personalized treatment planning.

Abstract:This study aims to predict bone metastasis in lung cancer patients using radiomics and deep learning. Early prediction of bone metastasis is crucial for timely intervention and personalized treatment plans. This can improve patient outcomes and quality of life. By integrating advanced imaging techniques with artificial intelligence, this study seeks to enhance predictive accuracy and clinical decision-making. Methods We included 189 lung cancer patients, comprising 89 with non-bone metastasis and 100 with confirmed bone metastasis. Radiomic features were extracted from CT images, and feature selection was performed using Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). We developed and validated a radiomics model and a deep learning model using DenseNet-264. Model performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Statistical comparisons were made using the DeLong test. Results The radiomics model achieved an AUC of 0.815 on the training set and 0.778 on the validation set. The DenseNet-264 model demonstrated superior performance with an AUC of 0.990 on the training set and 0.971 on the validation set. The DeLong test confirmed that the AUC of the DenseNet-264 model was significantly higher than that of the radiomics model (p < 0.05). Conclusions The DenseNet-264 model significantly outperforms the radiomics model in predicting bone metastasis in lung cancer patients. The early and accurate prediction provided by the deep learning model can facilitate timely interventions and personalized treatment planning, potentially improving patient outcomes. Future studies should focus on validating these findings in larger, multi-center cohorts and integrating clinical data to further enhance predictive accuracy

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of transfer learning on computed tomography (CT) images for the benign and malignant classification on renal tumors and to attempt to improve the classification accuracy by building patient-level models.METHODS: One hundred ninety-two cases of renal tumors were collected and identified by pathologic diagnosis within 15 days after enhanced CT examination (66% male, 70% malignant renal tumors, average age of 62.27 ± 12.26 years). The InceptionV3 model pretrained by the ImageNet dataset was cross-trained to perform this classification. Five image-level models were established for each of the Slice, region of interest (ROI), and rectangular box region (RBR) datasets. Then, two patient-level models were built based on the optimal image-level models. The network's performance was evaluated through analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and five-fold cross-validation.RESULTS: In the image-level models, the test results of model trained on the Slice dataset [accuracy (ACC) = 0.69 and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) = 0.45] were the worst. The corresponding results on the ROI dataset (ACC = 0.97 and MCC = 0.93) were slightly better than those on the RBR dataset (ACC = 0.93 and MCC = 0.85) when freezing the weights before the mixed6 layer. Compared with the image-level models, both patient-level models could discriminate better (ACC increased by 2%-5%) on the RBR and Slice datasets.CONCLUSIONS: Deep learning can be used to classify benign and malignant renal tumors from CT images. Our patient-level models could benefit from 3D data to improve the accuracy.

Abstract:Brain tumor diagnosis using MRI scans poses significant challenges due to the complex nature of tumor appearances and variations. Traditional methods often require extensive manual intervention and are prone to human error, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. These methods rely heavily on feature extraction and classification algorithms, which may not capture the intricate patterns present in brain MRI images. Conventional techniques often suffer from limited accuracy and generalizability, mainly due to the high variability in tumor appearance and the subjective nature of manual interpretation. Additionally, traditional machine learning models may struggle with the high-dimensional data inherent in MRI images. To address these limitations, our research introduces a deep learning-based model utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs).Our model employs a sequential CNN architecture with multiple convolutional, max-pooling, and dropout layers, followed by dense layers for classification. The proposed model demonstrates a significant improvement in diagnostic accuracy, achieving an overall accuracy of 98% on the test dataset. The precision, recall, and F1-scores ranging from 97 to 98% with a roc-auc ranging from 99 to 100% for each tumor category further substantiate the model's effectiveness. Additionally, the utilization of Grad-CAM visualizations provides insights into the model's decision-making process, enhancing interpretability. This research addresses the pressing need for enhanced diagnostic accuracy in identifying brain tumors through MRI imaging, tackling challenges such as variability in tumor appearance and the need for rapid, reliable diagnostic tools.

Abstract:Accurate differentiation of intramedullary spinal cord tumors and inflammatory demyelinating lesions and their subtypes are warranted because of their overlapping characteristics at MRI but with different treatments and prognosis. The authors aimed to develop a pipeline for spinal cord lesion segmentation and classification using two-dimensional MultiResUNet and DenseNet121 networks based on T2-weighted images. A retrospective cohort of 490 patients (118 patients with astrocytoma, 130 with ependymoma, 101 with multiple sclerosis [MS], and 141 with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders [NMOSD]) was used for model development, and a prospective cohort of 157 patients (34 patients with astrocytoma, 45 with ependymoma, 33 with MS, and 45 with NMOSD) was used for model testing. In the test cohort, the model achieved Dice scores of 0.77, 0.80, 0.50, and 0.58 for segmentation of astrocytoma, ependymoma, MS, and NMOSD, respectively, against manual labeling. Accuracies of 96% (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC], 0.99), 82% (AUC, 0.90), and 79% (AUC, 0.85) were achieved for the classifications of tumor versus demyelinating lesion, astrocytoma versus ependymoma, and MS versus NMOSD, respectively. In a subset of radiologically difficult cases, the classifier showed an accuracy of 79%-95% (AUC, 0.78-0.97). The established deep learning pipeline for segmentation and classification of spinal cord lesions can support an accurate radiologic diagnosis. Abstract:In the current study, the capability of pre-trained Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) by ImageNet features is proposed for categorization of brain tumors by utilizing MR images. The pre-trained models like ResNet50, InceptionV3, Xception, DenseNet121, MobileNetV3Large, EffcientNetB0, EfficientNetV2L, EfficientNetV2B0 have been exploited for classification purpose. The selection criteria is based upon the diverse proficiency each model depicts. For e.g., EfficientNetB0, ResNet50, MobileNet, Xception employ lower number of training parameters that makes them time efficient whereas, VGG16 though has higher number of training parameters, while increasing the training time without compromising with accuracy. The AlexNet on the other hand also has a reduced number of parameters in comparison to Google's Inception module which is more memory efficient. AlexNet takes more memory for training. The EfficientNet's are based on inverted residual blocks of MobileNetV2 with addition to Squeeze and Excitation blocks which makes them highly efficient for feature extraction. Therefore, in this research study, the above stated pre-trained models are used in by retaining the ReLU as an activation function due to its unbounded nature which also helps the model from Vanishing Gradient problem. By hyper tuning the top layers of different pre-trained models by adding Global Average Pooling layer and Dropout layer along with Fully Connected layer with classifier as SoftMax increases the overall efficiency and also reduces overfitting. The proposed comparative study shows the working of different pre-trained DCNN models for classifying brain tumors. The proposed experimental study is performed on three different databases i.e., Kaggle, BraTS 2018, and Real time dataset acquired from PGIMER and comparison analysis. The comparison analysis with existing methods as well as statistical analysis is also performed. It is observed from the results that EfficientNetB0 has outperformed all the existing methods. The pre-trained EfficientNetB0 architecture by hyper tuning the parameters, the testing accuracy has increased by 2.14% on Kaggle and increased the classification accuracy by 3.98% on BraTS dataset. On Real time dataset comprising of Glioblastoma Multiforme and Oligodendroglioma, highest accuracy of 97.32% is achieved among all other models.

Abstract:Brain tumors, characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, pose a significant threat to human health. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment and improved patient outcomes. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the primary diagnostic tool for brain tumors, providing detailed visualizations of the brain's intricate structures. However, the complexity and variability of tumor shapes and locations often challenge physicians in achieving accurate tumor segmentation on MRI images. Precise tumor segmentation is essential for effective treatment planning and prognosis. To address this challenge, we propose a novel hybrid deep learning technique, Convolutional Neural Network and ResNeXt101 (ConvNet-ResNeXt101), for automated tumor segmentation and classification. Our approach commences with data acquisition from the BRATS 2020 dataset, a benchmark collection of MRI images with corresponding tumor segmentations. Next, we employ batch normalization to smooth and enhance the collected data, followed by feature extraction using the AlexNet model. This involves extracting features based on tumor shape, position, shape, and surface characteristics. To select the most informative features for effective segmentation, we utilize an advanced meta-heuristics algorithm called Advanced Whale Optimization (AWO). AWO mimics the hunting behavior of humpback whales to iteratively search for the optimal feature subset. With the selected features, we perform image segmentation using the ConvNet-ResNeXt101 model. This deep learning architecture combines the strengths of ConvNet and ResNeXt101, a type of ConvNet with aggregated residual connections. Finally, we apply the same ConvNet-ResNeXt101 model for tumor classification, categorizing the segmented tumor into distinct types. Our experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed ConvNet-ResNeXt101 model compared to existing approaches, achieving an accuracy of 99.27% for the tumor core class with a minimum learning elapsed time of 0.53 s.

Abstract:Background and Objective Bone tumors present significant challenges in orthopedic medicine due to variations in clinical treatment approaches for different tumor types, including benign, malignant, and intermediate cases. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have emerged as prominent models for tumor classification. However, their limited perception ability hinders the acquisition of global structural information, potentially affecting classification accuracy. To address this limitation, we propose an optimized deep learning algorithm for precise classification of diverse bone tumors. Materials and Methods Our dataset comprises 786 computed tomography (CT) images of bone tumors, featuring sections from two distinct bone species, namely the tibia and femur. Sourced from The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, the dataset was meticulously preprocessed with noise reduction techniques. We introduce a novel fusion model, VGG16-VIT, leveraging the advantages of the VGG-16 network and the Vision Transformer (ViT) model. Specifically, we select 27 features from the third layer of VGG-16 and input them into the Vision Transformer encoder for comprehensive training. Furthermore, we evaluate the impact of secondary migration using CT images from Xiangya Hospital for validation. Results The proposed fusion model demonstrates notable improvements in classification performance. It effectively reduces the training time while achieving an impressive classification accuracy rate of 97.6%, marking a significant enhancement of 8% in sensitivity and specificity optimization. Furthermore, the investigation into secondary migration's effects on experimental outcomes across the three models reveals its potential to enhance system performance. Conclusion Our novel VGG-16 and Vision Transformer joint network exhibits robust classification performance on bone tumor datasets. The integration of these models enables precise and efficient classification, accommodating the diverse characteristics of different bone tumor types. This advancement holds great significance for the early detection and prognosis of bone tumor patients in the future.
