Abstract:During electrochemical CO2 reduction, CuO catalysts undergo reduction to Cu, with their primary products being predominantly C2+ products. By incorporating the oxygen donor Sb2O4 alongside CuO, the high oxidation state of Cu is stabilized through the oxygen spillover effect from Sb2O4 to Cu sites. This synergy leads to near‐unity selectivity toward CO production. Cu‐based catalysts are the most intensively studied in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), demonstrating the capacity to yield diverse C1 and C2+ products albeit with unsatisfactory selectivity. Manipulation of the oxidation state of Cu sites during CO2RR process proves advantageous in modulating the selectivity of productions, but poses a formidable challenge. Here, an oxygen spillover strategy is proposed to enhance the oxidation state of Cu during CO2RR by incorporating the oxygen donor Sb2O4. The Cu‐Sb bimetallic oxide catalyst attains a remarkable CO2‐to‐CO selectivity approaching unity, in stark contrast to the diverse product distribution observed with bare CuO. The exceptional Faradaic efficiency of CO can be maintained across a wide range of potential windows of ≈700 mV in 1 m KOH, and remains independent of the Cu/Sb ratio (ranging from 0.1:1 to 10:1). Correlative calculations and experimental results reveal that oxygen spillover from Sb2O4 to Cu sites maintains the relatively high valence state of Cu during CO2RR, which diminishes the binding strength of *CO, thereby achieving heightened selectivity in CO production. These findings propose the role of oxygen spillover in CO2RR over Cu‐based catalysts, and shed light on the rational design of highly selective CO2 reduction catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Renewable electricity-powered CO evolution from CO 2 emissions is a promising first step in the sustainable production of commodity chemicals, but performing electrochemical CO 2 reduction economically at scale is challenging since only noble metals, for example, gold and silver, have shown high performance for CO 2 -to-CO. Cu is a potential catalyst to achieve CO 2 reduction to CO at the industrial scale, but the C-C coupling process on Cu significantly depletes CO* intermediates, thus limiting the CO evolution rate and producing many hydrocarbon and oxygenate mixtures. Herein, we tune the CO selectivity of Cu by alloying a second metal Sb into Cu, and report an antimony-copper single-atom alloy catalyst (Sb 1 Cu) of isolated Sb-Cu interfaces that catalyzes the efficient conversion of CO 2 -to-CO with a Faradaic efficiency over 95%. The partial current density reaches 452 mA cm −2 with approximately 91% CO Faradaic efficiency, and negligible C 2+ products are observed. In situ spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations reason that the atomic Sb-Cu interface in Cu promotes CO 2 adsorption/activation and weakens the binding strength of CO*, which ends up with enhanced CO selectivity and production rates.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on Cu is often plagued by low selectivity and stability because of less-controlled preparation of electrocatalytic materials as well as insufficient understanding of the structure-performance relation. In this work, we develop a facile galvanic displacement protocol, involving an electropolished Cu sheet in a mixed Sb(III)-Cl- precursor solution, to form an Sb-modified Cu electrode that can selectively convert CO2 to CO with a Faradaic efficiency of ca. 82% and an undecayed reduction current over 12 h. Moreover, in situ infrared spectroscopy detects a relatively weak and red-shifted CO band on the Sb-modified Cu electrode as compared to that on the Cu electrode at potentials of CO2RR. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Sb clusters on the Cu surface change the electronic structures of Cu as well as Sb and thus weaken the CO binding strength on Cu sites, consistent with the observed CO band feature and high CO selectivity. These findings may shed light on the rational design of high-selectivity CO2RR electrocatalysts by proper interfacial structure engineering.
Superaerophilic Copper Nanowires for Efficient and Switchable CO2 Electroreduction.

Abstract:Copper is one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for switchable carbon dioxide conversion, but the design of an advanced Cu-based catalyst with high selectivity while suppressing hydrogen evolution remains a great challenge. Herein, we use Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) as the starting materials and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the surface modifier to make a superaerophilic electrode using a wettability control strategy. This strategy allows tuning of the selectivity of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and a decrease of the hydrogen evolution rate simultaneously by facilitating the supply of CO2 reactants and inhibiting the adsorption of water (protons). The transferring point from a pinning to bursting state turned out to be the optimized condition leading to the highest CO2RR faradaic efficiency without significant interference of current density. The optimized superaerophilic Cu NW catalyst showed CO-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 71% at -0.4 V vs. RHE and HCOOH-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 68% at -0.6 V vs. RHE. Moreover, the accelerated gas and ion diffusion and homogenized reactions also avoided accumulative damage on the surface of the Cu NWs and enhanced the stability of the Cu catalyst. This wettability tuning strategy provides a facile and efficient way to optimize the gas and ion diffusion layers, therefore promoting the performance of the CO2RR. This strategy potentially can be extended to the design of other gas consumption electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) holds great promise as a method for converting CO2 into valuable fuels and chemical raw materials using renewable energy. Cu, a key element in CO2RR, has garnered significant attention for its ability to transform CO2 into high-value fuels. In recent years, there has been a widespread focus on understanding various factors influencing the catalytic performance of copper, including crystal orientation, morphology, and size. Additionally, the presence of additive elements has been found to impact the reaction process through different mechanisms, influenced by concentration and binding forms. The catalytic design process is complicated by the intricate interplay of these factors, making it challenging to isolate individual effects. In this review, we examine the recent advancements in catalyst design, focusing on the influence of the surface structure of metallic Cu on the selectivity of CO2RR. Additionally, we provide a of how additives contribute to enhancing catalyst performance. Novel concepts are put forth for the design of Cu-based catalysts, with the aim of overcoming the current selectivity challenges. To begin, we elucidate the impact of surface structure design on CO2RR selectivity, with a specific emphasis on ethylene and ethanol production. Subsequently, we highlight the remarkable contributions of bimetallic catalysts to the selectivity of CO2RR. Finally, we propose the incorporation of cooperative and confinement effects as a strategy to modulate the selectivity of CO2RR. We look ahead to the future prospects of CO2RR, anticipating further breakthroughs in this field.

Abstract:Manipulating the product selectivity of an electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is challenging due to the unclear and uncontrollable active sites. Here, we report stable CO2RR operation with tunable product selectivity over a family of molecule-modulated copper catalysts. The coordination environment of Cu in catalysts is modulated by an imidazole-based molecule via different synthetic routes. Various carbonaceous products ranging from carbon monoxide, methane, and ethylene were selectively produced via, respectively, tuning the coordination environment of copper atoms from Cu-N, Cu-C, and Cu-Cu. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu-N sites weaken the adsorption energy of the *CO intermediate, which is beneficial for CO desorption. The Cu-C and Cu-Cu sites, respectively, facilitate the formation of *OCOH and *(CO)2 intermediates, favoring the CH4 and C2H4 pathways. This work provides a stable and simple model system for studying the influence of coordination elements on the product selectivity of CO2RR.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2RR into syngas provides an attractive way to produce raw materials for synthesizing various value‐added chemicals. However, a wide range of tunable syngas ratio of CO/H2 is hard to achieve during the electrochemical CO2 conversion process. Herein, we propose a facile electrodeposition method for the preparation of Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst with a high activity for the ratio‐tunable production of syngas. The Cu10Sb1 catalyst reaches a high FE of 71% for CO at a potential of ‐1.09 V vs. RHE with the tunable CO/H2 ratio of syngas from ~0.6 to ~7.8 at the applied potentials from ‐0.78 V to ‐1.09 V. Theoretical calculations reveal the tuning effect of Sb atoms on Cu‐based catalyst for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to syngas, in which the formation of CO on Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst possesses low energy barrier in potential‐limiting steps during CO2RR. Meanwhile, the robust charge interaction between COOH* species and the surface of Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst enhances the activity of COOH* species, thus improving FE and current for conversion into syngas products. This work brings a new strategy for the synthesis of low‐cost syngas catalyst and the tuning effect of metal atom on Cu‐based catalyst for CO2RR.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) can convert CO2 to C2 hydrocarbons and oxygenates over Cu-based catalysts, which has great potential to store renewable energy and close the carbon cycle. Developing facile method to modify the local electronic structure of Cu is a useful way to design efficient catalysts. Herein, we design a Pb-doping Cu2O catalyst with controllable Cu0-Cu+ sites. The catalyst generated high C2 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.9% with a current density of 203.8 mA cm-2 at -1.1 V vs. RHE in a flow cell. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the Pb doping in the Cu2O could stabilize the Cu0-Cu+ structure and enhance the CO adsorption and C-C coupling, leading to high activity for C2 products formation. The theoretical calculations also show that Pb doping could reduce the energy barrier for both CO2 activation and C-C coupling processes.

Abstract:Development of multiple-component catalyst materials is a new trend in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR). A new type of metal-oxide interaction is reported here to improve carbon monoxide production via synergistic effect between the CO2-to hydrocarbon selective metal material and CO2-to hydrogen generation oxide material. Cu/Sb2O3 material originates from the hetero-structured CuO/Sb2O3 by a facile two-step hydrolysis and precipitation method, cooperative to inhibit hydrogen evolution or methane product, achieving CO Faradaic efficiency to 92% in CO2 saturated KCl electrolyte at -0.99 V with good stability. The formation of a stable *COOH intermediate by electronic and geometric effects via Cu and Sb2O3 are responsible to promote CO selectivity. Cu-Sb2O3 interface interaction also destabilizes the adsorption *H as well, an intermediate for H2 evolution. This study proposes a versatile design strategy for construction and utilization of metal-oxide interface for eCO2RR.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) emerges as a highly efficient and cheap catalytic agent for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR), promising a sustainable route toward carbon neutrality. Despite its utility, the Cu catalyst exhibits limitations in terms of product selectivity, highlighting the need for the development of a superior catalyst design. Herein, we present a density functional theory (DFT) investigation into the selectivities of Cu-M (M = Pt, Ni, Pd, Zn, Ag, Au) bimetallic catalysts (BMCs) for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). The interaction between the metals of Cu-M makes the surface electrons reconstruct so that the d-band center shifts to the Fermi level. In terms of CO2 activation, the Cu-Ni catalyst exhibits superior performance. Additionally, the Cu-Pd catalyst favors the formation of *COH along the reaction pathway, favoring the generation of CH4. Conversely, the Cu-Ni catalyst preferentially produces *CHO, thereby favoring the production of CH3OH. For the Cu-Ag catalyst, the reaction intermediates along the C2 pathway are *CO-*CHO and *COH-*CHO. The Cu-Ni catalyst follows a reaction path that proceeds via *CO-*CO → *CO-*COH → *COH-CHO. On the other hand, the Cu-Pt catalyst exhibits a reaction sequence of *CO-*CO → *CO-*CHO → *OCH-*OCH. This study provides guiding significance for the design of Cu-based bimetallic catalysts aimed at improving the selectivities and efficiency of the CO2RR process.
Selective Enhancement of Methane Formation in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Enabled by a Raman-Inactive Oxygen-Containing Species on Cu

Abstract:The role of oxygen-containing species on Cu catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) remains unclear due to the difficulty in its stabilization under reaction conditions. Co-electrolysis of CO2 with an oxidant is an effective strategy to introduce oxygen-containing species on Cu during the CO2RR. In this work, we present concrete evidence demonstrating that an oxygen-containing species is able to not only enhance the rate of the CO2RR but also tune selectivities for certain products. Co-electrolysis of CO2 with H2O2 on Cu selectively accelerates the CH4 production rate by up to a factor of 200, but with only a slight enhancement of C2+ products. Combined investigations using in situ Raman spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations reveal that a Raman-inactive Cu oxide species is responsible for the improved CH4 production. Results reported in this work highlight the possibility of enhancing Cu-based CO2RR catalysts by introducing stable oxygen-containing catalytic structures.
Stabilizing Cu+ Species in Cu2O/CuO Catalyst via Carbon Intermediate Confinement for Selective CO2RR

Abstract:A facile confinement approach coupled with mixed‐valence‐state strategy is introduced to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu+ species. As a result, the mixed‐valence‐state Cu2O/CuO catalysts yields multi‐carbon (C2+) products with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 80.0 % at a C2+ partial current density of 320.0 mA cm−2 and shows superior stability exceeding 30 h in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyser. Copper oxide nanomaterials have been suggested to be efficient for highly selective multi‐carbon (C2+) production in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), due to the introduction of surface Cu+ species from oxide catalysts. However, the Cu+ species on the catalyst surface are prone to being reduced to Cu0 under reductive conditions during CO2RR. Here, a network‐structured catalyst is developed consisting of ultrafine Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles that harbor an abundance of pores. This catalyst is synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method and engineered to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu+ species. As a result, a C2+ products Faradaic efficiency (FE) of approximately 80.0% at a partial current density of 320.0 mA cm−2 is achieved, and a large C2+ to C1 ratio of ≈9.7. In situ XRD and XPS spectra are employed to reveal the indeed presence of Cu+ species on the catalyst surface during the CO2RR process, which extensively improves the adsorption of *CO intermediates and thus the C─C coupling reaction to form C2+ products.

Switching Product Selectivity in CO2 Electroreduction via Cu-S Bond Length Variation

Abstract:Regulating competitive reaction pathways to direct the selectivity of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction toward a desired product is crucial but remains challenging. Herein, switching product from HCOOH to CO is achieved by incorporating Sb element into the CuS, in which the Cu-S ionic bond is coupled with S-Sb covalent bond through bridging S atoms that elongates the Cu-S bond from 2.24 Å to 2.30 Å. Consequently, CuS with a shorter Cu-S bond exhibited a high selectivity for producing HCOOH, with a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 72 %. Conversely, Cu3SbS4 characterized by an elongated Cu-S bond exhibited the most pronounced production of CO with a maximum FE of 60 %. In situ spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations revealed that the altered Cu-S bond length and local coordination environment make the *HCOO binding energy weaker on Cu3SbS4 compared to that on CuS. Notably, a volcano-shaped correlation between the Cu-S bond length and adsorption strength of *COOH indicates that Cu-S in Cu3SbS4 as double-active sites facilitates the adsorption of *COOH, and thus results in the high selectivity of Cu3SbS4 toward CO.
Theory-guided Synthesis of Heterostructured Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 Catalyst Towards Superior Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to C2 Products

Abstract:Rational design of high performance electrocatalyst towards electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) to C2 products remains a grand challenge. Herein, a heterostructured Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 catalyst was designed under the guidance of theoretical calculation towards CO2RR to C2 products and prepared by sequential reverse micro -emulsion and thermal reduction. The heterostructure of Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 catalysts were corroborated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which displayed spherical shape and a size of 15.6 +/- 0.5 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy illustrated more electron transfer from copper (Cu) to tungsten (W) in heterostructured Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 catalyst than that pure Cu0.4W0.6. The pure Cu0.4W0.6 catalyst is domi-nated by hydrogen evolution in CO2RR, while heterostructured Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 catalyst show much enhanced selectivity and activity towards C2 products, which is strongly dependent on the mass ratio of Cu to Cu0.4W0.6, ascribing to the Cu/Cu0.4W0.6 interface. Eventually, the Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 champion catalyst displays a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 60.9% and a partial current density of 121.8 mA cm-2 at-1.0 V (vs. RHE) for C2 products in CO2RR in alkaline electrolyte. Computational studies indicated that the heterostructured Cu@Cu0.4W0.6 sup-presses hydrogen evolution and favors the production of CO and asymmetrical CO-CHO coupling, ascribing to the charge redistribution at the Cu/Cu0.4W0.6 interface. The high O affinity of W facilitates the rupture of C-O bond of *C2H3O intermediate and promotes the formation of ethylene. In-situ Raman spectroscopy revealed high surface coverage of bridging *CO and *CO-CHO intermediate for C2 products at 2660 cm-1 on Cu@Cu0.4W0.6, corroborating the CO-CHO coupling mechanism. This work highlights the importance of heterostructured Cu -based catalysts in tuning the CO2RR activity and selectivity of Cu-based materials.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction over Cu catalysts has shown great potential in producing a wide range of valuable chemicals, but it is still plagued by a poor controllability on product distribution. Herein, we demonstrate an effective regulation of CO2 reduction paths through a preanodization treatment of Cu foil electrodes in different electrolytes. The Cu electrode exhibits a superior C1 and C2+ product selectivity after being preanodized in NaClO4 (Cu-NaClO4) and Na2HPO4 electrolyte (Cu-Na2HPO4), respectively. Combined with in situ electrochemical Raman, ATR-SEIRAS, and SEM characterizations, the preferential C1 path is due to the deposition of many Cu nanocrystals with dominant Cu(111) facets on the Cu-NaClO4 electrode. In contrast, the preferential C2+ path over the Cu-Na2HPO4 is attributed to formation of a unique Cu nanodendritic morphology, which strengthens the *CO intermediate adsorption and induces an environment of low local H2O/CO2 stoichiometric ratio, thus facilitating C-C coupling for C2+ production. Our findings may shed light on the rational control of the CO2 reduction path through engineering of the Cu surface structure.

Abstract:Using renewable electricity to convert CO 2 into CO offers a sustainable route to produce a versatile intermediate to synthesize various chemicals and fuels. For economic CO 2 -to-CO conversion at scale, however, there exists a trade-off between selectivity and activity, necessitating the delicate design of efficient catalysts to hit the sweet spot. We demonstrate here that copper co-alloyed with isolated antimony and palladium atoms can efficiently activate and convert CO 2 molecules into CO. This trimetallic single-atom alloy catalyst (Cu 92 Sb 5 Pd 3 ) achieves an outstanding CO selectivity of 100% (±1.5%) at −402 mA cm −2 and a high activity up to −1 A cm −2 in a neutral electrolyte, surpassing numerous state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. Moreover, it exhibits long-term stability over 528 h at −100 mA cm −2 with an FE CO above 95%. Operando spectroscopy and theoretical simulation provide explicit evidence for the charge redistribution between Sb/Pd additions and Cu base, demonstrating that Sb and Pd single atoms synergistically shift the electronic structure of Cu for CO production and suppress hydrogen evolution. Additionally, the collaborative interactions enhance the overall stability of the catalyst. These results showcase that Sb/Pd-doped Cu can steadily carry out efficient CO 2 electrolysis under mild conditions, challenging the monopoly of noble metals in large-scale CO 2 -to-CO conversion.

Abstract:Thiolate-protected Cu clusters with well-defined structures and stable low-coordinated Cu+ species exhibit remarkable potential for the CO2RR and are ideal model catalysts for establishing structure–electrocatalytic property relationships at the atomic level. However, extant Cu clusters employed in the CO2RR predominantly yield 2e− products. Herein, two model Cu4(MMI)4 and Cu8(MMI)4(tBuS)4 clusters (MMI = 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole) are prepared to investigate the synergistic effect of Cu+ and adjacent S sites on the CO2RR. Cu4(MMI)4 can reduce CO2 to deep-reduced products with a 91.0% Faradaic efficiency (including 53.7% for CH4) while maintaining remarkable stability. Conversely, Cu8(MMI)4(tBuS)4 shows a remarkable preference for C2+ products, achieving a maximum FE of 58.5% with a C2+ current density of 152.1 mA∙cm−2. In situ XAS and ex situ XPS spectra reveal the preservation of Cu+ species in Cu clusters during CO2RR, extensively enhancing the adsorption capacity of *CO intermediates. Moreover, kinetic analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that S sites facilitate H2O dissociation into *H species, which directly participate in the protonation process on adjacent Cu sites for the protonation of *CO to *CHO. This study highlights the important role of Cu–S dual sites in Cu clusters and provides mechanistic insights into the CO2RR pathway at the atomic level.

Abstract:The development of efficient strategies to tune the CO 2 RR selectivity of Cu-based catalytic interfaces, especially on specific domains, such as Cu (200) facets with high activity toward competitive hydrogenation evolution reaction (HER), remains a challenging task. In this work, Cu-based catalytic layers with thiocyanate (-SCN), cyanide (-CN), or ethylenediamine (-NH 2 R) coordination linkages are prepared on Cu nanocolumns arrays (Cu NCAs) with predominant (200) exposed facets. The coordination of these ligands induces more Cu + species and inhibits the adsorption of H* on the Cu (200) facet, leading to enhanced CO 2 RR performance and substantially suppressing the competitive HER. The faradaic efficiency (FE) of Cu-SCN, Cu-CN, and Cu-NH 2 R NWAs for producing HCOOH, C 2 H 4 , and C1 mixture products (HCOOH and CO) reach to 66.5%, 21.1%, and 57.1%, respectively. In situ spectroscopic studies reveal Cu-SCN, Cu-CN, and Cu-NH 2 R exhibits more reasonable adsorption energy toward *OCHO, *CO, and *COOH intermediates, promoting the HCOOH, C 2 H 4 , and C1 mixture generation, respectively. This study might provide a new perspective for the development of high-performance Cu-based CO 2 RR catalytic electrodes based on the combination of various commercial free-standing Cu substrates and organic/inorganic ligands.
