Abstract:Pressure injury prevention is a significant issue as pressure injuries are difficult to heal, painful, and create clinical complications for patients. The aim of this study was to investigate knowledge and attitudes of first-year nursing students to pressure injury prevention, and to explore whether additional educational interventions augmented learning. A previously validated online survey was administered to three cohorts of first-year nursing students in 2016, 2017 (after additional online education), and 2018 (after further simulation education), and a subsequent comparative analysis was undertaken. Overall, the knowledge of students about pressure injury was low with measures to prevent pressure injury or shear achieving the lowest score (<50%). Students aged over 25 years (p < 0.001) and men (p = 0.14) gained higher attitude scores. There were significant differences for mean knowledge scores between the 2016 and 2018 cohorts (p = 0.04), including age group (p = 0.013) and number of clinical training units undertaken (p = 0.23). The 2016 cohort scored consistently lower in the attitude survey than both other cohorts (p < 0.001). Online resources and simulation experiences marginally improved knowledge and improved attitudes towards prevention of pressure injury. Nursing curricula should include targeted education to ensure student nurses are adequately prepared to prevent pressure injury through understanding of aetiology and risk assessment.
Nurse knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to pressure injuries: A cross-sectional study in an Australian metropolitan teaching hospital

Abstract:Background: Pressure injuries are associated with significant clinical complications with negative effects on the patient's emotional, psychological, social and physical wellbeing. However, in Australia little is known about the knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards hospital-acquired pressure injuries. Objective: To determine nurse knowledge and attitudes towards hospital-acquired pressure injuries and to identify barriers towards prevention. Methods: A cross-sectional study following the STROBE statement was conducted between May to July in 2017. All nurses at a major metropolitan teaching hospital in Western Australia were invited to participate. Nurse knowledge and attitude to pressure injury were assessed using validated Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment tool, and Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention tool. An open-ended question asked about the barriers to pressure injury prevention. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics and answers for the open-ended question were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Data from 224 nurses (response rate 19.0 %) were analysed. While nurses displayed a satisfactory attitude towards hospital-acquired pressure injury prevention, most nurses lacked adequate knowledge of the stages, causes and prevention of pressure injuries. Thematic analysis of responses to the open-ended question yielded two main themes: modifiable barriers to pressure injury prevention were lack of knowledge, attitude of pressure injury prevention and the scarcity of resources. Non-modifiable barriers to pressure injury prevention were the nursing environment and patient characteristics. Conclusion: Most nurses have satisfactory attitude towards pressure injury prevention, but inadequate knowledge about pressure injuries. Barriers to pressure injury prevention are attributed to nurse working environments, particularly impeded by staffing, time constraints and resources.
The Effect of Pressure Injury Training for Nurses: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analysis of the literature on training programs that aimed to improve nurses' pressure injury management skills.METHODS: Literature searches were conducted using Ovid-MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and Korean databases. The search terms used were: (nurse* AND ((pressure OR decubitus) AND (ulcer* OR injur*)) OR bed sore OR bedsore OR decubitus) AND (program* OR training)). Random-effects models were used to calculate the standardized mean difference and odds ratios, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to analyze the effects.MAIN RESULTS: Initial searches yielded 1,067 studies. Of these, 23 met the selection criteria. Nurses' knowledge (standard mean difference, 1.23; 95% CI, 0.50-1.96; P < .001), visual discrimination ability (standard mean difference, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.88-1.38; P < .001), and clinical judgment (odds ratio, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.46-1.57; P < .001) improved after the programs.CONCLUSIONS: Pressure injury training programs can improve nurses' competency. The results from this study indicate that such programs may help improve nurses' knowledge, visual discrimination ability, and clinical judgment and can be considered continuing education programs. However, large-scale studies are needed to confirm this conclusion.

Pressure injury prevalence in critical care settings: An observational pre‐post intervention study

Abstract:Abstract Aim To explore pressure injury prevention practices and evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on PI prevalence before and after an educational intervention. Design A multi‐centre observational study. Method Data were collected at two time points in May 2021 and April 2022 using a Qualtrics® online form. Two Registered Nurses at each site collected observational data at each time point by diagnosing and staging any identified pressure injuries as part of a prevalence study. Patients admitted to participating units were included. Results A total of 181 patients in critical care units were included at the two‐time points. Pressure injury prevalence was 60.9% at the outset, with 52.9% hospital‐acquired, 37.9% unit‐acquired and 23.0% medical device‐related. Post‐intervention prevalence decreased significantly to 28.7%, including 21.3% hospital‐acquired, 14.9% unit‐acquired, and 8.5% medical device‐related. Pressure injuries were prominent in the sacral region, head area, and heels. Stages I and II pressure injuries were the most common. Increased age and longer ICU stays are linked to a heightened risk of pressure injury development in critically ill patients, whereas higher haemoglobin levels show an inverse relationship with the development of both pressure injury and severe stages in the univariate analysis. The predictive models revealed that increased age and longer ICU stays are predictors for both pressure injury development and progression to severe stages, while Braden scores predict the likelihood of developing severe stages of pressure injuries. Conclusions This study has identified a benchmark for pressure injury prevalence in critical care units in Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate that pressure injuries can be prevented in critically ill patients when evidence‐based education strategies are implemented. Patient Care Impact Pressure injuries are an important issue for critically ill patients and can be prevented with proper investments. Strategies to prevent pressure injuries from admission will result in fewer pressure injuries. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality among patients due to pressure injuries continue to rise. Nurses play a critical role in preventing pressure injuries. However, published results on nurses' knowledge and attitudes for pressure injury prevention are often contradictory.OBJECTIVES: To conduct a meta-analysis of nurses' and nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward pressure injury prevention.DESIGN: A meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies.DATA SOURCES: Ten databases were queried for the meta-analysis. The search period was from the time of the databases' establishment to February 2023.REVIEW METHODS: This review followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. Statistical analysis was conducted with the Stata 15.0 software, and the quantitative data of knowledge and attitude toward preventing PI in all studies were summarized.RESULTS: Thirteen studies from 9 countries were included. The meta-analysis showed that nurses and nursing students had low knowledge but positive attitudes toward pressure injury prevention. Subgroup analysis showed that the pooled proportion of both knowledge and attitudes was higher in Asia than in Europe. Nurses had higher knowledge than nursing students, however, the former had a more negative attitude than the latter. Sensitivity analyses were robust. Egger's test showed no significant publication bias.CONCLUSION: The knowledge of nurses and nursing students about pressure injury prevention is not promising and there is an urgent need for continuous learning. Attitudes are more positive but there is room for improvement. The relevant departments should strengthen nurses' and nursing students' knowledge of pressure injury prevention and further improve their attitudes toward pressure injury prevention.

Abstract:Background: Pressure ulcer (PU) is a localized injury induced by prolonged pressure for a longer period to the skin and underlying soft tissue that leads to tissue ischemia, which in turn, decreases the supply of oxygen, essential nutrients, and ultimately tissue necrosis and can lead to serious complications including death. Aims of the study: to evaluate the effectiveness of an interventional program on nurses practices regarding pressure ulcer prevention at the intensive care unit in Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital, and to find out the relationships between nurse’s practices and their socio-demographic characteristics (age, level of education, years of experience in intensive care unit, and participation in training courses). Methodology: A pre-experimental design (one group: pre and post-test) was carried out at the Intensive Care Unit in Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital from October 5th 2020, to April 6th 2021. A non-probability (purposive) sampling has been performed during a selection of (27) nurses who works at the intensive care unit were exposed to the interventional program. The researcher used observational practices checklist which included (28) items. The validity of the study instrument was determined through the (15) of experts in the specialty field. Results: The results of this study revealed that were significant differences in nursing staff' practices scores in the post-test for the study group compared with scores in pre-test (in the posttest M =2.89 versus in the pre-test M =1.04). The findings also showed that there is no statistical relationship between nursing staff` practices and their demographic characteristics. Conclusion: The study concludes that the effectiveness of an interventional program on nursing staff` practices regarding pressure ulcer prevention is positive at a high rate. Recommendations: The study recommended providing an interventional program periodically to the nursing staff' who working at ICU in order to enhance their knowledge and practices level regarding PU prevention

Abstract:AIM: To determine the knowledge of pressure injury among Indian nurses using PZ-PUKT questionnaire and to evaluate the effect of an educational intervention on knowledge scores.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Quasi-experimental study design was used to test the Pressure injury knowledge of 273 nurses in a tertiary care teaching hospital. The Pieper Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test questionnaire was given as a pre-test prior to education session and re-administered after the activity was completed.RESULTS: The mean score of the pre-test was 48.58 ± 6.75 (C·I 47.8-49.4) and post-test 54.14 ± 7.69 (C·I 53.3-55.1), which showed a statistically significant improvement. In the pre-test, nurses had highest score in the prevention subset while wound subset had the greatest improvement in the post-test. Female participants had a better understanding about Pressure injuries when compared to males. Also, the Assistant Nursing Superintendents and ward in Charge nurses had better knowledge as compared with other nurses.CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of pressure injury among nurses is limited. Knowledge deficits should be identified and targeted educational interventions should be administered to all the nurses irrespective of their educational level and work experience. Wound certification courses should be instituted so that it gives the nurses a better opportunity to learn about pressure injuries at a certified level. All nurses should undergo periodic training in this ever-evolving field so as to provide the best care to their patients.

Abstract:Pressure injuries are a significant problem for immobile patients in acute care and can have a profound impact on patients' health and well‐being, putting pressure on healthcare systems and strain on the healthcare economy. Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing pressure injuries. A study using multiple methods was conducted to explore pressure injury prevention practices in four inpatient units within a tertiary‐level Australian Hospital. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather data across a 9‐month period. Observations, audits, surveys and interviews were used to collect data across five time points. Statistical analysis of the quantitative data was undertaken, and thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. Data were integrated using a realist evaluation framework. Ethical approval for the study was granted. The quantitative results demonstrated significant reductions in pressure injury prevalence from 11.5% at commencement to 4.8% at completion of the study. Hospital‐acquired pressure injuries also reduced from 4.6% to 1.9%. These results were achieved even though nursing knowledge and attitudes did not increase during the study period. Three qualitative themes were identified: Making Nursing Care Visible, Understanding the 'Why' and Engagement is Key. This study demonstrates that pressure injuries can be prevented with improvements in nursing care processes. Nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention did not change throughout this study and further research is required on how nurses' knowledge and attitudes contribute towards pressure injury prevention practices.

Australian Nurses' Knowledge of Pressure Injury Prevention and Management: A Cross-sectional Survey

Abstract:PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess nurses' knowledge of pressure injuries in order to gather benchmark data, identify knowledge gaps, and based on results, implement educational strategies to improve practice. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey . SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The study setting was a large Australian tertiary general hospital employing approximately 2500 nurses in both full-time and part-time roles. A proportional sample (25%) stratified by experience, preparation, and facility-generated categories (nursing grade) was generated. The sample included nursing students and nursing assistants. Three hundred six participants completing the survey . INSTRUMENT: The Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test (PZPUKT) version 2, comprising 72 statements, with 3 subscales ( prevention /risk, staging, and wound description) was used to measure pressure injury knowledge . Item responses are "True," "False," and "Don't know." For the purpose of analyses, correct responses were scored 1, and incorrect or "don't know" responses were scored 0. Generally accepted ranges of scoring for the original PZPUKT specify less than 70% as unsatisfactory, 70% to 79.9% as satisfactory, 80% to 89.9% as good, and 90% and greater as very good knowledge of pressure injury prevention . METHODS: The survey was advertised throughout the hospital by strategically placed posters, computer screen savers within the hospital, and e-mails. Respondents completed paper-based questionnaires and data were manually entered online. Data were collected between September 2015 and October 2016. Descriptive and nonparametric inferential statistical tests (Mann-Whitney U , Kruskal-Wallis H ) were used to analyze within sample differences in scores. RESULTS: The overall mean knowledge score was 65%; approximately two-thirds of the sample (68%) scored 60% and greater, reflecting an unsatisfactory knowledge level of pressure injury prevention according to the original PZPUKT scores. The lowest mean scores were found in the "wound description" subscale. Participants who sought pressure injury information via the Internet or had read pressure injury guidelines scored significantly higher than those who did not ( P = .001 and P < .001, respectively). Seventeen items were answered incorrectly by over half of participants, identifying important knowledge deficits, particularly within the wound description subscale. CONCLUSIONS: When compared with results from studies using the PZPUKT, we contend that a cutoff score of 60% and greater (instead of ≥70%) should be used to indicate an overall satisfactory score. Our results identified deficits in pressure injury knowledge related to seating support and seated individuals and wound dressings as areas where nurses would benefit from focused education strategies.

Abstract:Background: Medical Device-Related Pressure injury (MDRPI) are skin breakdowns related to certainmedical devices. Aim: Evaluate the effect of educational program about preventive nursing measures ofmedical devices related pressure injuries on nurses' performance and patients' clinical outcome. Design:Quasi-experimental research design. Setting: General Intensive Care Unit of Beni-Suief UniversityHospital and Intensive Care Unit of Emergency hospital at Tanta University. Subjects: All nurses (40nurses) from General ICU of BeniSuef University Hospital and (30 nurses) from Anesthesia ICU ofEmergency hospital at Tanta University. Purposive sampling of 60 adult critically ill patients whoadmitted to the previous mention settings. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection. Tool (I)Nurses 'Structured Interview Schedule and consisted of 3 parts; Socio-demographic characteristics ofnurses; Nurses 'knowledge about MDRPI. Tool (II) Nurses' Observational Checklist. Tool (III): Patient'Outcome Assessment. Results: A highly significant improvement were found among all studied nursesregarding their total level of knowledge and practice immediately and post 3 weeks of education programcompared to pre-program with P= 0.00. Also 30.0% of patients of control group had oral mucositis of lipscompared to only 3.3% of study group on 2nd week of program implementation. Conclusion: Significantimprovement of the total means score of nurse's knowledge and practices were observed at immediatephase. However this improvement was reduced by time. Oral mucositis and stages of pressure injurywere decreased significantly after implementation of the educational program Recommendation:Encouraging nurses to participate in seminars, conferences and workshops about MDRPI.
Pressure Injury Care Program Effects on Nurse’s Performance and Patients’ Pressure Injury Wound Healing Outcomes

Abstract:Pressure Injury (PI) is a major health problem which imposes a considerable social and economic burden nationally and globally. Aim of the study was to investigate the effect of PI care program on nurse’s performance and patients’ pressure injury wound healing outcomes. Study design was a quasi-experimental control group using pre-post and follow up design. Sample of thirty nurses and fifty patients were allocated in the current study in two medical units at one of the general hospitals in Ismailia City. Tools: Six tools include Nurse’s demographic data sheet, Pressure injury knowledge questionnaire, Pressure injury care observational checklist, Patient’s demographic and medical profile data sheet, The Braden Scale, and Patients’ pressure injury wound healing outcomes tool were used to collect data. Results: The study revealed that nurses’ knowledge and practices, were significantly improved towards PI care post program implementation when compared to preprogram. Moreover, there was a significant improvement in PI wound healing among patients cared with nurses after receiving the educational program compared with patients who received care before the program. Conclusion: The PI educational program could improve nurses’ performance as well as PI wound healing among cared patients. Recommendation: Endorse the educational program for pressure injury care in the nurses’ orientation program plus continuous in-service education.

Insights into pressure injury prevention: Assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Palestinian nursing students

Abstract:Highlights • Nursing students in this study displayed inadequate knowledge but positive attitudes and to somewhat unsafe practice towards pressure injury prevention. • Higher education levels and diverse clinical experiences were significantly linked to increased knowledge, positive attitudes, and the implementation of preventive practices for pressure injuries among student nurses. • Implementing a holistic strategy is necessary to enhance the understanding of pressure injury prevention and management among Palestinian nursing students. Aim To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Palestinian nursing students towards pressure injury prevention. Materials and methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 455 nursing students recruited from Arab American University-Palestine, employing a total population sample. Data collection forms include socio-demographic information, the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool, Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument and Pressure Injury Preventive Practices scale. Results The study found that students had a mean knowledge score of 54% (14.04/26), a positive attitude score of 75.8% (39.42/52), and demonstrated a fair level of practice 75.3% (30.12/40). Significant differences were observed in the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice total scores, linked to academic year, clinical experience, and the number of attended departments during clinical training (p < 0.001). Additionally, weak but significant positive relationships were found between practice and attitude scores (r = 0.303, p < 0.001), practice and knowledge score (r = 0.211, p < 0.001), and a moderate positive significant relationship between knowledge and attitude scores (r = 0.567, p < 0.001). Conclusion The study revealed insufficient knowledge, positive attitudes, and somewhat unsafe practices among nursing students regarding pressure injury prevention. It highlights the need for specific revisions in the nursing curriculum. Improvements can be achieved through detailed coverage in classrooms and laboratories, integrating simulation methods. Additionally, ensuring that students gain adequate experiences in clinical units, with a specific emphasis on pressure injury prevention, is crucial for improving students' capability and contribute to better pressure injury management.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Pressure injuries are the third most expensive condition after cancer and cardiovascular disease. Nurses are responsible for the direct and continuous care, treatment, and prevention of pressure injuries. To achieve optimal quality care, nursing knowledge and attitudes must be based on the best scientific evidence. This study aimed to examine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses working in intensive care units of hospitals affiliated with Zahedan Medical Sciences University regarding the prevention of pressure injuries.METHODS: This was a descriptive analytic study involving 89 critical care nurses. Data analysis was conducted using a 3-part questionnaire: demographic data, knowledge, and attitudes of intensive care nurses toward the prevention of pressure injuries. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS version 19 (IBM, Armonk, New York), using descriptive and inferential statistics (such as Pearson correlation coefficient, independent t test, and analysis of variance).RESULTS: The results showed that the mean ± SD score of pressure injury knowledge was 0.44 ± 0.12, and the attitude of participants toward pressure injury prevention was 2.69 ± 0.47. Scores varied widely; "nutrition" showed the highest mean score (0.71 ± 0.45), but "etiology and development" (0.42 ± 0.21) and "classification and observation" (0.42 ± 0.24) showed the lowest mean scores. Of the different aspects of attitudes toward pressure injury prevention, "the impact of pressure injuries" showed the highest mean score (2.95 ± 0.56), and "confidence in the effectiveness of prevention" showed the lowest mean score (2.56 ± 0.46). A statistically significant relationship was observed between pressure injury knowledge and attitudes toward pressure injury prevention (P < .001).CONCLUSIONS: Pressure injury prevention is one of many nursing care priorities and is a key indicator of the quality of nursing care. In order to achieve optimal quality care in this area, nurse managers and other administrators should make efforts to improve nursing knowledge and attitudes based on the latest scientific evidence for pressure injury prevention.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Patients in neurology intensive care units (ICU) are prone to pressure injuries (PU) due to factors such as severe illness, long-term bed rest, and physiological dysfunction. PU not only causes pain and complications to patients, but also increases medical burden, prolongs hospitalization time, and affects the recovery process. AIM To evaluate and optimize the effectiveness of pressure injury prevention nursing measures in neurology ICU patients. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted, and 60 patients who were admitted to the ICU of the Department of Neurology were selected and divided into an observation group and a control group according to the order of admission, with 30 people in each group. The observation group implemented pressure injury prevention and nursing measures, while the control group adopted routine care. RESULTS Comparison between observation and control groups following pressure injury prevention nursing intervention revealed significantly lower incidence rates in the observation group compared to the control group at 48 h (8.3% vs 26.7%), 7 d (16.7% vs 43.3%), and 14 d (20.0% vs 50.0%). This suggests a substantial reduction in pressure injury incidence in the observation group, with the gap widening over time. Additionally, patients in the observation group exhibited quicker recovery, with a shorter average time to get out of bed (48 h vs 72 h) and a shorter average length of stay (12 d vs 15 d) compared to the control group. Furthermore, post-intervention, patients in the observation group reported significantly improved quality of life scores, including higher scores in body satisfaction, feeling and function, and comfort (both psychological and physiological), indicating enhanced overall well-being and comfort following the implementation of pressure injury prevention nursing measures. CONCLUSION Implementing pressure injury preventive care measures for neurology ICU patients will have better results.

Abstract:Introduction: Nursing students in internship programs can play a role in preventing pressure injuries as they engage in real clinical situations and are assigned to conduct clinical tasks. Thus, nursing students in internship programs should be adequately prepared in terms of their knowledge and attitudes to contribute to pressure injury prevention. Objective: To explore and understand the knowledge and attitudes of nursing interns toward pressure injury prevention in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 161 nursing interns from various public hospitals across three provinces in Saudi Arabia and used an online questionnaire. The Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool and Attitude toward Pressure Ulcer Prevention instrument were used to collect data from nursing students in the internship program. The Statistical Package of the Social Sciences Program version 28 was used for the data analysis. Results: Participants reported inadequate knowledge regarding the prevention of pressure injuries, with a mean knowledge score of 48.15%. Additionally, the participants showed unsatisfactory attitudes toward the prevention of pressure injuries, with a mean score of 61.36%. Significant differences were observed in knowledge (P = 0.008) and attitude (P < 0.001) levels between sexes, with female participants scoring higher than male participants. Additionally, students who completed longer internships had better knowledge levels than those who completed shorter internships (P = 0.007). In the open-response question, participants reported a lack of preparation and support during the internship and suggested recommendations to address these deficiencies in preparation and support. Conclusion: Nursing interns need pre-internship preparation and continuous learning and support during the internship to manage and prevent pressure injuries.

Abstract:Research Objectives To educate nursing staff on use of dependent tilt-in-space and power wheelchairs to increase comfortability and competency of managing specialty equipment, and thus, to carryover pressure relief best practices for patients who use aforementioned wheelchairs out of bed. Design Collected data from October 1, 2022- June 25, 2023 of registered nurse (RN)/certified nursing assistant (CNA) full-time and per diem staff in an inpatient spinal cord injury (SCI) unit. Utilized a pre-post survey tracking RN/CNA competence/comfortability (0 = no confidence; 5 = fully comfortable/competent) in operating and performing pressure reliefs in a power or tilt-in-space wheelchair, and on low air loss (LAL) mattress. RNs/CNAs completed a standard training program instructed by physical and occupational therapists focusing on equipment and on mobilizing patients for pressure reliefs and optimal sitting. RNs/CNAs completed a post-test after training. Setting SCI unit in inpatient rehabilitation setting. Participants Participants included nursing staff on SCI unit (n = 30). Observational subjects include patients on SCI unit. Interventions PT/OT led didactic and hands-on standard training program educating nursing staff on pressure relief considerations: operating power and tilt-in-space wheelchairs, timing requirements, identifying bony prominences, turning patients/maintaining proper positioning, and accurately setting LAL to appropriate weight. Created job aides (visual/written instructions on how to operate power and tilt-in-space wheelchairs) and placed on RN Workstation On Wheel (WoW) carts to improve carryover. Main Outcome Measures Pre-post self-assessment measuring competency/comfortability of RNs/CNAs managing specialty wheelchairs and re-positioning patients in bed. Results Study revealed significance pre-post in power wheelchair pressure relief (t = -4.235), p< 0.001; tilt in space pressure relief (t = -5.174), p< 0.001; bed repositioning (t = -3.756), p=0.001; and wheelchair re-positioning (t = -4.980), p< 0.001. Additionally, no new incidences of Stage II or greater HAPI's were identified in the analyzed post-training time period. Conclusions Study findings revealed the training program increased competence/comfortability in nursing staff to perform pressure reliefs in specialty equipment. Thus, there is potential for improving nursing-therapy education to facilitate pressure relief protocols on an inpatient SCI unit. Author(s) Disclosures N/A.

Abstract:Introduction Pressure injuries are a common and significant concern in clinical practice, often serving as a vital quality indicator. While (clinical) practice guidelines have been established to offer recommendations for mitigating hospital-acquired pressure injuries, adherence among stakeholders remains inconsistent. The subjective perceptions of stakeholders, such as patients and nurses, may impede adherence to pressure ulcer prevention guidelines, potentially reducing the effectiveness of these interventions. However, there is currently insufficient evidence to comprehensively understand this influence. Therefore, this review aims to offer a broader understanding of how the perspectives of patients and nurses engaged in pressure injury prevention affect the effectiveness of specific interventions for pressure ulcer management. Methods and analysis We will conduct a convergent, segregated mixed-methods systematic review and perform a narrative synthesis with a focus on evidence of the effectiveness of pressure injury prevention strategies and patient and nurse perceptions. Our search will encompass several databases, including the 'Centre for Reviews and Dissemination' (CRD) Database, Medline (via Ovid), CINAHL (via Ebsco) and Scopus (via Elsevier). Additionally, we will cross-check reference lists from all included systematic reviews. Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts, and full texts and extract data from the included studies. The quality of methodology of systematic reviews will be assessed using 'A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews-2' (AMSTAR 2) and the risk of bias using 'Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews' (ROBIS). Qualitative studies will undergo critical appraisal using appropriate Joanna Briggs checklists. If it is feasible to pool data from included studies, we will synthesise them accordingly, using meta-analysis for quantitative reviews and meta-aggregation for qualitative studies. The results from both qualitative and quantitative analyses will be compared with derive new recommendations for healthcare practice aimed at enhancing the quality of care. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval is not required due to the nature of this intended review. Knowledge and attitudes regarding pressure injuries among assistant nurses in a clinical context

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate assistant nurses' knowledge of and attitudes towards pressure injuries in a clinical setting. It employed a cross‐sectional design, using two validated surveys: PUKAT 2.0 and APUP, alongside open‐ended questions. A convenience sample of 88 assistant nurses from five wards across two departments at a 600‐bed university hospital in Sweden participated. Participants answered the questionnaire and open‐ended questions, followed by a learning seminar led by the study leader covering PUKAT 2.0 knowledge questions. The seminar ended with an evaluation of this training approach. Results revealed a significant knowledge gap in pressure injury prevention among assistant nurses, with a mean PUKAT 2.0 knowledge score of 33.8 and a standard deviation of ±11.7 (a score of 60 is deemed satisfactory). Only 3.4% (n = 3) of participants achieved a satisfactory knowledge score. However, attitudes towards pressure injury prevention, assessed by the APUP tool, were generally positive among the majority of the participants. Open‐ended questions and evaluations of the seminar showed assistant nurses' desire for pressure injury prevention training and their appreciation for the seminar format. Further studies need to evaluate recurrent training procedures and departmental strategies aimed at reducing the knowledge gap among healthcare staff.
