Abstract:While the technologies available today can generate high-quality water from wastewater, the majority of the wastewater treatment plants are not intended to eliminate emerging xenobiotic pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care items. Most endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and personal care products (PPCPs) are more arctic than most regulated pollutants, and several of them have acid or critical functional groups. Together with the trace occurrence, EDCs and PPCPs create specific challenges for removal and subsequent improvements of wastewater treatment plants. Various technologies have been investigated extensively because they are highly persistent which leads to bioaccumulation. Researchers are increasingly addressing the human health hazards of xenobiotics and their removal. The emphasis of this review was on the promising methods available, especially nanotechnology, for the treatment of xenobiotic compounds that are accidentally released into the setting. In terms of xenobiotic elimination, nanotechnology provides better treatment than chemical treatments and their degradation mechanisms are addressed.

Abstract:In recent years, the removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from aqueous solutions has been gaining a lot of attention from researchers throughout the world. This is particularly due to the concern about their potential hazards and toxicities, as they are classified as emerging contaminants. Thus, there is an increasing need to investigate removal technologies for PPCPs at a deeper and more holistic level. This review aims to provide the latest developments in removal technologies for PPCPs. It first succinctly describes the types, characteristics, and hazards of PPCPs on the environment and human health. It then comprehensively covers a wide range of technologies for removing PPCPs from aqueous solutions, comprising the adsorption process (using carbon-based adsorbents, plant biomasses, clay and clay minerals, silica-based adsorbents, zeolite-based adsorbents, polymers, and hybrid adsorbents), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) (photocatalysis, Fenton or photo-Fenton, ozonation, ultrasonication, electrochemical oxidation, persulfate oxidation), membrane separation processes (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis), biodegradation processes (bacteria, algae, and fungi), and hybrid treatment (adsorption-AOP, AOP-membrane, membrane-biodegradation, and others). According to the specific experimental conditions, the reported removal efficiencies for adsorption, AOPs, membrane processes, biodegradation processes and hybrid treatment were 40-100%, 40-100%, 40-100%, 80-100% and 5-100%, respectively. In general, the findings revealed that biodegradation processes are favourable from the viewpoint of environmental sustainability. This review paper also highlights the challenges in this field of research, particularly the need to perform a thorough investigation of the operating parameters of the different removal technologies and conduct more studies on real industrial or sanitary wastewater. This review offers recommendations for future works to further advance the technical performances to eventually realize the wider application of these technologies at the industrial scale.

Abstract:The development of cyanobacterial blooms can have adverse effects on water bodies and may produce cyanotoxins. Several physical and chemical methods have been applied to remove cyanotoxins, but they have been significantly challenged due to extensive energy footprint and over-used chemicals, which limits practical application on a large scale. Selective removal has been regarded as the most promising approach recently for the elimination of prevalent and major bloom-forming cyanotoxins (e.g., microcystins and cylindrospermopsin) as natural organic matters and radical scavengers are ineluctably present in real scenarios. This paper reviews current advancements in research on selective oxidation and adsorption of cyanotoxins. Its goal is to provide comprehensive information on the treatment mechanism and the process feasibility involved in the cyanotoxin removal from real-world waters. Moreover, perspectives of cyanotoxin control and in situ selective elimination approaches are also reviewed. It is expected that the information gathered and discussed in this review can provide a useful and novel reference and direction for future pilot-scale applications.

Abstract:Water pollution and wastewater treatment problems are considered one of the largest challenges in the world today, and it is very crucial to pick the best way to remove these kinds of pollutants. This systematic review's objective is to categorize and investigate the strategies for eliminating pharmaceutical contaminants from aquatic environments, focusing on advanced oxidation techniques. For this purpose, Google Scholar, PubMed, Nature, Scopus, Web of Science, American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer, and Royal Society of Chemistry databases with the keywords Pharmaceuticals, Water Treatment, Advanced Oxidation Process, Photolysis, Fenton, Ozonation, Sonolysis, and Electrochemical were used. Physical, chemical, thermal, and biological methods are employed to eliminate these contaminants. However, even after purification, the drugs and resulting metabolites might still be present in the environment and cause serious damage. The analysis of studies revealed that advanced oxidation processes, which deserve more attention, can eliminate pharmaceutical contaminants because of their quick reaction times and strong oxidation capacities. This study demonstrated how environmental factors like pH, temperature, the content of the water, sunlight, etc., affect drug removal. Also, methods based on ozonation, ultrasonic radiation, electrochemical, ultraviolet radiation, and Fenton were investigated. Multiple hybrid systems with characteristics like high degradation efficiency, no secondary pollution production, and compatibility with the environment, high mineralization, and low operating costs were recommended as potential systems for further research.

Abstract:Coastal pollution caused by the importation of agricultural herbicides is one of the main environmental problems that directly affect the coastal primary productivity and even the safety of human seafood. It is urgent to evaluate the ecological risk objectively and explore feasible removal strategies. However, existing studies focus on the runoff distribution and risk assessment of specific herbicides in specific areas, and compared with soil environment, there are few studies on remediation methods for water environment. Therefore, we systematically reviewed the current situation of herbicide pollution in global coastal waters and the dose-response relationships of various herbicides on phytoplankton and higher trophic organisms from the perspective of ecological risks. In addition, we believe that compared with the traditional single physical and chemical remediation methods, biological remediation and its combined technology are the most promising methods for herbicide pollution remediation currently. Therefore, we focus on the application prospects, challenges, and management strategies of new bioremediation systems related to biology, such as constructed wetlands, membrane bioreactor processes, and microbial co-metabolism, in order to provide more advanced methods for reducing herbicide pollution in the water environment.

Abstract:Marine toxins pose a significant safety risk, leading to human intoxications and causing substantial economic losses in seafood-producing regions. The development of rapid, cost-effective, efficient, and reliable approaches for the containment of these substances is therefore crucial in order to mitigate the adverse impact of marine toxins. This research conducted a comprehensive review on the toxicity and influencing factors of marine toxins production. Additionally, depuration technologies, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, heating treatment, temporary maintenance and purification, and drug inhibition, were systematically summarized. The study also provided a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various depuration technologies and proposed strategies for future development.

Abstract:The stress of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) discharging to water bodies and the environment due to increased industrialization has reduced the availability of clean water. This poses a potential health hazard to animals and human life because water contamination is a great issue to the climate, plants, humans, and aquatic habitats. Pharmaceutical compounds are quantified in concentrations ranging from ng/Lto μg/L in aquatic environments worldwide. According to (Alsubih et al., 2022), the concentrations of carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, Lutvastatin, ciprofloxacin, and lorazepam were 616–906 ng/L, 16,532–21635 ng/L, 694–2068 ng/L, 734–1178 ng/L, and 2742–3775 ng/L respectively. Protecting and preserving our environment must be well-driven by all sectors to sustain development. Various methods have been utilized to eliminate the emerging pollutants, such as adsorption and biological and advanced oxidation processes. These methods have their benefits and drawbacks in the removal of pharmaceuticals. Successful wastewater treatment can save the water bodies; integrating green initiatives into the main purposes of actor firms, combined with continually periodic awareness of the current and potential implications of environmental/water pollution, will play a major role in water conservation. This article reviews key publications on the adsorption, biological, and advanced oxidation processes used to remove pharmaceutical products from the aquatic environment. It also sheds light on the pharmaceutical adsorption capability of adsorption, biological and advanced oxidation methods, and their efficacy in pharmaceutical concentration removal. A research gap has been identified for researchers to explore in order to eliminate the problem associated with pharmaceutical wastes. Therefore, future study should focus on combining advanced oxidation and adsorption processes for an excellent way to eliminate pharmaceutical products, even at low concentrations. Biological processes should focus on ideal circumstances and microbial processes that enable the simultaneous removal of pharmaceutical compounds and the effects of diverse environments on removal efficiency.

Abstract:With the development of world economies and the continuous improvement of living standards, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted significant attention because of their widespread detection in wastewater and the natural environment. Their biological toxicity, environmental persistence, and other hazardous characteristics might pose a threat to the ecological environment and human health. How to treat source-separated urine as a valuable recyclable resource has become a novel challenge. In this review, we briefly described the sources of pharmaceuticals, explored the various metabolic pathways of pharmaceuticals, and concluded that urinary excretion is the primary metabolic pathway of pharmaceuticals. Next, the current status of pharmaceutical contamination in human urine, sewage plants, and surface water was summarized. It is shown that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in human urine is usually 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than that in sewage plants and surface water. Then, the research progress of various technologies to treat pharmaceutical contaminants in urine was analyzed and compared, indicating the promise of advanced oxidation technologies to treat such wastewater, among which electrochemical oxidation has received widespread attention due to its advantages of cleanness, flexibility, and controllability. Therefore, the research progress of electrode materials and electrochemical technology to treat urine was reviewed, and finally, the future development direction was proposed, namely, coupling membrane treatment technology with intellectual development, which will help realize the scale and industrialization of source-separated urine treatment.

Abstract:The usage of pharmaceutical products is becoming increasingly extensive because of the emerging ailments. Analgesic and antipyretic drugs are ranked the most used drugs worldwide. Unused or expired analgesic and antipyretic drugs are being disposed into aquatic environment which could lead to water pollution bringing adverse impacts to the living organisms which in the end cause fatality. Paracetamol, as one of the most common drug used for analgesic and antipyretic purposes to treat fever and relieve pain, was found to have much higher concentration in aquatic stream and thus need to be removed efficiently. Various technologies for paracetamol removal have been established to solve this thorny issue. This study first gives reader understanding regarding some detrimental effects of paracetamol waste towards environmental and mankind with its current disposal level and limit. Then it provides comprehensive review on the technologies to remove paracetamol effectively from aqueous stream, such as advanced oxidation process, biodegradation, adsorption, and membrane separation, which in turn inspires reader for more innovation. This review is also wrapped up with the future challenges and prospects of these techniques. By comparing all advantages and disadvantages of different technologies, advanced oxidation process is then recommended as the most practically feasible method.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are a category of persistent, non-degradable pollutants that are widespread in the environment and in humans. They have attracted considerable attention due to their high bioaccumulation, multiple toxicities, long-term stability, and, in particular, their effects on human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for highly efficient technologies and systematic mechanisms for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA. Therefore, we summarize four mainstream technologies for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA in water and their research progress in this review, namely adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, microbial treatment, and membrane separation. Among them, adsorption technology is the earliest and relatively mature, the advanced oxidation process has relatively high treatment efficiency, there are deep and broad development prospects for microbial treatment in the future, and membrane separation technology can recycle raw materials and help to save resources. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing technologies, the development prospect of reasonable optimization technology is prospected, with a view to providing a practical scientific reference for the research and engineering practice of PFOS and PFOA pollution control in China.

Abstract:There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability. Composites of such adsorbents with polysaccharides have demonstrated distinct features like improved surface area, porosity, adsorptivity; improved reusability and structural integrity; improved mechanical strength, thermal stability when applied for the removal of the emergent pollutants. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of such fabricated composites is established; thereby making the water treatment process cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review has dealt with an in-depth, up-dated literature compilation of traditional as well as polysaccharide based composite adsorbents and addressed their performance evaluation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. A comparative study has revealed the merits of polysaccharide based composites and discussions have been made with a focus on future research directions in the related area.

Abstract:<p>The existence of toxic water contaminants (heavy metals, dyes, phenols, oils, pharmaceuticals and nutrients) restricts the sustainable supply of clean water globally. Among various economic and accessible wastewater disposal technologies, adsorption is the most extensively practiced approach due to its economic, feasible and sustainable characteristics. In recent years, polysaccharides have been extensively employed for constructing adsorption materials due to their intrinsic properties including high adsorptive ability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, biocompatibility and ease of modification. Here, a systematic review of polysaccharide-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is given. This review is aimed at providing: (1) general design principles for polysaccharide-based adsorbents, (2) some critical factors that may affect the adsorption and (3) future directions for the development of polysaccharide-based wastewater adsorbents. Overall, this review provides guidelines on the rational fabrication and application of polysaccharide-based adsorbents, which will be beneficial to novice/expert researchers in the field of wastewater remediation. Furthermore, the authors expect that this review provokes interdisciplinary discussions that would bring a revolution to the application of polysaccharide-based wastewater adsorbents.</p>

Abstract:Bisphenols have drawn increasing attention from regulatory agencies and scientific communities due to their widespread occurrences, distribution and endocrine disrupting effects, and severe toxicity. As one of the bisphenol A (BPA) substitutes, bisphenol S (BPS) is most frequently detected in the environment. Although numerous studies have shown its occurrence, distribution, and toxicity to certain aquatic species, investigation on BPS removal from aqueous environments is lacking. Thus, in this review, we summarize the state-of-art about BPS removal approaches including biodegradation, sorption, and advanced oxidation processes. Particular attention has been paid to the BPS sorption mechanisms, active species for BPS biodegradation, and the corresponding degradation pathways. The primary degradation intermediates formed during BPS oxidation (e.g. p-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid) are discussed. The effects of solution chemistry (pH, ionic strength, anion, and surfactants) on BPS decontamination are also emphasized. In addition, knowledge gaps, current challenges, and future research needs of BPS decontamination in real environments have been discussed briefly. Through this review we demonstrate the overarching scientific opportunities for a comprehensive understanding of the efficiency and mechanisms of the bio-and chemical remediation approaches of BPS contaminated water.

Abstract:In the current decade, Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution has become a critical global problem in both developing and developed countries. As a result of diverse human activities, NPS pollution has led to an excessive supply of inorganic nutrients (e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and metals) and organic compounds (e.g., pharmaceutical compounds and pesticides) into soils and surface waters which change the water quality. Continuous discharge of pollutants by NPS source mainly affects the soil and aquatic ecosystem, damaging the food chain and food web that exist in this Earth planet. On such a serious note, methods to mitigate the pollutants derived from NPS sources or treatment methods could effectively reduce the contaminant load. Recently, the use of constructed wetlands (CWs) for bioremediation purposes has been gaining considerable attention in many countries since they mostly mimic the natural and eco-friendly process for mitigating various types of pollutants. Although their successful use in the treatment of point source pollutants is well documented, information on the performance of CWs for treating organic pollutants, particularly pharmaceutical residues, is still not adequately summarized. Therefore, this paper focuses on outlining and reviewing the current information related to the use of CWs in mitigating pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) in soil and water reservoirs. Firstly, we summarized the key aspects on sources, occurrence, fate, and ecotoxicological effects of most common pharmaceuticals derived by NPS pollution. The second objective deals with the significance of plants present in CWs that help PCs remove via various possible mechanisms. Thirdly, we discuss the roles and importance of other factors (e.g., microorganism, temperature, and substrate) to remove PCs efficiently. Overall, this review highlights the current state-of-art of CWs for mitigating NPS-derived PCs and presses the area where future research is required to make the CWs application more successful shortly.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) were regarded as emerging environmental pollutants due to their ubiquitous appearance and high environmental risks. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) became the hub of PPCPs receiving major sources of PPCPs used by humans. Increasing concern has been focused on promoting cost-effective ways to eliminate PPCPs within WWTPs for blocking their route into the environment through effluent discharging. Among all advanced technologies, constructed wetlands (CWs) with a combination of plants, substrates, and microbes attracted attention due to their cost-effectiveness and easier maintenance during long-term operation. This study offers baseline data for risk control and future treatment by discussing the extent and dispersion of PPCPs in surface waters over the past ten years and identifying the mechanisms of PPCPs removal in CWs based on the up-to-present research, with a special focus on the contribution of sediments, vegetation, and the interactions of microorganisms. The significant role of wetland plants in the removal of PPCPs was detailed discussed in identifying the contribution of direct uptake, adsorption, phytovolatilization, and biodegradation. Meanwhile, the correlation between the physical-chemical characteristics of PPCPs, the configuration operation of wetlands, as well as the environmental conditions with PPCP removal were also further estimated. Finally, the critical issues and knowledge gaps before the real application were addressed followed by promoted future works, which are expected to provide a comprehensive foundation for study on PPCPs elimination utilizing CWs and drive to achieve large-scale applications to treat PPCPs-contaminated surface waters.

Abstract:The emerging contaminants (ECs) in the water environment are complicated, diverse and difficult to be degraded, which seriously threaten human health and ecological environment, and is an urgent problem to be solved. Ultraviolet (UV) combined with persulfate (PS) advanced oxidation process (AOPs) showed good degradation performance for ECs, and has been attracted the attention of researchers all the time. In this review, the research progress of various homogeneous and heterogeneous UV/PS AOPs were summarized (including UV/PS/metal ions, UV/PS/ozone, UV/PS/ultrasonic, UV/PS/metal-based materials, UV/PS/carbon-based loaded materials, UV/PS/photocatalytic materials). The degradation pathways and the contribution of active species in various oxidation systems were analyzed. The influence of different factors (pH value, water matrix, etc.) on the removal of ECs by various UV/PS AOPs was analyzed. In addition, this review puts forward some suggestions and positive prospects for future research direction focusing on existing defects and the limitations of engineering applications. For example, the optimization of light source reactor, the development of environmentally friendly and efficient new catalysts, and the optimization of process parameters, etc., to continuously promote the practical engineering application of UV/PS AOPs.

Abstract:Due to the needs of human life and health, pharmaceutical industry has made great progress in recent years, but it has also brought about severe environmental problems. The presence of pharmaceuticals in natural waters which might pose potential harm to the ecosystems and humans raised increasing concern worldwide. Pharmaceuticals cannot be effectively removed by conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) owing to the complex composition, high concentration of organic contaminants, high salinity and biological toxicity of pharmaceutical wastewater. Therefore, the development of efficient methods is needed to improve the removal effect of pharmaceuticals. This review provides an overview on three types of treatment technologies including physicochemical, chemical and biological processes and their advantages and disadvantages respectively. In addition, the future perspectives of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment are given.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) consist of a variety of compounds extensively used for the treatment of human and animal diseases and for health or cosmetic reasons. PPCPs are considered as emerging environmental contaminants due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment and high environmental risks. In wastewater treatment plants using conventional activated sludge processes, many PPCPs cannot be efficiently removed. Therefore, there is an increasing need for more effective and cost-efficiency ways of removing PPCPs while treating wastewater. Algae-based technologies have recently attracted growing attentions for their potential application in wastewater treatment and hazardous contaminant removal, which are advantages in reducing operation cost while generating valuable products and sequestrating greenhouse gases at the same time. This work reviews the up-to date researches to reveal potential toxic effects of PPCPs on algae and algae-bacteria consortia, identify mechanisms involved in PPCP removal, and assess the fate of PPCPs in algae-based treatment systems. Current researches suggest that algae and algae-bacteria consortia have great potentials in PPCP removal but more works are required before algae-based technologies can be implemented in large scales. Knowledge gaps are identified and further research focuses are proposed in this review.
