Abstract:Having a profound influence on marine and coastal environments worldwide, jellyfish hold significant scientific, economic, and public interest. The predictability of outbreaks and dispersion of jellyfish is limited by a fundamental gap in our understanding of their movement. Although there is evidence that jellyfish may actively affect their position, the role of active swimming in controlling jellyfish movement, and the characteristics of jellyfish swimming behavior, are not well understood. Consequently, jellyfish are often regarded as passively drifting or randomly moving organisms, both conceptually and in process studies. Here we show that the movement of jellyfish is controlled by distinctly directional swimming patterns, which are oriented against the direction of surface gravity waves. Taking a Lagrangian viewpoint from drone videos that allows the tracking of multiple adjacent jellyfish, and focusing the scyphozoan jellyfish as a model organism, we show that the behavior of individual jellyfish translates into a synchronized directional swimming of the aggregation as a whole. Numerical simulations show that this counter-wave swimming behavior results in biased correlated random-walk movement patterns that reduce the risk of stranding, thus providing jellyfish with an adaptive advantage critical to their survival. Our results emphasize the importance of active swimming in regulating jellyfish movement, and open the way for a more accurate representation in model studies, thus improving the predictability of jellyfish outbreaks and their dispersion, and contributing to our ability to mitigate their possible impact on coastal infrastructure and populations.

Abstract:Drifting in large numbers, jellyfish often interfere in the operation of nearshore electrical plants, cause disturbances to marine recreational activity, encroach upon local fish populations, and impact food webs. Understanding the dynamic mechanisms behind jellyfish behavior is of importance in order to create migration models. In this work, we focus on the small-scale dynamics of jellyfish and offer a novel method to accurately track the trajectory of individual jellyfish with respect to the water current. The existing approaches for similar tasks usually involve a surface float tied to the jellyfish for location reference. This operation may induce drag on the jellyfish, thereby affecting its motion. Instead, we propose to attach an acoustic tag to the jellyfish's bell and then track its geographical location using acoustic beacons, which detect the tag's emissions, decode its ID and depth, and calculate the tag's position via time-difference-of-arrival acoustic localization. To observe the jellyfish's motion relative to the water current, we use a submerged floater that is deployed together with the released tagged jellyfish. Being Lagrangian on the horizontal plane while maintaining an on-demand depth, the floater drifts with the water current; thus, its trajectory serves as a reference for the current's velocity field. Using an acoustic modem and a hydrophone mounted to the floater, the operator from the deploying boat remotely changes the depth of the floater on-the-fly, to align it with that of the tagged jellyfish (as reported by the jellyfish's acoustic tag), thereby serving as a reference for the jellyfish's 3D motion with respect to the water current. We performed a proof-of-concept to demonstrate our approach over three jellyfish caught and tagged in Haifa Bay, and three corresponding floaters. The results present different dynamics for the three jellyfish, and show how they can move with, and even against, the water current.

Abstract:Jellyfish have been called one of the most energy-efficient animals in the world due to the ease in which they move through their fluid environment, by product of their morphological, muscular, and material properties. We investigated jellyfish locomotion by conducting \textit{in silico} comparative studies and explored swimming performance across different fluid scales (e.g., Reynolds Number), bell contraction frequencies, and contraction phase kinematics for a jellyfish with a fineness ratio of 1 (ratio of bell height to bell diameter). To study these relationships, an open source implementation of the immersed boundary method was used (\textit{IB2d}) to solve the fully coupled fluid-structure interaction problem of a flexible jellyfish bell in a viscous fluid. Thorough 2D parameter subspace explorations illustrated optimal parameter combinations in which give rise to enhanced swimming performance. All performance metrics indicated a higher sensitivity to bell actuation frequency than fluid scale or contraction phase kinematics, via Sobol sensitivity analysis, on a high performance parameter subspace. Moreover, Pareto-like fronts were identified in the overall performance space involving the cost of transport and forward swimming speed. Patterns emerged within these performance spaces when highlighting different parameter regions, which complemented the global sensitivity results. Lastly, an open source computational model for jellyfish locomotion is offered to the science community that can be used as a starting place for future numerical experimentation.
Navigation of micro-swimmers in steady flow: the importance of symmetries

Abstract:Marine microorganisms must cope with complex flow patterns and even turbulence as they navigate the ocean. To survive they must avoid predation and find efficient energy sources. A major difficulty in analysing possible survival strategies is that the time series of environmental cues in non-linear flow is complex, and that it depends on the decisions taken by the organism. One way of determining and evaluating optimal strategies is reinforcement learning. In a proof-of-principle study, Colabrese et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (2017)] used this method to find out how a micro-swimmer in a vortex flow can navigate towards the surface as quickly as possible, given a fixed swimming speed. The swimmer measured its instantaneous swimming direction and the local flow vorticity in the laboratory frame, and reacted to these cues by swimming either left, right, up, or down. However, usually a motile microorganism measures the local flow rather than global information, and it can only react in relation to the local flow, because in general it cannot access global information (such as up or down in the laboratory frame). Here we analyse optimal strategies with local signals and actions that do not refer to the laboratory frame. We demonstrate that symmetry-breaking is required in order to learn vertical migration in a meaningful way. Using reinforcement learning we analyse the emerging strategies for different sets of environmental cues that microorganisms are known to measure.

Hopscotching Jellyfish: combining different duty cycle kinematics can lead to enhanced swimming performance

Abstract:Jellyfish (Medusozoa) have been deemed the most energy-efficient animals in the world. Their bell morphology and relatively simple nervous systems make them attractive to robotocists. Although, the science community has devoted much attention to understanding their swimming performance, there is still much to be learned about the jet propulsive locomotive gait displayed by prolate jellyfish. Traditionally, computational scientists have assumed uniform duty cycle kinematics when computationally modeling jellyfish locomotion. In this study we used fluid-structure interaction modeling to determine possible enhancements in performance from shuffling different duty cycles together across multiple Reynolds numbers and contraction frequencies. Increases in speed and reductions in cost of transport were observed as high as 80% and 50%, respectively. Generally, the net effects were greater for cases involving lower contraction frequencies. Overall, robust duty cycle combinations were determined that led to enhanced or impeded performance.

Coral reef fish larvae show no evidence for map-based navigation after physical displacement

Abstract:Millions of minute, newly hatched coral reef fish larvae get carried into the open ocean by highly complex and variable currents. To survive, they must return to a suitable reef habitat within a species-specific time. Strikingly, previous studies have demonstrated that return to home reefs is much more frequent than would be expected by chance. It has been shown that magnetic and sun compass orientation can help cardinalfish maintain their innate swimming direction but do they also have a navigational map to cope with unexpected displacements? If displaced settling-stage cardinalfish Ostorhinchus doederleini use positional information during their pelagic dispersal, we would expect them to re-orient toward their home reef. However, after physical displacement by 180 km, the fish showed a swimming direction indistinguishable from original directions near the capture site. This suggests that the tested fish rely on innate or learned compass directions and show no evidence for map-based navigation.

Abstract:Microorganisms can efficiently navigate in anisotropic complex fluids, but the precise swimming mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Their dynamics is determined by the interplay between multiple effects, including the fluid's orientation order, swimmer's undulatory gait and the finite length. Here, we extend the numerical study of the two-dimensional undulatory motions of a flexible swimmer in lyotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) by Lin et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 921, 2021, p. A25) to the scenario of arbitrary swimming directions with respect to the nematic director. The swimmer is modelled as a nearly inextensible yet flexible fibre with imposed travelling-wave-like actuation. We investigate the orientation-dependent swimming behaviours in nematic LCPs for an infinitely long sheet (i.e. Taylor's swimming sheet model) and finite-length swimmers. We demonstrate that the swimmer must be sufficiently stiff to produce undulatory deformations to gain net motions. Moreover, a motile finite-length swimmer can reorient itself to swim parallel with the nematic director, due to a net body torque arising from the asymmetric distribution of the polymer force along the body.

Abstract:Fish have evolved diverse and robust locomotive strategies to swim efficiently in complex fluid environments. However, we know little, if anything, about how these strategies can be achieved. Although most studies suggest that fish rely on the lateral line system to sense local flow and optimise body undulation, recent work has shown that fish are still able to gain benefits from the local flow even with the lateral line impaired. In this paper, we hypothesise that fish can save energy by extracting vortices shed from their neighbours using only simple proprioceptive sensing with the caudal fin. We tested this hypothesis on both computational and robotic fish by synthesising a central pattern generator (CPG) with feedback, proprioceptive sensing, and reinforcement learning. The CPG controller adjusts the body undulation after receiving feedback from the proprioceptive sensing signal, decoded via reinforcement learning. In our study, we consider potential proprioceptive sensing inputs to consist of low-dimensional signals (e.g. perceived forces) detected from the flow. With simulations on a computational robot and experiments on a robotic fish swimming in unknown dynamic flows, we show that the simple proprioceptive sensing is sufficient to optimise the body undulation to save energy, without any input from the lateral line. Our results reveal a new sensory-motor mechanism in schooling fish and shed new light on the strategy of control for robotic fish swimming in complex flows with high efficiency.

Abstract:The ability to orient oneself in response to environmental cues is crucial to the survival and function of diverse organisms. One such orientation behavior is the alignment of aquatic organisms with (negative rheotaxis) or against (positive rheotaxis) fluid current. The questions of whether low-Reynolds-number, undulatory swimmers, such as worms, rheotax and whether rheotaxis is a deliberate or an involuntary response to mechanical forces have been the subject of conflicting reports. To address these questions, we use Caenorhabditis elegans as a model undulatory swimmer and examine, in experiment and theory, the orientation of C. elegans in the presence of flow. We find that when close to a stationary surface the animal aligns itself against the direction of the flow. We elucidate for the first time to our knowledge the mechanisms of rheotaxis in worms and show that rheotaxis can be explained solely by mechanical forces and does not require sensory input or deliberate action. The interaction between the flow field induced by the swimmer and a nearby surface causes the swimmer to tilt toward the surface and the velocity gradient associated with the flow rotates the animal to face upstream. Fluid mechanical computer simulations faithfully mimic the behavior observed in experiments, supporting the notion that rheotaxis behavior can be fully explained by hydrodynamics. Our study highlights the important role of hydrodynamics in the behavior of small undulating swimmers and may assist in developing control strategies to affect the animals' life cycles.

Abstract:Jellyfish - majestic, energy efficient, and one of the oldest species that inhabits the oceans. It is perhaps the second item, their efficiency, that has captivated scientists for decades into investigating their locomotive behavior. Yet, no one has specifically explored the role that their tentacles and oral arms may have on their potential swimming performance, arguably the very features that give jellyfish their beauty while instilling fear into their prey (and beach-goers). We perform comparative in silico experiments to study how tentacle/oral arm number, length, placement, and density affect forward swimming speeds, cost of transport, and fluid mixing. An open source implementation of the immersed boundary method was used (IB2d) to solve the fully coupled fluid-structure interaction problem of an idealized flexible jellyfish bell with poroelastic tentacles/oral arms in a viscous, incompressible fluid. Overall tentacles/oral arms inhibit forward swimming speeds, by appearing to suppress vortex formation. Non-linear relationships between length and fluid scale (Reynolds Number) as well as tentacle/oral arm number, density, and placement are observed, illustrating that small changes in morphology could result in significant decreases in swimming speeds, in some cases by downwards of 400% between cases with to without tentacles/oral arms.

Abstract:Fish rheotaxis, or alignment into flow currents, results from intertwined sensory, neural and actuation mechanisms, all coupled with hydrodynamics to produce a behavior that is critical for upstream migration and position holding in oncoming flows. Among several sensory modalities, the lateral line sensory system is thought to play a major role in the fish ability to sense minute water motions in their vicinity and, thus, in their rheotactic behavior. Here, we propose a theoretical model consisting of a fishlike body equipped with lateral pressure sensors in oncoming uniform flows. We compute the optimal sensor locations that maximize the sensory output. Our results confirm recent experimental findings that correlate the layout of the lateral line sensors with the distribution of hydrodynamic information at the fish surface. We then examine the behavioral response of the fishlike model as a function of its orientation and swimming speed relative to the background flow. Our working hypothesis is that fish respond to sensory information by adjusting their orientation according to the perceived difference in pressure. We find that, as in fish rheotaxis, the fishlike body responds by aligning into the oncoming flow. These findings may have significant implications on understanding the interplay between the sensory output and fish behavior.

Dazzling damselfish: investigating motion dazzle as a defence strategy in humbug damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus)

Abstract:Many animals possess high-contrast body patterns. When moving, these patterns may create confusing or conflicting visual cues that affect a predator's ability to visually target or capture them, a phenomenon called motion dazzle. The dazzle patterns may generate different forms of optical illusion that can mislead observers about the shape, speed, trajectory and range of the animal. Moreover, it is possible that the disruptive visual effects of the high contrast body patterns can be enhanced when moving against a high contrast background. In this study, we used the humbug damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus) to model the apparent motion cues of its high contrast body stripes against high contrast background gratings of different widths and orientations, from the perspective of a predator. We found with higher frequency gratings, when the background is indiscriminable to a viewer, that the humbugs may rely on the confusing motion cues created by internal stripes. With lower frequency gratings, where the background is likely perceivable by a viewer, the humbugs can rely more on confusing motion cues induced by disruption of edges from both the background and body patterning. We also assessed whether humbugs altered their behaviour in response to different backgrounds. Humbugs remained closer and moved less overall in response to backgrounds with a spatial structure similar to their own striped body pattern, possibly to stay camouflaged against the background and thus avoid revealing themselves to potential predators. At backgrounds with higher frequency gratings, humbugs moved more which may represent a greater reliance on the internal contrast of the fish's striped body pattern to generate motion dazzle. It is possible that the humbug stripes provide multiple protective strategies depending on the context and that the fish may alter their behaviour depending on the background to maximise their protection.

Abstract:Abstract Like most animals, the survival of fish depends on navigation in space. This capacity has been documented in behavioral studies that have revealed navigation strategies. However, little is known about how freely swimming fish represent space and locomotion in the brain to enable successful navigation. Using a wireless neural recording system, we measured the activity of single neurons in the goldfish lateral pallium, a brain region known to be involved in spatial memory and navigation, while the fish swam freely in a two-dimensional water tank. We found that cells in the lateral pallium of the goldfish encode the edges of the environment, the fish head direction, the fish swimming speed, and the fish swimming velocity-vector. This study sheds light on how information related to navigation is represented in the brain of fish and addresses the fundamental question of the neural basis of navigation in this group of vertebrates.

Active gyrotactic stability of microswimmers using hydromechanical signals

Abstract:Many plankton species undergo daily vertical migration to large depths in the turbulent ocean. To do this efficiently, the plankton can use a gyrotactic mechanism, aligning them with gravity to swim downwards, or against gravity to swim upwards. Many species show passive mechanisms for gyrotactic stability. For example, bottom-heavy plankton tend to align upwards. This is efficient for upward migration in quiescent flows, but it is often sensitive to turbulence which upsets the alignment. Here we suggest a simple, robust active mechanism for gyrotactic stability, which is only lightly affected by turbulence and allows alignment both along and against gravity. We use a model for a plankton that swims with a constant speed and can actively steer in response to hydrodynamic signals encountered in simulations of a turbulent flow. Using reinforcement learning, we identify the optimal steering strategy. By using its setae to sense its settling velocity transversal to its swimming direction, the swimmer can deduce information about the direction of gravity, allowing it to actively align upwards. The mechanism leads to a rate of upward migration in a turbulent flow that is of the same order as in quiescent flows, unless the turbulence is very vigorous. In contrast, passive swimmers with typical parameters of copepods show much smaller upward velocity in turbulence. Settling may even cause them to migrate downwards in vigorous turbulence.

Abstract:Path integration is a powerful navigational mechanism whereby individuals continuously update their distance and angular vector of movement to calculate their position in relation to their departure location, allowing them to return along the most direct route even across unfamiliar terrain. While path integration has been investigated in several terrestrial animals, it has never been demonstrated in aquatic vertebrates, where movement occurs through volumetric space and sensory cues available for navigation are likely to differ substantially from those in terrestrial environments. By performing displacement experiments with Lamprologus ocellatus , we show evidence consistent with fish using path integration to navigate alongside other mechanisms (allothetic place cues and route recapitulation). These results indicate that the use of path integration is likely to be deeply rooted within the vertebrate phylogeny irrespective of the environment, and suggests that fish may possess a spatial encoding system that parallels that of mammals.

Don't bet against the natal homing abilities of marine fishes

Abstract:Whether marine fishes are capable of homing to their natal areas has long been something of an enigma. For some estuarine species or sharks (which have extended nondispersal juvenile stages or are born as relatively large, fully formed juveniles), the answer is clearly 'yes' (Thorrold et al. ; Feldheim et al. ), but for most marine fishes, the issue is much more mysterious. Many species have free-floating eggs, and most have pelagic, passively dispersing larvae. It is challenging to imagine how adult fish might navigate to a region of the ocean they experienced only as eggs or larvae, and easier to assume that such dispersal leads inexorably to high gene flow, and even panmixia. One way to resolve the conundrum would be to track fish from hatching to reproduction, but for marine fishes with tiny eggs and drifting larvae, this is notoriously difficult to do (Bradbury & Laurel ). In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Bonanomi et al. () use a creative approach to solve this challenge for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) populations that mingle in the vicinity of Greenland. They show that cod that disperse more than a 1000 km away from Iceland as eggs and larvae, then spend years growing on the far side of Greenland, while mixing with two local populations, return as adults to spawning areas near Iceland - and further, that this behaviour has remained stable over more than six decades. They manage this feat with a clever use of historical cod tracking data, modern genomic data and genetic analysis of decades-old DNA obtained from archived materials. Their results have important implications for our view of the biocomplexity of marine fish populations, and how we should manage them.
From fish out of water to new insights on navigation mechanisms in animals

Abstract:Navigation is a critical ability for animal survival and is important for food foraging, finding shelter, seeking mates and a variety of other behaviors. Given their fundamental role and universal function in the animal kingdom, it makes sense to explore whether space representation and navigation mechanisms are dependent on the species, ecological system, brain structures, or whether they share general and universal properties. One way to explore this issue behaviorally is by domain transfer methodology, where one species is embedded in another species' environment and must cope with an otherwise familiar (in our case, navigation) task. Here we push this idea to the limit by studying the navigation ability of a fish in a terrestrial environment. For this purpose, we trained goldfish to use a Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV), a wheeled terrestrial platform that reacts to the fish's movement characteristics, location and orientation in its water tank to change the vehicle's; i.e., the water tank's, position in the arena. The fish were tasked to "drive" the FOV towards a visual target in the terrestrial environment, which was observable through the walls of the tank, and indeed were able to operate the vehicle, explore the new environment, and reach the target regardless of the starting point, all while avoiding dead-ends and correcting location inaccuracies. These results demonstrate how a fish was able to transfer its space representation and navigation skills to a wholly different terrestrial environment, thus supporting the hypothesis that the former possess a universal quality that is species-independent.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of a swimming jellyfish depends on the morphology of the species. For example, oblate jellyfish appear to generate wide vortex structures near the bell margin. The vortex structures affect both the propulsion system and the feeding structure because the swimming and prey capturing activities are interrelated processes in these taxa. A three-dimensional computational model was established for an oblate jellyfish to analyse how the vortex structures present in the wake affect the swimming mechanism and the propulsion efficiency, which is defined as the ratio of power output (thrust multiplied by centre velocity) to power input (energy rate required for bell contraction). An improved penalty immersed boundary method was adopted to consider the interactions between the swimming jellyfish and the ambient fluid. The vortex structures in the wake of the swimming jellyfish were investigated in detail. The vortices generated by the contraction and expansion of the jellyfish bell interact with the vortex structures generated by the forward-moving behaviour of the jellyfish. The resulting vortex structures not only transfer momentum to the swimming jellyfish via the fluid, thereby providing the main source of thrust, but also have an implication for feeding. The effects of the elastic properties of the jellyfish on the propulsion were examined. The propulsion efficiency reaches its optimum value at particular elastic properties. We also investigated the effect of the swimming pattern of jellyfish on the propulsion efficiency. The efficiency increases with the flapping frequency and force duration.

Abstract:Jellyfish exhibit innovative swimming patterns that contribute to exploring the origins of animal locomotion. However, the genetic and cellular basis of these patterns remains unclear. Herein, we generated chromosome-level genome assemblies of two jellyfish species, Turritopsis rubra and Aurelia coerulea, which exhibit straight and free-swimming patterns, respectively. We observe positive selection of numerous genes involved in statolith formation, hair cell ciliogenesis, ciliary motility, and motor neuron function. The lineage-specific absence of otolith morphogenesis- and ciliary movement-related genes in T. rubra may be associated with homeostatic structural statocyst loss and straight swimming pattern. Notably, single-cell transcriptomic analyses covering key developmental stages reveal the enrichment of diapause-related genes in the cyst during reverse development, suggesting that the sustained diapause state favours the development of new polyps under favourable conditions. This study highlights the complex relationship between genetics, locomotion patterns and survival strategies in jellyfish, thereby providing valuable insights into the evolutionary lineages of movement and adaptation in the animal kingdom.
Fluid inertia is an effective gyrotactic mechanism for settling elongated micro-swimmers

Abstract:Gyrotaxis, which helps swimming marine plankton to stabilize upward orientation, is essential for their vertical migration through the water column. There are three classical mechanisms for gyrotaxis: bottom-heaviness, fore-aft asymmetry of plankton shape, and active movement by using a gravity receptor. Here, we discover a gyrotactic mechanism arising from the effect of fluid inertia for settling elongated micro-swimmers. Fluid inertia influences swimmers' rotation when they swim relative to the local fluid with a velocity that is comparable to the local fluid velocity scale. When swimming velocity is greater than the settling speed, swimmers tend to swim in the direction opposite to gravity. Our results reveal the importance of fluid inertia on settling micro-swimmers, and also indicate that settling effect is nontrivial even if a swimmer swims much faster than it settles. By direct numerical simulations, we examine the statistics of the orientation and spatial clustering of cells in both quiescent and turbulent flows. A power law between the mean swimming direction and the swimming and settling velocities is observed in turbulence. We also demonstrate how fluid inertia enhances the gyrotaxis of plankton chains. Enhanced preferential orientation in the opposite direction to gravity reinforce the upward migration to the turbulent upper layer of the ocean.
