Abstract:Dual-band electrochromic (EC) films selectively modulating visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) light promise an attractive option for efficiently utilizing solar energy. Anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) promises dual-band EC capability; however, it suffers from the difficulty in circumventing the obstacle in the NIR region and sluggish reaction kinetics as well as poor cycling stability. In this work, 2D (Nb, F) co-doped TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) arrays are reported as an effective single-component dual-band EC material. The co-doping can induce an oriented growth of freestanding ultrathin NSs with exposed (001) facets which promote the EC reaction kinetics. The high aspect ratio and orientation of the nanosheets favor the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect triggered by electrochemical bias voltages, thus achieving independent modulation of the NIR transmittance. Three application scenarios of the NSs can be presented based on selective, efficient, and high optical modulation in the NIR and VIS regions (79.5% at 700 nm and 78.4% at 1300 nm, respectively), unprecedented fast bleaching/coloring times (3.0/8.4 s), and a long cycle life (500 cycles). Moreover, the films exhibit multi-color EC and energy storage materials. This work may provide an insight into the single-component dual-band EC mechanism of 2D TiO2 nanostructures and present promising potential for energy saving and smart display applications.

Abstract:We herein propose a proof of concept of a full dual-band electrochromic (EC) device able to selectively modulate solar light between 300 and 1600 nm. Dual-band control was achieved by exploiting the complementarity and cooperation of two earth-abundant and nontoxic transition metal oxide nanocrystalline materials able to absorb two different spectral regions when electrochemically charged. The active materials were obtained through a microwave-based synthetic protocol able to produce massive amounts of ligand-free water-soluble TiO2@WO3–x colloidal heterostructured nanocrystals. The inorganic heterostructures were deposited via a spray-coating airbrushing method. Graphene was adopted as a near-infrared (NIR) transparent material for the realization of conductive substrates. The nano-dimensions and stable solubility of active materials during the deposition process endorse the development of scattering-free nanostructured electrodes and high device transparency under open-circuit conditions, respectively. The spectro-electrochemical properties of the as-made nanostructured electrodes were evaluated in relation to pure WO3–x and TiO2 single nanomaterials and a blend of these. The heterostructured architecture ensures a lower optical haze (around 8% of total radiation) as against the blend, contributing to improving the overall EC performance. The TiO2@WO3–x -based device shows 67% NIR shielding while preserving 60% of visible (VIS) transparency under cool-mode conditions and 89% screening of VIS and NIR radiation under the dark mode. These results represent an important step forward in the development of scalable dual-band EC devices.

Abstract:Previous studies examined the incorporation of several transition metal oxides into niobium oxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) to enhance the electrochromic (EC) performance. The objective was to improve the durability, color neutrality, coloring efficiency, and optical characteristics because individual metal oxides often exhibit limits that might affect overall functioning. Therefore, an innovative approach, integrating mixed metal oxides, emerges. This novel approach addresses these challenges and unlocks new possibilities to enhance EC efficiency. This paper introduces a new method for synthesizing niobium oxide/tungsten oxide (Nb 2 O 5 /WO 3 ) bilayer composite materials using a combination of facile hydrothermal synthesis with electrodeposition. The electrochromic, structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of Nb 2 O 5 thin films were enhanced by conducting thorough investigations into different electrodeposition cycles of WO 3 . X-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of WO 3 in combination with the crystalline orthorhombic Nb 2 O 5 structure. Raman spectroscopy examined the vibrational modes and structural attributes in the Nb 2 O 5 /WO 3 bilayer composite thin films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was conducted to examine the chemical composition, elemental state, and surface characteristics. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the impact of different WO 3 electrodeposition cycles on the morphology of Nb 2 O 5 thin films, revealing the formation of porous, clumped, and dense nanogranules on the film surface. EC investigations highlight the superior performance of the NW-20 thin film, showing efficient Li + accommodation. The optimized NW-20 sample exhibits excellent EC performance, including high optical modulation (81.48 %), good reversibility (98.11 %), and high coloration efficiency (115.09 cm 2 /C) with long-term cycling stability. The NW-20 electrode incorporated into a device form exhibited functionality on a real-world scale, delivering remarkable EC performance with substantial optical modulation (78.1 %) and excellent cycling stability. These findings expand the potential applications of Nb 2 O 5 /WO 3 bilayer composite materials for EC performance.

Abstract:Surface-fluorinated TiO2 nanocrystal (NC) films have been obtained on FTO substrates by the one-pot solvothermal reaction. It is found that the fluorine anions play a critical role in generating oxygen vacancies, and triggering the self-assembly of the NCs to form porous structures as well as modulating the NC sizes. Meanwhile, pristine TiO2 films show simultaneous electrochromic regulation behavior in the near-infrared and visible regions under electrochemical bias, which reveals that the surface-fluorinated TiO2 films demonstrate selective and independent modulation in the two regions with high optical modulation (77.5% at 700 nm and 62.5% at 1300 nm); unprecedentedly fast electrochromic response (coloring time of 12.8 s at 700 nm and 10.2 s at 1300 nm; bleaching time of 4.3 s at 700 nm and 4.8 s at 1300 nm); and superior cycling stability, respectively. The films also exhibit three typical energy efficient working modes and promising energy storage characteristics. In addition, the electrochromic reaction kinetics is scrutinized, and it is investigated that the effect of oxygen vacancies is of importance to realize NIR selective modulation. The present work may prove to provide an alternative approach for designing high performance TiO2-based single-component dual-band energy efficient electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Dual-band electrochromic (EC) smart windows, capable of selectively regulating visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) light, are one of the most attractive candidates for significantly reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Niobium-tungsten bimetallic oxides exhibit a fast ion exchange rate and high cycle stability in the electrochemical field because of various structural chemistry in the pseudobinary system Nb2O5/WO3, showing excellent dual-band EC potential. Herein, we employ a facile hydrothermal technique to synthesize Nb18W16O93 (NWO) films with low temperature and facile procedure. The obtained NWO films exhibit impressive dual-band EC performances, including high optical regulation (radiation blocking rates of 33.1% and 77.5% in the VIS and NIR band) and short coloring/bleaching time (12s/2.6s at 633 nm and 6.5s/6.1s at 1600 nm). These results demonstrate that NWO is a high-performance dual-band EC material and provide a practical strategy to synthesize the NWO electrodes with nanorod stacking architectures in a facile and low-cost way.

Abstract:A novel metal–organic coordination polymer (DTPB‐MCP) featuring multiple redox centers is successfully prepared. This mixed‐valence system exhibits improved electrochromism and energy‐storage performances compared with other similar materials. The electrochromic supercapacitor device by combining DTPB‐MCP with V2O5 can be utilized as a smart window for regulating the solar radiation and reusing the electric energy. Electrochromic supercapacitors, which indicate energy states through optical color changes, are gaining significant attention for their potential in energy saving and recycling. In this study, a novel metal–organic coordination polymer (DTPB‐MCP) is successfully synthesized using an N,N'‐diphenyl‐1,4‐phenylenediamine (DTPB)‐functionalized phenanthroline ligand. The resulting DTPB‐MCP film demonstrated desirable electrochromic performance in both the visible light (ΔT:77.6% at 730 nm) and near‐infrared (ΔT: 49.2% at 1410 nm) regions, as well as decent energy‐storage capabilities (16.4 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2), attributed to the presence of multiple redox centers. Furthermore, a hybrid electrochromic supercapacitor is also developed by combining DTPB‐MCP with V2O5 (DTPB‐MCP//V2O5), showcasing a significant optical contrast (47.6% at 750 nm and 14.5% at 1420 nm), an acceptable capacitance of 11.5 mF cm−2 with good rate performance, and impressive cycling stability (maintaining 81% of capacitance after 2750 charging/discharging cycles). In addition, >60% of electric energy can be reused to drive small household appliances during the bleaching process. The design principles outlined in this study offer valuable insights into the development of high‐performance dual‐band electrochromic energy‐storage materials, highlighting their potential applications in energy recovery and reuse.

Abstract:We have developed dual-functional electrochromic supercapacitors (ECSs) incorporating electrospun TiO2 nanofibers as an ion storage layer (ISL). The prepared ISL-ECSs exhibit excellent integrated electrochromic performances at low driving voltages due to high visible transparency and energy storage capabilities. This study describes direct electrospinning TiO2 on an FTO electrode and fabricating asymmetric electrochromic devices with viologen-based ion gel compositions. The electrospinning technique proved suitable for producing oxide nanostructures that facilitate efficient ion transport. The surface morphology of the fabricated nanoweb was analyzed using SEM and AFM images. The electrochromic performances were evaluated through cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements, and charge storage properties were examined by galvanostatic charge–discharge curves. The optimized dual-functional devices demonstrated a large transmittance contrast of up to 87 %, high coloration efficiency of 175.7 cm2/C, areal capacitance of 20.53 mF/cm2, and good charging-discharging cyclic stability. Furthermore, the practical feasibility of the ISL-ECSs was demonstrated by evaluating their ability to serve as a power source for illuminating an LED lamp. The findings suggest the potential application of ISL-ECSs for dual-functional smart windows, in which the color intensity visualizes the real-time energy storage status.

Abstract:Electrochromic smart windows offer an energy-saving route and a comfortable indoor environment for buildings due to their dynamic modulation of solar radiation. However, it is still challenging to facilely fabricate electrochromic films with large optical modulation in a wide wavelength band, neutral coloration, and long-term cycling stability. Herein, a type of in-situ grown NiCoO2 bimetallic oxide film on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates with interlaced nanoparticle/nanosheet structure is developed for electrochromism using a facile one-step solvothermal strategy. Owing to the unique structure, the NiCoO2 film delivers a neutral transparent-to-brown tinting, wide-band modulation (54.67% at 550 nm, 34.8% at 900 nm) in the visible-near-infrared region, fast switching speed (9/8.2 s), and high coloration efficiency (44.5 cm2/C at 550 nm). Moreover, the solvothermal growth approach enables good bonding of the NiCoO2 to the substrates, exhibiting excellent cycling stability of 2500 cycles. Additionally, a model of the smart window with the dual functions of electrochromism and energy storage was assembled using NiCoO2 film (electrochromic layer) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film (ion storage layer), realizing the visualization of the stored energy level through the color change. It is believed that this work would provide fundamental insights for the exploration of high-performance electrochemical materials and devices.

Abstract:Growing energy and environmental challenges have imposed higher requirements for the development of novel multifunctional energy storage and energy saving devices. Electrochromic devices having similar configuration and working mechanism with secondary batteries exhibit promising applications in dual-functional electrochromic-energy storage (ECES) devices. Electrochromic Prussian blue (PB) as typical battery cathodes are of great interest for ECES devices, yet suffer from poor stability and limited capacity. In this study, a transparent metal oxide (NiO nanosheets) interlayer was incorporated to enhance the structural stability and capacity of PB while offering enlarged optical modulation (T) and accelerated switching kinetics in the NiO/PB film. Impressively, the NiO/PB nanocomposite film exhibits a high areal capacity of 50 mAh m-2 and excellent electrochemical stability, simultaneously manifesting a large T (73.2% at 632.8 nm), fast switching time (tc = 1.4 s, tb = 2.6 s) and higher coloration efficiency (CE = 54.9 cm2 C-1), surpassing those of bare PB film (T = 69.1% at 632.8 nm, tc = 1.6 s, tb = 4.1 s, CE = 50.9 cm2 C-1). Finally, a prototype zinc anode-based electrochromic device assembled with NiO/PB nanocomposite film exhibits a self-bleaching function and T retention of up to 92% after 1000 cycles, and a 100 cm2 large area device was also demonstrated for high performance. Such a transparent metal oxide interlayer has enabled the construction of durable and fast-switching dual-functional zinc anode-based electrochromic devices and will inspire more efforts in designing novel multifunctional ECES devices.

Abstract:Electrochemically deposited thin films yield high uniformity, a property which is quite vital to in the context of electrochromic coatings and devices. Tungsten oxide and polyaniline are two such materials that show superior electrochromic properties individually. However, when combined into a solid‐state device structure, they yield a device where the efficiency increases multi‐folds. This device combination, being thoroughly characterized in the domain of electrochromic parameters such as high switching speeds, rich color contrast and stability, was found to be an excellent complimentary electrochromic pair. The unique property of the said device is that it can reduce the transmission of wavelengths in the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, providing an edge over other such combinations. Besides, a four‐digit value of coloration efficiency makes this device stand out in the family of its contemporaries. Overall, the hybrid nature of the device prompts it to be an excellent combination indicating its high performance in terms of increased endurance and heat isolation capacity. Abstract:Inclusion of charge storage properties to electrochromic devices has gained much interest and has evolved into a promising emerging energy related field due to multifunctional smart device application. Here, an organic-inorganic solid state asymmetric electrochromic supercapacitor device (ESCD) containing nano-CoTiO3 mixed poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) and WO3 as two electrodes has been designed to study electrochromic and supercapacitor properties. The electrochemical properties of CoTiO3 show a pseudocapacitive type charge storage capability, which has been utilized to enhance the electrochromic performance of ESCD with additional charge storage ability. The device shows charge storage property with fast charging and slow discharging giving very high coulombic efficiency with the specific capacitance of 6.4 mF/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2 current density. The device shows excellent electrochromic supercapacitive property with color contrast of ~ 50% and small switching time of ~1 s at 515 nm wavelength with excellent cyclic stability. The device exhibits the capability to cut near infrared (NIR) wavelength (700 nm and 850 nm), and has a potential application as heat filtering device. Thus, the addition of pseudocapacitive type material in electrochromic device enhances the capacitive performance along with electrochromic properties which makes electrochromic device more suitable for real life application.

Abstract:Amidst the mounting energy crisis and the pressing need to combat global warming, efficient energy utilization within buildings emerges as a critical imperative, with buildings currently contributing 40% to global energy consumption. Electrochromic devices (ECDs), particularly smart windows, have garnered significant attention as a sustainable solution, offering user-controlled light transmission. This manuscript explores the development of a complementary electrochromic device (CECD) utilizing WO 3 and NiO electrodes fabricated via pneumatic spray-pyrolysis. By optimizing deposition parameters, exceptional visibility modulation is achieved, surpassing previous reports related to CECD developed by spray pyrolysis method. The WO 3 cathode exhibits high optical modulations of 66% and 71.5% at 550 nm and 700 nm wavelengths, with rapid response and recovery times. Meanwhile, the NiO anode demonstrates complementary electrochromic properties with optical modulations of 51.5% and 44.5% at the same wavelengths. The resulting CECD, fabricated on a 5×5 cm 2 scale, showcases optical modulations of 67% and 59% at 550 nm and 700 nm, with remarkable stability over 400 cycles of switching. Furthermore, the device exhibits a high areal capacitance of 2.2 mF/cm 2 and coloration efficiencies of 81.59 cm 2 /C and 102.7 cm 2 /C at 550 nm and 700 nm, respectively. This study presents a facile and scalable fabrication approach for electrochromic electrodes, offering promising prospects for solution-based methods in electrochromic energy storage applications.

Abstract:Electrochromic (EC) smart windows are considered a profitable energy conservation technology in residential and commercial buildings. These windows can dynamically adjust their opacity or tint in response to external factors such as temperature, sunlight, or user input. External bias produces charged species capable of absorbing light in the electromagnetic spectrum, eventually regulating heating, cooling, and lighting inside buildings. Another fundamental property of EC devices is their ability to store charge from input currents. Here, three new classes of tetrabenzofluorene derivatives are reported, which show excellent EC properties in terms of EC contrast (40–50%), coloration efficiency (above 100 cm 2 C −1 ), and response time (5 s). Furthermore, EC devices function in three states: solid, solution, and gel states, and can also store the applied charge proficiently. The devices showed excellent cycling stability (300 cycles), capacity retention (95–100%), and moderately slow discharging; i.e. , the solid-state device produced an open circuit potential close to 1.2 V and discharged to 0.6 V in 2000 s. Moreover, the charging and discharging process can be monitored visually by the change in color of the EC material. The design strategy, synthesis, detailed optical, electrochromic, and spectroelectrochemical characterization, proof-of-concept smart window fabrication, and energy storage studies are presented.

Abstract:Significant advancement has been achieved in the domain of compact and smart electronic devices by combining electrochromic (EC) materials and energy storage technologies into an integrated electrochemical system. This groundbreaking advancement enables the simultaneous functioning and reciprocal improvement of both electrochromic and energy storage applications. Electrochromic materials play a crucial role in visually displaying the real-time energy levels in EC energy storage devices by changing their optical features in response to voltage. In this scenario, amorphous molybdenum-doped tungsten oxide (WMo) thin films were fabricated using a one-step electrodeposition process, and the influence of Mo-doping on allied materials characteristics was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis detected subtle changes in the diffraction patterns, whereas scanning electron microscopy unveiled variations in the film's structure. These variations encompassed the presence of porosity, clustering, densification, and the occurrence of cracks in the nanogranules within the film. The WMo-2 thin film, doped at a 2 wt%, displayed outstanding electrochromic energy storage capabilities. It efficiently accommodated lithium ions and showcased desirable bifunctional characteristics. The optimized electrode, denoted as WMo-2, delivered impressive electrochromic performance, boasting the highest optical modulation at 81.40 %, exceptional reversibility at 98 %, and a notably high coloring efficiency of 100.81 cm 2 /C. Moreover, the investigation into supercapacitive properties unveiled noteworthy findings, including an impressive areal capacitance of 63.27 mF/cm 2 at 0.1 mA/cm 2 , a substantial energy density of 9.89 μWh/cm 2 at a power density of 75 μWh/cm 2 , and an outstanding capacitive retention rate of 70.1 % observed over the course of 20,000 consecutive charge-discharge cycles. The multifunctional device is constructed employing optimized WMo and glass coated fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively. An evaluation was carried out to assess both the electrochromic and supercapacitive performance of the device. The fabricated WMo-2 device was illuminated red and green light-emitting diodes, highlighting its energy efficiency. These discoveries broaden the scope of potential applications for WO 3 materials in electrochromic energy storage devices, thus opening doors to the development of more compact and versatile intelligent electronic systems.

Abstract:For a better environmental sustainable development, the construction and new energy vehicle industries have paid more attention to electrochromic (EC) materials that can regulate light and heat to reduce energy use. We report a series of high-performance tungsten-niobium (W–Nb) bimetallic oxide films composed of nanowire/cluster directly grown on transparent conductive glasses by a solvothermal process. Large optical modulations in visible (Vis) (77.0%) and near-infrared (NIR) (79.7%) light regions, and high average coloration efficiency ( C E ‾ ) of 107.8 cm2·C−1 are achieved for the W–Nb bimetallic oxide films. The solvothermal preparation creates conditions for exploring the rules of the EC properties of W–Nb bimetallic oxide films with the atomic ratios of W to Nb. The EC properties of bimetallic oxides are designable by verifying their atomic ratios of W to Nb, which provides a theoretical support for searching high-performance bimetallic oxide EC films. In addition, we introduce real-time CE and C E ‾ besides the traditional maximum CE to evaluate the coloration performance of the EC films. This creates a foundation for the further research on the CE of EC materials and devices in the future.

Abstract:Dual‐band electrochromic (EC) smart windows, which can selectively modulate visible (VIS) and near‐infrared (NIR) light are widely regarded as one of the most attractive options to drastically reduce energy consumption in modern buildings. However, dual‐band EC smart windows still face many challenges such as weak modulation selectivity between VIS and NIR bands, low switching speed, poor durability, and high cost. Here, inspired by pine needles, a unique pine‐needle‐like (PNL) W18O49/TiO2 heterostructure is rationally constructed with W18O49 nanothorns (as branches) and TiO2 nanofibers (as backbones). The PNL‐W18O49/TiO2 heterostructures exhibit superior dual‐band EC performance in both VIS and NIR bands, which can block up to 81.4% of the VIS light at 633 nm and 91.3% of NIR at 1800 nm, and they also show extremely short bleaching/coloring time (0.9/1.2 s) and excellent stability (85% of capacity retention after 20 000 cycles) in a narrow potential window of −0.8 to 0.6 V. Besides, abundant patterned EC layers on a fluorine‐doped‐tin‐oxide‐coated conductive glass and flexible polyester conductive films can also be realized. This work provides an effective way for dual‐band EC materials’ design and their further development in smart windows and intelligent displays. The 3D pine‐needle‐like W18O49/TiO2 heterostructure network with increased specific surface area and more active sites exhibits a dual‐band electrochromic (EC) ability, fast response speed, and excellent cycling stability in a narrow potential window. Additionally, it is easy to be patterned with different masks which shows the potential in dual‐band EC smart windows and intelligent displays.

Abstract:In this study we realize functioning electrochromic devices based on colloidal niobium oxide nanocrystals which show dual-band electrochromic behavior, with spectral selectivity between near-infrared and visible wavelengths. Minimally coloring vanadium oxide counter electrodes allow for full electrochromic devices that embody the dual-band electrochromic behavior of the niobium oxide component. The devices are fabricated using solution processing on both glass and flexible substrates, demonstrating that our platform has potential for the development of low-cost dual-band electrochromic devices for dynamic solar control in a variety of form factors and applications.

Triarylamine-Based Polyimide Cofs for Achieving High Performance Ambipolar Multi-Color Electrochromic Energy-Storage Films

Abstract:Electrochromic energy storage materials that possess both electrochromic and electrochemical energy-storage properties have attracted significant attention for applications in visual energy-storage, energy-efficient windows, as well as displays. To fulfill their comprehensive applications, electrochromic energy-storage materials require specific characteristics, such as transparency, ambipolarity, multi-color capabilities, and high capacitance. Here, the polyimide covalent-organic framework based on triarylamine (PM-TPI and NT-TPI) COF films were grown successfully on FTO glass through solvothermal polycondensation, and exhibited crystallization, hierarchical porous structures, and ambipolar electrochemical redox activity. Notably, NT-TPI COF film displayed transparent bleached state, ambipolar electrochromism, multi-color (transparent, orange-red, cyan, gray), and high optical contrast. Due to their large specific surface area and efficient electron/ion transport ability, the NT-TPI COF film effectively controlled visible and near-infrared light, achieving optical contrasts of 49.8 % and 70.0 % at 420 and 850 nm, respectively. Moreover, the NT-TPI COF films showed promising electrochemical energy-storage properties and excellent charge-discharge rate performance, with a specific capacitance of 141.0 mAh/g. Additionally, NT-TPI COF/WO3-based ambipolar eclectrochromic energy-storage devices also exhibited high optical contrast from visible to near-infrared regions, and large capacitance. In summary, the NT-TPI COF film effectively combines the electrochromic and electrochemical energy-storage capabilities, making it a promising candidate for electrochromic energy-storage materials with transparency, ambipolarity, high optical contrast, multi-color functionality, and high specific capacitance.

Abstract:A one‐step hydrothermal method is proposed for synthesizing niobium‐doped titanium dioxide nanocrystals (NTO NCs), offering a scalable and organic ligand‐free approach to produce high‐quality, single‐component dual‐band electrochromic nanocrystals. The prepared NTO NC film exhibits good dual‐band electrochromic performance and high optical modulation of over 92%, holding great potential for large‐scale applications in energy‐efficient buildings and vehicles. Dual‐band electrochromic (DBEC) smart windows are an emerging energy‐saving technology, especially those constructed from single‐component DBEC materials as they offer an easy way to independently regulate visible (VIS) and near‐infrared (NIR) light. However, the current complicated organic ligand approach used to synthesize single‐component DBEC materials necessitates a post‐annealing treatment, which may severely compromise the scalability of DBEC smart windows. Herein, one organic ligand‐free process is developed to produce well‐controlled Nb‐doped anatase TiO2 nanocrystals (NTO NCs) followed by spraying on arbitrary substrates, giving NTO rigid or flexible films with good DBEC properties and a high optical modulation over 92%. A prototype of a 20 cm × 20 cm DBEC smart window is built. The simplicity and scalability of the synthesis and fabrication process make it a scalable approach to constructing large‐area electrochromic smart windows and foils, with promising applications in fields such as buildings and automobiles.
