Abstract:Data visualizations can play an active role in the process of scientific analysis and discovery, but the visualization design work cannot be accomplished by the scientist or designer alone, it has to be done through collaborations between scientists and designers. Because the scientific visualization process has its own set of challenges, due to not only the size and complexity of the dataset, but also the specialized knowledge of the subject matter required of the designers in order to create a thoroughly understandable interface and explorable space. We present an approach to support designing a scientific visualization. Our approach takes into account studies of visual representation, navigation and interaction. We have deployed a method of visualization design that enables designers to develop visualization tools for scientific discoveries. The usability of the tools was tested by user demonstration.
Why Change My Design: Explaining Poorly Constructed Visualization Designs with Explorable Explanations

Abstract:Although visualization tools are widely available and accessible, not everyone knows the best practices and guidelines for creating accurate and honest visual representations of data. Numerous books and articles have been written to expose the misleading potential of poorly constructed charts and teach people how to avoid being deceived by them or making their own mistakes. These readings use various rhetorical devices to explain the concepts to their readers. In our analysis of a collection of books, online materials, and a design workshop, we identified six common explanation methods. To assess the effectiveness of these methods, we conducted two crowdsourced studies (each with N=125) to evaluate their ability to teach and persuade people to make design changes. In addition to these existing methods, we brought in the idea of Explorable Explanations, which allows readers to experiment with different chart settings and observe how the changes are reflected in the visualization. While we did not find significant differences across explanation methods, the results of our experiments indicate that, following the exposure to the explanations, the participants showed improved proficiency in identifying deceptive charts and were more receptive to proposed alterations of the visualization design. We discovered that participants were willing to accept more than 60% of the proposed adjustments in the persuasiveness assessment. Nevertheless, we found no significant differences among different explanation methods in convincing participants to accept the modifications.

Abstract:Complex data visualization design projects often entail collaboration between people with different visualization-related skills. For example, many teams include both designers who create new visualization designs and developers who implement the resulting visualization software. We identify gaps between data characterization tools, visualization design tools, and development platforms that pose challenges for designer-developer teams working to create new data visualizations. While it is common for commercial interaction design tools to support collaboration between designers and developers, creating data visualizations poses several unique challenges that are not supported by current tools. In particular, visualization designers must characterize and build an understanding of the underlying data, then specify layouts, data encodings, and other data-driven parameters that will be robust across many different data values. In larger teams, designers must also clearly communicate these mappings and their dependencies to developers, clients, and other collaborators. We report observations and reflections from five large multidisciplinary visualization design projects and highlight six data-specific visualization challenges for design specification and handoff. These challenges include adapting to changing data, anticipating edge cases in data, understanding technical challenges, articulating data-dependent interactions, communicating data mappings, and preserving the integrity of data mappings across iterations. Based on these observations, we identify opportunities for future tools for prototyping, testing, and communicating data-driven designs, which might contribute to more successful and collaborative data visualization design.
Formulating or Fixating: Effects of Examples on Problem Solving Vary as a Function of Example Presentation Interface Design

Abstract:Interactive systems that facilitate exposure to examples can augment problem solving performance. However designers of such systems are often faced with many practical design decisions about how users will interact with examples, with little clear theoretical guidance. To understand how example interaction design choices affect whether/how people benefit from examples, we conducted an experiment where 182 participants worked on a controlled analog to an exploratory creativity task, with access to examples of varying diversity and presentation interfaces. Task performance was worse when examples were presented in a list, compared to contextualized in the exploration space or shown in a dropdown list. Example lists were associated with more fixation, whereas contextualized examples were associated with using examples to formulate a model of the problem space to guide exploration. We discuss implications of these results for a theoretical framework that maps design choices to fundamental psychological mechanisms of creative inspiration from examples.

Abstract:The use of digital examples plays a critical role in mobile UI design. Yet, it remains unclear how UX/UI designers manage (i.e., collect, archive, and utilize) examples to facilitate their design processes at different stages, and what possible challenges are imposed on the design of proper tools to support these practices. In this paper, we conduct a qualitative interview study with mobile UI/UX designers (12 experts and 12 novices), deriving the commonality in practices and analyzing possible differences across four design phases (Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver) and expertise. In brief, we find that there is more diverse and frequent use of examples in the Discover and Develop phases, and that experts take more diverse advantage of the information from examples compared to novices. We further identify the challenges faced by designers when using existing example management services, and propose potential design implications for the development of more supportive design tools in the future.

Abstract:The language for expressing comparisons is often complex and nuanced, making supporting natural language-based visual comparison a non-trivial task. To better understand how people reason about comparisons in natural language, we explore a design space of utterances for comparing data entities. We identified different parameters of comparison utterances that indicate what is being compared (i.e., data variables and attributes) as well as how these parameters are specified (i.e., explicitly or implicitly). We conducted a user study with sixteen data visualization experts and non-experts to investigate how they designed visualizations for comparisons in our design space. Based on the rich set of visualization techniques observed, we extracted key design features from the visualizations and synthesized them into a subset of sixteen representative visualization designs. We then conducted a follow-up study to validate user preferences for the sixteen representative visualizations corresponding to utterances in our design space. Findings from these studies suggest guidelines and future directions for designing natural language interfaces and recommendation tools to better support natural language comparisons in visual analytics.

Abstract:Professional roles for data visualization designers are growing in popularity, and interest in relationships between the academic research and professional practice communities is gaining traction. However, despite the potential for knowledge sharing between these communities, we have little understanding of the ways in which practitioners design in real-world, professional settings. Inquiry in numerous design disciplines indicates that practitioners approach complex situations in ways that are fundamentally different from those of researchers. In this work, I take a practice-led approach to understanding visualization design practice on its own terms. Twenty data visualization practitioners were interviewed and asked about their design process, including the steps they take, how they make decisions, and the methods they use. Findings suggest that practitioners do not follow highly systematic processes, but instead rely on situated forms of knowing and acting in which they draw from precedent and use methods and principles that are determined appropriate in the moment. These findings have implications for how visualization researchers understand and engage with practitioners, and how educators approach the training of future data visualization designers.

Explaining with Examples: Lessons Learned from Crowdsourced Introductory Description of Information Visualizations

Abstract:Data visualizations have been increasingly used in oral presentations to communicate data patterns to the general public. Clear verbal introductions of visualizations to explain how to interpret the visually encoded information are essential to convey the takeaways and avoid misunderstandings. We contribute a series of studies to investigate how to effectively introduce visualizations to the audience with varying degrees of visualization literacy. We begin with understanding how people are introducing visualizations. We crowdsource 110 introductions of visualizations and categorize them based on their content and structures. From these crowdsourced introductions, we identify different introduction strategies and generate a set of introductions for evaluation. We conduct experiments to systematically compare the effectiveness of different introduction strategies across four visualizations with 1,080 participants. We find that introductions explaining visual encodings with concrete examples are the most effective. Our study provides both qualitative and quantitative insights into how to construct effective verbal introductions of visualizations in presentations, inspiring further research in data storytelling.

Bridging the Divide: Unraveling the Knowledge Gap in Data Visualization Research and Practice

Abstract:Empirical research on perception and cognition has laid the foundation for visualization design, often yielding useful design guidelines for practitioners. However, it remains uncertain how well practitioners stay informed about such crucial visualization design knowledge. In this paper, we employed a mixed-method approach to explore the knowledge gap between visualization research and real-world design guidelines. We initially collected existing design guidelines from various sources and empirical studies from diverse publishing venues, analyzing their alignment and uncovering missing links and inconsistent knowledge. Subsequently, we conducted surveys and interviews with practitioners and researchers to gain further insights into their experiences and attitudes towards design guidelines and empirical studies, and their views on the knowledge gap between research and practice. Our findings highlight the similarities and differences in their perspectives and propose strategies to bridge the divide in visualization design knowledge.

Abstract:As the complexity and volume of datasets have increased along with the capabilities of modular, open-source, easy-to-implement, visualization tools, scientists' need for, and appreciation of, data visualization has risen too. Until recently, scientists thought of the "explanatory" graphics created at a research project's conclusion as "pretty pictures" needed only for journal publication or public outreach. The plots and displays produced during a research project - often intended only for experts - were thought of as a separate category, what we here call "exploratory" visualization. In this view, discovery comes from exploratory visualization, and explanatory visualization is just for communication. Our aim in this paper is to spark conversation amongst scientists, computer scientists, outreach professionals, educators, and graphics and perception experts about how to foster flexible data visualization practices that can facilitate discovery and communication at the same time. We present an example of a new finding made using the glue visualization environment to demonstrate how the border between explanatory and exploratory visualization is easily traversed. The linked-view principles as well as the actual code in glue are easily adapted to astronomy, medicine, and geographical information science - all fields where combining, visualizing, and analyzing several high-dimensional datasets yields insight. Whether or not scientists can use such a flexible "undisciplined" environment to its fullest potential without special training remains to be seen. We conclude with suggestions for improving the training of scientists in visualization practices, and of computer scientists in the iterative, non-workflow-like, ways in which modern science is carried out.

Abstract:Example galleries are often used to teach, document, and advertise visually-focused domain-specific languages and libraries, such as those producing visualizations, diagrams, or webpages. Despite their ubiquity, there is no consensus on the role of "example galleries", let alone what the best practices might be for their creation or curation. To understand gallery meaning and usage, we interviewed the creators (N=11) and users (N=9) of prominent visualization-adjacent tools. From these interviews we synthesized strategies and challenges for gallery curation and management (e.g. weighing the costs/benefits of adding new examples and trade-offs in richness vs ease of use), highlighted the differences between planned and actual gallery usage (e.g. opportunistic reuse vs search-engine optimization), and reflected on parts of the gallery design space not explored (e.g. highlighting the potential of tool assistance). We found that galleries are multi-faceted structures whose form and content are motivated to accommodate different usages--ranging from marketing material to test suite to extended documentation. This work offers a foundation for future support tools by characterizing gallery design and management, as well as by highlighting challenges and opportunities in the space (such as how more diverse galleries make reuse tasks simpler, but complicate upkeep).

What We Augment When We Augment Visualizations: A Design Elicitation Study of How We Visually Express Data Relationships

Abstract:Visual augmentations are commonly added to charts and graphs in order to convey richer and more nuanced information about relationships in the data. However, many design spaces proposed for categorizing augmentations were defined in a top-down manner, based on expert heuristics or from surveys of published visualizations. Less well understood are user preferences and intuitions when designing augmentations. In this paper, we address the gap by conducting a design elicitation study, where study participants were asked to draw the different ways they would visually express the meaning of ten different prompts. We obtained 364 drawings from the study, and identified the emergent categories of augmentations used by participants. The contributions of this paper are: (i) a user-defined design space of visualization augmentations, (ii) a repository of hand drawn augmentations made by study participants, and (iii) a discussion of insights into participant considerations, and connections between our study and existing design guidelines.

Abstract:Visual embellishments, as a form of non-linguistic rhetorical figures, are used to help convey abstract concepts or attract readers' attention. Creating data visualizations with appropriate and visually pleasing embellishments is challenging since this process largely depends on the experience and the aesthetic taste of designers. To help facilitate designers in the ideation and creation process, we propose a design space, VizBelle, based on the analysis of 361 classified visualizations from online sources. VizBelle consists of four dimensions, namely, communication goal to fit user intention, object to select the target area, strategy and technique to offer potential approaches. We further provide a website to present detailed explanations and examples of various techniques. We conducted a within-subject study with 20 professional and amateur design enthusiasts to evaluate the effectiveness of our design space. Results show that our design space is illuminating and useful for designers to create data visualizations with embellishments.

Abstract:A growing number of efforts aim to understand what people see when using a visualization. These efforts provide scientific grounding to complement design intuitions, leading to more effective visualization practice. However, published visualization research currently reflects a limited set of available methods for understanding how people process visualized data. Alternative methods from vision science offer a rich suite of tools for understanding visualizations, but no curated collection of these methods exists in either perception or visualization research. We introduce a design space of experimental methods for empirically investigating the perceptual processes involved with viewing data visualizations to ultimately inform visualization design guidelines. This paper provides a shared lexicon for facilitating experimental visualization research. We discuss popular experimental paradigms, adjustment types, response types, and dependent measures used in vision science research, rooting each in visualization examples. We then discuss the advantages and limitations of each technique. Researchers can use this design space to create innovative studies and progress scientific understanding of design choices and evaluations in visualization. We highlight a history of collaborative success between visualization and vision science research and advocate for a deeper relationship between the two fields that can elaborate on and extend the methodological design space for understanding visualization and vision.

Abstract:The visualization community has a rich history of reflecting upon flaws of visualization design, and research in this direction has remained lively until now. However, three main gaps still exist. First, most existing work characterizes design flaws from the perspective of researchers rather than the perspective of general users. Second, little work has been done to infer why these design flaws occur. Third, due to problems such as unclear terminology and ambiguous research scope, a better framework that systematically outlines various design flaws and helps distinguish different types of flaws is desired. To address the above gaps, this work investigated visualization design flaws through the lens of the public, constructed a framework to summarize and categorize the identified flaws, and explored why these flaws occur.

Abstract:There are numerous opportunities for engaging in research at the intersection of psychology and visualization. While most opportunities taken up by the VIS community will likely focus on the psychology of users, there are also opportunities for studying the psychology of designers. In this position paper, I argue the importance of studying design cognition as a necessary component of a holistic program of research on visualization psychology. I provide a brief overview of research on design cognition in other disciplines, and discuss opportunities for VIS to build an analogous research program. Doing so can lead to a stronger integration of research and design practice, can provide a better understanding of how to educate and train future designers, and will likely surface both challenges and opportunities for future research.
Streamlining Visualization Authoring in D3 Through User-Driven Templates

Abstract:D3 is arguably the most popular tool for implementing web based visualizations. Yet D3 has a steep learning curve that may hinder its adoption and continued use. To simplify the process of programming D3 visualizations, we must first understand the space of implementation practices that D3 users engage in. We present a qualitative analysis of 2500 D3 visualizations and their corresponding implementations. We find that 5 visualization types (Bar Charts, Geomaps, Line Charts, Scatterplots, and Force Directed Graphs) account for 80% of D3 visualizations found in our corpus. While implementation styles vary slightly across designs, the underlying code structure for all visualization types remains the same; presenting an opportunity for code reuse. Using our corpus of D3 examples, we synthesize reusable code templates for eight popular D3 visualization types and share them in our open source repository. Based on our results, we discuss design considerations for leveraging users' implementation patterns to reduce visualization design effort through design templates and auto-generated code recommendations.

Abstract:While visualizations play a crucial role in gaining insights from data, generating useful visualizations from a complex dataset is far from an easy task. Besides understanding the functionality provided by existing visualization libraries, generating the desired visualization also requires reshaping and aggregating the underlying data as well as composing different visual elements to achieve the intended visual narrative. This paper aims to simplify visualization tasks by automatically synthesizing the required program from simple visual sketches provided by the user. Specifically, given an input data set and a visual sketch that demonstrates how to visualize a very small subset of this data, our technique automatically generates a program that can be used to visualize the entire data set. Automating visualization poses several challenges. First, because many visualization tasks require data wrangling in addition to generating plots, we need to decompose the end-to-end synthesis task into two separate sub-problems. Second, because the intermediate specification that results from the decomposition is necessarily imprecise, this makes the data wrangling task particularly challenging in our context. In this paper, we address these problems by developing a new compositional visualization-by-example technique that (a) decomposes the end-to-end task into two different synthesis problems over different DSLs and (b) leverages bi-directional program analysis to deal with the complexity that arises from having an imprecise intermediate specification. We implemented our visualization-by-example algorithm and evaluate it on 83 visualization tasks collected from on-line forums and tutorials. Viser can solve 84% of these benchmarks within a 600 second time limit, and, for those tasks that can be solved, the desired visualization is among the top-5 generated by Viser in 70% of the cases.
