Abstract:Cryptographic security is of great importance. Biometrics play a vital role in modern authentication systems. Among all emerging biometrics, heart-based biometrics are promising because they are unique and hard to counterfeit. The current solutions on cardiac motion detection are either obtrusive or incapable of providing comprehensive cardiac motion information. To this end, we present Non-contact Cardiac Motion Sensing (NCMS), an end-to-end hardware and software solution, to sense and characterize the cardiac motion in a continuous, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. We evaluate the performance of NCMS and compare the cardiac motion cycle on human subjects. Experimental results indicate the feasibility of NCMS to detect the cardiac motion and show the concept of a new modality in emerging heart-based biometrics.

Abstract:Human cutaneous sensory organ is a highly evolved biosensor that is efficient, sensitive, selective, and adaptable. Recently, with the developing various materials and structures inspired by sensory organs, artificial cutaneous sensors have been widely studied. In this study, we demonstrated the acquisition of biophysical signals at one point on the body using a wearable all-gel-integrated multimodal sensor composed of four element sensors, inspired by the slow/rapid adapting functions of the skin sensory receptors. The gel-type sensors ensure flexibility, compactness, portability, adherence, and integrity. The wearable all-gel multimodal sensor was easily attached to the wrist and simultaneously gathered blood pressure (BP), electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG), and mechanomyogram (MMG) signals related to cardiac and muscle health. Human activity causes muscle contraction, which affects blood flow; therefore, the relationship between the muscle and heart is crucial for screening and predicting heart health. We monitored cardiac health by obtaining the two types of phase time differences (i.e., Δtbe: BP and ECG, Δtem: ECG and MMG) generated during muscle movement. The suggested multimodal sensor has potential applicability in monitoring biophysical conditions and diagnosing cardiac-related health problems.This article is protected by copyright. Doppler Cardiogram: A Remote Detection of Human Heart Activities

Abstract:Most medical instruments invented to measure human heart activities, such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), rely on contact electrodes. This causes discomfort and limits application scenarios. Remote acquisition of mu V-level bioelectrical cardiac signals through ECG measurement is theoretically challenging. Based on the analysis of magnetic resonance imaging to the volume change of human hearts, we found that a single radar sensor can be used to remotely detect a Doppler cardiogram (DCG) at a distance up to 1 m, by retrieving Doppler signals induced by combined atrial and ventricular motions conducted to the skin of the back chest. This DCG can provide all the timing information of the P-wave, QRS-waves, and T-wave carried in ECGs. The implemented miniature remote sensor could be an ideal portable instrument for patients, such as burn victims, extending application scenarios to personal healthcare, battlefield rescue, and others.
Accurate Extraction Of Heartbeat Intervals With Near-Field Coherent Sensing

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of vital signs including heart rates, blood pressures, respiration rates and breath efforts is critical for eHealth. Current approaches are limited in accuracy, convenience and sensing capabilities. Some methods such as electrocardiogram (ECG) is difficult for long-term applications due to the requirement of direct skin contact, which is uncomfortable to wearers, restricts body motion and disrupts circadian rhythms. Meanwhile accurate measurement of the inter-heartbeat timing features is important for wellness monitoring and human emotion studies. In this paper, we introduce a new method to modulate the external and internal mechanical motion of the wearer body directly onto multiplexed radio frequency (RF) signals by near-field coherent sensing (NCS). To minimize the deployment and maintenance cost of NCS vital-sign monitoring, passive RF identification (RFID) tags can be integrated into garments at the chest and wrist areas. The unique ID of each tag helps discriminate its signal against interferences from ambient interferences and other tags. NCS utilizes both amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic field to couple the motion, which significantly increases the signal quality in comparison to methods based solely on signal strength. The tag backscattering signal is then processed with spectral equalization to amplify the high frequency components to recover not only the waveform details originally submerged in the low-frequency components but also the sharp peaks for precise heartbeat intervals with improved peak detection certainty. The derived heartbeat interval shows improved stability in comparison with synchronous ECG.
Towards Integrated Noninvasive Personalization of Cardiac Electromechanics

Abstract:Personalization of cardiac functions and properties from subject-specific noninvasive clinical observations has been an active area with increasing clinical significance. The personalized cardiac information can quantitatively reflect the pathophysiology of an individual heart and further be used to assist heart diagnosis and treatment planning. Due to the electromechanically integrated nature of the heart, it is important to use an integrative approach to elucidate cardiac functions and properties of a specific individual. In this paper, we first introduce our earlier works on noninvasive recovery of cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac mechanics from body surface potential maps (BSPMs) and medical image sequences, respectively. Recognizing BSPMs complements medical image sequences in providing insights into an individual heart, we present works on mechanics-guided personalization of cardiac electrophysiology and electrophysiology-driven personalization of cardiac mechanics. Furthermore, working towards using an integrative approach to elucidate a subject-specific cardiac system, we propose an integrated framework for noninvasive personalization of cardiac electromechanics by combining an integrated cardiac physiome model and multi-modality observations (BSPMs and medical image sequences).
Sensorized T-Shirt with Intarsia-Knitted Conductive Textile Integrated Interconnections: Performance Assessment of Cardiac Measurements during Daily Living Activities

Abstract:The development of smart wearable solutions for monitoring daily life health status is increasingly popular, with chest straps and wristbands being predominant. This study introduces a novel sensorized T-shirt design with textile electrodes connected via a knitting technique to a Movesense device. We aimed to investigate the impact of stationary and movement actions on electrocardiography (ECG) and heart rate (HR) measurements using our sensorized T-shirt. Various activities of daily living (ADLs), including sitting, standing, walking, and mopping, were evaluated by comparing our T-shirt with a commercial chest strap. Our findings demonstrate measurement equivalence across ADLs, regardless of the sensing approach. By comparing ECG and HR measurements, we gained valuable insights into the influence of physical activity on sensorized T-shirt development for monitoring. Notably, the ECG signals exhibited remarkable similarity between our sensorized T-shirt and the chest strap, with closely aligned HR distributions during both stationary and movement actions. The average mean absolute percentage error was below 3%, affirming the agreement between the two solutions. These findings underscore the robustness and accuracy of our sensorized T-shirt in monitoring ECG and HR during diverse ADLs, emphasizing the significance of considering physical activity in cardiovascular monitoring research and the development of personal health applications.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading threats to human lives and its fatality rate still rises gradually year by year. Driven by the development of advanced information technologies, such as big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, remote/distributed cardiac healthcare is presenting a promising future. The traditional dynamic cardiac health monitoring method based on electrocardiogram (ECG) signals only has obvious deficiencies in comfortableness, informativeness, and accuracy under motion state. Therefore, a non-contact, compact, wearable, synchronous ECG and seismocardiogram (SCG) measuring system, based on a pair of capacitance coupling electrodes with ultra-high input impedance, and a high-resolution accelerometer were developed in this work, which can collect the ECG and SCG signals at the same point simultaneously through the multi-layer cloth. Meanwhile, the driven right leg electrode for ECG measurement is replaced by the AgCl fabric sewn to the outside of the cloth for realizing the total gel-free ECG measurement. Besides, synchronous ECG and SCG signals at multiple points on the chest surface were measured, and the recommended measuring points were given by their amplitude characteristics and the timing sequence correspondence analysis. Finally, the empirical mode decomposition algorithm was used to adaptively filter the motion artifacts within the ECG and SCG signals for measuring performance enhancement under motion states. The results demonstrate that the proposed non-contact, wearable cardiac health monitoring system can effectively collect ECG and SCG synchronously under various measuring situations.
Contactless seismocardiography via Gunnar-Farneback optical flow

Abstract:Seismocardiography (SCG) has gained significant attention due to its potential applications in monitoring cardiac health and diagnosing cardiovascular conditions. Conventional SCG methods rely on accelerometers attached to the chest, which can be uncomfortable or inconvenient. In recent years, researchers have explored non-contact methods to capture SCG signals, and one promising approach involves analyzing video recordings of the chest. In this study, we investigate a vision-based method based on the Gunnar-Farneback optical flow to extract SCG signals from the chest skin movements recorded by a smartphone camera. We compared the SCG signals extracted from the chest videos of four healthy subjects with those obtained from accelerometers and our previous method based on sticker tracking. Our results demonstrated that the vision-based SCG signals extracted by the proposed method closely resembled those from accelerometers and stickers, although these signals were captured from slightly different locations. The mean squared error between the vision-based SCG signals and accelerometer-based signals was found to be within a reasonable range, especially between signals on head-to-foot direction (0.2$<$MSE$<$1.5). Additionally, heart rates derived from the vision-based SCG exhibited good agreement with the gold-standard ECG measurements, with a mean difference of 0.8 bpm. These results indicate the potential of this non-invasive method in health monitoring and diagnostics.

Contactless multiscale measurement of cardiac motion using biomedical radar sensor

Abstract:Introduction: A contactless multiscale cardiac motion measurement method is proposed using impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar at a center frequency of 7.29 GHz. Motivation: Electrocardiograph (ECG), heart sound, and ultrasound are traditional state-of-the-art heartbeat signal measurement methods. These methods suffer from defects in contact and the existence of a blind information segment during the cardiogram measurement. Methods: Experiments and analyses were conducted using coarse-to-fine scale. Anteroposterior and along-the-arc measurements were taken from five healthy male subjects (aged 25-43) when lying down or prone. In every measurement, 10 seconds of breath-holding data were recorded with a radar 55 cm away from the body surface, while the ECG was monitored simultaneously as a reference. Results: Cardiac motion detection from the front was superior to that from the back in amplitude. In terms of radar detection angles, the best cardiac motion information was observed at a detection angle of 120°. Finally, in terms of cardiac motion cycles, all the ECG information, as well as short segments of cardiac motion details named blind ECGs segments, were detected. Significance: A contactless and multiscale cardiac motion detection method is proposed with no blind detection of segments during the entire cardiac cycle. This paves the way for a potentially significant method of fast and accurate cardiac disease assessment and diagnosis that exhibits promising application prospects in contactless online cardiac monitoring and in-home healthcare.
Contactless Electrocardiogram Monitoring with Millimeter Wave Radar

Abstract:The electrocardiogram (ECG) has always been an important biomedical test to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. Current approaches for ECG monitoring are based on body attached electrodes leading to uncomfortable user experience. Therefore, contactless ECG monitoring has drawn tremendous attention, which however remains unsolved. In fact, cardiac electrical-mechanical activities are coupling in a well-coordinated pattern. In this paper, we achieve contactless ECG monitoring by breaking the boundary between the cardiac mechanical and electrical activity. Specifically, we develop a millimeter-wave radar system to contactlessly measure cardiac mechanical activity and reconstruct ECG without any contact in. To measure the cardiac mechanical activity comprehensively, we propose a series of signal processing algorithms to extract 4D cardiac motions from radio frequency (RF) signals. Furthermore, we design a deep neural network to solve the cardiac related domain transformation problem and achieve end-to-end reconstruction mapping from RF input to the ECG output. The experimental results show that our contactless ECG measurements achieve timing accuracy of cardiac electrical events with median error below 14ms and morphology accuracy with median Pearson-Correlation of 90% and median Root-Mean-Square-Error of 0.081mv compared to the groudtruth ECG. These results indicate that the system enables the potential of contactless, continuous and accurate ECG monitoring.

A Preliminary Usability Study of Integrated Electronic Tattoo Surface Electromyography (semg) Sensors.

Abstract:Surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor measures the user's muscle activities by noninvasively placing electrodes on the surface of the user's skin. It has been widely used in monitoring various human movements. Recently a wearable and flexible epidermal sensor system called Electronic Tattoo (E-Tattoo) has been developed to enable intimate attachment of electrodes on the skin, improving long-term comfort. In order to make the E-Tattoo usable in monitoring muscle activities, it is always connected with a connector and signal processing blocks to collect and process the measured sEMG signals. We call it an integrated system. This paper investigates the usability of a prototype of the integrated system developed in the laboratory for monitoring muscle activities by testing its comfort with user experience surveys and comparing the quality of the sEMG signals by widely used performance metrics. Two typical movements, maximum voluntary isometric and non-isometric contractions, are considered for the experiments. Our preliminary results on five subjects demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed integrated system. This system showed a comparable signal quality for these two movements as the commercial product with a much better comfort feeling from the user. It is also interesting to note that this prototype shows a much better signal-to-motion artifact ratio (SMR), which reflects the ability to measure muscle activities during active movements, compared with the commercial product, showing the potential of using this integrated system in monitoring sEMGs during active and dynamic movements.
MERIT: Multimodal Wearable Vital Sign Waveform Monitoring

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and premature mortality worldwide, with occupational environments significantly influencing CVD risk, underscoring the need for effective cardiac monitoring and early warning systems. Existing methods of monitoring vital signs require subjects to remain stationary, which is impractical for daily monitoring as individuals are often in motion. To address this limitation, we propose MERIT, a multimodality-based wearable system designed for precise ECG waveform monitoring without movement restrictions. Daily activities, involving frequent arm movements, can significantly affect sensor data and complicate the reconstruction of accurate ECG signals. To mitigate motion impact and enhance ECG signal reconstruction, we introduce a deep independent component analysis (Deep-ICA) module and a multimodal fusion module. We conducted experiments with 15 subjects. Our results, compared with commercial wearable devices and existing methods, demonstrate that MERIT accurately reconstructs ECG waveforms during various office activities, offering a reliable solution for fine-grained cardiac monitoring in dynamic environments.

Abstract:Cardiovascular health is typically monitored by measuring blood pressure. Here we describe a wireless on-skin system consisting of synchronized sensors for chest electrocardiography and peripheral multispectral photoplethysmography for the continuous monitoring of metrics related to vascular resistance, cardiac output and blood-pressure regulation. We used data from the sensors to train a support-vector-machine model for the classification of haemodynamic states (resulting from exposure to heat or cold, physical exercise, breath holding, performing the Valsalva manoeuvre or from vasopressor administration during post-operative hypotension) that independently affect blood pressure, cardiac output and vascular resistance. The model classified the haemodynamic states on the basis of an unseen subset of sensor data for 10 healthy individuals, 20 patients with hypertension undergoing haemodynamic stimuli and 15 patients recovering from cardiac surgery, with an average precision of 0.878 and an overall area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.958. The multinodal sensor system may provide clinically actionable insights into haemodynamic states for use in the management of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract:A novel single-arm-worn ECG-based heart disease monitor is proposed in this paper. It is of a potential to provide continuous monitoring of different ECG metrics, and in this study, we focus on the duration of the QRS complex which is the central of an ECG heartbeat. Firstly, to avoid the low wearability induced by traditional chest-ECG or two-wrist ECG, we apply a highly wearable non-standard single-arm-ECG configuration. Afterwards, to estimate the QRS duration from noisy and weak non-standard single-arm-ECG, we propose a new three-stage machine learning framework. It firstly identifies heartbeat locations (R peaks) by a support vector machine classifier, then uses a dynamic time warping approach to locate QRS patterns that are similar to a template learned by a K-medoids clustering method, and finally learns to use the arm-ECG-based QRS duration estimates to predict a standard chest-ECG-based QRS duration trend. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel system, based on data collected from five subjects using our customized hardware prototype and the non-standard signal-arm-ECG configuration. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the a single-arm-worn ECG-based daily heart disease monitor, using advanced signal sensing and machine learning techniques.
Deep Arm/Ear-ECG Image Learning for Highly Wearable Biometric Human Identification

Abstract:In this study, to advance smart health applications which have increasing security/privacy requirements, we propose a novel highly wearable ECG-based user identification system, empowered by both non-standard convenient ECG lead configurations and deep learning techniques. Specifically, to achieve a super wearability, we suggest situating all the ECG electrodes on the left upper-arm, or behind the ears, and successfully obtain weak but distinguishable ECG waveforms. Afterwards, to identify individuals from weak ECG, we further present a two-stage framework, including ECG imaging and deep feature learning/identification. In the former stage, the ECG heartbeats are projected to a 2D state space, to reveal heartbeats' trajectory behaviors and produce 2D images by a split-then-hit method. In the second stage, a convolutional neural network is introduced to automatically learn the intricate patterns directly from the ECG image representations without heavy feature engineering, and then perform user identification. Experimental results on two acquired datasets using our wearable prototype, show a promising identification rate of 98.4% (single-arm-ECG) and 91.1% (ear-ECG), respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first study on the feasibility of using single-arm-ECG/ear-ECG for user identification purpose, which is expected to contribute to pervasive ECG-based user identification in smart health applications.
A novel machine learning-enabled framework for instantaneous heart rate monitoring from motion-artifact-corrupted electrocardiogram signals

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel machine learning-enabled framework to robustly monitor the instantaneous heart rate (IHR) from wrist-electrocardiography (ECG) signals continuously and heavily corrupted by random motion artifacts in wearable applications. The framework includes two stages, i.e. heartbeat identification and refinement, respectively. In the first stage, an adaptive threshold-based auto-segmentation approach is proposed to select out heartbeat candidates, including the real heartbeats and large amounts of motion-artifact-induced interferential spikes. Then twenty-six features are extracted for each candidate in time, spatial, frequency and statistical domains, and evaluated by a spare support vector machine (SVM) to select out ten critical features which can effectively reveal residual heartbeat information. Afterwards, an SVM model, created on the training data using the selected feature set, is applied to find high confident heartbeats from a large number of candidates in the testing data. In the second stage, the SVM classification results are further refined by two steps: (1) a rule-based classifier with two attributes named 'continuity check' and 'locality check' for outlier (false positives) removal, and (2) a heartbeat interpolation strategy for missing-heartbeat (false negatives) recovery. The framework is evaluated on a wrist-ECG dataset acquired by a semi-customized platform and also a public dataset. When the signal-to-noise ratio is as low as -7 dB, the mean absolute error of the estimated IHR is 1.4 beats per minute (BPM) and the root mean square error is 6.5 BPM. The proposed framework greatly outperforms well-established approaches, demonstrating that it can effectively identify the heartbeats from ECG signals continuously corrupted by intense motion artifacts and robustly estimate the IHR. This study is expected to contribute to robust long-term wearable IHR monitoring for pervasive heart health and fitness management.

Abstract:Advances in wearable bioelectronics interfacing directly with skin offer important tools for non‐invasive measurements of physiological parameters. However, wearable monitoring devices majorly conduct static sensing to avoid signal disturbance and unreliable contact with the skin. Dynamic multiparameter sensing is challenging even with the advanced flexible skin patches. This epidermal electronics system with self‐adhesive conductive electrodes to supply stable skin contact and a unique synchronous correlation peak extraction (SCPE) algorithm to minimize motion artifacts in the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals. The skin patch system can simultaneously and precisely monitor electrocardiogram (ECG), PPG, body temperature, and acceleration on chests under daily activities. The low latency between the ECG and the PPG signals enables the SCPE algorithm that leads to reduced errors in deduced heart rates and improved performance in oxygen level determination than conventional adaptive filtering and wavelet transformation approaches. Dynamic multiparameter recording over 24 hours by the system can reflect the circadian patterns of the wearers with low disturbance from motion artifacts. Real-Time Wrist Motion Decoding with High Framerate Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT)

Abstract:Human wrist motion decoding with a biological-signal-based interface is a key technique in the upper-limb exoskeleton and prosthesis control. One critical issue in this field is achieving high recognition precision and fast time response while against external disturbances of sensor re-wearing. In this study, we proposed a high-framerate Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) system combined with an adaptive recognition algorithm for real-time wrist kinematics decoding. The high-framerate EIT system was developed by a parallel stimulation-measurement sequence, and the sampling rate was as high as 104 Hz. Compared to the most widely used myoelectric techniques, the EIT-based interface can provide extra deep muscular spatial information with similar surface electrodes. It greatly benefited the subsequent recognition algorithms, in which the key EIT regions indicating muscle morphology kept consistent after an arbitrary sensor re-donning. The designed adaptive algorithm achieved equally high performance with an automatic update of the classifier mean values with a fast self-operated calibration process. We validated the approach on 12 subjects with a 2-dimensional Fitts' law test. The wrist gestures and joint angles were mapped to the direction and speed of the cursor movement, respectively. The average throughputs (TPs) of Fitts' law tests were 1.0269 ± 0.0971 bits/s and 1.0095 ± 0.0931 bits/s without and with sensor re-donning, respectively, which were comparable to the TPs of sEMG-based studies. The results showed the promise of the EIT-based interface on real-time human motion intent recognition. Future endeavors are worth being paid in this direction for more complicated robotic tasks.
A Heart Beat Rate Detection Framework Using Multiple Nanofiber Sensor Signals

Abstract:Although electrocardiogram (ECG) is one standard way for monitoring heart beat rate, there are of great interests in exploring other types of biophysical signals. A novel type of nanofiber (NF) sensor signals, as a potential alternative choice to ECG signals for heart beat monitoring, are investigated in this paper. To get the heart beat signal, three nano sensors are deployed at the wrist. However, detecting the heart beat rate (HBR) directly from the raw data is challenging because the signals of interest are masked by different types of noise. To address this concern, a two-step framework based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and multiset canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) is proposed to extract the interesting signals. Further, a specific HBR detection method is presented based on peak detection and peak filtering. We apply the proposed framework to the real data collected from one subject performing 8 tasks, and the results demonstrate its effectiveness and potential in real applications.
