Abstract:Due to the important role of knowledge and innovation in the development of organisations or economies, these issues continue to receive considerable attention from practitioners and researchers. Knowledge and innovation are closely related concepts. Without proper knowledge management (KM), it is difficult to design and implement changes, while, on the other hand, innovation creates a demand for new areas of knowledge and continuously develops it. The main objective of this paper is to identify the leading challenges in knowledge management and innovation, by exploring the key themes, their connections and the latest research trends in this area. Using the SCOPUS citation database, publications were reviewed to answer the following questions: (RQ1) How has the perspective of academic research addressing both knowledge management and innovation evolved over the last twenty years? and (RQ2) What are the leading research areas and new trends in research simultaneously addressing knowledge management and innovation? The analysis covered the years 2003-2023. The collected data was pre-selected and then, based on the frequency of co-occurrence of key terms, mapping was performed and keywords were extracted using VOSviewer software. In the years under review, there has been an increase in the number of publications dealing with the topic of knowledge management, including those linked to innovation. Publications in this field are mainly concentrated in three research areas: Business, Management and Accounting, Computer Science and Engineering. Most studies come from China. The dominant research unit in this research area, according to the affiliation of the researchers, is LUT University. Issues such as knowledge sharing and transfer of knowledge, learning organisations, competition or information management among others, continue to be of interest to researchers. Among the most recent trends, research is dominated by: green innovations, mediating roles, big data and covid-19. The study helps to understand the challenges that have arisen for research in the analyzed area in the last two decades. It can provide a valuable study and a guide for identifying available and future research directions on knowledge management and innovation.

Abstract:The discourse surrounding sustainability, particularly in the urban environment, has gained considerable momentum in recent years. The concept of a smart city epitomises the integration of innovative technological solutions with community-centred approaches, thereby laying the groundwork for a sustainable lifestyle. One of the crucial components of this integration is the effective and innovative management of waste. The aim of this article was to classify scientific research pertaining to waste management within the context of smart city issues, and to identify emerging directions for future research. A systematic literature review, based on a bibliometric analysis of articles included in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, was conducted for this study. The purpose of such a systematic review is to identify, integrate, and evaluate research on a selected topic, using clearly defined criteria. The research query included: TITLE-ABS-KEY ("smart city" AND (waste OR garbage OR trash OR rubbish)) in the case of Scopus, and TS = ("smart city" AND (waste OR garbage OR trash OR rubbish)) in the case of the Web of Science database. A total of 1768 publication records qualified for the analysis. This study presents an investigation into the current and forthcoming directions of waste management in smart cities, synthesising the latest advancements and methods. The findings outline specific future research directions encompassing technological advancement, special waste challenges, digitisation, energy recovery, transportation, community engagement, policy development, security, novel frameworks, economic and environmental impact assessment, and global implications. These insights reflect a multifaceted approach, advocating a technology-driven perspective that is integral to urban sustainability and quality of life. The study's findings provide practical avenues for cities to enhance waste management through modern technologies, promoting efficient systems and contributing to sustainable urban living and the circular economy. The insights are vital for policymakers and industry leaders globally, supporting the creation of universal standards and policies, thereby fostering comprehensive waste management systems aligned with global sustainability objectives.

Abstract:The effective treatment of waste to be used as a resource in future has a major role in achieving environmental sustainability and moving towards circular economy. The current research is aimed to provide in-depth detail regarding prominent trends and research themes, evolution, future research orientation, main characteristics, and mapping of research publications on waste management, technological innovation in circular economy domain from the year 2000 to 2021. Different analyses including text mining and bibliometric and content analyses were applied to answer the research question and provide the details on aforementioned variables. From the bibliometric analyses, a total of 1118 articles were drawn out from the Scopus database to conceptualize the core body of research. As a result, the following themes were identified: electronic waste, circular economy transition, plastic waste, bio-based waste management, lifecycle assessment, and ecological impacts, and construction and demolition waste management. The highlighted features, future research orientation, and prominent research perspective can provide guideline for future research to enrich the literature through conducting studies on provided research directions and help lead waste management and technological innovation policymakers, professionals, and practitioners in moving towards circular transition.

Abstract:The expanding worldwide trash challenge, caused by urbanization, rising populations, and financial growth, necessitates innovative and long-term waste management techniques. This article investigates several sophisticated techniques and standards of excellence in the management of green waste, with a focus on the use of cutting-edge technologies, community involvement, and comprehensive policy frameworks. It highlights the waste hierarchy, circular economy, and life cycle thinking as essential components to efficient waste management. Developments in technology such as modern waste-to- energy technologies, sophisticated recycling methods, and smart waste management systems are assessed for their potential contribution to sustainability. The paper also includes case studies from San Francisco, Freiburg, and Kami katsu, which demonstrate successful environmentally conscious waste practices. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of legislative frameworks, public-private partnerships, and community involvement in achieving sustainable waste management. Regardless of constant obstacles such as affordability, technological boundaries, behavioral barriers, and regulatory inconsistencies, the article concludes that a strategic combination of innovative technologies, strong policies, and active involvement by the public is essential for addressing the worldwide waste disaster and obtaining a cleaner happier more likely and more sustainable future.

Abstract:This study aims to conduct a scientometric analysis to identify emerging trends in waste management strategies over the last three decades (1994–2003, 2004–2013, and 2014–2023). Integrated application of bibliometric analysis (VOSviewer) and Science Mapping Analysis Tool (SciMAT) facilitates the tracing pattern of potential research themes, influential authors, significant outcomes, and relevant contributing factors over this specified period. Four prominent themes of the strategic diagram: (1) Management Systems, (2) Building Information Modeling (BIM), (3) Polymer, and (4) Eco-Neighbourhood have been revealed for further exploration and improvement. Clustering algorithms categorize the principle theme into further sub-components of resource recycling, project or building life cycle, energy analysis, environmental cost, waste plastic, geopolymer, and others to provide a nuanced understanding of interconnected themes. A pragmatic application of this analysis minimizes waste generation, optimizes resource recovery, and mitigates waste disposal's environmental impacts and health consequences. This review article's evidence-based framework assesses research dynamics, highlights potential sectors for exploration, and encourages innovation and collaboration among policymakers and the scientific community to facilitate informed and sustainable decision-making. However, valuable insights from alternative sources such as technical reports and non-English scholarly articles have not been considered for achieving practical applications.

Abstract:Solid waste management (SWM) is critical for the sustainable development of the global economy and society, and it should involve the whole life cycle process of waste generation and treatment. Bibliometric and scientific knowledge mapping was applied in this study to systematically review 4239 published papers (1991–2022) in the Web of Science (WOS) core database to obtain an overview of the current knowledge network and the status of waste management research, as well as summarizing the hotspots and frontiers for future research. The results show that: (1) Since the 21st century, SWM research has received extensive attention. During the study period, the number of publications increasing from 7 to 552 per year over the course of the century. An important turning point was reached in 2015, which was followed by a rapid increase in the number of articles published, reaching a peak in 2021. (2) Well known universities in China and around the world were the main sites of knowledge generation, and the cooperative research networks between these institutions resulted in numerous publications. However, international cooperation in this field was still insufficient. (3) Solid waste management research is an interdisciplinary and diversified field, among which integrated waste management and environmental economic assessment, impact mechanisms and residents' behavior, and environmental change and sustainable development were the main research topics. (4) Solid waste management research could be organized into 30 clusters, which were further classified into initial, development, and leapfrog stages based on a timeline analysis of the literature co-citation network. Combining the keyword burst detection results and research hotspots, research frontiers were summarized for four periods, which could be used to describe the phase upgrade of SWM research. Finally, future research directions were proposed in terms of their perspectives, content, methods, and context, including SWM based on the "order-emotion" framework; consideration of multi-stakeholder games; adoption of new paradigms (e.g., machine learning and artificial intelligence); and consideration of social and environmental changes and externality costs to build a healthier and more sustainable integrated management system.

Abstract:Due to the recent boom in urbanisation, economy, and global population, the amount of waste generated worldwide has increased tremendously. The World Bank estimates that global waste generation is expected to increase 70% by 2050. Disposal of waste is already a major concern as it poses risks to the environment, human health, and economy. To tackle this issue and maximise potential environmental, economic, and social benefits, waste valorisation - a value-adding process for waste materials - has emerged as a sustainable and efficient strategy. The major objective of waste valorisation is to transit to a circular economy and maximally alleviate hazardous impacts of waste. This review conducts bibliometric analysis to construct a co-occurrence network of research themes related to management of five major waste streams (i.e., food, agricultural, textile, plastics, and electronics). Modern valorisation technologies and their efficiencies are highlighted. Moreover, insights into improvement of waste valorisation technologies are presented in terms of sustainable environmental, social, and economic performances. This review summarises highlighting factors that impede widespread adoption of waste valorisation, such as technology lock-in, optimisation for local conditions, unfavourable regulations, and low investments, with the aim of devising solutions that explore practical, feasible, and sustainable means of waste valorisation.

Abstract:Waste-to-energy (WtE) technology is at the forefront of low-carbon municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment. MSW has been favoured by researchers in recent years due to its high potential to dispose of resources with WtE technology, which contributes to the carbon neutrality goal. However, there is a lack of research that integrates MSW WtE treatment from a global perspective and explores its future direction. Bibliometric methods are widely used because of their advantages in qualitative and quantitative literature information analysis. A comprehensive search was conducted in the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database, covering the period from 1990-2022, resulting in the collection of 702 articles. Subsequently, bibliometric software such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix, were jointly employed for co-occurrence, co-citation, and cluster analyses, providing an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the research hotspots and development trends of WtE technology for MSW treatment. The research findings indicate a rapid growth in studies on carbon emission reduction through WtE technology for MSW treatment since 2015, with these related articles accounting for 50% of articles. Globally, China, the United States, Italy, and other countries were active research regions, with Chinese research institutions making the largest contributions. However, contributions from developing countries are limited. Furthermore, this study systematically elaborates on the research hotspots in this field. Finally, this study identified some frontier research hotspots and directions. Research on WtE technology primarily focuses on technological methods and policy management, particularly from the carbon neutrality perspective, emphasis WtE technology sustainability in reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality goals. Promoting the use of assisted decision-making models in the MSW management process, and focusing on the conversion of food waste into valuable energy. It is hoped that these research directions will provide new ideas for the balanced and rapid development of WtE technology.

Abstract:Inadequate municipal solid waste (MSW) management threatens public health and the environment. The waste-to-energy (WtE) route allows the production of electricity, heat, and other valuable chemical products. WtE consists of incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and some emerging technologies. This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to conduct a bibliometric analysis of WtE technologies for MSW management research. Scopus-indexed articles were examined between 1971 and 2023. Four periods were defined and analyzed in terms of their most significant results. In addition, the most pertinent journals (Waste Management, Chemosphere, and Waste Management & Research) ranked first, second, and third, respectively. Moreover, the top contributor countries include one in America (the United States), three in Asia (China, Japan, and India), and five in Europe (Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). Throughout a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case study, the environmental performance of gasification and incineration were compared as relevant technologies for treating MSW were contrasted. Gasification excelled in seven environmental parameters, suggesting that developing strategies for MSW gasification on a commercial scale should prioritize this aspect. Finally, the energy potential was assessed, which provided valuable information on the societal benefits of WtE technologies in various sectors, such as education, health, and electromobility. Under their respective contexts, stakeholders should enhance MSW sorting policies, pretreatment methods, and emerging valorization options. The growing global interest in WtE requires a social, environmental, and economic evaluation before implementation.

Abstract:Companies have adopted green marketing and marketing strategies to position themselves in consumer preferences and combat the problem of accelerated consumption of resources that has compromised the planet’s regenerative capacity, where the circular economy emerges as a solution to move towards responsible production and consumption patterns. From waste recycling marketing strategies, a descriptive analysis of 120 documents from the SCOPUS database was carried out using bibliometric techniques to know the existing state of the art for the period 1977–2021. The results indicate that the annual scientific production increased in the last ten years by over 200% for 2019, highlighting the USA, China, UK, Germany, and India, and Mexico is in position 22. The conceptual and trend analysis points out the relationship between marketing, waste management, commercialization, recycling, sustainable development, and circular economy, topics that have deepened research in the last 5 years due to the SDGs. Through intellectual analysis, schools of thought were identified, highlighting Chen, Wang, Zhang and Liu, Lu, and White as the most influential and connected with other authors. The results show no link between the study areas, but rather that they are developed in isolation, evidencing an area of opportunity to work on marketing strategies for waste recycling, where companies adopt circular economy objectives, obtaining an advantage. Competitive position and position in the market by offering products from a valorization that the consumer prefers.

Abstract:Biorefineries provide a platform for different industries to produce multiple bio-products enhancing the economic value of the system. The production of these biorefineries has led to an increase in the generation of biowaste. To minimize the risk of environmental pollution, numerous studies have focused on a variety of strategies to mitigate these concerns reflected in the vast amount of literature written on this topic. This paper aims to systematically analyze and review the enormous body of scientific literature in the biowaste and biorefinery field for establishing an understanding and providing a direction for future works. A bibliometric analysis is first performed using the CorTexT Manager platform on a corpus of 1488 articles written on the topic of biowaste. Popular and emerging topics are determined using a terms extraction algorithm. A contingency matrix is then created to study the correlation of scientific journals and key topics from this field. Then, the connection and evolution of these terms were analyzed using network mapping, to determine relationships among key terms and analyze notable trends in this research field. Finally, a critical review of articles was presented across three main categories of biowaste management such as mitigation, sustainable utilization, and cleaner disposal from the perspective of the biorefinery concept. Operational and technological challenges are identified for the integration of anaerobic digestion in biorefineries, especially in developing nations. Moreover, logistical challenges in the biorefinery supply-chain are established based on the economics and collection aspect of handling biowaste.

A thorough overview of the literature on waste recycling in the circular economy: current practices and future perspectives

Abstract:To develop a circular economy (CE) and protect the environment, waste recycling (WR) is crucial. This study examines WR research conducted over the past two decades to identify the most significant advancements and promising areas for future research. The following challenges were handled through text mining, content, and bibliometrics analysis: How has CE influenced the evolution of WR research? What are the CE's most important WR research trends and themes? What directions could future research on WR take regarding the CE transition? Using 1118 articles from the Scopus database journal, bibliometric networks were made and analyzed. Hence, five critical CE-related problems needing further research were recognized: waste recycling is the first cluster, followed by technology, the CE transformation, plastic waste, and waste management (WM). Examining WM and inclusive waste reduction practices and their distinct highlight patterns may impact future research fields and serve as a transitional tool to CE (which aims to minimize waste generation). Forthcoming research targets contain waste reduction and incorporation of WR into the CE framework.

Abstract:Overflowing garbage bins and unnecessary truck visits to collect waste have always been core issues of sustainability and maintaining a green environment. In the recent past, a transition has been observed in waste management towards a better environment and the achievement of sustainability goals. Companies are not only focused on producing less but also transforming waste into energy and reusable products. This transition process needs to evolve through sustainable solutions and innovative marketing initiatives that increase awareness and education among end users. This study used a systematic literature review protocol to identify and review the available research on sustainable waste-management solutions, innovative marketing initiatives, and a proposed conceptual model. It analyzed the latest literature from 1976 to 2022 to assess waste-management trends using the Web of Sciences and Scopus databases. To evaluate the practical perspective, this study analyzed ten waste-management companies offering services in the USA, the UK, Korea, Finland, Ireland, Turkey, Brazil, Slovakia, Portugal, Denmark, and Canada to assess their technological and marketing development for the creation of a better future. It was found that Ecube, Enevo, smart bins, Compology, Bigbelly, Sensoneo, Citibrain, ACO recycling, Evrek, Rico, and BrighterBins focus more on technology and less on user awareness and marketing. There is minimal focus on education and empowerment of end users. Our study's findings guide academics, practitioners, and policymakers to apply ambidextrousness in energy innovation, particularly in the waste-management sector. By implementing sustainable and innovative solutions, companies can not only reduce waste products, but they can also recover, recycle, and better dispose of the waste. However, to do so, companies also need to educate end users.

Abstract:Electronic waste (e-waste) has been widely studied by scholars all over the world, but the research topics and development trends in this field are still unclear. This study aimed to explore the status quo, hot topics, and future prospects in the field of e-waste. Data of publications were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection. We used CiteSpace V, Histcite, and VOSviewer to analyze literature information. A total of 2800 papers in e-waste research were identified, and the number of publications increased rapidly after 2004. Six thousand five hundred seventy-three authors participated in the e-waste research, but 70.01% of the authors published only 1 article. The most productive country in this field was China (1146 publications), and the most productive institution was the Chinese Academy of Sciences (370 publications). The Waste Management (225 publications) was the most productive journal, and Environment Science & Technology (9704 co-citations) was the most co-cited journal. The main hot topics in e-waste field were management and recycling of e-waste in developing countries, health risk assessment after exposure to organic pollutants, degradation and recovery of waste metal materials, and impact of heavy metals on children’s health. The frontier topic was degradation.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) requires significant planning and objective definitions of each of its stages. Waste collection and transportation stages are of utmost importance, and they represent a significant cost of the process. In this context, a systematic study using bibliometric analysis was conducted, seeking to identify and understand the applied methodologies and tools, as well as which parameters and approaches are employed to optimize the solid urban waste collection system. The analysis portfolio features 12 publications, focusing on the optimization of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection systems, mostly with the aim of optimizing routes for transporting waste from the collection points to the final destination, with the goal of reducing the costs of this stage. Results highlight how these studies only consider as optimization criteria the reduction of the travelled distance and lack other dimensions (such as an environmental impact perspective). Some of the studies demonstrate the vital role of technology in optimizing the waste collection operation, from the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to using sensors or smart bins. Future research efforts should widen the scope of what is considered in optimizing the waste collection system.

Abstract:The unregulated discharge reams of food waste (FW) causes severe resource loss and environmental pollution. In the present study, a bibliometric analysis was used for research activities and tendencies of food waste from 1991 to 2015. The results indicated that the amount of FW research continually grew by the years, and the number of publications rose significantly from 2012. Bioresource Technology and Waste Management were the two most frequently published journals in the field of FW research. China took a leading position and had a high h-index (38) out of 94 countries/territories, followed by the USA and South Korea. Presently, anaerobic digestion for methane and dark fermentation for hydrogen production are the mainstream techniques in FW disposal. Lactic and ethanol fermentation from FW received more and more attention in recent years. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was an ever-increasingly popular evaluation method for FW-related research. Abstract:In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and the pervasive presence of the electronics industry, electronic waste (E-waste) has become a prominent global concern. This study utilizes a rigorous bibliometric analysis to thoroughly investigate the extensive body of literature in this field, shedding light on the current state of research and development in E-waste recycling. The study dissects and visualizes research trends, trajectories, and advancements. It meticulously examines a dataset comprising 3267 records extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection, specifically the Science Citation Index Expanded. The analysis highlights China’s pivotal role in E-waste recycling research, contributing 41% of the total research papers in this field. Additionally, the British journal ‘Waste Management’ emerges as a standout among academic publications, with an impressive count of 241 articles, constituting 7.38% of the entire corpus. Notably, Zeng, X.L., emerges as the most co-cited author, underscoring their significant influence and contributions to the scholarly discourse. Tracing the evolution of E-waste recycling research from 1990 to 2022, the study uncovers the field’s inception in 1993 when the first research paper on this subject was published. This nascent domain has since experienced exponential growth, culminating in an impressive 408 papers published in 2022. The research identifies and distills three compelling research trends that have captured significant attention within the E-waste recycling domain. Firstly, it highlights the paramount concern regarding the environmental impact of organic pollutants from E-waste, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Secondly, it delves into the intricate issue of managing and recycling E-waste in developing countries, where unique challenges necessitate innovative approaches. Lastly, the analysis underscores the growing interest in recovering and recycling materials from discarded electronic devices, highlighting the imperative necessity of harnessing the valuable resources within E-waste. In synthesis, this research not only provides an overview of the current landscape of E-waste recycling but also offers a clear path forward for future studies and interventions. It serves as a critical guide for addressing the environmental and socio-economic repercussions of E-waste, ultimately fostering a more sustainable and economically viable future.

Abstract:This review explores the rising research field of sustainable development in combination with innovation. The basis to reach sustainable development is innovation, which plays a role on all dimensions, be it economically, socially, or environmentally. In this review, science mapping techniques were employed in order to asses 1690 journal articles extracted from the SCOPUS database concerned with innovation in sustainable development (ISD). The main objective of the review is to reveal the size, growth trajectory, and geographic distribution of the ISD literature. Furthermore, the aim is to assess the key publishing journals, authors, and documents as well as to uncover the intellectual structure and topical foci of the research domain. The review acknowledges a reasonable body of knowledge spanning nearly three decades. A result of this review is that the sustainable development literature emerged from the environmental research field and that the topical foci of the domain is closely aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. This review is a first attempt to systematically analyze the literature on innovation in sustainable development (ISD) by applying science mapping techniques such as bibliometric analysis. It shall give guidance for future research and demonstrate the practical implications.

Characterization of top 100 researches on e-waste based on bibliometric analysis

Abstract:With rapid development of energy, information, and communication technology, e-waste problem has become one of the global issues to be settled urgently. The main features on publication years, journals, countries and institutions, authors, keywords, and content types of the 100 most-cited articles on e-waste had been unfolded in this research. The direction and way forward were illustrated, the trends to date were demonstrated, and the terrain and pathways were evaluated on the research of e-waste. Bibliometric analysis method was applied to analyze various attributes on the 100 most-cited articles which were retrieved from WoSCC on May 25, 2021, by utilizing the software tools Microsoft Excel 2016 and VOS viewer 1.6.9. The publication year and citation number of the 100 articles ranged between 2003 and 2017 and from 83 to 925, respectively. Environmental Science & Technology (n=17) published the maximum articles. Waste Management, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Environmental Science & Technology were the core journals on e-waste. One hundred twenty-three institutions and 25 countries were involved in publishing the 100 articles. Three hundred seventy authors contributed to the 100 articles in total. A total of 267 keywords occurred in the 100 articles. The keywords "e-waste" and "recycling" held the highest occurrences. The study content of the 100 articles could be classified into four types including the characteristic-and-property type, the environment-and-health type, the management-and-economic type, and the technique-and-processing type. Overall completeness and applicability of the evidence found in this study were verified sufficiently; the potential biases in the review process were also considered. The innovations of the research from the past bibliometric analysis work on e-waste were stated, and the implication for practice and research of this study were explained as well. 2007, 2008, and 2009 were a peak of the researches on e-waste, while the recent years were experiencing a valley. China and its institutions were most influential in this field on e-waste. India was becoming more and more influential on e-waste research in the world. Nigeria was the research center in Africa, and Brazil was the research center in Latin America. Wong Minghung was the most important expert on e-waste. The impact on environment and human being's health was the hot topic of researches on e-waste; the characteristic and property of e-waste were studied not enough. The researches of technique and processing would be the direction and way forward in the study field on e-waste. The characteristic and property on e-waste would need more attention to be researched. The researchers could develop new pathways based on and beyond the four types of content evaluated in this research.
