Abstract:Constructing heterojunction to adjust the electronic structure of catalysts is a promising strategy for synergistically improving electrocatalytic activity. In addition, RuSe2 is recognized as an effective alternative to Pt for boosting alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction on account of its outstanding catalytic properties. Herein, novel RuSe2/CeO2 heterojunction electrocatalysts are fabricated through hydrothermal and thermal treatment method. The optimal 50% RuSe2/CeO2 heterojunction electrocatalyst exhibits a low HER overpotential of 17 mV to attain 10 mA·cm-2 current density and Tafel slope of 66.1 mV·dec-1 for hydrogen evolution in 1.0 M KOH. At the same time, the 50% RuSe2/CeO2 heterojunction electrocatalyst also maintains a stable HER activity for 20 h or 3000 CV cycles. The experimental results show that formation of heterogeneous interface between RuSe2 and CeO2 results in the redistribution of electrons at the RuSe2/CeO2 interface, thereby changing the electronic structure of RuSe2, which enhances performance of the RuSe2/CeO2 electrocatalyst. This work may provide a feasible way to design efficient hydrogen evolution heterojunction electrocatalysts by modulating electronic structures in alkaline electrolytes.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping and vacancy engineering play vital roles in designing a high-activity electrocatalyst. Herein, we proposed a novel enriched Se vacancies engineering of the promising ruthenium chalcogenide of RuSe2 induced by low-valence Cu doping for promoting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis in alkaline media. The Cu-doped RuSe2 with enriched Se vacancies supported on graphitized carbon (Cu-RuSe2@C) was synthesized by a simple one-step selenization of bimetallic MOF precursor of Ru/Cu-BTC (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) polyhedra. Compared to the Cu(Ⅱ)-dominant doped RuSe2 (CuⅡ/Ⅰ-RuSe2@C) with deficient Se vacancies, the proposed Cu(Ⅰ)-dominant doped RuSe2 (CuⅠ/Ⅱ-RuSe2@C) with enriched Se vacancies exhibited significantly improved electrocatalytic activity, which was potentially derived from the created electron-deficient Ruδ+ and Seν− sites induced by low-valence Cu doping. Specifically, CuⅠ/Ⅱ-RuSe2@C needed only 40 mV overpotential to drive a HER current density of 10 mA cm−2, comparable to commercial Pt/C (38 mV) and much lower than those of CuⅡ/Ⅰ-RuSe2@C (93 mV) and RuSe2@C (362 mV). Furthermore, an alkaline Zn-H2O fuel cell with a CuⅠ/Ⅱ-RuSe2@C cathode was integrated to demonstrate its potential applications, which delivered a maximum power density of 15.1 mW cm−2 and specific capacitance of 660 mAh g−1 with good stability. Two series-connected alkaline Zn-H2O cells acted as a chemical energy converter for simultaneous electricity generation and hydrogen coproduction by driving the coupled water splitting.

Abstract:The development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions is an extremely important area for the development of green and clean energy. In this work, a precursor material was successfully prepared via electrodeposition of two doping elements to construct a co-doped cobalt hydroxide electrocatalyst (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se). This approach was demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The experimental results show that the material exhibited a smaller impedance value and a larger electrochemically active surface area. In the HER process, the overpotential was only 109 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. In addition, the doping of selenium and ruthenium effectively prevented the corrosion of the catalysts, with the (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se) material showing no significant reduction in the catalytic performance after 50 h. This synergistic approach through elemental co-doping demonstrated good results in the HER process.

Facile Synthesis of PdCuRu Porous Nanoplates as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Abstract:Ru is a key component of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially in alkaline media. However, the catalytic activity and durability of Ru-based HER electrocatalysts are still far from satisfactory. Here we report a solvothermal approach for the synthesis of PdCuRu porous nanoplates with different Ru compositions by using Pd nanoplates as the seeds. The PdCuRu porous nanoplates were formed through underpotential deposition (UPD) of Cu on Pd, followed by alloying Cu with Pd through interdiffusion and galvanic replacement between Cu atoms and Ru precursor simultaneously. When evaluated as HER electrocatalysts, the PdCuRu porous nanoplates exhibited excellent catalytic activity and durability. Of them, the Pd24Cu29Ru47/C achieved the lowest overpotential (40.7 mV) and smallest Tafel slope (37.5 mV dec(-1)) in an alkaline solution (much better than commercial Pt/C). In addition, the Pd24Cu29Ru47/C only lost 17% of its current density during a stability test for 10 h, while commercial Pt/C had a 59.5% drop under the same conditions. We believe that the electron coupling between three metals, unique porous structure, and strong capability of Ru for water dissociation are responsible for such an enhancement in HER performance.

Abstract:The exploration of high-efficiency and stable electrocatalysts for alkaline and seawater hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key to realize energy conversion, but there is still a significant challenge owing to the slow HER kinetics in alkaline and seawater systems. In this study, we prepared nickel foamed-supported Ru, W co-doped NiSe2 (Ru, W–NiSe2/NF) by a brief two-step hydrothermal strategy and the prepared Ru, W–NiSe2/NF displays exceptional HER property, requiring only a low overpotential of 100 and 353 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH and natural seawater, respectively, far superior to Ru–NiSe2/NF, W–NiSe2/NF and NiSe2/NF. Electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) verify the abundant active sites and superior electron transfer rate of Ru, W–NiSe2, which optimized the HER kinetics in alkaline solution and natural seawater. The ECSA normalization and TOF results indicated that Ru, W co-doping increased the intrinsic activity of NiSe2. This study revealed the impact of bimetallic doping on the intrinsic activity of NiSe2, and provided a practical strategy for designing and developing the HER electrocatalysts with excellent performance.

Abstract:Ruthenium-based electrocatalysts exhibit promising potential as alternatives to platinum for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. However, Ru catalysts require further optimization for their hydrogen binding ability and face challenges with sluggish kinetics of water dissociation. Here, we reported a novel dual-site synergistic catalyst, Ru 1 -Mo 2 C, via reversible hydrogen-spillover mode to achieve high activity and stability towards HER simultaneously. The electronic metal-support interaction significantly modulated the charge redistribution of Ru 1 -Mo 2 C, resulting in optimized d-band center and binding strength of H*. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that water dissociation is proceeded on Mo 2 C and the generated hydrogen atoms are subsequently transferred to adjacent Ru single atom sites for H 2 formation and release, enabling the reaction to adopt a reversible hydrogen spillover mechanism. As a consequence, the Ru 1 -Mo 2 C exhibited an excellent HER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 10.8 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and mass activity of 8.67 A mg PGM -1 (@100 mV), which is 16.7 times that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. The alkaline exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) with Ru 1 -Mo 2 C as cathodic catalyst achieves 1.0 A cm −2 at 1.83 V and remains stable at 500 mA cm −2 for over 200 hours.

Abstract:This study proposes a tailoring strategy to fabricate high‐density Ru SACs (13.87 wt.%) confined in the CoP (NC@RuSA‐CoP). The hollow structure ensures adequate exposure to the active sites. CoP modulates the electronic structure of Ru and optimizes the hydrogen adsorption energy on the Ru sites. NC@RuSA‐CoP presents excellent HER activity in both acidic and alkaline media and shows the potential to serve as a practical cathode for industrial hydrogen production. Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a wide pH range and industrial large‐scale hydrogen production is critical and challenging. Here, a tailoring strategy is developed to fabricate an outstanding HER catalyst in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes containing high‐density atomically dispersed Ru sites anchored in the CoP nanoparticles supported on carbon spheres (NC@RuSA‐CoP). The obtained NC@RuSA‐CoP catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance with overpotentials of only 15 and 13 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH and 0.5 m H2SO4, respectively. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the strong interaction between the Ru site and the CoP can effectively optimize the electronic structure of Ru sites to reduce the hydrogen binding energy and the water dissociation energy barrier. The constructed alkaline anion exchange membrane water electrolyze (AAEMWE) demonstrates remarkable durability and an industrial‐level current density of 1560 mA cm−2 at 1.8 V. This strategy provides a new perspective on the design of Ru‐based electrocatalysts with suitable intermediate adsorption strengths and paves the way for the development of highly active electrocatalysts for industrial‐scale hydrogen production.

Realization of electron-deficient Ru sites via Co4N coupling for synergistically enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru), benefitting from the efficient water dissociation ability, is considered a good candidate for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); however, the strong binding of H intermediate over Ru sites leads to a limited desorption behavior and thus an unsatisfactory HER activity. Here, we proposed a strategy to fabricate a well-defined hetero-interface via anchoring Ru nanoparticles on Co4N nanorods grown on nickel foam (Ru/Co4N/NF). The as-prepared Ru/Co4N/NF catalyst is demonstrated to effectively catalyze water splitting into hydrogen in an alkaline electrolyte, with an overpotential of 145 mV to reach 100 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 25 mV dec-1, far surpassing bare Ru/NF and Co4N/NF. Experimental observations combined with computational simulations reveal that the charge migration from Ru to Co4N contributes to the formation of electron-deficient Ru sites and renders the d-band center away from Fermi level, which is conducive to hydrogen desorption. Meanwhile, the electron coupling effect between Ru and Co4N reduces the H2O adsorption energy and allows more electrons to participate in H2O molecule activation.

Abstract:A novel Ru‐O3Se4 single atoms doped Ni3Se2/FeSe2 interface catalyst is constructed by simple hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. Importantly, introducing Ru‐O3Se4 single atoms causes charge redistribution at the Ni3Se2/FeSe2 interface, facilitating the conversion of the reaction intermediates H* and OOH*, thus improving the HER and OER activities in alkaline condition. Developing low‐cost, highly active, and stable bifunctional catalysts is of great significance for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, novel Ru‐O3Se4 single atoms doped Ni3Se2/FeSe2 interface catalyst is fabricated by a two‐step method for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Notably, Ru‐Ni3Se2/FeSe2 nanosheets exhibit excellent HER (43 mV@10 mA cm−2) and OER (283 mV@100 mA cm−2) activities in alkaline solution. In particular, the mass activity of Ru‐Ni3Se2/FeSe2 catalyst is 3593.61 mA mg Ru−1 at 200 mV for HER and 7073.80 mA mgRu−1 at 400 mV for OER, which is 25.91 and 367.28 times of commercial Pt/C and RuO2, respectively. In situ spectroscopy techniques confirm Ru‐O3Se4 single atoms facilitate the adsorption of intermediates H* and OOH* during HER and OER processes, respectively. Further density functional theory calculations reveal introducing Ru‐O3Se4 single atoms causes the transfer of electrons from Ru to Ni and Fe atoms, leading to a redistribution of charge at the Ni3Se2/FeSe2 interface, thus reducing the energy barriers of rate‐determining step to −0.37 and 1.92 eV for HER and OER, respectively. This work emphasizes the significant role of single atoms at the interface for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Abstract Exploring an active and cost-effective electrocatalyst alternative to carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained elusive to date. Here, we report a catalyst based on platinum single atoms (SAs) doped into the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO 2 support (referred to as Pt-Ru/RuO 2 ), which features a low HER overpotential, an excellent stability and a distinctly enhanced cost-based activity compared to commercial Pt/C and Ru/C in 1 M KOH. Advanced physico-chemical characterizations disclose that the sluggish water dissociation is accelerated by RuO 2 while Pt SAs and the metallic Ru facilitate the subsequent H* combination. Theoretical calculations correlate with the experimental findings. Furthermore, Pt-Ru/RuO 2 only requires 1.90 V to reach 1 A cm −2 and delivers a high price activity in the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. This research offers a feasible guidance for developing the noble metal-based catalysts with high performance and low cost toward practical H 2 production.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen production has been a promising high-purity hydrogen production technology, attracting a large number of researchers' research interest. Ru has a hydrogen binding capacity similar to Pt, but its price is far lower than Pt, making it a promising alternative to Pt. However, a single Se electronic structure modulation is not sufficient to enable RuSe2 to be used for practical applications on a large scale due to the lack of electrons. Therefore, choosing a suitable way to electronically modulate the Ru atoms in RuSe2 can effectively improve the activity of the catalyst. Cobalt telluride (CoTe) can significantly enhance electrocatalytic performance due to tellurium's low electronegativity and excellent metal properties. In this work, the NC layer possesses excellent electrical conductivity and CoTe acts as an electron donor to optimize the electronic structure locally and trigger electron transfer efficiently. The RuSe2-CoTe/NC electrode requires an overpotential of only 25.4 mV (10 mA cm-2), which is superior to that of RuSe2/NF (65 mV) and CoTe/NC (115 mV). Meanwhile, the Tafel slope of RuSe2-CoTe/NC (67.8 mV dec-1) was better than that of RuSe2/NF (113.6 mV dec-1) and CoTe/NC (209.5 mV dec-1), showing that the build-up of the superior heterojunction makes the RuSe2-CoTe/NC with better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reaction kinetics. In addition, after 30 h of long-term stability testing, no significant decrease in catalytic activity was observed, proving the good stability of the RuSe2-CoTe/NC catalyst.

Abstract:Ruthenium chalcogenide is a highly promising catalytic system as a Pt alternative for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, well‐studied ruthenium selenide (RuSe2) still exhibits sluggish HER kinetics in alkaline media due to the inappropriate adsorption strength of H and H2O. Herein, w e report a new design of Cu‐doped Ru/RuSe2 heterogeneous nanosheets (NSs) with optimized H and H2O adsorption strength for highly efficient HER catalysis in alkaline media. Theoretical calculations reveal that the superior HER performance is attributed to a synergistic effect of the unique heterogeneous interface structure and Cu doping, which not only optimizes the electronic structure with a suitable d‐band center to suppress proton overbinding but also alleviates the energy barrier with enhanced H2O adsorption. As a result, Cu‐doped heterogeneous Ru/RuSe2 NSs exhibit a small overpotential of 23 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 58.5 mV dec−1 and a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 0.88 s−1 at 100 mV for HER in alkaline media, which is among the best catalysts in noble metal‐based electrocatalysts toward HER. The present Cu‐doped Ru/RuSe2 NSs interface catalyst is very stable for HER by showing no activity decay after 5000‐cycle potential sweeps. Amorphous-crystalline porous ruthenium selenide as highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Transition metal chalcogenides have garnered considerable attention as high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Enriching their structural properties through constructing a porous architecture and creating crystalline-amorphous interfaces holds promise for enhancing HER performance. In this study, porous RuSe2 electrocatalysts with varying crystallinities (i.e., amorphous, amorphous-crystal, and crystal) were synthesized using a straightforward hydrothermal method followed by a subsequent annealing process. Comparable experiments indicate that porous RuSe2-400°C, featuring a crystalline-amorphous structure, exhibited enhanced catalytic activity compared to its amorphous and crystalline counterparts. The porous architecture and interfacial sites between crystalline and amorphous phases in RuSe2-400°C not only integrate the critical factors of abundant unsaturated coordination sites and good electrical conductivity but also modify its surface electronic state, which can optimize the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates. As a result, the optimized samples displayed remarkable HER activity in an alkaline medium, showcasing an extremely low overpotential of 27 mV at 10 mA cm- 2 and a Tafel slope of 39.8 mV dec- 1. This study provides a platform for rationalizing high-perform porous electrocatalysts with rich amorphous/crystalline interfaces.

Abstract:Converting electricity into hydrogen is vital for harnessing concentrated renewable energy. To achieve this, cost-effective electrocatalysts capable of withstanding mildly corrosive alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) conditions are necessary. Ru shows potential as a substitute for Pt-based electrocatalysts due to its comparable hydrogen bond strength. However, improvements are needed to overcome obstacles in water dissociation and hydrogen desorption during alkaline HER. In this work, Ru was alloyed with Re which is water dissociation-efficient to induce a redistribution of electron density in Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 nanoparticles (NPs). These Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 NPs exhibited superior hydrogen desorption, outperforming Pt, highlighting their effectiveness in HER. The Re component received electrons from adjacent Ru while maintaining low energy barriers for water decomposition. Additionally, self-aggregation of Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 NPs was prevented by incorporating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support, resulting in improved conductivity and electrochemical durability in Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 Through various analyses, the optimal synthesis and electronic structure adjustments in Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 were confirmed, which exhibited remarkable HER overpotentials with values of 14 and 74 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, in a 1 M KOH solution. These findings establish Ru 0.48 Re 0.52 as a universal approach for designing efficient electrocatalysts for HER, surpassing both the activity and cost of commercialized Pt/C.

Abstract:Developing efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline water electrolysis is central to substantial progress of alkaline hydrogen production. Herein, a Ni5 P4 electrocatalyst incorporating single-atom Ru (Ni5 P4 -Ru) is synthesized through the filling of Ru3+ species into the metal vacancies of nickel hydroxides and subsequent phosphorization treatment. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray-based measurements, and electron microscopy observations confirm the strong interaction between the nickel-vacancy defect and Ru cation, resulting in more than 3.83 wt% single-atom Ru incorporation in the obtained Ni5 P4 -Ru. The Ni5 P4 -Ru as an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst achieves low onset potential of 17 mV and an overpotential of 54 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 together with a small Tafel slope of 52.0 mV decade-1 and long-term stability. Further spectroscopy analyses combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the doped Ru sites can cause localized structure polarization, which brings the low energy barrier for water dissociation on Ru site and the optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy on the interstitial site, well rationalizing the experimental reactivity.

Abstract:Accurately manipulating the electronic structure of metal active sites under working conditions is central to developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts in industrial water-alkali electrolyzers. However, the lack of an intuitive means to capture the evolution of metal sites during the reaction state inhibits the manipulation of its electronic structure. Here, atomically dispersed Ru single-sites on cobalt nanoparticles confined onto macro-microporous frameworks (M-Co NPs@Ru SAs/NC) with tunable electron coupling effect for efficient catalysis of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are constructed. Using operando X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopies, a dynamic CoRu bond shrinkage with strong electron coupling effect under working conditions is identified, which significantly promotes the adsorption of water molecules and then accelerates its dissociation to form the key H* over Ru sites for high HER activity. The well-designed M-Co NPs@Ru SAs/NC delivers efficient HER performance with a small overpotential of 34 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of ≈4284 H2 h-1 at -0.05 V, 40 times higher than that of the benchmark Pt/C. This work provides a new point of view to manipulate the electronic structure of the metal active sites for highly effective electrocatalysis processes.

Abstract:Despite being regarded as a favorable substitute for platinum-based catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) exhibits inferior electrocatalytic performance due to its inadequate conductivity and limited active sites. However, employing molecular engineering for modification holds great potential in significantly enhancing its performance, yet it still poses significant challenges. Herein, an interface engineering strategy was adopted to obtain RuSe 2 modified MoSe 2 composite catalysts (RuSe 2 /MoSe 2 ). In alkaline media, RuSe 2 /MoSe 2 exhibited a reduced overpotential of 147.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 comparing with pristine MoSe 2 (351.8 mV). Experimental findings and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that increased conductivity, enhanced hydrophily and optimized adsorption free energies of *H contribute to its enhanced HER activity. This work opens up an interface engineering strategy for designing more efficient selenide-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The alkaline H-2-generation activity of RuSe2 materials is inhibited by its relatively inadequate water-adsorption ability and weak selenium-hydrogen (Se-H-ads) bonds in photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, the water adsorption ability and Se-H-ads bonds have been synchronously strengthened to improve the photocatalytic H-2 evolution of TiO2 via creating electron-deficient Ru delta+ and Se delta+ sites in Se-rich amorphous RuSe2+x (RuSe2+x) nanodots. By a facile complexation-photodeposition pathway, Se-rich RuSe2+x nanodots (ca. 1.5 nm) are perfectly anchored onto TiO2 nanoparticles. Compared to the pristine TiO2 and conventional c-RuSe2/TiO2 materials, the constructed Se-rich RuSe2+x/TiO2(0.5 wt %) photocatalyst achieves an improved H-2-generation rate of 227.42 mu mol h(-1) with releasing visual H-2 bubbles in alkaline media. The experimental and theoretical studies support that the excess Se atoms in the Se-rich RuSe2+x nanodots induce the charge redistribution of Ru and Se atoms to form electron-deficient Ru delta+ and Se delta+ sites, which synchronously enhance water adsorption and strengthen Se-H-ads bonds, thus boosting alkaline photocatalytic H-2 production. This research delivers a significant approach to design high-performance materials for alkaline H-2 production by double active-site regulation.

Abstract:Alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) suffers from a sluggish kinetic, which requires the elaborate catalytic interface and micro-nanoscale architecture engineering of the electrocatalysts to accelerate the water dissociation and hydrogen evolution. Herein, the heterointerface engineering was proposed for promoting the alkaline HER by constructing the highly exposed Ru/RuS 2 heterostructures homogeneously distributed on hollow N/S-doped carbon microspheres (Ru/RuS 2 @h-NSC). Benefited from the synergistic effect of heterointerfacial Ru/RuS 2 , the high accessibility of the active sites on both inner and outer surface of mesoporous shells and the efficient mass transport, Ru/RuS 2 @h-NSC affords a remarkable catalytic performance with an overpotential of 26 mA/cm 2 for alkaline HER, outperforming most of the state-of-the-art catalysts. Further applying Ru/RuS 2 @h-NSC and its oxidized derivate for the overall alkaline water splitting, the required cell voltage is much lower than that of the commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 pair to achieve the same current density. Our study may allow us to guide the design of micro-nanoreactors with optimal catalytic interfaces for promising electrocatalytic applications.

Regulation of the electronic structure of a RuNi/MoC electrocatalyst for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution in alkaline seawater

Abstract:Alkaline seawater electrolysis offers a way to generate hydrogen without carbon emissions. However, developing highly efficient catalysts that can sustain high performance and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater is a formidable challenge. Here, a nanowire (NW) of a RuNi/MoC heterojunction embedded in N-doped carbon (RuNi/MoC@NC) was developed as a potent HER catalyst. The catalyst required only 21 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER in alkaline seawater, which surpasses 20% Pt/C. Moreover, using nickel foam (NF) as a catalyst carrier, an electrolyzer composed of RuNi/MoC@NC and nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) needed only 1.81 V at 500 mA cm −2 for full water splitting and showed long-term stability (over 500 h). Theoretical calculation revealed that the Ru and Ni sites in the catalyst had the optimal adsorption energy for hydrogen and water, respectively, which synergistically lowered the energy barrier for HER. This work offered an efficient method to design a highly effective HER catalyst for alkaline seawater splitting.
