Abstract:When global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is interfered by electronic jamming or obstacles around, there may be outliers in GNSS measured values which will reduce the accuracy of the position estimation and degrade the flight control quality. In order to solve this problem, a robust position estimation algorithm with the ability of restraining the interference of outliers is proposed in this paper. The conception of variation of the observation is introduced in this paper to be the judgment of the outliers' identification. Meanwhile, the weight factors based on the variation of the observation is introduced to adjust the weight of the abnormal observations in real time. The proposed method is proved by simulations and experimental studies. The results show that this method can provide a stable and reliable position information and improve the flight control quality.
High-spin-rate roll angle measurement method based on GPS using single patch antenna

Abstract:The Global Positioning System (GPS) signals-based roll angle measurement methods are key technologies for spinning vehicles with side-mounted single patch antenna. Most existing research focuses on attitude measurement at low spin rates, and it is difficult to achieve accurate roll angle measurement at a time-varying situation with high spin rates, and the attitude measurement errors are not modeled and analyzed. A multi-channel roll angle measurement method based on a third-order phase-locked loop is proposed to improve the attitude measurement accuracy and stability. The effects of phase-locked loop (PLL) tracking errors, errors induced by antenna gain, and antenna phase center offset errors are analyzed and verified by simulation. The intermediate frequency (IF) GPS signals received by a single patch antenna are sampled on a testbed to verify the roll angle measurement method. The experiment results show that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the roll angle measurement is 5° ± 1° at spin rates ranging from 50 to 200 r/s.

Sideslip angle estimation is vital to the safety and active control of autonomous vehicles. In this paper, an innovative vehicle kinematic-based sideslip angle estimation method is proposed. The method is built on multi-sensor fusion, which fuses the information of inertial measurement unit, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), and onboard sensors to continuously estimate the attitude and velocity of the vehicle and thus obtain the sideslip angle. The invariant extended Kalman filter framework is adopted and the left-invariant form is derived to implement the GNSS measurement update. In order to solve the unobservability problem when only a single GNSS receiver is equipped, the vehicle motion constraint is introduced into the filter to improve the accuracy of heading angle estimation. The method is validated by field test and the results show that the method is robust in terms of converge efficiency. Furthermore, the sideslip angle estimation accuracy is satisfactory with the average absolute error less than 0.25°, which meets the active safety control requirements for autonomous driving.

Abstract:Attitude information obtained from low-cost magnetic, angular rate, and gravity (MARG) sensors is prone to be deteriorated by disturbances such as external acceleration and magnetic anomaly in operational environments. To address the problem, a robust attitude estimation algorithm using low-cost MARG sensors is proposed. An error state Kalman filter (ESKF) is used for data fusing, in which the attitude errors are interpreted as a small rotation vector, and the gyro bias variation is also estimated. The nominal state and the error state are propagated with unit quaternion and rotation vector, respectively. An attitude correction is followed which combines the nominal and error parts by quaternion multiplication. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is embodied in resisting accuracy degradation of the attitude estimation caused by both external acceleration and magnetic anomalies. While external accelerations and magnetic disturbances are detected online, the accuracy reduction in attitude estimation is prevented by adaptively adjusting the related measurement noise covariance matrix. Besides, a two-step measurement update strategy is designed to guarantee that the roll and pitch update is separated from the yaw update. Various rotation and land vehicle dynamic tests have been conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Precision-guided projectiles, which can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of fire strikes, are on the rise in current military engagements. The accurate measurement of roll angular rate is critical to guide a gun-launched projectile. However, Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) gyroscope with low cost and large range cannot meet the requirement of high precision roll angular rate measurement due to the limitation by the current technology level. Aiming at the problem, the optimization-based angular rate estimation (OBARS) method specific for projectiles is proposed in this study. First, the output angular rate model of redundant gyroscope system based on the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model is established, and then the conventional random error model is improved with the ARIMA model. After that, a Sage-Husa Adaptive Kalman Filter (SHAKF) algorithm that can suppress the time-varying process and measurement noise under the flight condition of the high dynamic of the projectile is designed for the fusion of dynamic data. Finally, simulations and experiments have been carried out to validate the performance of the method. The results demonstrate the proposed method can effectively improve the angular rate accuracy more than the related traditional methods for high spinning projectiles.

Abstract:Onboard attitude estimation for a ground vehicle is persuaded by its application in active anti-roll bar design. Conventionally, the attitude estimation problem for a ground vehicle is a complex one, and computationally, its solution is very intensive. Lateral load transfer is an important parameter which should be taken in account for all roll stability control systems. This parameter is directly related to vehicle roll angle, which can be measured using devices such as dual antenna global positioning system (GPS) which is a costly technique, and this led to the current work in which we developed a simple and robust attitude estimation technique that is tested on a ground vehicle for roll mitigation. In the first phase Luenberger and Sliding mode observer is implemented using simplest roll dynamics model to measure the roll angle of a vehicle and the validation of results is carried using commercial software, CarSim® (CarSim, Ann Arbor, MI, USA). In the second phase of research, complementary and Kalman filters have been designed for attitude estimation. In the third phase, a low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) is mounted on a vehicle, and both the complementary filter (CF) and Kalman filter (KF) are applied independently to measure the data for both smooth and uneven terrains at four different frequencies. We compared the simulated and real-time results of roll and pitch angles obtained using the complementary and Kalman filters. Using the proposed method, the achieved root mean square error (RMSE) is less than 0.73 degree for pitch and 0.68 degree for roll, with a sample time of 2 ms. Thus, a warning signal can be generated to mitigate roll over. Hence, we claim that our proposed method can provide a low-cost solution to the roll-over problem for a road vehicle.

Abstract:Accurate lateral load transfer estimation plays an important role in improving the performance of the active rollover prevention system equipped in commercial vehicles. This estimation depends on the accurate prediction of roll angles for both the sprung and the unsprung subsystems. This paper proposes a novel computational method for roll-angle estimation in commercial vehicles employing sensors which are already used in a vehicle dynamic control system without additional expensive measurement units. The estimation strategy integrates two blocks. The first block contains a sliding-mode observer which is responsible for calculating the lateral tyre forces, while in the second block, the Kalman filter estimates the roll angles of the sprung mass and those of axles in the truck. The validation is conducted through MATLAB/TruckSim co-simulation. Based on the comparison between the estimated results and the simulation results from TruckSim, it can be concluded that the proposed estimation method has a promising tracking performance with low computational cost and high convergence speed. This approach enables a low-cost solution for the rollover prevention in commercial vehicles.

Abstract:High-accuracy heading angle is significant for estimating autonomous vehicle attitude. By integrating GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) dual antennas, INS (Inertial Navigation System), and a barometer, a GNSS/INS/Barometer fusion method is proposed to improve vehicle heading angle accuracy. An adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) is designed to fuse the INS error and the GNSS measurement. A random sample consensus (RANSAC) method is proposed to improve the initial heading angle accuracy applied to the INS update. The GNSS heading angle obtained by a dual-antenna orientation algorithm is additionally augmented to the measurement variable. Furthermore, the kinematic constraint of zero velocity in the lateral and vertical directions of vehicle movement is used to enhance the accuracy of the measurement model. The heading errors in the open and occluded environment are 0.5418° (RMS) and 0.636° (RMS), which represent reductions of 37.62% and 47.37% compared to the extended Kalman filter (EKF) method, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves the vehicle heading angle accuracy.

Abstract:The precise measurement of the spin speed of a high-speed autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (HAS-UAV) is a key element in mastering flight stability, and the measurement of roll angle is the key to determining the accuracy of navigation control systems. We put forward a novel method for measuring roll angle. This method starts from the time-frequency domain analysis (TFDA) of the output signal of the geomagnetic sensor, extracts the time-frequency ridge of the time-frequency matrix (TFM) to obtain the spin speed of the HSA-UAV, and reconstructs the output signal of the geomagnetic sensor. It can calculate the roll angle when the calibration parameters of the geomagnetic sensor are unknown and have good engineering practical value. In addition, we also propose an improved nonlinear short-time Fourier transform (INLSTFT) with high-frequency resolution and a forward penalty dynamic path ridge-extraction method (FPDPRM) with frequency jump suppression to extract instantaneous frequency (IF) in the TFM.

Abstract:The attitude measurement system based on geomagnetic information offers advantages such as small space requirements, fast response times, excellent resistance to high-overload conditions, and cost-effectiveness. However, during the flight process of a high-mobility guided spinning projectile, calculating attitude based on geomagnetic information often leads to non-unique solutions. To address this challenge, this paper proposes the Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (AEKF) attitude estimation algorithm, based on geomagnetic vector information. Based on the analysis of the short-term attitude motion characteristics of the projectile, the Kalman state system equation and the nonlinear observation equation are established, along with real-time correction of the yaw angle and adaptive updates of parameters. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by simulations and experiments, demonstrating its ability to eliminate the dual solution problem inherent in traditional Single-Epoch algorithms. It notably improves the accuracy of pitch and roll angle estimation while providing precise estimates of attitude angular rates. Furthermore, the algorithm effectively mitigates the impact of magnetic disturbances on attitude determination. The proposed method has many potential applications in attitude measurement and navigation using geomagnetic data.

Abstract:Taking advantage of available measurement in Internet of Things (IoT) for intelligent transportation systems, a sideslip angle estimation method for autonomous vehicles is presented and experimentally verified by fusing global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU), and by constructing an observability index (OI). The correlation between the vehicle sideslip error and the inertial navigation system (INS) heading error is presented first. Then, the observability for the heading error in a velocity-based Kalman filter is discussed and a novel index is defined to check the observability of the heading error. The course from a single antenna GNSS in an autonomous vehicle is augmented to estimate the heading error when the observability of the heading error is low. To reject the course measurement for scenarios that include sideslip movement, a binary hypothesis test approach is applied to indicate whether the vehicle is sidesliping. In addition, based on the OI and the sideslip indicator, a hybrid feedback strategy is designed for the heading error correction. To improve the convergence rate of the heading error in the velocity-based Kalman filter, a tuning strategy is presented. The stochastical observability of the designed Kalman observer is investigated for known and stochastic initial conditions. Finally, the proposed sideslip angle estimator is experimentally validated through a vehicle test platform in critical driving scenarios. The results confirm that the proposed OI can effectively identify when the heading error is observable, and also corroborate the effectiveness of the hybrid feedback strategy and adaptation method in the Kalman observer.

Abstract:In the field of autonomous driving progresses, obtaining the precise position and attitude of vehicles through measurement technology is vital. An integrated GNSS/INS/Barometer (Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Navigation System/Barometer) fusion method is proposed to improve vehicle positioning and heading angle accuracy. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) based on horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP) is designed to fuse the INS error and the GNSS measurement. Furthermore, GNSS dual antennas are utilized to increase a state variable in EKF based on HDOP in addition to position and velocity. The kinematic constraint of zero velocity in the lateral and vertical directions of vehicle movement is used to measure the mounting angle to reduce error. The position and heading angle accuracy of the proposed method are 0.483m and 1.358°, which represent reductions of 37.03% and 43.86% compared to the conventional EKF method, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can measure accurate position and heading angle in both open and occluded environments.

Abstract:This article presents a method for estimating the angular rate and attitude of high-spin objects with free maneuvering such as flying disks or spinning projectiles. A new framework is proposed that utilizes the estimated spin rate for simultaneous gyroscope calibration and 3-D attitude estimation. Previous studies on spin rate estimation based on periodicity analysis, comparatively, have mostly overlooked the phase anomaly effect that may occur when the attitude changes in the nonorthogonal axes. Therefore, this study explains the newly discovered phase anomaly and makes compensation to improve the spin rate estimation performance when the spinning object rotates without any axial constraint. Additionally, a new observation model is proposed, relating the roll rate and gyroscope scale factor using the estimated spin rate. Based on this model, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is developed to calibrate the gyroscope scale factor and estimate 3-D attitude. To address the time-delay characteristics of the spinning rate used as a measurement, a two-stage cascade EKF (CEKF) is implemented. The performance of the proposed methods is validated through simulations of spinning projectiles at rates of 30 and 60 rotations per second, as well as empirical rotation experiments using turntable. This study distinguishes itself from previous research by including explicit orthogonal rotation with respect to the principal rotation axis, and its performance is demonstrated accordingly.

Abstract:Purpose Attitude and heading are very important measurements on board aircraft. In modern solutions they are measured by the attitude and heading reference system (AHRS). In some small unmanned systems, the GPS track angle is used for heading corrections instead of the magnetometer; then, the system measures the track angle instead of heading. With a temporary lack of correction signals, the measurement error increases very quickly. Similarly, a quick increase in the measurement error is observed when a magnetic heading sensor used for correction stops working properly. This study aims to propose measurement of the roll angle for yaw angle correction. Design/methodology/approach AHRS algorithms were designed; typical maneuvers were analyzed. The method was verified by simulation and in flight testing analysis. For quantitative analyses, a performance index was proposed. Findings The method enables reduction of the yaw angle error caused by the gyros bias error. This study presents the idea, results of simulations and flight testing data analysis and discusses advantages and limitations of the presented method. Practical implications The presented methodology can be implemented in AHRS systems for manned and unmanned aircraft. Originality/value This study enables more accurate measurement of the yaw angle in the case of missing correction signals.

Abstract:The attitude of a vehicle can be largely determined by integrating the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) in land-based applications. However, traditional dual-antenna GNSS/IMU integrated systems are susceptible to signal reflection, diffraction, and even interruption, leading to reduced accuracy and reliability in challenging environments. To address this issue, this paper proposes an adaptive IMU error correction algorithm for dual-antenna GNSS/IMU integrated vehicle attitude determination. First, we propose an IMU-aided baseline length constraint model to support the ambiguity resolution (AR) process. This model incorporates accurate prior information from the IMU, improving the success rate of AR within the dual-antenna GNSS/IMU integrated system. Second, we present an adaptive IMU error correction mechanism based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to assist in vehicle attitude determination and mitigate attitude error drift of the lMU during GNSS outages. Field test results verified that, compared to two other candidate algorithms, the proposed algorithm improves accuracy in roll, pitch, and yaw by 19.23%, 30.56%, and 67.12%, respectively, and by 12.50%, 10.71%, and 38.39% respectively. Moreover, in two distinct scenarios where GNSS is blocked for 120 seconds, the proposed algorithm still provides accurate and stable attitude information for vehicle navigation, with the accuracy of roll, pitch, and yaw kept within 0.08 degrees.

Abstract:<p>Gyro-less angular velocity estimation is significant for the attitude control of spacecraft when the gyro is unavailable. The paper considered that the angular velocity remains almost constant in a short free-motion period, indicating that these endpoints of celestial body directions are on parallel planes. On this basis, we developed a novel angular velocity estimation method by optimizing these parallel planes with an iterative algorithm. Moreover, we proposed an alternative intermittent attitude control method, including a free-motion period for angular velocity calculation and a control period for attitude stabilization, respectively. Wherein, the length of the free-motion period is adjusted according to the magnitude of angular velocity to improve the calculation accuracy. Besides, we introduced a control law and analyzed the system stability using the Lyapunov method. For validation, we developed some simulation cases by constructing a semi-physical simulation platform and analyzed the effects of observation noise, the moment of inertia, and angular velocity. The simulation results show that the angular velocity estimation method has better accuracy and faster convergence than the Kalman method when considering observation noise. That is, the proposed intermittent attitude control method is feasible for the attitude stabilization.</p>

Accurate estimation of vehicle sideslip angle (SA) and tire lateral force (TLF) is essential for the effective functioning of vehicle active safety control systems. However, effective estimation of SA and TLF using low-cost on-board sensors is a major challenge. In this paper, a robust joint estimation method of SA and TLF for distributed drive electric vehicle (DDEV) is proposed. Adaptive sliding-mode observer (ASMO) is used to estimate the TLF and is used as the input to the subsequent filter. Maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) is introduced to improve the robustness of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) under mixed Gaussian noise, and the maximum correntropy unscented Kalman filter (MCUKF) algorithm is composed to estimate SA. The effectiveness of the proposed ASMO and MCUKF joint estimation method is verified by Simulink/Carsim joint simulation experiments. The experimental results show that compared with the existing methods, the estimation method proposed in this paper effectively improves the estimation accuracy and robustness of SA and TLF under the mixed Gaussian environment, which is of great significance for the improvement of vehicle active safety.

Abstract:GNSS/INS integrated navigation systems can be used as a positioning and orientation system (POS) to provide high precision attitude and position in Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS). The attitude (roll, pitch, and yaw) errors will diverge with time when the vehicle is moving with low dynamics (e.g. no changes of attitude and acceleration), which makes the attitude estimation weakly observable. This is one dominant error source in the POS applications. It can be mitigated by making corresponding vehicle maneuvers to make the navigation states observable. In this paper, the influences of different vehicle maneuvers to the attitude estimation errors are analyzed through simulation method. Results have shown that the motion with time-varying angular rates or accelerations can enhance the yaw estimation, while uniform circular motion is not useful for yaw error estimation. Abstract:The error characteristics of a typical commercial MEMS-IMU were analyzed. Using 15 ICM-42688 sensors, a 3*5 MEMS-IMU array was designed, and a weighted data fusion method based on Allan variance for the MEMS-IMU array was proposed. This effectively reduces the random measurement errors of the MEMS-IMU, providing a data foundation for the precise measurement of motion and attitude of robots, vehicles, aircraft, and other systems under low-cost conditions. The text describes a measurement method for non-stationary motion attitudes of sports vehicles based on adaptive Kalman-Mahony. Specifically, it first uses adaptive Kalman filtering on array sensor data to calculate the measurement noise in real-time and adaptively adjust the filtering gain. Then, it determines the compensation coefficient of the accelerometer to the gyroscope angular velocity based on the motion state of the vehicle, and solves the attitude through complementary filtering to obtain the motion attitude quaternion. Finally, it converts it into the roll angle, pitch angle, and yaw angle of the sports vehicle. Experimental results show that the proposed MEMS-IMU array weighted data fusion method based on Allan variance has significant advantages over traditional single MEMS-IUM methods and traditional average weighting methods in reducing sensor angle random walk and zero drift instability. The proposed adaptive Kalman-Mahony attitude measurement method also shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of non-stationary motion attitude measurement compared to traditional methods.
