Abstract:BackgroundNo formal child protection system exists in China, and redress can be made only through the legal system. Consequently, all forms of child maltreatment are massively under-reported. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of child maltreatment in China and attitudes towards physical punishment by exploring the experiences of young adults.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out in 1255 college students in three colleges in Zhejiang province. A self-administered questionnaire, based on Conflict Tactics Scale—Parent Child and International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) Child Abuse Screening Tool, was developed to measure childhood (younger than 18 years) experience of different forms of maltreatment, including physical maltreatment, psychological aggression, and sexual abuse, and attitudes towards discipline. All participants gave informed consent. The study was approved by Zhejiang University Ethics Board. Data was analysed in SPSS 22.0.FindingsParticipants were aged 17–26 years; 640 (51%) were female, 733 (59%) were from rural areas, and 506 (41%) were from urban areas, with 167 (13%) from self-reported high-income backgrounds, 824 (67%) from middle-income backgrounds, and 246 (20%) from low-income backgrounds (some participants did not provide data for residence and family income background). 1014 (81%) had experienced physical maltreatment, 1026 (82%) psychological aggression, and 170 (14%) sexual abuse. Most common forms of maltreatment by parents were hitting or punching (54%), hitting with implements (29%), threatening to spank without doing it actually (29%), insulting (22%), and forcing to stand or kneel in a humiliating or painful way (19%). 473 (38%) were forced to stand or kneel, and 406 (32%) were insulted by teachers. Among college students who experienced physical maltreatment, 763 (75%) thought that it was necessary for good discipline and thus justified. 364 (43%) of 842 thought hitting and punching were not harmful, with 161 (35%) of 464 saying that the use of implements, 137 (39%) of 350 saying that kicking, and 257 (40%) of 644 reporting that being forced to stand or kneel were not harmful. However, experience of psychological aggression was widely perceived as harmful; 544 (89%) of 614 who were insulted, 60 (78%) of 77 who were told they were not loved, 92 (80%) of 115 who wished they were dead, and 118 (67%) of 177 threatened with abandonment felt that such verbal maltreatment had caused short-term and long-term harm.InterpretationChild maltreatment is common in China. However, experience of psychological aggression was perceived to be more harmful than physical maltreatment, which has important implications for parenting advice and should help to inform the nascent development of a child protection system in China.FundingChina Scholar Council (CSC) and Universities' China Committee in London (UCCL).
Child Disciplinary Practices at Home and Parental Attitudes Towards Physical Punishment to Children in Bangladesh

Abstract:While parental violent disciplining of children is a global concern, children living in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh are particularly more vulnerable to harsh disciplinary practices at home. There is limited empirical evidence on the use of disciplinary practices in Bangladesh, impeding the development of prevention practices. This study investigated the extent of violent child disciplining and parental attitudes toward physical punishment and identified their predictor using data from the 2019 Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. Violent discipline includes any form of physical punishment like spanking, slapping, or hitting any part of the body, as well as psychological aggression such as shouting, screaming, or name-calling. Study participants were 44,570 mothers/caregivers of children aged 2–14 years. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression models were fitted to identify the predictors of violent disciplinary practices and parents' attitudes toward physical punishment. The results revealed a very high prevalence of violent disciplinary practices in Bangladesh. About 89% of the mothers/caregivers reported using at least one form of violent discipline; 39% were spanked, hit, or slapped on the bottom, 29% were hit or slapped on the face, head, or ears, and 5% were beaten up as hard as one could. Younger children, and children from urban areas, certain administrative divisions, poorer families, children with functional difficulties, less educated mothers/caregivers were more likely to experience violent discipline. About 35% of mothers/caregivers supported physical punishment, indicating a large discrepancy between attitude and the practice of violent discipline. Parents' attitudes appeared as one of the strongest predictors of violent discipline. Prevention efforts should be made to promote positive parenting and minimize the gap between parental attitudes and the practice of physical punishment.

[Serodiagnosis of human bocavirus lower respiratory tract infection in children].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the application of serodiagnosis of human bocavirus (HBoV) lower respiratory tract infection in children. METHOD From January to April, 2013, samples including serum, sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALFs) were obtained from 714 children hospitalized with ALRI. Serums were tested for HBoV-specific IgG and IgM antibodies by ELISA and all kinds of samples were tested for HBoV DNA by quantitative real-time fluorescent PCR. The results of HBoV serologic tests, viral DNA in sputum and their combination were compared with those of HBoV DNA in serums and/or BALFs, which was considered as the "standard". Their consistence and differences were evaluated, and the diagnostic parameters including sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, consistency rate, Kappa value and J value were calculated. Age distributions of the HBoV positive patients tested by the latter two methods were also compared. RESULT The positive rate of HBoV serology was 13.2% (94/714) . The results of HBoV serology, its DNA in sputum and their combination were all consistent with those of HBoV DNA in serums and/or BALFs (χ(2) = 91.834, 124.662, 138.643, P < 0.001 for all comparisons) . Differences were significant by McNemar test (χ(2) = 23.547, 33.440, 12.410, P all <0.001) . All the diagnostic parameters for single HBoV serologic test or single viral DNA test in sputa were approximate. However, they were improved to 70.4%, 94.8%, 38.0%, 98.6%, 93.7%, 0.463(P < 0.001), 0.65 for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, consistency rate, Kappa value and J value, respectively, when the methods were combined. HBoV was found positive mainly in children under 3 years of age, especially in the 1 year group. The positive rates were the highest in both group -1 year, and group -3 years was the next. However, the rate was the lowest in group >3 years and in the group -6 months. CONCLUSION Diagnostic power can be improved and age distribution can be demonstrated when serologic tests were combined with traditional sputum DNA detection in children with HBoV lower respiratory tract infection.
Child Maltreatment in the Zhejiang Province of China: the Role of Parental Aggressive Tendency and a History of Maltreatment in Childhood

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the role of parental aggression and parental childhood maltreatment experience in the maltreatment of children in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. The study sites were two urban and two rural schools. Children aged ten to 16 years and their parents completed separate questionnaires, which included: parental childhood maltreatment; parental aggressive tendency; and maltreatment of children. Questionnaires were completed by 611 parents and 821 children. Fifty‐eight per cent of parents reported maltreatment of their children. Higher parental aggression scores were associated with an increased risk for all types of child maltreatment (relative risk ratios (RRRs) or odds ratios (ORs) ranged from 1.06–1.07 for each point higher on the aggression scale). Parental childhood maltreatment was significantly associated with an increased risk of moderate/severe physical maltreatment of children (OR = 1.80 (1.08, 3.00)); parental aggression was an explanatory factor for this association. Parental childhood maltreatment was positively associated with emotional maltreatment of children (OR = 1.89 (1.27, 2.83)). This was partly explained by parental aggression. In conclusion, high levels of child maltreatment were admitted by parents in China, suggesting the need for parenting education. Parents with a higher aggressive tendency were more likely to maltreat children. Abstract:The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different types of maltreatment on adolescents' emotional/behavioural problems in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. Adolescents aged ten to 16 years in two urban and two rural schools were invited to complete a questionnaire survey, including experiences of maltreatment and emotional/behavioural problems. In total, 791 questionnaires were eligible for analysis. Preceding‐year prevalence was 5.6 per cent for minor physical maltreatment, 27.6 per cent for moderate physical maltreatment and 4.6 per cent for severe physical maltreatment, 47.5 per cent for emotional maltreatment and 8.2 per cent for non‐contact punishment. Witnessing domestic violence was reported by 49.4 per cent of the adolescents. Emotional maltreatment was consistently associated with a higher risk of emotional/behavioural problems (relative risk ratio (RRR) ranging from 1.85–2.36) after adjusting for other maltreatment exposures and socio‐economic factors. Severe physical maltreatment showed the strongest association with behavioural problems (RRR = 4.75 (95% confidence interval 1.74, 12.98), P = 0.002). Witnessing domestic violence alone was not associated with emotional/behavioural problems in adolescents. The effect size of emotional maltreatment was greater for girls, while physical maltreatment had greater effects among boys. There was a cumulative negative effect with an increasing number of maltreatment types. Child Maltreatment in China: Comparison of Parent and Child Reports

Abstract:BackgroundReporting of the incidence of child maltreatment by parents and children might differ with implications for optimum research methodologies to determine the incidence of maltreatment. Our aim was to compare parent and child reports of child maltreatment in mainland China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was done in two primary schools and two secondary schools in urban and rural Zhejiang Province. Children aged 10–16 years and their parents completed a questionnaire survey. The same questions about child maltreatment appeared in both parent and child questionnaires and included 38 disciplinary acts (21 physical, 12 emotional, and five, non-contact). Parent–child pairs from the same household were matched to compare parent–child reports of maltreatment. We used McNemar's χ2 test and Cohen's kappa coefficient for the statistical analysis. The study was approved by University College London and Zhejiang University Research Ethics Committees. All participants gave informed consent.FindingsQuestionnaires were completed by 611 parents and 821 children, with 324 mother–child pairs and 235 father–child pairs. For mother–child pairs, the lifetime prevalences of maltreatment (mothers vs their children) were 53·4% versus 36·7% for physical acts; 76·2% versus 50·0% for emotional acts; and 19·4% versus 13·0% for non-contact acts. For father–child pairs, the lifetime prevalences of maltreatment (fathers vs their children) were 57·9% versus 39·0% for physical acts; 71·5% versus 44·3% for emotional acts; and 22·6% versus 16·2% for non-contact acts. The prevalence of emotional maltreatment in the previous year was reported more by parents than children (55·9% mothers vs 32·7% children; 54·0% fathers vs 31·5% children), with no differences for physical maltreatment and non-contact punishment. The Cohen's kappa coefficients ranged from 0·09 to 0·39, indicating low agreement between parent–child reports.InterpretationHigh levels of child maltreatment are common in China. To gain accurate figures for maltreatment, both children and caregivers should be considered in research. Consistently lower figures in children might relate to recall bias or acceptance of acts of maltreatment as normal. Association Between Violent Discipline at Home and Risk of Illness and Injury in Children: Findings from a Cross-sectional Study in Rural Western China.

Abstract:To estimate the prevalence of violent discipline at home against young children, and to explore the potential association between violent discipline at home and multifaceted health risks in children. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in twenty rural counties of weight provinces in western China. The information about child neglect and socio-demographic factors, exposure to different forms of violent discipline at home and four health outcomes was collected by face-to-face interview. Before analysis, the included interviews were weighted by the double-weighted comprehensive weighting. The proportion of children reported by primary caregivers to have experienced different forms of violent discipline by gender were calculated. To adjust the clustering effect of the survey design, two-level univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were constructed to evaluate the potential association between a child's exposure to violent discipline at home and risk of suffering from diarrhea, fever, cough and injury. A total of 3,682 weighted interviews were finally included in the analysis. The prevalence of any violent discipline, psychological aggression, any physical punishment and severe physical punishment were 76.4%, 57.5%, 68.3% and 14.1%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, after adjusting for clustering, there was still a positive association between a child's exposure to psychological aggression and risk of diarrhea (adjusted OR: 1.47, 95%CI: 1.14-1.90) and injury (adjusted OR: 1.95, 95%CI: 1.36-2.80); a child's exposure to any physical punishment and risk of diarrhea (adjusted OR: 1.36, 95%CI: 1.04-1.77), cough (adjusted OR: 1.37, 95%CI: 1.14-1.66), and injury (adjusted OR: 2.05, 95%CI: 1.37-3.06); and a child's exposure to severe physical punishment and risk of injury (adjusted OR: 2.07, 95%CI: 1.41-3.05). Considering that using violent discipline at home is prevalent in rural western China, and it could threaten young children's health, effective measures to prevent young children from violent discipline are urgently needed.
The Prevalence of Physical Maltreatment by Parents in 810 Kindergarten Children

Abstract:Objective To ascertain the prevalence of physical maltreatment by parents among kindergarten children in the past year,and to provide scientific evidence for community-based intervention measures.Methods By using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire,810 children's parents from five kindergartens in Baotou City were surveyed.Results Overall,the prevalence of physical maltreatment by parents in the past year was 74.0%;33.0% parents had ever done no-contact corporal punishment and 68.9% parents had ever made contact physical violence(67.3% belonged to minor violence,23.1% to severe violence,nobody had been assaulted very severely).The prevalence of severe violence toward children showed no statistic significant difference according to children's age(χ2=9.005,P=0.029),boys experienced more severe violence by their parents than girls(χ2=16.759,P<0.001);no statistical significant difference of the prevalence of non-contact corporal punishment and minor violence displayed for gender and different ages(χ2=0.084～4.828,P>0.05).Conclusion The situation of physical maltreatment by parents is common among kindergarten children.Boys are more likely to experience severe violence.
Physical Violence against Children by Parents among Primary School Students from a Rural Area in Shandong Province, China

Abstract:Physical violence (PV) against children by parents is a worldwide public health concern. Fewer studies explored the prevalence of PV in rural areas of China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among primary school students' parents in five rural schools located in a town of Shandong Province. Data about parental PV behaviors against their children during the past 3 months and possible risk factors of parental PV behaviors were collected. Logistic regression analyses were carried out to investigate the risk factors of parental PV behaviors against their children. Of the 978 parents investigated, the parental self-reported prevalence of PV against their children was 50.0%. Parents' favorable attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment to discipline children were found to be associated with their increased use of PV. Evidence of higher prevalence of parental PV behaviors against children identified in this sample suggests the need for programs aimed at improving parents' parenting skills in this rural area of China.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the prevalence of physical violence against children (PVAC)by parents and to explore possible related factors.Methods:In two primary schools in Liaoning Province,1164 parents of pupils in grade 1 to 6 were surveyed by a self-administered questionnaire anonymously to analyze situation about PVAC and related factors.PVAC was defined as having one or more following parent-to-child behaviors in the past three months:push,or shook a child;pinch,screw,or scratch a child;hit child's buttocks with hand;hit child's hand,foot,arm,leg or back with hand;hit child's buttocks with an object;hit child's face or head with hand;hit elsewhere (not buttocks)with an object;kicked a child with a foot or hit with a fist.Results:Of 1164 parents,53.1% reported that they had minor PVAC (51.0%)or/and severe PVAC (19.8%).Multivariate logistic regres-sion analysis indicated that following factors increased the risk of PVAC:child's male gender (OR =1.49),younger age of children (OR =1.38),poor school performance of children (OR =1.85 ),mother (OR =2.09),parents'childhood physical violence victimization experiences (OR =1.53),parents'supportive or tolerant attitudes towards corporal punishment (OR =3.15),parents'lower awareness of the harmfulness of physical violence against children (OR =2.31),and lower social economic status (OR =1.47).Conclusion:The PVAC by their parents may be com-mon in the present study.Parents'supportive or tolerant attitudes toward corporal punishment and low awareness of the harmfulness of physical violence is the main risk factors of PVAC.
Multi-level analysis of the determinants of physical domestic violence against children using longitudinal data from MINIMat mother-child cohort in Bangladesh

Abstract:Objectives: Despite high levels of physical violence against children (VAC) globally (40-50%), the literature on the determinants of VAC remains inconclusive. Most of the literature on this topic is based on cross-sectional data, and the multi-level nature of the drivers of VAC is widely ignored. This leads to model specification problems and an inability to draw causal inferences. Moreover, despite the higher prevalence of VAC in low-and middle-income countries, studies from high income countries dominate the field. We examined the determinants of physical domestic VAC to address these gaps in the literature. Methods: Data were collected between 2001 and 2020 from 762 mother-child dyads recruited in the Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab (MINIMat) study in Bangladesh. We conducted multi-level logistic regression analyses to identify the determinants of physical domestic VAC. Results: Prevalence of physical domestic violence against girls (69%) and boys (62%) was extremely high. Community-level prevalence of physical domestic VAC increased the likelihood of physical domestic VAC at the individual level across gender (girls - OR-5.66; 95% CI- 3.11-10.32; boys - OR-7.67; CI- 3.95-14.91). While physical domestic violence against mothers was not associated with physical domestic violence against girls, it reduced the likelihood of such violence against boys by 47%. Having 3 or more siblings predicted physical domestic violence against girls (OR-1.97; 95% CI- 1.01-3.81 for 3 siblings; OR-4.58; 95% CI- 2.12-9.90 for 4 or more siblings), but not against boys. While girls in Hindu families were more likely to experience this violence, the boys were not. Mother's education, employment non-governmental organization (NGO) participation and, household wealth did not predict this violence against any gender. Conclusion: We contend that physical domestic violence against mothers reflects an emphasized patriarchal culture in a family where a boy is less likely to experience physical domestic violence. Social norms and social learning theories explain the greater likelihood of a child experiencing physical domestic violence in a village with a higher level of such violence. We conclude that social norms around physical domestic VAC and patriarchal culture need to be changed to effectively address this violence.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence of child physical maltreatment (CPM) by parents in a city locating in central-western region of China and identify associated risk factors.Methods: Cross-sectional survey was carried out among a randomly sampled population of primary school students' parents in Yuncheng City. Data on parental CPM during the past 3 months, definition of CPM, Parenting Scale, parent-child interaction attitudes, social support, socio-demographic background were collected by a self-report questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the associations between CPM and related risk factors.Results: Of parents from 1,394 primary school students, there were 595 (42.7%) and 301 (21.6%) of them reported that they had minor/severe CPM behaviors toward their children during the past 3 months, respectively. The risk factors that were significantly associated with both prevalence and frequencies of minor/severe CPM included child problem behaviors, overreactivity and hostility parenting.Conclusion: CPM by parents is not uncommon in China. More attention should be paid to programs that help parents learn parenting skills and use nonviolent child discipline. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A substantial number of children in the world are regularly subjected to physical punishment by their parents as a method of upbringing. Evidence suggests that it has negative effects on the development of brain function. However, evidence regarding its association with verbal communication is limited and heterogeneous. It is also unknown whether the effects are the same in both boys and girls; especially in the contexts of developing countries, where the highest rates of physical punishment are found.

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Despite having adverse physical and mental health outcomes, harsh disciplinary methods are commonly practiced all over the world. This study aims to measure the harsh disciplinary actions taken by parents and their association with child functioning in children, aged 7 to 14 years in Punjab, Pakistan. This study is based on secondary data obtained from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF's) Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, conducted in the Punjab province from 2017 to 2018. Parents/caregivers of 19,721 children were included in the analysis. Questionnaire-based interviews were conducted, and the data collection form included sociodemographic information, questions on different "Methods of Child Discipline" and the "Child functioning module." The data was analyzed using STATA 15.0. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio and 95% CI exploring the association between harsh disciplinary methods and child functioning. More than 50% of children were exposed to severe physical, psychological, and emotional disciplinary methods. Exposure to severe physical aggression was associated with increased difficulty in learning (2.60 [1.27, 5.31]), remembering (2.83 [1.47, 5.44]), controlling behavior (1.63 [1.21, 2.18]), anxiety (1.98 [1.25, 3.13]), depression (2.57 [1.57, 4.22]) and making friends (1.94 [1.01, 3.79]). Whereas moderate physical aggression and psychological aggression were associated with (1.48 [1.19, 1.84]) and 1.5 times (1.20, 1.84) increase in difficulty in controlling behavior, respectively. Nonviolent actions were associated with protective odds for self-care (0.33 [0.17, 0.65]), communication (0.51 [0.27, 0.96]), learning (0.56 [0.33, 0.95]), remembering (0.62 [0.39, 0.90]), concentration (0.50 [0.31, 0.80]), anxiety (0.60 [0.46, 0.79]) and depression (0.67 [0.49, 0.92]). Severe disciplinary methods are detrimental to the child's personal care, mental, social, emotional, and psychological well-being, whereas nonviolent actions are associated with positive child functioning. In a third-world country such as Pakistan, this topic is widely undiscovered and understudied, thus emphasizing the need for awareness and education of parents and healthcare providers.

Abstract:This study used data from a cross-sectional household survey conducted in Wuhan (N = 985) to investigate child victimization in China. Multiple binary logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the effects of parental health and inter-parental relationship on different types of child victimization. Subsequently, two ordered logistic regressions were performed to examine the effects of parental health problems and inter-parental relationships on types of child victimization. Results indicate that 28.1% of parents in the current sample reported their children had experienced at least one type of victimization, and 14.6% reported two or more types. Furthermore, problematic inter-parental relationships and poor parental health increased the likelihood of children experiencing more than one type of victimization. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Despite recognizing the detrimental impact of parental violence on children's mental and physical health throughout their lives, violence remains an all-too-real part of life for many children around the globe. However, data on the child-reported prevalence of experienced family violence are scarce and primarily based on parental reports. This study aimed to broaden the body of evidence and measure the lifetime prevalence of child-reported experience of violent disciplinary practices perpetrated by parents and to identify its associated sociodemographic and economic factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from 5,281 Generation XXI participants recruited from 2005 to 2006 in Porto, Portugal. Parental disciplinary practices were reported by 7-year-old children using the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale. Pearson's Chi-squared test was used to compare differences in child-reported frequencies of violent disciplinary practices by sociodemographic variables. We observed statistically significant differences in rates of violent disciplinary practices according to the child's and parent's gender. Specifically, fathers exhibited a higher likelihood than mothers to engage in psychological aggression and corporal punishment, while mothers were more prone to engage in severe and very severe physical assault. When fathers were the perpetrators, boys were more inclined than girls to report all forms of violent disciplinary measures, and when mothers were the perpetrators, boys were particularly susceptible to severe and very severe physical assault compared to girls. In our study, children reported being frequently subjected to violent parental disciplinary practices, independently of family socioeconomic background. Children were more likely to experience psychological aggression and corporal punishment if they were born into high-income families, while severe and very severe physical assaults were more common among children whose parents had lower educational levels. National public awareness of the negative effects of violent disciplinary practices is urgently needed, promoting child-friendly and nonviolent approaches to discipline.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the prevalence of psychological violence against children by parents and to explore possible influencing factors.METHODS:In two primary schools from a city, located in the northeast part of China, 1 164 parents of the pupils from grade 1 to 6, were anonymously surveyed by a self-administered questionnaire, to analyze the situation of psychological violence and influencing factors.RESULTS:Of the 1 164 parents, 78.1% reported that they practised psychological violence towards their children. Compared with girls, boys were more psychologically maltreated by their parents (81.3% vs. 74.7%,P<0.01). Data from the multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that following factors increased the risk of psychological violence against children: child being male (OR=1.684); initiated by the mother (OR=1.640), parents experiences of psychologically violent victimization (OR=2.064) during their childhood, supportive or tolerant attitudes towards corporal punishment (OR=2.618) from the parents, low awareness of the harmfulness of psychological violence against children (OR=1.666) of the parents, and lower social economic status (OR=1.745) of the family, etc.CONCLUSION:Psychological violence experienced by the parents appeared very common. Prevention programs on psychological violence should be strengthened to increase the awareness of parents on this serious problem.

Abstract:This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and its associated risk factors of CPV by parents among primary school students from a rural area in Shandong province, China. In this population-based study, cross-sectional survey using cluster sampling method was conducted among primary school students’ parents in 5 rural schools located in a town of Shandong Province. Data about parental CPV behaviors during the past 3 months, attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment and CPV, family and social support and demographic background were collected by using parental self-reporting questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were carried out to investigate the risk factors of CPV. Of the 978 parents investigated, self-reported prevalence of any form of CPV was 50.0%, and the prevalences of minor CPV and severe CPV were 45.2% and 23.5%, respectively. Parents’ favorable or tolerant attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment to discipline children, parents’ CPV victimization experience in childhood and children’s poor school performance were associated with the increased risk of using minor CPV, severe CPV and any form of CPV by parents. Mothers were more likely to use minor CPV and any form of CPV. In addition, parents’ out-migrating for work in last 12 months did not influence the use of any form of CPV. CPV by parents was possibly widespread in rural areas of China, especially the severe CPV. Programs aimed to change parents’ corporal punishment concept and improve their parenting skills are urgently needed in China, particularly in rural areas.
[A retrospective survey of childhood corporal punishment by school teachers in students]

Abstract:Objective: To ascertain the prevalence of childhood corporal punishment by teachers in students, to explore the influencing factors and associations between childhood corporal punishment and psychological problems. Methods: Five hundred and twenty-eight students from a college and a technical secondary school in Hebei province were surveyed by self-administered questionnaire anonymously in Dec. 2004. The questionnaire used for this survey mainly included (1) general demographic information; (2) 5 forms of childhood corporal punishments, in this study, cases of teachers' corporal punishments were defined as those who answered positively one or more of the 5 questions relating to childhood corporal punishment by school teachers occurring before the age of 16 years; (3) Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90); (4) Youth Risk Behaviours. Results: Overall, 57.6% of students reported having been corporally punished at least one time, one of four forms of corporal punishment by teachers before age of 16 years, the four forms corporal punishment were non-contact corporal punishment, e.g., running for punishment, repeat-doing homework many times for punishment, standing for punishment, kneel down for punishment, not allowing to eat, sending outside in winter, etc. (53.4%), hitting/kicking/pushing very hard with open hands/fist/feet/other part of body (16.1%), beating with an object (10.2%), and locking in a small compartment/tying with rope (0.2%). No students reported having been choked, or burned/scalded, or stabbed with a sharp object by the teachers. Males had a significantly higher overall prevalence rate than females (66.4% vs. 46.6%, chi(2) = 21.01, P = 0.000). There was no statistically significant association between a history of childhood corporal punishment and the three other demographic indicators, which included residence region (rural and non-rural area) prior to 16 years of age, parental education level, and whether the respondent lived in a single or multiple children family. Compared with their peers who had not experienced childhood corporal punishment by teachers, the students with two or more forms of corporal punishments by teachers showed significantly higher scores (punished group vs. unpunished group) of psychological symptoms of somatization (0.78 vs. 0.42), obsessiveness (1.22 vs. 0.98), interpersonal sensitivity (1.24 vs. 0.89), depression (1.06 vs. 0.76), anxiety (0.90 vs. 0.64), hostility (1.11 vs. 0.68), paranoid ideation (1.11 vs. 0.71) and psychoticism (0.84 vs. 0.56), and showed significantly higher rates in sadness (54.7% vs. 26.3%), drunk (37.2% vs. 20.1%), involving in physical fighting (15.1% vs. 3.6%) in the past year and current smoking (36.0% vs. 14.5%). Conclusions: The problem of corporal punishment by teachers is common in schools, and the problem has a significant correlation with youth mental health problems. The results highlighted urgent needs to increase public awareness on children rights, creating learning-friendly environment in school.
