Abstract:The identification and monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms (CBs) is critical for ensuring water security. However, traditional methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive and are not ideal for large-scale monitoring. In operational monitoring, the existing remote sensing methods are also not ideal due to complex surface features, unstable models, and poor robustness thresholds. Here, a novel algorithm, the pseudo-Forel-Ule index (P-FUI), is developed and validated to identify cyanobacterial blooms based on Terra MODIS, Landsat-8 OLI, Sentinel-2 MSI, and Sentinel-3 OLCI sensors. First, three parameters of P-FUI, that is, brightness Y, saturation s, and hue angle α, were calculated based on remote sensing reflectance. Then, the robustness thresholds of the parameters were determined by statistical analysis for a frequency distribution histogram. We validated the accuracy of our approach using high-spatial-resolution satellite data with the aid of field investigations. Considerable results were obtained by using water color differences directly. The overall classification accuracy is more than 93.76%, and the user's accuracy and producer's accuracy are more than 94.60% and 94.00%, respectively, with a kappa coefficient of 0.91. The identified cyanobacterial blooms' spatial distribution with high, medium, and low intensity produced consistent results compared to those based on satellite data. Impact factors were also discussed, and the algorithm was shown to be tolerant of perturbations by clouds and high turbidity. This new approach enables operational monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) pose significant environmental threats in China's large, shallow, and turbid lakes. Current satellite remote sensing methods for monitoring CyanoHABs in turbid water are limited in accuracy and frequency. The commonly used spectral index approaches often misidentify CyanoHABs by highly turbid water, and the segmentation threshold algorithms are not robust enough. Additionally, the dynamic nature of CyanoHABs requires high temporal resolution, which commonly used remote sensing data fail to provide. This study proposed a novel monitoring method utilizing a new spectral index, Anti-Turbid Algal Bloom Index (ATBI), specifically designed to minimize the impact of highly turbid water, coupled with an iterative triangle algorithm for automated ATBI threshold determination. We applied this approach to MODIS data from both Terra and Aqua satellites, achieving a temporal resolution of 0.5 days. The validation results show that the new method has a high accuracy with an F1-score of 0.85, which is higher than the commonly used algorithms with an F1-score of approximately 0.60. Utilizing this approach, we analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of CyanoHABs in China's large lakes from 2000 to 2022, including Lakes Hulunhu, Chaohu and Taihu. Notably, Lake Hulunhu exhibited an increase in frequency and duration of CyanoHABs, while Lakes Chaohu and Taihu showed a rise in duration but a decline in frequency post 2018 and 2017, respectively. Air temperature and wind speed are critical factors influencing CyanoHABs variations in these lakes. Comparative analysis using data from Terra, Aqua, and both satellites combined demonstrated that the integrated data captures more accurate CyanoHABs information. These findings showed that our method can enhance CyanoHABs monitoring capabilities and offer insights for future research.

Abstract:Algal blooms are a major environmental challenge for lakes and reservoirs and pose severe threats to water on both aquatic and human health. Conventional algorithms used for algal bloom detection based on remote sensing reflectance proved to be effective in some lakes. However, it is still difficult to obtain high accuracy for multiple lakes using single-threshold-based detection. Currently, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been applied to pinpoint algal bloom locations with excellent results, but the ability of different ML models to be applied in different lakes is still unknown. This article presents the performance of algal bloom detection with commonly used ML algorithms in Chinese eutrophic inland lakes based on Sentinel-2 images. A series of comprehensive tests for accuracy, stability, and robustness was designed for four ML models, including random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting, artificial neural network, and support vector machine, which were tested in Lake Taihu, Lake Chaohu, and Lake Dianchi. In addition, the index-based methods, including floating algae index and adjusted floating algae index, were also calculated for comparison with ML methods. The results showed that the RF model outperformed other ML models. The comparison results between the RF model and algal indexes revealed that the overall accuracy of RF remained above 0.90. Even with a single lake dataset used as training samples, the RF still maintained a fairly high accuracy of 0.88 for other lakes. To summarize, the four ML models demonstrate promising potential for algal bloom detection across different lakes and provide a practical reference for further applications.

Spatial and temporal distribution analysis of dominant algae in Lake Taihu based on ocean and land color instrument data

Abstract:The proliferation of algal blooms can lead to environmental issues. The phytoplankton responsible for these blooms are diverse. Different species of bloom-forming algae have distinct characteristics and hazards, and therefore need different treatment methods. An accurate and quick determination of the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of different algal species is crucial for lake ecological restoration. Based on the differences in remote sensing reflectance ( R rs ) of various typical algae species in eutrophic lakes (including Microcystis aeruginosa , Aphanizomenon sp., and Pseudanabaena sp. in Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus quadricauda in Chlorophytes), difference index and algae distinguishing index were developed to differentiate algae species. A validation, using an independent dataset from an indoor experiment and in-situ-measured and satellite-image-derived R rs , showed that the algorithm can provide reliable results (overall accuracies of 81.97%, 81.25%, and 60.42%, respectively). According to Ocean and Land Color Instrument images of Lake Taihu in the period of 2016 to 2020, Microcystis was the dominant algae, followed by Pseudanabaena and Aphanizomenon . The dominance of the two types of Chlorophytes was less pronounced. The proportion of Microcystis as the dominant algae was highest in summer, while the proportion of Pseudanabaena peaked in winter. The proportion of Aphanizomenon varied slightly throughout the year, while the proportion of the two Chlorophytes peaked in winter. In terms of spatial distribution, the patterns in spring and autumn were relatively similar. In summer, approximately 80% of the lake was dominated by Microcystis. In winter, Chlorella and Scenedesmus were more prevalent along the southeastern shore of Lake Taihu. The construction and application of this model can provide a technical support for prediction and prevention of blooms in inland lakes.

Abstract:Water color is a crucial optical indicator of water quality, polluted water bodies often show water color anomalies. To comprehensively understand the occurrence of water color anomalies in inland lakes, an integrated method was designed using the hue angle based on the Forel-Ule Index (FUI) model, and other remote sensing indices, including the Turbid Water Index (TWI), Floating Algae Index (FAI), and Cyanobacteria and Macrophytes Index (CMI). Based on all available Landsat-8 OLI images from 2013 to 2020, continuous monitoring was conducted in three different lakes in the middle of the Yangtze River, China. The results demonstrated that: (1) The proposed method can accurately identify algal blooms, high sediment loads, and eutrophication from the abnormal water color areas; (2) The calculated hue angles of sediment-dominated water were significantly higher than those of algal blooms and aquatic vegetation, providing a noticeable visual discoloration of water; (3) These water color anomalies exhibited significant correlations with the water quality and environmental conditions. This study serves as an example for accurate and spatially continuous assessment of water color anomaly and supports practical information to facilitate local water environment conservation.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial blooms (CABs) of inland waters is a typical and severe challenge for water resources management and environment protection. An accurate and spatial continuous risk assessment of CABs is critical for prediction and preparedness in advance. In this study, a multivariate integrated risk assessment (MIRA) method of CABs in inland waters was proposed. MIRA was simplified with the trophic levels, cyanobacterial and other aquatic plant condition using remote sensing indexes, including the Trophic State Index (TSI), Floating Algae Index (FAI) and Cyanobacteria and Macrophytes Index (CMI). First, dates of risk assessment were carefully selected based on TSI. Then, we obtained the trophic levels, cyanobacterial and other aquatic plant condition of water using TSI, CMI and FAI on the selected date, and further scored them pixel by pixel to quantify the risk value. Finally, the CABs risk of CABs in water was accurately assessed based on the pixel risk value. Based on Landsat 8 OLI dataset, MIRA were executed in three different lakes of Wuhan urban agglomeration (WUA) with different trophic state, and validated with water quality data and the results of relating studies. The results demonstrated that the risk of CABs in Lake LongGan was overall higher than that in Lake LiangZi and Lake FuTou. And the risk of CABs in east part of Lake Longgan is high than the other parts. Seasonally, the risk level ranking in Lake LiangZi was the highest in summer, while lowest in winter. However, the seasonal risk ranking was spring, summer, autumn, and winter in Lake LongGan. Based on the comparisons with monthly water quality classification results and results of existing study, including trophic level, ecology risk and algal extent, It showed that MIRA method is valuable for spatial continues and accurately identifying the risk of CABs in inland waters with potential eutrophication trends.

Abstract:Accurate monitoring and classification of algal species, as well as the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration, are crucial for assessing water quality and managing aquatic ecosystems. Algal blooms, particularly those involving toxic species, pose significant threats to water resources, aquatic life, and human health. Traditional remote sensing methods lack the precision and specificity needed to address these challenges effectively. This study aims to develop a more accurate, flexible, and comprehensive approach to chlorophyll-a concentration inversion using hyperspectral data By leveraging the rich spectral information provided by hyperspectral data and combining Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNN), we significantly improve the accuracy of chlorophyll-a concentration inversion. Preliminary measurements in our study area showed chlorophyll-a concentrations exceeding $30 \mu \mathrm{g} / \mathrm{L}$, indicating a eutrophic state. Experimental results demonstrate that this combined approach enhances the ${\mathrm {R}}^{2}$ Coefficient of Determination) between predicted and actual chlorophyll-a concentrations from 0.71 to 0.94, outperforming traditional models. This advancement indicates a significant improvement in aquatic remote sensing technology, providing a more precise and reliable method for water quality monitoring and understanding aquatic ecosystem dynamics.
Mapping Algal Blooms in Aquatic Ecosystems Using Long-Term Landsat Data: A Case Study of Yuqiao Reservoir from 1984–2022

Abstract:Water eutrophication poses a dual threat to ecological and human well-being. Gaining insight into the intricate dynamics of phytoplankton bloom phenology holds paramount importance in comprehending the complexities of aquatic ecosystems. Remote sensing technologies have gained attention for mapping algal blooms (ABs) effectively, but distinguishing them from aquatic vegetation (AV) remains challenging due to their similar spectral characteristics. To address this issue, we propose a meticulous three-step methodology for AB mapping employing long-term Landsat imagery. Initially, a multi-index decision tree model (DTM) is deployed to identify the vegetation signal (VS) encompassing both AV and ABs. Subsequently, the annual maximum growth range of AV is precisely delineated using vegetation presence frequency (VPF) in conjunction with normal and low water level imagery. Lastly, ABs are accurately extracted by inversely intersecting VS and AV. The performance of our approach is thoroughly validated using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) based on a Gaofen-2 Panchromatic Multi-spectral (GF-2 PMS) image, demonstrating strong consistency with notable values of 0.822 longitudinally, 0.771 latitudinally, and 0.797 overall. The method is applied to Landsat images from 1984 to 2022 to quantify the spatial distribution and temporal variations of ABs in Yuqiao Reservoir—a significant national water body spanning a vast area of 135 km2 in China. Our findings reveal a pervasive and uneven dispersion of ABs, predominantly concentrated in the northern sector. Notably, the intensity of ABs experienced an initial surge from 1984 to 2008, followed by a subsequent decline from 2014 to 2022. Importantly, anthropogenic activities, such as fish cage culture, alongside pollution stemming from nearby industrial and agricultural sources, exert a profound influence on the dynamics of water eutrophication. Fortunately, governmental initiatives focused on water purification exhibit commendable efficacy in mitigating the ecological burden on reservoirs and upholding water quality. The methodological framework presented in this study boasts remarkable precision in AB extraction and exhibits considerable potential in addressing the needs of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Lakes at a global level have increasingly experienced algal blooms in recent decades, and it has become a key challenge facing the aquatic ecological environment. Remote sensing technology is considered an effective means of algal bloom detection. This study proposed a novel algal bloom detection index (ABDI) based on Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) data. The ABDI was evaluated by application to Hulun Lake, China. Areas of algal bloom detected by the ABDI were consistent with those identified from visual interpretation maps [the coefficient of determination = 0.87; root-mean-square error = 0.67 km2; overall accuracy >98%; Kappa coefficient >0.88]. The ABDI was less sensitive to thin cloud and turbid water compared to the floating algae index (FAI), adjusted floating algae index (AFAI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Algal bloom dynamics in relation to meteorological factors in Hulun Lake were analysed using time-series MSI data, which indicated that algal blooms occurred mainly in summer and were distributed in the near-shore waters. Temperature, precipitation, sunshine duration, and wind speed as well as human activities were found to influence spatio-temporal patterns of algal blooms. The results indicate that ABDI is applicable to the detection of algal blooms under a variety of environmental conditions occurring in other regions, such as in the Taihu, Dianchi, and Chaohu lakes and the Yellow Sea. The results of this study can provide an operational algorithm for the detection of algal blooms and environmental management.

Abstract:With the increasing problem of eutrophication, lacustrine ecosystem can undergo complex changes, often resulting in a shift from a clear macrophyte-dominated state to a turbid phytoplankton-dominated state. However, it's not clear how lake transitions occur at regional and global scales. This is due to a lack of long-term monitoring and an effective algorithm that can distinguish floating/emergent aquatic vegetation (FEAV), submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and algal bloom (AB). This paper presents a novel three-step classification algorithm based on Landsat imagery, (ie., vegetation and bloom indices (VBI) algorithm): (1) to distinguish between aquatic vegetation (AV) and non-aquatic vegetation (non-AV) extents by an aquatic vegetation index (AVI) derived from tasseled cap transformation; (2) to identify FEAV and SAV within AV extent by using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and (3) to extract AB from non-AV extent with floating algae index (FAI). The performance of the VBI algorithm was validated using 1307 field samples collected across 22 lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLY) in China, with a pooled overall accuracy of 84.49%. Finally, the VBI algorithm was applied to Landsat data from 1985 to 2021 to quantify the temporal changes of FEAV, SAV and AB in large lakes (i.e., > 50 km2) along the MLY. Within these lakes, AV showed a significant decrease over the past 37 years, mainly due to the decrease of SAV; while AB occurred with higher frequency and in more lakes. The transition from a macrophyte-dominated state to a phytoplankton-dominated aquatic systems is still ongoing in the MLY area. This study shows outstanding innovation in the construction of a new classification index (i.e., AVI), and the method of calculating the adaptive threshold, which makes VBI algorithm have great potential in mapping long-term changes and capturing transformation between lake communities on a global scale.
Monitoring Cyanobacteria Bloom in Dianchi Lake Based on Ground-Based Multispectral Remote-Sensing Imaging: Preliminary Results

Abstract:Some lakes in China have undergone serious eutrophication, with cyanobacterial blooms occurring frequently. Dynamic monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms is important. At present, the traditional lake-survey-based cyanobacterial bloom monitoring is spatiotemporally limited and requires considerable human and material resources. Although satellite remote sensing can rapidly monitor large-scale cyanobacterial blooms, clouds and other factors often mean that effective images cannot be obtained. It is also difficult to use this method to dynamically monitor and manage aquatic environments and provide early warnings of cyanobacterial blooms in lakes and reservoirs. In contrast, ground-based remote sensing can operate under cloud cover and thus act as a new technical method to dynamically monitor cyanobacterial blooms. In this study, ground-based remote-sensing technology was applied to multitemporal, multidirectional, and multiscene monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms in Dianchi Lake via an area array multispectral camera mounted on a rotatable cloud platform at a fixed station. Results indicate that ground-based imaging remote sensing can accurately reflect the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of cyanobacterial blooms and provide timely and accurate data for salvage treatment and early warnings. Thus, ground-based multispectral remote-sensing data can operationalize the dynamic monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms. The methods and results from this study can provide references for monitoring such blooms in other lakes.

A Novel Algorithm to Estimate Phytoplankton Carbon Concentration in Inland Lakes Using Sentinel-3 OLCI Images

Abstract:Phytoplankton carbon, an important biogeochemical and ecological parameter, plays a critical role in the carbon cycle and in global warming reduction. Estimation of phytoplankton carbon in inland waters on a large scale using remote sensing is useful for understanding, evaluating, and monitoring the carbon dynamics, and, in particular, for determining the spatial–temporal variation of primary production in inland waters. In a correlation analysis of the phytoplankton carbon concentration and water components, the result revealed no significant correlation between the chlorophyll-a concentration and phytoplankton carbon concentration in inland waters. However, the absorption peak height of particles at 675 nm, which is defined as the absorption at 675 nm subtracted by that at 660 nm, was found to be closely correlated with the phytoplankton carbon concentration. Thus, the absorption peak height of particles at 675 nm could be used as an indicator of the phytoplankton carbon concentration. A semianalytical method based on the remote-sensing reflectance in Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) bands 8, 9, and 17 was developed to derive the absorption peak of particles at a wavelength of 675 nm. Finally, an algorithm for estimating the phytoplankton carbon concentration in inland waters using OLCI bands 8, 9, and 17 was constructed. From 2013 to 2018, eight field campaigns were conducted in inland lakes in different seasons, and the optical properties, optically active water components, and phytoplankton carbon concentrations were obtained. An assessment of its accuracy using an independent data set demonstrated that the algorithm performance is acceptable (mean absolute percentage error, 48.6%, and root mean square error, 0.36 mg/L). As a demonstration, the algorithm was successfully applied to map the phytoplankton carbon concentration in Taihu Lake and Chaohu Lake, China, using OLCI images acquired on December 5, 201-, and August 5, 2018 and December 8, 2017, and August 7, 2017, and the spatial variation of the phytoplankton carbon concentration in Taihu Lake and Chaohu Lake was thoroughly examined. A semianalytical remote-sensing method, instead of a traditional time-consuming approach, was developed in this article, which can be used to estimate phytoplankton carbon concentration quickly, and provides an effective way to map the phytoplankton carbon concentration in inland water on a large scale.

Abstract:The occurrence of algal blooms in drinking water sources and recreational water bodies have been increasing and causing severe environmental problems worldwide, particularly when blooms dominated by Microcystis spp. Bloom prediction and early warning mechanisms are becoming increasingly important for preventing harmful algal blooms in freshwater ecosystems. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (CFpars) have been widely used to evaluate growth scope and photosynthetic efficiency of phytoplankton. According to our 2-year monthly monitor datasets in Lake Erhai, a simple but convenient method was established to predict Microcystis blooms and algal cell densities based on a CFpar representing maximal photochemical quantum yield of Photosystems II (PSII) of algae. Generalized linear mixed models, used to identify the key factors related to the phytoplankton biomass in Lake Erhai, showed significant correlations between Chl a concentration and both the light attenuation coefficient and water temperature. We fitted seasonal trends of CFpars (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm') and algal cell densities into the trigonometric regression to predict their seasonal variations and the autocorrelation function was applied to calculate the time lag between them. We found that the time lag only existed between Fv/Fm from blue channel and algal cell densities even both Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm' show the significant non-linear dynamics relationships with algal cell densities. The peak values of total algal cell density, cyanobacteria density and Microcystis density followed the foregoing peak value of Fv/Fm from blue channel with a time lagged around 40 days. Therefore, we could predict the possibilities of Microcystis bloom and estimate the algal cell densities in Lake Erhai ahead of 40 days based on the trends of Fv/Fm values from blue channel. The results from our study implies that the corresponding critical thresholds between Fv/Fm value and bloom occurrence, which might give new insight into prediction of cyanobacteria blooms and provide a convenient and efficient way for establishment of early warning of cyanobacteria bloom in eutrophic aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Multicollinearity between feature bands is one of the main interferences in the process of retrieving chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in water bodies from hyperspectral data. Meanwhile, the model capability is also a decisive factor for inversion accuracy. To eliminate multicollinearity between feature bands and enhance data-driven of the retrieve of Chl-a concentration, this study proposed a feature bands selection strategy (FD-FI) based on knee-point-detection and variance inflation factor (VIF). Then, to realize model-driven, nine machine learning algorithms are combined to construct a MixModel, which was compared with other models. Chl-a concentration in Nansi Lake was estimated using “Zhuhai-No.1” remote sensing images and field measured data. The results show that the FD-FI strategy can effectively eliminate multicollinearity between bands or band combinations (VIF < 7). Using the same model, the strategy proposed in this study has a higher accuracy than existing strategies. In the five-fold cross-validation, XGBoostFD-FI obtained the best performance with Coefficient of Determinatio (R2) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.8351 and 6.6477 μg/L. In addition, combined with MixModel, the FD-FI strategy further improves the accuracy of Chl-a retrieval with R2 = 0.8664 and RMSE = 5.7926 μg/L. When the model was applied to remote sensing images, the Chl-a spatial distribution obtained by the FD-FI strategy on the four models was the most consistent. MixModel is more sensitive to very high and low Chl-a concentrations, and its generalisation is more stable. Overall, this study provides an innovative approach for the selection of feature bands and model construction for Chl-a retrieval from inland lakes.

New method improves extraction accuracy of lake water bodies in Central Asia

Abstract:Lakes play an important role in terrestrial ecosystems and have a significant impact on human production and life. Remote sensing techniques have been widely used to monitor changes in lakes. Several studies have been conducted pertaining to extraction of lake bodies using optical remote sensing images; however, owing to the influence of ice and snow in the lake and other parameters such as noise, the accuracy and stability of lake extraction still need to be improved. This study designed a new method by combing K-means clustering and the flood fill method (KCFFM) to improve the accuracy and stability of extraction results from complex backgrounds. Using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) data for five lakes in Central Asia, the accuracy and stability of KCFFM in summer and winter were evaluated and compared with those of five other methods. KCFFM showed the highest accuracy and stability among all the methods, especially during the lake ice period. For KCFFM, the Kappa coefficient was greater than 0.97 and 0.92 and the overall accuracy was greater than 99% and 98% in summer and winter, respectively. The area error rate of KCFFM was less than 3%, except for Lake Alakol (less than 10%). In addition, KCFFM significantly decreased the area error rate compared to other methods (1% to 15% in summer and 10% to 50% in winter). The proposed method optimized the time continuity, accuracy, and stability of lake body extraction. Thus, KCFFM can provide valuable basic data for monitoring lake water bodies.

Evaluation of trophic state for inland waters through combining Forel-Ule Index and inherent optical properties

Abstract:Eutrophication is a severe environmental pollution problem for inland waters and poses significant threats to the water safety. Monitoring trophic state of inland waters using optical remote sensing generally requires the inversion of water quality parameters, such as chlorophyll-a, secchi depth, etc. However, the accurate inversion of these individual indicators remains challenging, while the associated retrieval errors can propagate and degrade the evaluation of trophic state. Hence, we proposed a novel monitoring method by developing a Trophic State Index (TSI) based on optical remote-sensing parameters, i.e., Forel-Ule index (FUI) and non-water absorption coefficient at 674 nm (referred to as at-w(674)) retrieved from Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) imagery. The estimated TSI showed favorable correspondence with observed water quality data, including coefficient of determination (r2 = 0.91), root mean squared error (RMSE = 5.54), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE = 10.69%). Using the Sentinel-3 OLCI data, the proposed method also had very good performance in the field spectrum (MAPE = 5.25 % , RMSE = 3.36). The monthly trophic state evaluation also showed congruence (MAPE = 12.51 % , RMSE = 6.41) with surface water quality monthly report (SWQMR) from the Ministry of Environment and Ecology of the People's Republic of China. The monthly TSI showed favorable agreement for 23 ungauged lakes (RMSE = 7.26, MAPE = 12.78%), indicating potential utility for regional lake water quality monitoring. The proposed method was then applied to 47 other large (>50 km2) water bodies in the Middle-and-Lower watershed of Yangtze River and the Huaihe watershed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variation of trophic state from 2016 to 2020. The TSI results revealed several lakes, such as Lake Honghu and Lake Luoma, with rapidly deteriorating water quality during the study period, while other lakes show relative improvement (e.g., Xiashan Reservoir), indicating unbalanced environmental pressure over the region. Overall, this study showed promising performance and potential for satellite-based monitoring of regional aquatic environments.

A simple method for algal species discrimination in East China Sea, using multiple satellite imagery

Abstract:Abstract Satellites can help monitor harmful algal blooms in coastal regions. Methods have been developed using different satellite missions. However, it is necessary to develop a simple and useful method for discriminating harmful algal species that could be applied to multi-source satellite remote sensing reflectance spectra ( $${R}_{\mathrm{rs}}(\lambda ))$$ R rs ( λ ) ) . In this study, based on the bio-optical model, a backscattering indicator, b bp-index ( green ), was found to be useful for species identification ( Karenia mikimotoi and Prorocentrum donghaiense ) combined with the red tide index (RI) in water blooms in the East China Sea (ECS). The MODIS, GOCI, and MERIS data collected between 2004 and 2020 were consistent for bloom discrimination, determining that K. mikimotoi exhibited lower b bp-index ( green ) values than P. donghaiense . The classification of the blooms is based on the following criteria: $${R}_{\mathrm{rs}}(555)$$ R rs ( 555 ) < 0.014 sr −1 and RI > 2.8 and (1) b bp-index ( green ) > 1.2 $$\times {10}^{-3}$$ × 10 - 3 , classified as P. donghaiense blooms or (2) b bp-index ( green ) < 1.2 $$\times {10}^{-3}$$ × 10 - 3 , classified as K. mikimotoi blooms. The inclusion of the RI is necessary to directly detect the bloom area. Local bloom reports have confirmed the effectiveness of the bloom discrimination method. In addition, the advantages and limitations of the proposed method are discussed.

Spatio-Temporal Variations and Driving Forces of Harmful Algal Blooms in Chaohu Lake: A Multi-Source Remote Sensing Approach

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (hereafter HABs) pose significant threats to aquatic health and environmental safety. Although satellite remote sensing can monitor HABs at a large-scale, it is always a challenge to achieve both high spatial and high temporal resolution simultaneously with a single earth observation system (EOS) sensor, which is much needed for aquatic environment monitoring of inland lakes. This study proposes a multi-source remote sensing-based approach for HAB monitoring in Chaohu Lake, China, which integrates Terra/Aqua MODIS, Landsat 8 OLI, and Sentinel-2A/B MSI to attain high temporal and spatial resolution observations. According to the absorption characteristics and fluorescence peaks of HABs on remote sensing reflectance, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) algorithm for MODIS, the floating algae index (FAI) and NDVI combined algorithm for Landsat 8, and the NDVI and chlorophyll reflection peak intensity index (ρchl) algorithm for Sentinel-2A/B MSI are used to extract HAB. The accuracies of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), floating algae index (FAI), and chlorophyll reflection peak intensity index (ρchl) are 96.1%, 95.6%, and 93.8% with the RMSE values of 4.52, 2.43, 2.58 km2, respectively. The combination of NDVI and ρchl can effectively avoid misidentification of water and algae mixed pixels. Results revealed that the HAB in Chaohu Lake breaks out from May to November; peaks in June, July, and August; and more frequently occurs in the western region. Analysis of the HAB’s potential driving forces, including environmental and meteorological factors of temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours, and wind, indicated that higher temperatures and light rain favored this HAB. Wind is the primary factor in boosting the HAB’s growth, and the variation of a HAB’s surface in two days can reach up to 24.61%. Multi-source remote sensing provides higher observation frequency and more detailed spatial information on a HAB, particularly the HAB’s long-short term changes in their area.

Abstract:The Forel Ule water color index (FUI) based on satellite inversion can characterize the comprehensive characteristics of water quality on a large spatiotemporal scale. The high-frequency observations and rich historical data of the MODIS surface reflectance product (MODIS-500 m) provide important data support for monitoring the FUI of inland lakes. However, MODIS-500 m has only three bands in the visible light range, resulting in significant uncertainty in FUI inversion. To address this problem, this study developed an improved FUI inversion model using 500 synthetic spectra covering natural waters. The model, with a performance threshold set at 170° (FUI = 8), used a segmented algorithm across the entire color space. Validated with on-site measurement datasets (3500 samples), the model exhibited excellent performance, with mean relative error (MRE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.71 % and 3.63°, respectively. Compared to existing models, it was more suitable for long-term FUI inversion in various types of lakes, particularly in eutrophic regions. Subsequently, the model was applied to MODIS-500 m observations from 2000 to 2022, revealing the spatiotemporal dynamics of FUI in 180 large lakes and reservoirs (hereinafter referred to as lakes) in China. The results indicated that the long-term mean FUI in the study area was 9, with 7 and 12 in the western and eastern regions, respectively, showing a distinct spatial distribution of "blue in the west and green in the east." The mean change rate of hue angle for all lakes was -0.085°/yr, showing an overall decreasing trend. Environmental factors' relative contributions to long-term water color changes in each lake region were quantified using the multiple general linear model (GLM). Although each lake region exhibited different driving forces, they were primarily influenced by vegetation, lake surface area, and anthropogenic factors. Additionally, the seasonal types of lake water color were analyzed, with the west and east showing opposite patterns, reflecting the significant influence of topographic features and seasonal changes in climate on water color. The research results provide techniques for accurate inversion of FUI using MODIS-500 m data, while deepening the understanding of long-term water color changes in inland lakes in China.

Abstract:As cyanobacteria blooms occur in many types of inland water, routine monitoring that is fast and accurate is important for environment and drinking water protection. Compared to field investigations, satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective method for monitoring cyanobacteria blooms. However, conventional remote sensing monitoring methods are labor intensive and time consuming, especially when processing long-term images. In this study, we embedded related processing procedures in Google Earth Engine, developed an operational cyanobacteria bloom monitoring workflow. Using this workflow, we measured the spatiotemporal patterns of cyanobacteria blooms in China’s Taihu Lake from 2000 to 2018. The results show that cyanobacteria bloom patterns in Taihu Lake have significant spatial and temporal differentiation: the interannual coverage of cyanobacteria blooms had two peaks, and the condition was moderate before 2006, peaked in 2007, declined rapidly after 2008, remained moderate and stable until 2015, and then reached another peak around 2017; bays and northwest lake areas had heavier cyanobacteria blooms than open lake areas; most cyanobacteria blooms primarily occurred in April, worsened in July and August, then improved after October. Our analysis of the relationship between cyanobacteria bloom characteristics and environmental driving factors indicates that: from both monthly and interannual perspectives, meteorological factors are positively correlated with cyanobacteria bloom characteristics, but as for nutrient loadings, they are only positively correlated with cyanobacteria bloom characteristics from an interannual perspective. We believe reducing total phosphorous, together with restoring macrophyte ecosystem, would be the necessary long-term management strategies for Taihu Lake. Our workflow provides an automatic and rapid approach for the long-term monitoring of cyanobacteria blooms, which can improve the automation and efficiency of routine environmental management of Taihu Lake and may be applied to other similar inland waters.
