Abstract:Mesogen-containing amphiphilic block copolymers have shown extremely abundant self-assembly behaviors because of the liquid crystalline (LC) alignment within the assemblies. However, development of an understanding of the self-assembly behaviors of these amphiphilic LC polymers is still constrained by the low assembly concentration and complex kinetic effects. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful technique to prepare polymer assemblies at high solids content with good repeatability. Taking advantage of PISA, we systematically study the self-assembly behaviors of a series of mesogen-containing triblock copolymers poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate) (PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA), which are prepared by seeded reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization of FMA with PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles or vesicles as the seeds. When PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles are used, the morphology of the PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA assemblies evolves from spheroid to phase-segregated sphere, followed by phase-segregated spheroid, and eventually to cylinder, while the assemblies undergo a vesicle-to-micelle transition with a framboidal intermediate when PDMA-b-PBzMA vesicles are used as the seeds. These spherical micelles further fuse to cylinders or large spheres depending on the DPs of PBzMA and PFMA blocks. The LC ordering of the PFMA blocks is examined by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction; the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks is studied with TEM and atomic force microscopy. These experiments evince that the formation of the ellipsoidal and cylindrical micelles is driven by the LC alignment of PFMA blocks, while the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks complicates the ultimate morphology through modulating the size of PFMA nanodomains. The interplay of the hydrophobic interaction among PBzMA blocks, lipophobic interaction, and LC ordering of PFMA blocks thus generates the above self-assembly behaviors.

Abstract:A well-defined amphiphilic centipede-like copolymer of styrene and methacrylic acid (PS-PS-PMAA) was synthesized by the combination of living anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic approach involves the first coupling reaction of polystyrene (PS) backbone bearing 1,1-diphenylethene (DPE) pendant groups with living polystyryllithium (PSLi), and sequential anionic polymerization of t-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) initiated by resulting 1,1-diphenylmethyl anion, and final hydrolysis of obtained PS-PS-PtBMA. The centipede-like copolymer PS-PS-PMAA was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, GPC, and SLS measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of PS-PS-PMAA in water was determined by fluorescence probe technique. The self-assembly behavior of PS-PS-PMAA in water-THF mixture was observed by TEM. The results showed that the micellar morphology can be varied, such as vesicle, sphere, and agglomerate, depending on the THF content. These phenomena are worthy of further research in polymer physics field.
Influence of Solvent on the RAFT-mediated Polymerization of Benzyl Methacrylate (bzma) and How to Overcome the Thermodynamic/kinetic Limitation of Morphology Evolution During Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been demonstrated to be a powerful strategy to produce polymeric nano-objects of various morphologies. Dependent on the solubility of monomers, PISA is usually classified into two formulations as dispersion polymerization or emulsion polymerization, which may undergo quite different processes of polymerization and morphology transition. Generally, chain propagation of the solvophobic blocks will induce the morphology transition of the nano-objects from spherical micelles to higher order morphologies. However, the limitation of morphology evolution is often observed during PISA, and how to overcome the trapped spherical micelles obviously depends on case-by-case analysis. Herein, RAFT-mediated PISA of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) in different formulations is investigated by varying the solvent composition (the mass ratio of ethanol/water). The polymerization kinetics, nucleation, and morphology transitions are quite different between these different PISA formulations. The morphology transition of spherical micelles, to worm-like micelles, and finally to vesicles is only observed at a moderate ratio of ethanol/water (5/5, w/w). At either a higher ratio of ethanol/water (7/3, w/w) or lower ratio of ethanol/water (3/7, w/w), morphology transitions of spherical micelles to the higher order ones are both limited, but the limited morphology transitions are caused by a different mechanism. The entrapped spherical micelles at ethanol/water = 7/3 (w/w) are determined by thermodynamic factors, and morphology transition can be achieved by using a shorter solvophilic polymer as the macro-RAFT agent, while the spherical micelles obtained at ethanol/water = 3/7 (w/w) are kinetically trapped, which can be overcome by copolymerization of some other monomers to improve the flexibility of solvophobic blocks. This work is promising as it provides a principle to overcome the limitations of morphology evolution in different cases and develops the design for formulations of PISA.

Abstract:A series of linear amphiphilic pentablock terpolymer PAAx-b-PS48-b-PEO46-b-PS48-b-PAAx (AxS48O46S48Ax) with various lengths x of the PAA block (x = 15, 40, 60, and 90) were synthesized via a two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using Br-poly(ethylene oxide)-Br (Br-PEO46-Br) as the macroinitiator, styrene (St) as the first monomer, and tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) as the second monomer, followed with the hydrolysis of PtBA blocks. The AxS48O46S48Ax pentablock terpolymers formed micelles in dilute aqueous solution, of which the morphologies were dependent on the length x of the PAA block. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential measurement were employed to investigate the morphologies, chain structures, size, and size distribution of the obtained micelles. The morphology of AxS48O46S48Ax micelles changed from spherical vesicles with ordered porous membranes to long double nanotubes, then to long nanotubes with inner modulated nanotubes or short nanotubes, and finally, to spherical micelles or large compound vesicles with spherical micelles inside when x increased from 15 to 90. The hydrophobic PS blocks formed the walls of vesicles and nanotubes as well as the core of spherical micelles. The hydrophilic PEO and PAA block chains were located on the surfaces of vesicle membranes, nanotubes, and spherical micelles. The PAA block chains were partially ionized, leading to the negative zeta potential of AxS48O46S48Ax micelles in dilute aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) was conducted in a non‐polar medium (n‐dodecane) via reversible complexation‐mediated polymerization (RCMP). Stearyl methacrylate (SMA) was used to synthesize a macroinitiator, and subsequent block polymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) from the macroinitiator in n‐dodecane afforded a PSMA–PBzMA block copolymer, where PSMA is poly(stearyl methacrylate) and PBzMA is poly(benzyl methacrylate). Because PSMA is soluble but PBzMA is insoluble in n‐dodecane, the block copolymer formed a self‐assembly during the block polymerization (PISA). Spherical micelles, worms, and vesicles were obtained, depending on the degrees of polymerization of PSMA and PBzMA. "One‐pot" PISA was also attained; namely, BzMA was directly added to the reaction mixture of the macroinitiator synthesis, and PISA was conducted in the same pot without purification of the macroinitiator. The spherical micelle and vesicle structures were also fixed using a crosslinkable monomer during PISA. RCMP‐PISA is highly attractive as it is odourless and metal‐free. The "one‐pot" synthesis does not require the purification of the macroinitiator. RCMP‐PISA can provide a practical approach to synthesize self‐assemblies in non‐polar media. Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) was achieved by conducting an initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR ATRP) at low ppm of copper catalyst concentration. A poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate)(50) (POEOMA(50)) macroinitiator and stabilizer was synthesized by an aqueous ICAR ATRP using (CuCl2)-Cl-II/tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine (TPMA) complex. Subsequently, the dispersion polymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BnMA) in ethanol was realized with a (CuBr2)-Br-II/TPMA complex either at room temperature or at 65 degrees C using V-70 or AIBN as radical initiators, respectively. The effect of catalyst concentration, radical initiators, targeted degree of polymerization (DP) of PBnMA, solids content, and temperature on the molecular characteristics and self-assembly behavior of block copolymers POEOMA-PBnMA was evaluated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Block copolymers assembled into spheres, wormlike aggregates, and vesicles with diameters ranging from 100 to 600 nm, depending on the temperature, solids content, and the DP of PBnMA. The effect of the temperature on the polymerization behavior and morphological evolution was attributed to the temperature-dependent plasticization of the core-forming PBnMA block above and below its glass transition temperature (T-g = 54 degrees C).

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful technique to synthesize assemblies with various morphologies. However, PISA mediated by long, stabilizing chains usually produces kinetically trapped spheres; thus, the morphology evolution remains a challenge. Here, a convenient and general strategy for facilitating the morphological evolution by the copolymerization of solvophilic monomers is reported. With the incorporation of only 7% (molar ratio) solvophilic 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TESPMA) into poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PDMA-b-PBzMA) spheres, PDMA-b-P(BzMA-co-TESPMA) assemblies evolve from spheres to worms, octopi-like and jellyfish-like structures, vesicles, and large compound vesicles. This non-specific effect is further confirmed by the copolymerization of BzMA with other solvophilic monomers, including N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMA), N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEA), and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). This work provides a convenient approach to promote morphology evolution and develops the formulations design of PISA.
Versatile morphology transition of nano-assemblies via ultrasonics/microwave assisted aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly based on host-guest interaction

Abstract:Nano-assemblies have wide applications in biomedicine, functional coatings, Pickering emulsifiers, hydrogels, and so forth. The preparation of assemblies mainly utilizes the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) method, which can produce high-concentration nanoscale assemblies in one step. However, the initiation processes of most reported PISA are limited to thermal initiation. Here, we reported two green and efficient methods for synthesizing nano-assemblies with various morphologies using ultrasound (20 kHz)/ microwave (500 W) assisted aqueous-phase RAFT-PISA in 3 h and 1 h. Cyclodextrin (CD) and styrene (St) nucleating monomer were complexed in a 1:1 ratio. Then, using Poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether as the macromolecular reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent (PEG-CTA) to control the CD/St complexes, the conversion rate of St monomer was respectively 27 %-60 %, 20 %-30 % within 3 h and 1 h under ultrasonics/microwave assisted PISA. Results showed that the morphologies of the assemblies are not only related to the length of PS block, but also to the assistance types and the remaining monomer concentration. The results showed that only PEG45-b-PS90 and PEG45-b-PS241 assemblies prepared by ultrasonics assisted PISA form evolved lamellaes and vesicles (100 nm), which break through the limitation of kinetic freezing. But the ultrasonic reaction on morphology of assemblies is not all favourable. For one thing, it can promote the movement of particles; for another, it makes reverse morphology transformation and sphere is preferred morphology. Therefore, the main reason of morphology evolution is the remaining monomer concentration of PEG45-b-PS90 and PEG45-b-PS241 assemblies reaches to 55 %-65 %, which promoting the segment movement. The results showed that the morphology of the assemblies prepared by microwave assisted PISA changed from spherical micelles to short rods, and finally to vesicles (120-140 nm) as the length of hydrophobic PS block increases. The kinetic freezing problem was solved in microwave-assisted PISA due to the action of microwaves and more remaining monomer concentration. Both them can boost particles movement.

Abstract:A series of block copolymers poly ( N -2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl pyrrolidone)- b -poly (benzylmethacrylate) (PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n ) were developed. These amphiphilic copolymers formed diversified aggregates in water, depending on the degree of polymerization n of the PBzMA segment. There presented the n -induced morphological transition from spherical micelles to vesicles via wormlike micelles. Moreover, PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n aggregates were excellent dual function emulsifiers, showing similarity with both particles and surfactants simultaneously. The emulsification of PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n aggregates was affected significantly by the degree of polymerization n of the PBzMA segment and oil. However, the effect of oil was more remarkable in comparison with that of n , in which the compatibility between oil and the hydrophobic PBzMA segment was critical. In general, O/W and W/O emulsions were formed for oils with poor and good compatibility to the PBzMA segment such as nonpolar alkanes and toluene, respectively. In these cases, PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n aggregates were remained in water in the alkane/water systems, whereas they were transferred into the toluene phase according to the similarity-intermiscibility principle. For isopropyl myristate, a polar oil with the intermediate compatibility to the PBzMA segment, PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n in water were transferred into the oil phase partially. Accordingly, emulsifiers in water and oil benefit the formation of O/W and W/O emulsions, respectively, as observed in the alkane/water and toluene/water systems. As a result, O/W and W/O emulsions were generated by PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n with relatively small and large n , respectively. For PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n with the intermediate n , W/O/W multiple emulsions were formed attributing to the synergistic emulsification of PNMP 39 - b -PBzMA n in water and oil.

Abstract:The assembly morphologies of amphiphilic graft polyphosphazene containing oligopoly (N-isopropyl-acrylamide) and ethyl 4-aminobenzoate as co-side groups (PNIPAm/EAB-PPPs) with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, were illustrated. Multimorphological assemblies ranging from network structure and nanospheres to high-genus particles were observed for the copolymer containing a relatively high EAB content. It was observed that temperature induced morphological changes of aggregates, which was resulted from the thermosensitivity of PNIPAm segments in the copolymers, The results show that self-assembly morphologies of PNIPAm/EAB-PPPs are regulated along with the variation of copolymer composition.

Abstract:A series of linear thermosensitive amphiphilic pentablock terpolymers PNIPAM(x)-b-PtBA(90)-b-PPO36-b-PtBA(90)-b-PNIPAM(x) (N(x)T(90)o(36)T(90)N(x)) with various lengths x of PNIPAM block (x = 111, 107, 95, 58, 33, and 26) were synthesized via a two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using modified poly(propylene oxide) (PPO36) as the macroinitiator, tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) as the first monomer, and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the second monomer. The NxT90O36T90Nx pentablock terpolymers form micelles in dilute aqueous solution, whose structure and morphology are dependent on the length x of PNIPAM block and solution temperature. At 14 degrees C, below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM block, the morphology of NxT90O36T90Nx micelles changes from core corona spherical micelles with homogeneous hydrophobic core to rodlike micelles, core-shell-corona spherical micelles with clear boundaries, core shell corona spherical micelles with blurry boundaries, and finally large compound spherical micelles with embedded hydrophilic chains in the hydrophobic region when x decreases from 111 to 26. This morphology change might be attributed to the different stretching factors of hydrophobic PPO and PtBA blocks in the micelles, which varied differently with length x of PNIPAM block and hence resulted in the change of compatibility of the two hydrophobic blocks. A scaling relationship between the length L-0 of hydrophilic corona and the length x of PNIPAM block is found to be L-0 similar to x(0.77 +/- 0.08), which falls in the range 0.5-0.86 theoretically predicted for the micelles of diblock copolymers. The size of hydrophobic regions increases with decreasing x. At 60 degrees C above the LCST of PNIPAM block, all NxT90O36T90Nx pentablock terpolymers form spherical micelles with uniform structure and size distribution in aqueous solution regardless of the length x of PNIPAM block.

Abstract:A variety of molecular assemblies have been prepared from a new kind of amphiphilic diblock copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly [2-(beta-D-glucopoyranosyloxy)ethyl acrylate] (PSt-b-PGEA). The morph ologies include spheres, vesicles, tubules, porous spheres and large compound vesicles. These molecular assemblies are similar in morphology to the so-called "crew-cut" aggregates that have been systematically studied by Eisenberg's group and were prepared in the same manner. The preparation of such molecular assemblies was carried out by first dissolving the copolymer in a common solvent, followed by addition of water to freeze the polystyrene block. The solvents used in this report were N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxane and their mixtures. It has been observed that by changing the solvent, or the solvent mixture, different morphologies can be obtained from a single copolymer, and the transformation of these morphologies can be easily adjusted by changing the composition of the solvent mixture. One typical example is the morphological transitions between tubules and vesicles of PSt(77)-b-PGEA(6), which is initially dissolved in mixed THF-DMF solvent. These molecular assemblies contain a high density of glucose moieties on the surface, therefore, they may find applications as cellular-specific drug delivery systems or be used as building blocks for highly ordered supramolecular architectures.

When the obtained dispersions are sequentially cooled to room temperature, diluted into ethanol, and observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurement, the cases of [POEOMA24 ]0 /[POEOMA78 ]0 = 1/1 or 2/1 and target DPPB n MA = 100 or 200 lead to nanoparticles with irregular sizes, while the cases of [POEOMA24 ]0 /[POEOMA78 ]0 = 4/1 and target DPPB n MA = 300 give the regular ones. When the obtained dispersions at a high temperature (65 °C) are directly diluted into room temperature ethanol and observed by TEM, nanoparticles with light contrast but clear contour can be observed. The results show that the higher content of POEOMA78 tends to improve the solubility of diblock copolymer and thus leads to insufficient stabilization of the nanoparticles. The morphological difference from the room-temperature and 65 °C dispersions help elucidate the intrinsic character of the PISA system.
Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly Driven by the Synergistic Effects of Aromatic and Solvophobic Interactions

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been established as an efficient method to fabricate polymeric vesicles. In most PISA cases, the formation of vesicles is solely driven by the solvophobic interactions. Besides solvophobic effects, many other noncovalent interactions can also drive/influence self-assembly of block copolymers. In this work, PISA driven by the synergistic effects of solvophobic and aromatic interactions is investigated. 7-(2-Methacryloyloxyethoxy)-4-methylcoumarin (CMA) is selected as a model monomer for RAFT dispersion polymerization to fabricate vesicles with both solvophobic and aromatic interactions existing in the membrane-forming blocks. Controlling vesicular size in the range of sub-100 nm to micrometer in PISA is realized by copolymerization of CMA with three different comonomers (aromatic or not) in various proportions to adjust the intermolecular interactions. Abstract:Preparation of diblock copolymers, (,N-3)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) [(,N-3)-PNIPAM-b-PDMA] and (,N-3)-polystyrene-b-PNIPAM [(,N-3)-PS-b-PNIPAM], with reactive alkyne and azide at one end using a trifunctional agent enables us to study how their self-assembly in a selective solvent affects interchain coupling, i.e., the self-assembly assisted polypolymerization (SAAP). As expected, (,N-3)-PNIPAM-b-PDMA chains self. assemble into a micelle-like core-shell structure with a PNIPAM core in water at 50 degrees C. The coupling of as many as 17 PNIAPM ends together led to star-like chains, independent of the copolymer concentration, while the coupling efficiencies at lower temperatures (with no self-assembly) and in good solvents are much lower. These star-like chains remember their "birth" state in water and undergo the intrachain contraction to form single-chain micelles instead of large multichain aggregates. On the other hand, (,N-3)-PS-b-PNIPAM exists as individual chains in THF, a mixture of unimers and micelles in 2-propanol, the core-shell micelles in methanol, and irregular aggregates in water. Only in methanol, the coupling efficiency is notably improved. The addition of water into 2-propanol enhances the self-assembly and so does the interchain coupling. The current study shows that even the solvophobic interaction makes the insoluble blocks less mobile inside the core and decreases the collision probability of reactive chain ends, the self-assembly still concentrates the reactive ends together and assists the coupling if the selective solvent is properly chosen.

Abstract:Various poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-b-benzyl methacrylate) (PHEMA n –PBzMA m ) and poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate-b-benzyl methacrylate) (PHPMA n –PBzMA m ) nano-objects have been prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) alcoholic dispersion polymerization. Using either a PHPMA or PHEMA macro-CTA as a steric stabilizer, chain extension with BzMA was conducted in methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol. In each case, in situ self-assembly is driven by the growing PBzMA chains, which become insoluble in lower alcohols above a certain critical chain length. Empirically, PHPMA macro-CTA proved to be much more effective than PHEMA macro-CTA in such syntheses, since the former conferred higher colloidal stability in alcohol. By constructing two detailed phase diagrams, the final nanoparticle morphology is shown to be sensitive to the DP of the core-forming block (PBzMA), the total solids content, and also the mean DP of the stabilizer block (PHPMA). The latter effect is readily demonstrated for PHPMA macro-CTAs possessing mean DPs of 48 and 63. Using PHPMA48 as a steric stabilizer, a range of nano-objects (spheres, worms or vesicles) can be accessed simply by tuning the DP of the core-forming PBzMA block. In contrast, using the PHPMA63 stabilizer only produces spherical morphologies. Presumably this is because the latter confers more effective steric stabilization, which prevents the efficient fusion of spheres to form worms. Nevertheless the PHPMA63–PBzMA n formulation may still be useful, since it allows access to spherical nanoparticles with tunable mean diameters of 29–100 nm. Such phase diagrams are essential for the reproducible targeting of copolymer morphologies, since they enable mixed phase regions to be avoided and allow the predictable synthesis of pure spheres, worms, or vesicles at a given concentration. Finally, a block copolymer “jellyfish” was observed during these PISA syntheses, which suggests that such intermediates are most likely a generic feature of the in situ conversion of worms into vesicles.

Abstract:The morphology of polymeric nano-objects has an important influence on its properties, among which vesicles (especially multi-chambered vesicles) have attracted much attention due to their hollow structures. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is an efficient method for preparing polymeric nano-objects. However, there are relatively few reports on the efficient preparation of multi-chambered vesicles by PISA. In this paper, multi-chambered vesicles were successfully prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization-induced self-assembly using styrene (St) as monomer, ethanol/water (7/3, mass ratio) as the solvent and polyethylene glycol (PEG45-PETTC) as macro RAFT reagent. At the same time, RAFT copolymerization-induced self-assembly of St and oligoethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate monomers (OEGMA) were carried out to explore the effect of introducing solvophilic moiety OEGMA into the core-forming blocks on the morphology of the resulting nano-objects. Due to the strong chain rigidity of polystyrene, the introduction of a solvophilic segment into the polystyrene segment to increase the flexibility of the core-forming blocks is a reported method to promote morphology evolution. However, in the polymerization-induced self-assembly system of St and OEGMA in ethanol/water (7/3, mass ratio), the introduction of solvophilic moieties (OEGMA) resulted in the morphology degradation of the resulting nano-objects. With the increase of solvophilic moieties in the core-forming blocks, the resulting nano-objects gradually transformed from multi-chambered vesicles to unicellular vesicles and spherical micelles. Random copolymer P(St-co-OEGMA) of the core-forming blocks in the corresponding nano-objects were formed by RAFT copolymerization of St and OEGMA. The solvated degree of the core-forming blocks increased due to the introduction of solvophilic OEGMA moieties. Moreover, the large side groups may also increase the free volume of core-forming blocks. The increasing of the free volume and solvated degree of the core-forming blocks synergistically weakened the packing strength of the core-forming blocks, leading to adversely effects on morphology transition of the nano-objects. We believe that the results of this study is a good complement to the current polymerization-induced self-assembly system.

Abstract:A series of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) formulations are developed based on reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of semi-fluorinated methacrylates. Alcoholic RAFT dispersion polymerization of 2-(perfluorobutyl)ethyl methacrylate (FHEMA), 2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl methacrylate (FHEMA), and 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate (FOEMA) is systematically evaluated to extend the general usability of semi-fluorinated methacrylates to PISA. The nanostructure of the assemblies is correlated to the side-chain length of the monomer: RAFT dispersion polymerization of FHEMA produces spherical micelles, wormlike micelles, and vesicles depending on its degree of polymerization (DP), while only spheres are generated for the PISA of FHEMA. PISA of FOEMA generates liquid crystalline cylindrical micelles, whose diameter increases with the DP of FOEMA. These results demonstrate the general feasibility of semi-fluorinated methacrylates to PISA. Besides, PISA of FHEMA is also realized in a variety of solvents, including iso-propanol, toluene, dioxane, and dimethyl formamide, exhibiting the superior solvent serviceability of the PISA formulations based on semi-fluorinated methacrylates.

Abstract:Abstract Polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) has a high solid content, simple operating steps, and can generally achieve high conversion to monomers in a short time, which has been widely used in the preparation and adjusting to morphologies of polymer micelles self-assembly. In this article, the preparation and applications of the polymeric micelle synthesized by PISA were reviewed. The particle morphology can be adjusted by a variety of active polymerizations with different initiation mechanisms in the preparation of polymer micelles. Among them, free radical active polymerization is more practical. The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were highlighted. Additionally, different shapes such as spheres, worms, and vesicles can be obtained by RAFT in the preparation of nano-objects fields. Researchers construct the phase diagram to get the pure phase for applications. As one form produced by PISA, polymeric micelles are usually artificial nanoreactors for a series of organic and inorganic catalysis and can be used as drug delivery and target agents. Due to the increase in the ultimate tensile strength, RAFT is an optimal technique to produce thermoplastic elastomers.
