Abstract:Children begin to show preferences for specific playmates as early as the first 2 years of life. Children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty making friends, even in elementary and middle school. However, very little is known about earlier friendships in children with autism such as preschool friendships. This study examined friendships in preschool children with autism and explored how joint attention contributes to these friendships in mainstream settings. A secondary aim was to determine the extent to which teachers used strategies to facilitate friendship development. The participants were 31 mainstreamed preschool children (ages 2–5 years) with autism spectrum disorder. School observations were conducted individually to capture participants’ interactions with peers and adults during free play. The results indicated that 20% of the participants had friendships at school. Children with friends were more likely than children without friends to be jointly engaged with their peers during free play, and they used higher joint attention skills. Teachers used few friendship facilitating strategies, and more often used behavioral management strategies within the classrooms. Future studies may want to examine the effects of early interventions and/or teacher training on the development of friendships in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder within the school setting.

Abstract:Background Peer relationships can be especially difficult for autistic adolescents, given their marked social communication difficulties. The purpose of this systematic review is to synthesise reported qualitative findings on how autistic adolescents experience peer relationships, including the rewards and challenges, from their perspective. The review includes the perspectives of others (e.g. parents, support workers), from included papers where these were reported in addition to the adolescent viewpoint. Method PRISMA guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute meta-aggregative approach to qualitative synthesis informed this review process. Articles included were published in the last ten years, specific to autistic adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19. Of the 75 articles meeting eligibility for full-text review, ten matched the final inclusion criteria. Results Findings relating to four main themes emerged from the qualitative synthesis: understanding friendship, having and wanting friends, challenges of peer relationships and overcoming challenges. Fourteen sub-topics are described in detail, for example, that autistic adolescents do have and want friends, though this is often not easily achieved, leading to feelings of loneliness. Findings also revealed experiences of peer rejection and victimisation, and specific factors that might make building positive peer relationships difficult, such as group settings. Conclusions Autistic adolescents face a number of difficulties with understanding social rules and conventions, which seem to make peer relationships difficult. However, due to many autistic adolescents having a desire for friendship, some have developed ways of overcoming these challenges. This review highlights that additional support is needed to support the development of autistic adolescents’ social skills and awareness; further research is needed to establish how this could be done most effectively.

Abstract:This mixed-methods study examined gender differences in the social motivation and friendship experiences of adolescent boys and girls with autism relative to those without autism, all educated within special education settings. Autistic girls showed similar social motivation and friendship quality to non-autistic girls, while autistic boys reported having both qualitatively different friendships and less motivation for social contact relative to boys without autism and to girls with and without autism. Semi-structured interviews with the adolescents corroborated these findings, with one exception: autistic girls reported high levels of relational aggression within their friendships, suggesting that girls on the autism spectrum in particular may struggle with identifying and dealing with conflict in their social lives.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Autistic children are often reported less socially connected, while recent studies show autistic children experiencing more loneliness in school than allistic (i.e. non-autistic) children, contradicting the traditional view that autistic children lack social motivation. This study aimed to understand individual differences in how social connectedness is construed, between and within groups of autistic and allistic pupils, using a multimethod approach. Forty-seven autistic and 52 neurodiverse-allistic classmates from two special primary schools participated (8–13 years). Proximity sensors worn by pupils on playgrounds during recess measured (1) total time in face-to-face contacts, (2) number of contact partners, and (3) centrality in playground networks. Peer reports measured (4) reciprocal friendships and (5) centrality in classmate networks. To evaluate their feelings of connectedness, pupils rated the level of loneliness in school. Compared with allistic pupils, autistic pupils had fewer reciprocal friendships, but similar total time in social contacts, number of partners, classmate/playground centrality, and levels of loneliness. Lower levels of loneliness related to higher classmate centrality in autistic children, but longer time in social contacts in allistic children. For these autistic children, being liked as part of a peer group seems essential. Understanding relevant differences in children's needs could lead to a more welcoming school climate.Lay abstractMany previous studies reported that autistic children have fewer social connections. Yet, recent studies also show that autistic children more often feel lonely in school than allistic (i.e. non-autistic) children. This outcome seems to go against the traditional view that autistic children do not desire to have social connections. Therefore, this study aimed to find out how autistic and allistic children feel about their social connections. We included 47 autistic and 52 neurodiverse-allistic children from two special education primary schools (aged 8–13 years). We tested their social connections and loneliness in school, through a new approach. This new approach includes questionnaires, and sensors for tracking social contacts on playgrounds during school breaks. We found that allistic children felt more loneliness when they spent little time in social contacts during school breaks. Yet, autistic children felt more loneliness when their peers did not like to play with them. For these autistic children, feelings of loneliness may go beyond face-to-face contacts. Being liked as part of a peer group was key. Understanding differences in children's needs can lead to a more effective design for a welcoming school climate.

Abstract:Autism research rarely amplifies the voices of autistic children. Here, we aim to counter this by collating and sharing the first-hand experiences and insights of autistic children. A total of 136 children (8-14 years of age) self-reported their experiences of being autistic via a semi-structured online questionnaire/video call. Both qualitative and quantitative data was gathered, and inductive thematic analysis used to analyse qualitative responses. Four core themes were identified: ‘Safety and Security’, ‘Conformity, Fitting in and Masking’, ‘Identity’, and ‘Sensory Sensitivity. The initial theme of safety and security permeated the children’s narratives and overwhelmingly, the children spoke of the need for them to be alert to who in their lives is a safe person and who is not. They were also highly attuned to whether specific places are safe for them, as past experiences appear to have taught them that their safety in everyday places cannot be assumed. Teachers, health and social care professionals, and neurotypical peers were frequently singled out as unsafe people and school as an unsafe place, whilst parents, home, and autistic peers were often referred to as safe. This distinction was also evident in the statistical analysis of the quantitative data, whereby autistic children were significantly more likely to report that it is okay for them to be autistic at home, relative to when they are at school or with their friends/peers. Judging a person as safe was closely linked to that persons’ understanding of the child and of their autistic experiences, and understanding was important in establishing trust. When trust was established, it appeared possible for trusted people to facilitate a sense of safety for the children even within otherwise unsafe places. A sense of belonging within autistic/neurodivergent communities was positively linked to the core theme of safety and security and to having a positive autistic identity, whilst masking and sensory distress were linked to feeling unsafe and insecure. These first-hand accounts provide valuable insights into autistic children’s lives and demand that we urgently explore how places outside of the family home (including places of education) can be transformed into safe spaces for autistic children.

‘It’s different for girls’: Gender differences in the friendships and conflict of autistic and neurotypical adolescents

Abstract:This mixed-methods study examined gender differences in the friendships and conflict experiences of autistic girls and boys relative to their neurotypical peers. In total, 102 adolescents (27 autistic girls, 26 autistic boys, 26 neurotypical girls, and 23 neurotypical boys), aged between 11 and 18 years completed the Friendship Qualities Scale, the Revised Peer Experiences Questionnaire and were interviewed about their friendships. Results demonstrated that in many ways, the friendships and social experiences of autistic girls are similar to those of neurotypical girls. Autistic girls, however, have significantly more social challenges than their neurotypical peers, experiencing more conflict and finding that conflict harder to manage successfully. Autistic boys showed quantitatively different friendship patterns to all other groups. There were consistent gender differences in the type of conflict which boys and girls experienced, regardless of diagnostic status. These findings suggest that gender, rather than diagnosis per se, plays a critical role in the way that autistic adolescents perceive and experience their social relationships.

Abstract:Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Ahead of Print. This case study of an inclusive classroom examined neurotypical (NT) children's perspectives on their relationships with their classmates with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Data were collected through observations and interviews. Findings showed that social relationships between NT children and their classmates with ASD in integrated classrooms presented in two distinct forms, either as friendships or as instrumental partnerships. We also examined four naturally occurring mixed friendships between young children with and without disabilities. In these mixed dyads, several factors influenced the quality of the friendships, including the opportunity to engage in similar activities, the social status of the NT child, and the social skills of both children. Educational implications and suggestions for further research are included.

Abstract:This study compared perceptions of adolescents’ friendships between adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their parents, examined factors associated with friendship qualities, and investigated the adolescents’ reports on the activities they did with friends and how activity patterns differed by gender. Ninety-one adolescents with an ASD and their parents completed mail-based surveys during the summer months. Adolescents with an ASD identified more friends than did their parents, but they agreed on the friends’ characteristics. About half of the adolescents spent an average of 4 hours per day with friends during the summer months. Male adolescents with an ASD most frequently played video games with friends, whereas females most frequently had conversations with friends. The findings suggest that adolescents with an ASD and their parents identify different peers as the adolescent’s friends. The findings also reveal similarities and differences in friendships between adolescents with an ASD and typically developing adolescents.

Abstract:The peer interactions of children with autism have received attention, but few studies have focused on the behavior of preschool children with autism to independently manage friendship relations, and the internal and external reasons that determine these behaviors. Qualitative data on the autonomy in managing friendship practices of 12 young children with autism enrolled in public kindergartens in China were analyzed. The results suggested that young children with autism showed different attitudes and ways of friendship management in different situations, and four factors might play important roles in their friendship management: (a) children’s personality and temperament types, (b) children’s motivation and goals, (c) children’s ability status, and (d) school rhythm arrangement and role guidance. The core of the four factors is children’s motivation and goals, that is, children with autism tend to choose peers they think are appropriate for interaction and active management. Therefore, teachers should configure environmental support in a way more suitable for children’s learning rhythm, and respect their independent thinking and choices in a way consistent with their social ecology. The study enriches environmental support strategies to promote peer relationships in inclusive settings with a focus on supporting autonomy for children with autism. These findings could guide the development of autonomous interventions for children with autism to better meet their needs and have enlightening significance for caregivers, practitioners and researchers seeking to support the friendship experience of children with autism.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Successful partnerships between families and schools can substantially improve children's success in and out of school. Yet parents of autistic children often report considerable challenges with their children's education. Almost no research, however, has examined autistic parents' own experiences. We, therefore, sought the views and experiences of autistic parents' interactions with schools for their autistic children. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 31 autistic mothers of autistic children engaged in education in Australia. We analysed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. Autistic mothers repeatedly expressed feeling like they were in a 'war zone', fighting ongoing battles to gain the necessary support for their autistic child and were 'sick of being [viewed as] the problem'. They also felt that their expertise as parents – and experiential expertise as autistic parents – was often overlooked or ignored. All of this had negative effects on their and their children's mental health. Despite these negative experiences, autistic mothers who had experienced positive interactions with schools highlighted the importance of mutual respect in establishing and maintaining successful school partnerships and how their own determination and self-advocacy helped to foster these relationships. This research sheds light on the critical ingredients of effective home–school partnerships for autistic families.Lay abstractGood relationships between families and schools make a difference to children's learning – and the same goes for autistic children. But parents of autistic children often find it very stressful interacting with teachers and school staff. In this study, we focused on autistic parents of autistic children. We wanted to know about their experiences of interacting with schools and the impact these had on them and their children. We spoke to 31 autistic mothers of autistic children about their experiences. They told us that they felt they were constantly fighting with schools to get the support needed for their autistic children and compared it to like being in a 'war zone'. They were 'sick of being [viewed as] the problem' and felt that their views and autistic expertise were not taken seriously by teachers and schools. This was damaging to their autistic children's mental health as well as their own. Autistic mothers did share some positive experiences too. They spoke about the value of mutual respect and its impact on successful school partnerships. Autistic mothers also spoke about standing up for themselves and their children and how this advocacy and self-advocacy helped them to build better relationships with schools. This research showed how difficult it can be for autistic families to interact with teachers and schools and the impact this can have on the whole family. It also showed us that strong, trusting relationships between school and families are possible – when autistic parents feel safe, and when their knowledge and lived experience are taken seriously by educators.

"It just depends": Parent, teacher, and expert conceptualization of social communication in young autistic children

Abstract:Improving social communication is often one goal during early autism services. However, researchers do not yet know whether their ideas about which social communication skills should be targeted during services for young autistic children are the same as the goals of autism community members, such as parents, teachers, and expert clinicians. This study used focus groups (meetings of small groups of community members) to ask people from these groups about what aspects of social communication are most important to support in young autistic children. A total of 43 people participated in these focus groups. These groups included parents (three groups; 21 people), teachers (two groups; 8 people), and experts in early social communication and autism (two groups; 14 people). Focus group participants talked about several aspects of social communication that were already familiar to the research team, such as problems with expressive communication, language understanding, and social interaction. However, participants also talked about several parts of social communication that were less familiar to the research team and had usually not been mentioned in previous research. These included (1) considering the value of unusual forms of communication, (2) taking context and setting into account when considering social communication, and (3) how communication and emotion regulation impact one another. The information from these focus groups will be helpful to making sure that researchers and clinicians focus their social communication supports on areas that are most important to parents and teachers.

Abstract:Background: Late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD) is associated with changes in certain proteins, such as ApoE and Cyp46A1, of the elimination route for cerebral cholesterol. The main lipoprotein involved in its transport is ApoE whose 4 allele is the least effi cient. However, the presence or absence of this allele does not determine the development of LOAD, which implies the existence of other susceptibility factors associated with the disease, such as the CYP46A1 gene that encodes the enzyme cholesterol 24S-hydroxylase. In their own words: The impact of subtle language and communication difficulties as described by autistic girls and boys without intellectual disability

Abstract:Subtle language and communication difficulties are persistent and pervasive for autistic individuals without intellectual disability. They are thought to impact negatively on functionality, social interrelations and emotional well-being, although this relationship is under-explored in the literature. The personal accounts of autistic children could add valuable insight into how they experience subtle language and communication difficulties and what impact this has on their daily lives. In this study, 12 autistic children (9–14 years), without intellectual disability, were interviewed on this topic, using specially developed methods/materials to facilitate rich self-reporting. Results showed the children could provide detailed insight into their difficulties and the impact of these on key aspects of functionality (education and daily living) and social interrelations (including friendship building). They also demonstrated a potentially bi-directional relationship between subtle language and communication difficulties and negative emotions; with negative emotions limiting communicative competence and subtle linguistic difficulties leading to negative emotional responses. This study indicates the need for further investigation into the subtle difficulties experienced by autistic children without intellectual disability and its likely impact. Implications for clinical practice include the need for better identification of subtle language and communication difficulties and provision of appropriate therapeutic services which may help to ameliorate negative functional, social and emotional sequelae. Lay abstract Subtle language and communication difficulties are experienced by many autistic individuals even when they do not have additional learning disabilities. These difficulties may affect a person’s day-to-day living, social relationships and emotional well-being. However, currently, there is not much research into this topic. To date, no one has asked autistic children about their own language and communication difficulties or how they feel it affects them. Asking the children could provide valuable new insights. In this study, 12 autistic children (9–14 years), without learning disability, were interviewed on this topic. We developed interview questions, resources and interview procedures with the support of the autistic community. We also worked with an autistic researcher to analyse our results. We aimed to get the most genuine report of the autistic child’s experiences. Our results showed that the children could give detailed insight into their language and communication difficulties if they were given the right support. They told us about how subtle language and communication difficulties affected their ability to learn, take part in certain activities and seek help. They talked about how subtle difficulties affect their ability to talk to new people, talk in groups and ultimately make friends. They also told us about the emotional upset that these subtle difficulties could have. They suggest that communication breakdown leads to negative feelings, but also that negative feelings can lead to more difficulties explaining themselves. The results of this study suggest that we should do more research on the effects of subtle language and communication difficulties. There are also implications for clinical practice. We should identify subtle language and communication difficulties through thorough assessment because these are often missed. We should also develop therapy and strategies that are aimed at individuals with subtle language and communication difficulties because this could help prevent additional difficulties with learning, help-seeking, friendship-making and emotional well-being.

Microbial B Cell Toxin Proliferation and Deletion-Induced by a between In Vivo B Cell Receptor-Targeted Temporal and Dose-Dependent Relationships

Abstract:2 The effective functioning of the adaptive immune system requires careful clonal regulation within the B cell compartment. Some microbial pathogens produce virulence factors, like staphylococcal protein A, which interact at high frequencies with B lymphocyte through unconventional binding sites in BCR variable region frameworks conserved during evolution. We have characterized the in vivo effect of staphylococcal protein A treatment on peripheral B cells bearing susceptible BCR, and found a dose-dependent direct relationship over the range of 2 mg to < 0.2 (cid:1) g in the magnitude of induced BCR-targeted supraclonal cell death. Signif-icantly, some level of targeted B cell proliferation was always detectable, with greatest interim supraclonal expansion demonstrated at 2 days after 20- (cid:1) g treatment. Subsequently, this transient expansion always collapsed. In direct comparisons, i.p. treatment was more efﬁcacious than i.v. treatment, although at higher doses this ﬁnding was less marked. These studies elucidate a general paradigm in which in vivo encounters with a B cell superantigen are uniformly associated with proliferative expansion followed by deletion that is more rapid and complete with higher doses, whereas lower doses lead to greater transient in vivo expansion with delayed deletion to levels at later times that are still quantitatively proportional to the dose. Our results document the potent in vivo B cell-targeted properties of a microbial B cell superantigen, even at submicrogram doses associated with great molar excess of circulating Ig, and clearly illustrate the intertwined relationships between targeted proliferative cycling and apoptotic death that is induced by a microbial B cell superantigen. Autistic children who create imaginary companions: Evidence of social benefits

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Past research shows that autistic children can and do create imaginary companions (ICs), and that these ICs resemble those that neurotypical children create. Neurotypical children creating ICs have been found to have significantly more developed theory of mind (ToM) and social understanding among other enhanced social cognitive skills. The study set out to determine if this finding applies to autistic children. Parents of 124 (38 female) autistic children, ages from 5 to –12 years old, completed questionnaires evaluating communication, social understanding, and social skills. Children with ICs had significantly higher ToM and social skills scores regardless of their communication abilities. Findings suggest that there is a variability in ToM and social skills in autistic children in reference to an IC play profile. Results are discussed in terms of direction of causality and lab-based investigations.Lay abstractResearch on neurotypical children with imaginary friends has found that those with imaginary friends have better social skills and are more able to think about how other people's minds work compared to children without imaginary friends. Research shows that some autistic children also create imaginary friends. This article is the first to look at whether or not autistic children with imaginary friends have stronger social skills and an improved ability to think about others' minds than those without imaginary friends. We asked parents to report about their children aged 5 to 12. Finding almost half reported their child had an imaginary friend, a much larger number than previous research with younger children. Our findings also suggested that autistic children with imaginary friends were better able to understand others' minds and had stronger social skills than their peers without imaginary friends. The children's language ability did not influence this. The findings of this study add to the evidence that with respect to the creation imaginary friends and their potential benefits, the play profiles of autistic children are similar to the general population. It also provides more evidence that the understanding of others' minds is not all or nothing in autism and gives reason for researchers to investigate whether the causes of these differences are the same or different for autistic children.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Mainstream secondary school can be a challenging environment for autistic students, in part due to social and sensory factors. Research to date has focussed on identifying the negative aspects of school experience; however, few studies have identified factors that promote positive experiences. We take a neuro-affirmative approach when exploring how schools can support autistic students, informed by both the social and the human rights models of disability. We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies in which autistic adolescents and adults identified factors that related to positive experiences in mainstream secondary school. We identified 117 relevant studies and 36 met inclusion criteria. Through thematic synthesis, we developed overarching themes: 'Understanding and Acceptance', 'Environments that suit me' and 'Agency to meet my needs', with additional subthemes. This study identified that agency, understanding and acceptance by both staff and peers, as well as access to engaging activities, were key factors in creating a positive and supportive environment for autistic students. Adaptation to both the social and sensory contexts were important to meet the needs of autistic students. The findings suggest that policy and practice should focus on creating a positive environment in schools for autistic students, in addition to addressing current challenges.Lay abstractResearch has shown that many autistic students do not thrive in mainstream secondary schools. Often studies focus on the challenges autistic people face rather than what supports thriving. We reviewed published articles, exploring what factors helped autistic people create a positive experience in school from their own perspective. We identified 36 studies and analysed the direct quotes made by autistic adolescents and adults in these studies. Factors important for positive experience included the autistic student feeling understood and accepted by adults and peers in school, being able to shape sensory and social environments in ways that suited them and accessing engaging activities. This review highlighted ways in which schools can become more inclusive and positive environments for autistic students.

The Influence of Peer Relationships on the Social Development of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:Purpose: Peer relationships significantly impact the social development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), influencing their emotional well-being, academic performance, and overall quality of life. This study aims to explore the influence of peer relationships on the social development of children with ASD, identifying the challenges they face and the support systems that facilitate positive social outcomes. Methodology: This qualitative study involved 23 participants, including ten children with ASD, ten parents, and three teachers and support staff. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using NVivo software. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring themes, and theoretical saturation was achieved to ensure comprehensive data coverage. Findings: The analysis revealed four main themes: Social Interaction Challenges, Peer Relationship Dynamics, Parental and Teacher Support, and Positive Outcomes. Social Interaction Challenges included difficulties in communication, sensory overload, social anxiety, and misinterpretation of social cues. Peer Relationship Dynamics covered forming and sustaining friendships, inclusion and exclusion, and the influence of peers. Parental and Teacher Support highlighted strategies for social development, the role of teachers, parental involvement, and community resources. Positive Outcomes encompassed improvement in social skills, building self-esteem, increased independence, and enhanced academic performance. Conclusion: Peer relationships play a crucial role in the social development of children with ASD. Despite significant challenges, targeted interventions and supportive environments can lead to substantial improvements in social competencies. The findings underscore the importance of inclusive settings, peer-mediated interventions, and active involvement of parents and teachers in fostering positive social interactions for children with ASD.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. On average, groups of autistic individuals are more likely than groups of non-autistic individuals to exhibit unconventional conversational behaviours. We examined autistic and non-autistic children's social impressions of unconventional responding, as well as actual conversational behaviours in the same participants. Across two studies, 36 autistic and 36 non-autistic matched 9–13-year-olds listened to conversational vignettes which manipulated the relevance and timing of responses produced by the speaker. They then rated the speaker's social desirability. We also measured the content and latency of the same children's conversational responses. Autistic children aligned with their non-autistic peers in indicating that they were less likely to befriend, or enjoy interacting with, a speaker who provided off-topic or delayed responses. However, the same autistic children provided more off-topic, and fewer topic-continuing, conversational responses than their non-autistic counterparts. These findings suggest that displaying unconventional conversational behaviours may act as a barrier to friendship or inclusion for autistic children, even when socialising with other autistic peers.Lay abstractDuring a conversation, on average, autistic individuals are often more likely than non-autistic people to provide an off-topic comment and/or to pause for longer before providing a response. One possible explanation for this is that autistic individuals prefer, or are more tolerant of, unconventional communication styles. To explore this possibility, we investigated whether autistic and non-autistic 9–13-year-olds find off-topic or delayed responding a deterrent to friendship or interaction. Participants listened to scripted conversations and then rated social desirability statements, such as 'I would enjoy chatting to the [target speaker]'. We also examined the prevalence of these behaviours in children's own conversational responses. We found that autistic children were just as likely as non-autistic children to dis-prefer unconventional conversational responding. Both groups indicated that they were less likely to want to be friends with the speaker, or to chat with them, when they provided off-topic or delayed responses. However, despite their judgements of others, the same autistic children were more likely to provide off-topic responses themselves than their non-autistic peers, as well as giving fewer on-topic responses which facilitate back-and-forth conversation. Overall, this is problematic for autistic children, as our findings suggest that the tendency to exhibit unconventional conversational behaviours will have negative social consequences, even when interacting with other autistic peers.

Abstract:Background: Autistic children without intellectual disability will likely experience higher level language and communication difficulties. These may appear subtle, in that they are not immediately evident to those who do not know the child well and may not manifest in all environments. Because of this, the impact of such difficulties may be underestimated. This phenomenon has similarly attracted little research attention, meaning the extent to which subtle language and communication difficulties contribute to the needs of autistic individuals without intellectual disability may be underspecified in clinical services. Aims: To offer a detailed exploration of how relatively subtle language and communication difficulties impact on autistic children without intellectual disability and what strategies parents recognize can mediate those negative effects. Methods & procedures: Twelve parents of autistic children from the target group (aged 8-14 years, attending mainstream school) were interviewed about how subtle language and communication difficulties impact their autistic child. Rich accounts were derived then analysed using thematic analysis. Eight of the children discussed had previously been interviewed independently in a parallel study. Comparisons are discussed in this paper. Outcomes & results: Parents reported heterogeneous but pervasive higher level language and communication difficulties which universally impacted key areas of the children's function: peer relationships, developing independence and performance in education. Communication difficulties were also universally associated with negative emotional responses, social withdrawal and/or negative self-perceptions. While parents identified a range of ad hoc strategies and naturally occurring opportunities that improved outcomes, there was little mention of the means to address primary language and communication difficulties. The current study showed a number of parallels with child accounts, demonstrating the benefits of collecting data from both sources in clinical and research investigations. However, parents were more concerned about longer term implications of language and communication difficulties and highlighted their impact on the child developing functional independence. Conclusions & implications: Subtle language and communication difficulties, typically identified in this higher ability autistic group, can impact significantly on key areas of childhood function. Support strategies seem to be parent generated and inconsistently applied across individuals, without the benefit of coherent specialist services. Dedicated provision and resources targeting areas of functional need may be beneficial to the group. In addition, the commonly reported association between subtle language and communication difficulties and emotional well-being indicates the need for greater exploration using empirical methods, and joined-up clinical working between speech and language therapy and mental health services. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject There is now a wide understanding of how language and communication difficulties can impact the individual. However, where those difficulties are relatively subtle, for example, in children without intellectual disability and where difficulties are not immediately evident, less is known. Research has often speculated on how identified differences in higher level structural language and pragmatic difficulties might impact on the function of autistic children. However, to date dedicated exploration of this phenomenon is limited. The current author group explored first-hand accounts of children. Corroborative evidence from parents of the same children would add further weight to understanding this phenomenon. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge This study provides a detailed exploration of parents' perspective relating to the impact of language and communication difficulties on autistic children without intellectual disability. It provides corroborative detail that support child accounts of the same phenomenon, indicating the impact on peer relationships, school outcomes and emotional well-being. Parents also report functional concerns around the child's ability to develop independence and this paper demonstrates how parents and children might deviate in their accounts, with parents reporting increased concerns around the longer term implications of early language and communication difficulties. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? Relatively subtle language and communication difficulties can have a significant impact on the lives of autistic children without intellectual disability. Greater service provision for this group is therefore indicated. Interventions could focus on areas of functional concern where language is implicated, for example, peer relationships, developing independence and school success. Additionally, the relationship between language and emotional well-being points to further integration between speech and language therapy and mental health services. Differences found between parental and child reports highlight the need to collect data from both parties during clinical investigations. Parental strategies may offer benefits for the wider population.
