Abstract:Purpose: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women worldwide. This study was conducted to determine the quality of life (QOL) outcomes among breast cancer patients in the sub-Himalayan region and, secondly, to identify factors affecting them. Method: The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and BR-45 questionnaires in English and Hindi translations were used. The BR-45 Hindi translation was obtained using the forward-backward translation method. To check internal consistency and validity, Cronbach's alpha was employed. EORTC scoring manuals were used to score the questionnaires. The analysis of variance test was used to determine the impact of different treatment and sociodemographic factors on QOL domains. Results: The English and Hindi translations had Cronbach's alpha values of 0.949 and 0.950, respectively, suggesting that the data gathered were reliable. The mean score for global health status was 64.4 ± 29.7, the functional scale (FS) of QLQ_C30 was 76.9 ± 21.5, the FS of BR45 was 64.6 ± 24.1, the symptom scale (SS) of QLQ_C30 was 20.3 ± 19.2, and the SS of BR45 was 22.5 ± 19.1. Factors adversely affecting global health status included younger age, pre/perimenopausal status, and ongoing chemotherapy. Functional scales were significantly affected by marital status and earlier stages of the disease. Symptom scales were adversely affected by ongoing chemotherapy, an earlier stage of the disease, and a duration of treatment of less than six months. Conclusion: Tailoring treatment to reduce radiotherapy, surgery, and systemic therapy-related side effects may improve QOL. Counselling and social support groups may help patients cope with the burden of family and societal roles.
The mediating role of appraisal on health-related quality of life in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors

Abstract:Background Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors (first diagnosed with cancer at age 15–39) are distinct within the cancer community due to their unique challenges and diverse psycho-behavioral characteristics. This study aimed to analyze psycho-behavioral pathways and further explore the mediating role of cognitive appraisals on AYA cancer survivors’ quality of life (QoL). Methods Three hundred and eighty-nine AYA cancer survivors were eligible for analyses and recruited to self-administer questionnaires on QoL (the Chinese version of EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 v3.0), resilience, coping, and appraisal on site. This study performed structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine pathways on QoL based on the Rapkin & Schwartz QoL Appraisal Model. Results The average age of participants (47.6% female) was 32.7 ± 4.1 years. The SEM results closely fit the measured data ( RMSEA = 0.053, GFI = 0.955, CFI = 0.964, SRMR = 0.052). The final model showed direct negative effects of later clinical-stage, more comorbidities, and more Acceptance-Resignation coping on QoL; indirect positive effects of better resilience on QoL through less Acceptance-Resignation coping ( β = 0.286, P = 0.002). Appraisal mediated the effects of treatment and resilience on QoL ( β = -0.024, P = 0.038). Further, Calm, Peaceful, and Active appraisal patterns were associated with improved Cognitive Functioning ( β = 0.119, P = 0.009). Conclusion Appraisal, coping, and resilience could significantly mediate the effects of cancer and its treatment on the QoL of AYA cancer survivors. Future interventions targeting cognitive appraisals and psycho-behaviors will be helpful. Figuring out what matters to such a unique population and how they appraise a cancer diagnosis through treatment trajectories could help nurses adjust support.

Abstract:Objectives: Cancer treatment related fatigue is a common and distressing symptom among breast cancer patients. With a greater longevity promote by advances in therapeutics & early diagnosis, interest has shifted to the assessment of quality of life (QOL). The concept of functional capacity has been used extensively in disability and rehabilitation research as an indicator of an individual’s ability to engage in physical activity. The aim of this study was to find the association of fatigue, QOL and functional capacity in post-operative breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant therapy.Materials and Methods: A total 30 participants who were receiving third cycle of chemotherapy were recruited from the Cancer Hospital. Facet fatigue questionnaire, FACT B questionnaire and 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were used for the assessment purpose of fatigue, QOL and functional capacity, respectively. Results: The Spearman’s correlation confirmed that the fatigue is strongly associated with subscale score of Fact B and very strongly associated with total score of fact B, Fact G and TOI. There was moderate association between the fatigue and functional capacity. There were above average values in total and subscale scores of QOL but among all the subscale scores of QOL, breast cancer subscale score was having lower value compared to others and social well being score was higher. Conclusion: Fatigue is having strong association with quality of life and moderate effect with functional capacity in these patients. Specific breast cancer related health is having more association among other quality of life aspects and social well being is least affected.

Abstract:PurposeCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common and distressing symptom of cancer that may persist for years following treatment completion. However, little is known about the pathophysiology of CRF. Using a comprehensive group of gold-standard physiological and psychosocial assessments, this study aimed to identify correlates of CRF in a heterogenous group of cancer survivors.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design to determine the physiological and psychosocial correlates of CRF, ninety-three cancer survivors (51 fatigued, 42 non-fatigued) completed assessments of performance fatigability (i.e. the decline in muscle strength during cycling), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, venous blood samples for whole blood cell count and inflammatory markers and body composition. Participants also completed questionnaires measuring demographic, treatment-related, and psychosocial variables.ResultsPerformance fatigability, time-to-task-failure, peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), body fat percentage, and lean mass index were associated with CRF severity. Performance fatigability, V̇O2peak, TNF-α, and age explained 35% of the variance in CRF severity. Those with clinically-relevant CRF reported more pain, more depressive symptoms, less perceived social support, and were less physically active than non-fatigued cancer survivors.ConclusionsThe present study utilised a comprehensive group of gold-standard physiological and psychosocial assessments and the results give potential insight into the mechanisms underpinning the association between physical inactivity, physical deconditioning and CRF.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsGiven the associations between CRF and both physiological and psychosocial measures, this study identifies targets that can be measured by rehabilitation professionals and used to guide tailored interventions to reduce fatigue.

Abstract:Purpose: We aimed to explore the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), psychological issues and concerns among sarcoma survivors in India and assess their satisfaction with nursing care. Methods: This study employed a sequential mixed-methods design, enrolling 100 sarcoma survivors from July to December 2021, with data collected using standardised questionnaires for HRQoL, depression, anxiety, stress, cognitive impairment and self-structured satisfaction with nursing care. Qualitative data were gathered through focused group discussions. Results: The mean global health score among sarcoma survivors was 79.48 ± 16.26. A significant number of survivors had symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression (30%), severe anxiety (12%), stress (16%) and mild cognitive impairment (5%). Significant mean rank differences were observed between anxiety and financial difficulty (p < 0.05), emotional functioning (p < 0.001), cognitive functioning (p < 0.001), pain (<0.05), insomnia (p < 0.001), fatigue (p < 0.001), anorexia (p < 0.05) and nausea/vomiting (p < 0.001). Educational qualification had a significant association with depression and anxiety while family history of cancer emerged as a significant factor associated with anxiety and stress among survivors. Qualitative analysis revealed themes related to body image, societal discrimination, socio-economic impact, marriage concerns and fertility issues. Survivor satisfaction with nursing care was good. Conclusion: A substantial number of sarcoma survivors had an average HRQoL and experienced depression, anxiety and stress. Our study emphasizes the importance of holistic survivorship care, involving nurses in post-treatment support, and addressing societal discrimination and psychosocial concerns to enhance their quality of life. Implications for cancer survivors: Our study calls for a holistic approach to sarcoma survivor care and emphasizes the importance of personalised survivorship care plans led by nurses to address the diverse needs of sarcoma survivors in India. Such plans should encompass strategies for managing depression, anxiety and stress, along with addressing body image concerns and social support.

Abstract:213 Background: The number of breast cancer survivors is increasing due to improvements in care and an aging population, leading to an increased need for care that addresses the physical and psychological needs of patients after completion of active treatment. The Sunnybrook Breast Cancer Survivorship Program was established to provide comprehensive evidence-based survivorship care and facilitate the transition to family doctors. Despite rising interest in dedicated survivorship care, there is little consensus regarding which individuals are likely to suffer the most long-term impacts of breast cancer treatment. Factors as varied as age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and treatment type can influence Quality-of-Life (QoL) outcomes. This cross-sectional assessment uses mixed methods to evaluate QoL trends in the patient cohort. Methods: Current patients of the Sunnybrook Breast Cancer Survivorship Program were asked to complete a baseline information form, as well as the EORTC QLQ-30 and BR-45, two validated measures of QoL for breast cancer patients and survivors. QoL, functional, and symptom domains were calculated from these responses accordingly and analyzed statistically. Patients reported their most bothersome QoL concerns through an open-ended questionnaire, which was analyzed and organized thematically. 99 patients have been recruited to date, of a planned 200. Results: We find that sexual health is of importance for this population, with 50 (50.5%) participants reporting sexual activity. Patients under 50 have poorer sexual functioning scores (p<0.01) as well as more issues with body image (p<0.05) than older survivors. Both married and under-50 patients are significantly more likely to have poorer outlooks on the future (p<0.05; p<0.01). Younger patients also tended to have worse role functioning, cognitive functioning, emotional functioning, and social functioning scores, though these differences were not statistically significant. Thematic analysis of qualitative data showed that patients’ chief concerns were the impact that ongoing side effects had on their daily functioning, impact of treatment on body image, disruptions to work and personal relationships, and strong anxiety about potential recurrence. Conclusions: While it is understood that younger BC survivors face unique challenges, our findings indicate that these obstacles persist into older age groups. In addition to physical side effects, such concerns as body image issues, social strain, and emotional functioning can drive QoL scores for these patients. Notably, many patients endorsed strong anxiety regarding potential recurrence that affected QoL, and identified dedicated survivorship follow-up as an ameliorating factor. Further research should be conducted into the unique needs of under-50 survivors, as well as the role of recurrence anxiety in impacting QoL.

Abstract:Background: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) still experience fatigue that may impair their quality of life even after completion of treatment. There is a need to understand the sociodemographic and treatment-related factors associated with this to develop relevant and effective interventions.Aim: To assess the relationship between cancer-related fatigue and sociodemographic and treatment-related factors in BCS.Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 80 BCS attending the radiation oncology University College Hospital Ibadan. Their sociodemographic, disease and treatment characteristics were obtained. Fatigue Symptom Inventory was used to assess fatigue. A score of at least 3 on average fatigue severity item was taken as cut-off for clinically meaningful fatigue.Result: The mean age of patients was 51.5 years. The prevalence of fatigue was 22.5%. On univariate analysis, fatigue was significantly associated with younger age (p = 0.022), employment (p = 0.006), stage of the disease(p = 0.014), anthracycline-based chemotherapy (p = 0.026), last chemotherapy less than 1 year (p = 0.001). Using logistic regression analysis, stage (Odds ratio (OR) 5.115, 95% CI 1.029-25.438, p = 0.046), employment status (OR 52.224, 95% CI 3.611-755.899, p = 0.004) and year of last cycle chemotherapy (OR 6.375, 95% CI 1.108-36.680, p = 0.038) were associated with fatigue in BCS.Conclusion: About a quarter of BCS reported fatigue. Advance stage disease, employment status and receiving last course of chemotherapy less than a year are correlates of fatigue.
Cancer-related fatigue and associated disability in post-treatment cancer survivors

Abstract:PurposeCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most prevalent and distressing symptom among cancer patients and survivors. However, research on its prevalence and related disability in the post-treatment survivorship period remains limited. We sought to describe the occurrence of CRF within three time points in the post-treatment survivorship trajectory.MethodsA self-administered mail-based questionnaire which included the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue (FACT-F) and the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 was sent to three cohorts of disease-free breast, prostate or colorectal cancer survivors (6–18 months; 2–3 years; and 5–6 years post-treatment). Clinical information was extracted from chart review. Frequencies of significant fatigue by diagnostic group and time cohorts were studied and compared. Multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to examine the associations between CRF and demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables.ResultsOne thousand two hundred ninety-four questionnaire packages were returned (63 % response rate). A total of 29 % (95 % CI [27 % to 32 %]) of the sample reported significant fatigue (FACT-F ≤34), and this was associated with much higher levels of disability (p < 0.0001). Breast (40 % [35 % to 44 %]) and colorectal (33 % [27 % to 38 %]) cancer survivors had significantly higher rates of fatigue compared with the prostate group (17 % [14 % to 21 %]) (p < 0.0001). Fatigue levels did not differ between the three time cohorts. The main factors associated with CRF included physical symptom burden, depression, and co-morbidity (AUC, 0.919 [0.903 to 0.936]).ConclusionsClinically relevant levels of CRF are present in approximately 1/3 of cancer survivors up to 6 years post-treatment, and this is associated with high levels of disability.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsClinicians need to be aware of the chronicity of CRF and assess for it routinely in medical practice. While there is no gold standard treatment, non-pharmacological interventions with established efficacy can reduce its severity and possibly minimize its disabling impact on patient functioning. Attention must be paid to the co-occurrence and need for possible treatment of depression and other co-occurring physical symptoms as contributing factors.

Abstract:Background Due to the paucity of reliable data to determine the components of family-based comprehensive care for cancer in India, we explored the familial implications of gynaecological and breast cancer diagnosis and treatment through a mixed-method study. Methods The mixed method study included 130 women aged above 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of gynaecological or breast cancer recruited from three selected tertiary hospitals in Kerala, India. Information on quality of life (36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36)), psychological distress (distress thermometer), and the familial, interpersonal, social, and community impacts of cancer (semi-structured interview guide) were elicited. Linear regression was used to identify the factors associated with distress and the factors were explored further using thematic analysis. Results Patients included in the study (n = 130; mean age 57.5 years) had moderate or mild (66.9%) to severe (25.4%) distress. Concerns about work (93%), difficulty in; home care and housing (82%), care for dependents (65%), unempathetic family (87.6%), isolation (70%), and body image (65%) were major reasons for their distress. Physiological, social, and family-related stressors among the respondents included challenges in physical functioning, intense physical symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite and sleep, role restrictions, alterations in family responsibilities, functional dependency, inadequate family support, challenges in social and interpersonal interactions, and an unsupportive work environment. Conclusion Cancer is a health crisis that involves psychological, social, and economic distress, compelling professionals to design multifaceted individualized care packages rather than only concentrating on medical management to alleviate their distress.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common subjective feeling and disabling symptom complex experienced by patients with cancer. This study aimed to identify the subjective perceptions of Korean patients with cancer about CRF to help the development of basic intervention strategies for these patients.METHODS: Q methodology was used to examine the subjective perceptions of patients with cancer about CRF. Thirty-one patients with cancer, hospitalized at a university hospital in Seoul, Korea, were recruited into this study and classified 41 selected Q statements using a nine-point scale. Data were analysed using PC-QUANL for Windows.RESULTS: Data analysis revealed that distinct perceptions about CRF do exist among Korean patients with cancer. Three types of perceptions were identified: dominant self-reliance, positive-conformist and self-deprecating exhaustion. These three types explained 53.0% of the variance (40.2%, 8.2% and 4.6%, respectively).CONCLUSIONS: This study identified three types of perceptions about CRF among Korean patients with cancer. These findings provide baseline data to develop customised interventions for caring strategies. This study also informs health professionals in other countries about the perceptions of Korean patients with cancer about CRF.

Abstract:PurposeTo identify potential correlates of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) after curative breast cancer (BC) treatment. The hypothesis was that fatigue would be more severe among women treated with cardiotoxic drugs, with poor physical condition and those who exercised less.MethodsObservational cross-sectional design. Fatigue was evaluated through PERFORM Questionnaire (multi-item, multi-dimensional). Patient-reported assessments and objective information regarding clinical data, physical activity (PA) and physical condition were analysed as potential correlates of CRF.ResultsOne hundred eighty women who remained free of disease were recruited. The prevalence of fatigue interfering with quality of life was 43%. Weight, resting and recovery heart rate were positively associated with fatigue. Age and time from diagnosis were negatively associated. Previous therapies, objectively assessed weekly PA, cardiorespiratory condition, muscular strength and adherence to Mediterranean diet were not associated with CRF.ConclusionsCRF is a prevalent problem after BC treatment. Objectively assessed PA, cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength did not predict CRF. The association of heart rate and fatigue deserves a further insight. Future research should include longitudinal studies and determination of biomarkers.Implications for cancer survivorsBC survivors, especially younger and overweight women, should be informed about fatigue as a potential persistent symptom through all stages of the cancer trajectory and into survivorship. They also should be routinely screened for CRF.

Abstract:Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. As the outcome of any cancer treatment is not only dependent on disease-free interval but also on the quality of life (QOL) of the survivor. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate QOL of breast cancer patients and sociodemographic factors affecting QOL of patients. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 breast cancer patients and 50 controls, which fulfilled the selection criteria. The sociodemographic profile and QOL using the World Health Organization QOL-BREF were analyzed using the descriptive statistical methods. Results: All the QOL indicators were statistically significantly ( P = 0.0001) lower among breast cancer patients. QOL indicators were statistically significantly ( P < 0.01) lower in young age. Not much difference was observed according to religion and these were significantly ( P < 0.05) higher among the homemakers. There was no significant difference in all the QOL indicators according to the marital status of the cases. However, these were significantly ( P < 0.05) higher among rural cases compared with urban one. The QOL indicators were statistically significantly ( P < 0.05) higher among the cases living in joint families than nuclear. No difference was observed among different socioeconomic status. Conclusion: QOL was significantly lower among the breast cancer patients. Age, occupational status, type of family, and locality were the significant factors that affect the QOL of breast cancer patients. Hence, psychological and social support can play an important role in improving QOL of cancer patient.

Abstract:Carbazole-based bisboronic acids were found to be enantioselective fluorescent sensors for tartaric acid. The fluorescence response toward the enantiomers of tartaric acid at neutral pH displayed enhancement/diminishment. The sensor displays an unusual fluorescence intensity-pH relationship with diminished emission at acidic pH but enhanced emission at basic pH. Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the fluorophore to the protonated amine/phenylboronic acid unit is proposed to be responsible for this effect, which is rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The aim of this case report was to evaluate the impact of immunohistochemical markers in diagnosing the primary site of adenocarcinoma in the abdominopelvic region. METHODS Surgicopathologic data were obtained from laparotomy and necropsy. Paraffin-embedded tissue from the ovary and jejunum was stained with hematoxylin and eosin, as well as with immunohistochemical stains for cytokeratin 20 and cytokeratin 7. RESULTS A 53-year-old African American woman underwent an emergency laparotomy due to small bowel obstruction. During the operation, in addition to a complex adnexal mass as the cause of obstruction, a small solid jejunal tumor was also identified. Pathologic evaluation of the two sites demonstrated an infiltrating moderately to poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with mucinous features. The malignant cells from both intestinal and ovarian sites showed immunoreactivity for cytokeratin 20 and revealed negative staining for cytokeratin 7. These results confirmed the diagnosis of intestinal primary with ovarian metastasis, which was initially misdiagnosed as an ovarian primary. CONCLUSION Given the potential difficulty in determining the primary site of these tumors, immunohistochemistry proved to be a useful tool in reaching the correct diagnosis.
Quality of life of adult cancer survivors enrolled in Humanitas Research Hospital's survivorship care model

Abstract:Introduction: Clinicians should address the different health needs of cancer survivors (CS). We investigated concerns about physical/psychosocial symptoms and quality of life (QoL) of CS enrolled in our survivorship program. Our primary aim is to describe the CS population and their quality of life, considering both physical and psychosocial issues, with the intent to identify some possible association with the most frequently observed variables. Methods: Adult patients, after ≥ 5 years from achieving complete hematologic or solid tumor remission, were included. The self-administered questionnaire used in the survey was based on the "Cancer Survivors Survey of Needs" (Mayo Clinic). Results: We analyzed data from 191 CS. The median age was 63 years (53 years at diagnosis), and 70% of patients were females. A total of 93 patients (49%) reported a quality of life (QoL) score > 2. The most common psychosocial symptom concerns were fear of relapse (53%), genetic counseling (43%), living with uncertainty (35%), defining a new sense of normal (31%), and managing stress (28%). Females are more at risk to develop the following concerns compared with males: pain (40% vs 21%), sleep disturbance (54% vs 30%), weight gain (42% vs 21%), osteoporosis (41% vs 11%), body changes (45% vs 13%), hair or skincare issues (42% vs 16%), hot flashes (40% vs 11%), fear of recurrence (74% vs 54%), and living with a sense of uncertainty (53% vs 29%). Younger patients reported a higher score (> 2) for physical and psychological concerns compared with older patients. Conclusion: In this study, differences in physical and psychological symptoms/stressors among women and younger patients were identified. Female and younger patients appear to report physical and psychosocial concerns more frequently than other subgroups of patients. These observations should be validated and deepened in larger, prospective studies and considered during the long-term follow-up of these subgroups of patients.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a highly prevalent and debilitating symptom reported by breast cancer survivors (BCS). CRF has been associated with the co-occurrence of anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality, cognitive impairment, which are collectively termed as psychoneurophysiological (PNP) symptoms. CRF and these PNP symptoms are often reported during and after treatment with long-lasting distress. It is unclear how CRF and these PNP symptoms influence each other. This study aimed to explore predictive factors (i.e., PNP symptoms and social-demographic factors) of CRF, and test exploratory path models of the relationships of CRF with PNP symptoms (depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, and cognitive function) in BCS.METHODS: This paper is part of a larger descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study. Validated and reliable instruments assessed CRF, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, and cognitive function. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression models, and path analysis were employed.RESULTS: Patients (N = 373) who reported less bodily pain had worst CRF (r = -0.45, p < .01). Significant predictors of CRF included depression, sleep disorder, bodily pain, perceived cognitive ability, and dispositional (state) optimism. Depression alone accounted for 31% of the variance in CRF. An integrative path model with bodily pain, neuropathic pain, CRF, and depression showed a good fit across different indices (CFI = 0.993, RMSEA = 0.047, 90% CI 0-0.12, SRMR = 0.027).CONCLUSIONS: This study identified significant predictors of CRF and revealed a good fit mediation model with significant pathways for CRF, suggesting that a common etiology may underpin the co-occurrence of CRF with PNP symptoms (pain and depression). However, further investigation with longitudinal design is necessary to explore the causal relationships of these symptoms. Evidence-based strategies/interventions are needed to reduce or eliminate the burden of these symptoms on the lives of BCS.

Abstract:Background Caregivers of cancer patients experience excessive emotional and financial stress. Objective To determine the quality of life (QOL) of caregivers of cancer patients and factors affecting it in caregivers attending the OPD of a governmental tertiary care cancer center in the sub-Himalayan region. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was used. A pre-validated caregiver quality of life (CQOL) questionnaire was completed by consenting caregivers of 96 outpatient attendees. Results The mean total QOL scores were higher in attendants of subjects who did not undergo surgery versus those who underwent surgery (p-value: 0.04) and in those who received 0-5 versus >5 chemotherapy cycles (p-value: 0.015). On subdomain analyses, the burden was significantly greater in caregivers of patients who did not undergo surgery (p-value: 0.02) and had a higher Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scale (p-value: 0.03). Disruptiveness was significantly higher in married individuals (p-value: 0.01) and those aged between 36 and 60 years (p-value: 0.003). Positive adaptation was worse in caregivers with another family member suffering from chronic illness (p-value: 0.041) and in professional and skilled workers (p-value: 0.03). The greater financial burden was experienced by caregivers belonging to lower socioeconomic status (p-value: 0.03). On putting these factors in the regression model, the non-specific domain of 0-5 cycles had poor CQOL, i.e., higher scores. The burden score was more in ECOG stages 3 and 4 in comparison with stages 1 and 2. Married individuals had significant disruption. Individuals aged between 36 and 60 years perceived more disruption in their lives. A more financial impact was observed on the lower middle and lower class compared to the upper and upper middle class. Conclusion Caregivers of cancer patients experience significant stress and burden. Counseling and social and financial support to caregivers may help improve CQOL.
Combination of fertility preservation strategies in young women with recently diagnosed cancer.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/AIMS The study describes clinical management and outcomes of currently available fertility preservation techniques in a set of 154 young female cancer patients. METHODS Patients in reproductive age with newly diagnosed cancer were offered embryo or oocyte cryopreservation, ovarian tissue cryopreservation and the administration of GnRH analogues during chemotherapy. Particular attention was given to the technical aspects and clinical application of these fertility preservation techniques. RESULTS During the study period (2004-2009), 154 young female cancer patients were offered fertility preservation counseling. Patient's average age was 29.4 years and average parity was 0.7 children. Administration of GnRH analogues (n = 123, 79.9%) and ovarian tissue cryopreservation (n = 15, 9.7%) were the most commonly used fertility preservation strategies. In 20 cases (16.1%), the combination of several fertility preservation techniques was offered to individually selected patients. CONCLUSIONS Combination of fertility preservation techniques gives young cancer patients the best chance for future fertility and should be concentrated in specialized centers.
Health-related quality of life of cancer patients: Findings from Western Rajasthan

Abstract:Introduction: Cancer is one of the major public health concerns leading to high trends of mortality and morbidity in India. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an indicator of the sense of well-being applicable, which includes all the domains of physical, social, emotional, and functional well-being. The inferences can strengthen the palliative care needs of patients. This study was conducted to assess the HRQoL of patients on anticancer therapy and to measure the perceived palliative care needs amongst diagnosed patients on cancer therapy. Methodology: Mixed method approach was used to assess the objectives of the study. FACT-G questionnaire was used to assess the HRQoL of patients among a sample size of 290 participants for quantitative analysis and 9 for in-depth interviews. Data were generated and analyzed in SPSS version 23. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to test the association between the well-being score and demographic factors. Results: The mean age of the study population was 52.46 ± 13.83 years with 65% females. The mean FACT-G score was 61.1 ± 17.1 with mean domain values of 14.97 (physical well-being), 16.55 (social well-being), 16.21 (emotional well-being) and 13.35 (functional well-being). FACT-G score was significantly associated with education level, type of cancer and type of anticancer therapy. Qualitative themes described pertaining to delayed diagnosis, financial distress, side effects, social isolation (factors worsening QoL) and support, and attitude (factors improving QoL). Conclusion: HRQOL scores were found low in all types of cancer and early referral for palliative care might have a positive effect on the quality of life of cancer patients. Cancer is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality with its profound social and economic consequences leading to impoverishment and societal inequity.
