Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of interprofessional education (IPE) and the efforts required to promote, popularize, and implement it in Korea. The IPE status of 40 medical colleges was investigated using a survey with questions regarding the details of IPE, the future plans and necessary support required, and the reasons for not implementing IPE. Thirty-two medical colleges responded, of which 10 are implementing or have implemented IPE. Most of these colleges started IPE in 2018, and the duration of IPE was less than 9 hours. All medical colleges held classes with nursing students. As for the type of IPE, there were independent courses for IPE, one-time special lectures, or partial sessions in one course. Lectures, discussions and presentations, role playing, and high-fidelity simulations were mainly used as educational methods. The support and interest of the dean was the most important facilitating factor. No medical colleges were currently preparing to implement IPE, four colleges had planned IPE but failed to implement it, and 16 had no plans for IPE at all. All medical colleges cited scheduling or cooperation with other majors as the most significant barrier. All the colleges listed their requirements for educational materials, cases, guidelines, and teaching and learning methods for IPE from external institutions. To activate IPE, it is necessary to create an appropriate atmosphere and conditions for developing IPE competencies and a model suitable for the domestic situation. External medical education support organizations should distribute IPE development guidelines and educational materials, form a network between medical colleges with IPE experience, and make efforts to promote the importance of IPE.
A scoping review of studies on nursing simulation education using standardized patients in Korea

Abstract:Purpose : This study is a scoping literature review on simulation education using domestic standardized patients based on the scoping literature review protocol presented by The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), and provides basic data for future simulation education using standardized patients. Method : The literature search was conducted through 4 domestic sources (DBpia, KISS, KMBASE, NDSL), and documents published from January 2011 to December 2021. The main search terms were ‘standardized patient’ and ‘simulation’. As a result, 21 articles that met the selection criteria were selected. Results : The results show that quantitative research was the largest with 17 (81.0%) out of a total of 21 articles, and that nursing simulation education as the main topic (title) had the most articles with 7 (33.3%). Communication ability was found to be the most common variable with 8 pieces (38.1%). Conclusion : By means of the analysis results of the literature review on the subject range of simulation education using domestic standardized patients, it will be possible to use them as meaningful data to improve the effectiveness and quality of simulation education using standardized patients.
A Literature Review of Simulation-Based Nursing Education in Korea

Abstract:This study reviewed the papers that studied the effect of simulation nursing education in the nursing field and examined the trend of simulation nursing education for nursing college students in Korea. Background: Simulation-based education started receiving attention as a pedagogical method in order to provide medical service of high quality in an ethical and safe environment. This has been of great importance during the coronavirus disease 2019 global pandemic. This literature review was conducted to suggest a direction for simulation-based nursing education in Korea. Methods: For literature searches, the authors used the following search terms in the Web of Science, CINAHL, Scopus, PubMed—‘utilization’, ‘simulation,’ ‘nursing student’, ‘nursing education’. A final search was conducted on 6 January 2021. The materials for this study were collected through literature searches according to the PRISMA guidelines. Results: 25 papers were selected as the final literature for analysis. The study was conducted for 48 percent of senior students in nursing college students in Korea (N = 12). High fidelity (HF) as the simulation type was 44 percent (N = 11). The simulation education subjects were composed of 52 percent adult health nursing (N = 13). According to educational goals described by Benzamine Bloom (1956), 90% in the psychomotor domain is considered a positive learning achievement. Conclusions: Effectiveness in the psychomotor domain through simulation-based training is correlated with expert nursing. It is essential to develop a systematic debriefing model and methods to evaluate performance and learning in the short- and long-term to expand the effectiveness of simulation-based education in nursing.
International Collaborative Faculty Development Program on Simulation-Based Healthcare Education: A Report on Its Successes and Challenges

Abstract:PURPOSE: Countries that are less experienced with simulation-based healthcare education (SBHE) often import Western programs to initiate their efforts to deliver effective simulation training. Acknowledging cultural differences, we sought to determine whether faculty development program on SBHE in the United States could be transported successfully to train faculty members in Korea.METHODS: An international, collaborative, multi-professional program from a pre-existing Western model was adapted. The process focused on prioritization of curricular elements based on local needs, translation of course materials, and delivery of the program in small group facilitation exercises. Three types of evaluation data were collected: participants' simulation experience; participants' ratings of the course; and participant's self-assessment of the impact of the course on their knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) toward simulation teaching.RESULTS: Thirty faculty teachers participated in the course. Eighty percent of the participants answered that they spent less than 25% of their time as simulation instructors. Time spent on planning, scenario development, delivering training, research, and administrative work ranged from 10% to 30%. Twenty-eight of 30 participants agreed or strongly agreed that the course was excellent and relevant to their needs. The participants' assessment of the impact of the course on their KSA toward simulation teaching improved significantly.CONCLUSION: Although there were many challenges to overcome, a systematic approach in the adaptation of a Western simulation faculty development course model was successfully implemented in Korea, and the program improves self-confidence and learning in participants.

Abstract:Introduction Enhancing interprofessional education (IPE) fosters collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals specializing in musculoskeletal (MSK) care. This approach presents a valuable opportunity to address the pressing MSK disease burden in developing countries, with high prevalence rates and limited resources. While an abundance of literature on the various elements of IPE among healthcare students and professionals exists, shared contexts of practice of South African MSK disciplines are not currently developed through IPE at higher education level, establishing a need for South African formalised curricular IPE interventions with an explicit focus on undergraduate students of MSK healthcare professions. Methods and analysis The intended scoping review protocol is guided by the framework set out by Arksey and O'Malley, where the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews will guide the process of reporting. English sources (qualitative and quantitative methodological studies, conference papers and proceedings, systematic reviews, grey literature, unpublished materials, theses and dissertations) from the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, ERIC and ProQuest with no date restriction will be included. A researcher, an independent reviewer and research librarian will search and extract data from abstracts and full texts for this scoping review, where any arising disagreements will be resolved by discussion. Reference lists of relevant literature will be scrutinised. Relevant literature will be recorded on a referencing software and deduplicated. The data collection will take place between May and October 2023. The findings will be reported narratively with the use of tables. Ethics and dissemination This scoping review does not require ethical approval as all literature used already exists in the public domain with no involvement of human participants. The findings from this planned review will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and will be presented at higher education conferences. This scoping review protocol was registered on Open Science Framework with the registration osf.io/c27n4.

Abstract:The role of effective interprofessional teamwork is especially vital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where infants facing emergency situations are admitted. Proper neonatal resuscitation, facilitated by comprehensive resuscitation training, can significantly decrease the mortality rates associated with neonatal asphyxia and respiratory failure. This study aimed to develop a simulation-based interprofessional education (IPE) programme for medical staff working in a nursery and NICU and to assess its effectiveness on teamwork, communication skills, clinical performance, clinical judgement, interprofessional attitudes, and education satisfaction.

Abstract:Background: Learning in silos during the undergraduate years results in ineffective collaborative practice leading to adverse events. Simulation training using the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS)® framework has been shown to be effective in enhancing teamwork skills among healthcare professionals. This study aims to evaluate an interprofessional simulation education (IPSE) module for undergraduate medical and nursing students on teamwork and communication skills using the TeamSTEPPS® framework. Methods: An IPSE module was developed by an interprofessional team of faculty. A convenient sample of medical and nursing undergraduate interns participated in trauma simulation scenarios before and after a didactic session on interprofessional education (IPE) and TeamSTEPPS® 2.0. The pre-post performance was assessed by faculty and pre-post self-assessment of the IPSE training and interprofessional education collaborative (IPEC) competencies by the participants. Quantitative data were analysed using a paired t-test of the mean scores and analysis of variance. The themes that emerged from audio recordings of the debriefing, and written reflections of the participants, yielded data for qualitative thematic analysis. Results: The scores of team performance, self-assessment of IPSE training, and IPEC competencies revealed statistically significant values. Themes that emerged included the need for IPSE in the curriculum, impact of structured tools for communication on patient safety, and awareness of the roles and responsibilities in interprofessional teamwork. A survey conducted two weeks after completion of the module showed positive feelings among participants about interprofessional collaboration. Conclusion: The study specifically assessed the effectiveness of an IPSE module based on TeamSTEPPS® guidelines in improving communication and teamwork skills among medical and nursing undergraduates.

Abstract:Cytotoxic T cells are able to recognise whether a cell of our body is infected by a virus or whether it has acquired mutations leading to tumour formation. The cells show on their surface what kind of proteins are synthesised intracellularly and whether non-self proteins encoded by a virus or tumour antigens are among them. The proteins are presented not as functionally intact proteins but as peptide fragments which originate from their regular intracellular degradation. This fragmentation is accomplished by the proteasome, a large proteinase complex in the cytoplasm and nucleus of all cells. Upon stimulation with the antiviral cytokine interferon-gamma, subunits of the proteasome are exchanged, thus leading to optimised production of peptide antigens. In this review we introduce the system of antigen processing by the proteasome and sum up our latest results on the question how the interferon-gamma-mediated reorganisation of the proteasome occurs and what consequences and benefits this has for the cytotoxic immune response against viruses and tumours.
Interprofessional education among musculoskeletal healthcare professions: A scoping review

Abstract:Objective: To examine peer-reviewed literature involving undergraduate interprofessional education (IPE) focusing on musculoskeletal (MSK) healthcare professions. Methods: Methodological searches were conducted on electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, ERIC, and ProQuest. No date restrictions were applied. English sources (qualitative and quantitative methodological studies, conference papers and proceedings, systematic reviews, grey literature, unpublished materials, theses, and dissertations) were included. A researcher, independent reviewer, and research librarian completed the search and data extraction from June to October 2023. Disagreements were resolved by discussion. ATLAS.ti was used to analyze data by generating codes linked to the text. Findings were reported in a narrative format and by using tables. Results: Initially, 2894 articles were retrieved and screened for relevance. After rigorous screening procedures, 18 articles from various countries were deemed eligible for inclusion. The included studies were conducted within the date range of 2010 to 2024. The included studies employed mixed methods (n = 9), quantitative (n = 5), and qualitative (n = 4) approaches. Combined medical and physiotherapy student cohorts were prominently featured in 67% (n = 12) of the reviewed studies. All 18 studies incorporated the implementation and/or evaluation of an IPE intervention. Thematic analysis revealed 5 overarching themes, encompassing the benefits, barriers, interventions, strategies, evaluation, and general findings related to IPE. Conclusion: The reviewed literature emphasizes a significant gap in IPE initiatives concerning various MSK health providers, including chiropractors, podiatrists, biokineticists, and osteopaths. This paucity accentuates the need for further exploration and evaluation of IPE within MSK-specific contexts, crucial for addressing and mitigating the escalating global burden of MSK diseases.

Abstract:Background Interprofessional partnerships are a core competency of registered nursing and child life curricula. Despite the need for interprofessional education (IPE), gaps in using IPE simulation for both disciplines still need to be addressed. Methods This cross-sectional study used survey methodology to examine nursing and child life students' attitudes toward working in interdisciplinary teams, satisfaction and confidence in learning, and satisfaction with the overall design, following a high-fidelity Simulation Interprofessional Education (Sim-IPE) experience. Results Nursing and child life students reported positive attitudes regarding the Sim-IPE healthcare team, satisfaction and confidence in learning, and satisfaction with the Sim-IPE design. Conclusion Sim-IPE is an effective teaching strategy for nursing and child life students.

Abstract:Introduction: This scoping review aimed to examine 1) types of inter-professional (IPE) interventions using Strosahl’s typology framework, 2) practice outcomes related to healthcare setting and patients using Kirkpatrick’s model of training evaluation, and 3) enablers and challenges related to the effectiveness of IPE interventions specific to the mental healthcare setting in order to guide the development of such future programs. Methods: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews. Several databases were searched for relevant studies from database inception until December 2023. Articles were included if it 1) involved IPE interventions within mental healthcare, 2) reported practice outcomes related to healthcare setting and patients, and 3) was published in English. Variables of interest included the mode of IPE intervention using Strosahl’s typology, enablers, and challenges related to IPE interventions. Results: Overall, 16 studies were included. IPE intervention outcomes within healthcare setting related to shifts in practice culture, engagement with family members, and increased collaborations with other inter-professional groups. Reported patient outcomes included clinical improvements (e.g., reduced depression and anxiety, psychotropic drug use, better psychosocial functioning), patient empowerment, satisfaction, and confidence in treatment. The enablers and challenges included resource limitations, inter-professional group and individual participation, and pedagogy. Discussion: Future efforts in IPE mental healthcare practice can focus on garnering sustained institutional support, identifying and investing in committed faculty, encouraging greater learner participation, and making iterative changes to the IPE program structure to facilitate involvement of inter-professional disciplines for better patient care.

Abstract:Abstract Objective Increased demands from healthcare services have led to new roles for healthcare professionals (HCPs). Simulation based learning (SBL) can offer multidisciplinary HCPs and students a format to train for such emerging roles. The aim of this work was to adapt existing nursing SBL to involve pharmacy students and evaluate perceptions and effectiveness of SBL when used for interprofessional education (IPE). Methods Settings were a simulated hospital ward and a general practitioner (GP) practice. Participants were pharmacy and nursing students. Evaluation was by questionnaires and interviews. Ethical approval was obtained from the University Ethics Committee. Key Findings A total of 440 students participated. The majority of respondents (317/330;96%) found the sessions useful. All elements were highly rated: briefing (315/340;93%), setting (301/321;94%), scenario (325/338;96%), feedback (303/327;93%), interaction with the “patient” (328/338;97%), interactions with other HCP trainee (293/329;89%). The majority (304/327;93%) agreed that they felt the sessions had enhanced their skills. Significant (p ≤ 0.05) enhancement in communication confidence was perceived by the students. Students gained understanding of each other’s roles, and appreciated practicing communication and teamwork. Conclusions Students recognised the importance, usefulness and need for IPE. SBL has the potential to support a variety of HCPs to facilitate uptake of new roles and working in multidisciplinary teams.
Retrolabyrinthine Surgery: A Direct Approach To The Cerebellopontine Angle

Abstract:The direct route to the cerebellopontine (CP) angle through the ear (retrolabyrinthine approach) represents a significant advance in neuro-otologic surgery. After incising the dura between the endolymphatic sac and the lateral venous sinus, a self-retaining retractor is used to collapse the lateral sinus, which provides a wide exposure of the CP angle, with visualization of the 5th through 11th cranial nerves. The retrolabyrinthine approach is a safe and direct route to the CP angle and has advantages over the suboccipital approach. Vestibular neurectomy through the retrolabyrinthine approach is the most frequently performed procedure and has replaced middle fossa vestibular neurectomy in our practice.
Realist review of interprofessional education for health care students: What works for whom and why

Abstract:Interprofessional education (IPE) programs, are complex, logistically challenging, and can be expensive to deliver, but these matters are offset by the perceived benefits of IPE. There is little clarity regarding how IPE contributes to the desirable development of collaborative practitioners. To guide educators in the design of IPE programs there is a need to understand the elements that promote optimal learning. A realist review was conducted to identify the mechanisms and resources that contribute to IPE outcomes. Four databases were searched until April 2020 for empirical studies describing mandatory IPE for pre-registration medical, nursing and other health professional students. Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria. Two novel learning design elements were identified; interdependence, where there is a need for genuine contribution of skills and knowledge from the professions learning together to successfully complete tasks, and embodiment, where through being immersed in an authentic scenario, learners feel what it is like to work in their professions. Other observations supported previous research findings such as the importance of skilled facilitators to promote interaction and reflection. Interprofessional interventions incorporating these specific learning design features seem likely to enhance the impact of IPE, thus making the best use of limited institutional resources and student time.

Abstract:Aim This study aimed to investigate the effects of interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning on the interprofessional knowledge of healthcare professionals. Background Interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning have been employed to prepare learners to collaborate in clinical settings. This strategy could help healthcare professionals to better understand each other, develop interdisciplinary shared values and promote mutual respect between professions, while reducing errors and adverse events in hospital. A meta-analysis was performed to investigate the effects of interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning on healthcare professionals. Design A systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods A systematic search was conducted of databases including Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Plus with full text, Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline Complete, PubMed and Web of Science from their inception to September 5, 2023. The study included randomized controlled trials that provided interdisciplinary simulation-based education to healthcare professionals. Protocol trials or studies that did not include median or mean and standard deviation were excluded. The pooled standardized mean differences of outcomes were analyzed using a DerSimonian–Laird random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using I 2 . Egger's regression test was used to examine publication bias indicated in forest plots. Results Ten randomized control trials with a total of 766 participants were included in the pooled analyses. Interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning positively enhanced the interprofessional knowledge of healthcare professionals (pooled SMD = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.10–0.50; p < 0.001). Egger's regression test results were non-significant, indicating that publication bias had little impact on the pooled SMDs. Conclusion Interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning for health professionals appear to be significantly beneficial for increasing their interprofessional knowledge. This strategy highlights the importance of providing a well-developed scenario with relevant properties, which applies valid and rigorous instruments, to measure behavioral changes induced by interdisciplinary simulation-based teaching and learning.

Identifying the interprofessional education delivery mode that can maximize learning outcomes within available resources is crucial for achieving the sustainability of an interprofessional education program.ObjectivesTo examine the learning outcomes of simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education modules and to analyze the variable costs between these two interprofessional education modules.DesignA prospective quasi-experimental study.SettingA medical university in Northern Taiwan.Participants24 medical students and 48 nursing students enrolled in a 4-week simulation-based interprofessional education or video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education program.MethodsStudents' medical task performance, critical medical task performance, team behavior performance, and interprofessional collaboration attitude were examined at the pretest and posttest by using an objective structured checklist and team performance rating scale with a hands-on simulation model and structured questionnaires. The variable costs for simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education were estimated upon the completion of the course.ResultsAll learning outcomes significantly improved for both the groups from the pretest to posttest. After the intervention, the simulation-based interprofessional education group exhibited significantly higher scores in medical task performance, critical medical task performance and team behavior performance than the video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education group at the posttest. No significant difference was noted in interprofessional collaboration attitude between the groups. Cost analysis revealed that the simulation-based interprofessional education program was approximately two times more expensive in terms of staffing costs and required 1.3 times greater space charges than the video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education program.ConclusionBoth simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education modules effectively improved medical and nursing students' medical task performance, critical medical task performance and team behavior performance. The simulation-based interprofessional education group had more favorable learning outcomes, but the associated costs were higher. Educators should consider both learning outcomes and cost when choosing a design strategy simulation-based interprofessional education vs. video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education for interprofessional education module development.

Abstract:An interprofessional education (IPE) simulation-based geriatric palliative care training was developed to educate health professions students in team communication. In health care, interprofessional communication is critical to team collaboration and patient and family caregiver outcomes. Studies suggest that acquiring skills to work on health care teams and communicate with team members should occur during the early stage of professional education. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC®) competency-based framework was used to inform the training. An evaluation examined attitudes toward health care teams, self-efficacy in communication skills, interprofessional collaboration, and participant satisfaction with the training experience. One-hundred and eleven participants completed pre- and post-training surveys. Overall, a majority of participants (97.3%) were satisfied with the training and reported more positive attitudes toward health care teams and greater self-efficacy in team communication skills. IPE participants had higher collaboration scores compared to observer learners. Further research is needed to explore long-term effects of IPE in clinical practice.
