Abstract:Composted sewage sludge was investigated as a promising material for the reclamation or remediation of degraded sites. Using sewage sludge as soil amendment provides environmental benefits and risks while supporting circularity and waste minimisation. This study aims to comprehensively assess the suitability of locally available low-cost sludge treatment for sustainable and environmentally safe topsoil disposal in a brownfield area affected by coal mining. A nine-month composting was conducted before field application to the soil environment. The objectives were to assess: (i) composting time-dependent and pH-dependent metal(loid) leachability from composted sludges, (ii) the effect of sludges on metal(loid) leachability from soil over the first six months, and (iii) metal(loid) plant uptake during the first vegetation season as well as the bioaccumulation and translocation factors. The set of standardised leaching experiments confirmed the positive effect of compost maturity, i.e. despite some fluctuations over time, metal(loid) availability from the final composts was very low. Some metals showed unusual pH-dependent behaviour with the highest leachability at pH 8 due to excessive release of dissolved organic matter from the not-yet-stabilised matrix. Ecotoxicity testing confirmed the safety of the final composts for further soil application. The sludge-amended plots displayed similar metal(loid) leaching and pH evolution in time compared to the control biomass-amended plot. However, plant species ( Artemisia vulgaris L.) that formed the natural vegetation cover of the experimental plots showed cumulative metal(loid) uptake. Cadmium and zinc were identified as the critical metals possibly related to the applied sludges, yielding high bioaccumulation and translocation factors. Yet, the quality of the compost feedstock, heterogeneity, and background values of the brownfield site need to be considered. Nevertheless, soil respiration indicated no adverse effects on soil health six months after sludge application. Overall, the composted material demonstrated potential suitability for remediation application in the studied area.

Abstract:Efficient treatment of sewage sludge may transform waste into stable materials with minimised hazardous properties ready for secondary use. Pyrolysed sewage sludge, sludgechar, has multiple environmental benefits including contaminant sorption capacity and nutrient recycling. The properties of five sludgechars were tested firstly for adsorption efficiency in laboratory solutions before prospective application to soils. A wide variety of metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) was involved. Secondly, the sludgechars (3 % v /v) were incubated in five soils differing in (multi)-metal(loid) presence and the level of contamination. The main aim was to evaluate the metal(loid) immobilisation potential of the sludgechars for soil remediation. Moreover, nutrient supply was investigated to comprehensively assess the material's benefits for soils. All sludgechars were efficient (up to 100 %) for the removal of metal cations while their efficiency for metal(loid) anions was limited in aqueous solutions. Phosphates and sulphates were identified crucial for metal(loid) capture, based on SEM/EDS, XRD and MINTEQ findings. In soils, important fluctuations were observed for Zn, being partially immobilised by the sludgechars in high-Zn tot soils, while partially solubilised in moderate to low-Zn tot soils. Moreover, pH showed to be crucial for material stability, metal(loid) adsorption ability and their immobilisation in soils. Although metal(loid) retention was generally low in soils, nutrient enrichment was significant after sludgechar application. Long-term evaluation of the material sorption efficiency, nutrient supply, and ageing in soil environments will be necessary in future studies.

Abstract:Abstract Sewage sludge contains organic matter and micro and macronutrients which are potentially useful for agricultural usage. However, it can be harmful when containing undesirable amounts of organic pollutants, heavy metals, or pathogens. Our study focused on examining the changes in the extractable nutrient, organic matter and heavy metal contents of a Chernozem soil and the alteration of the soil biological activity as a consequence of low-dose municipal sewage sludge compost applications (0.5 t/ha). Sampling campaigns were done in 2018 near Újkígyós (SE Hungary) during which composite soil samples (0–30 cm and 30–60 cm) and groundwater samples were collected for assessing changes in the nutrient and heavy metal concentrations as a result of compost amendments’ use. Additionally, upper soil (0–50 cm) and subsoil (50–80 cm) were sampled for assessing biological parameters, considered to be aerobic and anaerobic soil layers, respectively. Soil samples were analyzed for the basic pedological parameters (pH, organic matter, carbonates and texture), nutrients (K 2 O, P 2 O 5 , N-forms and organic matter) and heavy metal concentrations following standard extraction procedures. The microbial properties were characterized by colony-forming units (CFUs) and enzyme activity measurements. The results of the nutrient analyses show significantly increased soil-bound K 2 O, P 2 O 5 and NO 2 − + NO 3 − contents linked to the sewage sludge treatments. However, neither the organic matter nor the heavy metal content varied significantly in the sludge-amended soil compared with a control site. The microbiological analyses revealed that the sewage sludge treatments tended to increase the aerobic CFUs, but not that of the anaerobic microbes. The average catalase enzyme activity in both the aerobic and anaerobic samples and the average dehydrogenase activity only in the aerobic layers showed a slight but not significant increase in the compost-amended soils. Overall, these results convincingly demonstrated that amending soils with low doses of municipal sewage sludge composts (lacking any industrial sources) can be a sustainable fertilizing practice taking advantage of their high N, P and K contents that are slowly converted to their bioavailable forms thus preventing their excessive leaching in the groundwater.

Abstract:Sewage sludge is a valuable source of elements such as phosphorus and nitrogen. At the same time, heavy metals, emerging organic compounds, micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, PCPs, microplastics), or some potentially dangerous bacteria can be present. In this study, the sewage sludge was aerobically treated by composting with other materials (co-composted), and the resulting substrate was tested for suitability of its use in agriculture. Closer attention was focused on the pharmaceuticals (non-steroidal antiphlogistics, sartanes, antiepileptics, caffeine, and nicotine metabolites) content and ecotoxicity of the resulting substrates in the individual phases of sludge co-composting. It has been verified that during co-composting there is a potential for reduction of the content of pharmaceutical in the substrates up to 90 %. The course of the temperature in the thermophilic phase is decisive. Growth and ecotoxicity experiments demonstrated that with a suitable co-composting procedure, the resulting stabilized matter is suitable as a substrate for use in plant production, and the risk of using sewage sludge on agricultural land is substantially reduced.

Abstract:Processing sewage sludge can be problematic due to its potential environmental toxicity. It may contain high concentrations of pharmaceuticals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, as well as pathogenic microorganisms. However, it is a good source of organic matter and rich in microbial communities and enzymatic activity. This study deals with composting and vermicomposting of pre-composted mixtures of two different kinds of sewage sludge blended with moulded pulp in an operating composting plant. Of the total number and concentration of pollutants detected in individual piles, a large percentage of them were reduced by the composting process. The composting 2 process resulted in the greatest reduction in contaminating substances--a total of 19 substances by 4.39-90.4%. Some pharmaceuticals accumulated in earthworm bodies during vermicomposting; a total of 11 substances were detected. Atorvastatin showed the highest percentage reduction in compost 2 (90.4%), vermicompost 1 (65.2%) and vermicompost 2 (97.3%). Both composting and vermicomposting appeared to be effective for removal of heavy metals. A higher content of microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) was found in composts than vermicomposts. There was a significant reduction in the content of pathogenic microorganisms in both processes, but the reduction in enterococci was not significant.
Effects of Two Sludge Application on Fractionation and Phytotoxicity of Zinc and Copper in Soil

Abstract:The potential harm of heavy metals is a primary concern in application of sludge to the agricultural land. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of two sludges on fractionation of Zn and Cu in soil and their phytotoxicity to pakchoi. The loamy soil was mixed with 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% (by weight) of digested sewage sludge (SS) and composted sludge (SC). The additions of the both sludges caused a significant raise in all fractions, resulting in that exchangeable (EXCH) and organic matter (OM) became predominance for Zn and organic bound Cu occupied the largest portion. There was more available amount for Zn and Cu in SS treatments than SC treatments. During the pot experiment, the concentration of Zn in EXCH, carbonate (CAR) and OM and Cu in EXCH and OM fractions decreased in all treatments, so their bioavailability reduced. Germination rate and plant biomass decreased when the addition rate was high and the best yield appeared in 20% mixtures at the harvest of pakchoi. The two sludges increased tissue contents of Zn and Cu especially in the SS treatments. Zn in pakchoi was not only in relationship to Delta EXCH and Delta CAR forms but also in Delta OM forms in the sludge-soil mixtures. Tissue content of Cu in pakchoi grown on SC-soils could not be predicted by Delta EXCH. These correlation rates between Zn and Cu accumulation in pakchoi and variation of different fractions increased with time, which might indicate that sludges represented stronger impacts on the plant in long-term land application.

Abstract:Based on the most recently published data, we definitively estimated that the annual global production of sewage sludge may rise from ~ 53 million tons dry solids currently to ~ 160 million tons if global wastewater were to be treated to a similar level as in the 27 European Union countries/UK. It is widely accepted that the agricultural application is a beneficial way to recycle the abundant organic matter and plant nutrients in sewage sludge. However, land application may need to be limited due to the presence of metals. This work presents a meticulous and systematic review of the sources, concentrations, partitioning, and speciation of metals in sewage sludge in order to determine the impacts of sludge application on metal behavior in soils. It identifies that industrial wastewater, domestic wastewater and urban runoff are main sources of metals in sludge. It shows conventional treatment processes generally result in the partitioning of over 70% of metals from wastewater into primary and secondary sludge. Typically, the order of metal concentrations in sewage sludge is Zn > Cu > Cr ≈ Pb ≈ Ni > Cd. The proportion of these metals that are easily mobilised is highest for Zn and Ni, followed by Cd and Cu, then Pb and Cr. Sludge application to land will lead to elevated metal concentrations, and potentially to short-term changes to the dominant metal species in soils. However, the speciation of sludge-associated metals will change over time due to interactions with plant roots and soil minerals and as organic matter is mineralised by rhizo-microbiome.

Toxic effects of digested, composted and thermally-dried sewage sludge on three plants

Abstract:In order to evaluate potential toxic effects of stabilized sewage sludge that are currently applied to agricultural soils, three types of municipal sewage sludge and one pig slurry were subjected to phytotoxicity assays using three plants (Brassica rapa, Lolium perenne and Trifolium pratense). Equivalent batches of aerobically and anaerobically-digested sludge (F) from two municipal wastewater treatment plants, were composted (C) or thermally dried (T). In addition, one anaerobically-digested and thermally-dried pig slurry (P) was tested. A seedling growth test was performed in accordance with the OECD Guideline 208A, using seed emergence and shoot length as endpoints to identify the inhibition of plants growing in increasing doses of sludge. A correlation analysis between EC50 and physico-chemical parameters or the pollutant burden of the biosolids was also calculated. In all tests, lower germination rates were observed for T. pratense than for L. perenne and B. rapa. A moderate stimulatory effect on shoot length at low doses was observed for the three plants. In these wastes, a strong positive correlation was found between higher values of EC50 (less toxicity) and the stability degree of their organic matter, and a negative correlation between EC50 and total N, hydrolysable N or NH4-N content. No correlations were found with heavy metal or organic pollutant content in those wastes. Results indicate that digested sludge, thermally-dried sludge and thermally-dried pig slurry have non-negligible short term phytotoxic effects, and confirm that composting is an effective sludge treatment for the reduction of phytotoxicity.

Abstract:Sewage sludge handling is becoming a concern in Europe due to its increasing amount and the presence of contaminants, such as heavy metals and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). Currently, over 70% of sludge in Europe is treated thermally by incineration or used as fertilizer in agriculture. New thermochemical methods are under development and are expected to be implemented in the near future. This paper considers the life cycle environmental impacts of the following five alternatives for sludge handling, taking into account the presence of heavy metals and PPCPs: i) agricultural application of anaerobically digested sludge; ii) agricultural application of composted sludge; iii) incineration; iv) pyrolysis; and v) wet air oxidation. The results suggest that anaerobic digestion with recovery of nutrients and electricity has the lowest environmental impacts in 11 out of 18 categories considered. For the mean to maximum resource recovery, composting is the worst alternative, followed by pyrolysis with lower recovery rates. Agricultural application of anaerobically digested sludge has the highest freshwater ecotoxicity due to heavy metals, unless their concentration is in the lowest range, as found in some European sewage sludge applied on land. Therefore, stricter control of heavy metals in the sludge is needed for this option to limit freshwater ecotoxicity to the levels comparable with the thermal processes. The results also indicate that PPCPs have a negligible contribution to freshwater ecotoxicity when compared to heavy metals in the anaerobically digested sludge. Since thermal processes are currently drawing attention due to their potential benefits, the findings of this work suggest that their adoption is environmentally beneficial only if high resource recovery rates can be achieved.

Abstract:<p>Sewage sludge contains various classes of organic contaminants, limiting its land application. Sludge composting can effectively remove some organic contaminants. This review summarizes recent researches on concentration changes and dissipation of different organic contaminants including persistent organic pollutants during sludge composting, and discusses their dissipation pathways and the current understanding on dissipation mechanism. Some organic contaminants like PAHs and phthalates were removed mainly through biodegradation or mineralization, and their dissipation percentages were higher than those of PCDD/Fs and PCBs. Nevertheless, some recalcitrant organic contaminants could be sequestrated in organic fractions of sludge mixtures, and their levels and ARG abundance even increased after sludge composting in some studies, posing potential risks for land application. This review demonstrated that microbial community and their corresponding degradation for organic contaminants were influenced by different contaminants, bulking agents, composting methods and processes. Further research perspectives on removing organic contaminants during sludge composting were highlighted.</p>

Abstract:Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are eliminated from wastewater on wastewater treatment plants, and can enter sludge treatment areas along with sludge that is often composted and subsequently used as fertilizer. The objective of this study was: i) to compare the concentrations of PPCPs before and after composting of sewage sludge (SS) that is important for producers of composts and policy makers, ii) to quantify an effect of composting process on decomposition of PPCPs, iii) to find out relationship between PPCPs, selected chemical properties and microorganisms. The experiment was conducted over a duration of four months with sewage sludge mixed with straw pellets (SPs) in various proportions. The concentrations of PPCPs in the input materials were measured before the composting began, and in the compost at the end of the trial. Of all 12 monitored PPCPs, telmisartan showed the highest concentrations (up to two orders of magnitude). Composting has a positive effect on the breakdown of caffeine, citalopram, diclofenac, mirtazapine, venlafaxine and partially sulfapyridine. Conversely, the decomposition of amitriptyline, carbamazepine, cetirizine, ibuprofen, telmisartan, and triclosan was not influenced by the composting process. All analyzed PPCPs had significant (p < 0.001) positive correlations with pH, electrical conductivity, total nitrogen, fungi and Gram-negative bacteria. However, a significant (p < 0.001) negative correlation was seen with PPCPs and total carbon, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, bacteria, actinobacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and total microbial biomass. Composting technology should be further investigated and optimized for its potential to reduce the concentration of PPCPs in sewage sludge.

Identification of Compounds that Selectively Stabilize Specific G-Quadruplex Structures by Using a Thioflavin T-Displacement Assay as a Tool.

Abstract:Small molecules are used in the G-quadruplex (G4) research field in vivo and in vitro, and there are increasing demands for ligands that selectively stabilize different G4 structures. Thioflavin T (ThT) emits an enhanced fluorescence signal when binding to G4 structures. Herein, we show that ThT can be competitively displaced by the binding of small molecules to G4 structures and develop a ThT-displacement high-throughput screening assay to find novel and selective G4-binding compounds. We screened approximately 28 000 compounds by using three different G4 structures and identified eight novel G4 binders. Analysis of the structural conformation and stability of the G4 structures in presence of these compounds demonstrated that the four compounds enhance the thermal stabilization of the structures without affecting their structural conformation. In addition, all four compounds also increased the G4-structure block of DNA synthesis by Taq DNA polymerase. Also, two of these compounds showed selectivity between certain Schizosaccharomyces pombe G4 structures, thus suggesting that these compounds or their analogues can be used as selective tools for G4 DNA studies.
Effect of Composting on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Removal in Sewage Sludge

Abstract:Changes in the concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) identified by the US Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants were investigated during the composting process of sewage sludge mixed with rapeseed marc (9:1, weight base). Results showed that total PAHs concentrations of the sludge sampled in different seasons had far exceeded the accepted Europe Union cut-off limits for land application. Phenanthrene, fluorene and dibenz(a, h) anthracene were dominant PAHs in the sludge, accounting for 62.8~69.6% of the total amount of the 16 PAHs. Composting appeared to be an effective method for the removal of PAHs in sewage sludge. After 50 days of composting, a significant reduction of concentration of the total PAHs was detected as compared with the initial concentration in composting material. The significant relationship between the biodegradation of organic matter and the losses of Σ16 PAHs during composting indicated that microbial degradation was the key process responsible for the efficient removal of PAHs from the sludge. Among all tested PAHs, fluorene was the most recalcitrant and became the primary residual PAH in the composted material. The lower removal rate of fluorene during composting was a limiting factor for the potential land application of the sludge. Further studies are needed to enhance the removal of fluorene in order to achieve a safe utilization of this sludge.

Abstract:SOME 40% of the sludge produced at inland sewage works in England and Wales is applied to agricultural land1. In addition to the plant nutrients and organic matter they provide, such sludges also contain various quantities of heavy metals2. In some cases, repeated and very heavy dressings of sludge have led to accumulations of harmful elements that are toxic to plants3. There has been concern about their possible accumulation in agricultural soils receiving sludge4 since, as Tyler5 suggested, microbial activity in soils is susceptible to enhanced levels of heavy metals. The state of soils receiving sludge is monitored by regular analyses6, and the Advisory Services of the Ministry of Agriculture (ADAS) have recommended a combined upper limit7 to the total load (pre-existing and applied) of Zn, Cu and Ni, above which crop plants may be affected. We have investigated whether the approved quantities of sludge have adverse effects on the microorganisms responsible, in aerobic conditions, for mineralising the organic carbon in the soil, and have shown that three contrasting sludges from the same works, when mixed with soil in amounts up to five times the recommended limit, had no adverse effect on carbon mineralisation.

Abstract:Sewage sludge production increases in Europe proportionally to the number of municipalities that put wastewater treatment plants into service. Recycling to soil is among the main sludge outlets, since amending with sludge meets requirements of efficient recycling of resources while providing organic matter for poor or degraded soils. As raw sludge contains substances potentially harmful for environmental and human health, it must be stabilized before application to the soil. We tested three kinds of anaerobically digested sludge, differing by the post-treatments they had undergone (dewatering, composting or thermal drying), for their effects on soil microbial activity, microarthropod density and biological soil quality quantified as QBS indicator. Our experimental treatments were set on plots located in a burnt Mediterranean forest and consisted of spreading sludge on the soil surface to achieve a dose of 6 Mg o.m.ha−1. Although amendment with any of the three kinds of sludge increased soil organic matter and nitrogen, thermally dried sludge caused a transitory increase of the soil microbial metabolic coefficient that we considered indicative of soil disturbance. One year after soil amendment, all sludge effects on the soil microbial activity had disappeared. When working with microarthropods’ density and biodiversity, no sludge improved soil biological quality, fresh digested sludge being the most detrimental, since it caused the decline of the most sensitive taxa (oribatid mites) and increased the density of soil forms resistant to disturbance and pollution (astigmatic mites and symphypleon collembolans). Sludge effects on soil microarthropods were still evident three years after soil amendment, which suggests that soil invertebrate diversity is less resilient to soil disturbance than global microbial metabolism.

Abstract:Land application of sewage sludge is increasingly used as an alternative to landfilling and incineration owing to a considerable content of carbon and essential plant nutrients in sewage sludge. However, the presence of chemical and biological contaminants in sewage sludge poses potential dangers; therefore, sewage sludge must be suitably treated before being applied to soils. The most common methods include anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, lime stabilization, incineration, and pyrolysis. These methods aim at stabilizing sewage sludge, to eliminate its potential environmental pollution and restore its agronomic value. To achieve best results on land, a comprehensive understanding of the transformation of organic matter, nutrients, and contaminants during these sewage-sludge treatments is essential; however, this information is still lacking. This review aims to fill this knowledge gap by presenting various approaches to treat sewage sludge, transformation processes of some major nutrients and pollutants during treatment, and potential impacts on soils. Despite these treatments, overtime there are still some potential risks of land application of treated sewage sludge. Potentially toxic substances remain the main concern regarding the reuse of treated sewage sludge on land. Therefore, further treatment may be applied, and long-term field studies are warranted, to prevent possible adverse effects of treated sewage sludge on the ecosystem and human health and enable its land application.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of the present work is to characterize the soil additive derived from sewage sludge as potentially economically acceptable material for agricultural production as well as for soil and environment protection. The soil additive consisting of sewage sludge obtained from the wastewater treatment plant Pannon-Víz Zrt. (Győr, Hungary) and agricultural byproducts represented by wastes from grain mill industry and crushed corn cobs was prepared using the low-capacity granulator equipment constructed by Energy Agency Public Nonprofit Ltd. (Hungary). The characterization of sewage sludge as primary composite and prepared soil additive includes the determination of physico-chemical parameters such as pH determined in suspension with distilled water, 0.01 mol/dm 3 CaCl 2 or 1 mol/dm 3 KCl solutions, pHzpc predicted by potentiometric titration and ProtoFit software, water holding capacity (WHC), cationexchange capacity (CEC) and total organic carbon (TOC). The elemental analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry revealed that sewage sludge as well as prepared soil additive contain significant amount of Zn and Cu as important microelements in plant nutrition. Also, it was found that prepared soil additive represents the considerable source of a significant proportion, strong bound and in this way gradually released microelements. Obtained results suggest on the application potential of prepared soil additive in agricultural production as well as in remediation and reclamation of contaminated or degraded soil.
A dual spiral antenna for Ultra-wideband capsule endoscope system

Abstract:In this paper, a dual spiral antenna for ultra-wideband capsule endoscope system is proposed. Since a capsule endoscope system which transmits real-time image data in the body should have ultra-wideband characteristic, an ultra-wideband antenna is suitable for this system. When an antenna is used as capsule endoscope system, a small sized antenna is required because capsule is small enough to be swallowed. For these two conditions, the proposed antenna has dual resonance structure which is composed of two different spiral elements and single feed wire connects these two elements. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 411~600 MHz (189 MHz) for VSWR<2 which means the fractional bandwidth of 37.8% and it has isotropic radiation pattern. The height of the proposed antenna is 7 mm and diameter is 10 mm. Because of ultra-wideband characteristic and small size, the proposed dual spiral antenna is suitable for ultra-wideband capsule endoscope system.
New insights into vermiremediation of sewage sludge: The effect of earthworms on micropollutants and vice versa

Abstract:Vermicomposting represents an environmentally friendly method for the treatment of various types of biowastes, including sewage sludge (SS), as documented in numerous studies. However, there are few papers providing insights into the mechanisms and toxicity effects involved in SS vermicomposting to present a comprehensive overview of the process. In this work, the vermiremediation of SS containing various micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, and per/polyfluoroalkyl substances, was studied. Two SSs originating from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTP1 and WWTP2) were mixed with a bulking agent, moistened straw, at ratios of 0, 25, 50, and 75% SS. Eisenia andrei earthworms were introduced into the mixtures, and after six weeks, the resulting materials were subjected to various types of chemical and toxicological analyses, including conventional assays (mortality, weight) as well as tissue- and cell-level assays, such as malondialdehyde production, cytotoxicity tests and gene expression assays. Through the vermiremediation process significant removal of diclofenac (90%), metoprolol (88%), telmisartan (62%), and triclosan (81%) was achieved. Although the concentrations of micropollutants were substantially different in the original SS samples, the micropollutants vermiaccumulated to a similar extent over the incubation period. The earthworms substantially eliminated the present bacterial populations, especially in the 75% SS treatments, in which the average declines were 90 and 79% for WWTP1 and WWTP2, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the vermiremediation of such a large group of micropollutants in real SS samples and provide a thorough evaluation of the effect of SS on earthworms at tissue and cellular level.
