Abstract:Tai Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China with annual cyanobacteria blooms. Microcystins produced by these blooms have serious health risks for populations surrounding the lake, especially for people living on Tai Lake, because they usually drink raw lake water after a simple alum treatment. This study presents data on the detection and identification of microcystins in waters used for daily life by people living on Tai Lake, during the cyanobacterial blooming in July 2007. The health risks from drinking these microcystin-polluted waters were also calculated. The main microcystins detected by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in the water samples collected from two parts of Tai Lake (Wuli Lake and Meiliang Bay) were MC-LR (4.33-12.27 mu g/L), MC-RR (8.36-16.91 mu g/L) and MC-YR (1.41-5.57 mu g/L). Risk assessment showed that the drinking water simply treated by alum was not safe. The lowest calculated hazards ratios in all water samples was 6.4, which indicated that the risk of microcystins exposure from drinking water was over six times higher than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) recommended by The World Health Organization (WHO). Further studies should be conducted to elucidate the relationships between the epidemiology of people living on Tai Lake and microcystins exposure from drinking water. Assessing Ecological Risk of Cyanotoxins Based on Interspecies Correlation Estimation and Species Sensitivity Distributions

Abstract:The risk of cyanotoxins to human health has been widely concerned. However, their effect on aquatic species sensitivity distribution was not well understood. This study aimed to assess the ecological risks of two typi￣cal cyanobacterial hepatotoxins (nodularins, cylindrospermopsin) and two typical cyanobacterial neurotoxins (ana￣toxin￣a, saxitoxins) by employing the interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) and species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) models. SSDs were constructed based on 71 available sets of acute toxicity data covering 64 aquatic organ￣isms exposure to cyanotoxins. The potentially affected fractions (PAF) under various concentrations and the hazard￣ous concentrations for 5% of the species (HC5 ) were calculated and compared among different aquatic species. Re￣sults show that the estimated HC5 values for nodularins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin￣a and saxitoxins were 74.96μg?L￣1, 205.39μg?L￣1, 194.39μg?L￣1and 0.3μg?L￣1, respectively, suggesting that the hazardous risk of species is assessed at higher and lower level for saxitoxins and cylindrospermopsin. The invertebrates exposure to cylindrosper￣mopsin and anatoxin￣a presented lower HC5 than that of the all aquatic organisms with 122.93μg?L￣1 and 95.19μg?L￣1 , respectively, which indicate that cylindrospermopsin and anatoxin￣a cause more damage to invertebrates than other species. The PAF of 10￣1000μg?L￣1 cylindrospermopsin and anatoxin￣a to invertebrates were higher than that of vertebrates, suggesting that invertebrates are more sensitive to cylindrospermopsin and anatoxin￣a than vertebrates.

Abstract:Mass populations of toxin-producing cyanobacteria commonly develop in fresh-, brackish- and marine waters and effective strategies for monitoring and managing cyanobacterial health risks are required to safeguard animal and human health. A multi-interdisciplinary study, including two UK freshwaters with a history of toxic cyanobacterial blooms, was undertaken to explore different approaches for the identification, monitoring and management of potentially-toxic cyanobacteria and their associated risks. The results demonstrate that (i) cyanobacterial bloom occurrence can be predicted at a local- and national-scale using process-based and statistical models; (ii) cyanobacterial concentration and distribution in waterbodies can be monitored using remote sensing, but minimum detection limits need to be evaluated; (iii) cyanotoxins may be transferred to spray-irrigated root crops; and (iv) attitudes and perceptions towards risks influence the public's preferences and willingness-to-pay for cyanobacterial health risk reductions in recreational waters.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Cyanobacterial blooms pose environmental and health risks due to their production of toxic secondary metabolites. While current methods for assessing these risks have focused primarily on bloom frequency and intensity, the lack of comprehensive and comparable data on cyanotoxins makes it challenging to rigorously evaluate these health risks. In this study, we examined 750 metagenomic data sets collected from 103 lakes worldwide. Our analysis unveiled the diverse distributions of cyanobacterial communities and the genes responsible for cyanotoxin production across the globe. Our approach involved the integration of cyanobacterial biomass, the biosynthetic potential of cyanotoxin, and the potential effects of these toxins to establish potential cyanobacterial health risks. Our findings revealed that nearly half of the lakes assessed posed medium to high health risks associated with cyanobacteria. The regions of greatest concern were East Asia and South Asia, particularly in developing countries experiencing rapid industrialization and urbanization. Using machine learning techniques, we mapped potential cyanobacterial health risks in lakes worldwide. The model results revealed a positive correlation between potential cyanobacterial health risks and factors such as temperature, N 2 O emissions, and the human influence index. These findings underscore the influence of these variables on the proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms and associated risks. By introducing a novel quantitative method for monitoring potential cyanobacterial health risks on a global scale, our study contributes to the assessment and management of one of the most pressing threats to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. IMPORTANCE Our research introduces a novel and comprehensive approach to potential cyanobacterial health risk assessment, offering insights into risk from a toxicity perspective. The distinct geographical variations in cyanobacterial communities coupled with the intricate interplay of environmental factors underscore the complexity of managing cyanobacterial blooms at a global scale. Our systematic and targeted cyanobacterial surveillance enables a worldwide assessment of cyanobacteria-based potential health risks, providing an early warning system.

Abstract:It is clear from the literature that numerous methods are available for most cyanotoxins, although many publications on monitoring data indicate that the favored approach is the use proven, robust methods for individual toxins. The most effective approach is the utilization of a robust rapid screen, where positive samples are followed up by qualitative and quantitative analysis to provide the essential decision making data needed for successful management strategies (Fig. 2). Currently, rapid screens are available for microcystins, saxitoxins and anatoxin-a(s), whilst optimisation and validation is needed, many publications report good correlation with the mouse bioassay and HPLC. There is an urgent need for rapid, simple, and inexpensive assays for cylindrospermopsins, anatoxin-a and BMAA. Although methods exist for analysis of BMAA, the fact that a recent study showed 95% of cyanobacteria producing this, some at levels > 6,000 microg g(-1) dry wt, is of concern and rapid screening followed by robust analysis needed. An ideal approach would be a single method capable of extracting and detecting all cyanotoxins. Several publications describe such approaches using LC-MS, but as expected from a group of compounds with diverse chemistry, there are obvious limitations in recoveries during sample processing, chromatographic performance and sensitivity (Dahlmann et al. 2003, Dell'Aversano et al. 2004, Pietsch et al. 2001). Selection of methods must be based on the application requirements, equipment available and cost. For many organisations it may be more cost effective to out-source the occasional analysis. However, as the incidence of blooms appears to be increasing, the need for more rigorous monitoring is needed, sensible investment is needed to meet recommended guidelines. Most of the methods discussed in this paper are suitable for achieving this goal, although clean-up and concentration is usually necessary for physicochemical methods.

Abstract:Public concern over cyanobacterial blooms has increased due to their higher frequency of occurrence and their potential ecological and health impacts. Detection of microcystin (MC) producers (MCPs) using qPCR and RT-qPCR allows for the rapid identification of blooms by combining specificity and sensitivity with a relatively high throughput capability. Investigation of MCP population composition (correlation, dominance), toxin gene expression, and relationship to MC concentration was conducted using a panel of qPCR assays targeting mcyA, E and G on weekly and daily water samples collected from an Ohio inland reservoir lake. Further, these data were used to develop early warning thresholds for prediction of MC concentrations exceeding the US EPA Health Advisory cutoff value (>0.3 μg L-1) using receiver operating characteristic curves and tobit regression. MCP Microcystis genomic copy number made up approximately 35% of the total Microcystis spp. and was the dominant toxic subpopulation of MCPs. The expressed MCPs were 0.2% of the extant genomic copy numbers, while toxic Microcystis had higher expressed proportion (0.5%) than that of toxic Planktothrix (0.04%). Microcystis toxin genes increased in June and July but decreased in August and September along with similar trends of cell replication. Quantities of both RT-qPCR and qPCR followed the same trend and were highly correlated with MC-ADDA, while RT-qPCR not only reflected the active toxin genes or toxic species, but also indicated the beginning and ending of toxin production. A one-week early warning of MC exceedance over the EPA Health Advisory was based on signaling of qPCR and RT-qPCR using receiver operating characteristic curves. This study illustrates the potential use of qPCR or RT-qPCR as an early warning system of extant and MC producing potentials during a toxic algal bloom, with predictive powers of 50%-60% and 30%-40% (p < 0.001), respectively, and false positive rates of about 70% for both LC-MS/MS or ELISA.

Abstract:An existing volunteer monitoring network in the state of Michigan was exploited to conduct a statewide survey of the cyanobacterial toxin, microcystin, and to test hypotheses about the interactive influences of eutrophication and dreissenid mussel invasion. A total of 77 lakes were sampled by citizen volunteers for microcystin, total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a. Microcystin was measured in depth-integrated samples collected from the euphotic zone as well as in surface-water samples collected along the shoreline. Average microcystin in samples collected by volunteers was not different from samples collected side-by-side by professionals. Euphotic-zone microcystin was positively related to TP in lakes without dreissenids (uninvaded) but not in lakes with dreissenids (invaded). Regression-tree analysis indicated that euphotic-zone microcystin was eight times higher in the presence of dreissenids for lakes with TP between 5 and 10microgL(-1). In contrast, euphotic-zone microcystin was almost identical in invaded and uninvaded lakes with TP between 10 and 26microgL(-1). Across all lakes, microcystin concentrations at the surface were on average more than double, and in some cases an order-of-magnitude greater than, concentrations in the euphotic-zone. Given these results, it seems prudent to include dreissenid invasion status in forecasting models for microcystin, and to include shoreline sampling in monitoring programs aimed at assessing recreational exposure to cyanobacterial toxins.

Abstract:Algal blooms can threaten human health if cyanotoxins such as microcystin are produced by cyanobacteria. Regularly monitoring microcystin concentrations in recreational waters to inform management action is a tool for protecting public health; however, monitoring cyanotoxins is resource- and time-intensive. Statistical models that identify waterbodies likely to produce microcystin can help guide monitoring efforts, but variability in bloom severity and cyanotoxin production among lakes and years makes prediction challenging. We evaluated the skill of a statistical classification model developed from water quality surveys in one season with low temporal replication but broad spatial coverage to predict if microcystin is likely to be detected in a lake in subsequent years. We used summertime monitoring data from 128 lakes in Iowa (USA) sampled between 2017-2021 to build and evaluate a predictive model of microcystin detection as a function of lake physical and chemical attributes, watershed characteristics, zooplankton abundance, and weather. The model built from 2017 data identified pH, total nutrient concentrations, and ecogeographic variables as the best predictors of microcystin detection in this population of lakes. We then applied the 2017 classification model to data collected in subsequent years and found that model skill declined but remained effective at predicting microcystin detection (area under the curve, AUC ≥ 0.7). We assessed if classification skill could be improved by assimilating the previous years' monitoring data into the model, but model skill was only minimally enhanced. Overall, the classification model remained reliable under varying climatic conditions. Finally, we tested if early season observations could be combined with a trained model to provide early warning for late summer microcystin detection, but model skill was low in all years and below the AUC threshold for two years. The results of these modeling exercises support the application of correlative analyses built on single-season sampling data to monitoring decision-making, but similar investigations are needed in other regions to build further evidence for this approach in management application.

Abstract:Two commonly used methods for cyanotoxin analysis are enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and discrepancies are commonly observed between the two methods due to various factors including the ELISA antibody cross-reacting to different cyanotoxin congeners. However, reliable cyanotoxin monitoring methods and accurate interpretation of results are needed for water utilities to guide recreational water planning and drinking water treatment operations. In this study, we explored an innovative "effective concentration-equivalent concentration" (EC-EQ) approach to improve the interpretation of ELISA results and the comparison to LC-MS/MS results. The precision of ELISA results was first improved by reporting the sample ECs and EQs derived from their ELISA dose curves. Concentrations of each cyanotoxin as measured by LC-MS/MS were then combined with their respective ELISA cross-reactivities to calculate their theoretical ELISA responses. Finally, instead of comparing the results from the two methods directly, the equivalent concentration based on one single reference cyanotoxin was used for reporting and comparison. This integrated mass balance-based approach provides a more reliable interpretation of results by considering the reactivity differences between toxins as well as their mixture effects. This approach has been successfully applied to microcystin (one main group of cyanotoxins) standard mixtures and cyanobacterial bloom samples to interpret and compare their ELISA and LC-MS/MS detection results. The study provides guidance to utilities on how to obtain more accurate cyanotoxin monitoring results and better understand the discrepancy between the two methods.
A Bayesian risk assessment framework for microcystin violations of drinking water and recreational standards in the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario, Canada

Abstract:Freshwater ecosystems can experience harmful algal blooms, which negatively impact recreational uses, aesthetics, taste, and odor in drinking water. Cyanobacterial toxins can have dire repercussions on aquatic wildlife and human health, and the most ubiquitous worldwide are the hepatotoxic compounds known as microcystins. The factors that influence the occurrence and magnitude of cyanobacteria blooms and toxin production vary in space and time and remain poorly understood. It is within this context that we present a suite of statistical models, parameterized with Bayesian inference techniques, to link the retrospective analysis of important environmental factors with the probability of exceedance of threshold microcystin levels. Our modelling framework is applied to the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario, Canada; a system with a long history of eutrophication problems. Collectively, 16.1% of the samples of the system collected during the study period (2003-2016) exceeded the drinking water guideline of 1.5 μgL-1, while approximately 3% of recorded values exceeded the recommended recreational threshold of 20 μgL-1. Using a segmented regression model with a stochastic breakpoint of microcystin concentrations estimated at 0.54 μg L-1, we demonstrate that the environmental conditions associated with increased probability of exceedance of the drinking water standard are chlorophyll a concentration ≥7 μg L-1, water temperature ≥20 °C, ammonium concentration ≤40 μgL-1, total phosphorus concentration ≥25 μg L-1, and wind speed ≤37 km h-1. Considering the multitude of factors that can influence the ambient levels of toxins, our study argues that the adoption of probabilistic water quality criteria offers a pragmatic approach to accommodate the associated uncertainty by permitting a realistic frequency of violations. In this context, we present a framework to evaluate the confidence of compliance with probabilistic standards that stipulate less than 10% violations of microcystin threshold ambient levels.

Age-associated differences in cognitive performance in older patients with schizophrenia: a comparison with healthy older adults.

Abstract:BACKGROUND There are varying results regarding the conjoint influence of aging and schizophrenia on cognitive abilities. Previous studies have been limited by restricted age ranges among schizophrenia and psychiatrically healthy control samples as well as small numbers of control participants. OBJECTIVE To quantify the association between age and cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia and psychiatrically healthy older adult controls and to determine if age-associated changes in cognitive performance were different in the two groups. METHODS People with schizophrenia (n = 226) and psychiatrically healthy individuals (n = 834) ranging in age from 40 to older than 80 years were compared on a battery of neuropsychological tests. To directly compare the impact of age on cognitive performance, age was also regressed on performance in the two samples. RESULTS The performance of psychiatrically healthy adults age 70 and older was superior to the performance of the youngest patients with schizophrenia (age 40-49) years on measures of working and episodic memory, executive function, and psychomotor speed. Regression analyses indicated that age effects on cognition were significantly greater for schizophrenia patients on measures of verbal learning and speed of processing. Within both the schizophrenia group, and psychiatrically healthy adults, the greatest age-related differences in performance seemed to occur for individuals aged more than 70 years. CONCLUSION In this cross-sectional study, the present findings underscore the fact that schizophrenia is associated with cognitive impairment across all ages and that older schizophrenia patients experience relatively greater age associated differences in cognitive functioning than healthy individuals. These findings have wide-ranging implications regarding the ability of older patients with schizophrenia to function independently and for the development of treatment strategies.

Abstract:The Drinking Water Directive (EU) 2020/2184 includes the parameter microcystin LR, a cyanotoxin, which drinking water producers need to analyze if the water source has potential for cyanobacterial blooms. In light of the increasing occurrences of cyanobacterial blooms worldwide and given that more than 50 percent of the drinking water in Sweden is produced from surface water, both fresh and brackish, the need for improved knowledge about cyanotoxin occurrence and cyanobacterial diversity has increased. In this study, a total of 98 cyanobacterial blooms were sampled in 2016–2017 and identified based on their toxin production and taxonomical compositions. The surface water samples from freshwater lakes throughout Sweden including brackish water from eight east coast locations along the Baltic Sea were analyzed for their toxin content with LC-MS/MS and taxonomic composition with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Both the extracellular and the total toxin content were analyzed. Microcystin's prevalence was highest with presence in 82% of blooms, of which as a free toxin in 39% of blooms. Saxitoxins were found in 36% of blooms in which the congener decarbamoylsaxitoxin (dcSTX) was detected for the first time in Swedish surface waters at four sampling sites. Anatoxins were most rarely detected, followed by cylindrospermopsin, which were found in 6% and 10% of samples, respectively. As expected, nodularin was detected in samples collected from the Baltic Sea only. The cyanobacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with the highest abundance and prevalence could be annotated to Aphanizomenon NIES-81 and the second most profuse cyanobacterial taxon to Microcystis PCC 7914. In addition, two correlations were found, one between Aphanizomenon NIES-81 and saxitoxins and another between Microcystis PCC 7914 and microcystins. This study is of value to drinking water management and scientists involved in recognizing and controlling toxic cyanobacteria blooms.

State of knowledge on early warning tools for cyanobacteria detection

Abstract:The potential for cyanobacterial blooms to impact recreational and drinking water source quality is a growing concern. Numerous monitoring tools have been developed that can alert stakeholders to the onset of cyanobacterial blooms to initiate mitigation efforts for waters used for recreation or drinking water supply. Early warning monitoring systems need to consider multiple aspects of a cyanobacterial bloom: whether a bloom is occurring in the source water, whether it might be transported to drinking water intakes, whether toxin or taste and odor compound producers are present and what proportion of the cells in a bloom they comprise, and whether cells are entering a utility at concentrations above threshold levels. No single monitoring tool can provide all this information, so multi-barrier approaches are needed. Reviews of monitoring tools and their variations are available, but they are generally limited to one type of tool. Instead, a review and comparison of all the available tools is needed to inform stakeholders of them and their relative advantages and limitations. Therefore, this review covers conventional tools including microscopic enumeration, pigment extraction, qPCR, probes, and remote sensing as well as emerging techniques including next-generation sequencing, photonic systems, biosensors, drones, and applications of machine learning and discusses them primarily from a practical and operational standpoint. Moreover, a three-tier framework is proposed for designing comprehensive early warning systems that groups monitoring tools by their analytical targets: biological activity or algal biomass, cyanobacteria or cyanobacteria-related genes, and cyanobacterial metabolites. First tier tools are generally simple and inexpensive to use, including turbidity, optical density, visual inspection, drones, chlorophyll a, and adenosine triphosphate. Changes in water quality conditions detected using a first tier tool triggers the use of a second tier tools for identification and quantification of cyanobacteria by microscopy, phycocyanin, biosensors, hyperspectral remote sensing, or next-generation sequencing. If potentially harmful concentrations of cyanobacteria are confirmed, third tier tools are deployed for quantifying concentrations of cyanotoxins and taste and odor compounds or the genes that encode for them using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, mass spectrometry, qPCR, or other analytical methods. This framework is designed to minimize the time and cost associated with cyanobacteria monitoring without compromising the ability of stakeholders to detect the onset of a bloom.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) threaten public health and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. In this study, our main goal was to explore the dynamics of cyanobacterial blooms and how microcystins (MCs) move from the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir to the nearby farms. We used Landsat imagery, molecular analysis, collecting and analyzing physicochemical data, and assessing toxins using HPLC. Our investigation identified two cyanobacterial species responsible for the blooms: Microcystis sp. and Synechococcus sp. Our Microcystis strain produced three MC variants (MC-RR, MC-YR, and MC-LR), with MC-RR exhibiting the highest concentrations in dissolved and intracellular toxins. In contrast, our Synechococcus strain did not produce any detectable toxins. To validate our Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) results, we utilized limnological data, including algal cell counts, and quantified MCs in freeze-dried Microcystis bloom samples collected from the reservoir. Our study revealed patterns and trends in cyanobacterial proliferation in the reservoir over 30 years and presented a historical map of the area of cyanobacterial infestation using the NDVI method. The study found that MC-LR accumulates near the water surface due to the buoyancy of Microcystis. The maximum concentration of MC-LR in the reservoir water was 160 µg L-1. In contrast, 4 km downstream of the reservoir, the concentration decreased by a factor of 5.39 to 29.63 µgL-1, indicating a decrease in MC-LR concentration with increasing distance from the bloom source. Similarly, the MC-YR concentration decreased by a factor of 2.98 for the same distance. Interestingly, the MC distribution varied with depth, with MC-LR dominating at the water surface and MC-YR at the reservoir outlet at a water depth of 10 m. Our findings highlight the impact of nutrient concentrations, environmental factors, and transfer processes on bloom dynamics and MC distribution. We emphasize the need for effective management strategies to minimize toxin transfer and ensure public health and safety.
Application of real-time PCR in the assessment of the toxic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii abundance and toxicological potential

Abstract:Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms that pose a serious threat to aquatic environments because they are able to form blooms under eutrophic conditions and produce toxins. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a planktonic heterocystous filamentous cyanobacterium initially assigned to the tropics but currently being found in more temperate regions such as Portugal, the southernmost record for this species in Europe. Cylindrospermopsin originally isolated from C. raciborskii is a cytotoxic alkaloid that affects the liver, kidney, and other organs. It has a great environmental impact associated with cattle mortality and human morbidity. Aiming in monitoring this cyanobacterium and its related toxin, a shallow pond located in the littoral center of Portugal, Vela Lake, used for agriculture and recreational purposes was monitored for a 2-year period. To accomplish this, we used the real-time PCR methodology in field samples to quantify the variation of specific genetic markers with primers previously described characterizing total cyanobacteria (16S rRNA), C. raciborskii (rpoC1), and cylindrospermopsin synthetase gene (pks). The results report the high abundance of both cyanobacteria and C. raciborskii in Vela Lake, with C. raciborskii representing 0.4% to 58% of the total cyanobacteria population. Cylindrospermopsin synthetase gene was detected in one of the samples. We believe that with the approach developed in this study, it will be possible to monitor C. raciborskii population dynamics and seasonal variation, as well as the potential toxin production in other aquatic environments.

Abstract:Summary The existence of ventricular augmentor fibers in the cervical vago-sympathetic trunk of the dog has been established by electrical stimulation after atropine. These fibers are distributed directly to both right and left ventricles, although preliminary evidence indicates disproportionate supply to the right ventricle. Augmentation in atrial systole during vagal stimulation after atropine also indicates significant innervation of atrial musculature, but these influences may often be subordinate to alterations in mean atrial pressure. Cardioaccel-erator responses may or may not accompany the augmentor changes in intraventricular pressure, and are usually more characteristic of right vagal stimulation.

Abstract:This study addresses the increasing concern regarding cyanotoxin contamination of water bodies, highlighting the diversity of these toxins and their potential health implications. Cyanobacteria, which are prevalent in aquatic environments, produce toxic metabolites, raising concerns regarding human exposure and associated health risks, including a potential increase in cancer risk. Although existing research has primarily focused on well-known cyanotoxins, recent technological advancements have revealed numerous unknown cyanotoxins, necessitating a comprehensive assessment of multiple toxin categories. To enhance the cyanotoxin databases, we optimized the CyanoMetDB cyanobacterial secondary metabolites database by incorporating secondary fragmentation patterns using the Mass Frontier fragmentation data prediction software. Water samples from diverse locations in Shanghai were analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Subsequently, the toxicity of cyanobacterial metabolites in the water samples was examined through acute toxicity assays using the crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. After 24 h of exposure, the semi-lethal concentrations (LC50) of the water samples ranged from 0.31 mg L-1 to 1.78 mg L-1 (MC-LR equivalent concentration). Our findings revealed a critical correlation between the overall concentration of cyanobacterial metabolites and toxicity. The robust framework and insights of this study underscore the need for an inclusive approach to water quality management, emphasizing continuous efforts to refine detection methods and comprehend the broader ecological impact of cyanobacterial blooms on aquatic ecosystems.
