Abstract:There is an increasing interest in understanding ambient bioaerosols due to their roles both in health and in climate. Here, we deployed an Ultraviolet Aerodynamic Particle Sizer to monitor viable (fluorescent) bioaerosol concentration levels at city centers (highly polluted) and their corresponding suburbs (near pristine) (total 40 locations) in 11 provinces featuring different climate zones in China between July 16 and 28, 2013. The concentration levels of viable bioaerosol particles (BioPM) of >0.5 μm were measured, and corresponding percentages of BioPM% (biological fraction of total PM) and BioPM2.5% (biological fraction of PM2.5) in particulate matter (PM) and BioPM, respectively, were determined. For some key cities, indoor viable bioaerosol levels were also obtained. In addition, bacterial structures of the air samples collected across these monitoring locations were studied using pyrosequencing. BioPM concentration levels ranged from 2.1 × 104 to 2.4 × 105/m3 for city centers [BioPM% = 6.4% (±6.3%)] and 0.5 × 104 to 4.7 × 105/m3 for suburbs [BioPM% = 10% (±8.7%)]. Distinctive bioaerosol size distribution patterns were observed for different climate zones, e.g., some had fluorescence peaks at 3 μm, while the majority had peaks at 1 μm. Ambient bacterial aerosol community structures were also found different for different geophysical locations. Results suggest that there was a poor overall relationship between PM and BioPM across 40 monitoring locations (R2 = 0.081, two-tailed P value = 0.07435). Generally, city centers had higher PM concentrations than suburbs, but not BioPM and BioPM%. Indoor bioaerosol levels were found at least tenfold higher than those corresponding outdoors. Bacillus was observed to dominate the bacterial aerosol community in the air sample.

Abstract:Exposure to bioaerosols has been associated with the occurrence of a variety of health impacts, including infectious illnesses, acute toxic effects, allergies, and cancer. This study aimed at evaluating airborne bacteria and fungi populations at different indoor and outdoor sites on a college campus in Bengaluru, India. Bioaerosol samples were collected using a two-stage Andersen air sampler; and isolates were identified using standard procedures. Six air samples and meteorological data were collected in March and April 2014 to examine the effects of temperature and relative humidity on bioaerosol concentration using linear regression modeling. Among all sites, the canteen showed the highest bioaerosol levels both indoors and outdoors. Specific bacterial identification was not possible, but gram staining and microscopic analysis helped to identify gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The most prevalent fungal species in the samples were Cladosporium, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Fusarium, Mucor, and Alternaria. Due to the impact of weather conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity, the bioaerosol concentration varied greatly at each site according to the regression model. The indoor bioaerosol concentrations at all sites exceeded the values established by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (< 250 CFU/m3 for total fungi and < 500 CFU/m3 for total bacteria). Higher concentrations of bioaerosols may be attributed to the transportation of microbes from the ground surface to suspended particles, the release of microbes from the respiratory tract, higher rate of shredding of human skin cells, and many other factors.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance, a significant public health hazard, is predicted to cause 10 million deaths worldwide by 2050. The study aimed to identify culturable bioaerosols in the indoor air of dental units in Lahore and assess their antibiotic resistance. Air samples were collected from 10 dental unit locations at different distances, with average concentrations of fungi and bacteria falling within intermediate ranges, per the Global Index of Microbial Contamination (GIMC/m3) index. The study found higher antibiotic-resistant strains in hospital dental units, particularly during winter. The most vigorous strain, S.aureus-NAJIH18, exhibited 70% resistance to ceftazidime. The research highlights the importance of quantifying microbial pollutants for evaluating their source and complexity. It suggests proactive mitigation techniques, such as focused cleaning and air filtration, to improve indoor air quality can mitigate the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains. These insights offer hope in combating the growing public health threat of antibiotic resistance.
Abundance and health risk of bioaerosols in the coastal areas of Qingdao, China

Abstract:Bioaerosols can be spread through coughing, sneezing, respiratory droplets and aerosol particles, and public awareness of the health risks of bioaerosols has increased. Based on bioaerosol culturable microbe concentration data collected from March–December in 2015, 2018 and 2019, the health risks of bioaerosols were assessed by air quality level, month, population, and particle size using an average daily dose rate model. The concentration of culturable microorganisms is related to the air quality index (AQI). Under AQI values ranging from 51–100, the concentration of culturable microorganisms was the highest, while the concentration of culturable microorganisms was the lowest for AQI values ranging from 101–150. The health risk in June and July 2015 was the highest, the change trends in 2018 and 2019 were similar, the health risk was the highest in October, and the health risk of bioaerosols along the inhalation route was 10 3 –10 4 times that along the exposure route. The health risk of bioaerosols was generally higher in summer and autumn than in spring and winter over the three-year period. The health risk for different categories of individuals indicated the same trend over the 3-year period, with the health risk for adults exceeding that for children and the health risk for men exceeding that for women. The health risk of bioaerosols was high under particle sizes ranging from 1.10–4.70 μm. The study results could provide data support for the analysis of bioaerosol-related health risks and offer a reference for the prevention and control of urban microbial diseases.

Abstract:In January 2014, severe haze episodes which sweep across Chinese cities have attracted public concern and interest at home and abroad. In addition to the physicochemical properties of air pollutants, bacteria are thought to be responsible for the spread of respiratory diseases and various allergies. We attempted the bacterial characterization of submicron particles (PM0.18-0.32, PM0.32-0.56, and PM0.56-1) under severe haze episodes using high-throughput sequencing and real-time quantitative PCR detecting system based on 21 samples collected from January to March 2014 at Ji'nan, China. The high bacterial concentration in PM0.32-0.56 (7314cells m-3), PM0.18-0.32 (7212cells m-3), and PM0.56-1 (6982cells m-3) showed significant negative correlations with SO2, NO2, and O3. Under sufficient sequencing depth, 37 phyla, 71 classes, 137 orders, 236 families, and 378 genera were classified, and the bacterial community structure varied significantly in different size fractions. For example, Holophagaceae (Acidobacteria) in PM0.32-0.56 showed 6-fold higher abundance than that in PM0.18-0.32. Moreover, functional categories and bacterial species (Lactococcus piscium, Pseudomonas fragi, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Pseudomonas cichorii) that may potentially be responsible for infections and allergies were also discovered. Source track analysis showed that the ambient bacteria mainly originated from soils, leaf surfaces, and feces. Our results highlighted the importance of airborne microbial communities by understanding the concentration, structure, ecological and health effects, especially those in submicron particles during haze episodes.

Abstract:The study of bioaerosol dispersion in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has received considerable attention. This study aimed to investigate the seasonal changes and spatial distributions of airborne bacteria around different parts of Ahvaz WWTP, the capital city of Khuzestan Province, Iran, over 4 months in the cold and warm seasons. Samples were collected from 2 and 10-m intervals of grit chamber (GCh), primary sludge dewatering basin (PSDB), aeration tank (AT), as well as 60-m upstream (US) and downstream (DS) of the WWTP. Further, bacteria in the indoor air of administrative building (AB) of WWTP were investigated. Bioaerosols were collected by passive sampling method. The total bacteria count was 105.3 ± 98.5 CFU/plate/h. The dominant bacteria stood 2 m away from the AT with an average 244.2 ± 73.1 CFU/plate/h in the warm season while they were the lowest with an average 43 ± 11.4 CFU/plate/h in the 10-m distance of the GCh in the cold season. According to the sequencing results, the dominant bacterial species included Bacillus pumilus (26.7%), Staphylococcus arlettae (23.2%), Kocuria turfanensis (13.6%) and Alicycliphilus (9.2%), respectively. There was a positive relationship between the release of bacteria, temperature and wind speed. However, there was a significant negative correlation between total bacteria concentration and humidity. There are accumulative perils to WWTP workers and neighbors exposed by persistent exposure to airborne bacteria. Therefore, AT should be paid more attention as a dominant source of airborne bacteria emissions, especially in the warm season.

Abstract:Bioaerosol particles in the atmosphere were collected from the coastal region of Qingdao from Jul. 2009 to Jun. 2010. The concentrations of microorganisms (including culturable, nonculturable, terrestrial and marine microorganisms) were measured. Average concentrations of airborne terrestrial bacteria, marine bacteria, terrestrial fungi, marine fungi and total bioaerosol were in the ranges of 33–664CFU/m3, 63–815CFU/m3, 2–777CFU/m3, 66–1128CFU/m3 and 85,015–166,094Cells/m3, respectively. The nonculturable microbes accounted for 99.13% of the total microbes. In addition, there were more culturable marine microbes than culturable terrestrial microbes, and more airborne fungi than bacteria. The concentration of airborne bacteria showed a skewed distribution pattern, while unimodal size distributions were observed for the concentrations of fungi and total microbes. The airborne microbes mainly existed in >2.1μm coarse particles. Pearson correlation analysis between the concentrations and meteorological parameters showed that the meteorological parameters had different effects on different kinds of microbes. Sandstorms increased the concentrations of both culturable microbes and total microbes in the bioaerosol.

Abstract:Exposure of microbial agents in the air of indoor dwellings is associated with effects on respiratory and general health. The current study was conducted in the urban area of Delhi Metropolis for the seasonal quantitative assessment of viable microbial indoor air quality. Bioaerosol measurement was conducted by using Anderson six stage impactor with cut-off diameters of 7.0, 4.7, 3.3, 2.1, 1.1, and 0.65 µm) throughout the all the seasons (April 2019 to March 2020). Meteorological parameters such as temperature and relative humidity were measured to check their effect on microbial survival. Air quality index data of the sampling area were recorded by DPCC air quality monitoring system, Ashok Vihar, Delhi. The highest (1654 ± 876.87 CFU/m3) and lowest (738 ± 443.59 CFU/m3) mean bacterial concentration in houses was recorded in August and December, respectively. Similarly, the highest fungal concentration (1275 ± 645.22 CFU/m3) was found in August and the lowest in (776 ± 462.46 CFU/m3) in January. Bacterial respirable fraction shows an irregular pattern in different seasons. In the case of fungi, the respirable fraction of 2.1 and 1.1 contributes more than 60% of total culturable bioaerosols in all seasons. Bacterial genera including Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, and Streptobacillus were most dominant, and Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Alternaria were the most dominant fungal genera observed indoors. The results of this study suggest that higher respirable fungal fraction might penetrate deeper into the lungs and cause various health effects. A higher concentration of bioaerosols in outdoor areas than indoor shows that the source of indoor bioaerosols is outdoor air.

Abstract:Accurate quantification of the airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is critically important to assess their health risks. However, the currently widely used high-volume filter sampler (HVFS) often causes the desiccation of the sample, interfering with subsequent bacterial culture. To overcome this limitation, a high-volume tandem liquid impinging sampler (HVTLIS) was developed and optimized to investigate the airborne bacterial microbiomes and antibiotic resistomes under different weathers in Tianjin, China. Results revealed that HVTLIS can capture significantly more diverse culturable bacteria, ARB, and ARGs than HVFS. Compared with fine and hazy weathers, dusty weather had significantly more diverse and abundant airborne bacteria, ARGs, and human opportunistic pathogens with the resistance to last-resort antibiotics of carbapenems and polymyxin B, implicating a potential human health threat of dusty bioaerosols. Intriguingly, we represented the first report of Saccharibacteria predominance in the bioaerosol, demonstrating that the potential advantage of HVTLIS in collecting airborne microbes.

Abstract:Scientific research on the concentration and size distribution of bioaerosols in diverse environmental conditions is recently being prioritized. Exposure to bioaerosols, especially through inhalation, is linked to many severe health complications. The inhalation of the bioaerosols is directly linked with the size as well as the nature of the bioaerosols. However, information related to the prevalence of bioaerosols is limited in India, constituting the basis for investigating variations in bacterial and fungal bioaerosol concentrations at various indoor sites. Several observational campaigns were initiated within diverse indoor sites, including cowshed, poultry, canteen, library, auditorium, laboratory, and hospital, using a six-stage viable impactor. Bacterial bioaerosols were more prevalent for size > 7.0 μm and between 1.1 and 2.1 μm. In contrast, fungal concentration peaked in the size range of 1.1 to 3.3 μm. At all the sites, the concentration of bacterial bioaerosols exceeded fungal bioaerosols (2 to 12 times), while such variation was exceptionally high in the poultry firm (70 times higher). No significant correlation was noted between bacterial and fungal bioaerosol concentration and environmental factors. The diversity of bacteria and fungi bioaerosols was found to be different as it varied from site to site. However, species like Acinetobacter and Bacillus sp. in bacteria and Penicillium , Aspergillus , and Cladosporium in fungi were most prevalent. Some of the bioaerosols found in these sites are pathogenic in nature and may cause severe health issues (if found in significant amount). The predominance of bioaerosols is mostly within the breathable range (< 3.3 μm) in diverse microenvironments.

Bacterial diversity and the antimicrobial resistome in the southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Soil is a reservoir of microbial diversity and the most supportive habitat for acquiring and transmitting antimicrobial resistance. Resistance transfer usually occurs from animal to soil and vice versa, and it may ultimately appear in clinical pathogens. In this study, the southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia were studied to assess the bacterial diversity and antimicrobial resistance that could be affected by the continuous development of tourism in the region. Such effects could have a long-lasting impact on the local environment and community. Culture-dependent, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and shotgun sequencing-based metagenomic approaches were used to evaluate the diversity, functional capabilities, and antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated from collected soil samples. Bacterial communities in the southwestern highlands were mainly composed of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria. A total of 102 antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and variants were identified in the soil microbiota and were mainly associated with multidrug resistance, followed by macrolide, tetracycline, glycopeptide, bacitracin, and beta-lactam antibiotic resistance. The mechanisms of resistance included efflux, antibiotic target alteration, and antibiotic inactivation. qPCR confirmed the detection of 18 clinically important ARGs. In addition, half of the 49 identified isolates were phenotypically resistant to at least one of the 15 antibiotics tested. Overall, ARGs and indicator genes of anthropogenic activities (human-mitochondrial [hmt] gene and integron-integrase [int1]) were found in relatively lower abundance. Along with a high diversity of bacterial communities, variation was observed in the relative abundance of bacterial taxa among sampling sites in the southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia.
Evaluating the colonization and distribution of fungal and bacterial bio-aerosol in Rajkot, western India using multi-proxy approach

Abstract:Bio-aerosol is an emerging pollutant of the technological age. Air pollution related episodes that are a region-specific phenomenon in our atmosphere, with bio-aerosols being the main area of the problem. The present research was focused on assessing the particulate, and culturable concentration of bacteria at five different spatially located sites in the Rajkot city and surroundings, in the western part of India. The highest (108.33 × 109 CFU m−3) and lowest (318 × 103 CFU m−3) bacterial concentrations were found in dump site and residential area, respectively. With reference to particulate concentration, higher (101.79 ± 8.09) concentrations were reported in the industrial area than other sampling locations. All sampling sites under the present study displayed greater variability of bacteria than that of particle concentration. The growth potential of various bacterial isolates from perspective bioaerosol was measured spectroscopically by measuring OD at 600 nm in rich medium. The isolate 1A displayed significantly higher growth compared to all other isolates after 24 h. Outcomes of the current work suggested that bacterial concentration was observed in the respirable fraction (< 2.5 μm) and so had the potential to penetrate the deeper part of the lungs. In addition, meteorological parameters (i.e., wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity) were measured to understand whether they had any effect on biotic matter. The temperature and relative humidity are the most important meteorological parameters responsible for the enhanced viability of bacteria. Land use and land cover feature were also studied to understand the spatial characteristics of bio-aerosol in the study area. This viewpoint summarizes available information on bio-aerosols and its impact on human health, devising strategies to understand characteristics of bio-aerosols and emphasizing the vital gaps in available knowledge such as to develop a relationship between biological agents and solid/liquid or a mixture of both to the assessment of dispersion behavior and toxicological nature during exposure.
Molecular sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of bioaerosols in hospital wards with different ventilation conditions

Abstract:Introduction: Bioaerosols are one of major sources of hospital-acquired infections (HAI's) that can pose serious health implications to the patients, health care workers and visitors in the hospitals across the world. Methodology: In this study, the molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of bioaerosols collected from Orthopedic Wards (OW) and Orthopedic Emergency Rooms (OER) of six hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan was done to investigate their diversity and genetic relatedness. Moreover, the role of different ventilation practices (i.e., centrally air-conditioned and non-central air-conditioned) in determining bioaerosols load was evaluated by using both culture and non-culture based (Flow cytometry) approaches. Results: The molecular characterization based on 16S rRNA gene and phylogenetic analysis of frequently recovered bacterial isolates showed 97-99% similarity to diverse sources i.e., air, soil and clinical strains isolated from various countries. The centrally air-conditioned hospitals had significantly lower levels of bioaerosols at most of the sites as compared to non- central air-conditioned hospitals. Conclusions: The molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences can be effective tool in identifying nature and evolution of bioaerosols, and can improve infection control and surveillance in hospitals. The observed levels of bioaerosols suggest hospitals equipped with central air conditioners have considerably more air hygiene compared to non-central air conditioning systems. These findings are imperative for informing policies on planning and implementation of infection control strategies in hospitals in resource limited settings.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Air comprises mixture of airborne bacteria & air pollutants in near surface of atmosphere. Air pollution is one of the major threat around the world due to change in physical and chemical parameters because of natural and anthropogenic activities; leading to climate change. Materials and Methods: A systematic analysis of AQI included air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, NO2, O3, NH3 using SAMEER app developed by CPCB and meteorological parameters including wind speed and relative humanity. The overuse of antibiotics since last two decades has lead pathogenic bacteria gaining resistance. Results: The study was carried out to identify the prevalence of MDR bacteria in air from 8 different spatial variations of Mumbai & Suburban areas. 32 isolates from air were collected by settle plate technique. Enumeration and characterization of bacteria was performed. Antibiotic susceptibility test against 10 antibiotics; test showed that all bacterial isolates were sensitive to Tigecycline. The bacteria were highly resistant to Methicillin by 81.25 %. ARI of two isolates was 0.9 & MRI of Vasai, 0.625 was the highest. The prominent pollutant among 8 locations was found to be PM2.5, CO & PM10. PCA & hierarchical cluster analysis showed that MRI is not correlated to 8 parameters but, distinctly related to NH3. Conclusions: The MDR bacteria travel from soil, plants, water, humans, places, inanimate objects into the air. Hence, it is necessary to maintain the sanitation, ecological balance & usage of antibiotics when necessary.

High-throughput sequencing applied to environmental sciences has enhanced the exploration of microbial populations in atmospheric samples. Thus, five nosocomial bioaerosols were collected, and the dominant microbial and pathogenic microorganisms were identified by high-throughput sequencing in this study. The results suggested that the dominant microorganisms at the genus level were Massilia, Sphingomonas, Methylobacterium, Methylophilus, Micrococcineae, and Corynebacterineae. The most abundant pathogenic microorganisms were Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Corynebacterium minutissimum, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Arcobacter butzleri, Aeromonas veronii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus cereus. The relationship between microbial communities and environmental factors was evaluated with canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Meanwhile, differences in the pathogenic bacteria between bioaerosols and dust in a typical hospital was investigated. Furthermore, cultivable Staphylococcus isolates with multi-drug resistance phenotype (>3 antibiotics) in the inpatient departments were much higher than those in the transfusion area and out-patient departments, possibly attributed to the dense usage of antibiotics in inpatient departments. The results of this study might be helpful for scientifically air quality control in hospitals.
Microbial Emission Levels and Diversities from Different Land Use Types.

Abstract:Bioaerosol particles, originated from many different earth ground sources, have unique health impacts, including respiratory infections, allergic reactions, and toxic effects. Here, we applied a portable high-flow sampler HighBioTrap to collect and investigate bioaerosol emissions from 13 different land types (forest, wetland, lake, bare soil, cropland, wastewater treatment facility, street, livestock farm, smeltery and garden) that are heavily or less affected by humans. Plate cultivation, real-time quantitative PCR analysis (q-PCR) and high-throughput gene sequencing analysis were used to characterize bacterial and fungal levels as well as their community structures emitted from different land use types. Results showed that there were statistically significant differences in biological emission levels (up to 100-fold difference) and diversity among different land use types. Cropland, sewage plant street and smeltery heavily affected by human activities were found to exhibit higher bioaerosol emission levels, with Massilia genus detected as the dominant species. In contrast, some land types (lakes, forests, gardens, and wetland) less affected by humans were found to emit lower bioaerosol levels but with higher culturability, e.g., up to 16% for wetland. In addition, the microbiological structures of these land-use types usually had higher species richness and diversity, yet different dominant species. For some land types such as streets in Beijing, the microbial community appeared to be skewed with an over 80% relative abundance of a specific dominant species such as Massilia. Other detected dominant species also included Acinetobacter and Brevundimonas for street, and Sphingomonas for wetland. For fungal community, Naganishia, Alternaria, Penicillium, and Aureobasidium were detected to be most abundant. RDA analysis showed metals and ions could to some extent affect the microbial community structures. This work highlights that the human activities could substantially affect the airborne microbiota, which in turn could affect local human health and ecosystems. On the other hand, the results here provide important references for quantitatively estimating the microbial emissions from the earth into the atmosphere.

Abstract:Introduction: Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution is a global public health concern, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions that experience dust events. Exposure to PM 2.5 has been associated with various short- and long-term health effects, which can be attributed to the composition of the fine particles. This study aimed to assess the concentration of bacteria and fungi in PM 2.5 in the air of Isfahan, Iran which experiences air pollution. Methods: A total of thirty-nine PM 2.5 samples were collected over 1 year. Bacterial and fungal concentrations associated with PM 2.5 were measured using both culture-based method and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: The average concentration of PM 2.5 was found to be 56 μg m −3 , with many samples exceeding the recommended limit of 15 μg m −3 set by the World Health Organization for PM 2.5 in ambient air. The mean culturable bacterial and fungal concentrations were 39 and 4 CFU m −3 , respectively which showed a significant difference compared to the results obtained through real-time PCR. No significant correlation was found between the levels of bacterial and fungal cells and PM 2.5 concentrations. The dominant phyla found in PM 2.5 were Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, while Proteobacteria as Gram-negative bacteria were rarely detected. Discussion: The findings suggest that the climate conditions in Isfahan, characterized by its semi-arid nature with low humidity content, influences the activity and viability of microbial populations, resulting in low concentrations of bioaerosols in PM 2.5 . Furthermore, it seems that desert dust events do not contribute to increasing the potential health risks associated with bacterial and fungal bioaerosols in PM 2.5 .

Abstract:Airborne bacteria along with chemical composition of aerosols were investigated during five sampling seasons at an offshore island of the East China Sea. Bacterial diversity was the lowest in spring, the highest in winter, and similar between the autumns of 2019 and 2020, suggesting remarkably seasonal variation but little interannual change. Geodermatophilus (Actinobacteria) was the indicator genus of mineral dust (MD) showed higher proportion in spring than in other seasons. Mastigocladopsis_PCC-10914 (Cyanobacteria) as the indicator of sea salt (SS) demonstrated the highest percentages in both autumns, when the air masses mainly passed over the ocean prior to the sampling site. The higher proportions of soil-derived genera Rubellimicrobium and Craurococcus (both Proteobacteria) and extremophile Chroococcidiopsis_SAG_2023 (Cyanobacteria) were found in summer and winter, respectively. Our study explores the linkage between aerosol source and transport path and bacterial composition, which has implication to understanding of land-sea transmission of bacterial taxa.

Abstract:Concerns about contaminants dispersed by seasonal precipitation have grown due to their potential hazards to outdoor environments and human health. However, studies on the crucial environmental factors influencing dispersion changes in bacterial communities are limited. This research adopted four-season in situ monitoring and sequencing techniques to examine the regional distribution profiles of bioaerosols, bacterial communities, and risks associated with extreme snowfall versus rainfall events in two monsoon cities. In the early-hours of winter snowfall, airborne cultivable bioaerosol concentrations were 4.1 times higher than the reference exposure limit (500 CFU/m 3 ). The concentration of ambient particles (2.5 μm) exceeded 24,910 particles/L (97 μg/m 3 ), positively correlating with the prevalence of cultivable bioaerosols. These bioaerosols contained cultivable bacterial species such as pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus , Staphylococcus epidermidis , Streptococcus pneumoniae , and Escherichia coli . Bioaerosol concentrations increased by 53.0% during 50-mm snow extremes. Taxonomic analysis revealed that Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, and Veillonella were the most abundant bacterial taxa in the initial snowmelt samples during winter precipitation. However, their abundance decreased by 87.6% as snowing continued (24 h). Reduced water base cation concentration also led to a 1.15-fold increase in the Shannon index, indicating a similar yet heightened bacterial diversity. Seasonally, Pedobacter and Massilia showed higher relative abundance (25% and 18%, respectively), presenting increased bacterial transmission to the soil. Furthermore, Pseudomonas was identified in 60% of spring snowstorm samples, suggesting long-distance dispersal of pathogenic bacteria. When these atmospheric aerosol particles carrying biological entities (0.65–1.1 μm) penetrated human alveoli, the calculated hazard ratio was 0.55, which as observed in inhalation exposures. Consequently, this study underscores the risk of seasonal precipitation-enhanced ambient bacterial transmission.
