Abstract:In a study conducted in Singapore, a country prone to dengue outbreaks due to its climate and urban population, researchers examined the effectiveness of releasing male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia (wAlbB strain) to reduce dengue transmission. These infected males, when mating with wild-type females, produced non-viable eggs, leading to vector suppression. Extensive field trials involving over 600,000 residents in four townships were conducted from 2018 to 2022. The results showed a 57% decline in total dengue incidence and a 64% decline in clustered dengue incidence. This approach offers promise for large-scale dengue control in regions facing rising dengue cases, providing a critical solution in combating the disease.

Abstract:Background Wolbachia incompatible insect technique (IIT) programs have been shown in field trials to be highly effective in suppressing populations of mosquitoes that carry diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. However, the frequent and repeated release of Wolbachia-infected male mosquitoes makes such programs resource-intensive. While the need for optimization is recognized, potential strategies to optimize releases and reduce resource utilization have not been fully explored. Methods We developed a process-based model to study the spatial-temporal metapopulation dynamics of mosquitoes in a Wolbachia IIT program, which explicitly incorporates climatic influence in mosquito life-history traits. We then used the model to simulate various scale-down and redistribution strategies to optimize the existing program in Singapore. Specifically, the model was used to study the trade-offs between the intervention efficacy outcomes and resource requirements of various release program strategies, such as the total number of release events and the number of mosquitoes released. Results We found that scaling down releases in existing sites from twice a week to only once a week yielded minimal changes in suppression efficacy (from 91% to 85%), while requiring 45% fewer mosquitoes and release events. Additionally, redistributing mosquitoes from already suppressed areas and releasing them in new areas once a week led to a greater total suppressive efficacy (88% compared to 65%) while also yielding a 16% and 14% reduction in the number of mosquitoes and release events required respectively. Conclusions Both scale-down and redistribution strategies can be implemented to significantly reduce program resource requirements without compromising the suppressive efficacy of IIT. These findings will inform planners on ways to optimize existing and future IIT programs, potentially allowing for the wider adoption of this method for mosquito-borne disease control.

Abstract:1082More than three thousand million people live with the risk of malaria. Due to the widespread resistance of mosquitoes to insecticides and of parasites to chemotherapies, previous gains made in disease reduction are being reversed. In addition to this perennial threat, there is now a rapid invasion of Aedes mosquitoes across the globe and the associated spread of the arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses) they carry. One half of the worlds population is now at risk of dengue, and chikungunya (having emerged from Africa) is an increasing public-health problem in Asia and the Americas. The economic and social costs of these diseases is so great that, in some areas, they have slowed the development of nations. Current vector-control methods are inadequate (especially against container-breeding species) because they are losing their effectiveness, the global burden of mosquito-borne diseases is increasing, and no specific drugs or effective global vaccines are available to treat or prevent the diseases. Therefore, there is a need for additional suppression methods to be applied as part of Integrated Vector Management (IVM). Since the early 2000s, there has been a renewed interest in applying the sterile insect technique (SIT) against mosquito vectors of disease. The explosive outbreaks of the Zika virus (and associated birth defects) across the tropics increased the urgency. The recent availability of technology to rear and release the sterilized males of many mosquito species on a large scale has increased the expectation that the SIT could help reduce the suffering caused by mosquito-borne diseases. Much progress has been made in developing the SIT technology for mosquitoes, based on historic SIT efforts and the experiences gained in the successful large-scale application of the technique against agricultural pest species. The SIT is a suitable technology for suppressing mosquitoes because: (1) they can be mass-reared in a laboratory, (2) natural sexual dimorphism in many species aids sex separation, and (3) females become refractory after mating. There has been a perception that mosquitoes are more vulnerable than many pest species to damage during handling, sterilization, and release. However, technological and methodological improvements can cope with this lower robustness, and indeed take advantage of their smaller size and weight. Nevertheless, the need for perfect sex separation for male-only release to preclude any biting and disease transmission by released females, remains a technical bottleneck to scaling the SIT beyond small-scale pilot trials. As a remedy for this, genetic sexing strains are being developed. However, until they are available, combining the SIT with cytoplasmic incompatibility conferred by Wolbachia infection (incompatible insect technique (IIT)) has been proposed as an advantageous strategy. The advantage of including the IIT is that Wolbachia infection may prevent potential disease transmission by any released females, whereas sterilization guarantees that such females cannot reproduce, avoiding the loss of the cytoplasmic incompatibility due to Wolbachia establishment in the target population. Another advantage of simultaneous IIT use is that it enables the radiation dose to be minimized. Other challenges remain, particularly in release technology and quality control. Nevertheless, in recent years, pilot trials have been conducted or have been initiated, e.g. China, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mauritius, Mexico, Singapore, and Thailand, achieving encouraging results in suppressing adult populations of Aedes species. Area-wide releases, focused on urban and suburban settings, appear particularly promising in terms of sustainable and cost-effective IVM of Aedes vectors (eventually provided commercially by the private sector) because they can protect many people concentrated in relatively small areas. In the case of Anopheles vectors, the SIT may become a useful complementary tool, especially against outdoor-biting species which are not well-controlled by mosquito nets. Mosquito-transmitted dengue is now the world’s most common mosquito-borne viral disease; over the last 50 years the incidence has grown more than 30-fold. Controlling the mosquito vectors would simultaneously combat several co-localized diseases, improving the benefit/cost ratio and sustainability of control efforts, particularly Integrated Vector Management programmes, which could include a sterile insect technique (SIT) component. The economic burden of vector-control costs, in an attempt to reduce or prevent cases of disease, needs to be factored into estimates of the cost of disease to a country or region. However, it may be necessary to assess more than one quality indicator to fully understand the impact of colonization, mass-rearing, and manipulations on the overall quality of sterile males. The potential impact of the successful control of mosquito vectors, through the combined use of the SIT and other control methods, can be estimated based on previous successful programmes.

Abstract:Background: Dengue is a severe environmental public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions. In Singapore, decreasing seroprevalence and herd immunity due to successful vector control has paradoxically led to increased transmission potential of the dengue virus. We have previously demonstrated that incompatible insect technique coupled with sterile insect technique (IIT-SIT), which involves the release of X-ray-irradiated male Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, reduced the Aedes aegypti population by 98% and dengue incidence by 88%. This novel vector control tool is expected to be able to complement current vector control to mitigate the increasing threat of dengue on a larger scale. We propose a multi-site protocol to study the efficacy of IIT-SIT at reducing dengue incidence. Methods/design: The study is designed as a parallel, two-arm, non-blinded cluster-randomized (CR) controlled trial to be conducted in high-rise public housing estates in Singapore, an equatorial city-state. The aim is to determine whether large-scale deployment of male Wolbachia-infected Ae. aegypti mosquitoes can significantly reduce dengue incidence in intervention clusters. We will use the CR design, with the study area comprising 15 clusters with a total area of 10.9 km2, covering approximately 722,204 residents in 1713 apartment blocks. Eight clusters will be randomly selected to receive the intervention, while the other seven will serve as non-intervention clusters. Intervention efficacy will be estimated through two primary endpoints: (1) odds ratio of Wolbachia exposure distribution (i.e., probability of living in an intervention cluster) among laboratory-confirmed reported dengue cases compared to test-negative controls and (2) laboratory-confirmed reported dengue counts normalized by population size in intervention versus non-intervention clusters. Discussion: This study will provide evidence from a multi-site, randomized controlled trial for the efficacy of IIT-SIT in reducing dengue incidence. The trial will provide valuable information to estimate intervention efficacy for this novel vector control approach and guide plans for integration into national vector control programs in dengue-endemic settings. Abstract:The strong suppression of Aedes albopictus on two Guangzhou islands in China has been successfully achieved by releasing males with an artificial triple- Wolbachia infection. However, it requires the use of radiation to sterilize residual females to prevent population replacement. To develop a highly effective tool for dengue control, we tested a standalone incompatible insect technique (IIT) to control A. albopictus in the urban area of Changsha, an inland city where dengue recently emerged. Male mosquitoes were produced in a mass rearing facility in Guangzhou and transported over 670 km under low temperature to the release site. After a once-per-week release with high numbers of males (phase I) and a subsequent twice-per-week release with low numbers of males (phase II), the average numbers of hatched eggs and female adults collected weekly per trap were reduced by 97% and 85%, respectively. The population suppression caused a 94% decrease in mosquito biting at the release site compared to the control site. Remarkably, this strong suppression was achieved using only 28% of the number of males released in a previous trial. Despite the lack of irradiation to sterilize residual females, no triple-infected mosquitoes were detected in the field post release based on the monitoring of adult and larval A. albopictus populations for two years, indicating that population replacement was prevented. Our results support the feasibility of implementing a standalone IIT for dengue control in urban areas.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: In the context of the ongoing, unprecedented Zika virus outbreak in the Americas, the World Health Organization has expressed its support for developing and up-scaling three novel approaches to controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito: the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), the Release of Insects carrying Dominant Lethal genes (RIDL) and the release of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes. Whereas the former two approaches are temporary insect population suppression strategies, Wolbachia infection is a self-sustaining, invasive strategy that uses inherited endosymbiotic bacteria to render natural mosquito populations arbovirus resistant.METHODS: A mathematical model is parameterised with new, Brazilian field data informing the mating competitiveness of mass-reared, released insects; and simulations compare and contrast projections of vector control achieved with the alternative approaches.RESULTS: Important disadvantages of Wolbachia and SIT are identified: both strategies result in mosquitoes ovipositing non-viable eggs and, by alleviating intense larval competition, can cause an overall increase in survival to the adult stage. However, it is demonstrated that strategically combining the suppression methods with Wolbachia can generate a sustained control while mitigating the risks of inadvertent exacerbation of the wild mosquito population.DISCUSSION: This initial analysis demonstrates potential for good synergy when combining novel mosquito approaches in a modernized, integrated vector control programme.

Abstract:Background. The control of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the main vectors of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, presents several challenges. The difficulties encountered in acquiring funding, implementing measures, obtaining community participation, acceptability and effectiveness, and the problem of insecticide resistance demonstrate the need to develop and optimise innovative vector control strategies. The sterile insect technique (SIT), the incompatible insect technique (IIT) and a combination of both (SIT-IIT) show promise. Numerous trials are being carried out worldwide to obtain evidence of their effectiveness before implementing them in large-scale, integrated vector-control strategies. The main objective of our study is to build an analytical framework for the identification and standardisation of appropriate entomological indicators that could be used to compare the relative effectiveness of the SIT, IIT and SIT-IIT methods in reducing Aedes vector populations. Methods. We reviewed the available scientific literature to compare the characteristics, methodologies, effectiveness indicators and results of various trials with the aim of standardising and comparing the indicators used in the trials, such as reductions in the egg hatch rate and in the adult populations. Results. Seventeen trials, either published in peer-reviewed journals or posted as preprints, were selected. We found wide variation among them in experimental design, field implementation and the methods of calculating the indicators. Although limited by the amount of available published data, our results suggest that a reduction in egg hatching greater than 45% results in up to 60% fewer females, greater than 60% results in over 80% fewer females, and greater than 70% results in over 90% fewer females. Therefore, the quality of implementation, assessed on the basis of egg hatch reduction, is statistically associated with effectiveness, assessed on the basis of the reduction in Aedes females. Conclusion. We present results suggesting that, when implemented effectively, the incompatible and sterile insect techniques are substantially effective in reducing Aedes mosquito populations. Furthermore, these techniques are species specific, non-insecticidal and environmentally friendly. However, it has yet to be shown that they can be scaled up as cost-effective operational tools for vector control and that they substantially reduce arbovirus transmission.
Economic impact of dengue in Singapore from 2010 to 2020 and the cost-effectiveness of Wolbachia interventions

Abstract:The release of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes is a promising disease intervention strategy that aims to control dengue and other arboviral infections. While early field trials and modelling studies suggest promising epidemiological and entomological outcomes, the overall cost effectiveness of the technology is not well studied in a resource rich setting nor under the suppression approach that aims to suppress the wild-type mosquito population through the release of Wolbachia-infected males. We used economical and epidemiological data from 2010 to 2020 to first ascertain the economic and health costs of dengue in Singapore, a high income nation where dengue is hyper-endemic. The hypothetical cost effectiveness of a national Wolbachia suppression program was then evaluated historically from 2010 to 2020. We estimated that the average economic impact of dengue in Singapore from 2010 to 2020 in constant 2010US$ ranged from $1.014 to $2.265 Billion. Using empirically derived disability weights, we estimated a disease burden of 7,645–21,262 DALYs from 2010–2020. Under an assumed steady-state running cost of a national Wolbachia suppression program in Singapore, we conservatively estimate that Wolbachia would cost an estimated $50,453–$100,907 per DALYs averted and would lead to an estimated $329.40 Million saved in economic costs over 2010 to 2020 under 40% intervention efficacy. Wolbachia releases in Singapore are expected to be highly cost-effective and its rollout must be prioritised to reduce the onward spread of dengue.

Abstract:Aedes aegypti, an aggressive nuisance biter and the primary vector for numerous arboviruses, such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, presents significant control challenges due to its ability to thrive in urban environments, escapes insecticide treatment by using cryptic resting and oviposition sites, and development of resistance to typical chemical mosquito control products being used routinely. To test a new approach in their integrative mosquito management toolbox. From 2020 to 2022, the Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD) employed the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to test a new approach in its integrated mosquito management toolbox, targeting the population suppression of Ae. aegypti on Captiva Island, Florida. Over 24.1 million sterile males were released across three phases, covering up to 142 hectares. The study demonstrated a population reduction of up to 79% in wild adults and a 59% decline in egg densities in the primary intervention area. While population control was successful, an influx of wild females from untreated zones posed ongoing challenges to complete suppression in areas close to non-intervention areas. This supported a need for an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) approach. These results underscore SITs potential as a critical tool in integrated mosquito management strategies and emphasize practical application.

Abstract:The radiation-based sterile insect technique (SIT) has successfully suppressed field populations of several insect pest species, but its effect on mosquito vector control has been limited. The related incompatible insect technique (IIT)—which uses sterilization caused by the maternally inherited endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia—is a promising alternative, but can be undermined by accidental release of females infected with the same Wolbachia strain as the released males. Here we show that combining incompatible and sterile insect techniques (IIT–SIT) enables near elimination of field populations of the world's most invasive mosquito species, Aedes albopictus. Millions of factory-reared adult males with an artificial triple-Wolbachia infection were released, with prior pupal irradiation of the released mosquitoes to prevent unintentionally released triply infected females from successfully reproducing in the field. This successful field trial demonstrates the feasibility of area-wide application of combined IIT–SIT for mosquito vector control.

Abstract:To suppress wild population of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary transmission vector of life-threatening diseases such as dengue, malaria, and Zika, an innovative strategy is to release male mosquitoes carrying the bacterium Wolbachia into natural areas to drive female sterility by cytoplasmic incompatibility. We develop a model of delay differential equations, incorporating the strong density restriction in the larval stage, to assess the delicate impact of life table parameters on suppression efficiency. Through mathematical analysis, we find the sufficient and necessary condition for global stability of the complete suppression state. This condition, combined with the experimental data for Aedes albopictus population in Guangzhou, helps us predict a large range of releasing intensities for suppression success. In particular, we find that if the number of released infected males is no less than four times the number of mosquitoes in wild areas, then the mosquito density in the peak season can be reduced by 95%. We introduce an index to quantify the dependence of suppression efficiency on parameters. The invariance of some quantitative properties of the index values under various perturbations of the same parameter justifies the applicability of this index, and the robustness of our modeling approach. The index yields a ranking of the sensitivity of all parameters, among which the adult mortality has the highest sensitivity and is considerably more sensitive than the natural larvae mortality.

Abstract:BACKGROUND There is a steady rise in the global incidence of Aedes-borne arbovirus disease. It has become urgent to develop alternative solutions for mosquito vector control. We developed a new method of sterilization of male mosquitoes, with the goal to suppress a local Aedes aegypti population and to prevent the spread of dengue. METHODS Sterile male mosquitoes were produced from a locally acquired Ae. aegypti colony by using a treatment that includes double-stranded RNA and thiotepa. A field study was conducted, with sterile mosquito releases being performed on a weekly basis in predefined areas. Two intervention periods (INT1 and INT2) were carried out, with treatment and control areas reversed between INT1 and INT2. RESULTS During INT1, releases in the treated area resulted in up to 91.4% reduction of live progeny of field Ae. aegypti mosquitoes recorded over time, while the control neighborhoods (no releases of sterile male mosquitoes) remained highly infested. The successful implementation of the program during INT1 and INT2 were associated with a 15.9-fold and 13.7-fold lower incidences of dengue in the treated area compared to the control areas, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our data show the success of this new SIT-based program in preventing the spread of dengue.

Abstract:Background: Wolbachia symbiosis in Aedes aegypti is an emerging biocontrol measure against dengue. However, assessing its real-world efficacy is challenging due to the non-randomised, field-based nature of most intervention studies. This research re-evaluates the spatial-temporal impact of Wolbachia interventions on dengue incidence using a large battery of quasi-experimental methods and assesses each method's validity. Methods: A systematic search for Wolbachia intervention data was conducted via PUBMED. Efficacy was reassessed using commonly-used quasi-experimental approaches with extensive robustness checks, including geospatial placebo tests and a simulation study. Intervention efficacies across multiple study sites were computed using high-resolution aggregations to examine heterogeneities across sites and study periods. We further designed a stochastic simulation framework to assess the methods' ability to estimate intervention efficacies (IE). Results: Wolbachia interventions in Singapore, Malaysia, and Brazil significantly decreased dengue incidence, with reductions ranging from 48.17% to 69.19%. IEs varied with location and duration. Malaysia showed increasing efficacy over time, while Brazil exhibited initial success with subsequent decline, hinting at operational challenges. Singapore's strategy was highly effective despite partial saturation. Simulations identified Synthetic Control Methods (SCM) and its variant, count Synthetic Control Method (cSCM), as superior in precision, with the smallest percentage errors in efficacy estimation. These methods also demonstrated robustness in placebo tests. Conclusions: Wolbachia interventions exhibit consistent protective effects against dengue. SCM and cSCM provided the most precise and robust estimates of IEs, validated across simulated and real-world settings.

Abstract:Abstract It is often difficult to control the vector mosquito Aedes albopictus using conventional chemical control methods alone at an operational level mainly because of (1) the ability of the species to lay eggs in a variety of places which are often difficult to detect or access by larviciding operators, (2) the inherent tendency of adults to live and feed outdoor which makes them unlikely targets of Insecticide Residual Spraying and (3) the development of resistance to insecticides by the species. It is therefore necessary for countries to investigate alternative control methods (such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)) that can be integrated in their national vector control programme in order to address those limitations. In this field trial, mass-produced, radio-sterilized Ae. albopictus males could successfully compete with wild males in a small village in Mauritius. Our study also demonstrated that within specific eco-climatic conditions, SIT can be used as a suppression tool against Ae. albopictus and, unlike numerous chemical control methods, effectively maintain the suppression level when the latter is found at low densities. Finally, the need for mosquito SIT programmes to develop contingency plans against increasingly frequent extreme weather occurrences was also highlighted.

Abstract:Mosquito-borne diseases are becoming a major health problem worldwide. At present, the principal method of controlling these diseases entirely depends on the mosquito vector control strategies. However, traditional control methods which are focussed on reducing mosquito populations through environmental management and the application of insecticides are largely ineffective. Hence, various control methods, including the release of sterile insect technique (SIT), have been proposed for the reduction of the mosquito population. As a species-specific control strategy, SIT offers considerable environmental benefits and a chemical-free option for insect control. However, the application of the SIT to mosquito control consistently suffered from lack of efficient sexing system, high fitness cost and operational difficulty in ionizing radiation, density-dependent nature of the target mosquito population and various other technical issues. The intervention of genetic engineering has led to several improvements in the operation or security of SIT programmes. The advent of mosquito transgenesis has paved the way for novel approaches in mosquito control. One possibility is a release of insects carrying dominant lethal (RIDL) strategy by engineering self-limiting gene, which offers solutions for many drawbacks of traditional SIT by providing genetic sterilization, genetic sexing, genetic containment and provision of genetic markers while maintaining its environmentally benign and species-specific utility. The success of this strategy often depends on how genetic modification affects the fitness of the mosquitoes. With several improvements and modifications allowing minimum fitness load, RIDL is now available for a wide range of mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Anopheles stephensi with field-testing possibilities. However, with solid epidemiological evidence and community support, widespread implementation of these strategies might reverse the current alarming global mosquito vector-borne diseases.

Abstract:The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is one of the sustainable strategies for the control of disease vectors, which consists of releasing sterilized males that will mate with the wild females, resulting in a reduction and, eventually a local elimination, of the wild population. The implementation of the SIT in the field can become problematic when there are inaccessible areas where the release of sterile insects cannot be carried out directly, and the migration of wild insects from these areas to the treated zone may influence the efficacy of this technique. However, we can also take advantage of the movement of sterile individuals to control the wild population in these unreachable places. In this paper, we derive a two-patch model for Aedes mosquitoes where we consider the discrete diffusion between the treated area and the inaccessible zone. We investigate two different release strategies (constant and impulsive periodic releases), and by using the monotonicity of the model, we show that if the number of released sterile males exceeds some threshold, the technique succeeds in driving the whole population in both areas to extinction. This threshold depends on not only the biological parameters of the population but also the diffusion between the two patches.

Abstract:Pacific Island countries have experienced periodic dengue, chikungunya and Zika outbreaks for decades. The prevention and control of these mosquito-borne diseases rely heavily on control of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which in most settings are the primary vector. Introgression of the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia pipientis ( w Mel strain) into Ae . aegypti populations reduces their vector competence and consequently lowers dengue incidence in the human population. Here we describe successful area-wide deployments of w Mel-infected Ae . aegypti in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi (Fiji), Port Vila (Vanuatu) and South Tarawa (Kiribati). With community support, weekly releases of w Mel-infected Ae . aegypti mosquitoes for between 2 to 5 months resulted in w Mel introgression in nearly all locations. Long term monitoring confirmed a high, self-sustaining prevalence of w Mel infecting mosquitoes in almost all deployment areas. Measurement of public health outcomes were disrupted by the Covid19 pandemic but are expected to emerge in the coming years. For decades, dengue, Zika and chikungunya have been public health issues across the Pacific Island region. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are considered most responsible for the transmission of dengue between people. The introduction of a bacteria called Wolbachia pipientis ( w Mel strain) to these mosquitoes is known to reduce the transmission of these diseases. Herein, we describe the production and release of w Mel-carrying Ae . aegypti mosquitoes into several Pacific Island cities, including Suva, Lautoka, and Nadi in Fiji, Port Vila in Vanuatu, and South Tarawa in Kiribati. With community support, these mosquitoes were released on a weekly basis for periods ranging from 2 to 5 months. The result was a widespread integration of the w Mel bacteria into local mosquito populations. Long-term monitoring has shown that the w Mel bacteria has been sustained at high levels in mosquitoes in nearly all of the areas where it was introduced. This innovative approach could potentially improve the way we combat mosquito-borne diseases, protecting communities in the Pacific Islands and beyond from the devastating effects of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

Abstract:The global expansion of Aedes albopictus, together with the absence of specific treatment and vaccines for most of the arboviruses it transmits, has stimulated the development of more sustainable and ecologically acceptable methods for control of disease transmission through the suppression of natural vector populations. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is rapidly evolving as an additional tool for mosquito control, offering an efficient and more environment-friendly alternative to the use of insecticides. Following the devastating chikungunya outbreak, which affected 38% of the population on Reunion Island (a French overseas territory in the southwest of the Indian Ocean), there has been strong interest and political will to develop effective alternatives to the existing vector control strategies. Over the past 10 years, the French Research and Development Institute (IRD) has established an SIT feasibility program against Ae. albopictus on Reunion Island in collaboration with national and international partners. This program aimed to determine whether the SIT based on the release of radiation-sterilized males is scientifically and technically feasible, and socially acceptable as part of a control strategy targeting the local Ae. albopictus population. This paper provides a review of a multi-year and a particularly broad scoping process of establishing the scientific and technological feasibility of the SIT against Ae. albopictus on Reunion Island. It also draws attention to some prerequisites of the decision-making process, through awareness campaigns to enhance public understanding and support, social adoption, and regulatory validation of the SIT pilot tests.
