Abstract:Experimental findings by others suggest that OH radicals are formed in unexpected abundance on or near surfaces of 1–50 μm microdroplets comprised of pure water, but the mechanism by which these radicals are generated is not yet fully resolved. In this work, we examine two possibilities using ab initio electronic structure methods: (1) electron transfer (ET) from a microdroplet surface-bound OH− anion to a nearby H3O+ cation and (2) proton transfer (PT) from such a H3O+ cation to a nearby OH− anion. Our findings suggest that both processes are possible but only if the droplet’s underlying water molecules comprising the microdroplet provide little screening of the Coulomb interaction between the anion and cation once they reach ∼10 Å of one another. In the ET event, an OH radical is formed directly; for PT, the OH formation occurs because the new O–H bond formed by the transferred proton is created at a bond length sufficiently elongated to permit homolytic cleavage. Both the ET and PT pathways predict that H atoms will also be formed. Finally, we discuss the roles played by strong local electric fields in mechanisms that have previously been proposed and that occur in our two mechanisms.

Abstract:Water microdroplets have been demonstrated to exhibit extraordinary chemical behaviors, including the abilities to accelerate chemical reactions by several orders of magnitude and to trigger reactions that cannot occur in bulk water. One of the most striking examples is the spontaneous generation of hydroxyl radical from hydroxide ions. Alcohols and alkoxide ions, being structurally similar to water and hydroxide ions, might exhibit similar behavior on microdroplets. Here, we report the spontaneous generation of alkoxide radicals from alcohols (RCH2OH) in aqueous microdroplets through quantum chemical calculations, quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, ab initio MD simulations, and mass spectrometry. Our results show that an electric field (EF) on the order of 10-1 V/Å and partial solvation at the air‒water interface jointly promote the dissociation of RCH2OH into RCH2O- and H3O+ ions. QM/MM MD simulations indicate that RCH2O- can be ionized to produce RCH2O• radicals on the microdroplet surface. Furthermore, partial solvation and the EF collaboratively catalyze the isomerization of the RCH2O• radical into a more stable tautomer, R•CHOH. This study highlights the molecular mechanisms underlying the widespread generation of radicals at the microdroplet surface and provides insights into the importance of fundamental alcohol chemistry in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Spontaneous generation of H2O2 in sub-10 mu m-sized water microdroplets has received increasing interest since its first discovery in 2019. On the other hand, due to the short lifetime of these microdroplets (rapid evaporation) and lack of suitable tools to real-time monitor the generation of H(2)O(2 )in individual microdroplets, such a seemingly thermodynamically unfavorable process has also raised vigorous debates on the origin of H(2)O(2 )and the underlying mechanism. Herein, we prepared water microdroplets with a long lifetime (>1 h) by virtue of microwell confinement and dynamically monitored the spontaneous generation of H(2)O(2 )in individual microdroplets via time-lapsed fluorescence imaging. It was unveiled that H(2)O(2 )was continuously generated in the as-prepared water microdroplets and an apparent equilibrium concentration of similar to 3 mu M of H(2)O(2 )in the presence of a H2O2-consuming reaction can be obtained. Through engineering the geometry of these microdroplets, we further revealed that the generation rates of H(2)O(2 )in individual microdroplets were positively proportional to their surface-to-volume ratios. This also allowed us to extract a maximal H(2)O(2 )generation rate of 7.7 nmol m(-2) min(-1) in the presence of a H2O2-consuming reaction and derive the corresponding probability of spontaneous conversion of interfacial H2O into H(2)O(2 )for the first time, that is, similar to 1 of 65,000 water molecules in 1 s. These findings delivered strong evidence that the spontaneous generation of H(2)O(2 )indeed occurs at the surface of microdroplets and provided us with an important starting point to further enhance the yield of H(2)O(2 )in water microdroplets for future applications.

Abstract:Exploration of the unique chemical properties of interfaces can unlock new understanding. A striking example is the finding of accelerated reactions, particularly spontaneous oxidation reactions, that occur without assistance of catalysts or external oxidants at the air interface of both aqueous and organic solutions (provided they contain some water). This finding opened a new area of interfacial chemistry but also caused heated debate regarding the primary chemical species responsible for the observed oxidation. An overview of the literature covering oxidation in microdroplets with air interfaces is provided, together with a critical examination of previous findings and hypotheses. The water radical cation/radical anion pair, formed spontaneously and responsible for the electric field at or near the droplet/air interface, is suggested to constitute the primary redox species. Mechanisms of accelerated microdroplet reactions are critically discussed and it is shown that hydroxyl radical/hydrogen peroxide formation in microdroplets does not require that these species be the primary oxidant. Instead, we suggest that hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide are the products of water radical cation decay in water. The importance of microdroplet chemistry in the prebiotic environment is sketched briefly and the role of partial solvation in reaction acceleration is noted.

Abstract:Zare and co-workers have recently claimed that hydrogen peroxide is spontaneously generated on the air-water interface of sprayed microdroplets, i.e., that H2O2 forms without an external energy source or co-reactant or catalyst. Specifically, they find that the H2O2(aq) concentration in sprayed microdroplets increases by a factor of 3.5 (or 2.5) as the spray chamber's relative humidity (RH) is changed from 15% to 50% (or from 15% to 95%). Building on these results, they imply causation for the seasonality of viral infections arising from the RH-dependent H2O2 generation in environmental microdroplets. Here, we present an alternative explanation for their observations.

Abstract:The formation of clouds results from condensation of water vapor into liquid water droplets. These water droplets form on the surface of tiny particles that are suspended in the air, like dust. Atmospheric chemistry relies heavily on the hydroxyl radical (OH*), which is highly reactive and prone to combining with hydrogen atoms in other compounds. Despite previous studies concerning liquid, solid, and gas phase interactions, how hydroxyl radicals interact with condensed water droplets is still unknown. OH*-condensed droplet interactions show unique behavior, according to our studies. Several hydrogen transfers were detected during the interaction process. It takes approximately 3.5 kcal/mol of energy to initiate hydrogen transfer. Moreover, we revealed the dominant structures of hydrated radicals during the mobility of OH* into condensed droplets using Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations. In contrast to our previous studies, the hemibond doesn't significantly affect the stability of OH*(H2O)n structures in condensed droplets. Our results showed that condensed droplets hinder the mobility of OH*, causing its diffusion coefficient to decrease. Moreover, several analyses were carried out to investigate condensed droplet surfaces, bonding patterns, and the position of OH* in conjunction with water molecules, including mobility analyses, radial distribution functions, coordination analyses, and population analyses.

Abstract:Recent reports on the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$) in water microdroplets produced via pneumatic spraying or capillary condensation have garnered significant attention. How covalent bonds in water could break under such conditions challenges our textbook understanding of physical chemistry and the water substance. While there is no definitive answer, it has been speculated that ultrahigh electric fields at the air-water interface are responsible for this chemical transformation. Here, we resolve this mystery via a comprehensive experimental investigation of H$_2$O$_2$ formation in (i) water microdroplets sprayed over a range of liquid flow-rates, the (shearing) air flow rates, and the air composition (ii) water microdroplets condensed on hydrophobic substrates formed via hot water or humidifier under controlled air composition. Specifically, we assessed the contributions of the evaporative concentration and shock waves in sprays and the effects of trace O$_3$(g) on the H$_2$O$_2$ formation. Glovebox experiments revealed that the H$_2$O$_2$ formation in water microdroplets was most sensitive to the air-borne ozone (O$_3$) concentration. In the absence of O$_3$(g), we could not detect H$_2$O$_2$(aq) in sprays or condensates (detection limit: 250 nM. In contrast, microdroplets exposed to atmospherically relevant O$_3$(g) concentration (10-100 ppb) formed 2-30 $\mu$M H$_2$O$_2$(aq); increasing the gas-liquid surface area, mixing, and contact duration increased H$_2$O$_2$(aq) concentration. Thus, the mystery is resolved - the water surface facilitates the O$_3$(g) mass transfer, which is followed by the chemical transformation of O$_3$(aq) into H$_2$O$_2$(aq). These findings should also help us understand the implications of this chemistry in natural and applied contexts.

Abstract:Three new collagen markers deriving from the collagenous matrix, e.g. carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP), carboxy-terminal pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), and aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) were used for the diagnose of prostatic bone metastases. Blood samples were obtained prior to biopsy or TURP. Serum PICP, PIIINP and ICTP were measured with commercial available RIAs and PSA by IRMA. Serum PSA was increased in patients with local prostatic cancer compared with patients with hyperplasia (p < 0.05). The level of PIIINP, ICTP, and PICP did not differ between these two groups. In patients with metastatic prostatic cancer all five markers were increased compared to the level measured in patients with localized cancer (p < 0.0001). All variables showed a significant positive relationship with alkaline phosphatase. The sensitivity ranged from 0.53 to 0.62 and specificity from 0.91 to 0.95. The sensitivity for alkaline phosphatase and PSA was 0.69 and 0.66 and specificity 0.91 and 0.68, respectively.

Abstract:Recent reports on the spontaneous formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at the air–water and solid–water interfaces challenge our current understanding of aquatic chemistry and have ramifications on atmosphere chemistry models, surface science, and green chemistry. Suggested mechanisms underlying this chemical transformation include ultrahigh instantaneous electric fields at the air–water interface and the oxidation of water and reduction of the solid at the solid–water interface. Here, we revisit this curious problem with NMR spectroscopy (with an H2O2 detection limit ≥50 nM) and pay special attention to the effects of nebulizing gas, dissolved oxygen content, and the solid–water interface on this chemical transformation in condensed and sprayed water microdroplets. Experiments reveal that the reduction of dissolved oxygen at the solid–water interface predominantly contributes to the H2O2 formation (not the oxidation of hydroxyl ions at the air–water interface or the oxidation of water at the solid–water interface). We find that the H2O2 formation is accompanied by the consumption (i.e., reduction) of dissolved oxygen and the oxidation of the solid surface, i.e., in the absence of dissolved oxygen, the formation of H2O2(aq) is not observed within the detection limit of ≥50 nM. Remarkably, the tendency of the solids investigated in this work towards forming H2O2 in water followed the same order as their positions in the classic Galvanic series. These findings bust the prevailing myths surrounding H2O2 formation due to the air–water interface, the ultrahigh electric fields therein, or the micro-scale of droplets. The hitherto unrealized role of the oxidation of the solid surface due to dissolved oxygen in the formation of H2O2 is exposed. These findings are especially relevant to corrosion science, surface science, and electrochemistry, among others.

Abstract:Recent reports on the production of hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$) on the surface of condensed water microdroplets without the addition of catalysts or additives have sparked significant interest. The underlying mechanism is speculated to be ultrahigh electric fields at the air-water interface; smaller droplets present higher interfacial area and produce higher (detectable) H$_2$O$_2$ yields. Herein, we present an alternative explanation for these experimental observations. We compare H$_2$O$_2$ production in water microdroplets condensed from vapor produced via (i) heating water to 50-70 {\deg}C and (ii) ultrasonic humidification (as exploited in the original report). Water microdroplets condensed after heating do not show any enhancement in the H$_2$O$_2$ level in comparison to the bulk water, regardless of droplet size or the substrate wettability. In contrast, those condensed after ultrasonic humidification produce significantly higher H$_2$O$_2$ quantities. We conclude that the ultrasonication of water contributes to the H$_2$O$_2$ production, not droplet interfacial effects.

Abstract:Contact electrification between water and a solid surface is crucial for physicochemical processes at water–solid interfaces. However, the nature of the involved processes remains poorly understood, especially in the initial stage of the interface formation. Here we report that H 2 O 2 is spontaneously produced from the hydroxyl groups on the solid surface when contact occurred. The density of hydroxyl groups affects the H 2 O 2 yield. The participation of hydroxyl groups in H 2 O 2 generation is confirmed by mass spectrometric detection of 18 O in the product of the reaction between 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid and 18 O–labeled H 2 O 2 resulting from 18 O 2 plasma treatment of the surface. We propose a model for H 2 O 2 generation based on recombination of the hydroxyl radicals produced from the surface hydroxyl groups in the water–solid contact process. Our observations show that the spontaneous generation of H 2 O 2 is universal on the surfaces of soil and atmospheric fine particles in a humid environment.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate the influence of vessel wall injury, incurred during routine vein preparation, on smooth muscle cell proliferation. METHODS A newly developed quantitative organ culture was used, in which segments of human saphenous vein were cultured in medium containing 30% fetal bovine serum and 1 microCi.ml-1 of [3H]thymidine for up to 14 d. Endothelial integrity was measured by scanning electron microscopy and medial cell viability by adenine nucleotide concentrations. Cell proliferation was measured by DNA concentration, global incorporation of [3H]thymidine, and by counting labelled cells in autoradiographs of transverse sections. RESULTS Surgical preparation led to endothelial injury and reduced adenine triphosphate concentration by 60%. Surgically prepared veins also suffered a significant decline in DNA concentration during culture, which implied that injury led to cell necrosis. Surgically prepared veins showed 2.1- and 2.7-fold greater global incorporation of [3H]thymidine than freshly isolated veins after 7 and 14 d in culture, respectively, which corresponded with a 23-fold and 11-fold greater abundance of thymidine labelled cells in the medial layer. Intimal thickening and the numbers of total and thymidine labelled cells in the intimal layer were similar. CONCLUSIONS The data show that injury incurred during routine surgical preparation is associated with enhanced medial smooth muscle cell proliferation. The effect of injury was most probably to permit an increased response of medial smooth muscle cells to serum derived mitogens.
Busting the Myth of Spontaneous Formation of H2O2 at the Air-Water Interface: Contributions of the Liquid-Solid Interface and Dissolved Oxygen Exposed

Abstract:Recent reports on the spontaneous formation of H2O2(aq) at the air-water interface and the solid-water interface have been sensational. The speculated mechanism at the air-water interface is based on instantaneous ultrahigh electric fields and the micro-scale of droplets, whereas the solid-water interface is speculated to be the site for oxidation of water (or hydroxide ions) and reduction of the solid surface. We utilized 1H-NMR spectroscopy to investigate the effects of the nebulizing gas, the dissolved oxygen content, and solid substrates on the H2O2(aq) formation (detection limit 50 nM). Experiments revealed that contrary to the sensational claims, the air-water interface is not the site for H2O2(aq) formation; instead, it is the solid-water interface where H2O2(aq) is formed during the reduction of dissolved oxygen and oxidation of the solid surface. Curiously, the tendencies of solid substrates towards forming H2O2(aq) follow the classic Galvanic series. This report advances the current understanding of aquatic chemistry and should be relevant to corrosion science, surface science, and electrochemistry.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation occurs frequently under ambient conditions in enzymatic or nanomaterial-based catalysis and is vitally important during advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, we demonstrated a spontaneous formation ROS of •OH, H 2 O 2 and •O 2 − in water microdroplets under ambient conditions without any catalysts presenting a real green source of ROS. Control experiments revealed that at the interface of water microdroplets electrons were transferred from OH − to O 2 , leading to the formation of •OH (230.25 μM/min), H 2 O 2 (152.5 μM/min) and 1 O 2 (•O 2 − ) (0.11 μM/min), respectively. The generation of the ROS was applied for the oxidative removal of organic pollutants, such as rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue, nile blue, and fluorescein. A multi-nozzle spraying of water produced large amounts of ROS capable of removing 2 mL RhB solution at 100 μg/mL in 4 h. In sum, compared to the previous works, although this strategy is limited by the production of the ROS, water microdroplets also will be a significant and real green source of ROS without any additives (catalysts, nanomaterials, irradiation UV light, especially chemical reagents) at all. And we believe the limitation will be greatly improved by the designing spray array in the future.

Abstract:Photochemical homolysis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) occurs widely in nature and is a key source of hydroxyl radicals (·OH). The kinetics of H2O2 photolysis play a pivotal role in determining the efficiency of ·OH production, which is currently mainly investigated in bulk systems. Here, we report considerably accelerated H2O2 photolysis at the air-water interface of microdroplets, with a rate 1.9 × 103 times faster than that in bulk water. Our simulations show that due to the trans quasiplanar conformational preference of H2O2 at the air-water interface compared to the bulk or gas phase, the absorption peak in the spectrum of H2O2 is significantly redshifted by 45 nm, corresponding to greater absorbance of photons in the sunlight spectrum and faster photolysis of H2O2. This discovery has great potential to solve current problems associated with ·OH-centered heterogeneous photochemical processes in aerosols. For instance, we show that accelerated H2O2 photolysis in microdroplets could lead to markedly enhanced oxidation of SO2 and volatile organic compounds.
Dependence on Relative Humidity in the Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species in Water Droplets

Abstract:Water microdroplets (7 to 11 µm average diameter, depending on flow rate) are sprayed in a closed chamber at ambient temperature, whose relative humidity (RH) is controlled. The resulting concentration of ROS (reactive oxygen species) formed in the microdroplets, measured by the amount of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), is determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and by spectrofluorimetric assays after the droplets are collected. The results are found to agree closely with one another. In addition, hydrated hydroxyl radical cations (•OH-H 3 O + ) are recorded from the droplets using mass spectrometry and superoxide radical anions (•O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. As the RH varies from 15 to 95%, the concentration of H 2 O 2 shows a marked rise by a factor of about 3.5 in going from 15 to 50%, then levels off. By replacing the H 2 O of the sprayed water with deuterium oxide (D 2 O) but keeping the gas surrounding droplets with H 2 O, mass spectrometric analysis of the hydrated hydroxyl radical cations demonstrates that the water in the air plays a dominant role in producing H 2 O 2 and other ROS, which accounts for the variation with RH. As RH increases, the droplet evaporation rate decreases. These two facts help us understand why viruses in droplets both survive better at low RH values, as found in indoor air in the wintertime, and are disinfected more effectively at higher RH values, as found in indoor air in the summertime, thus explaining the recognized seasonality of airborne viral infections.

Abstract:Hydroxyl radicals (OH) play a central role in the interstellar medium. Here, we observe highly rotationally excited OH radicals with energies above the bond dissociation energy, termed OH “super rotors”, from the vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation of water. The most highly excited OH( X ) super rotors identified at 115.2 nm photolysis have an internal energy of 4.86 eV. A striking enhancement in the yield of vibrationally-excited OH super rotors is detected when exciting the bending vibration of the water molecule. Theoretical analysis shows that bending excitation enhances the probability of non-adiabatic coupling between the B̃ and X̃ states of water at collinear O–H–H geometries following fast internal conversion from the initially excited D̃ state. The present study illustrates a route to produce extremely rotationally excited OH( X ) radicals from vacuum ultraviolet water photolysis, which may be related to the production of the highly rotationally excited OH( X ) radicals observed in the interstellar medium.
