Abstract:Carbon migration, transformation, and emissions as CO2 in reservoir and lake systems have been extensively studied. However, uncertainties persist regarding carbon cycling variations in both karst and non-karst regions within large thermal stratified river-reservoir systems. To address this knowledge gap, we combined measurements of water chemistry, isotopic compositions (delta C-13), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)), and CO2 fluxes (F-CO2) to elucidate the differences, control mechanisms, and environmental effects of various carbon biogeochemical processes in the Hongjiadu reservoir (HJD, karst reservoir) and Shangyoujiang reservoir (SYJ, non-karst reservoir), Yangtze River basin, China. Our results demonstrate that key biogeochemical processes are associated with CO2 production and emissions. The stronger biological carbon pump (BCP) effect in the lentic area of the HJD reservoir limited CO2 emission (0.9 +/- 5.0 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) compared to the SYJ reservoir (50.9 +/- 33.4 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), leading to low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and high saturation state of carbonate minerals in the lentic epilimnion. Although the released water from both reservoirs acted as hotspots for CO2 emissions, the results of higher Revelle factor (RF) in the HJD reservoir than SYJ reservoir suggest the greater buffer capacity and lower sensitivity of OC degradation changes in DIC. Despite the shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) of SYJ reservoir (120 d) compared to HJD reservoir (368 d), F-CO2 was 3.5 times higher than that of the HJD reservoir (652.9 mmol m(-2) d(-1)). Moreover, upon analyzing selected reservoirs worldwide, it becomes apparent that karst reservoirs demonstrate a reduced potential for CO2 emissions. Our results indicate that the impact of varying geologic settings should be considered to minimize errors in regional and global CO2 emission estimates.
Decadal shifts in Qingzang Plateau lake carbon dynamics (1970–2020): From predominant carbon sources to emerging sinks

Abstract:The evasion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from lakes significantly influences the global carbon equilibrium. Amidst global climatic transformations, the role of Qingzang Plateau (QZP) lakes as carbon (C) sources or sinks remains a subject of debate. Furthermore, accurately quantifying their contribution to the global carbon budget presents a formidable challenge. Here, spanning half a century (1970–2020), we utilize a synthesis of literature and empirical field data to assess the CO 2 exchange flux of QZP lakes. We find markedly higher CO 2 exchange flux in the southeast lakes than that in the northern and western regions from 1970 to 2000. During this time, both freshwater and saltwater lakes served primarily as carbon sources. The annual CO 2 exchange flux was estimated at 2.04 ± 0.37 Tg (Tg) C yr −1 , mainly influenced by temperature fluctuations. The CO 2 exchange flux patterns underwent a geographical inversion between 2000 and 2020, with increased levels in the west and decreased levels in the east. Notably, CO 2 emissions from freshwater lakes diminished, and certain saltwater lakes in the QTP transitioned from carbon sources to sinks. From 2000 to 2020, the annual CO 2 exchange flux from QZP lakes is estimated at 1.34 ± 0.50 Tg C yr −1 , with solar radiation playing a more pronounced role in carbon emissions. Cumulatively, over the past five decades, QZP lakes have generally functioned as carbon sources. Nevertheless, the total annual CO 2 emissions have declined since the year 2000, indicating a potential shift trend from being a carbon source to a sink, mirroring broader patterns of global climate change. These findings not only augment our understanding of the carbon cycle in plateau aquatic systems but also provide crucial data for refining China's carbon budget.

Abstract:Globally, numerous freshwater lakes exist, and rapid urbanization has impacted carbon biogeochemical cycling at the interface where water meets air in these bodies. However, there is still a limited understanding of CO2 absorption/emission in eutrophic urbanizing lakes. This study therefore involved biweekly in-situ monitoring to evaluate fluctuations in the partial pressure (pCO2) and flux (fCO2) of CO2 and associated parameters from January to September 2020 (7:00-17:00 CST) in an urbanizing lake in southwestern China. Our study revealed that during the daylight hours of the 11 sampling days, both pCO2 and fCO2 consistently demonstrated decreasing trends from the early morning period to the late afternoon period, with notable increases on May 7th and August 15th, respectively. Interestingly, unlike our previous findings, an nonsignificant difference (p > 0.05) in mean pCO2 and fCO2 was observed between the morning period and the afternoon period (n = 22). Furthermore, the mean pCO2 in January (~105 μatm; n = 4) and April (133-212 μatm; n = 8) was below the typical atmospheric CO2 level (C-sink), while that in the other months surpassed 410 μatm (C-source), although the average values (n = 44) of pCO2 and fCO2 were 960 ± 841 μatm and 57 ± 85 mmol m-2 h-1, respectively. Moreover, the pCO2 concentration was significantly greater in summer (May to August, locally reaching 1087 μatm) than in spring (January to April at 112 μatm), indicating a seasonal shift between the C-sink (spring) and the C-source (summer). In addition, a significant positive correlation in pCO2/fCO2 with chlorophyll-a/nitrate but a negative correlation in dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus were recorded, suggesting that photosynthesis and respiration were identified as the main drivers of CO2 absorption/emissions, while changes in nitrate and phosphorus may be attributed to urbanization. Overall, our investigations indicated that this lightly eutrophic lake demonstrated a distinct shifting pattern of CO2 source-sink variability at daily and seasonal scales.
Air–water CO2 flux in an algae bloom year for Lake Hongfeng, Southwest China: implications for the carbon cycle of global inland waters

Abstract:The carbon cycle of global inland waters is quantitatively comparable to other components in the global carbon budget. Among inland waters, a significant part is man-made lakes formed by damming rivers. Man-made lakes are undergoing a rapid increase in number and size. Human impacts and frequent algae blooms lead to it necessary to make a better constraint on their carbon cycles. Here, we make a primary estimation on the air–water CO2 transfer flux through an algae bloom year for a subtropical man-made lake—Hongfeng Lake, Southwest China. To do this a new type of glass bottles was designed for content and isotopic analysis of DIC and other environmental parameters. At the early stage of algae bloom, CO2 was transferred from the atmosphere to the lake with a net flux of 1.770 g·C·m−2. Later, the partial pressure (pCO2) of the aqueous CO2 increased rapidly and the lake outgassed to the atmosphere with a net flux of 95.727 g·C·m−2. In the remaining days, the lake again took up CO2 from the atmosphere with a net flux of 14.804 g·C·m−2. As a whole, Lake Hongfeng released 4527 t C to the atmosphere, accounting for one-third of the atmosphere/soil CO2 sequestered by chemical weathering in the whole drainage. With an empirical mode decomposition method, we found air temperature plays a major role in controlling water temperature, aqueous pCO2 and hence CO2 flux. This work indicates a necessity to make detailed and comprehensive carbon budgets in man-made lakes.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) governs the spatial and temporal variations in CO2, yet relationships of the CO2 concentration (cCO(2)) and emission flux (FCO2) with DOM in urban lakes have rarely been reported. In this study, we monitored levels of cCO(2), FCO2, and the composition of DOM over a 24 h period at three sites during the dry and wet seasons in China's largest urban lake, Tangxun Lake. Our study found the ratio of day/night FCO2 (millimoles per square meter per day) decreased from the dry season (0.79; 7.68/9.68) to the wet season (0.25; 6.05/24.16), averaging 0.42 (6.77/15.97), implying that accounting for nighttime CO2 emissions can increase regional estimates by 70%. This study revealed that eutrophication affected diurnal CO2 emissions with greater algal growth enhancing daytime CO2 uptake and subsequently increasing nighttime CO2 emissions via DOM degradation (larger protein-like DOM fraction). We anticipate that the relative magnitude of FCO2 between day and night from lakes is likely to increase due to urbanization and climate change, underscoring the importance of treating urban lakes as a distinct group and integrating DOM dynamics into carbon cycling in future research.

Abstract:Shallow eutrophic lakes contribute disproportional to the emissions of CO2 and CH4 from inland waters. The processes that contribute to these fluxes, their environmental controls, and anthropogenic influences, however, are poorly constrained. Here, we studied the spatial variability and seasonal dynamics of CO2 and CH4 fluxes across the sediment-water interface, and their relationships to porewater nutrient concentrations in Lake Ulansuhai, a shallow eutrophic lake located in a semi-arid region in Northern China. The mean concentrations of CO2 and CH4 in porewater were 877.8 ± 31.0 µmol L-1 and 689.2 ± 45.0 µmol L-1, which were more than 50 and 20 times higher than those in the water column, respectively. The sediment was always a source of both gases for the water column. Porewater CO2 and CH4 concentrations and diffusive fluxes across the sediment-water interface showed significant temporal and spatial variations with mean diffusive fluxes of 887.3 ±124.7 µmol m-2 d-1 and 607.1 ± 68.0 µmol m-2 d-1 for CO2 and CH4, respectively. The temporal and spatial variations of CO2 and CH4 concentrations in porewater were associated with corresponding variations in dissolved organic carbon and dissolved nitrogen species. Temperature and dissolved organic carbon in surface porewater were the most important drivers of temporal variations in diffusive fluxes, whereas dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen were the main drivers of their spatial variations. Diffusive fluxes generally increased with increasing dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in the porewater from the inflow to the outflow region of the lake. The estimated fluxes of both gases at the sediment-water interface were one order of magnitude lower than the emissions at the water surface, which were measured in a companion study. This indicates that diffusive fluxes across the sediment-water interface were not the main pathway for CO2 and CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. To improve the mechanistic understanding and predictability of greenhouse gas emissions from shallow lakes, future studies should aim to close the apparent gap in the CO2 and CH4 budget by combining improved flux measurement techniques with process-based modeling.

Abstract:Lake organic matter is one of the important forms of terrestrial carbon, and its sedimentary evolution is affected by many factors such as climate and sources. However, few studies have been conducted on the feedback mechanism of the sedimentary evolution of organic matter to climate change in cold and arid lakes. Historical variations and compositions of sources of the sediment organic matter (SOM) of Hulun Lake, a typical lake in the cold and arid region of China, were studied by multiple methods. The interactions and fee7dback mechanisms between the sedimentary evolution of SOM and climate change, and compositions of SOM source change, were also discussed. Overall, the characteristic indexes of the SOM, including total organic carbon (TOC), carbon stable isotope (δ13C), carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), and fluorescence intensity (FI) of the protein-like component in water extractable organic matter (WEOM), showed obvious and uniform characteristics of periodical changes. The indexes were relatively stable before 1920, and fluctuated from 1920 to 1979. Since the 1980s, values of TOC, δ13C, and FI of the protein-like component in WEOM has increased, while C/N decreased. The absolute dominant contribution of terrestrial source to the SOM had changed, and the relative average contribution rate of autochthonous source increased from 17.6% before 1920 to 36.9% after 2000. The increase of temperature, strong evaporation concentration effect, and change of compositions of SOM sources are the important driving factors of the sedimentary evolution of organic matter in Hulun Lake.

High thermodynamical sensitivity of CO2 emissions from a large oligotrophic-hardwater lake (Nam Co) on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau (TP) has the world's largest distribution of high-alpine and saline (generally hardwater) lakes, which are expected to affect regional carbon cycling profoundly. However, the variability, and especially underlying factors controlling CO2 dynamics, across widespread hardwater lakes is poorly understood on the TP. Here, we present year-round records of surface water pCO2 from a representative hardwater lake (Nam Co) on the TP, and analyze relationships between ambient variables and pCO2 during open water (i.e., ice-free) and ice-covered months. Surface pCO2 (233.3 μatm on average) was a little oversaturated to atmosphere (219 μatm on average) during the open water season. As a CO2 source, Nam Co emitted 8.73 ± 1.06 Gg C annually, but this flux only accounted for 0.53 ± 0.06 ‰ of its total dissolved inorganic carbon pool (1.64 × 1013 g C). Regression results indicate that, during open water months, both seasonal and diurnal varying patterns of surface pCO2 were influenced predominantly by water temperature, in a quasi-marine mode, by controlling gas solubility and dissolved carbonate equilibria. Therefore, CO2 evasion was elevated during summer months, despite the lake being autotrophic (i.e., CO2 consumption via photosynthesis). By contrast, during ice-covered months the surface pCO2 was strongly related to under-ice thermodynamics, and declined nonlinear with increased inversed stratification. In the hypolimnion, as a result of extremely weak metabolism (as indicated by low dissolved oxygen depletion rates) and a combined high carbonate buffering effect, accumulation of CO2 was negligible, leading to an absence of peak effluxes of CO2 during turnover periods, compared to eutrophic freshwater lakes. We argue that, under future global warming scenarios, consideration of the impact of gradually warming lake water on thermodynamics and dissolved carbonate equilibria are vital in order to understand the future CO2 dynamics of these widespread high-altitude oligotrophic-hardwater lakes situated across the TP.

Abstract:An abnormally high concentration of organic matter (OM) in Lake Hulun, a large shallow eutrophic lake located in the sparsely populated Hulun Buir Steppe, was observed in a field investigation. Little was known about the origin of the OM. To identify the source of the OM in Lake Hulun, the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, natural abundance of stable isotope and three dimensional excitation emission matrix (3DEEM) fluorescence spectroscopy techniques were employed. Furthermore, a cyanobacterial incubation and degradation experiment was conducted in the laboratory to quantify the contribution of algae to dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Lake Hulun. C/N, the stable carbon isotope (δ(13)C) values typical of C3 plant debris in particulate organic matter (POM) and the fluorescence indices of DOM indicate that most of the OM in Lake Hulun is of terrigenous origin. It was deduced that only about 10.2% and 7.3% of DOM were contributed by algae in September and January, respectively, according to the linear correlation between the concentrations of algae-derived DOM and the fluorescence intensities of tyrosine-like matter. According to the stockbreeding development and climate change in Hunlun Buir Steppe, we deduced that the destruction of the grassland ecosystem by overgrazing in specific locations and trends in climatic warming and drying were the main factors causing the increase of OM and nutrient concentrations in Lake Hulun. This result highlights the need to pay more attention to the inputs of terrigenous organic matter to the lakes in northern China.
Decadal changes in surface CO2 concentrations and CO2 fluxes in a mountain lake

Abstract:Climate warming impacts biogeochemical cycles in lakes. However, the factors controlling CO2 dynamics in mountain lakes over multidecadal scales are poorly understood. Here, we capitalized on long‐term monthly data (1995–2022) of oligotrophic mountain Lake Tovel and calculated surface CO2 concentrations and flux by applying geochemical relationships and the thin boundary layer approach. Advanced time‐series and regression modeling was used to determine temporal patterns and environmental parameters explaining surface CO2 concentrations and flux. Surface CO2 concentrations were highest from 2009 to 2017 (annual mean: 109.1 μmol CO2 L−1) but lower before and after this period. Concomitantly, the air–water CO2 flux (μmol CO2 m−2 d−1) showed a period of lowest (mean1995–2010: 6.4 ± 0.7), highest (mean2011–2017: 35.7 ± 2.1), and intermediate emissions (mean2018–2022: 19.3 ± 4.7). Temporal modeling showed that hypolimnetic and deep hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen (DO) had the same change points and trends as surface CO2 concentrations. Abstract:Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted or absorbed by lakes are an important component of the global carbon cycle. However, few studies have focused on the GHG dynamics of eutrophic saline lakes, thus preventing a comprehensive understanding of the carbon cycle. Here, we conducted four sampling analyses using a floating chamber in Daihai Lake, a eutrophication saline lake in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, to explore its carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions. The mean CO2 emission flux (FCO2) and CH4 emission flux (FCH4) were 17.54 ± 14.54 mmol/m2/day and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol/m2/day, respectively. The results indicated that Daihai Lake was a source of CO2 and CH4, and GHG emissions exhibited temporal variability. The mean CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and CH4 partial pressure (pCH4) were 561.35 ± 109.59 µatm and 17.02 ± 13.45 µatm, which were supersaturated relative to the atmosphere. The regression and correlation analysis showed that the main influencing factors of pCO2 were wind speed, dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen (TN) and Chlorophyll a (Chl.a), whereas the main influencing factors of pCH4 were water temperature (WT), Chl.a, nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), TN, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and water depth. Salinity regulated carbon mineralization and organic matter decomposition, and it was an important influencing factor of pCO2 and pCH4. Additionally, the trophic level index (TLI) significantly increased pCH4. Our study elucidated that salinity and eutrophication play an important role in the dynamic changes of GHG emissions. However, research on eutrophic saline lakes needs to be strengthened.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) outgassing from inland eutrophic waters is a small but critical component of the global carbon cycle that is currently not well constrained. Eutrophic lake systems have been reported to be supersaturated with dissolved CO 2 ( p CO 2 ), therefore considered a carbon source to the atmosphere. In this study, we aimed to test two hypotheses: 1) there is a substantial diurnal fluctuation in p CO 2 in eutrophic lakes, making them both a source and a sink of carbon; and 2) the diurnal fluctuation is seasonally dependent, with a pronounced variability during the summer. As a case study, we used a hypereutrophic lake in a highly urbanized area in subtropical southern USA. We conducted in-situ measurements on p CO 2 , photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and other ambient parameters at 3-hour intervals for two days each in the winter and summer of 2022. The study shows that there was a clear diurnal fluctuation of p CO 2 with the peak in the early morning and the lowest in the later afternoon in both seasons. In the winter, the lake water was mainly CO 2 -unsaturated in reference to the atmospheric CO 2 of 420 ppm, ranging from a low of 128 ppm in the mid-afternoon to a high of 557 ppm in the early morning hours. In the summer, the lake water was mostly CO 2 -oversaturated, with p CO 2 increasing drastically from 309 ppm during the early afternoon to 3895 ppm in the early morning hours. In both winter and summer, CO 2 outgassing was nearly three times greater at night than in the daytime, increasing from −9.98 to –3.75 mg C m -2 h −1 in the winter and from 13.17 to 45.34 mg C m -2 h −1 in the summer. Consequently, a clear diurnal trend of CO 2 evasion rate (FCO 2 ) was found, showing that the lake often acted as a carbon sink during the daylight hours but as a carbon source at night, strongly affected by PAR availability and colored dissolved organic matter (cDOM). These findings validate our initial hypotheses and suggest that the diurnal and seasonal fluctuations of CO 2 evasion in eutrophic lakes should be considered in the global carbon accounting of lake systems to constrain uncertainties. Furthermore, we found that p CO 2 measurements at 10:00o'clock in the morning have the least deviation to the diurnal average and, therefore, propose standardizing this time for future studies in field p CO 2 measurements in order to make data comparable over seasons, geographical regions, and lake trophic levels.

Abstract:Lake carbon (C) cycling is a key component of the global C cycle and associated C source and sink processes. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange flux at the lake-air interface (Fc) are controlled by complex physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms. It would be instructively significant to determine whether hydrological processes drive conversion shifts between C sources and sinks in floodplain-lake systems. Findings from this study show that exogenous input and in situ metabolism related to photosynthesis, respiration, and organic matter degradation were the main driving mechanisms of CO2 absorption and release in a large floodplain-lake system (i.e., Lake Poyang). Moreover, the intense and frequent water-level fluctuations inherent to floodplain-lakes may also have a direct or indirect impact on C cycling processes and CO2 exchange rates in floodplain-lake systems via their effect on physical processes, inorganic C transport, in-situ metabolic processes. We confirmed the potential of C source and sink conversion in floodplain-lakes under hydrological fluctuations, and strengthen the understanding of driving mechanisms of C source and sink conversion in floodplain systems.

Abstract:Although saline aquatic ecosystems are significant emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs), dynamic changes in GHGs at the sediment-water interface remain unclear. The present investigation carried out a total of four sampling campaigns in Daihai Lake, which is a eutrophic saline lake situated in a semi-arid area of northern China. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes at the sediment-water interface and the influencing factors. The mean concentrations of porewater CO2 and CH4 were 44.98 ± 117.99 μmol L-1 and 124.36 ± 97.00 μmol L-1, far exceeding those in water column of 11.14 ± 2.16 μmol L-1 and 0.33 ± 0.23 μmol L-1, respectively. The CO2 and CH4 fluxes at the sediment-water interface (FS-WCO2 and FS-WCH4) exhibited significant spatial and temporal variations, with mean values of 9.24 ± 13.84 μmol m-2 d-1 and 3.53 ± 4.36 μmol m-2 d-1, respectively, indicating that sediment is the source of CO2 and CH4 in the water column. However, CO2 and CH4 fluxes were much lower than those measured at the water-air interface in a companion study (17.54 ± 14.54 mmol m-2d-1 and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol m-2d-1, respectively), indicating that the diffusive flux of gases at the sediment-water interface was not the primary source of CO2 and CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. Regression and correlation analyses revealed that salinity (Sal) and nutrients were the most influential factors on porewater gas concentrations, and that gas fluxes increased with increasing gas concentrations and porosity. The microbial activity of sediment is greatly affected by nutrients and Sal. Additionally, Sal has the ability to regulate biogeochemical processes, thereby regulating GHG emissions. The present investigation addresses the research gap concerning GHG emissions from sediments of eutrophic saline lakes. The study suggests that controlling the eutrophication and salinization of lakes could be a viable strategy for reducing carbon emissions from lakes. However, further investigations are required to establish more conclusive results.

Abstract:Vitellogenin genes are expressed specifically in the liver of female oviparous vertebrates under the strict control of estrogen. To explain this tissue-specific expression, we performed a detailed analysis of the Xenopus laevis vitellogenin gene B1 promoter by DNase I footprinting and gel mobility-shift assays. We characterized five binding sites for the ubiquitous factor CTF/NF-I. Two of these sites are close to the TATA-box, whereas the others are located on both sides of the estrogen responsive unit formed by two imperfect estrogen response elements. Moreover two liver-enriched factors, C/EBP and HNF3, were found to interact with multiple closely spaced proximal promoter elements in the first 100 base pairs upstream of the TATA-box. To confirm the physiological significance of this in vitro analysis, in vivo DNase I footprinting experiments were carried out using the ligation-mediated polymerase chain reaction technique. The various cis-elements characterized in vitro as binding sites for known transcription factors and more particularly for liver-enriched transcription factors are efficiently recognized in vivo as well, suggesting that they play an important role in the control of the liver-specific vitellogenin gene B1 expression.
Interannual characteristics and driving mechanism of CO2 fluxes during the growing season in an alpine wetland ecosystem at the southern foot of the Qilian Mountains

Abstract:The carbon process of the alpine ecosystem is complex and sensitive in the face of continuous global warming. However, the long-term dynamics of carbon budget and its driving mechanism of alpine ecosystem remain unclear. Using the eddy covariance (EC) technique-a fast and direct method of measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes, we analyzed the dynamics of CO2 fluxes and their driving mechanism in an alpine wetland in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) during the growing season (May-September) from 2004-2016. The results show that the monthly gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Re) showed a unimodal pattern, and the monthly net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) showed a V-shaped trend. With the alpine wetland ecosystem being a carbon sink during the growing season, that is, a reservoir that absorbs more atmospheric carbon than it releases, the annual NEE, GPP, and Re reached -67.5 ± 10.2, 473.4 ± 19.1, and 405.9 ± 8.9 gCm-2, respectively. At the monthly scale, the classification and regression tree (CART) analysis revealed air temperature (Ta) to be the main determinant of variations in the monthly NEE and GPP. Soil temperature (Ts) largely determined the changes in the monthly Re. The linear regression analysis confirmed that thermal conditions (Ta, Ts) were crucial determinants of the dynamics of monthly CO2 fluxes during the growing season. At the interannual scale, the variations of CO2 fluxes were affected mainly by precipitation and thermal conditions. The annual GPP and Re were positively correlated with Ta and Ts, and were negatively correlated with precipitation. However, hydrothermal conditions (Ta, Ts, and precipitation) had no significant effect on annual NEE. Our results indicated that climate warming would be beneficial to the improvement of GPP and Re in the alpine wetland, while the increase of precipitation can weaken this effect.

Abstract:Dramatic changes in lake water conditions may induce sensitive feedback in sediments, such as the release of phosphate and ammonia. There is a lack of the understanding of sediment nutrient release fluxes and their responses to various environmental factors in plateau lakes. In this study, nutrient contents in the water and sediment, sediment nutrient release rates, and their responses to various influential factors in a steppe shallow plateau lake, Lake Hulun, China, were investigated. Sediment is a large store of nutrients, with bioavailable phosphorus of 555 mg kg−1 in surface lake sediments. If water became anoxic, sediments will release appreciable amounts of phosphate (2.1 mg P m−2 d−1) and ammonia (40.0 mg N m−2 d−1), three times greater than those in oxic conditions. Raised temperatures greatly increased sediment phosphate release rates, while the highest temperature (23 °C) slightly decreased ammonia release rates due to strong nitrification. Assuming a whole year of internal loading, ammonia and dissolved reactive phosphorus concentrations in water column would increase by an estimated 0.22 mg N L−1 and 0.01 mg P L−1, respectively, which is equal to 2 and 0.5 times of their ambient concentrations. A pH increase from 8.4 to 9.4 significantly decreased internal nitrogen and phosphorus release rates by around three times. Overall, dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH had a greater impact on sediment nutrient release from lake sediments compared to temperature, and further increased the eutrophic status in the overlying water when these three parameters varied within the normal seasonal range (temperature: 1.9–23.1 °C, DO: oxic and anoxic; pH: 7.5–9.4). With the periodic low DO and frequency of drought in the future, lake management strategies that mitigate water eutrophication, such as water diversion, may need to be considered.

Abstract:The lake eutrophication is highly variable in both time and location, and greatly restricts the sustainable development of water resources. The lack of national eutrophication evaluation for multi-scale lakes limits the pertinent governance and sustainable management of water quality. In this study, a remote sensing approach was developed to capture 40-year dynamics of trophic state index (TSI) for nationwide lakes in China. 32% of lakes (N = 1925) in China were eutrophic and 26% were oligotrophic, and a longitudinal pattern was discovered, with the 40-year average TSI of 62.26 in the eastern plain compared to 23.72 in the Tibetan Plateau. A decreasing trend was further observed in the past four decades with a correlation of −0.16, which was mainly discovered in the Tibetan Plateau lakes (r > −0.90, p < 0.01). The contribution of climate change and human activities was quantified and varied between lake zones, with anthropogenic factors playing a dominant role in the east plain lakes (88%, N = 473) and large lakes are subject to a more complex driving mechanism (≥ 3 driving factors). The study expands the spatiotemporal scale for eutrophication monitoring and provides an important base for strengthening lake management and ecological services.

Abstract:Lakes are one of the most important freshwater resources on Earth and they provide a wide range of ecosystem services. However, due to rapid economic development and the intensification of human activities, many lakes have become eutrophic, which may threaten their status as water resources. Human activities have played a significant role in lake eutrophication, but whether this role is independent of, or coupled with, natural climate change requires further study. We selected Dali Lake, a large lake affected by human activity within the ancient warfare borders, to clarify the ecological response of a lake to climate change and human activity. We used analyses of sedimentary n-alkanes and AMS C-14 dating to reconstruct the paleolimnological evolution of Dali Lake since 15 cal kyr BP, and specifically to assess the timing and causes of eutrophication. The results show that the short-chain n-alkanes (C17-19-alkanes) in Dali Lake are mainly produced by bacteria and algae within the lake, and that the sedimentary absolute abundance of short-chain n-alkanes (A(17-19)-alkanes) can be used as a proxy for assessing the ecological status of the lake. The ecological status of Dali Lake was the most stable during the early to middle Holocene, when the East Asian summer monsoon was strong, but bacterial and algal outbreaks occurred during three episodes of a weakened summer monsoon-the Older Dryas, Younger Dryas, and the Common Era-when the lake experienced different degrees of eutrophication. During the recession of the East Asian summer monsoon, the weakening of precipitation recharge of the lake led to a reduction in lake area and an increase in nutrient concentrations in the lake water, while aeolian dust input was an additional nutrient source, leading to bacterial and algal outbreaks. During the Common Era, lake eutrophication occurred in the context of both summer monsoon recession and enhanced human activities, but their combined effects did not lead to more intense lake eutrophication than was caused by monsoon recession during the Younger Dryas. We conclude that, although human activities have enhanced the eutrophication of Dali Lake, the reduction in lake size due to monsoon recession and the resulting increase in the salinity and nutrient concentration of the lake water, combined with increased aeolian inputs, were a more important trigger of lake eutrophication.
